Top 5 Desert Sites in Rajasthan
Tumblr media
Rajasthan’s desert expanse encompasses the trio of Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Jodhpur, collectively known as the desert triangle. These cities intricately entwine to form a desert circle, rendering Rajasthan the ‘most colorful desert in the world,’ steeped in cultural and historical significance.
Correctly, Rajasthan boasts desert sites, yet the misconception lies in the fact that only 2/5 of the state’s area is desert, specifically in the western region, spanning from Pushkar to Jaisalmer, falling under the Thar desert.
Explore Rajasthan with our recommended tour packages:
Rajasthan Desert Safari Tour
Rajasthan Heritage Tour
Rajasthan Wildlife Tour
Thar Desert
Tumblr media
Ranked as the 18th largest desert globally, the Thar Desert spans both India and Pakistan.
Within India’s domain, numerous sand dunes punctuate the landscape, some hosting wild vegetation. However, only about six of these dune areas qualify as authentic desert sites.
By ‘authentic,’ I refer to genuine desert sites in Rajasthan, featuring sand dunes towering between 20 to 50 meters. These locales also facilitate various desert tourism activities like Camel safari, Jeep safari, dune bashing, desert camping, and, in select places, even “Paragliding.”
Moreover, these deserts emerge as prime spots for capturing breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, offering perfect moments for your camera or mobile lens.
In this exploration of Rajasthan’s deserts, I unveil seven authentic desert sand dune sites, each accompanied by a plethora of activities for your enjoyment.
Top 6 Desert Sites in Rajasthan:
Desert in Jaisalmer:
Tumblr media
Jaisalmer, situated in the heart of the Thar desert, stands out as one of the finest cities. Here, expansive desert lands host two prominent desert dunes — Sam Sand Dunes and Khuri Sand Dunes.
Both Sam and Khuri boast sand dunes ranging from 30 to 60 meters, drawing travelers from across India, especially Gujarat.
Jaisalmer is not only renowned for its dunes but also for its captivating attractions, including the Golden Fort (Sonar Quila), Gadisar Lake, Amar Sagar, and the Jaisalmer War Museum.
Explore in detail:
Sam Sand Dunes
Khuri Sand Dunes
Desert in Jodhpur:
Tumblr media
Jodhpur, located 260 km east of Jaisalmer, holds its own as one of the prominent desert regions in the Thar Desert. Despite green vegetation dominating most of Jodhpur district, the Osian desert emerges as a desert marvel.
Osian, just 70 km from Jodhpur, is famous for its temples (Osian Mata Temple & a Jain temple) and the adjoining desert dunes. The Osian sand dunes attract travelers seeking an authentic desert safari experience, including Jeep Safari and Camel safari.
The secluded ambiance of Osian makes it an ideal choice for a tranquil night stay in desert camps, offering a less crowded alternative to Sam Sand Dunes in Jaisalmer.
How to reach Osian:
Public transport: Bus from Jodhpur
Private transport: Hire a taxi
The best time to visit Osian is around 3–4 pm, allowing for a visit to the Osian Mata Temple followed by camel or Jeep Safari.
Khimsar village:
Tumblr media
Situated in central Rajasthan, close to both Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, Nagaur, known for its cattle farms, unveils a hidden gem 45 km south — Khimsar village.
Khimsar boasts the Khimsar Desert Sand Dunes, a small town lying between Jaipur and Jodhpur. Notable attractions include the Khimsar Sand Dune Resort, offering a unique experience with village-themed huts and camel rides in the maintained dune area.
The flat desert area surrounding Khimsar teems with rich wildlife, featuring Desert Fox, Nigai, Blackbucks, Demoiselle Cranes, Partridges, and other species in wildlife sanctuaries.
How to reach Khimsar Sand Dunes:
Taxi from Jodhpur or Jaipur
Train to Nagaur railway station, 45 km north of the dunes.
Khimsar Sand Dunes offer a serene and less tourist-filled experience, making it an alluring destination.
Desert in Bikaner:
Tumblr media
Bikaner, a popular tourist city in the heart of the Thar desert, beckons with its Junagarh Palace, Karni Mata temple (home to over 25,000 rats), and the sprawling desert areas just beyond the city.
Bikaner’s deserts, although not towering, spread across a vast area, gaining fame for camel safaris and camping activities. Additionally, Bikaner hosts the Bikaner Camel Festival in January, a must-attend for enthusiasts.
How to reach Bikaner desert dunes:
Most desert camps and safari tours operate in Raisar area, a 15-minute drive from Bikaner city.
Public transport or Bikaner taxi service for a full-day exploration of Bikaner’s attractions, followed by an evening stay in the desert area.
Desert in Pushkar:
Tumblr media
Revered as one of the holiest cities for Hindus and a major tourist destination in Rajasthan, Pushkar is encircled by desert sands. While the sand dunes here may not rival the grandeur of Sam Sand Dunes in Jaisalmer, they offer an exceptional opportunity to explore rural villages in Rajasthan.
Activities in the Pushkar desert:
Camel rides
Camel cart exploration of Thar Desert villages
How to reach Pushkar desert dunes:
Nearest train station: Ajmer Junction (around 15 km away)
For those seeking a desert experience near Jaipur, Pushkar desert is an ideal option, just 140 km away.

Hunza Valley – All You Need to Know Before Travel
Tumblr media
In the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan, there lays a mountainous vale known as Hunza Valley. In the northern part of Gilgit, it is present at the bank of the river passing by. The elevation of this vale is approximately 2,438 meters. When it comes to its geography, the area consists of three regions: Upper (Gojal), Central, and Lower (Shinaki) Hunza. The main religion of the area was formerly Buddhism. For more than 900 years, it remained an independent region. From then, the ruling family of Ayesha (heavenly) formed on this place. John Biddulph in his book Tribes of the Hindoo Koosh write about it as; “The ruling family of Hunza is formerly called Ayesha (heavenly). The two states of Hunza and Nagar were formerly one, ruled by a branch of the Shahreis, the ruling family of Gilgit, whose seat of government was Nagar. First Muslim came to Hunza-Nagar Valley some 1000 years (At the time of Imam Islam Shah 30th Imam Ismaili Muslims). After the introduction of Islam to Gilgit, married a daughter of Trakhan of Gilgit, who bore him twin sons, named Moghlot and Girkis. From the former, the present ruling family of Nager’s descended. The twins are said to have shown hostility to one another from birth. Thereupon their father, unable to settle the question of succession, divided his state between them, giving Girkis the north/west, and to Moghlot the south/east bank of the river.”

Amazing Colorful Themed Cities of Rajasthan
Tumblr media
A state in northern India called Rajasthan borders Pakistan. Rajasthan stands out even in a country that already embraces color in a unique way. Due to its grand, brilliant, and colorful cities, as well as a long history of Maharajas and Rajput warriors, its name translates to "Land of Kings."
Rajasthan an interesting state to plan your vacation at. To plan your holiday, book Rajasthan tour packages from a trusted or reliable website
Fairytale palaces, regal forts, vibrant bazaars, and villages of lilac, mint, blue, pink, and yellow may be found in Rajasthan's cities.
The four major cities of Rajasthan are, however, by far the most well-known and eye-catching. These popular vacation spots are cities of four colours: pink, blue, white, and gold, and each colour has significance.
The Pink City "Jaipur"
Tumblr media
The state's capital and largest city, Jaipur, offers a genuine experience of regal Rajasthan. It is situated in the midst of a hilly desert region. It is a tangle of streets from the 15th and 16th centuries that haven't altered much through the years. Some of India's best jewelry stores selling gold and silver items may be found amidst the city's bustle. There are also several vibrant marketplaces and bazaars filled with saris, handmade carpets, spices, and fruit, as well as the odd snake charmer to add to the mood.
The City Palace, which serves as the current residence of the erstwhile royal family of India, is located in the centre of Jaipur. When the rose-colored walls sparkle as the sun rises and sets across the city, it is a beautiful complex of gardens and buildings that the city derives its name from.
The exquisite Amber Fort, which is located a few kilometers outside of the city on a hill, is, of course, Jaipur's main draw. The magnificent honey-gold fort, which is constructed from yellow, pink, and white marble, contains temples, courtyards, columns, and a staggering number of wonderful chambers where the Maharaja's numerous wives formerly resided.
Places to visit in Jaipur
Jaigarh Fort, Amer Fort, Nahargarh Fort, City Palace, Jal Mahal, Hawa Mahal, Galtaji Temple, Sisodia Rani Garden, Jantar Mantar, Albert Hall Museum, Bapu Bazaar,
Where to stay in Jaipur
I strongly advise booking a hotel near the Pink City, the city's historic core, so you can stroll about and explore everything.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the lovely haveli known as Rawla Mrignayani Palace. Walking around the Pink City market in Jaipur, eating delectable Rajasthani street cuisine, and purchasing vibrant handcrafted clothing are some of my favourite things to do.
Suggested Tour Itinerary:
Jaipur Sightseeing Tour
The Blue City "Jodhpur"
Tumblr media
The "Blue City," the second-largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, is a captivating cluster of blue homes that calms and enchants anybody who sees them.
Along the walls of the mediaeval walled city of Jodhpur, a sea of boxy indigo homes spans for more than 10 kilometres. Originally, a blue pigment coating on a home meant that a Brahmin—the caste system's priests—lived there. However, over time, non-Brahmins also started to identify themselves by the hue. Additionally, it is supposed to be insect-repellent.
Jodhpur, which is situated on the edge of the Thar Desert, is also known as the "Sun City" due to the excessive number of bright, sunny days that it experiences. Famous forts, palaces, mausoleums, gardens, lakes, and towers make it a popular destination for tourists. Since its foundation more than 500 years ago, the city has become well-known for a variety of attractions, including its thriving bazaars, magnificent furniture stores, delicious cuisine, and textile industry.
Places to visit in Jodhpur
Mehrangarh Fort,    Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhawan Palace,   Balsamand Lake, Kailana Lake,   Machiya Safari Park, Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park,  Chamunda Mata Temple, Jodhpur Government Museum,      Mahamandir Temple, Mandore Gardens, Bishnoi Village,
Where to stay in Jodhpur
You can book in Umaid Bhawan Palace, Raas, or Marugarh resort for an extremely luxurious “Maharaja” like experience.
Suggested Tour Itinerary:

Jaipur Ajmer Pushkar Jodhpur Tour
 Red City "Bikaner"
Tumblr media
Most people are familiar with Bikaner, but few are aware that it is primarily red unless they read about it here or elsewhere. Due to its ability to maintain its historic charm, the city is not as well-known as the other two listed above. There is a well-known rat temple in the city, and many worshippers travel from all across the nation to see it. Famous landmarks and attractions are painted red, giving the area a more red-hued appearance. The majority of the vanished havelis are crimson in colour.
You may explore the adjacent Gajner Sanctuary, Laxmi Niwas Palace, Junagarh Fort, and Lalgarh Palace while you're in Bikaner. But for me, exploring the old town of Bikaner was the nicest thing I did while I was there. Here you may see several old abandoned havelis that were constructed in the eighteenth century by wealthy merchants of Bikaner utilising red sandstone.
Places to visit in Bikaner
Junagarh Fort, Lalgarh Palace & Museum, Bhandasar Jain Temple, Laxmi Niwas Palace, Ganga Singh Museum, Rampuria Group Of Havelis, Desert Camel Safari, Gajner Palace & Lake, Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary
Where to stay in Bikaner
The best place to stay in Bikaner is Narendra Bhawan, which was once Bikaner’s Maharaja’s residence. You can also stay in the nearby Laxmi Niwas Palace or Lalgarh Palace.
Suggested Tour Itinerary:
Jaipur Bikaner Tour
Golden City “Jaisalmer”
Tumblr media
Situated in the heart of the Thar desert in Rajasthan, Jaisalmer city built on the foundation of yellow sandstone, justifies its tag as the 'Golden City' of India. The yellow stone monuments glittering in the sunlight is indeed a sight to behold. Jaisalmer offers many places to visit, ranging from yellowed forts to golden palaces and even deserted towns! The unique beauty of the place represented in the contrasting hues of gold against vivid shades of blue and green makes Jaisalmer an unforgettable experience.
Built by the Bahti Rajputs, the town of Jaisalmer showcases interesting architecture, intricately carved sculptures and strategically built forts. Here is a list of places to visit in Jaisalmer, covering the major tourist attractions in the region.
The major reason that tourists visit the golden city of Jaipur is to take part in a camel trek through nearby parts of the Thar Desert. A guide will take you for a day to explore, camp and even to take part in the Rajasthan desert festival where tourists can compete in camel races and sport extravagantly colourful costumes.
Where to stay in Jaisalmer
For an unforgettable experience, you can stay in the middle of the desert in Suryagarh Palace or stay in one of the hotels inside the fort such as Killa Bhawan.
The White City “Udaipur”
Tumblr media
Because it is not as vibrant as pink, gold, or blue, the beautiful white city of Udaipur is occasionally disregarded. However, it is said to as "the most romantic site on the Indian subcontinent" because of its luscious palaces that float on a sparkling lake. The marble-colored City Palace, which appears to be floating in the middle of the shimmering blue waters of Lake Pichola, is the most charming aspect of this particularly lovely white city. The palace, which is now a magnificent hotel but was originally constructed in the 16th century as a Maharana's "summer retreat," is even more alluring because it can only be reached by boat. The city lights at night bounce off the ice-white towering structures and reflect into the ocean.
A rickshaw ride through this brilliant white city is the finest way to see it, and the driver will make several stops along the route.
Best Places to Visit in Udaipur:
Udaipur City Palace, Lake Palace, Jagmandir, Jagdish Temple, Saheliyon Ki Bari, Sajjangarh Palace, Fateh Sagar Lake, Lake Pichola, Udaisagar Lake, Jaisamand Lake, Rajsamand Lake, Jiyan Sagar, Doodh Talai
Where to stay in Udaipur
For a once in a lifetime experience, stay on a place in the middle of the lake – Taj Lake Palace. Or you can also consider Leela Palace, Amet Haveli, or Jaiwana Haveli.
