How to Plan the Perfect Glamping Getaway?
Tumblr media
Glamping, a fusion of glamour and camping, has taken the world by storm. Combining the rugged beauty of nature with the comforts of luxury, it offers the best of both worlds. But planning the perfect glamping getaway requires more than just booking a tent. From picking the right location to ensuring you pack the essentials, here's everything you need to create a memorable experience.
1. Choose the Perfect Glamping Destination
Selecting the right location is the first and most critical step. The beauty of glamping is its flexibility, allowing you to camp in diverse landscapes such as mountains, forests, beaches, or deserts. Consider what kind of environment excites you most.
Top Glamping Destinations Worldwide
Yosemite National Park, USA – Surrounded by towering cliffs and waterfalls, this destination offers an ideal blend of wilderness and cozy luxury accommodations.
Scottish Highlands, UK – Misty hills, rugged terrain, and peaceful seclusion make this one of the most serene spots for a glamping retreat.
The Outback, Australia – For the more adventurous, glamping in the Outback offers proximity to unique wildlife and incredible natural beauty.
Tuscany, Italy – If rolling hills and vineyards are more your style, glamping in Tuscany provides a relaxing escape paired with excellent local wine and food.
Ensure that your chosen destination matches the season you're planning your trip. For example, glamping in the mountains during winter may require extra preparation, while glamping by the beach is best enjoyed in summer.
2. Pick Your Style of Accommodation
One of the biggest perks of glamping is the wide variety of accommodation options. Each option offers different levels of comfort and amenities. The key is to choose the one that best suits your preferences.
Popular Types of Glamping Accommodations
Luxury Safari Tents – These are larger than regular tents and come equipped with actual beds, en-suite bathrooms, and even air conditioning. Perfect for those who want the camping experience with minimal sacrifice on comfort.
Treehouses – For a more whimsical stay, treehouses offer breathtaking views and an immersive experience within nature.
Yurts – Originally used by Mongolian nomads, yurts are circular, tent-like structures that provide excellent insulation, often featuring wooden floors and even kitchens.
Airstreams and Tiny Homes – For those who prefer modern amenities, retro Airstream trailers and tiny homes combine mobility with sleek, minimalist interiors.
The right choice of accommodation can elevate your glamping experience, so be sure to pick one that caters to your comfort needs and preferences.
3. Plan Your Glamping Activities
While glamping often includes the joys of relaxing in nature, the surrounding area usually offers plenty of activities. Consider what experiences you want to incorporate into your getaway.
Popular Glamping Activities
Hiking and Exploring Nature Trails – Most glamping spots are near nature reserves, forests, or parks. Be sure to explore the trails for a deeper connection with the surrounding environment.
Wildlife Watching – If you're glamping in an area known for its wildlife, such as the African savannah or the American Rockies, bring along a pair of binoculars and a camera.
Water Sports – Glamping near rivers or lakes often includes options like kayaking, fishing, or even paddleboarding.
Stargazing – With minimal light pollution in many glamping locations, stargazing is a favorite activity. Some glamping sites even provide telescopes for a closer look at the night sky.
Outdoor Dining – Enjoy an alfresco meal under the stars. Many glamping resorts provide outdoor kitchens or BBQ setups.
Having a balance of activities ensures that your glamping trip is both exciting and relaxing.
4. Pack the Essentials
While glamping takes away much of the hassle of traditional camping, such as setting up tents or preparing for harsh weather, it’s important to pack wisely. The idea is to enjoy nature with comfort, so packing thoughtfully is key.
Glamping Packing List
Clothing – Pack for the weather. Layering is always a good idea, as temperatures can drop at night even in warmer areas. Don't forget comfortable hiking boots, hats, and sunglasses.
Toiletries – While many glamping sites have full bathrooms, it's always best to bring your own essentials. Eco-friendly products are often encouraged, especially in more remote locations.
Electronics – Even though many go glamping to disconnect, if you prefer to stay connected, bring a portable charger or a solar-powered battery pack. Don’t forget your camera to capture the stunning scenery.
Entertainment – Books, board games, or even a guitar can make for great downtime activities.
Food and Snacks – While many glamping resorts offer gourmet meals, you might want to bring your favorite snacks or picnic ingredients, especially if you plan on cooking.
Bringing the right gear can significantly enhance your glamping experience, making your stay more comfortable and enjoyable.
5. Opt for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Choices
Glamping is often about reconnecting with nature, and one way to show appreciation is by adopting sustainable practices during your stay. Many glamping sites are designed to minimize their environmental footprint, and guests can contribute by following eco-friendly guidelines.
Sustainable Glamping Tips
Use biodegradable products – Soaps, shampoos, and detergents that are kind to the environment are often required or encouraged by glamping hosts.
Minimize waste – Bring reusable containers, water bottles, and cutlery to reduce single-use plastics.
Respect wildlife – While glamping brings you closer to nature, remember to observe animals from a distance and avoid disturbing their natural habitats.
Support local communities – Opt for glamping experiences that collaborate with local businesses, ensuring your stay contributes positively to the region’s economy and culture.
By choosing eco-friendly practices, not only do you help preserve the environment, but you also ensure that future generations can enjoy the same beautiful landscapes.
6. Consider the Best Time to Go Glamping
Timing your glamping trip is crucial to its success. Different destinations are best suited for certain seasons, and understanding the weather patterns of your chosen location will help you plan accordingly.
Seasonal Glamping Considerations
Spring and Fall – These seasons are ideal for most glamping locations due to milder temperatures and fewer tourists. The beauty of blooming flowers in spring or the vibrant colors of fall foliage adds to the magic.
Summer – Perfect for beach glamping or mountain retreats where you can escape the heat. However, it’s also peak season for most popular spots, so book early.
Winter – For those seeking a cozy, snow-filled adventure, glamping in yurts or cabins equipped with wood-burning stoves is a dream come true. Popular destinations include Scandinavia, Canada, and the Rocky Mountains.
Careful planning regarding the time of year ensures your glamping getaway is as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.
Conclusion
Planning the perfect glamping getaway requires attention to detail, from choosing the right destination and accommodation to packing appropriately and planning activities. By embracing the balance of nature and luxury, you can create an unforgettable glamping experience that redefines camping.

ok this is really hard to explain but i'm gonna go for it. let me try and sketch out the vibes of summer in the Appalachians for y'all
first thing you need to understand is the heat. it's not dry. it is humid, it is smothering. the air is always heavy with humidity and dread and there's only really breezes if you're lucky or if there's a storm coming in. where i live, regular temperatures during the summer range from 85f/29.9c to 98f/36.6c. you will go outside wearing a tank top and shorts maybe a t-shirt and you WILL be sweating buckets anyways. god forbid you be in a place indoors without air conditioning because you Will Feel Like You're Suffocating
second thing: the appalachias are old. older than humans. older than bones. older than saturn's rings. if you go out on a hike in summer (weve done it a couple times- bring a big insulated water bottle or else you WILL get heatstroke), the air is still and stifling and the only noise is your sorry ass panting as you climb a round-topped mountain. it's absolutely silent unless there's cicadas. if there's no cicadas, you'll wish there's cicadas.
third thing: coinciding with points one and two, you start to see why i say that sometimes it feels like there's something Old here. old, watching intently, and neutral at best towards humankind. people have gotten lost in these hills. there's bugs and there's rot and there's the sleepy drone of the forest just waiting to lull you to your death. the UK has faeries, the Appalachians have... whatever the fuck this is.
it's also almost impossible to describe how fucking PREVALENT evangelicalism is here. you breathe God as much as you breathe the humidity. they're selling him everywhere: on the signs, spraypainted on suburban walls, his name is on old broken-down cars a five minute drive from Highway 62. i've lived here my entire life and i'm starting to think now that these people had the right idea, at least at the start: if there's a God here, they've picked the wrong one
as soon as you get out of the population centers and cities choked with car smoke, you know you're in a domain not intended for humans anymore. it's empty. especially as you go further south towards the coast. it's all just farmland, far as the eyes can see, the hills disappearing, all you can hear on the radio is that shitty old rock station that crackles into static occasionally and all you can see are the farms and the occasional silo, blight-struck wheat rotting in the fields.
i'm not laying it on thick for any part of this, by the way. i haven't even gotten to the old run-down (and not in an aesthetic way) trailer parks, or the tight-knit mountain towns that know everybody's name and everybody's secrets, or the strange folklore that just get scarier the farther out you go. i'm being as serious as i can here. this is just what it's like.
winter and fall are better, at least, and actually more than tolerable at times. the air loses its deathly weight and becomes cold and fresh and clear, but it's so, so quiet. at least you can breathe then, and it feels less like something's watching you and more that it's asleep for now, alongside the landscape
in conclusion, the appalachias are old and do not like fast change much like the people and culture here do and none of this will ever make sense to anybody who hasn't been here until you actually visit for yourself. hope this helps!
i know this is because ive lived here my entire life and summer's finally setting in but bro the american deep south in the summer months is like, idk how to explain it but if you're not entirely used to it then it absolutely feels like something is wrong with it. i'll explain later

Our favourite non-violent games of E3 Week 2021
Back in 2019, we ran a post listing every non-violent game shown during E3. Given this year’s array of E3 and E3-adjacent events produced 115 upcoming non-violent games (as you may have read somewhere), that just wasn’t practical. Instead, Rebekah and I have each picked out five our our faves. Enjoy!
- James
REBEKAH’S TOP 5
Tumblr media
Pekoe
There is perhaps nothing cozier than tea and cats. Pekoe puts the player in the shoes of the newest resident and teahouse owner in a town of sentient cats. The cats want your tea, and you can learn to make it for them, learning about different tea varieties and tea making styles as you go while building relationships with the town’s inhabitants. You can upgrade and customize your teahouse, visit other teahouses for inspiration, and learn about different rituals, customs, and preparation styles for tea. Pekoe is developed by (appropriately) Kitten Cup Studio, and is planned for release in 2022.
Tumblr media
Bear and Breakfast
Build and run a bed and breakfast in a tranquil wood...but also, you’re a bear! Startout with a rundown old inn, and build it up into splendor again while attracting and awing tourists who come to stay. Bear and Breakfast is a laidback management sim about growing a cozy woodland business, but with the added bonus of a forest mystery that unravels as your bustling breakfast nook grows. Developed by Gummy Cat, and planned for release later this year.
Tumblr media
Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery
Behind the Frame follows an artist living alone, preparing a masterpiece for a gallery submission. It’s a puzzle game focused on both her day to day activities, her interactions with a fellow painter and neighbor (and his cat!), and painting itself. You’ll use a painting and sketch mechanic to solve puzzles that explore memory and emotion, all of which takes place in a hand-animated world that looks like it was pulled straight out of a Ghibli movie. Developed by Akupara Games.
Tumblr media
Bird Problems
There are a lot of unique ideas for non-violent games and mechanics out there, but one I had personally never seen before was modeling a game after a sitcom. Bird Problems follows a young bird named Tweeter Gregory who’s clumsy and awkward, but just wants to make friends and enjoy a nice boba tea. We haven’t seen much of this game from Lithic Entertainment just yet, but its trailer at the Wholesome Direct stood out due to its resemblance to the goofy sitcoms of the 90s. But with birds!
Tumblr media
A Little to the Left
Many of the non-violent games shown over the recent E3 weeks were narrative-focused, but sometimes all you want is a pleasant little puzzle game. A Little to the Left is less complicated, and in that way seems straightforward and soothing: it’s about reorganizing, tidying up, and setting things right. You’ll spend it arranging objects into patterns that look pleasant, with occasional “help” from a mischievous interrupting cat. Developed by Max Inferno, it’s planned for launch this October.
JAMES’ TOP 5
Tumblr media
Forza Horizon 5
If you know what Forza Horizon is, you’re likely already looking forward to this one and/or have pre-ordered it/subscribed to Xbox Game Pass. For those who don’t, here’s a quick crash course (pun absolutely not intended): Developed by UK studio Playground Games, Horizon is the open-world spin-off series from Microsoft’s acclaimed Forza Motorsport franchise. While Motorsport focuses on simulation racing, Horizon offers a slightly more arcade-like experience, letting players loose behind the wheels of some of the world’s most powerful cars. You explore the landscape (Mexico, this time) to find more race locations or other ways to raise your Influence. Doing so unlocks the Top Gear-esque showstopper challenge. New to the mix are Expeditions, which take you on guided tours of the most beautiful places of the map, and Horizon Arcade, which lets you create your own tracks, stunts and races. Forza Horizon 5 is due for release on November 9th.
Tumblr media
Sable
This indie sci-fi exploration game has been in the works for several years, but it’s finally approaching release. Set on a desert planet, you play a young woman from a nomadic tribe sent on a ritualistic quest to explore the world - on a hoverbike. Akin to Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder, or more accurately the giant USB dongle Rey drove in The Force Awakens, your task is to discover more about the world as you learn more about yourself. Investigating the wreckage of old ships will help you find the components you need to upgrade your bike, and as you meet other tribes, you can complete side quests to help them and forge new friendships. Developed by Shedworks, Sable will be available from September 23rd.
Tumblr media
Phantom Abyss
This game has a bit of an Indiana Jones meets Mirror's Edge kind of vibe. Players race through ancient temples, leaping chasms and dodging booby traps, in the hopes of being the first to reach the relic at the centre. You don't technically compete with other players in real time; instead, you race their ghosts, following their leads and learning from their mistakes. Each temple is randomly generated, but as soon as someone claims the relic, they are declared champion of that particular temple and the course is removed forever, cementing their victory. And yes, you have an Indy-style whip to swing across gaps. It’s developed by Team WIBY and launched in Early Access last week.
Tumblr media
Lake
Most video game stories present the player with world-ending stakes, sending them on an urgent quest where the clock is always ticking. Lake is a much more personal and relaxed affair. Set in 1986, you take on the role of Meredith Weiss, a forty-something career woman taking a break ahead of her software company’s big launch. She heads back to the fictional lakeside town of Providence Oaks, Oregon, her childhood home, to rediscover old friends and see what (if anything) has changed. She also takes on her father’s role as a mail carrier, delivering letters and parcels each day while he is on holiday. During the two weeks, she can forge friendships, find love, or even choose to give up her career and make a new home for herself - the choice is up to you. Lake is developed by Gamious and is due for release by the end of the year.
Tumblr media
Schim
This 3D puzzle platformer has a simple but wonderfully creative premise: jumping between shadows. You control a schim: the soul of a living creature or object. This particular schim has become separated from the human being it was attached to, and it’s up to you to reunite them. You can hop between shadows as if they were pools of water, and if a shadow is moving (for example, the shadow of someone walking about or a bird flying) that pool will move and take you with it. Working out the best route between shadows is the only way to navigate each level, set across various urban and rural spaces. Timing is the key, because as soon as you leap out of a shadow and land in the light, it’s game over. As you can see, all of this is presented in a beautifully distinct style. Schim is being developed by Ewould van der Werf, although a release window has yet to be decided.

‘I was like who is this god – whatever he wants to do I’ll do it. He’s a genius.’   Norman Reedus about Hideo Kojima
Norman Reedus talks Hideo Kojima’s ‘crazy complicated’ Death Stranding
By: Adam Starkey | Metro UK
Norman Reedus has given some details about Hideo Kojima’s highly-anticipated new project Death Stranding, describing it as ‘positive, scary and depressing’ all at the same time.
The 50-year-old actor, best known for playing Daryl in TV series The Walking Dead, is set to play a lead role via motion capture in the PlayStation 4 title, alongside Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Lindsay Wagner, Troy Baker, and director Guillermo Del Toro.
Figuring out what Death Stranding actually is, however, has become a game in itself – with last year’s E3 2018 trailer showing Norman’s character, Sam Bridges, traversing vast landscapes with various packages in a future sci-fi setting.
GameCentral caught up with Norman Reedus on the set of his TV show Ride With Norman Reedus in March last year, but his discussion of Death Stranding has been embargoed until now.
‘That guy is such a genius, Hideo Kojima,’ Norman said. ‘I’m like, ‘Oh so they’ll be playing me?’ And he’s like, ‘No they are you. We will make them cry as you.’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about? It’s a video game.”
Speaking about what to expect in Death Stranding, Norman added: ‘The concept is so far out into the future. Instead of eliminating everyone around you, it’s bringing everyone together. It’s a very positive video game, but scary and depressing at the same time.
‘It’s kind of a new movie. I’ve never seen anything like what we’re doing. Guillermo Del Toro introduced me to him, who is also working on the game; he’s also a character in the game.
‘I saw that video game director at the Video Game Music Awards, walk down the steps and they lit up underneath his feet like Michael Jackson and he goes, ‘I’m back.’ And the place is like, ‘Oh my god.’ Like grown men in tears.
‘I was like who is this god – whatever he wants to do I’ll do it. He’s a genius.’
Asked if the trailers released so far (before E3 2018) were representative of the game, Norman replied: ‘He keeps telling me people will watch all these trailers, they’ll come up with these ideas and look for all these Easter eggs, and they have been doing that.’
‘The trailers show you an aspect of it, but not a whole picture of what the game will be. That’s like a whole other thing. It’s complicated, it’s a crazy complicated game. I’ve been learning a lot about video games doing it.’
Death Stranding has been described as an action game set in an open world environment, with main character Sam sent to a purgatory-like alternative world every time the player dies.
It’s a particularly important game for Hideo Kojima, as it represents his first project for independent studio Kojima Productions following his messy split from Konami in 2015.
Death Stranding will release exclusively on PlayStation 4, with a release date yet to be confirmed.

73. Nazi-Punks Fuck Off!
Suky is a booker and promotor for Queer As Punk, a queer music night in Edinburgh. Their political compass in booking gigs leads the way through a messy musical landscape. When bands and artists do the same, their paths might cross with a fun, safe concert for all parties involved. You can fuck off if you’re a racist, bigot, transphobe or just being a dick at shows.
What’s more this episode: cringey, unnecessary t.v. shows, a throwback to the very first QS episode and support from an unexpected corner of the UK.

Industry Trend: Sony Drops Out. E3 Is Dying. Maybe That's a Good Thing?
Sony has decided it won’t have a showcase at E3 in 2019. Some see this as a terrible sign. However, even with this news, the expo has been slowly dying for some time. It might seem all doom and gloom but maybe this is all a good thing? We break down why the absence of the E3 Expo may do the industry some good.
It’s been a good few months since we all settled in to watch the events of 2018's E3 event unfold. We got to see what the beloved yearly showcase had to offer us whether it was news, surprises or cringe-worthy out-of-touch presentations. That said, the event came and went and it seems to have become largely forgettable already… Why? Because E3 is a relic of the past and something that probably doesn't need to exist anymore.
There’s no denying that E3 is a great time for video games and acts as both a celebration and showcase of what games can be, and how varied our medium is. With such a variety of genres and experiences at hand, we get to show the world just how great gaming can be and how it can resonate with people of all ages and origins. Make no mistake, that kind of event is incredibly important and is something that will always be cherished by game devs and players alike. I, like many others, absolutely love E3 week. For the past few years I’ve been able to book the time off for it so I can watch it all happen live as it happens. Sure, it usually takes place in the early hours of the morning for those of us in the UK but I don’t mind; some people go to watch their favourites sports teams or their favourite bands but this was the kind of event that could truly grab my attention.
To me, games are an important part of my life. Whether it be for the escapism of visiting weird and wonderful places, the friendships forged over multiplayer or the excitement shared leading up to a new release, there was a whole host of reasons games spoke to me and with E3 having become the golden boy of gaming conventions and shows, I always do what I can to watch.
The past few years worth of shows have had their fair share of memorable moments. 2015 gave us Bethesda’s first showcase, the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Cuphead. 2016 gave us the reveal of Death Stranding, Project Scorpio and Spider-Man. 2017 gave us Metroid Prime 4, the Shadow of the Colossus remake and a trailer for Beyond Good & Evil 2. 2018’s E3 Expo, on the other hand, didn’t have anything that truly stood out for me. There were some surprises for sure but it all seemed to fade from memory within the space of a week. Some of the showcases given seemed almost pityful and lacking in content, with others arguably being dragged out longer than they should have been.
This isn’t something that’s unique to 2018’s show though; past E3 expo’s have seen an interesting shift and style as the landscape in which E3 sits becomes a more competitive one. E3 used to be the pinnacle of gaming events but that’s not the case anymore. As games have become increasingly embraced, more shows have expanded in influence and instead of having one huge blowout event to give us our news, we now have several. E3 is dying and, if you haven’t heard, Sony has recently hammered a further nail in the poor things coffin.
The news broke that Sony wasn’t planning on attending E3 2019 and that no presentation would be had either at the convention centre or elsewhere. Sony aren’t the first major player to turn their backs on E3 of course, with Nintendo opting to focus on their more polished Nintendo Direct presentations in more recent years. Presentations from the likes of Ubisoft, Square Enix and EA have been spotty at best and, to boot, PlayStation has an event of its own in the form of PSX. On top of all of this, other events are starting to step on E3’s toes. With so many events scattered throughout the year, there’s inevitably going to be a bit of a battle between them to see who can bring the biggest and best news to their own showfloors. PAX, EGX, GDC, Comic-Con, Paris Games Week, the Game Awards, Gamescom, QuakeCon, BlizzCon; everyone wants a slice of the pie. With so many shows in need of content and with only so much to go around, somebody has to draw the short straw.
One of the reasons so many events have sprung up and grown over the years is that it gives reveals a chance to breathe. Too often an announcement can be made and it is buried by bigger, better or simply more controversial news showing up immediately after. E3 is a prime example of this; with the conversation following such events always centering around a small handful of bullet-points, lesser known titles are being swept under the rug all too soon. By spreading out such things through the course of the year, it gives things a chance to hold the spotlight a little longer. What’s more, it also allows for more flexibility in release schedules; there’s often expectations attached to announcements and reveals that the content will surface within specific time frames afterwards. If you had the chance to reveal your game in January instead of June, people will instead have different preconceptions of when they will see more of the game and when it will release. A more flexible schedule allows for more flexible announcements and more flexible responses.
Why does this matter? Because game release schedules are getting more and more hectic. Just as they do within games conventions and conferences, releases are now battling it out for the best time to play their hand. Winter and Fall schedules are now home to countless big releases and all within a few weeks of each other. In years past we had Battlefield, Titanfall 2 and Call of Duty all surface within a matter of days. Both Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider took considerable hits in sales because they had been forced to face off against game releases that would unfortunately outmatch them. This year alone, we learned that Anthem, Days Gone and Crackdown 3 were all going to be released on the very same day in February of 2019 - something that has thankfully changed since.
E3 is arguably the largest of those gaming showcases and is seemingly shrinking. This may well open the doors to a more varied and well-balanced schedule for the plethora of conventions spread throughout the year and, in turn, the multitude of games we get to enjoy too. A less competitive peak period would also allow for games to get the focus they deserve in periods of the year we don’t often see larger titles. Would the original Dying Light have done so well if it had released in late 2014 instead of January 2015? Would the Witcher 3 have become the enormous hit it was if it had been released in the middle of the huge Fall 2014 releases such as Destiny, Fifa and the Grand Theft Auto V rerelease?
The absence of Sony at E3 next year also presents a unique situation for those who still plan on showing up. While it can be argued that Sony’s absence may well strike a significant blow against the game industry’s annual trade show, it does free up a significant amount of space for Microsoft and Nintendo to potentially occupy. It’s the first time in the event’s 23-year history that Sony hasn’t been there but with it being one of the strongest presences at the event it could prove an opportunity for others; maybe Nintendo could return to the E3 stage in full force. It’s also foolish to deny that Microsoft struggled during the first few years of this console generation. The Xbox has certainly come along way since and is in a stronger position than ever; Microsoft has done well to introduce new policies and features into their console infrastructure that have caught peoples attention. With the host of studios they have also taken control of, they may well be able to get of to a flying start in the generation to come. With an E3 stage next year that’s more spacious than ever, both Microsoft and Nintendo have the chance to grab it with both hands and show people what they’ve got that PlayStation hasn’t. More fierce competition brings fierce change.
With PlayStation having scrapped plans for PSX this year, there’s certainly a sizeable lack of Sony within the next year or so. Maybe they want to have PSX 2019 be one huge PlayStation celebration that’s topped with a PS5-shaped cherry? Maybe Sony just doesn’t want to have to be confined by the typical structure of games media year by year? Maybe Sony simply hasn’t got much to show off next year? Whatever the case may be, the gradual withering of E3 as the industry staple is actually a sign of something bigger.
We’re now spoilt for choice. While there was once a time where we had only one event to turn to, we now have a multitude of them. There is no longer just one celebration of the medium we love so much, there is a multitude of them. Gaming isn’t that hobby people didn’t understand like it used to be. Gaming isn’t seen as the cause of troubled youth like it used to be. Gaming isn’t the niche medium it used to be. We are now at a point where gaming is something that’s just part of nearly everyone’s day to day lives. We don’t need a single celebration of our industry because it’s celebrated consistently. While the slow death of E3 is certainly a shame, it symbolises more that the industry is getting bigger and better year by year.
The death of E3 might very well change the landscape of games media and the industry as a whole but it’s been allowed to happen because changes are already underway. Gaming media has embraced the culture of YouTuber’s, Twitch Streamers and Infuencers. It’s expanded into cross-media promotions. It’s working more closely with the fanbases that follow it. Games are forming passionate communities of players. Games are becoming services that are captivating players for longer than they used to. Games as a platform and medium have changed and so to must the means used to showcase them.
Sony has dropped out of E3. They’re undoubtedly gearing up for their next console and want to make sure that it surfaces with a far share games and revelations. Looking at the release schedule for big games going forward, they seem to all be releasing in the first half of 2019 or don’t have a solid date at all. Big changes are coming for PlayStation. Big changes are coming for gaming. Big changes are coming for E3.
E3 Is dying. Maybe that's a good thing? Change can be a good thing. In the next few years we will see new consoles, new approaches to gaming experiences and new ways that developers and publishers choose to interact with their players. For a group of people that love to spend their 1-UP’s and start things over, why not let our favourite trade show do the same…

The Forever Purge Trailer Breakdown with Director Everardo Gout
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
For one night a year, all crime is legal, including murder. For the rest of the year, America is peaceful and crime free. That was James DeMonaco’s original premise for The Purge, and the franchise is now onto its fifth – and ostensibly final – installment, The Forever Purge.  This one asks: what if some folks felt like one night just wasn’t enough?
Based on a script by DeMonaco and once again under the Blumhouse roof, The Forever Purge is directed by Everardo Gout best known for Days of Grace and his work on National Geographic sci-fi Mars.
Den of Geek got a sneaky early look at the explosive trailer for the movie and chatted to Gout, who broke down the action for us.
Watch the trailer:
It takes place after The Purge: Election Year
“This movie is in chronological order, it’s after all the movies that we have seen in a moment in time where the Founding Fathers are back in power and as the economy is booming, there’s some unrest. We are in Texas and we are following characters who came into the states and are trying to make a better way of life there.”
Authenticity was key
“Tenoch [Huerta] was my lead in Days of Grace, which is a movie that I made and you guys reviewed it a couple of years ago and it was an amazing review. And he went on to win the Mexican Academy Award. And so, give me my first Hollywood movie, I thought, I need to bring back my guy. We need to do this together. So, I went on to convince the studio that what we needed was authenticity and real people because a lot of times in Hollywood, you get a little bit of whitewash and the Latinos are not the real Latinos. And so, to me it was very important to portray it on a visceral, organic, authentic way.”
Josh Lucas is all American
“Josh Lucas will be the counterpart of the American family, of this amazing story of Latinos and Americans coming together in the face of violence and chaos. And so, these two who don’t look eye to eye, who bump heads, who have a rivalry, have to learn how to understand one another.”
Goat trap!
“You have to see the movie to be able to see how it works… James (DeMonaco) is very clever and he wanted to touch on a lot of different topics and issues and his vision for this world is always complex and is always very informed. And so, we wanted to have a little bit of a comment and explore the animality of our relationship as human beings with animals. So, that was the starting point – let’s try to bring some animals into the tale and let’s try through that animal-human empathy to devise something that could be used for our character.
“It was some of the finest work of our amazing VFX team. And we went through a long process of designing it and making it weird and refreshing and new so that we could surprise audiences. We had a lot of animals in the show, so we had the best people with the best care, the handlers of animals, lovely people, very in tune with the animal world. So, for the goat part it was an easy part to shoot.”
Scary bunny
“Because we were exploring animality we were like, how can we make something that is cute, terrifying? That’s always very effective, right? When you juxtapose two things and you create a third image by putting opposites together. It was very important for the rest of the masks to portray the texture and the landscape that we were showing because this movie spends a long time in day time as well, which is completely new for the franchise. We needed to explore new routes and that was a lot of fun.”
Daylight terror
“That was what was super interesting to me when I received the treatment for the movie and then speaking with James DeMonaco. He really wanted this to be a last chapter that was the kind of big bang that really revamped the franchise. Both him and I didn’t want to do [just] another Purge movie. It has to be the pinnacle of Purge. And the story demanded that and the challenges were there because now we have to translate into daytime. All of that was what inspired me to want to do the show. I wasn’t interested in doing ‘Purge five’. I was interested in doing The Forever Purge. You know what I mean? The concept of this one, the challenges of this one were very particular and extreme and that’s what made it appealing to me.”
Violence as a virus
“Well, the way that James described it to me at the beginning was let’s treat the Purge as a virus. And this was before COVID, so, that’s the irony of the world, but it’s that violence is like a virus and once you’re infected, you will infect other people by attacking them, by hurting them. And then it becomes about revenging and your hurt. So, now you have the virus and now you’re going to injure somebody else and so on and so forth. That was the main idea behind how a society, a regular society, gets infected with this urge to purge and that’s what informed all of our characters. The real evil is the disease itself. It’s not about one bad guy.”
“Does this translate?”
“Well obviously, my country, Mexico, and the United States are entangled. Our economies are dependent, one and the other, and you usually hear more about how Mexico is dependent on America, but Mexico really fuels America and does all the jobs in America that Americans don’t want to do. So, there’s a big dance in between the two countries that is historical and I know it very well.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
“What’s interesting about James’ movies and his writing and his concept is that it’s amazing entertainment, it’s filled with horror and thrill, but they are movies that you take with you. You don’t dispose of them as you’re leaving the theater, as you put your popcorn in the trash can the movie goes there – you take it with you. And that’s what’s interesting. So, obviously, the movie has a lot to say, but it’s for audiences to find their own truth while enjoying a thrill ride and a scary movie.”
The Forever Purge opens in cinemas on July 2 (US) and July 16 (UK)

Is the film as good as the book Megan? 🙏
WORLDS COLLIDE! Hannah!
Oh god, this is a question. I have a free evening so you’re getting my full attention and I’m always in the mood to talk CMBYN and unleash my ridiculous love so here goes!
First off, I will try not to be spoilery…. BUT THIS IS HUGE AND I HAVE OFFICIALLY GONE INTO HEART EYES MODE BUT HERE IS MY OVERVIEW.
I have loved the novel for so many years that it holds such a special and important significant for me so that’s difficult to compare anything to. I was 19 when I first read the novel and I’m nearly 29 now so that’s nearly 10 years of adoration….
That’s why I was terribly nervous when I heard they were making a movie. That kind of changed when I saw Armie’s instagram wayyyyyyyy back when in January 2017 around the same time as Sundance and he tagged it #billowyblueshirt - I pretty much lost my mind!!! I mean, THAT IS OLIVER. That’s how I pictured him  (minus baby Harper of course!). He was a little younger looking in my head but Armie looked SO MUCH like the Oliver in my mind.
Tumblr media
And then this came out:
youtube
I was so stunned because I didn’t really know much about Timmy. I recognised him from Homeland but that was it and yet, he looked like Elio. Again - I had the same response! He looked like the Elio I’d imagined in my head and that tiny clip made me so excited. It still didn’t stop me from being nervous as you can’t get much from a little clip but by the time the main trailer came out, I was BEYOND excited because so much of what I’d imagined was in front of me and so close to how I’d always pictured in my mind. Plus, the shots were so pretty and almost art house that it didn’t feel like they’d cheapened it or gone for the obvious adaption they so easily could have.
The trailer I first saw was this one:
youtube
I swear to you, the moment I saw the part where Elio says “listen, when the time comes, this is how he’ll say goodbye to us…Later”, I stopped being nervous. Completely. That scene still kills me.
I desperately tried to get tickets to the BFI screenings but they sold out so I could only see the movie opening night in the UK on 27 October but it was one of my favourite and one of the most memorable cinema experiences I’ve ever had, second to possibly seeing Titanic when I was a kid.
Yes, there are parts of the book that I wish were in there that sadly didn’t make the cut. I made a post about that ages ago. I have a tag on here that has all my ramblings under (HERE!) but I think I talked about that.
Does it have some flaws? Of course! There are a few editing moments that I thin would make non-novel readers unsure and some of the dialogue remains unexplained… unlike in the novel but I do wonder whether some of that is by choice to allow the viewers the ability to make up their own mind. I am definitely able to cast a critical eye but I am so fond of the movie as a whole and a novel!fan that I can’t help but be overly descriptive and gushy haha. It’s a marmite kind of thing for many and none of the characters are perfect in the book or movie but that’s what I love. They just happen to be fascinating and interesting to me.
SO NOW FOR THE RAMBLING……
The movie is different from the novel. There is about 1/3 of the novel in the movie. The entirety of Ghost Spots is gone. Most of San Clemente Syndrome is also gone. But yet the movie doesn’t suffer because of it. Luca has talked endlessly (and oh god i have wanted every single interview he’s done for this movie, I’m sure. I’m sure an admirer) about his decisions for the movie and one of the big ones is that he wanted the audience to grow with Elio. He didn’t want the novel’s reflective nature or the Proustian thing clouding the audience’s judgement of what was happening. He didn’t want voice overs or a narrator and, in my view, it is HANDS DOWN the best thing he did. You experience EVERY SINGLE MOMENT with Elio. From start to finish, you’re with him during his summer and you disappear. The movie is so immersive and beautiful for that, I’m so grateful to him.
PLEASE GO SEE THE MOVIE IN A CINEMA. That’s the best advice I can give. I hope it’s showing in the UK still where you are. Just take that time out and go see it. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is. From the second the credits start (and i swear, they’re some iconic bloody credits. The second I hear Hallelujah Junction *goosebumps*) it’s just the kind of movie that lifts you out of your life, drops you into Italy in the Summer and you spend every moment experiencing every second with these characters.
As for the comparison of the characters in the novel to those on screen. THIS IS WHERE I GET EMOTIONAL. Elio. Oh Elio Perlman is my sweetheart. The first time I read the book, I got him. He taught me so much about being brave. But novel!Elio is DRAMATIC as I’m sure you’re aware if you’ve read the book. He is hormonal and ridiculous and weird as hell. He’s so OTT and it the world’s most unreliable narrator so to play THAT right is just the most difficult task and it was what I was most frightened of. Let me tell you…. everything, EVERYTHING, that critics said about Timmy’s acting and his portrayal of Elio is spot on. It is one of my favourite piece of acting I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing. All of those Elio thoughts and feelings in the novel, all the internalisation and the intense thoughts he has… getting that across is a TASK and you read them all on Timmy’s face. I can’t even list them. It’s every damn scene. Moments of note are the dinner table scene where Oliver doesn’t show up. I even made a post of this because it stunned me to much (HERE!). The scene in Mr P’s office when Oliver’s showing off about his apricot knowledge and novel readers know that Elio is already enamoured and thinking filthy thoughts…. it’s ALL THERE on Timmy’s face. I could go on and on and on about him and how he quite frankly blew my mind but the main thing I keep coming back to is that movie!Elio is a JOY. He is an absolute delight to behold. Novel!Elio is so intense and because you’re inside his mind, it’s difficult to see him the way the world does. Movie!Elio is so lovely. He’s every bit as intense and kind of difficult and bold and hormonal as novel!Elio but he’s also light and fun and playful and SWEET. He’s EXTREMELY SWEET. There are some tiny little moments that are so effervescent and make me smile so much because Elio sparkles on screen. He dances and shimmies and lazes about, he touches everything in sight, he climbs Oliver like a tree, he smiles and argues and fusses and swoons and is just PERFECTION. I’m not going to go on and on because I’d spoil stuff…. the ending thought. The very final 2 seconds of the movie are forever etched into my brain.
As for the movie itself. It’s blissful. The cinematography is breathtaking. You feel part of the home and the landscape and Luca’s heart is in every frame. It’s like a painting. The music is wonderful and fills every scene with nostalgia and this sense that the Perlman’s are effortlessly cultured. The editing AHHHHH. GOD. There are some editing choices that I could kiss Walter Fasano for. It has an arthouse feel (MY FAVOURITE), and is SO LONG. It’s a very long movie and that was the biggest treat. There are directorial choices that I want to cuddle Luca for, namely how certain scenes are framed - especially the nosebleed scene and the entire MIDNIGHT sequence. That sequence is long and drawn out but constructed with little details so beautifully.
The other characters are so RICH and I was devastated to let them go when the movie ended. Annella is so much more than in the novel and I adore her. Marzia is WONDERFUL. Mafalda is every bit as sassy and great as the novel even if her part is smaller. But the VP is Mr Perlman. Reading the novel, anyone will remember and feel moved by his speech to Elio about life and love and letting yourself experience life: good and bad. The movie version moves me to tears from start to finish, every single time I see it. Mr Perlman is a GIFT in this movie. Every single character was so real and warm and the family moments are some of my favourites from movie.
Finally, the chemistry. Everyone has chemistry with EVERYONE. Notably, Elio and his parents. The level of affection in this movie is off the charts. Everyone hugs and kisses and cuddles and touches and it’s the most refreshing thing. But obviously the chemistry everyone wants is between Oliver and Elio and it’s so natural and almost unstaged (especially the midnight scenes) that I was speechless. They are wonderful together. It’s so clear that Timmy and Armie became friends. They shot the movie chronologically and much of the way the movie developed and occurred was how Timmy and Armie met and became friends. Watch any interview… haha. They are special on screen together.
My absolute FAVOURITE thing though is how the movie is so thin on dialogue. Compared to most movies, it is sparce and treats the audience intelligently because so many of the BIG moments are simple and delivered through nuanced acting (specifically by Timmy and notable by Armie in the goodbye portion of the movie). There’s no exposition, very little emotional talk as it is SHOWN and that is hands down the reason this movie resonated with me so well because that’s what I wanted from an adaption of the book. I didn’t want Elio TELLING us, I wanted to see it. And you do. VERY WELL.
So yeah, ESSAY DONE. I could ramble on and on. I truly ADORE the movie. It is up there with my all time favourites and I said after seeing it for the first time, that gratitude is the overwhelming thing I felt when I walked out of the cinema and after I’d picked my broken heart up off the floor…. my feelings haven’t changed.
If Luca sticks by his intention on sequels to follow Elio’s life, well I’m on board. I’d have NEVER said that last year. I’d have never wanted anyone to touch the novel or expand on the novel for a second. But I trust Luca. I’m pretty much a bloody disciple at this point hahaha. I fell head over heels for these characters and I don’t want to never see them again - especially Elio. Once you’ve seen Timmy’s Elio, I’d defy anyone to NOT want more.
So, in summary. THE MOVIE IS MAGICAL. It is different from the novel in some areas, in some it brings to life the pivotal moments in the first portion of the novel and although it misses out some of my most cherished portions of the novel, in my view, the movies doesn’t suffer for it. I hold them both dear for different reasons and they compliment one another in the loveliest way!

A starry ensemble sinks into sin in The Devil All The Time trailer
While the rest of Hollywood figures out how best to convey their feature slate to a public stranded in their homes, it’s business as usual at Netflix, where the direct-to-streaming business model has been serving them well as of late. They afforded us all an advance peek at Charlie Kaufman’s upcoming film just last week, and now today, they’re unveiling a trailer for another marquee title due next month.
Antonio Campos’ midcentury period piece The Devil All the Time gathers a stellar cast of today’s freshest talents for a multi-tiered story of sin and transgression in the rural hamlet of Knockemstiff, Ohio. Spanning decades from the end of World War Two to the beginning of the American invasion of Vietnam, the trailer mounts a broad canvas connecting a colorful network of damned, doomed souls.
Tom Holland leads the ensemble as Arvin Russell, an intense young man carrying a chip on his shoulder from a lifetime of abuse at the hands of his father the soldier (Bill Skarsgard). How his path crosses with everyone else’s remains a mystery, but the film will weave in a suspect preacher (Robert Pattinson), a young woman in his thrall (Eliza Scanlen), a smiley ingenue (Riley Keough), a photographer obsessed with her (Jason Clarke), and that doesn’t even account for the likes of Mia Wasikowska, Haley Bennett, or Sebastian Stan.
The trailer obfuscates more than it clarifies, with the flashes of a bloody murder scene, a crucified figure on a war-torn landscape, and a bucket of spiders poured directly onto a man’s face. Traces of a Gothic supernatural fit right in with a story seemingly about the hazards of religious absolutism and so-called good country manners, where ill intentions lurk below placid surfaces.
It’s been four years since the last feature from filmmaker Antonio Campos, the biopic Christine in which Rebecca Hall portrayed suicidal newswoman Christine Chubbuck (not to be confused with the one with Kate Lyn Sheil). That film, his previous effort Simon Killer, and this latest film all center on the morality of acts of violence, though his visions of ambiguity have never had so much star-power behind them. Brace for the sweatiest Southern accents a host of European actors can manage!
The Devil All the Time will come to Netflix in the UK and US on 16 September.
