If asked what the most intense healing stone is, easily Phenakite comes to the top of the list. Of all the stones that our clients speak about, this one is continually mentioned. Though it comes from many different locations like Russia, Brazil, Colorado, Nigeria and more, it is still a relatively difficult stone to come across. Even more rare is getting a large enough piece to make a sphere out of! Most crystals or polished free forms tend to be relatively small. The black mineral that you see in this sphere from Russia is Biotite Mica. Aha! Gotcha! This Biotite sample (the tan thingy in the middle) has a Radiohalo (Pelochroic Halo for you Minerologists) which looks like a hole/ring. What is a Radiohalo? Basically, the Biotite trapped a radioactive mineral within it and the radiation damaged the Biotite Crystal Structure. TLDR: Ooh! Aah! Radiation Bad! Holes! Thin Section of Biotite in Cross Polarized Light (XPL) Decided to try my shakey hands at recording the changes in light from rotating Biotite Mica. I'll rig up some sort of improvements along the way to reduce shaking. What I like about Biotite is that it looks unassuming until you give it a whirl. Then you see the colorful lines pop out. There's probably a life lesson in here somewhere. Eh.
