Stuff I’ve had to deal with as a city librarian: special edition - how I got my cat

It has occurred to me that I never told you guys the story of how my cat Jesse came into my life, which is a shame, because it’s a goddamn ride.

So I work in a library, usually on an evening shift, which lasts from around 3 pm till we close. Around 5 pm, a patron named Matt comes up to the desk and informs me, very matter of factly, that there is a kitten right outside the front door. Did we maybe wanna do something about it? I followed Matt outside, and sure enough, pushed up right against the wall by the door, is this tiny, dirty kitten with an injured lip.

He was hissing and spitting as a stray kitten does, especially now that two giant Cthulhu-like monsters were hovering over him and making strange cooing noises. I was honestly expecting him to bolt right then, but he stayed put, I think to just keep hissing at us and giving us what for.

Naturally, my worry is that he will eventually bolt and get hit by a car, so I called animal control. Because every public service that is not mine in this town is utterly useless, they told me to call the police. Then when I called the police, they told me they’ve never done stuff with animals and I should call animal control. Insert obligatory acab.

So I called up my parents (who live about five minutes from the library) to see if they could run by my house and grab my cat carrier. No luck - they’re an hour away at a family thing. Then I remembered my coworker Amber, who lived right next door to the library and had two cats of her own. Surely, she had a carrier to spare.

All I had to do was say the word kitten, and she promised to be there in five minutes. Okay, perfect, Matt and I just had to hang out for a bit until she got there. So of course the kitten picked that exact opportunity to finally give into the “flight” part of his fight or flight response and run across the street.

Across the street from the library is a church, and there’s only one car in their whole lot, so of course that’s where the kitten runs. The first thing that came to my mind as I took off after him was “and for my next impression: Jesse Owens!” from Blazing Saddles.

As Matt and I dash across the street after him, I say, “As long as he doesn’t get into the car’s guts, we should be okay.” Guess what the kitten decided to do.

To avoid the owner of the car getting a very nasty surprise when they left, I told Matt to run inside and find whoever it belonged to, so we could have them pop the hood. I would stay outside and try to coax the kitten out. So I get down on my belly, pull out my phone flashlight, and start scanning.

Which is the scene a mother and her daughter biking by stumbled upon - a woman dressed in a polo and khakis, on her stomach on hot asphalt, her head halfway jammed under a Honda Accord, making kissy noises. Naturally, they asked me if I was okay. I explained the whole situation, and they were both adorably eager to help. The mother informed me they only lived a few houses down, and had some leftover salmon in their fridge. They could run home and get it to lure the kitten out. Excellent plan! Much appreciated! Btw, you guys want a cat? No, mom says, they already have two (although I could hear the daughter making an impassioned case for a third as they left on their mission).

As they biked off and I stuck my head back under the car, Amber came out of her house and spotted me. I heard her laughing before I ever saw her. I filled her in on the situation, and instructed her to put the carrier up by the hood, standing up with the door open. Then she got down on the ground on the other side of the car and started pspspsping with me.

Right after Amber settled in, Matt returned with the pastor of the church. I scrambled to my feet and hurriedly explained the situation to him - we needed to find the owner of this car, because a kitten had crawled up into it and they needed to pop the hood so we could see where he was. The pastor told us the car belonged to his secretary, and was just inside. As he left to find her, I asked if he wanted a kitten. He told me his daughters would love one, but alas, he’s allergic. Understandable! Thank you, sir!

As I filled Matt in on what he’d missed, the pastor returned with a tiny, elderly lady - his secretary and owner of this kitten vessel. I explained the situation once more - kitten in car, please pop hood. She sat down in the driver’s seat, and everyone took their places - Matt and the pastor at the front of the car, Amber still on the ground in case the noise spooked the kitten, and me at the driver’s side, because the first thing this dear old lady asked me was this - “which button pops the hood?”

I showed her, up goes the hood...and sitting right there, on the goddamn engine block of this fucking car, is the kitten. He starts to move, but the pastor - in a flash of unthinking kindness - shot out his arms and grabbed the kitten firmly around his middle. Matt grabs the carrier, and the pastor plunks the kitten inside, closing and locking the door. 

Which is exactly when the mother and daughter returned with the salmon.

Everyone exhales, and thanks go around - to the pastor for grabbing him (and a plea for him to go wash his hands as soon as possible), his secretary for learning a new feature on her car today, the mother and daughter for the salmon (which I take because obviously you gotta feed the little bastard), to Amber for the carrier, and to Matt for bringing this whole thing to my attention in the first place. Everyone heads back, and I waltz back into work with a kitten in a carrier.

He hung out in the work room until closing, after which I took him home, only intending to keep him till I found him a permanent owner. And here I sit, Boo Boo the fool, with this now four year old cat who is very loud and wiggly and hides whenever my dad visits and is wearing a certain pair of shoes.

Because that’s just how my life goes.

Tempawan felt cold again, but by now she had enough experience that she was sure that her skin was hot to the touch. Sweat glistened on every inch of her exposed skin. Her pores were working overtime to mix with the moisture coming off of whoever the man in front of her was.

"I'm going for some fresh air."

She nodded. The man leaned in, speaking through her hair.

"Come with me."

She smiled and let him lead her to the poorly lit patio. There were a few others outside, which seemed to throw a wrench into his plans. The heat from inside began to ebb as he made small talk. When he asked Tempawan what she did for work, she decided to take the lead.

"Why don't you ask me something you actually want to know?"

Had she always been so bold? Not that she could remember. Not before the last month or so. She felt like her sister’s words earlier that day had opened her eyes a bit. She hadn’t exactly been holding back from her extracurriculars recently, but she decided that she needed to up her participation if she was going to push Bin out of her mind.

As it was, his only option was to watch.

Her lips found the line of veins and arteries in his neck. He closed his eyes and tilted his head back. Changbin could feel the arousal pouring off of her, completely convinced he could smell it in the trees and damp earth of her smell that wafted from across the club. It was pumping through his veins. He dug the tin of pills out and popped two into his mouth.

"It's fine,” she shook her head, “you said seventeen?"

She popped the last word out. Seungmin felt unsettled. Was she... no... she couldn't be flirting with me. He shook his head, pushing the thought away.
