She was a Black Panther. She is a lifelong racial and social justice activist. She made space for underrepresented voices as a park ranger. She is an incredible singer. She was honored by Barack Obama in 2015. Spotlight- Hero of the Great Outdoors- Betty Reid Soskin:

Betty Reid Soskin, who will be 96 in September of 2017, is the nation’s oldest full-time Park Ranger. Great-granddaughter of a slave, and a file clerk in a Jim Crow segregated union auxiliary— Boilermakers Auxiliary 36—during World War II, Betty Reid Soskin has witnessed so much of American history — slavery, reconstruction, World War I, Great Depression, World War II, Martin Luther King Jr., assassinations of the Kennedys, Vietnam, the Moon Landing, the Mars Probe, Sept. 11, Iraq, Iran, and on Jan. 20, 2009,  witnessed the inauguration of our first African American president in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial, a memorial for a president whose life was contemporary with her great-grandmother's.

Soskin has been leading educational tours, to both children and adults, since she was 85 years old, explaining her slice of history 25 hours a week at the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.

Though not a trained historian, and not a member of the migrant labor force at the time, Soskin is still able to tell the story of African American workers, from the perspective of her life during that period. Like many of our other Heroes, she sees parks like hers as places to connect national parks to people who may not otherwise be able to get to remote areas like Yosemite or Yellowstone.

Soskin is also the producer of "Of Lost Conversations and Untold Stories," a DVD that is now on YouTube. She wrote and narrated it to start conversations at public meetings for the National Park Service (NPS).

In June of 2016, Betty Reid Soskin was beaten and robbed in her Richmond, CA home. True to her spirit, she returned to work just 3 weeks after the attack.

Well a camping event has to have a campfire and songs. We’re going to introduce to some and remind others about the great black folk and bluegrass songwriter, simians guitarist Elizabeth Cotten. Two of her most famous songs are Freight Train and Shake Sugaree. Of course we’ll sing a few familiar #girlscout songs and traditional Gullah praise-house songs too. Did you know as a left handed , Elizabeth Cotten played right handed and upside down? “Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten was an American blues and folk musician, singer, and songwriter. A self-taught left-handed guitarist, Cotten developed her own original style. She played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down, as she was left-handed.” Betty Reid Soskin was also a songwriter so in addition to discussing her book we will celebrate her songs. Here is someone everyone should know about ... This is Gorgeous 94 year old #BettyReidSoskin our nation's oldest park ranger. She returned to work Tuesday after being beaten and robbed in her home last month. They didn't catch the guy but I sure hope they do soon!!
