Oh!!!! It was the ice lodging in the propeller that threw Billy Orren to his death. I didn't catch that the first time. There is SO MUCH GOING ON in this episode. I'm not even halfway through yet and I find myself stopping to post like every three minutes to yell again!

round 2 of
*not strictly a "how do you imagine you'd die" question. Can be also read as "how do you wish to die". Just know that in this 1845 expedition you WILL die, so choose wisely.

The Terror Scariest Moment Round 1. Match 1.
Tumblr media
David Young’s Pre-death Hallucination
Propoganda: The first warning sign that the show is going to be more than a period piece, completely unexpected and super confusing on a first watch, but leaves you with a total sense of dread for whatever’s about to happen…
Tumblr media
Billy Orren’s Death
Propoganda: Kicks off the wonderful collection of miserable deaths in the Terror. The sound design of his body hitting the rigging before he falls off the boat is nightmarish. Made worse by the fact he survives and gets to panic in the freezing water before slowly sinking.

Still thinking about Collins and his relationship with identity and responsibility.
Like, it's so SO important to him right from the start.
That's not just any faceless seamen down in the water.
BILLY ORREN. THAT'S WHO IT IS.
A real human being. That's who it is.
A real human being whose safety I was responsible for and who I have now, through no fault of my own, failed in my duty towards. THAT'S WHO IT IS.
I think it comes out later in his conversation with Goodsir a bit too.
My nose and my stomach, they don't know horrible from supper... BUT I DO. I DO!
I'm still a real human being. That's who I am.
A real human being who knows right from wrong and is trying so very hard to do the former. That's who I am.
A real human being who is not only clinging white-knuckled to his sanity but to his humanity too. THAT'S WHO I AM.

10 little sailors
Ten little sailors were drinking wine, one coughed up some blood and then there were nine.
Nine little sailors tried to rescue a mate, one drowned in the sea and then there were eight.
Eight little sailors talked about Heaven, one fell into a hole and then there were seven.
Seven little sailors were cleaning candlesticks, one set himself on fire and then there were six.
Six little sailors tried to stay alive, one ran into a knife and then there were five.
Five little sailors felt a little sore, one ingested poison and then there were four.
Four little sailors said “What will be will be”, one walked out into nothingness and then there were three.
Three little sailors were eating a shoe, one died of scurvy and then there were two.
Two little sailors ran to grab a gun, one charged a giant bear and then there was one.
One little sailor sat under the sun. He tried to challenge the bear…
And then there were none.

Tuunbaq for the ask! I'm really interested in knowing the scariest scene for you
I was frightened by the show my first watch, but like I will say it's not the scariest show I've ever seen. Yet I think it also got scarier at times but more interesting to me too as I rewatched. Now this complicates my answer as to what the scariest scene is in my opinion. The Collins, Billy Orren scene in episode 1 is ICONIC and brilliant and im so normal about it. Collins has to face the failure of not saving that poor guy while leaving a physical mark as the journey to nothing begins. And I also love the juxtaposition etc of Franklin frog face being like "man its so cool u did that i wish i could be there" and Collins having his emotional breakdown deep inside. Like a dream sir. Yeah.
But I also think the carnival death scene needs a shout out bc the music editing/audio mixing, the chaos of it all, Tozer & Heather, Fitzjames, rip MacDonald, I literally cant be normal about that scene. Generally A Mercy is such an EPISODE. And not keep not answering specifically what's the scariest scene, but I had such a visceral reaction to Irving's death, the audio mixing once again makes me froth at the mouth, and it gave me shivers and stuff the first time. I guess any time the audio mixing starts going nuts I start going "aaah" in a scared but thrilled way.

I really gotta remember every single time I get bummed out worrying if nobody is gonna like the lady terror story because a lot of it is her observing the story of the terror as it unfolds I remember that perspective is a hell of a drug and as iwtv showed me it can really make a HELL of a difference

weird how frequently des voeux seems to be handing people ropes / throwing ropes (or procuring chains, perchance?) in order to deliver them from death (and then failing to successfully do so). idk what it means but it IS interesting i guess

also for the game pls Billy OrrenxHenry Collins AU wher3 Billy lives somehow, amputations optional
Henry sneaks down after dinner, when the sickbay is quiet and the doctor on duty has long since turned a blind eye to his ingress like so much warm water. Billy's fourth finger lost the battle with frostbite today, leaving him with only the thumb on his bandage-swathed left hand, but Henry considers it a small price for his chest to still rise and fall beneath the blankets - the drugged stupor of the earlier amputation leaving him at peace, for now.
There's still a right hand to hold as he takes his customary seat by the sickbed, worn in over the long weeks since pulling his beloved from the frozen sea, and that must be enough.

"It wasn't you who cursed us."
Tumblr media
In a world where magic is relatively commonplace if not particularly scientifically studied, amateur curse breaker in addition to anatomist Harry Goodsir joins the Franklin Expedition and finds a rare friend and kindness in Billy Orren. He doesn't notice he only sees Billy at night in the company of a large black dog, and awkwardly interacts with Henry Collins and his apparently trained osprey in the day.
For my first @theterrorbigbang I got the pleasure of illustrating Three Poor Mariners by the lovely @meduseld, a Goodsir/Collins\Orren Ladyhawke AU crafted with much love for the Erebites and great attention to detail (and the best throuple cuddles and fun symbolism and some amazingly atmospheric fantasy scenes). Go check it out >:3

After the unexpected dead of his partner, Billy Orren, Henry Collins accepts a job as the caretaker of an isolated Victorian manor in the countryside, currently undergoing renovations. At first, everything's alright: he settles into the house and his responsibilities, takes walks and makes new friends among the builders and the estate's attorney, John Bridgens. Things get better, he starts to heal.
That’s when the ghosts appear.
Lucky for him, his uni friend Johnny Hartnell’s little brother, Tom, and his best friend, Harry Peglar, have recently broken away from a famous ghost hunting YouTube channel and are looking for a good project to start anew.
It was an absolute delight and I feel very lucky to have illustrated for my first @theterrorbigbang with the wonderful orchis @bloomrebounds for her fic Baby, if you wake up in the middle of the night it’s a great fun read and you should definitely check it out 🩷

have you noticed that cdv always looks kind of scrungy and dirty. like his cleanest look was carnivale and/or billy orrens death scene
How did I not see this YEAH he’s always just a wee bit filthy . Which is very interesting to me because he’s on Erebus
Thats James’ ship. Remember “your nails are a Terror Mr. Wentzell”? I don’t think it’s characteristic of him to let anyone be that like. Dirty in general. And depending on how you interpret the scene (though I believe it was Dave who confirmed it was physical dirtiness) Hickey’s punishment is exacerbated when Crozier tacks on dirtiness as an offense. It’s very much not the sort of thing you can get away with easily on a Navy ship
And he’s sort of an officer, but not in the way Gore and Dundy are officers; he’s a friend of Hodgson, but they’re on opposite ships. So he really doesn’t have a lot of people lined up to protect him from punishment if he violates minor rules the way people closer to Fitzjames do, and this is likely made worse by his … behavior in general. Few people probably are terribly bothered by his microaggressions and more macro aggressions against Silna but he also has that particular older teen weird comment charm that makes him Say things that nobody really likes
And while part of his scrunginess is probably just. Characteristic of Charlie idk I think it’s very interesting that he has a lot to lose by maintaining scrunginess like that (and a lot of factors that make it difficult for him to stay scrungy) and yet… he scrungs on..
So sorry that was really long but ultimately YES he’s always at least a little scrungy, carnivale being the second least scrungy we ever see him (I do believe Billy Orren’s death is the cleanest he presents in the show, but this is before it all goes downhill) and based on the overall timeline I think it’s an interesting contrast to characters like fitzjames and very particularly Jopson BUT WAIT!
More jopson thoughts because he became Lieutenant when they needed another officer even though Charlie was already supposed to be promoted. He *passed his lieutenant exam before they set sail* and the only reason he was taken on as Just a mate is because all the lieutenant positions were full. As the Erebus lieutenants drop like flies throughout the series there are many points when by all rights he should have been promoted to fill their absence but he’s not
And then when Jopson is promoted (a steward!) over Charlie (actually a lieutenant!) I think this is a point after which his scrunginess really snowballs. Jopson has always been careful not to let inner turmoil show on the outside, but aside from his snarky comments Charlie’s outer appearance very much does reflect his inner turmoil, which compounds steadily post Billy Orren, is slightly relieved by the carnivale festivities, and then takes a sharp downturn toward the end. Just a thought ..
