Bleak, depressing, and annoying. Those were the first words that came into my mind as I crawl and scratch through the pages. . I found the first two hundred pages of this book quite difficult to read. Maybe because I was expecting it to focus on gay romance rather than the story of the twins themselves; or probably because I felt the bottled up emotions of the protagonists of the story and I hated each of their emotions as they came pouring out to me. . To begin with, I cannot find the words to describe how I feel about this book. I mean, Michael Thomas Ford’s “Last Summer” is the very first adult M/M Romance book I have ever enjoyed reading when I was a teenager, but I don’t know what to feel with this one. . This book is a roller coaster of highs and lows, but of the latter mostly. It tackles transphobia, gender expression and exploration, and personal identity. There was a little sprinkle of romance but not before near the end of the book. . Perhaps I expected this to focus more on the romance and fantasy part because both the title and synopsis is saying so; or perhaps I expected to feel the same emotions I felt whilst reading “Last Summer”; or perhaps I expected exciting and sparkling-like magick like in “Harry Potter” or a more mature kind of magick like in “The Magicians”; or perhaps I expected too much of this book . Okay, here’s the thing: I am not that much of a sports fan myself. I mean, I could enjoy watching a game of ball from time-to-time- but only for an entire quarter; that’s it. . When I started reading this book, I didn’t expect it to focus heavily on soccer, so I was slow on reading this piece of literature because I wanted to digest and picture in my head what was happening. . Despite that, I liked how the story went. There’s definitely some character development in the story, and the emotions are easily felt as you go through the pages. I guess this would be the first time that I would be reviewing a graphic novel, and I can’t help it because the story and illustrations are too darn cute! . This is about two boys (or young adults) who met in a small town beside a beach. One is taking a leave from culinary school because of family issues, and the other has just graduated high school and doesn’t know what to do with life other than to try escaping their small town. . They met in the struggling family bakeshop of one of the boys, and their relationship started to take root from there. I had a lot of fun reading this book (which I have finished reading a few days ago)! . This is so packed with steamy scenes that it reminded me of one M/M Romance series. As a matter of fact, when the author of that series asked for any fun books to read, I suggested for them to read this one as I’m having fun with it. Lo and behold! A few minutes later, the author of this book replied to my comment saying that he is, in fact, a fan of the series as well. . This book feels like a love child of the sci-fi and the gay romance genres as it’s about two spies who are competing for the attention (and potential romantic partner) of a girl. Apparently, things won’t go as planned as they slowly try to get each other’s attention instead. . I am back on reading books! . So, since it’s prom season here in British Columbia and I haven’t opened a single book for weeks (with the exception of a few graphic novels), I have decided to pursue reading this one. Boy, do I slightly regret it. . As always, I try my best to get past 50-100 pages before I could say that it would be all worth it in the end. However, that was not the case on this one, and since I am not really one to give up easily, I forced myself to keep on reading through the pages. . I went through the usual motion of getting to know the main characters and their support characters in the first few pages. There was no description of them on those pages so I simply gave the benefit of the doubt that I would perhaps get to know them more as the story progresses. That was not actually the case. . To tell the truth, it was not in the last 50 pages that everything got interesting. Most of the characters were not given any depth at all, and the romance between the two main characters of the book wasn’t given an extra oomph, the giddiness that I always look forward to in an M/M Romance book. . Boy, what a busy week we’ve had, and because of that, I almost didn’t have that much time to continue reading this book at night. . The story of the Effigies continues in this book. This time around, secrets are slowly revealed and the protagonists cannot trust the organization they’re working for, even each other. . Full of puzzles, mystery, and betrayal, this book is a must-read for lovers of magical girls. . P.S. People are saying that this series feels like Sailor Moon meets Pacific Rim, but for me, it feels like the love child of W.I.T.C.H., Power Rangers, and Hunger Games. I cannot put this book down. Heck, I even tried fighting my sleepiness during my transit rides just to keep on reading this one. . It’s either because of how refreshing the way the story was written or I am simply amazed that the author has a Ph.D. in English, but either way, I was sucked into the world of the Effigies and the phantoms they fight and kill and mysteries they solve. . Unlike the other stories where people get their supernatural or elemental abilities because of genes, the protagonists in this series got theirs because they were randomly chosen by their predecessors—including the memories that they and their predecessors have. It’s like the Avatar meets the Hunger Games. . I have a love-hate kind of relationship with this book, and here are the reasons: . I hate this book because it starts out as a light read. It makes one feel high with giddiness and curiosity, but next thing you know, you are being thrown with boulders as big as a two-story house just to bring you down from the sky. . Which brings us to the reason I love this literary piece: because it made me feel those things. . Beautiful, heartbreaking, and poignant. Those are the three words that would best describe this novel as it tackles both the horrifying process of conversion therapy and the experiences of LGBTQ+ kids who never got the support when they needed it the most. . I think this is the first time that I have read a novella, and boy am I glad that I did. . We are given a glimpse of what happened to Monty and Perce after they have decided to elope with each other. . She was pushed through her mind’s limits which lead to her almost having a mental breakdown. . It’s my first vict—I mean, read of 2020! . I have been seeing this book on the shelves of bookstores for years, and I just ignore it because it doesn’t seem to be my cup of tea. I then saw this series again last year and I have finally decided to grab them from the shelf—after looking at the reviews and finding out that there’s a gay romance within this universe, of course. Boy, am I glad that I took them. . Honestly speaking, it has been a long time since I have enjoyed a book that has heterosexual romance within its pages, with the “Red Queen” series as the last one. I guess it’s because the story was being told from the perspective of the female protagonist. . Moreover, this story has just the right amount of everything: adventure, mystery, romance, comedy, and thrill. It definitely makes one wonder what would happen next right after the last scene ends. It is so good that I sometimes forget to update my reading progress on the @goodreads app. . This is a must-read for readers of Y.A.
