round 2 of
*not strictly a "how do you imagine you'd die" question. Can be also read as "how do you wish to die". Just know that in this 1845 expedition you WILL die, so choose wisely.

The Terror Scariest Moment Round 1. Match 1.
Tumblr media
David Young’s Pre-death Hallucination
Propoganda: The first warning sign that the show is going to be more than a period piece, completely unexpected and super confusing on a first watch, but leaves you with a total sense of dread for whatever’s about to happen…
Tumblr media
Billy Orren’s Death
Propoganda: Kicks off the wonderful collection of miserable deaths in the Terror. The sound design of his body hitting the rigging before he falls off the boat is nightmarish. Made worse by the fact he survives and gets to panic in the freezing water before slowly sinking.

Still thinking about Collins and his relationship with identity and responsibility.
Like, it's so SO important to him right from the start.
That's not just any faceless seamen down in the water.
BILLY ORREN. THAT'S WHO IT IS.
A real human being. That's who it is.
A real human being whose safety I was responsible for and who I have now, through no fault of my own, failed in my duty towards. THAT'S WHO IT IS.
I think it comes out later in his conversation with Goodsir a bit too.
My nose and my stomach, they don't know horrible from supper... BUT I DO. I DO!
I'm still a real human being. That's who I am.
A real human being who knows right from wrong and is trying so very hard to do the former. That's who I am.
A real human being who is not only clinging white-knuckled to his sanity but to his humanity too. THAT'S WHO I AM.

Three Poor Mariners
My Terror Big Bang fic @theterrorbigbang Magic AU is here with incredible art from @multiiocular-mushroom
Tumblr media
Harry Goodsir, anatomist and amateur curse breaker, joins the Franklin Expedition for both science and adventure. He doesn’t expect to fall in love, much less that doing so might save them all.

10 little sailors
Ten little sailors were drinking wine, one coughed up some blood and then there were nine.
Nine little sailors tried to rescue a mate, one drowned in the sea and then there were eight.
Eight little sailors talked about Heaven, one fell into a hole and then there were seven.
Seven little sailors were cleaning candlesticks, one set himself on fire and then there were six.
Six little sailors tried to stay alive, one ran into a knife and then there were five.
Five little sailors felt a little sore, one ingested poison and then there were four.
Four little sailors said “What will be will be”, one walked out into nothingness and then there were three.
Three little sailors were eating a shoe, one died of scurvy and then there were two.
Two little sailors ran to grab a gun, one charged a giant bear and then there was one.
One little sailor sat under the sun. He tried to challenge the bear…
And then there were none.

#I think this is a subtle but defining scene of the terror#henry collins is a man who was going to dive in to try and save billy orren after billy orren had already drowned#the grief of it messed him up So bad that he 'saw' Orren's body coming to drown him while he was in the diving suit#and he's only IN the dive suit because he pulled the short straw#the contrast between henry collins being willing to jump in for his men vs collins being FORCED in by command is so stark#collins doesn't WANT to dive. he doesn't WANT to risk his life trying to fix Erebus and find some stupid northwest passage#and I fully believe that is the moment he realizes it—and on reflection the moment the tone of the show changes#yes it was spooky (thank you David Young). yes it was eerie. but THIS is when it turns to horror at least for me#not even Billy Orren's corpse. when Henry Collins doesn't want to dive and is begging for a surgeon on deck#when he's begging men who didnt WANT to save billy orren to save him. when he is DEPENDING on men like that to save him#and when he comes up. what the fuck is command concerned about?#the fucking SHIP#Franklin even SAYS he wants to 'go below' and ASKS WHAT IT WAS LIKE — but of course he's too valuable to go himself#and what else is Collins supposed to say? how to describe the feeling of unreality he faced down there?#Henry Collins goes into the dive suit when things are clear. and when he comes out everything from then on is dreamlike and hazy#in the show too. this is when the events begin to happen#IDK I think a lot of people reckon David Young is the beginning of the horror in the Terror. but I think David Young seeing the shaman#was a kindness. 'he wants us to run'. he wants to warn them not to come and not to stay#it's only after they've ignored the warning and Collins has now been viscerally affected that the bad things truly start to happen#SORRY FOR THE ESSAY OP (via @tommyjop)
literally do not apologize this is excellent analysis and it shouldn't be kept in the tags!!!
i don’t always think about the tragedy of henry collins - bright, caring, capable, fucked over by his commanding officers who couldn’t be assed to have a surgeon on deck (not that they could do anything but still) - but rewatching his dive has me near tears

I really gotta remember every single time I get bummed out worrying if nobody is gonna like the lady terror story because a lot of it is her observing the story of the terror as it unfolds I remember that perspective is a hell of a drug and as iwtv showed me it can really make a HELL of a difference

weird how frequently des voeux seems to be handing people ropes / throwing ropes (or procuring chains, perchance?) in order to deliver them from death (and then failing to successfully do so). idk what it means but it IS interesting i guess

"It wasn't you who cursed us."
Tumblr media
In a world where magic is relatively commonplace if not particularly scientifically studied, amateur curse breaker in addition to anatomist Harry Goodsir joins the Franklin Expedition and finds a rare friend and kindness in Billy Orren. He doesn't notice he only sees Billy at night in the company of a large black dog, and awkwardly interacts with Henry Collins and his apparently trained osprey in the day.
For my first @theterrorbigbang I got the pleasure of illustrating Three Poor Mariners by the lovely @meduseld, a Goodsir/Collins\Orren Ladyhawke AU crafted with much love for the Erebites and great attention to detail (and the best throuple cuddles and fun symbolism and some amazingly atmospheric fantasy scenes). Go check it out >:3

also for the game pls Billy OrrenxHenry Collins AU wher3 Billy lives somehow, amputations optional
Henry sneaks down after dinner, when the sickbay is quiet and the doctor on duty has long since turned a blind eye to his ingress like so much warm water. Billy's fourth finger lost the battle with frostbite today, leaving him with only the thumb on his bandage-swathed left hand, but Henry considers it a small price for his chest to still rise and fall beneath the blankets - the drugged stupor of the earlier amputation leaving him at peace, for now.
There's still a right hand to hold as he takes his customary seat by the sickbed, worn in over the long weeks since pulling his beloved from the frozen sea, and that must be enough.

After the unexpected dead of his partner, Billy Orren, Henry Collins accepts a job as the caretaker of an isolated Victorian manor in the countryside, currently undergoing renovations. At first, everything's alright: he settles into the house and his responsibilities, takes walks and makes new friends among the builders and the estate's attorney, John Bridgens. Things get better, he starts to heal.
That’s when the ghosts appear.
Lucky for him, his uni friend Johnny Hartnell’s little brother, Tom, and his best friend, Harry Peglar, have recently broken away from a famous ghost hunting YouTube channel and are looking for a good project to start anew.
It was an absolute delight and I feel very lucky to have illustrated for my first @theterrorbigbang with the wonderful orchis @bloomrebounds for her fic Baby, if you wake up in the middle of the night it’s a great fun read and you should definitely check it out 🩷

Speaking of obsessing over a character so minor he was played by a stuntman to facilitate his near immediate on-screen death, to function as the symbolic herald of doom even more so that David Young, I’ve built up a Billy Orren in my head who is essentially “Hickey, but in the opposite direction”.
Or that is to say, older than the other ABs and very experienced, Billy is, like Hickey, actively hiding being gay and having a not so savory lower-class origin story and running off to sea to avoid it as well as deliberately ingratiating himself with command. The difference being, Billy’s no con-artist or proto-deserter. He’s truly good at his job and likes being at sea (and surrounded by men natch) as well as setting himself up as pointman between command and the ABs. He’s been here before, he knows it’s best. And unlike “everyone thinks he’s a freak even his friends”, everybody genuinely likes Billy. He’s extremely solid, reliable, a “brick to us boys”, dependable and easy to go to. Gets along with everyone, by design but without malice.
Henry Collins is a mistake. Not at the start, he knows to get in good with the Second Master and quickly becomes his right hand man and that’s great that’s the damn plan, to have Collins think of him first, rely on him. But he doesn’t bank on liking Collins. Generally “not overly incompetent or too dickish” is the best you can hope for. But Collins. It’s just so easy to talk to him, to say things he didn’t plan on, to actually talk about himself when Billy’s usual trick is to get the others talking and nod along. Seem like you had a great convo, but reveal nothing and cultivate good feeling but no real connection with others. The thing is something between him and Collins’ clicks, and Collins actually listens and Billy, for once, dwells on the social barriers between them when he’s usually an accept and adapt sort of guy. He wants to be close to Collins, for real this time, and Collins seems to be into him back. Collins trusts him. And sends him up to teach a kid some becket bends and Billy never comes back.
