Thankfully, it wouldn't be painful at all as we all go through it ourselves!

As we age, the collagen and things in the cartilage of our ears and nose breaks down naturally over time and (with looser skin/wrinkles due to the same fate) gives the appearance that our ears and noses get bigger with old age. I love thinking of modified biology with my headcanons and had it so that Viera ears did actually keep growing as it broke down, eventually leading to larger, softer floppy ears for the oldest!

I would also believe floppy ears are a natural genetic trait too, much like curly hair or barefoot/padfoot, so while most elderly viera WILL have floppy ears, not all floppy ears are elderly! This of course leads to fun scenarios when trying to guess a Viera's age since even when older they maintain their youthful appearance, so it always pays to be cautious when trying to find out if they're 20 or 200!
