It's called Biltong, it's an African snack that is dried meat! Any red meat can be dried with spices and it's really, really good.
Personally we just make my own with the spices we like. Biltong can be very dry or wet! It takes about a week to dry but is mainly made with game meet. (Only works on red meat).
We'll post a step by step when we ask the old Afrikaans guy for his recipe

5 Different Types of Biltong Meat
Tumblr media
The art of drying meat for storage and future use is as old as humanity itself. Particularly in South Africa, where the Khoikhoi, a tribe of the Khoisan ethnic group, exists along with the San or Bushmen.
They used to slice the meat into strips and air-dry it after salting it with vinegar and spices imported by the East India Company, including pepper, coriander, and cloves. Saltpetre was later introduced by the settlers to improve both its quality and safety for human consumption.
The literal meaning of Biltong is "meat strips or tongues", and it is derived from the combination of two nouns originating from Middle Dutch. They are “bille", which indicates a hind quarter cut of beef corresponding to the rump and "tonghe", which stands for "tongue" in the sense of "strip".
Beef has always been used to make biltong. The taste and texture it delivers play a key role in creating this delicacy. While the texture of the beef can either be tender and juicy or tough and crumbly, biltong is both sweet and spicy with hints of rich spices. In addition, beef is inexpensive and frequently available.
Origin of Biltong
Coriander is one of the primary spices in even the most basic biltong recipes. In January 2017, a research team at the University of Beira Interior in Portugal published a study on the antimicrobial properties of coriander oil against 12 bacterial strains.
They discovered that 10 of the 12 bacterial strains were killed with a relatively mild concentration of coriander oil. The coriander oil considerably inhibited the growth of the two organisms, Bacillus cereus and Enterococcus faecalis, that were not completely destroyed.
Southern Africa had a critical need for food preservation. It took a long time to establish cattle herds since iceboxes and refrigerators were not yet created. But because there was so much wildlife in Southern Africa, it was necessary to use conventional tactics.
Different Types of Biltong Meat
The five different types of biltong are as follows:
Fatty biltong meat
The most popular and loved item is fatty biltong! The Mufasa Grade Beef's fat content creates a buttery, savoury flavour that keeps the flesh juicy and moist. The softest item we provide is biltong. The biltong is dried as a piece of beef topside after being marinated in our special spice for 24 hours. This is also considered to be the most famous biltong in Perth.
Lean biltong meat
This is an air-dried delicacy made from top-quality Topside beef that is marinated with Mufasa’s own tested and proven spice formula. This comes best as spicy biltong.
Biltong Leaves
Biltong Leaves are slices of beef silverside cut into leaf-thin bits and cured in our original biltong spice then dried to perfection. They can have more or less fat according to their perfection. This comes best as smoked biltong.
Chilli Bites Biltong Stick
In South Africa, people frequently eat biltong chilli bites at sporting events since they are so delicious and handy as quick snacks.
Garlic Bites Biltong Sticks
Thin slices of lean and prime Topside beef spiced with South Africa’s own biltong recipe with a predominant taste of garlic.
Eating Styles of Biltong
There are several ways of enjoying biltong. A few hundred years ago, biltongs were the perfect on-the-go snack for South African people. This would provide them with the much-needed energy and protein while travelling in the most delicious way.
Along with being eaten as a snack, biltong can also be incorporated into stews, muffins, or pot bread. Additionally, biltong-flavoured cheese spreads are readily accessible, as have potato chips with a biltong flavour. Finely chopped biltong is eaten on pieces of bread and in sandwiches. Many like throwing it on top of salads to add that extra punch of protein to the dish. Adding protein will also help in feeling fuller for longer. Biltong has stood the test of time and has remained one of the most delicious protein-rich meat snacks.
Benefits of Savouring Biltong
The market is saturated with processed foods and snacks. However, people are becoming more mindful while consuming such foods and looking for healthier alternatives. To meet the need of modern people wanting less processed and more wholesome food, biltong is perfect. It can be a great healthy snack option for meat lovers. Biltong is made with natural ingredients making it a way healthier option than other meaty snacks like beef jerky. It is needless to mention how beef scores over other meats in nutrient factors. It serves more zinc, iron, B12, B6 and selenium on consumption than any other meat.
Biltong can also help babies who are teething, and it is reputedly one of the protein-rich foods. The majority of the protein content in biltong is protected during production, and typically 200 g of beef is required to produce 100 g of biltong. Proteins can make up as much as 67% of some biltong's constituents.
How Popular is Biltong?
In several other nations with sizable South African populations, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the United States, and India, biltong has gained appeal. Additionally, biltong is made by South African expatriate populations all over the world, including in Germany, Ireland, and even South Korea.
According to regulations established by HM Customs and Excise and its successor, HM Revenue and Customs, biltong made in South Africa cannot be imported into Britain; as a result, the product is made in the UK.
Conclusion
Biltong is very uncommon in the United States since beef jerky has historically been the more often consumed dry meat snack. Biltong has started to make a minor comeback in the United States over the past five years, thanks largely to South African immigrants who brought their native cuisine and culture with them.
The United States Department of Agriculture needs a meat inspection certificate issued by a South African government entity to accompany imports of biltong due to worries about the existence of the foot-and-mouth disease in South Africa.

Creative Ways to Incorporate Biltong into Your Cooking
Biltong has been making waves in the culinary world, gaining recognition as a versatile and flavourful ingredient that adds a unique twist to various dishes.
In this blog, we’ll delve into the world of biltong, exploring its origins, culinary potential, and health benefits. Whether you're a seasoned chef or a culinary enthusiast looking to experiment with new flavours, this blog will provide innovative ways to incorporate biltong Auckland into your cooking repertoire.
What is Biltong?
Biltong is a traditional South African air-dried meat snack made from beef, game, or ostrich meat. This method of preserving meat dates back to the early Dutch settlers and is characterised by its rich, savoury flavour and tender texture. Unlike jerky, which is thinly sliced and dehydrated, biltong is cured in larger chunks, resulting in a more succulent and robust taste. Its unique flavour profile, which combines the richness of meat with a hint of tangy and subtly spiced undertones, sets biltong apart as a culinary gem. This makes it an ideal ingredient for elevating the taste of various dishes, from appetisers to main courses.

Creative Biltong Recipes
A. Biltong and Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms
If you're looking for a tantalising appetiser to kick off your culinary adventure with biltong, consider preparing biltong and cheese-stuffed mushrooms. Begin by hollowing out button mushrooms and stuffing them with a delectable mixture of finely chopped biltong Auckland, cream cheese, and grated cheddar. Once baked to golden perfection, these savoury morsels offer a delightful contrast of textures and flavours, with the earthiness of the mushrooms complementing the richness of the biltong and cheese.
B. Biltong Pasta Salad with Avocado Dressing
For a refreshing twist on a classic pasta salad, infuse it with the robust essence of biltong. Toss cooked pasta with diced biltong, cherry tomatoes, and crisp lettuce, then drizzle with a creamy avocado dressing. The biltong adds a satisfying protein element to the salad, while its savoury notes mingle harmoniously with the creamy avocado dressing, creating a tantalising medley of flavours and textures.
C. Spicy Biltong Tacos with Homemade Salsa
Take your taco night to new heights by incorporating biltong into your taco filling. Sauté thinly sliced biltong with bell peppers and onions, then assemble the spicy biltong mixture into warm tortillas. Top it off with a zesty homemade salsa featuring diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. The bold flavours of the biltong infuse the taco filling with a rich, smoky taste, elevating the overall taco experience.
Health Benefits of Biltong
Aside from its culinary appeal, biltong also boasts several health benefits. It is a powerhouse of high-quality protein, making it an excellent choice for supporting muscle recovery and promoting satiety. Furthermore, biltong is low in sugar, carbs, and calories compared to other processed meat snacks, making it a healthier alternative for satisfying hunger pangs. Additionally, biltong is a rich source of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B12, contributing to overall well-being and vitality.
Where to Find Quality Biltong
When sourcing biltong for your culinary creations, it's essential to seek out high-quality options that are free from additives or preservatives. Look for reputable suppliers who prioritise traditional artisanal preparation methods, ensuring that the biltong retains its authentic flavour and nutritional integrity.
Conclusion
In conclusion, biltong presents a world of culinary possibilities, from appetisers to main courses, and even snack options. By incorporating biltong into your cooking, you not only elevate the flavour profile of your dishes but also tap into its nutritional benefits. I encourage you to embrace the culinary adventure of working with biltong and unleash your creativity in the kitchen. Let biltong Auckland be your flavourful companion on your culinary journey, adding a touch of South African charm to your dishes. Happy cooking and savouring the delightful flavours of biltong!

PIES
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When was the pie invented?
The Ancient Egyptians were the first to invent a dish close to what we know as a pie today. They had a honey filling covered in a crusty cake made from oats, wheat, rye or barley. A recipe for chicken pie was also discovered on a tablet carved prior to 2000 BC.
what can be in the national of Britain?
They gave us roads and running water and the Romans are also credited with giving us pie the first example of a meat filling enclosed in a basic pastry made of flour and oil can be traced back to ancient Rome.
Bake Off fans cry fowl over 'creepy' Ian's roadkill pies: Viewers left shocked after baker tells of 'passion' for using animals he finds in his creations
what I think people that can bake pies with dead or alive animals with I think is disgusting because it could carry insects and virus and diseases. but yet again if you haven't had anything eat in days so its understandable. using dead or alive animals was a good, yes's if you don't have enough ingredients but still disgusting.

It's a sweet bread that looks like a chimney but taste like heaven! You are walking through the streets of Prague in the Czech Republic and you get a urge for something to nipple on. you found a small market full of street foods. Being in Prague, you know that the best you can try will be the chimney cake. But without knowing what that is you ask a local stall owner about it and he or she had gladly produces something that looks like well a chimney. Behind the stall owner are rows of hot spit with dough wrapped around them ,cooking over heart source. This is chimney, but what does it taste like, you ask ? well its sweet. Fill it up with some ice cream and its even sweeter.
While it's the official dessert of Hungary, the chimney cake has made its way to the Czech Republic, where it has been perfected into the favourite street food of locals and tourists alike.
This is a spiral pastry is so delicious that will want to shell out for a couple, just to make sure that you have something else to munch on while you continue to browse through the stalls of the local market.

Poutine, Canada
This is an Canada's Unoffocial "Official side dish and street food." Many people have actually heard of Poutine, seemingly the office snack of Canada, but a lot of people may not know what they are. Well, it is so popular in Canada that city of Ottawa actually has a Poutine Festival where you can try over 100 different types of recipes for the street food snacks, along with contests that related to the stuff. So what is anyway? It is probably one of the simplest street food out there, just smothered fries. Smothered with cheese curds and gravy, to be exact. Poutine mean "messy," and this street food really is not meant to be eaten without a fork. But imagine when you bite into the cheesy gravy gooeyness covering the crispy hot fries. you will be glad that you stopped at the festival in Ottawa or at any of the street vendors throughout Canada that sell Poutine. Not exactly a delicacy, but definitely something associated with Canada and warm home-cooked snack or side dish or light meal. Poutine puts together some of the greatest flavour's into a food combinations that is not to be missed if you happen to be visiting Canada. Of course, it is so simple to make that you can find it else where, including if you want to make it yourself.
what i think of the Poutine of fries, i think its quite unique how they mixed gravy and cheese with the fries and it actually looks quite nice to eat.

Biltong, South Africa
This is south Africa , Now that's jerky!. In south Africa, you keep hearing about something called "biltong" and you figure you figure you should investigate what is it. In the streets of a Johannesburg, you stop in a little shop with a sign advertising that they have the best Biltong available. Inside, you see another sign above racks of what looks like dried meat. Beef jerky? Not exactly, you are told. It is jerky, but is is an exotic animals, like ostrich and kudu. But, is it still jerky? The shop owner shakes his head and declares that is it cured in apple cider vinegar or malt vinegar then rubbed with spices like black pepper, coriander, and brown sugar. This is getting interesting. The slices are very thick, bordering on small slabs of meat, so you buy one, maybe two for good measure. This is unlike any jerky you have ever tried. The flavour is so intense, so concentrated, it tastes different that you have expected, partly because it is such a thick piece of meat. You are told that it is not smoked. It is jerky at its essence. Stepping back out into the street, you decided that you made a good choice stopping and seeing what Biltong is all about.
