Lesson Plans - Part 1

Summary: Biker Hal Carter and Sheriff Lee Bodecker compete for your affections. Who will you choose?

Warnings: Implied abuse, Mentions of a character's death, Teaching stress. Please let me know if I missed any!

Hal never thought he'd be living a semi-domestic life. As much as he'd once had the goal of getting a cushy office job and a pretty wife, joining the Snowpiercer biker gang had been life changing. He'd loved the camaraderie, yes, but his first time on a motorcycle was invigorating. He often compared it to flying and loved every moment of it.

But then his brother, Jefferson, called and told him his wife had passed away. With Curtis's blessing, Hal left the group and went to help Jefferson and his baby girl, Grace. He started working, unofficially, at Jefferson's coffee and tea shop so Jefferson could focus on taking care of Grace, and himself, without having to worry about the bills or groceries. He would also do fixes around the place, becoming a general handyman, so that Jefferson wouldn't have to sweat so many expenses.

It's been a few years and Hal's little family has reached a kind of normalcy. Jefferson still has his bad days, but Hal makes sure to help him through. Whether it's by giving him space and taking Grace for a walk or sitting with him and letting him go on about his late wife.

Hal was never sure he'd be one for settling down, but seeing how much love Jefferson still has for his wife makes him reconsider. Especially if it resulted in a baby as sweet and good as Grace. Hal flirts with pretty much every woman he sees but, between work and family, he just doesn't have time for dating. But he doesn't begrudge his brother and niece. He'd give the world for them. But now that Grace was going to be at school all day, maybe he'd have the time to start looking for something serious.

Lee often joked that he was "married to the job". The officers on his force would agree. The man was dedicated to his work, taking the role of "public servant" seriously. Whether it was taking care of people during an emergency, making sure people felt safe in their daily life, or taking down criminals.

Ever since he was a kid, Lee wanted nothing else but to be a sheriff. He worked his entire life towards that goal. His parents had hoped he'd set his goals elsewhere and tried to push him into a career that paid better and was a lot safer, but he wasn't having it. Lee was nothing if not driven.

The problem was, all he had in his life now was his job. He was grateful the people of the county continued to trust him and his record well enough to keep electing him. His competition always had an advantage on him in terms of being "family people". They always played at being relatable because they had spouses and children while all he had was his record. But apparently that was enough for the voters.

Still, there were a lot of lonely nights and poor eating. He never had time or energy to cook. Never had time or energy to put into a relationship. But this election cycle he was running unopposed. Maybe it would be a good time to start looking for fulfillment outside of work.

It's your first day on the job in a new town. You hated leaving your job in the city, there were so many good memories. Unfortunately, there were even more bad memories. Your ex-boyfriend, Colin, and his friend, Detective Diskant, made sure of it. Colin had been such a flirt, you should've seen the red flags, but he was so charming. At first. It didn't matter which officers you tried to report him to, Diskant made sure to intercept and nothing would happen.

So you packed up and moved out to the middle of nowhere. You had no savings left after your move, having spent every penny just getting the hell out. But you'd make do on a threadbare budget. You've done it before, pretty much every day since you started college. That's probably just how it will always be. Coupons and penny pinching forever.

But at least you can still have a good life. Starting over doesn't have to be a bad thing. You'll just focus on work, your students, and try your best to forget about men.

The amazing @spacemansam drew this beautiful beyond words drawing for me based on this fic. I’m deeply honored and so moved and touched by this. This drawing has also given me an insprition for more Hal and his Diner Gal :) so maybe we’ll see more of them again. 

Wiping her hands on her apron she looks around and takes a breath, the lunch rush was in full swing but that was fine, more hungry mouths more tips. Looking around her eyes land on the person she partly wanted to see but partly didn’t. Taking a breath and grabbing her notepad she walks over.

He looked devilishly handsome, his long legs with his boots as he sat on the stool, his charming blue eyes twinkling as he chewed on a straw. His eyes finally glancing up.

“Well if it isn’t the most prettiest Doll in the world.” Rolling her eyes she eyes him tapping her pen against her pad.

“What do you want today Hal?” His smirk grows as he takes her in, he loves her little waitress uniform. her cute little 50′s style skirt, he loved everything about it. Oh, what he’d want to do...

“Earth to Hal?” His eyes snap up as he smiles he sets up.

“Oh, the usual Darling.” She chuckles and heads behind the counter. Hal watches her as she makes his strawberry milkshake. 

“So... Doll... I was wondering if you’d like to go for a ride on my bike. I hear there’s going to be a pretty little meteorite shower, thought we could pack a picnic and enjoy ourselves.” He winks as she turns around and smiles.

“I’m sure there are plenty of other girls who would love to ride on your bike Hal.” She slides his milkshake to him. He sighs as she smiles and walks off her skirt sashaying... Why can’t she see that she’s the only girl. Grumbling and a bit of his pride hurt he walks back to his boys.

“Something tells me you struck out again.” Hal Rolls his eyes at his VP Tuck.

“It’s like she just ignores everything I say.” Hal watches as she smiles and tends to customers. He could watch her all day.

“Prospects listen up, this an example of what you should never do since our President here is a bad example learn from his mistakes.” Tuck slaps his shoulder hooting and laughing. 

The bell diner rings as someone walks in. Hal looks up at the new person, he was not from here that’s for sure. He watches as he takes a seat he wore a worn leather jacket, his jeans were old and worn. Hal didn’t like the vibe he was giving off. And of course, you, as smiley as could be was heading to his table.

“Hi welcome to Ruby’s Diner how can I help you?” The man looks up and smiles. His trail down.

“Well, pretty lady how about a name.” Taking a deep breath, you just hold your pen and pad and smile.

“I recommend our milkshakes and burgers.” His smirk widens.

“Oh, I bet your milkshakes bring all the guys around.” You stare at him in annoyance and sigh.

“Will, you just tell me what you want? If you don’t want anything then I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” The man just smirks he likes them feisty.

“A milkshake would be nice, a nice chocolate one at that.” You just nod and go to turn as his hand reaches out and grabs your ass. You jump at the contact but before you can say anything.

“I think you best be leaving now.” You look to see Hal and his entire gang with angry faces standing tall. 

“Now easy there I meant no harm just a little grab you loved it didn’t you sweets?” Hal grabs him and pulls him up.

“We do not disrespect women do you understand me, now if you’d kindly  move your slimy ass out of here you are not welcome in this diner.” 

“Boys why don’t you escort our friend out of here and teach him a thing or two on how we treat women in our town.”

Tuck and the other bikers nod and smirk as Tuck drags him outside. 

Hal walks over to you.

“You okay darling?” You nod and smile.

“What would I do without you oh Mr. Carter.” You smile and bump his shoulder. He grabs your wrist gently.

“Go on a ride with me, go on a picnic with me. I’m serious, I don’t want anyone but you riding on my bike.” 

You get lost in his big blue eyes your breathing stops as he gently places a strand of hair behind your ear. You try and get your breathing back to normal but can’t.

“Please Darling Doll.” You slowly find yourself nodding as you smile.

“Okay, 6 O’Clock on the dot.” Hal breaks out in a smile as he leans up and kisses your cheek.

“Wear something you can ride comfortably in. I’ll take care of everything, oh! One request will you make one of those Cherry pies I love so much.” He winks as you nod as he hurries out.

“Where are you going?” He stops pulling out his keys.

“I have to get  everything ready.” He smiles as he rushes out. You walk to the window and watch him as he jumps on his motorcycle and drives off. 

You smile to yourself.  

You had a pie to make better get to making it.

The beeping sound of your alarm annoyed you as you eyed the phone. You sigh and roll into the big warm chest of Hal. He pops open an eye and chuckles.

“Call off.” He mumbles as you shake your head.

“I have to work it’s Pie day at The Diner, otherwise I would,” Hal whines as you kiss him he pulls you on top of him.

You smirk straddling him as your hands trail down his body. Hal’s eyes darken as you bite your lip.

“I could be a little late.” Hal thrusts his hips up into you as you wiggle your eyebrows at him.

“Please Darling....” You chuckle as feel how needy he is.

“Last night wasn’t enough for you Hal?” He lets out a low growl as you feel his erection hit your thigh. You chuckle as you lean down and kiss him deeply as Hal tangles his fingers in your hair.

“Darling, Baby please.” He moans as slowly aline yourself with his entrance and slam down on him.

“Fuck baby.” Hal throws his head back as you rock back and forth on him. Hal thursts deep inside you as you grab onto the headboard. Hal smirks as his hands rest on your hips as you move up and down on him.

“Just call off we can do this all morning.” Hal moans as his hands dig deep in your hips. You smirk as you ride him hard. Mornings with Hal was always your favorite.

“It’s Pie Wednesday I can’t.” You lean down as you bite down on his ear. Hal moans as you smirk.

“Be a good boy and maybe I’ll call off tomorrow.” Hal nods as he stares up as you.

“Now as much as I enjoy riding you we have to hurry up,” Hal smirks as he flips you on your back.

“Then allow me.” He grows in your ear. You look up at him his body and eyes moving in such a motion. 

“Of course baby.” You smirk at him.

With it being Pie Wednesday you had to rush. Hal watches you sprawled on the bed looking up at you. 

“How did I get so lucky?” He whispers as you turn and smile at him as you fix your skirt. You tie your apron around your waist as you put on your little hat. 

“I’m the lucky one Sugar.” You wink as you lean over and kiss him sweetly. Hal sigh as he wraps an arm around you.

“I’ll be in shortly, the boys need me to do some Biker stuff. Plus General is getting a new paint job.” Your eyes light up.

“Oh is General getting that Cherry red?” Hal smiles big.

“Yes and tonight I’ll pick you up and well go for a ride.” You smile big.

“I love you, Hal.” You kiss him but stop realizing what you said. Hal’s eyes widen a little as you stand up.

“Well, I better go.” Hal just stares after you as you hurry out.

Way to go saying I love you that was smart you could smack yourself.

You were a little unfocused after that. You got all your Pies done and everything seemed great. 

“I love you, Hal.” Keeps going off in your head. How could you have said that? Well, it was true you were in love with Hal, you’ve had a thing for Hal since the first time he rode up on his motorcycle and ordered a milkshake from you. He was charming and dashing even if everyone said to stay away from Hal and his biker gang.

Hal and his gang had always looked out and protected your diner, helped out when you needed it. Even before Hal and you dated he would wait with you during your shift. 

You really hope saying I love you didn’t ruin it.

“Hey! Long-time no see Ruby.” You stop as there sat Tommy Olson. You shake your head.

“Hey, Tommy what brings you in?” Tommy just smiles big seeing you.

“Well, I hear its Pie Wednesday.” You smile and nod.

“It is so what slice do you want?” Tommy just smiles as he gently places a hand on your lower back.

“Well... Why not one slice of each. Especially from such a beautiful woman like you.” You shake your head as you nod.

Tommy watches you and smiles as you bring him a slice of each pie.

“That’s a lot of pie for one person.” Tommy just chuckles.

“Yeah well, your the best pie maker in the town.” You smile at that as Tommy can’t take his eyes off you.

“So I was wondering... Would you love to accompany me to dinner and a movie? Frank’s Pasta like old times.” Your eyes look up at him.

“Oh Tommy that’s very sweet of you but I’m seeing someone.” Tommy frowns at that.

“I heard I was hoping that wasn’t true,  Hal the Biker... He always had a thing for you” You eye him hard,

“Hal is a gentleman and is not what some people say he is.” Tommy eyes you as he eats a slice of pie.

“I see.” You sigh and start to leave as Tommy gently grabs your wrist.

“I just worry about you, you have the biggest heart ever, you have always been very special to me.” You stop as he gently reaches up to cup your cheeks...

*Ding* The bell on the door goes off as Hal walks in but stops.

You pull free from Tommy as you walk back to your station.

Hal eyes Tommy as Tommy looks over he nods at Hal.

Hal tries to keep cool as he walks over and sits on his normal stool.

You turn around and light up seeing him.

“Hey, stranger.” Hal just smiles at you. 

“Hey doll, you Olsen looked cozy.” You stop as his eyes darken.

“What does that mean? Tommy is a friend, yes, but I made it very clear that you and I are together.” Hal just scuffs as he chews on a straw.

“Sure looked like friends.” You stare at him.

“What is your problem? Tommy is a friend nothing more, Hal.” 

Hal does a dark laugh.

“Really a friend? You know doll he’s always had a thing for you, all those little dinners he’d take you too back in the day. Well and he could afford that.” 

Your eyes wide at Hal’s words.

“Outside now.” You mutter as you walk around the counter and outside. Hal just follows you.

You stare at Hal shaking your head. As you pace Hal just eyes you.

“Darling, what are you really doing with a guy like me?” Your eyes flash to him as Hal just puts his hands in his pockets.

“Why are we back to this Hal? Is it because I said I love you? I’m sorry if that scared you but I meant it. Hal, your not what some people call you or say about you, you are so much more than what they say. Hal why can’t you see that?”

Hal just shakes his head as his eyes meet yours as he looks sad. 

“This is as far as it ever goes with me, Darling.” Your eyes wide at that.

“What are you saying?” Hal just smiles small at you as he leans in and kisses your head.

“I’ll make sure the boys keep an eye on here. You take care okay.” You grab his arm.

“Hal stop it. What is going on with you? What do you mean this is as far as it ever goes with you? Hal talk to me.” 

Hal just shakes his head. 

“You are far too good for me Doll, I’ll only drag you done. Go be with Olsen he’s perfect for you.”

You stare at him with hurt and anger. Hal just smiles small as he turns to walk towards General.

“I love you, Hal.” Hal stops as he flashes you look.

“You shouldn’t sweetheart.” He walks to General. Yous see the cherry red paint job, you were supposed to go for a ride. You watch as he doesn’t give you a second look as he drives off. 

Your eyes water as your heart cracks. 

Yup saying I love you was stupid.

You hoped Hal would come back, but he never did. You looked all shift for Hal. Your heart hurts. You close up as you keep hoping Hal would stroll in as he always did. But he never did.

You head out and feel sadness, No Hal to be with you as you walked home. Sure the town was safe but you loved walking with Hal, his jacket always drapped around you. You hurried home.

Being home felt odd, you spent so much at Hal’s place you hadn’t been home in ages. You look around as you slip out of your uniform and dig through to find something... Your hands stop on a big red paild shirt.

You hold it close as you slip it on. It still smelt like Hal. You crawl into your lonely bed. 

Maybe you could try calling Hal tomorrow. Maybe he’d listen... 

You wipe the stray tear away. 

You’d be sad over Hal yes, but you weren’t going to cry over him. 

If he truly didn’t want you anymore so be it.

Dark Days: The Forge #1

Sometimes when I see John Romita Jr. artwork, I think, "What did I ever have against Rob Liefeld?!"

Hawkman's final journal? Hooray! Go to hell, you stupid prick! And I thought these were going to be dark days!

Does anybody else find it weird that Carter Hall records his journal on Swiss cheese? Many years ago (I guess? There's no time stamp on the opening scene!), Carter Hall recorded the crashing of a spaceship on his lunch. But since he didn't know the word "spaceship," he wrote "sign written in metal." That will probably be important later but for now, it's time to move the story into the present. And where better to begin an adventure story than The Bermuda Triangle! Wait. I should rephrase that. "Where better to begin an adventure story in the 1970s than The Bermuda Triangle!" Oh boy! Eight year old me just came in his pants! I mean if that were possible. Nothing but pee would be coming out of there for at least another five years.

You know you can read and reread the data once you get somewhere safe? Or did you not save your data to the cloud? Idiot. You should use both terrestrial and cloud backups!

That scientist sounds like me in high school after first hearing Mr. Crowley: "There's something in the metal!" Batman rescues the scientist whose name is Dr. Madison (MADISOOOOOON!). Batman tells Dr. Madison that the only to safety is back through the volcano. Batman: "The only way out is in!" Dr. Madison: "Does that actually make sense? I don't think that makes sense." Batman: "If we don't go back through the lava, we'll be covered in lava!" Dr. Madison: "Do you ever listen to yourself speak?" Batman: "Outside will also have flying debris! Inside is just, um, you know! Liquid hotness!" Dr. Madison: "You mean lava?" Batman: "If you want to get technical about it! Now get in my Liquid Hotness Proof Bat-mech (trademark and action figure pending!), sit on my lap, and don't ask me if that's a bat-grapple in my pocket or if I'm happy to see you! I'm never happy!"

So they had to go back through the lava to get to the ocean? Batman does know Dr. Madison was standing in front of a window overlooking the water, right? How was just crashing through that not an option? Especially since Batman loves crashing through panes of glass!

Whenever an editor tells Scott Snyder to make something more exciting, he should just say, "Shut. Up!" Aquaman helps with the rescue and then he and Batman get into an argument about who's keeping bigger secrets. Batman probably wins that one because even if Aquaman had some really juicy secrets to tell, I'd never remain interested long enough to hear them. I'm already bored with this paragraph because I had to type "Aquaman" three times. Apparently the Blackhawks have some super secret covert black ops shit going on again. Remember how they returned in All Star Batman? Oh, you got tired of reading that series too? Well, believe me. They returned there. Meanwhile on Mogo, Cornelius the Guardian wants Hal to do something seedy to him.

"Don't tell Guy! I just got him to stop calling me gay!"

Oh sorry. His name is Ganthet. I must be thinking of Roddy McDowall's character from Scavenger Hunt. Speaking of Scavenger Hunt, I caught an episode of Family Ties the other day when some actor walked on and I was all, "Hey! That's short sleeves, checkered shirt, black sneakers!" Plus his son in the episode was Chunk from The Goonies. Should I mark irrelevant passages like these with asterisks?!

Ganthet having once asked Hal to jerk him off is now canon.

Once again, everybody in the universe is gossiping about how Earth is going to destroy the universe. If only the Justice League would stop saving it already! Just let somebody destroy Earth for the greater good, you hypocrites! Ganthet has pinpointed the threat to the universe in the Batcave so Hal Jordan decides to go invade it and not radio Batman saying, "Hey, buddy. I've got a possible issue that maybe you can help out with. Let's meet up in the Batcave." Instead he decides to sneak in and start going through Batman's things. I get it. It's the only way to ensure that a couple of heroes fight so all the fangenders can lose their shit over it. This part was probably Tynion's idea. "Hey! You know what I've read in comic books about five thousand times? That part where two heroes fight over a misunderstanding! Can we add that scene?!" And Scott Snyder snorts and wakes up and is all, "What? Whatever. Just write the script already! If I wanted to write it, I wouldn't have purchased you from your parents!" Anyway, Batman isn't home so Hal has to fight Meadowlark. You know, Not-Robin. Duke!

What is Duke reading to get his Green Lantern information? The Who's Who books from the mid-80s? That's where I get all of my information too!

Is Green Lantern just fucking with Duke or is there something about the yellow flaw that I don't know about? I thought it was completely gone. Is this Snyder and Tynion trying to backdoor the flaw back into the ring but only if the person using the ring is inexperienced and stupid? In the next panel, Hal Jordan says, "It's good to see Batman's still recruiting teenagers." Hey man. You better be careful with statements like that. At least he's not, you know, fucking them. Duke Thomas admits to not having a code name yet. That's adorable. All this fucking time and he still doesn't have one. Why can't Snyder just spit one out already? Waiting to find out his superhero name is like waiting for Sting to come in your mouth. Not that I'd know and not that it was the worst sixteen hours of my life. Meanwhile there's this place called The Campus underneath Philadelphia where The Immortal Men are headquartered. One of them is Immortal Man because of course it is. The other one is a guy in a robe with shaggy eyebrows that might be Carter Hall but I'm hoping is anybody else. Another one of their possible members would have been Elaine Thomas, Duke's mother. But she went crazy from Joker Toxin. They apparently know they need to save the world from something bad that's coming because it's always easier to tell a story about prophecy. It would be too hard to wedge these Immortal Men into the story if they didn't already know some huge Crisis was about to happen. So the guy in the robes isn't Hawkman because Hawkman gets the next scene. He's been having visions during the times between death and reincarnation. Whew! I thought he wouldn't have some secret inside information to get him right into this upcoming Crisis! In his vision, he sees a gigantic Batman statue with lots of people tied to its legs. I guess somebody is going to have to kill Batman before he becomes evil! After that scene, John Romita Jr. takes over on the art. I should probably snort some Ativan before continuing. Mister Terrific is helping Batman with the Mystery of the Dark Days. Hopefully they'll explain it in long, large word balloons that cover up most of the art. Something has been interfering with the harmonic frequencies of Earth-Main-Earth and Earth-2 (which I guess is back to its normal self? Or maybe Mister Terrific just got off before he wound up in that whole World's End mess? For some reason, I can't remember the story well enough to know if Mister Terrific was in any of it. Thank Jesus!) but neither Batman nor Mister Terrific know what's going on yet. To help them figure it out, Batman decides they must let Plastic Man out of his prison cell. They say they agreed to lock him up because he was too powerful but I think they just got sick of his stupid jokes. Back in the Batcave, Duke and Hal are investigating the Mystery of Batman Investigating the Mystery. It all started when somebody said, "That whole electrum in the tooth thing that resurrects the dead Talons is stupid! It's not scientific at all! Who comes up with such dumb shit?! DC Comics sucks!" Then Scott Snyder was all, "Wait! Wait! You haven't heard the whole tale of that! You shouldn't believe everything you see at first sight! You should wait for the second sight! Or maybe the third sight if everybody on Twitter complains about the second sight! But I don't think they will because this is going to be a huge Crisis! You'll love it!" So instead of electrum being in the teeth, Batman found a metal that shared the same energy signature as the helmet of fate, the quintdent of Aquaman, and the bracelets of Diana. To investigate this metallic mystery, Batman created a team that everybody forgot about. Everybody except me, of course!

Halo's costume is terrible. But Geoforce had better stay away from her anyway!

Duke has no idea who the wobbly speech bubble is. But that didn't stop him from saying, "Dick? Is that Dick? You know, Dick Grayson? Nightwing? Is that you?" So the metal is probably Nth Metal which would make it more believable that it was resurrecting the Talons. Because nobody is going to say, "Nth Metal can't do that!" I mean, they might. But they'd be wrong because Nth Metal isn't real and it can do whatever the fuck it needs to do when the writer needs it to do it. Although if it were Dionesium, nobody would say, "Dionesium can't do that!" Because that's exactly what it was made for! It's just that Nth Metal works better, plot-wise. Why would Aquaman's five-pronged trident have Dionesium in it? Deep in Batman's secret Batcave, Duke and Hal come to a door. Apparently the owner of the voice is behind it. I hope it's not The Joker. I hope it's Detective Chimp. I also hope it's revealed before this issue is over! Batman has also been keeping another secret in Superman's fortress. With the help of Mister Miracle, he unlocks the unopenable room it was stored in. It's a big yellow tower that Mister Miracle recognizes but I don't. Maybe it's Qwardian! It could also be something from Final Crisis which I've never read. Or something from an obscure 1967 Batman story. Or maybe it's something that, when it's explicitly named, I'll say, "Oh yeah. Fuck. I totally remember that thing now!" Anyway, I don't think it's important enough to reveal this issue. Because The Joker needs to be revealed in the Hal Jordan scene! Oh look! The Joker was the voice!
