Week 2- Let’s Get Back on the Horse!

As promised, our lesson will be on teasers and parlays. First, what is a parlay? The easiest way for me to describe a parlay is essentially connected bets where you let your winnings ride. Every single part of the bet needs to win for the bet to win. The risk is much greater, but the bets are smaller and the payoff is greater. Say for example, you really think the patriots and the ravens will win their games. For argument’s sake, you bet 5 dollars on the patriots at even money. If they win, you essentially now have a $10 bet on the ravens.  If they win their game (let’s say even money again), then you have a $20 winning ticket. Not bad to win $15 dollar while only putting 5 at risk. Now imagine betting 2 dollars on an 8 game parlay (assume roughly 1:1). 4-8-16-32-64-128-256-512. A $510 profit from a $2 bet! Most recreational bettors love parlays because you can bet a little to win a lot. I don’t recommend anything over a 4 team parlay. It is just too tough to hit a huge parlay, but the payout is extremely nice if you do.

Now the teaser. It is very similar to a parlay in that is a connected bet in which all legs need to win. The beauty of the teaser is you get to move the line in your favor, but you won’t get paid near as much as in a parlay. Let’s say that the 49ers and the Packers are each favored by 6 points, and you feel very confident that both teams will win their games. It is possible that both teams will win their games, but fail to cover the spread. Enter: the teaser. They get their name from their very nature. The teaser “teases” the bettor to make a bet by moving the spread (or total) usually 6 to 7 points in their favor. All of a sudden the 49ers and the Packers are now available at a Pick’em instead of 6 point favorites. Looks much more appealing than the original lines. How is the house able to offer such a bet? They change the payouts. Usually a 2-team 6-point teaser pays the same as picking one regular game. A 3 team teaser pays about +160 or so. Not nearly as much as a parlay on those teams would.

A few words of advice on teasers and parlays. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you think you will be able to nail a huge parlay, 99.9999% chance that you are wrong. A huge portion of a sportsbook’s revenue comes from small bets on large parlays. When dealing with teasers, look to move through key numbers like 3 and 7 that the score often falls on. There is a good deal of value that comes from teasing a 7.5 point favorite down to a 1.5 point favorite. There is significantly less value in taking a 13.5 point favorite down to 7.5. If a team wins by at least 8 points, there is a good chance they will cover a 13.5 point spread as well, but a team that wins by at least 2 points may not win by 8. I have seen stats that say as many as 15-20% of all games end up with a 3 point margin of victory in the NFL. Be sure to shop around for teasers and parlays as not all sportsbooks pay exactly the same odds. Get the best value you possibly can!

Now for my Week 2 picks.

2* Oakland Raiders (-3) over Miami Dolphins – Yes this is the “square” play. Yes Oakland is on a short week. Yes they are traveling east for a 1 o’clock game. That made me downgrade this from a 3* to a 2* play. I think everything else points in Oakland’s favor. Miami has a week home field advtange, a rookie QB that looked terrible in week 1, and a significant lack of playmakers. I see a lot of Darren McFadden in this game, and I hope Oakland can cut down on their penalties. Miami will not win this game, the only downside on this bet is if Oakland finds a way to shoot itself in the foot and lose it.

1* Seattle Seahawks (+3) over Dallas Cowboys – Here it is. My theory about the trap 4 o’clock game with a public team only giving a few points in what looks like an easy game. I missed it with the 49ers last week, but this week I’m onto them. The Seahawks are very good at home, and this line is inflated due to Dallas’ win and Seattle’s loss. I’ll take the points and sweat this one out with the “sharps.”

½* Plays Buffalo (-3), Baltimore (+3), New Orleans (-3), and San Francisco (-7)

Let’s also do 2 1*6.5 point teasers Oakland and New Orelans and Oakland, New Orleans, and San Francisco. That should try to take advantage of teasing through key numbers like 3 and 7.
