In a sci-fi story I am writing, a character suffers heatstroke. He survives but sustains some brain damage, for the second time in his life. He is shown to have some memory issues, and a loss of coordination. In the setting, there is technology available to help heal this, but due to plot reasons, he cannot access them. When he eventually does, it heals some of his nerve damage and helps with his chronic pain, but it doesn't get rid of the damage entirely, and he still greatly benefits from mobility aids and memory accomodations. I know that the "character heals their disability" plot is ableist, so I am trying to avoid that. Do you think I need to revise this character?
Hi! I don't see a problem with this - characters healing their disability as a trope is more of a problem when it comes to completely healing. When it comes to symptoms lessening or being adjusted, it's easier to think of it like someone getting an aid or a surgery - it's a way that the damage can be helped and mitigated but not erasing that it was ever there and making the character "abled" again.
Overall I really do like how this character sounds and am excited to see how it works! I also like the acknowledgment in the story that aids and surgeries as well as medications can be inaccessible for most people. Best of luck and sorry for the late reply! - Mod Bert

I actually really like this concept. It makes so much sense and now I have this desire to read a fic or two about it. Also @biologicalfandomhippo and @its-tony-time have the right idea...
After Arthur dies, he has to face all the people Merlin has killed in the afterlife.
Only when he's defeated them all, will he return.
#bbc merlin#merlin#merthur#merlin bbc#arthur#concept#merlin emrys#arthur pendragon#the once and future king#more like the king of procrastination#merlin got rid of these peeps in 5 seconds and its taken him CENTURIES and he's still only a fifth of the way done#gotta step up the game if we want to see him again before armageddon#merlin is a tad impatient with him#and when he finally gets back merlin will ask why it took him so long to make it back#and arther will have this long-winded explanation of all these powerful beasts and sorcerers#and merlin will be like: 🤔 “hmm that guy sounds familiar...#didn't I throw him out with the morning rubbish when I went to go saddle your horse??#and arthur is just going to get that jaw on the floor stupified look and merlin is not going to know what happened#arthur: i-it took me 600 years to beat him...#merlin: surprised pikachu face

Any advice for cosplaying while trans (afab)? I am making my first pattern for a cosplay project and I don't know which form I should fit it to? I prefer to bind but I can't do that all the time for health reasons, and I don't want it to look weird when I take the binder off. Am I over thinking this?
I’m not trans so you may also want to reach out to trans cosplayers for more specific advice. Generally, you plan how you want to present in the cosplay and construct the garment to that. This really goes for anyone! If you plan to bind, pad, wear a muscle suit, wear a silicone chest or fake breasts, wear a cooling suit (for mascots) you’ll want to use your measurements while wearing those undergarments. But if you plan to remove the binder and still wear the garment, I would construct it for a looser / masculine fit but size it up to comfortably fit your largest measurement (chest size while unbound). I suggest making a mockup so you can test the fit while bound and unbound to get a look and feel that you are comfortable with. Depending on your chest size while unbound it might look a little baggy while you are bound. You can use hidden safety pins, or other fasteners, to help with adjusting that fit. I have a very old crossplay where I cosplayed Nova from Bleach. I used binding the first time I wore it (Pic 1, Pic 2) and later ditched the binding (Pic 3). The baggier top allowed me to do this, but the shape of my boobs were visible when I wasn’t bound, even with a baggy top, mainly because of their size. Doing a mockup can help you work out the construction to better hide the shape of your unbound chest or test out alternative non-binder options for your comfort (such as using a sports bra or wearing a tightish t-shirt underneath to slightly compress.) I hope this helps! — Duckie | Admin | Support the Blog (Ko-Fi) (I answered a similar ask poorly in the past and have worked to correct my use of language to be more inclusive. A character in a sci-fi story I am working on is an android, a human brain controlling a large many-armed crane. Because her limbs are built too weak to lift her whole body, she moves via a track mounted on the ceiling. She is able to move more freely in lower gravity, but can't use that very often. Her mobility limitations are treated as important, but she still has many interests outside of her disability and leads a fulfilling life. I know that fully fictional disabilities are sometimes viewed as being worse representation, and I understand why, so I wanted to check if this character concept needs more work?
Hi there, thanks for your question!
I think this is a neat concept for a character, and I personally am a fan of seeing more non-human characters in speculative fiction who are physically disabled. I think there's a lot of storytelling potential in considering the ways non-human characters would experience disability differently from human characters and how that might look.
It's true that inventing fictional disabilities can potentially be bad representation, but that tends to hold more weight in a real-world setting and with human characters who could just as easily have been written with a real-life disability. As you've already established, your premise is science fiction and far enough away from the real world that I don't see a problem with it. And as an android, this character probably wouldn't experience the same kinds of disabilities that a flesh-and-blood human would, so I don't have a problem with writers getting a little more creative on that front.
Other physically disabled people are welcome to offer their thoughts!

@biologicalfandomhippo yeah, actually! minnie is involved as well, though I think the circumstances surrounding her enrollment are different than the guys (re: involuntary discharge)
they went to school first and then about halfway through his phd (???) goondis left for the allure, and mike did the same soon after with minnie in tow because oh my god, leaving just became a real option (also the reason they got married, then they're impossible to separate---being in love was just a bonus) (they did airplane mechanics/electronic maintenance, goondis did something. else?)
it's the eventual reason they stop talking at all, really. that, combined with something like Mike intentionally sabotaging a plane because he disagrees with the trip (and a general issue with authority when He is not It) led to him being involuntarily discharged (they were being very niceys, really). minnie left voluntarily soon after that. goondis eventually was medically discharged and they just kind of went... home?
it's a little less dramatic than you might want but they're not as outwardly destructive in this particular au. barring pam and the fire she started at work ofc
my normal guy hotdaga au (previously talked about) where mike/goondis/pam/minnie were best friends in high school and trade school + university, and then slowly drift apart over the years. is slowly killing me
#they're involuntarily discharged and not dishonourably discharged because im going off canadian law and standards#dishonourable discharge within canada serves a different meaning and bars you from things like voting as well as jail time (typically) since#it only really occurs once a serious crime has been committed#also. as much as i hate the canadian military they're at least more chill about it good god

I was thinking about the hot daga, as one does on a Tuesday morning, and I must defer to your expert opinion on something: was raccoon Brandon sentient prior to being possessed?? Doctor goondis as sentient in his chicken form. Are all animals sentient in this universe? Did Brandon just steal someone's body? Why was that someone willing to commit a cannibalism on Pam?
sentience in the hotdaga universe likely depends on if you would normally be eaten for nutrients or not, which is why both the bird chicken and processed chicken (like the nuggets) can coexist. this doesn't extend to common pica "foods" like dirt or ice or paper, etc.
it would also make sense that this wouldn't extend to animals that aren't commonly eaten (either from a lack of domestication or risk of disease) like seagulls or raccoons.
for alien fruits like plupples, it could depend on nutrient content or it couldn't. same thing goes for poisonous berries like the ones on mistletoe (birds eat it just fine, but we can't).
in short: i don't think that the raccoon brandon possessed had the capability of thinking like a person would before brandon took over. whether or not this counts as stealing a body is up to you (i think it is, but some people might think otherwise)
this also raises the question of fertalized eggs and how goondis came to be, and whether or not chickens can lay unfertilized eggs in universe or not.
#i'd love some more input from others as well and what they might think#i love speculating on biology so this was a Very fun question#biologicalfandomhippo#asked and answered#the hotdaga
