Louise Verneuil for Beware Magazine back in 2019
(2019)
interview here
What was happening in your mind when your first EP was still just a blank sheet?
Louise Verneuil: I needed to write to externalise things that did not come out at first orally. I am an extroverted person, extravagant but with flaws, which I had to express. I wrote poems, unconfessed or even unfinished things that turned into pieces. I needed to affirm my femininity, to unlock this sensuality that now advances my compositions. I can't write in a form of pressure, it's above all spontaneity, a certain catharsis.
How did you fall in love with melodies and words?
Louise Verneuil: Words are not recent since I have been writing poems since I was a child. I have always admired this literary culture present around Francophone or even Anglophone music. I had a free education, my parents let me search, discover these universes on the shelves. I had great composers at my fingertips, such as Gainsbourg, Françoise Hardy, Bashung, or Reggiani. I felt able to write or at least want to do it. Regarding the melody, my father was an amateur guitarist, all family meals ended in whirlwinds of sounds. When I'm singing, I feel like I'm connected to my entourage, it's a form of connection. The reason why I perceive the interpretation as a naked one is that I constantly carry these memories with me.
Your pieces are poetic. Where does this exacerbated sensitivity come from?
Louise Verneuil: It seems to me that I have always been a hypersensitive person. I am moved by everything around me, I sometimes find myself crying for unexplained reasons. This sensitivity helps me feel alive. I tried to hide it, to contain it for several people but I did not feel fulfilled. It is a part of my personality that I now assume, it allows self-affirmation but above all personal fulfilment. To be authentic whether in my texts, in my music, this sensitivity is necessary.
Your sounds are sweet, your words are sharp. Do you see your first EP as a duality between hatred and love?
Louise Verneuil: The first duality is found in the notion of woman-child. Become a woman while preserving your memories, this freshness of mind. Duality is also found in loving and hating. I titled my first album "Lumière noire(black light)" for all these confrontations, these introspections. Find light in the dark, find love in sadness, find hope in despair. I try to bypass these disappointments to perceive only the positive. I touch wood. Everywhere.
What is the feeling you wanted to express through "Desert"?
Louise Verneuil: "Desert" is the story of a person who leaves overnight, leaving you in a deep misunderstanding. The elusive side of love moments helped me compose, it's 6 years of my life. At first, I felt a form of shyness at the idea of interpreting these words on stage that are very carnal. I had to do it, we lack feminist authors and female sensuality nowadays.
The cinematographic dimension is present in your musical universe. Do you build your pieces like short films?
Louise Verneuil: I constantly compose by imagining things. When I use words, colours, smells or even flowers cross my mind which puts an aura around music. I like to bring texts to stories, lived or not lived elsewhere. When I arrived at the studio, I said to Samy Osta "I want it to be silk, like falling rose petals" in other words strangely. I like it to be organic.
How did the shooting of "Desert" go?
Louise Verneuil: All the sequences are shot in analogue, everything is old-fashioned, we could not anticipate the rendering. We didn't know what was happening in real time behind the screen, or what we were going to perceive, in other words, it was risk-taking. "Desert" is a summary of my life in recent months, everything had to be authentic, in music as in images. I wanted to propose a form of onirism, a mixture between dream and reality. I didn't write a script, I was thinking above all of an atmosphere, a mood. In the video, I suddenly disappear but we still don't understand how this effect occurred. I love these accidents.
Which female artist is closest to this timelessness to which you are tending?
Louise Verneuil: I am inspired by several female artists, such as Nico, whom I constantly quote. She made an album with the Velvets, she brought an instrument on stage from nowhere that she kept throughout her career. Patti Smith, who lived with Mapplethorpe, was not content with being a muse, she took photos, she wrote poems, books. I admire these people who do not stay in a specific box but who feed on everything. It's a way to discover ourselves, it's a potential that we can all have and exploit.
What did you have to do with the scene?
Louise Verneuil: I try to tame it every day, alone at first. I only went on stage alone 5 times, I didn't think I would be able to present these intimate words. Finally, you simply have to get started. I am not looking for the perfection of a performance or a piece but imperfection, sensation and sensitivity. I sing my experience, my feelings and if people manage to connect with it, I would be delighted.
What is your next musical challenge?
Louise Verneuil: I don't compose every day, so it would be to get back to writing. I often meet musicians who tell me to work constantly, unfortunately I do not work in this way but by "creative epiphanies". When a strong emotion occurs, I will feel the need to put words on it. I would like to bring people to other stories, other themes by not feeling slowed down. Things are already burning my fingers!

Character Designer Issue 1 (2003) Guilty Gear concept art + Daisuke commentary
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Theres a nice amount of undocumented stuff! A few of these have been shown off elsewhere, but theyre still pretty obscure. Some of the sketches have fun things like beta character names (i enjoy “frederick mercurius” for sol and “blackmore” for testament.) and little notes that are… mostly illegible, but theres still a ton of commentary here. Also includes an interview with daisuke.

My new story "From the Journals of Dr. Arthur Sweetly" is now available to read in issue 4 of Reader Beware for pay-what-you-want on itch.io. In this epistolary story, a Victorian surgeon with an interest in Spiritualism documents his experiments in which he seeks to prove the rumored distance communication method of sympathetic writing. Content warnings apply for mild gore and death.
Something especially exciting about this issue is that my wife Corinne @synonymsfordismember has a story in here as well! Her story "Born Sexy Tomorrow" is a stomach-turning work of art, and I'm so delighted to see it in print alongside my own work. Content warnings apply for heavy gore and cannibalism.
I hope you'll consider picking up a copy of the magazine to check out mine and Corinne's stories, along with all the other awesome pieces included in this issue. Thank you very much to the editors of @readerbewaremag for including my work in their wonderful publication.

Reader Beware Magazine Subs Opening Soon!
My horror magazine, READER BEWARE, is going to have an Issue 4 out this fall, and we're gonna need some poems, comics and stories to fill it! Here's the update on the submission call:
Submissions will be open May 1-15, though they may be extended if we feel we haven't filled out the magazine yet. Pay has stayed the same for short stories at $.01/word, BUT we do have some changes to our other rates for the better!
POETRY: Poets will now be paid a flat rate of $20 on top of the $.05/line. We realized while paying our poets for last issue if we just stuck to the $.05/line rule, we'd end up paying most of our lovely artists less than a dollar, and we wanted to fix that.
COMICS: We've shortened our max length for comics to 5 pages so that we can give artists $10/page. This is far behind professional standards, but it's the best we can do at the moment with our limited budget. We are also taking submissions for comics as scripts with art samples/sketches this year! You will then finish your comic during magazine production. This is to bring our comic publishing more in line with what we've seen comic-focused publishers do, and to limit the amount of work you'd do for us on spec.
Our site has been updated to reflect these changes, and with more submission guidelines based on our reading experiences last year.
If you're interested, keep an eye on our website, check out our twitter/tumblr @readerbewaremag
