The Queen always wins: The Queen's Gambit (2020) and women empowerment

Arguably one of the best miniseries Netflix has ever produced with insanely high ratings on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, The Queen’s Gambit directed by the director Scott Frank soonly became trending after making its debut in 2020. The miniseries was based on the novel with the same name written in 1983 by Walter Tevis. It follows the story of the genius girl, Beth Harmon (played by the wildly talented Anya Taylor-Joy), who rises from playing chess in the basement with a janitor to become the world champion chess player. She becomes the U.S’ pride after defeating the Soviets in the game - an intellectual sport they are famed for, during the Cold War era. Walter Tevis actually wrote Elizabeth Harmon based on his own passionate experiences in playing chess but with a female character. The writer wants to honor women’s intelligence at the time in the U.S and also promotes an advocative message about feminism and women’s empowerment. 

Beth Harmon is a very good example of a woman competing in a man's world; she becomes a feminist icon with her success in chess and her story. Beth has all the qualities of a strong woman: she’s independent, self reliant, smart and decisive. When she moves to her new home with her new parents, we can see that Beth takes care of her new mother very well since her new mother gets sick frequently. She’s also very proactive and usually makes decisions by herself, like how she wants to compete at the Kentucky State’s tournament and asks Mr. Shaibel to finance her when her mother turns her down. Taking Russian class is also her decision to compete with Soviet’s player in the future. Beth makes lots of money playing chess and after her new father has left, she becomes the breadwinner of the family and takes care of her mother and also pays her mother fifteen percent of her income to act as her representative. Besides being decisive and proactive, Beth is also a hard-worker: she’s very committed to chess and practices chess all the time. Every time she loses, she still has the ability to bounce back and thus making her a very resilient woman. Her most painful loss is against Vasily Borgov (played by Marcin Dorociński, a Soviet champion title holder) in Paris. It’s her second time losing to Borgov and it definitely hits her hard, which makes Beth plummet into alcohol and smoking addiction until her best friend from Methuen, Jolene, comes over. In the end, she is still able to defeat Borgov and becomes the new face for women in the U.S and Soviet at the time. 

Throughout the beginning of Beth’s chess career, she is treated with contempt and underestimated because of her gender and youth. For example, when she starts living with her new mother, her mother suggests she do some activities that are more feminine and suitable for her, not chess. Second time she is treated with contempt and underestimation is when she plays against Harry Beltik (played by the beloved Harry Melling) in the final. Harry comes to the game late and keeps yawning, distracting Beth but at the end she wins the match and the victory leaves a sour taste in Harry’s mouth. Beth’s technique also really reflects her personality: she usually plays with the Sicilian opening, a style through which the player attacks his/her opponent rapidly and thus secures victory almost instantly. Such a technique can be demonstrative of a woman's strength in the series. 

One thing I like about the movie is that it doesn’t nerf the men to make the women shine, the men in the movie appear very elegant and polite. They respect Beth as a representative of their country competing against the Soviets and help her throughout the series. They compliment and admire Beth even right after they defeat them. But this can be a mistake from the producers because it is not very realistic. At that point of time, is that how men really react to a woman that beats them in a sport that they are supposed to be better at? 

Overall, this miniseries is still a very worth watching series for its cinematography, music as they  are all perfect to support the story and the message that Scott Frank and Walter Tevis want to deliver. The cast’s acting in this series is also on point, shout out to Anya Taylor-Joy for her great performance and I believe this is Anya’s best on screen performance yet, can’t imagine anyone else playing Elizabeth Harmon better than Anya Taylor-Joy.

Netflix’s Anya Taylor-Joy starrer series The Queen’s Gambit, which was poised to win big at this weekend’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, has now been involved a legal suit. Barrier-breaking Soviet chess icon Nona Gaprindashvili has sued the streaming platform for $5 million in a defamation lawsuit over a dialogue.

In the End Game finale of the limited series, Gaprindashviliis perturbed specifically by the incorrect statement that compares her real-life accomplishments to that of the Taylor-Joy’s fictional Beth Harmon. The scene follows when Harmon plays in a white-knuckle match in Moscow, a commentator says, “The only unusual thing about her, really, is her sex, and even that’s not unique in Russia.There’s Nona Gaprindashvili, but she’s the female world champion and has never faced men.”

According to Deadline, the defamation suit counters the statement in the casefiled in federal court by California lawyers. As pointed out, “Gaprindashvili is a pioneer of women’s chess and a much-loved icon in her native country of Georgia. Throughout her extraordinary career, she won many championships, beat some of the best male chess players in the world, and was the first woman in history to achieve the status of international chess grandmaster among men.”

The Queen’s Gambit is based on Walter Tevi’s 1983 novel which follows Beth Harmon (Taylor-Joy), a young girl abandoned to a Kentucky orphanage in the late 1950s who discovers an astonishing talent for chess while battling addiction and the struggles that come with the true gift of genius. The series proved to be a global sensation, having won a leading nine trophies at the Creative Emmys last weekend.

Gaprindashvili’s 25-page complaint adds, “The allegation that Gaprindashvili ‘has never faced men’ is manifestly false, as well as being grossly sexist and belittling. By 1968, the year in which this episode is set, she had competed against at least 59 male chess players (28 of them simultaneously in one game), including at least ten Grandmasters of that time, including Dragolyub Velimirovich, Svetozar Gligoric, Paul Keres, Bojan Kurajica, Boris Spassky, Viswanathan Anand and Mikhail Tal. The last three were also world champions during their careers.”

Attorneys with Rufus-Isaacs Acland & Grantham LLP state shared, “Netflix brazenly and deliberately lied about Gaprindashvili’s achievements for the cheap and cynical purpose of ‘heightening the drama’ by making it appear that its fictional hero had managed to do what no other woman, including Gaprindashvili, had done,” adding, “The arrogant refusal to take responsibility for its actions was shockingly tone-deaf, given the sexism and offensiveness of its lie.”

Responding to the same, Netflix’s spokesperson on Thursday said, “Netflix has only the utmost respect for Ms. Gaprindashvili and her illustrious career, but we believe this claim has no merit and will vigorously defend the case.”

Although there’s been little official news for Rick and Morty season 6, fans can rest assured that the Adult Swim show will be returning for another installment. After a brief delay, the Rick and Morty season 5 finale dropped on September 5, 2021, with episodes 9 and 10 airing back-to-back as a one-hour special.

Rick and Morty season 5 has been a mixed bag, containing some of the show’s best — and arguably, worst — episodes to date. The outing “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort” was particularly memorable, offering insight into Rick’s past while setting up a storyline for his future. Although the hiatus between episode 8 and the two-part finale surprised many, it was likely a calculated move by Adult Swim, which has invested heavily in their irreverent animated adult comedy.

Leading up to the Rick and Morty season 5 finale, Adult Swim built up hype for the show with unique live-action promos with Christopher Lloyd as Grandpa Rick. While these may or may not have been hinting at a possible live-action movie(most likely the latter), the teasers that took the internet by storm. Clearly, expectations are high for the show going forward. Here’s what we know so far about Rick and Morty season 6.

Rick and Morty has already been renewed for season 6. Since Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for 70 episodes back in 2018, and each season has comprised 10 episodes, viewers can expect Rick and Morty to continue until approximately season 10. The Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland series shows no signs of slowing down, and season 6 (and 7) scripts are already being written; however, an exact release date for the show’s next installment is not yet known.

An optimistic guess would predict Rick and Morty season 6 debuting in late-summer 2022, assuming Adult Swim wants to release new episodes roughly the same time each year. Unfortunately, history indicates a different pattern: after the show was renewed in 2018, it took approximately one year and four months for season 4 to debut. Furthermore, there was more than a year between when season 4 ended and season 5 began. Based on those production timelines, Rick and Morty season 6 won’t likely debut until October 2022 at the earliest.

Not much is known about the stories planned for Rick and Morty season 6, but the main characters — Rick, Morty, Summer, Beth, and Jerry — will almost certainly be back for more shenanigans. Rick and Morty season 5 introduced new characters who could return, like Morty’s ex, Planetina, or U.S. marine Coop (who was left traumatized after being transformed into a turkey — all while serving his country). The return of Birdperson in episode 8 sets up an emotional reunion for him and Rick in the future, while the multiple appearances by President Curtis suggest he could be a recurring character in Rick and Morty going forward.

The Queen’s Gambit, a television miniseries based on Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel of the same name, progresses toward an October arrival on Netflix, auspiciously touting a headliner in rising star Anya Taylor-Joy.

Creators Scott Frank (Godless) and Allan Scott (The Witches) wrote the serial television adaptation, which Frank directed for its 7-episode frame. The story of The Queen’s Gambit centers on orphaned young American woman Beth Harmon (Taylor-Joy), who endured a rough and cynical upbringing by embracing the game of chess, becoming a prodigious player who starts to dominate the competition circuit, and eventually reaches international levels. However, her story is an odyssey of self-destruction by way of drugs, alcohol and childhood-inflicted anxieties, all of which threaten her chances to become the best player in the world.

The industry stock of headliner Anya Taylor-Joy continues to experience an upward trajectory ever since a breakout starring role in director Robert Eggers’s 2015 horror film, The Witch, subsequently rising further with TV runs on BBC’s Atlantis and Netflix/BBC One’s Peaky Blinders, and cemented with a co-starring role opposite James McAvoy in director M. Knight Shyamalan’s thriller, Split, which she would reprise in 2019’s Glass. Her upcoming starring role in The Queen’s Gambit will cap off a year that’s already seen her appear in three films, Emma, Here Are the Young Men and years-delayed Marvel movie The New Mutants. However, 2021 will see her back on the big screen with director Edgar Wright’s April-scheduled thriller, Last Night in Soho. In another notable tidbit, she’s also favored to star in director George Miller’s developing Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, as a younger version of Charlize Theron’s instant-classic post-apocalyptic badass.

Taylor-Joy is joined in The Queen’s Gambit cast by names such as Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Moses Ingram, Chloe Pirrie, Bill Camp, Marielle Heller, Janina Elkiin, Matthew Dennis Lewis and, notably, Harry Melling, the radically-transformed former child actor of the Harry Potter film franchise, who famously played Harry’s obnoxious, spoiled muggle cousin, Dudley Dursley. Additionally, Annabeth Kelly plays the child version of Taylor-Joy’s protagonist, Beth, in flashback scenes throughout the series.

The series is in solid hands with creator Scott Frank, who worked on the screenplays for prominent films such as Logan, The Interpreter, Minority Report and Get Shorty, and wrote and directed A Walk Among the Tombstones and The Lookout. Pertinent to the show’s platform, he served as writer and director for Netflix’s 2017 Western series, Godless, which was headlined by Michelle Dockery. Frank’s creative partner here, Allan Scott, is a veteran screenwriter who’s worked on a variety of notable films over the decades, perhaps best known as the sole screenwriter of 1990’s iconic Roald Dahl adaptation, The Witches, which happens to have a Robert Zemeckis-directed reboot currently in the works.
