Hey! I've been going through your evidence tag for a couple of days now haha. I just wanted to ask which episode did Boots came out and the scene where she appeared with a binoculars? Thank you!

Happy Friday and Yule, anon! Boots first appeared in a coda (after-credit scene) in 7x08. Our first glimpse of her was with the binoculars, before the scene cut to her back as she walked toward Alexandria. She later appeared at the beginning of 7x09 when Gabriel drove away. I call this figure Binoculars Bethfoot. Officially this figure is Tamiel from the Junkyard, but I analyzed costume differences between the two characters and they don’t align. There also arguably physical differences, including a faint scar above this figure’s left eyebrow like Beth. It was always strange how the show didn’t make a direct connection to Boots and Tamiel. I’ve already discussed why Boots is Beth numerous times in the tag below.

So episode 8x06 aired tonight. I missed this episode as I returned to campus this evening after a ten-hour trip. (Thankfully I wasn’t the one who was actually driving.) @bethgreenewarriorprincess alerted me to talk in GE about Jadis wearing boots. I zipped to the end of the episode. Jadis marks a yellow storage container with an “A,” and one of the last shots is then of her from Rick’s perspective, walking away. She's wearing cowboy boots (specifically his, which she stole, as confirmed on TTD). Rick is in his “birdcage” at the moment, stripped naked much like Daryl was last season. The scene mirrors 4x16 and 7x03 while also alluding to Beth as yellow is her color. None of this is a coincidence. As I have hammered, Tamiel can’t be Boots because of simple differences in costume and physical characteristics (X). Shoes have been a motif dating back to season 4. This is all building up to something. We’re going to get a close-up shot of Boots’s footwear again, and this time the camera will pan up and reveal a scarred face.

And here’s a crack theory: Rick’s trapped as he was back in Atlanta. Maybe in a midseason finale a friend shows up to rescue him?

I went back through some of my old notes and came across a conversation I had with @allatariel. The morning after 7x09 aired, when we were still thinking about Jadis stealing Rick’s boots and the overall boot motif (X), I suggested a possibility for Boots absence. We haven't seen Beth since 7x09 because she's been locked up at the junkyard, like Rick was. Jadis stole his shoes. Tamiel probably stole Beth's. Which is why they look so similar. It was a bait and switch.

Season 7 took place over 19 days (X). Not much time has passed during 8a. I bet Beth didn't appear in 7b after 709 because she was imprisoned. That's why she wasn't at the Alexandria battle in 7x16. She may have wanted to help Rick and had to be imprisoned to be prevented from telling him about Jadis's deal with Negan. Tamiel likely noticed Beth’s reaction to seeing Rick and informed Jadis after they returned to the Junkyard. It does not make sense that only one Scavenger followed Rick and Aaron to Alexandria as the Scavengers are like insects in that they come in swarms. Pollyanna Macintosh even said that her group is “a hive-like society” (X). When Gabriel described his kidnapping to Rick, he was vague about the abductor(s) which does not make much sense. In 7x10 Jadis referred to Tamiel in front of everyone. I reviewed Gabriel’s dialogue again, and noticed something:

“I heard something when I was on watch, from inside the wall. I went into the pantry, one of them jumped me. She was angry because she didn't get the supplies from the boat after all the waiting. So they made me pack up everything else. But she said they were at the boat, so I hoped...”

This supports my theory that Beth and Tamiel followed Rick and Aaron (X), mirroring and furthering the twin imagery often present in the show. Remember, we did not see Tamiel wearing the boots until 7x16.

allatariel also noted the parallels between Rick’s imprisonment and the Terminus arc: So, Rick's in a freight container trailer with an “A” on it, just like Terminus and the people who took them took his stuff and is wearing it, just like Terminus. The Terminus arc is when all of Team Family was reunited except for Beth, and there have been other season 4 callbacks with the machete and with the Claimers. The Claimers found Daryl right after Beth’s kidnapping. The Termites did foreshadow the Saviors, but it’s still interesting that that particular time in the show keeps coming back.

I can see it too. There’s a reason why shading was digitally added to Boots’s forehead, even though she was supposedly Sabrina - an actress we’d never seen on the show before then. Boots would be more likely to be recognized as Emily if we could see her actual eyebrows.

Do you still think Beth is Boots?

Yes I do. You can read my masterpost on reasons why Beth is Boots here: X.  You can check out my tag on the theory here: X. From a basic costume standpoint, Boots can’t be Tamiel. Boots also has Beth’s eyebrow scar. Everything else is just extra evidence.

So I've been back and forth with believing whether Boots is Beth or not, but here's the thing that gets me. If it was Tamiel, why not show her face? We'd still have no idea who she was since we had yet to meet the GPK in the season. It'd still be a mystery as to who's watching if that's what they were after. But to go to such lengths to hide who it was, not only then but with the binoculars too, AND be shady on the reveal (TTD), makes me think we would've recognized the person (i.e. Beth)!

Furthermore, in regards to the lengths that TPTB went to, there was digital shading added to Boots’s face. The shadows on her face, specifically after she lowers the binoculars, are clearly not natural. It’s very obvious in gifs of Boots, such as this one which: X. Boots has the same forehead bumps as Emily, while Sabrina (the actress who played Tamiel) doesn’t, and the same pale delicate hands as Emily. Boots also has a faint scar over her left eyebrow where Beth’s second scar would be.

 Boots also has a different costume from Tamiel, going by the sleeves. I think the boots are the same, or at least very similar, between Boots and Tamiel because TPTB knew that’s what people would focus on, instead of the less obvious physical and costume details. If Tamiel was Boots, that should have been revealed in the show as TPTB made it a big deal, leaving it as a midseason cliff hanger. Not everyone will or can watch TTD.

Boots is Beth Masterpost

Boots, or Binoculars Bethfoot as I like to call her, is one of my favorite things about Team Delusional. I love this mysterious figure. Since she first appeared onscreen, I and many other TDers have argued that she is Beth in disguise, hiding amongst the Scavengers. I archive all posts related to Boots under this tag (X), but for convenience here is a masterpost of evidence for why Boots is Beth. For reference, Sabrina Gennarino plays Tamiel, one of Jadis’s two hands. Talking Dead confirmed that Tamiel was Boots, after 7x10 aired, in the show’s Live Quiz section. This all part of the subterfuge, as you will see:

Boots filmed the gate scene on July 29th, 2016 (X). T$DF documented this shoot in their forum threads, but they never announced the information on their Facebook or Tumblr. Their general silence was odd, as the site had pictures and usually posts all of their pictures on Facebook. When @bethgreenewarriorprincess​  and I first heard this information, we were very excited as we had been speculating Beth would be connected to Alexandria’s gates. Beth is a coda of Sophia’s arc - the lost girl is found, hope lives on - and their characters are heavily connected to gates. Sophia came through the barn doors, shattering the group and their hope for the future. Beth would have been carried out of Grady’s gates after Coda. And Emily came through Alexandria’s gates for a surprise appearance

Emily posted a latergram on July 29th. She was very sneaky about it, even more so than usual (X). We believe that she filmed the tree scene in a private location, probably in a studio or on the studio grounds, while Sabrina Gennarion filmed as a stand-in for her. Sabrina filmed the shot that T$DF reported due to the risk of being seen is higher at the Gin property.

Christy and I have been theorizing that Beth would appear disguised/unrecognizable in a coda (after credit scene) for years. We thought the return would parallel Morgan’s return in season 5. We even considered that the imagery would be related to Beth’s shoes, as there was shoe-related imagery, such as Carl’s lost shoe in 4x10 and the boy’s lone shoe at the tracks in 4x11.

In 7x16 it was revealed that Jadis was Negan’s little bird. She told Rick that, “Tamiel came for the boat things. Followed ones who took. Made a better deal.” So Tamiel followed Rick to Alexandria, but then she continued on to the Sanctuary, meaning logistically she can’t be Boots. She couldn’t be in two places at once, as Boots got to Alexandria the same day that the Saviors took the boat things. When she kidnapped Gabriel, Boots had to steal a car. If Tamiel had transportation, she could have returned to Alexandria from the Sanctuary in that timeframe, theoretically, but then she wouldn’t need to steal a car. It makes sense if Jadis sent two scouts after Rick and Aaron, and if Beth were one of the scouts, she’d volunteer to watch Alexandria. After Grady, she would be cautious, and she’d have only seen Rick, not Maggie, not Daryl. She would want to scope out the community before making a move. 

Tamiel and Boots have different costume features (X) (X). Their shoes are similar, though Tamiel’s right boot doesn’t appear to have the indentation as Boots’. Boots’s sleeves are leather and have a shiny button on the wrist, while Tamiel’s sleeves are made from two different materials including a puffy winter coat. Beth wore fingerless in 4x16, during the flashback that included the line, “There’s a new sheriff in town,” and Maggie also wore fingerless gloves in 7x08, calling attention to that costume feature (X).

We know that Sabrina filmed at the gates because in that shot Boots had the same shoulder build, wide and masculine. She also has masculine hands with large knuckles, while Boots has fair, delicate hands like Emily. Boots has the same forehead creases as Emily as well a faded scar above her eyebrow, where Beth’s second facial laceration was.

When discussing Boots’s identity on Talking Dead, Seth Gilliam was extremely nervous and stumbling over his words (X). He “confirmed” that Tamiel was Boots after Pollyanna (Jadis) talked about subterfuge in filming.

The Junkyard is a thematic mirror of Grady. While Grady was extremely neat and used its wards as slaves under a system of debt, the Scavengers live under a code of “We take, we don’t bother,” amongst an actual garbage heap. Both communities are parasites in complimentary forms. With all of that in mind, Jadis is a perfect set-up to be Beth’s adversary as Dawn was. Dawn was the Wicked Stepmother from Snow White while Jadis is the Wicked Witch, to Beth’s warrior princess/queen arc (X). Lastly, the Junkyard is the community original to the show since Grady. The set is huge and thus would be costly. Why build an elaborate set for a small adversarial group, unless it meant something BIG for a character? And no character has ever been given their own community for development, besides Beth.

TPTB added shading to the face when Boots lowered the binoculars, who was supposedly a new character that the audience would not recognize. Going by physical features, Boots was not theorized characters like Cyndi, Dwight, and Ezekiel. If Boots were simply a new character, the special effects was excessive.

TTD is not available in every country, and Tamiel being Boots also wasn’t announced in every TTD showing (i.e. show the Live Quiz) (X). Why withhold such important information from the audience? It’s also strange that TPTB would Boots up so much and then never officially reveal her identity on the show, like doing a close-up on Tamiel’s boots and then panning to her face.

Right around 7b aired TWD twitter responded to a tweet about Boots’s identity, saying it was Beth. This is an old TV trope called the sarcastic confession. They were truthful, but they couched it in humor to sound insincere.

Tamiel is an actual Biblical name referring to a fallen angel who taught humans about astronomy, which includes the Sun and stars (X) (X). Through symbolism, TPTB have repeatedly connoted Beth as the “Sun” in TWD as she is the light and hope for their world (X). Carl also taught Judith about astronomy so she could find her way if she were ever lost, and Beth would follow the North star to reach Virginia (X).

It’s clear that Sabrina never filmed as Tamiel on July 29th. And yet, Sabrina posted an old selfie from insider her trailer. She captioned it, “My first day as #Tamiel July 2016”. This doesn’t make sense, as she wasn’t wearing Tamiel’s costume at the gates (which is hanging behind her in the picture) and the Junkyard set wasn’t built until mid-August. Sabrina was likely on set in July so she and Emily could film the scenes that explained how Tamiel and Beth reached Alexandria after seeing Rick by the boat (X).

Sabrina promoted “Boots”/“Tamiel is Boots” once right after 7x10 aired (X). She has never again acknowledged Boots’s identity, which makes sense if she filmed with Emily. She would know that she should focus on promoting her character, instead of someone else’s character she was a stand-in for.

Don’t fight me on this. The scar is proof enough, everything else is just extra blessings from Bethus and Scott Gimple. The signs are really all there, and we’ve been reading them right right from the beginning.

During the summer, Emily took a picture with a fan who cosplayed as Dale, and for it she wore a hat and held up a pair of binoculars. @bethgreenewarriorprincess suggested to me that the picture should be compared to Boots and to Sabrina’s hands. So I finally dug up some comparison pictures. (Here are other pictures of Sabrina for comparison: X, X.) (Getty Images from 2010 Sundance Film Festival.) There’s no contest. Whoever played Boots was not Sabrina, and TPTB would not need a stand-in for a secondary character no one would recognize otherwise. If there was no possibility that Boots was Beth, then why is there so much evidence pointing in her favor? Beth is “dead” and Emily hasn’t been in Georgia in years. There shouldn’t be any possibility of this happening. Because there isn’t just one coincidence or one type of physical resemblance. And we’re not even sure of how many physical resemblances there are because TPTB hid Boots so much.

I think the next time we see Boots we'll also see Beth. We saw Boots in 7x08 and then again in 7x09. The third episode is when we get her back (third times the charm). Such a structure would align with Beth's 30 days sign in 4x01. It read as “3-0”, and when she took down the 3 because of Zach, the sign was reset and so was the story. Beth's return would reset the story, and Boots would be subsumed into her character.

Found some more pictures of Emily holding a microphone, and I compared them to Sabrina’s hand (far right in the middle edit). (The bottom picture is from an old edit I made, for further comparison: X.) Emily has more delicate, feminine hands, as well as smaller knuckles, which align well with Boots’s hands. Again, Sabrina has a more masculine build. She played Boots in the walkaway shot, going by her shoulders, but she was only being a stand-in for Emily, who was in the tree. Sabrina would have also done the tree shot if she were simply playing Tamiel. (And we know Boots isn’t Tamiel due to costume differences, Boots having a scar, and Tamiel following the Saviors from Alexandria instead of staying.)

For a planned meta, I made a timeline of Emily’s movements from July 22nd to August 4th of last year. This was when most of the midseason finale was filmed and when the Boots scenes would have been filmed. The green dates are weekends, when TWD doesn’t film, and the red dates are when Emily completely went off the radar and could have filmed. Of the 9 days when Emily couldn’t be placed definitively in L.A. or Toronto, she could have filmed for five of them, and those days overlapped with the Boots scenes.

Maybe this is the meta you're working on but the actress that plays Tamiel who uploaded that throwback photo from her trailer writes in her post that that was July 2016. The junkyard people is in the back half of season 7 that was filmed in 2016. The back half is not filmed in July. Lol and some fans still refuse to believe they can film out of order.

No, that wasn’t related to the meta I was working on, anon. But oh my god you’re a genius! Technically, Sabrina filmed in July 2016, but she would have only filmed as Boots, because she filmed at the gates for Emily. She shouldn’t have filmed as Tamiel, and it was Tamiel’s clothes in her trailer. (More on that later.) For those who don’t remember, on July 29th of last year T$DF reported an unknown figure being seen walking to the gates of Alexandria (X).

When I first heard the news, I thought it was Emily as Beth walking through the gates of Alexandria has been seeded since the season six premiere. T$DF also barely reported the news, posting about it only in their journal thread. Once the scene aired however, it was obvious that TPTB used a stand-in to film the shot, while Emily filmed the shot in the tree somewhere, as the figure walking away was at the Gin property. It’s one of the most visible and accessible filming sites, and TPTB would not risk Emily being seen. That night, Emily posted a latergram, and she went out of her way to make it seem like she couldn’t possibly be in Georgia (X). She posted a picture of a band, captioning it as live music from the Cameron House, but she never tagged the actual band. allatariel and I had to track down the club’s set list from the night and compare it to Emily’s picture. Guess what? None of the bands performing were in Emily’s picture. Super sneaky.

If Sabrina filmed as Tamiel in July, she would have filmed the scene(s) explaining how Tamiel and Beth reached Alexandria. When it was revealed that the Scavengers were spies for Negan, Jadis told Rick, “Tamiel came for the boat things. Followed ones who took. Made a better deal” (X). Tamiel followed the Saviors to the Sanctuary, which is several hours by car, so she likely snuck into one of the Saviors’ truck as Jesus and Carl did. She would have had no time to sneak back to Alexandria the same day, getting there at nightfall. (And she would have had gone on foot at some point, otherwise she wouldn’t have needed to steal the car when she kidnapped Gabriel.) There had to be a second person when Tamiel reached Alexandria. Beth would have been with her, as Boots, and she would have stayed behind. I could see her suggesting that she stay and do reconnaissance on Alexandria, so she could secretly gain intel on Rick’s situation. There are also several small but important differences between Tamiel and Boots’s physicality and costumes:

I reviewed the filming schedule from last summer (X), and there was no way that Sabrina would have been needed on set as Tamiel in July. The Junkyard scenes were filmed in the second half of the season, before the season finale at Alexandria, and the actual set wasn’t even ready until mid-August. Emily had a few days to film in late July/early August, during filming for 7x08 and for the two Boots scenes. But she also had enough time to film some extra scenes. Earlier today, I charted out a timeline of Emily’s social media activity/movement from that period, and I marked down what days she disappeared (X). (Green for weekends, when TWD doesn’t film, and red for days she could have filmed.) Then I made a chart outlining the filming schedule from the same period.

The purple denotes what days TPTB filmed in the studio or in remote, woodsy locations. Both kinds of sites are easy to hide in Emily in. Her schedule actually aligns very well to TWD’s, as she was in L.A. or Toronto during most of the Gin property shoots, when she wouldn’t be needed and shouldn’t be needed (as she would be more likely seen). Of those four days of studio/woods filming, Emily disappeared during three of them. I also checked Sabrina’s Twitter from the time, and she only tweeted on the 24th (X). The rest of the time her social media was silent. Even if the first Boots scene was filmed on August 2nd, when Emily was in Toronto, Sabrina could have stepped in as she had in July. I think in mid-to-late July and then into early August, Emily and Sabrina worked on Beth-Tamiel scenes. I went further back into Emily’s Instagram, and there were gaps in her posts by up to a few days in July. These gaps sometimes matched up to studio filming and secure outdoor filming, as episodes 6 and 7 were filmed in early-to-mid-July. (The Sanctuary set is in the studio.) For example, she didn’t post on July 15th, which was also there was filming in the Senoia Sanctuary studio and on Crooks Road (likely for the Michonne scene). The general audience will need those scenes to understand what actually happened and how TPTB smokescreened the whole narrative, offscreen.

I do not believe Sabrina accidentally wrote “July” instead of “August” as the picture was from her first day, on a major network show. You wouldn’t just mix up the months, especially if they were very different names. With all of that in mind, I compared the clothes in the trailer to Tamiel’s costume, and they are the same. Tamiel had two main shirts, and the top shirt is furthest from Sabrina, hanging backwards.

The missing Tamiel scenes likely showed Beth and/or Tamiel seeing Rick and Aaron, reporting the theft to Jadis, and then tracking the men, before splitting up at Alexandria. When Seth Gilliam was on 7x10′s Talking Dead, he was clearly nervous talking about Boots’s identity, and Pollyanna Macintosh kept her eyes on him (X). She was trying to help him stay with the story, she knows too. And why would she know, unless she filmed with Emily?

What if we won't see Boots again? And Beth just comes back?

I don’t think TPTB would waste the opportunity to full reveal Boots’s identity, since they went to the trouble of hiding her and then passing her off as Tamiel on Talking Dead. In 5x01, we saw Morgan from behind, and the scene was shot so he was revealed to us. It would be too disjointed to introduce Beth as Boots and then never follow through on that.

In order to find pictures, I have scrolled through Sabrina’s Instagram and Twitter accounts. She is more active on the former, and she often posts fan edits of this picture of Tamiel or of Tamiel and Jadis. She loves to promote her role on The Walking Dead. While doing research, I came across this tweet, and it caught my eye because of the second hashtag. This is the only time on her social media that I have seen Sabrina acknowledge that “Tamiel is Boots”. She posted this tweet the day after 7x10 aired, well after Talking Dead “confirmed” Boots’s identity. It’s strange, isn’t it? You think she would have posted more about that, since it was a big mystery going into the second half, and it directly involved her character. But, if she filmed with Emily (X), she would know the truth and thus would not want to feed the “Tamiel is Boots” story too much.
