Beta Cacturne
There's a terabyte of leaked stuff from Gamefreak going around right now, and one of the coolest things in it is a bunch of concept art of Pokemon that are rendered in a much darker, edgier art style than the normal one we're so used to.

HAVE YOU HEARD THE NEWS ABOUT CYRUS BEING CANONICALLY AUTISTIC
well sure but I figured we all knew that for years due to his nature? One of the most obvious autistic characters ever invented right behind Fegan Floop of Spy Kids fame.
#nothing in that leak changes the way I see ANYTHING#except like marginally getting Arceus' sigil better but I kinda Figured it was tied to her kids#stuff happened to line up with shit we've been saying for forever and everything that didnt well... who care...#didnt get IN the games so it do not mattaaarrr#I do really like those REALLY fucked up myths though those were COOL#dont quite feel like pokemon cuz theyre like beta stuff but I can see some cleaned up ones fitting well#well beta + everythings translated pretty cockroach shit style atm#oh and those early concept arts... cacturn literally looks like a creeper of minecraft#would LOVE to know which artist those were!!!#idk I dont think they imply a darker tone to the games or anything thats not super how concept art works#anyways idk I have a hate but mild interest relationship with leaks[ONLY HATE FOR LEAKS OF THINGS SET TO BE RELEASED LATER]#and also I feel he was like. obviously canonically autistic from day ONE#look at him.#sorry I rambled mwah

somebody working at gamefreak in the early 2000s was off their shit with how many downright creepy designs their are for gen 3
not posting anything about the gamefreak leaks just in case pikachu comes to my house and shoots me for it but all i'll say is that i much prefer beta lickilicky compared to the one we got
#bwark#beta cacturne is horrifying#and what's believed to be the metagross line. though i actually like these beta designs. they're creepy in a cool way#also beta mudkip is COMPLETELY different. scorbunny going for a swim

Yeah, I don't know what to post about the Pokemon Teraleak yet. There's just so much, I haven't sorted it out in my mind yet.
And to tell the truth, some of the big revelations about Gen 3 and 4 are just confirming things the Pokemon theorists already thought. Theorists already mapped the three trios in Gen 1-4 to the Arceus circle - it's just really neat to confirm that GameFreak intended it this way. And that there are Pokemon in the circle that we didn't know about, some that haven't been translated yet. And apparently the circle confirms the idea of psuedo-legendaries though, which is cool.
I think one thing it proves is that GameFreak developers can be a lot more hardcore and weird than the easily predictable, pattern-based company we've browbeaten each other into accepting for decades. The...um...furry fics...? Canalave "extended lore"?...proves that. And then there are the more monstrous Gen 3 concepts that I wouldn't even connect to Pokemon if not for the Unown rock monster (the first Regi?) and the Cacturne. I kinda hope this is the origin or Cacturne and Metagross, and they were just refined down to versions that fit the other art style.
That's what I'd like to think of each generation being: a collection of very different designs from different perspectives that they came together to brainstorm before refining them into one coherent artstyle.
I'd also like to think of the Unown rock monster as the first inspiration for the Regis, with the Unown evolving into the Braille used with the Regis in the final build.
I'm seeing a kind of synchronicity phenomenon here, where the vibe of the beta Pokemon is still communicated in the final build somehow. Not only do the betas reflect the style of their era, but because the fans are inspired by the games, their fakemon somehow synchronize with the vibes of the betas through the final build. I'm not sure how to explain it better than that? The fakemon that my friends and I worked on during Gen 3 and 4 resemble some of these Gen 3 betas. I think there was a style of the time, and I think that a lot of GameFreak's intentions for the design elements of the game are successfully implied through the experience, so fans tend to reconstitute that as their own headcanons. Does that make sense?
It's a miracle I got to sleep last night, after fiendishly tracking every leak I could from the afternoon to the early hours of the morning. I think I might be finally be ready to take a break from the leaks (besides sleeping). I mean, I thought I'd be one of those people to immediately post the leaks and my opinions about them as they came out, but for whatever reason I didn't feel like it, maybe because they haven't stopped coming out. So I'll get to sharing my opinions at some point.
Have fun with the leaks!

What's your opinion on the massive beta pokemon leak, any favorites out of this batch of unused designs?
I got zillions of asks but sorting through it and my thoughts would be a whole big project! For the most part I agree with most decisions to scrap a design, in other cases I'm sad the concept was scrapped but I still think the design needs work. I wish cacturne actually had the freaky funky body shape of the scary concept art, and especially the eye placement! I wonder if they considered it as a third evolution.

ok im gonna be honest, while some of the leaked pokemon beta artwork, concept art, design notes, discarded sprites etc look very real (esp some of the concept art for the mons we got, i love the cacturne one, and some of the hoenn stuff ive seen before), a good 80% of it looks fake as hell. if im being honest. like absolute mickey mouse bullshit. i'm surprised it's being taken seriously. like, the "beta" designs that are very obviously just badly edited official art and sprites? come on
i dont know the validity of those character design info sheets but im tickled by confirmed latina skyla and autistic cyrus. Well, We Knew That. drayden's is interesting too

Game Freak massive breach . . .
First, I want to say I feel REALLY bad for the poor Game Freak dev who got phished. Lots of personal employee information (including full names, addresses, and phone numbers) have been leaked. This is truly, truly awful.
On the other hand, Pokémon fans were blessed (and cursed) with never-before-seen beta Pokémon designs, unused sprites, maps, and BGMs, trainer concept art and biographies, small details of upcoming Gen X ("Project Gaia") and Legends: Z-A, wild bits of lore (including the origins of the Pokémon universe), past and present discussions about the Pokémon anime, and . . . uh . . . other things.
Lots of information, both genuine and false, is circulating throughout the internet. It is a bit difficult to find everything, I recommend checking out CentroLeaks on X/Twitter or the "Beta Leaks Megathread" on r/PokeLeaks.
Some examples:
BETA GEN V PROTAGONISTS
BETA GEN III STARTERS
CACTURNE CONCEPT ART (WTF??)
OTHER CONCEPT ART (???)
GEN III VERSION OF SCRAFTY
EARLY UNOVA MAP SKETCH
EVOLUTIONARY LINE CONCEPTS FOR GEN III
AUTISTIC CYRUS
SEXY PILOT SKYLA
And there is literally so much more. I will not DARE post some of the dev's "the boundary between Pokémon and humans was unclear" stories . . .

The thing I find so annoying about the Pokémon teraleak is people talking about it that clearly lack an understanding on development process.
Like they'll point at something and make wild assumptions.
A decent example of this is the cool spooky Cacturne concept art!
This one!
I personally love and adore this art and the rest in the set. It feels so non-Pokemon and is maybe some of the most inspiring and fascinating Pokémon related material I've seen in a long time.
However, in reality, this wasn't going to ever be Cacturne, it's art that was drawn to get an idea on paper that they'd then Pokémon-ify later.
Same deal as stuff like people pointing at beta designs for the Flabébé line and calling them cut Pokémon.
Or saying "Diving was cut from Kalos" when in reality I'm willing to bet they were just testing it for ORAS since Kalos is lacking in any major water areas. And we know that Soaring was cut from X&Y now, so if it was actually planned we'd likely be aware of that
.
This next one, I'm gonna put an asterisk on how real it is as part of the leak, since now is the time a lot of people can just make stuff up and try to pass it around as part of the leak, and I haven't seen it from a credible sourse
But all the 'Zoophila' Pokémon stories written. To be blunt, if that shit is spicy to you, you clearly haven't read ANY mythology, that's all pretty basic and not something to freak out over. It's just writing stories that parallel real folk tales in our world but with Pokémon.
I'm fairly certain most people have just heard that they're a thing and are assuming the worst.
All of the information we're getting from this is insanely cool, but gods, every time I see a person talk about it, they are misinterpreting something and confidently saying it like the leak itself said that.
I don't have all the answers either, but I'm not out here making bold claims as someone who can't tell the cut fossil Pokémon is a Dodo bird and not a vulture, or that the poorly drawn Diamond and Pearl sprites are placeholders and not early versions of the finals
#skyla.ramble#Pokémon#Pokemon#This element has been annoying to me and I kill for actually good coverage instead of the low effort slop alot of Pokémon creators make#I will just see stuff on my own and wait for a cool person to make a 10 hour video covering everything#Also there's some problems with the leakers themselves as always but thats a more serious thing

So heard of the Teraleaks for Pokemon? NGL Feel really bad about that employee that got phished to have this released. The leak itself was whatever but the hacker outright doxxing them was shitty.
On another note, highlights include Cyrus of Team Galactic being confirmed autistic in his character bio (IIRC they flat out use that exact word too), Beta Lickylicky's full design finally being uncovered, a TON of unreleased Pokemon lore and background being unearthed especially around Arceus, scrapped GameFreak games, and possibly leaks for Pokemon Legends ZA
Also, apparently there's some Pokemon Concept art that's drawn in a very different style than what we know, a lot darker and realistic looking imo. It looks like Gen 3 or 4 was gonna have a different vibe than what we got initially it looks like.
I saw this in passing, let's actually delve into this.-
-Hulk Hogan is partially the inspiration for Drayden
... Not since James being a partial reference point for Homer Simpson have I ever taken such psychic damage in this manner.
-Huh, so Cyrus just might be autistic. Maybe. There seems to have been a community note but it got removed. I dunno. Assuming he is-
I'll take it. He's not a fucking moron like Archie/Maxie, he's not contradictory and boring like Lysandre and he's got some level of depth unlike Giovanni. And yeah, I get it. The conflict of thinking in an excessively logical way but feeling such intense emotions. This is a win.
-I guess those Fakemon designs aren't that bad, considering so many just look like Beta Pokemon.
-That uh...that creation myth was something. Someone in Game Freak is a HUGE mythology nerd cuz that whole thing had the same feeling as learning about the creation myth of Chaos. ALso somewhat implies the pseudo-Legendaries ARE in fact 'pseudo-Legendaries'
Though note- No Giritina mentioned. So this likely isn't canon.
-Yeah, those are some realistic looking concepts. Especially that beta Cacturne. Kinda glad they didn't go this route because A. looks good but doesn't fit Pokemon's style. B. The style we did get was far more cohesive with older Pokemon. And C. Would work better as an independent monster collector built around this concept. As in- Pokemon did NOT need to dominant ANOTHER aspect of monster collecting.
Also not surprising- Gen 4 had a lot of sharper, more adult-like designs like Gallade or Electrivire.
-'A game about raising and fighting bugs. You can also fuse them' Cool concept, Game Freak. If you do this, please do it without using Pokemon. Again, we don't need Pokemon consuming MORE of it's genre. ... Look, I value the distinction between Pokemon and SMT VERY heavily.
-So looks like Pokemon has been eyeing cutting the Pokedex since Gen 3. Reminds me of the Foxacade video where he said something similar (that their best bet to do this was back in Gen 3). Also shows ideas for what would become Mega Evolution, Dynamax and Gholdengo back in 2000.
P.S. 'They tried to make a game simple but included the REGIS?!' Dude, we went from themes of letting go of past glory and moving on to two dunderheads who failed fourth grade biology.
-So they knew people were gonna go crazy for Skyla. Always thought she was...specially made. Also explains why I keep seeing Shadow in my research.
-... And yet these stories are still better implementation of adult themes than Palworld.
On a serious note- What is up with that fucking Slaking story?
-I don't see any ZA info other than some passing info on Gen 10. Which really sucks for the developers- they're likely getting crunched still and now their hard work that they could deliver with maximum impact using good marketing is now just laid bare for everyone to mock them over.
-Lastly: It's not bad enough some poor grunt accidentally leaked a massive amount of info, likely getting him blacklisted from Japan's video gaming industry but they also had to get their info released so they can get blacklisted everywhere else AND mocked for it?
I don't care much for or against leaks but come on, have some decorum.
