crowd vs. critic single take // HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016)
The facts of the case of the Texas Midland bank robbers are scant. Two masked men appear in the same chain of banks, asking for the same bills out of the top drawer. “These boys know exactly what they’re doing,” Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) decides. “They’re trying to raise a certain amount.” On the cusp of retirement, he and his partner (Gil Birmingham) are tracking the pair of thieves.
What they don’t know: They’re chasing brothers. Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner Howard (Ben Foster) are indeed keeping a close count of their total cash haul, but they’re keeping mum on its purpose. Now it’s a race to the finish line: Will the cops catch the robbers in the act, or will the brothers complete their string of heists?
CROWD // Hell or High Water is water in the desert: A modern Western. Most weekends, cops and robbers in the movies chase each other through an urban landscape or with a superhero twist. This movie does not prioritize grittiness in the way we’ve come to know it in blockbusters: Here the visual grit comes from dust on the farm, not the explosion caused by a villain’s weapon.
Sometimes violent and sometimes admittedly slow, the energy does begin to sag in the middle when the action takes a pause. But its biggest strength never wavers: You have no idea where this story is going. Stories about whom we owe our loyalty to (in this case, our family or the law) are nothing new, but Hell or High Water never lets this one become predictable.
POPCORN POTENTIAL: 8/10
CRITIC // Hell or High Water is an anomaly of a late August release. Often the dumping ground for studios’ so-so features, that month doesn’t suit director David Mackenzie’s twist on the Cain and Abel story. Taylor Sheridan’s script has a rock solid foundation in both plotting and characterization, the latter giving the performers plenty to work with.
Bridges is doing what Bridges does best, but Pine proves he’s got more in him than Captain Kirk with the sorrowful and devoted Toby. Foster is near-unrecognizable behind that scraggly hair and those sunglasses, but it’s the best kind of unrecognizable for an actor with so many credits. No disrespect to Bridges, but I would’ve given the Best Supporting Actor nomination to Foster for the dominating presence and compassionate tenderness he balances. The seven-time-nominated and once-winning Bridges, meanwhile, seems to be playing a cousin of his character in True Grit.
ARTISTIC TASTE: 9/10
