Time for another Q&A meme. I was tagged by @steggyisimmortal AND @beautifulwhensarcastic!
Dogs or cats? Don’t make me choose, that’s evil. (I have a cat currently, though, and she is AMAZING.)
YouTube celebrities or normal celebrities? I cannot stress how little YouTube I watch. So, normal celebrities, which is an oxymoron if ever I heard one.
If you could choose to live anywhere, where would it be? You know that B plot in an Office episode where Pam and Jim sort of fight their way into dreaming up their perfect fantasy house? Yeah my 4-bedroom, 2.5 bath farmhouse with a finished attic writing nook and a woodshop in the back on 3-5 bucolic acres including a small orchard, a 15 minute walk into the heart of town where the library is, 30 minutes via public transit from NYC, 15 minutes by car from my job and also only 2 hours from my family? Does not exist. Where I live now is not so bad, though.
Disney or Dreamworks? Disney
Favourite childhood TV show? Ghostwriter. I think because you never knew when it was gonna air, so there was a special element of the thrill of the chase.
The movie you’re looking forward to in 2020? What movies are even still coming out this year? I will be excited to see Wonder Woman and Black Widow when they get released, whenever that is.
Favourite book you read in 2019? That was a good year for books for me! I read Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston and then read it two more times for the feeeeeeeels. But also Tana French’s The Witch Elm was so well-crafted and launched me into reading the rest of her Dublin Murder Squad series. And I read Educated in 2019, and was so enthralled by Tara Westover’s harrowing account of her life I finished it in one day.
Marvel or DC? Marvel
If you chose Marvel, favourite member of the X-Men? I grew up watching the cartoon and back then it was Gambit. (We shall not speak of Taylor Kitsch here.)
Night or day? Day. I’m tired at night.
Favorite Pokémon? Sorry, I’m too old for this question. My friend plays that app game and Bulbasaur seems cute though?
Top 5 bands/artists? Tegan & Sara, Brandi Carlile, Janelle Monaé, Beyonce, Sara Bareilles
Top 10 books? In no particular order:
Life After Life, Kate Atkinson
One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez
Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
I Know This Much is True, Wally Lamb
Bird By Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, Anne Lamott
Atonement, Ian McEwan
The Trumpet of the Swan, E. B. White
The House of the Spirits, Isabel Allende
The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood
The Duchess Deal, Tessa Dare
Top 4 movies? In no particular order:
Star Wars
The Birdcage
Zodiac
Singin’ in the Rain
US or Europe? Huh?
Tumblr or Twitter? Tumblr
Favourite vacation destination? I would go back to Florence in a heartbeat.
Favourite YouTuber? No, really, I don’t watch YouTube like that. Is Anna Arkana still making videos? She did fun stuff.
Favourite author? I’ll buy anything Tessa Dare publishes. Every Margaret Atwood I’ve read has challenged me in a new way. Nora Ephron’s writing is so damn human but also it’s perfect?
Tea or coffee? Coffee
OTP? Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers (I mean, I have a list of a dozen or more but Steggy is the main reason this blog exists, so.)
Do you play an instrument or sing? I can carry a tune.
Tagging: @roboticonography @geekynerddemon @plumandfinch @teaandatale @indiefic @beth-is-rainpaint

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM MY DEATH BED
If by any chance my dear reader should ever fall gravely ill, so ill that seeking refuge in mindless entertainment is the only way to keep a mind off the excruciating pain being experienced, then you will soon find relief. I was there, somewhat still am and would like to report back with recommendations. So, what to gape at to make you feel better? My recommendations will be broken down into three categories, each next more immediately gratifying than the previous one.
A. YOU ARE TRYING TO MAINTAIN YOUR INTELLECT’S SUPERIORITY OVER YOUR BODY. YOU WANT TO USE YOUR TIME IN SICKBED WISELY. YOU WOULD DESCRIBE YOUR DAY AS “NOT TOO BAD!”
I finished three books during that time. Firstly, I unfortunately got to the end of The David Foster Wallace Reader, a 950-page hardcover tombstone that included sections of his novels, many of his short stories, some of his teaching materials and comments after texts written by his colleagues, fans from academia and book critics. I was elated to discover so much more of his brilliance, humor, restlessly detail-oriented and complex mind. I’ve written about him here as well.
Secondly, short, but harsh and violently beautiful: Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. A love story between two men was too progressive for the American audience (his publisher in the US actually asked him to burn the manuscript) and thus it was first published in Europe instead.
Giovanni had awakened an itch, had released a gnaw in me. I realized it one afternoon, when I was taking him to work via the Boulevard Montparnasse. We had bought a kilo of cherries and we were eating them as we walked along. We were both insufferably childish and high-spirited that afternoon and the spectacle we presented, two grown men jostling each other on the wide sidewalk and aiming the cherry pits, as though they were spitballs, into each other's faces, must have been outrageous. And I realized that such childishness was fantastic at my age and the happiness out of which it sprang yet more so; for that moment I really loved Giovanni, who had never seemed more beautiful than he was that afternoon.
Popova from Brain Pickings wrote a beautiful article about Baldwin’s motivation and thoughts about the novel - you can find it here.
Lastly, I finished a short story collection by Gabriel García Márquez titled The Sea of Lost Time. Poetic, haunting, mythical. There seems to be something that the Colombian and Estonian sensibilities share.
B. YOU ARE SLOWLY SLIPPING UNDER AND NEED DISTRACTION. READING HURTS. TV-SHOWS DON’T, BUT CONSOLE. YOU HAVE REASONED WITH YOURSELF THAT YOU NEED SOME TIME OFF. “A SHITTY MORNING, A DIFFICULT DAY, A RESTLESS EVENING AND A SLEEPLESS NIGHT.”
If beautiful visuals and heartwarming combinations of marine life, combined with David Attenborough’s awesome commentary is your cup of tea, look no further: The Blue Planet is pure ecologist jack-off material. 8 episodes, 50 minutes each, it’s your perfect second-day pain killer. And there’s no such thing as overdose.
Dear White People, a Netflix original show blew. My. Mind. Following life on the campus of an Ivy League college, the show portrays the process of fighting against everyday racism. But with such humour, poise, sharpness. Go binge watch yourself dead. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
On Friday, I was invited to a Twin Peaks viewing party. I was sceptical at first about adding another show to my stack, but as I had convinced myself about the necessity to partake in some social interaction, I set off to Beth’s. The show is centered around a murder mystery taking place in a small town called Twin Peaks. The characters and their entanglement is unexpected and queer. There’s humor in there one can characterize as dorky and weird. It’s creepy and will crawl right under your skin. PS: anticipate 80′s.
C. YOU’RE HALF-CONSCIOUS, HALF-ASLEEP. YOU ARE WONDERING IF THE PILLS WILL EVER WORK. YOU’VE BEEN WRITHING AROUND IN YOUR BED FOR AN HOUR AND NEED DISTRACTION, BUT DON’T WANT TO COMMIT. “I’M DECOMPOSING, AND YOU?”
I didn’t want to pick up a book this morning and figured - hey, I have a supercomputer right next to me, why not use it to its fullest? So, I did what anyone enlightened with such thoughts would have done and decided to go troll the app store for some awesome new games. To my great and continuing delight, I discovered Virtual Beggar, an Ayn-Randian role playing game where the player’s goal is to build a billion-dollar business from the money they get from begging. Not only am I hooked to the business I’m setting up, but to the fabulous puns and ridiculousness of the progress.
Some moments, however, must pass with your eyes shut and podcasts are really good background for your plight. My hottest new find is S-Town, short for Shit Town, a podcast from the makers of This American Life, following the investigation of a supposed murder that took place in a small town in Alabama. The podcast quickly turns into a more complex exploration of the life of a bizarre depressed clockmaker, who first contacted the producers. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts from.

Mexico’s New Beginning
Mary Beth Sheridan and Kevin Sieff, Washington Post, Dec. 3, 2018
Vowing to launch a “profound and radical” transformation of Mexico and improve the lives of the poor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador was sworn in as president on Saturday, opening an uncertain era in a country with deep economic and security ties with the United States.
López Obrador, known by his initials AMLO, might become the most powerful Mexican president in decades. Not only did he win 53 percent of the vote in a three-way race, but his party cinched a majority in both houses of Congress and gained control of numerous state legislatures. “Today, we begin a change of our political regime,” López Obrador said in an address to the nation.
López Obrador is the first leftist president since Mexico transitioned from a one-party authoritarian state to a full democracy in 2000. The election of a leftist “is a historic, very important change for Mexico, and it’s very healthy in a country with the grotesque inequalities that we have,” said Jesús Silva-Herzog Márquez, a prominent political scientist who teaches at the Tecnologico de Monterrey University.
But he and other Mexicans are unsure whether López Obrador will govern as a practical-minded centrist--as he did as mayor of Mexico City from 2000 to 2005--or an autocratic populist. While there are moderate, U.S.-educated academics in the new cabinet, analysts say power has shifted from the technocrats who have steered Mexican financial policy for decades.
In his inauguration speech, López Obrador attacked the free-market, pro-trade policies that Mexican governments have followed since the 1980s as a “disaster,” saying they had resulted in tepid growth, rising income inequality and the migration of impoverished workers. But he has also sought to reassure investors, saying he will respect the independence of the central bank and not expropriate land.
“There’s just a lot of uncertainty,” said Alfredo Coutiño, director for Latin America at Moody’s Analytics.
There were also some sharp breaks from tradition. López Obrador was driven to his inauguration in his simple white Volkswagen Jetta; across town, the Mexican White House and its gardens were thrown open to the public as a newly established park. López Obrador has given up the residence and plans to sell the presidential jet and travel commercially.
“I feel like I’m dreaming,” said Braulio Melquiades, who visited the presidential estate on Saturday. “We are poor people staring at these beautiful things for the first time.”
