I got an 11.5 inch Hong Kong Lilli recently (I’d love an actual Bild Lilli in that size one day but the prices are crazy). The Hong Kong Lilli’s were actually cast from the original Bild Lilli molds, after the original manufacturer sold the molds to a toy factory in Hong Kong (which they did after selling the rights to Bild Lilli to Mattel after a lawsuit against Mattel). The Hong Kong Lilli’s were made of thinner lighter plastic, and usually had a much more slap dash assembly with a lot of messy glue and face paint.

I’m not done with the restoration of this doll yet, it’s been very difficult and I’m trying to stay motivated so I thought I’d post what I’ve done so far.

This poor doll has definitely seen some things in the last 60 years:

After scrubbing and scraping off as much old glue as I could, I restrung the doll (Bild Lilli was strung on elastic, and the Hong Kong Lilli’s are assembled the same way) and opened up the head to get rid of the old glue and broken hair. It was gross.

I then removed the old paint, and did a repaint where I tried to capture the actual Lilli-ness of the sculpt:

I now need to add new hair and reattach the head cap, which sounds simple but has been a pain so far. Hopefully my next update will be once this has been completed.

There were a few, actually, and not just potential glue-headed dolls to murder/experiment on test head glue removal methods on...

The first I noticed was the curvy MTM, and that was from the auction thumbnail.

I also saw Scooter from that same tiny thumbnail. She has a rather distinct look. Scooter prompted me to look closer.

Then I saw some more vintage legs. Skipper.

But then also...

Nobody in this one who even are these people? (that is joke I do recognize most of these)

Uneeda Wendy rerooted in Dolly Hair Snowflake white. She only has holes around her hairline and a second line for her bangs so all she can do is a ponytail. Will trim and style better soon.

The doll was 15 inches tall, so a pretty big teenage fashion doll.

She is considered a « clone » of the famous Barbie, but even Barbie can be considered a clone if you take into consideration that she was modeled after bild Lilli.

She can be a little mean looking, with her black arched eyebrows, but nevertheless she’s a beautiful doll

So I have had NO luck at Savers lately but today I found a bag with a familiar face and two other clones so I decided it would be fun.

Even though I collect vintage dolls like crazy I’ve never bought a Sindy doll online, only in person and only cuz I know it’s a treat finding one irl. Unfortunately she seems to be from the “Pedigree is dying, let's toss anything together” cuz her legs are completely diff lengths and she has a hard head and really nasty hair.

I don’t know who this one armed red head is, and the bild Lilli clone has a nice dress if a bit sloppily made but for $5 but it’s fun.
