because 4x01 happened and i had feelings about it. the therapy stuff is taken directly from my own counselling sessions. i might not have gone through a tsunami and a truck bombing, but i’ve seen some shit lol. ANYWAY. i hope y’all like this.
for @capseycartwright who always deserves the best buck content and quality sassy eddie <3
need help (but can you help me? [ao3 link] buck, buck/eddie, hurt/comfort, therapy
Eddie leaned against the doorjamb to his bathroom, arms folded across his chest. “I hear you’re cheating on me with a Covid crush?”
Buck snorted. “You’ve been talking to Chim.”
“More like had to listen to him,” Eddie corrected. He met Buck’s eyes through the mirror.
“You know I would never—”
“I know, Buck,” Eddie said quickly. He straightened up, came to stand next to Buck at the basin. Buck looked to the left, lips quirking up. Before he could say anything, Eddie leaned in, resting his head on Buck’s shoulder, their eyes meeting in the mirror again. “I trust you.”
Fingers curling around the edge of the basin, Buck sighed. “I should just tell them.”
Eddie kissed Buck’s neck. “You don’t owe anybody anything.”
Silence lapsed between them.
“When you’re ready to tell people, you will,” Eddie said, sliding a hand up Buck’s back, scratching through his hair and then pulled back. “Breakfast in half an hour. Chris is already up.”
“Fuck you,” Buck said with a laugh.
Eddie blew him a kiss and tapped the doorframe on his way out.
_________
Buck wasn’t keeping it a secret deliberately.
Quarantine was difficult. It wasn’t as bad for him as it was for a lot of people given that he was still able to work, but he hadn’t been alone since the quarantine had started. It had started to get too much for him to handle around the second month.
“I used to think I was lonely,” he said, leaning on his desk.
Lisa nodded, sitting back in her chair. “And now?”
“I havent been for a while,” he said. “But not because of quarantine. That’s just made me realize I love my workmates but living with them has been difficult.”
“You’re ready for them to go home.”
Buck huffed a short laugh. “Yeah, I am. Well. I’m sad Eddie’s gone, but I know why he had to.”
Lisa’s face remained impassive. It was one of the reasons Buck liked her. “Do you miss him?”
Missed was an understatement. Though Hen and Eddie had gone home and Buck had been glad to have his apartment mostly to himself, that didn’t stop him missing Eddie like a phantom limb. It had been difficult without Chris around, moreso for Eddie, but Buck had missed him too. That would change now, as long as they were careful and took precautions, and Buck wanted to go back to having Eddie and Chris to himself—without Chm around. “I just wish Chim would leave.”
“Hmm,” Lisa said.
“Not because I’m sick of him,” Buck said. “It’s just hard when he’s here. I feel like I can’t be myself.”
Lisa stared at him. “You can with Eddie?”
“Yeah,” Buck said. “I can.”
“Then start with that,” Lisa said. “Keeping it a secret is taxing on you, and I can imagine on Eddie, but if the two of you have decided it works for you, then only you get to decide when you tell your friends and family.”
“I know.” Buck blew out a slow breath. “Thanks, Lisa.”
“It’s what I’m here for, Buck,” she said with a smile. “However, that’s the end of the session and I have to go. If you need anything, text me, alright?”
Buck nodded, thumb hovering over the mousepad. “I will. Thanks again.”
The sign off was always awkward over Zoom, but Buck hadn’t dealt well with face to face sessions. When he closed his laptop, he sat back in his chair, hearing Maddie’s laugh through the speakers of Chim’s laptop. Great. Rolling his eyes, Buck cast a quick eye at the clock. Not long and they had to be at work.
_________
“Well,” Eddie said. “At least it’s not a tsunami.”
Buck gave him a look. “Are you kidding me?”
Eddie was smiling, the dick, and Buck elbowed him. “Ow,” he said through a laugh. Sobering quickly, he reached out, squeezed Buck’s arm as best he was able in their gear. “It’ll be alright.”
“I can’t do it again, Eddie.”
Eddie turned. “Buck, look at me.”
Buck winced but did as asked. They didn’t have long before they’d be on the roof.
“I’ve got you, hear me? No matter what, you’re not on your own this time.”
I wasn’t before, Buck didn’t say. “Okay.”
“You hearing me?”
“Yes, Eddie, I got you.”
Eddie smirked. “Don’t sass me, Buckley.”
“I’ll do whatever Ilike,” Buck said mulishly, but he couldn’t stop the smile from forming. “Thanks, Eddie.”
“Anytime,” Eddie said, dropping his voice. “Now let’s get this done, alright?”
_____________________
Buck massaged his temples. “It was a disaster. Literally.”
“It was,” Lisa agreed.
“With everything that went on, it reminded me of the tsunami.”
Lisa nodded sympathetically. “That must have been difficult.”
It took Buck a minute to find his voice. “I had a job to do this time as well and I didn’t have Chris to look out for.” When he realised Lisa looked ready to speak, Buck powered on. “Not that I resented looking out for Chris. I know—you know how I feel about that and that I’ll probably always regret it, but I had Eddie this time. I had—a job and someone to help me.”
“Okay,” Lisa said. It wasn’t a dismissal, and Buck nodded. “I know how much trust you have in Eddie, Buck. I just wonder how much you have in yourself.”
“What do you mean?”
“We’ve talked about the truck bombing, the tsunami. We’ve talked about the blood clots and the lawsuit,” and Buck winces at the reminder, “and throughout all of that you mention everything you’ve done wrong.”
Buck frowned. “Yeah?”
“What about the things you did right?”
There was a long silence.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“I want you to do something for me, okay?”
Buck waited for her to finish, not knowing how to answer.
“Before you next call me, I want you to write down five things you’ve done right in the time you’ve been working. I would prefer it to be related to those incidents we discussed, but I will take other things as well.”
“I—” Buck started.
“If you can’t, it’s okay. I just want you to try.”
“Okay,” Buck said eventually. “I’ll try.”
_____________________
Maddie narrowed her eyes. “So when do I get hear about it?”
“Never,” Buck said, not having to ask what she meant. “It’s private, Mads.”
“Even from me?” Maddie sounded hurt. Buck hated himself just a little but he was taking to heart the things Lisa told him; he and Eddie were the only ones with the right to tell people that they were in a relationship, nobody else could decide for them.
Reaching out, he touched the screen, wishing he could hold her hand. “It’s not what you think, I promise you that. When I’m ready to tell you, I will.”
There was a long pause, but Maddie shut off the call and she didn’t look annoyed. “Okay. I am here if you need me.”
“I know,” Buck said. He missed his sister terribly, but was determined to make Chim leave before he met her himself. . “I wish I could convince Chim to come home.”
Maddie’s face shifted. She looked sad and Buck wished he could change that too. “I’m just as scared as he is. I shouldn’t be doing this alone.”
“Want me to kick his ass?”
Shaking her head, Maddie at least let out a little laugh, so Buck counted it as a win. “No.”
“Maybe this,” Buck said, waving a hand behind him to encompass everything that had happened. “Will shake him up. He hasn’t come home yet.”
“He hasn’t?” Maddie frowned. “Didn’t he finish work with you?”
“I think Hen took him out,” Buck said. “Maybe she’s doing the yelling for you.”
There was the trace of a smile on her face. “I just want him want this as much as I do.”
“Hey,”Buck said, leaning forward. “If there’s one thing I do know about Chim right now, it’s that he’s desperate to be a dad with you, Mads. He’s been going through all my parenting books while we’ve been in lockdown.”
Maddie paused. “Why do you have parenting books?”
“For Chris,” Buck said, rolling his eyes. “Stop it. They were so i could help Eddie.”
“Oh,” Maddie said, and there was the sister he knew and loved so much. “If it’s for Eddie.”
“I’m going now,” Buck said, waving a hand. “Go do whatever it is you and Albert do.”
Maddie laughed and cut off the call.

“It’s my therapist,” Buck said.
Eddie looked up from cooking dinner. “What?”
“The person I’m calling.”
Eddie didn’t say anything for a long time. Buck worried it was because he was mad, but realised he was just turning off the burner. “Come here.”
Buck went, standing awkwardly next to Eddie, until Eddie reached up, wrapping his arms around Buck’s shoulders. Like a string had been cut, Buck fell against him, sorry when Eddie had to adjust his stance or send them toppling. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”
“You didn’t have to,” Eddie assured him, ghosting a kiss across his head. “I’m proud of you.”
“For seeing a therapist?” Buck scoffed.
Eddie pulled back, touching a hand to Buck’s face. “For telling me. I know it’s not an easy thing to do.”
Buck’s breathing was shaky, he could hear it, and he wanted to look anywhere but at Eddie’s face, but he couldn’t tear his eyes away. “I wanted to make everything less messed up.”
“You’re not messed up,” Eddie snapped, then sighed. “I’m sorry. You might feel that way, but I don’t see messed up.”
“What do you see?”
“I see the man I love hurting and struggling.”
The words came out so easily that Buck was almost physically struck by them. “Eddie.”
“I love you,” Eddie said quietly. Buck knew what a gift it was to be loved by someone like Eddie. “I’m behind you no matter what.”
“I know,” Buck said, just as quiet. “I love you too. I just needed—quarantine got to me and I know it did to you—”
“You’re allowed to feel things too. It’s not a competition.”
Buck shrugged. “I know you had Chris.”
“And you had Maddie and me.”
“You were there.”
Eddie nodded, but made a face. “Not in the way we both wanted. It killed me not to be able to touch you or hold you in the way I’m used to.”
“Same.” Buck leaned in, pressed a soft kiss to Eddie’s mouth. “We’re together now.”
“Yeah, we are,” Eddie said, the smile on his face as brilliant as Buck felt. “Come on. Dinner’ll be ready soon and then you can challenge Chris to a lego battle.”
Buck snorted. “I’ll lose. I always do.”
“The joy of being a father,” Eddie said.
Again, Buck was struck by the words, and thought of Maddie. “I am, huh?”
Turning back to the stove, Eddie looked over his shoulder. “You will be.”
It sounded like a hell of a promise.
The next time Buck spoke to Lisa, he was sure he would have those five things she wanted. But if he didn’t, he could talk about Eddie. About Chris, his family, the future. He had something to look forward to and that made everything look brighter.

“Son of a bitch!” Dean’s voice echoed throughout the halls of the Bunker. Y/N just smiled softly, shaking her head, and returned to her research. The state of the world was part chaos, part terror as a new virus spread far and wide, creating a worldwide pandemic, the likes of which have not been seen in a century. The medical community was calling it COVID-19, but the Winchesters weren’t convinced it was what they were saying it was. The way it spread screamed supernatural to them.
They had been hunkered down in the Bunker for two weeks, but even Y/N noticed they were running low on the staples and Sam would only tolerate frozen vegetables for so long. She also needed to refill her prescriptions if they were going to quarantine themselves for the foreseeable future. She’d had the foresight to call in a three month supply earlier in the week and just got the text this morning that they were ready for pick up.
Y/N was diagnosed in her mid-twenties with Multiple Sclerosis. She had good days and bad days. Growing up in a hunting family made things more difficult for her but she kept going despite the tingling, the weakness, and the numbness she had been experiencing. However, when she realized she was more of a liability than an asset, Y/N stepped down and became the go-to for information, quickly becoming an expert in most things in regards to the Lore. The guilt of not being able to contribute physically nearly crippled her when two of her brothers were killed on a hunt. Her mother was long gone, and now it was just her and her dad left. She had no other choice and called some other hunters, and old family friends; the Winchesters.
Sam and Dean did not hesitate to lend their assistance, and with their help, they were able to neutralize the pack of wolves that had taken part of her family. The Winchesters invited her and her dad to stay with them in the Bunker permanently, and she accepted, not having much left. Her dad came and went, continuing to hunt either solo, or with others. It wasn’t long after she moved in that she and Dean married, unable to deny their feelings any longer.
“Sammy! We need to make a supply run,” Dean announced, walking into the library, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Hey, honey. How are you feeling today?”
“Pretty good today, Winchester.” She smiled up at her husband. “I already started a list.”
“You’re the best. How’d I get so damn lucky?” Dean pressed a kiss to her lips.
“I’m a sucker for that car of yours,” she giggled, picking up her notebook and pen to finish the list.
“It’s always the car,” Dean smiled, shaking his head.
As Y/N finished the list, her left hand started shaking, her wedding band shining in the brightly lit room. Her mind drifted back to the day she and Dean exchanged vows.
Y/N slipped the circle of silver over Dean’s ring finger, her damp eyes finding his. His verdant irises widened at the sensation he felt when she placed the ring on his finger. He brushed it off as nerves, combined with butterflies, but after a few pictures, and a few drinks, the sensation wasn’t lessening. If anything, it got stronger.
“Sam, what the hell? I think my ring is cursed!” Dean exclaimed in a hushed voice, cornering his brother in the kitchen. Dean ripped the ring off his finger and the sensation went away. He shoved the ring at his brother. “Go get Y/N’s ring and fix this!”
“Dean, the rings aren’t cursed,” Sam laughed, opening another beer.
“It’s giving me a weird feeling man. Like it’s, and this is gonna sound weird, even for me, but I think it’s beating,” Dean whispered the last word, looking expectantly at his brother, waiting for a response, an explanation, anything.
“That’s because it is, Dean,” Sam shrugged, taking a long sip off his beer.
“What the hell?” Dean said, looking down at the ring in his hand. Tentatively, he turned it over, inspecting it closely, seeing nothing but the heartbeats engraved in the silver, before placing it back on his finger. There it was...ba boom, ba boom, ba boom, just slightly faster than his own.
“There you are,” Y/N smiled as she entered the kitchen, gliding over to Dean to wrap her arms about his middle. “I love you, husband.”
“I love you, too, wife,” Dean echoed, kissing her soundly.
Making his exit, Sam glanced over his shoulder at the bride and groom, a smile playing at his lips. He could relax a little for now; his brother was happy.
“Hey, honey, um, this is gonna sound weird, but, I think my ring is … beating,” Dean swallowed thickly. It still sounded stupid even as the words left his lips.
“Mine, too, babe,” Y/N told him. The perplexed look on Dean’s face prompted her to continue. “You know how I always worry about you on a hunt? When you don’t answer, or your phone’s dead, or smashed to bits by yet another monster? I brought the idea to Sam and we spelled the rings. Mine reflects your heartbeat, and yours, mine. This way, I’ll always know you’re okay.”
“So, it’s not my imagination. I was beginning to think I’d lost my damn mind!” Dean revealed, looking relieved at the information Y/N had supplied. He glanced down at the simple ring, feeling her steady heartbeat inside of it. He smiled. “You’ll always be with me even when we’re apart. I kinda love this.”
“I kinda love it, too, Dean. it makes me feel better knowing I can always feel you right here.” She held up her ring, wiggling her finger, smiling as it caught the light.
“Babe!” Y/N called out, waving the list in the air.
“Got it!” Dean dodged around the table, snatching the slip of paper from her fingers, slowing only enough to place a kiss to the top of her head. He scanned the list as he headed toward the hall leading to the garage. “Really?”
“Yes, really!” Y/N laughed in response, knowing he hit the part of the list with the tampons and pads on it. “The joys of being married, babe!”
“This part still sucks ass!” he groaned. “Sammy, get a move on!”
Y/N grabbed her cane, slowly making her way to the kitchen. She was slightly worried as several times while they’d been gone, did the heartbeat in her ring pick up, like Dean was filled with adrenaline. Things must be getting worse out there, and she wanted to be able to see Dean as soon as he was home, to ensure herself that he was okay. As good as she was with research and theoretical information, she really was a tangible person and knew the worry wouldn’t ease until she had her arms wrapped firmly around him.
She heard Baby’s engine and doors before she heard Sam or Dean. She waited patiently in the kitchen as Sam came in, arms loaded down with bags. “How was it?” Y/N looked up at Sam for confirmation, knowing Dean tended to sugarcoat information in an effort to protect her. She didn’t need protecting, she just needed the truth.
“It’s not great. We had to drive over to Smithville to get everything we needed. It’s getting worse by the hour, Y/N,” Sam replied solemnly. “I think this is the last trip we’re making together. It’ll be better if I go alone. If I get sick, I can isolate myself. If you or Dean get sick, I don't know...” Sam stopped, taking a moment.
“Sam, I’m sure you both took the necessary precautions. Dean’s a germaphobe by nature so I’m sure he is out there now, sanitizing his Baby already. He wore a mask, didn’t he? And gloves?”
“He sure did. Got some strange looks and things got a little dicey at the liquor store, and the drugstore. I don’t know why people are still hoarding toilet paper and feminine hygiene products,” Sam said, a look of disbelief on his face.
“It’s actually a psychological response to minimize risk. It’s an emotional contagion as well, so when it starts happening in one part of the country, that news spreads and it drives people, either by fear, anxiety, or panic, into doing the same thing. I get the toilet paper, since that is a need everyone has, but tampons, really? I don't know why I’m surprised by anything at this point,” Y/N chuckled a bit as she reached for one of the bags to help Sam.
“No!” Sam pulled the bags back from her. “Sorry. It’s just, um, can you please go wait in the library until I get all of this unpacked and sanitized? Please?”
“Yes, I can. Thank you, Sam. I appreciate you and am thankful for your concern,” Y/N smiled as she rose to her feet and made her way down the hall. She loved Sam as more than just a brother and her best friend. He had become her physical therapist of sorts, designing different workouts for her to keep her body strong when the MS wanted to take it from her. Sam had also done extensive research on different dietary and nutrition plans that people with MS have had success with combating their symptoms. Dean was her emotional rock, while Sam became the physical one. She lowered herself into one of the recliners and picked up a book. She’d had enough research for the day and some Harry Potter was what she needed to take her mind off things.
Did you like it? The nicest thing you can do for a writer is reblog their work and tell them, and others, how much you like it!

Light After Dark: Chapter Eleven
Summary: Brooke Harris was trying her best to be grateful. As the world tackled the COVID-19 pandemic, she was healthy and safe and so was the rest of her family, but her dreams had very quickly been crushed by the economic fallout. Trapped on the quaint island of Jersey with nothing, but free time to wallow in her mistakes, Brooke’s mental health was taking a hit, but when she collides with a handsome stranger she starts to realize that the future might not be so bleak and there might still be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Pairing: Henry Cavill x OFC
______________
June. 14. 2020
Henry: Are you busy this evening?
Me: I'm never busy these days
Henry: That's not true. Sometimes you have plans with your family
Me: Fair point, but only because I never have a better offer 😉
Henry: Well, would you be interested in joining me for dinner tonight?
Me: Absolutely 😊
Henry: Great, I'll pick you up at six!
A quick glance at the clock told me that it was almost four now so I dragged myself off the couch and headed to the bathroom to shower and get myself date ready.
****
I walked into the kitchen at about quarter to six where Molly was doing some homework and Cassie was starting on dinner.
"Where are mum and dad?"
Cassie glanced up from the pot she was stirring.
"Just at the shop, picking up a few things we're low on," She informed me. "You look nice, any plans?"
The children took no time at all to rat us out at the party. It took less than fifteen minutes for one of them to spill the beans and force us into an awkward explanation in front of the group. The general consensus was that everyone was pleased for us though and it was nice to not have to hide anything.
"I'm going for dinner with Henry," I admitted. "He's picking me up in a few minutes."
"Ooh, very nice," She grinned. "Where are you going?"
"I don't know. Hopefully not a restaurant, I don't really feel comfortable with that yet even though I'm sure they're all taking precautions. I'll probably suggest we get takeaway and eat in the car or something."
"In the car?" Cassie laughed. "Surely on an island like this you could find somewhere more romantic than his car!"
"That's true," I smiled. "Anyway, I don't know what he has planned so we'll have to wait and see."
"Well, I'm very happy for you, Brooke."
I wrinkled my nose despite the smile on my face.
"Not necessarily much to be happy for at the moment, we're just....friends that kiss."
"Oh please," She rolled her eyes. "You're a couple. He's your boyfriend. You two just don't want to admit it."
I was about to argue, but my phone buzzed in my hand and a quick glance told me that it was Henry and he was outside.
"I have to go," I told her. "But he's not my boyfriend so don't go spreading any rumours."
"Oops, I already called TMZ."
I stuck out my tongue as she laughed at her own joke before grabbing my purse and heading for the door.
As soon as I got outside, my jaw dropped. The car sitting in our driveway probably cost more than my parent's house or at least came pretty close. He had the window rolled down and resting his elbow on the frame, leaning out with his sunglasses on in a way that was effortlessly sexy.
Tumblr media
"Is this your car?!" I asked, still shocked by the sight.
"No, I stole it," He smirked. "Of course it's mine."
"Oh hush," I rolled my eyes. "It could belong to your dad or something."
"To be honest, it may as well. I can't take it off Jersey so he drives it more than I do."
A sly grin onto my face.
"Can I drive it?"
Henry chuckled, but shook his head.
"Nice try, but no."
"Why not?"
"Do you even have a license?"
I scoffed indignantly.
"Of course I do," I informed him. "I'm a great driver."
"I'm sure you are," He smirked. "But this isn't just any car."
I rolled my eyes, but relented.
"Alright, fine. If I'm not special enough to drive your car then I understand."
I pouted dramatically, but again, Henry just chuckled.
"Get in," He nodded his head to the passenger side. "And maybe I'll let you drive on the way home."
"Yay!" I squealed, clapping my hands as I hurried around the front of the car and got in. "Does it go really fast?"
Henry shot me a look as he reversed off the driveway.
"Questions like that will turn that maybe into a firm no."
"Fine, fine," I held up my hands in defeat. "I'll be careful. It is a great car though."
"I bought it with my first big pay cheque," He grinned proudly. "I was looking at something a little more reasonable, but my dad thought I should splash out and treat myself."
"He probably knew he'd be the one driving it most of the time," I smiled, earning a chuckle and a nod from Henry.
"You are probably right," He admitted. "So, would you like to know the plan for the evening?"
"Absolutely," I shifted slightly in my seat so I was facing him a bit more. "We're not going to a restaurant, are we? I don't want to ruin your plans, but I don't feel super comfortable with that yet."
"No, no restaurant," Henry assured me. "We're having a picnic."
"A picnic?" I smiled. "That's so romantic."
Henry glanced over quickly to shoot me a wink before turning his eyes back to the road.
"I do my best."
****
Tumblr media
He drove us through the small little city down towards a beach, but not the same as the one we were at before. Most of the beach dwellers had gone home for the day as it was now getting into the evening so even though it was still warm and sunny, the beach wasn't at all crowded. Henry grabbed an authentic picnic basket and blanket from the boot of the car and slipped his hand in mine before leading us towards the sand. Once we'd found a nice little spot, he laid out the blanket and gestured for me to sit down.
"This is so cute," I gushed. "What a great idea!"
"I thought you might like it," He smiled, settling down next to me on the blanket. "It's safer than going out to eat and gives us more privacy than using either of our gardens."
"Oh god," I rolled my eyes. "My family would be spying out the window the entire time. Cassie and my mum have barely stopped talking about us since your family left the other day."
Henry laughed, shaking his head.
"My family have been a bit more subtle," He informed me. "But I did get a call from Charlie this morning asking about you so the news has obviously made it's way around already."
"And what did you tell him?"
I wasn't going to press the issue and make him tell me the details of a private conversation, but curiosity got the best of me and I couldn't help but ask.
"Oh, you know," Henry shrugged. "I told him that you're a baker and you make me delicious things to eat so I'm letting you hang around for now. And, of course, that you're hot so that's a bonus too."
I pulled a face and swatted his leg.
"You're so rude!"
"I'm kidding," He chuckled despite the pout that slid onto my face. "I told him that you're talented, smart, funny and gorgeous and that you've been a wonderful ray of sunshine to brighten my little lockdown life."
“Wow," I smiled, my cheeks burning from the unexpected compliments. "That's actually really sweet."
I could have sworn Henry's own cheeks looked a shade redder, but he simply shrugged.
"It's all true."
"Well, I don't want to get too cheesy, but I feel the same," I admitted. "I was feeling pretty hopeless when I first got here, but you've made my time here much more enjoyable than I anticipated it would be."
"I'm glad I could help," He smiled as I leaned against his shoulder.
He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me close, using his hand to gently tilt my face towards his before pressing his lips against mine. It was a soft, sweet kiss and despite the fact that it still seemed very surreal that our relationship reached this point, my heart was ready to burst out of my chest.  He was so tender for such a big, tough looking man and I appreciated the care and gentleness he showed in every romantic moment we'd shared so far.
I reluctantly pulled away as Henry's stomach growled rather loudly.
"Hungry, are you?" I giggled. "What did you make for dinner?"
"I didn't make it," He admitted, looking a little sheepish. "I picked it up from a local restaurant. I got a couple of sandwiches, crisps and fruit salad for dessert. They had cakes, but I thought it might ruin the mood if they're not up to your standard."
I leaned back, laughing as he unpacked the meal.
"It wouldn't have ruined the mood, I'm not a snob," I assured him. "It's nice to eat other people's baking sometimes, getting to reap the benefits without doing all the work."
"I'll remember that for next time," He smiled. "But I didn't want to chance it on our first date."
An ear to ear grin slid onto my face at that comment.
"Is that what this is? Our first date?"
"Was that not clear?" Henry smirked at me and I shrugged as he handed me a can. "How about a toast to honour the occasion?"
I glanced down at the can and saw it was wine as he pulled out a beer for himself.
"To us," I smiled, cracking open the can. "To light growing in dark places."
"Very poetic," Henry teased, gently knocking his can against mine. "To us."
I sipped my drink before investigating the can a bit closer.
"Were they sold out of champagne?"
Henry chuckled as he passed me one of the sandwiches and a napkin.
"No, but I didn't want to get too carried away since I'll have to drive us home," He informed me. "Why? Do most of your first dates start with champagne?"
"Oh yes, definitely. In fact, I normally insist on it," I laughed, my words filled with sarcasm. Henry playfully rolled his eyes as I took a bite of my sandwich, swallowing before I elaborated. "I'm just kidding. Honestly, I haven't really dated in a long time."
Henry raised an eyebrow, looking unconvinced.
"No? I'm surprised you're not fighting men off left and right."
"Definitely not," I smiled, shaking my head. "But I don't really put myself out there to give them the chance. My last relationship ended a few years ago and I dated a little after that, but I find the whole process quite tedious."
"Well, I hope you haven't found it tedious with me!"
"No, no, of course not," I rushed to assure him. "But it was different with us. We met and just enjoyed spending time together until it became more. After my ex and I broke up a couple of years ago, I realized that these days it's mostly dating apps and going out with someone you've only seen a picture of and I just can't be bothered with that. It seems so awkward."
"Fair enough," Henry nodded. "Why did you and your ex break up? If you don't mind me asking."
"No, not at all," I smiled. "He's gay. He was raised in a super religious family so it took him a long time to come to terms with it so we were together for almost two years before he finally decided he couldn't hide it anymore."
"That must have been a shock.."
"It was," I admitted. "It was a pretty hard time, but we're still good friends now and I'm glad he's comfortable being who he really is. I was upset at the time, but after I calmed down I realized how hard it was for him. Besides, it wasn't like he didn't love me, he just loved me in a different way."
"That's very understanding of you," Henry observed. "A lot of people would probably be more resentful."
"Probably," I shrugged. "But he can't change who he is so there's no point in holding a grudge. What about you? Any vengeful exes I should be aware of?"
"No, none of them are vengeful," He laughed. "Most of my break-ups were pretty amicable. I actually worked with my most recent ex, Lucy, on the Witcher. She's a stunt woman so our paths have crossed a few times and there's no bad blood there."
"That's good," I smiled. "I think it's nice when people still get along after a split. Obviously you cared for that person at one point so I always think it's such a shame when relationships deteriorate to the point where you can't even stand to be in the same room as the other person."
"I agree," Henry nodded. "Fortunately, most people I've dated have shared that outlook. I wouldn't say that I'm friends with any of them, but I don't think many would cross the street to avoid me."
"Good," I sipped my wine. "I find men who leave a trail of broken hearts behind them very off putting. I'm too old to chase around after a player."
"A player?" Henry chuckled. "That sounds like something I no longer have the energy to be so we're on the same page there."
I was already fairly certain that was true. I hadn't seen much evidence of Henry playing games or stringing me along as was so common in dating these days from both men and woman, but it was always good to have a bit of reassurance. While some people shied away from discussing their previous relationships, I'd always found being open and honest about it prevented any conflict or surprises later on.
****
We continued talking chatting as we ate our dinner and had just settled on Henry's life growing up on the island as we finished.
"So," I started, turning to face him. "If we were here and none of this virus stuff was happening, what would be your favourite places that you would have to show me?"
"Hmm, that's a good question," Henry pondered. "I definitely would have taken you to that look out point we went to, but I also would have made sure we visited Durrell Zoo."
"Oh, is that the one you do charity work for?"
Henry smirked, shaking his head.
"You need to stop googling me."
"Hey!" I protested. "You told me that yourself!"
"Did I?" He didn't seem convinced, but it was the truth. "Well, yes, it is. They're a great organization, but I also have fond memories of going there when I was a boy so it's nice to share it with other people."
"That's really sweet," I smiled. "Is it your favourite place on the island?"
"It's definitely one of them," He nodded. "But I'd also take you there if it was open."
He pointed into the distance and I followed his finger with my gaze.
"Is that a castle?" I asked, shielding my eyes from the sun to get a better look.
"It is," He smiled. "Gorey Castle or lé Vièr Châté. It was built in 1212 and was used for the defence of the island. It's really interesting, there's lots of little towers and secret rooms. And just thinking that it's been there for over eight hundred years makes it quite an experience."
"That's really cool," I agreed. "So many people must have wandered through there over the years, even before it was just used as a historical monument."
"Exactly," Henry nodded. "It's fascinating! The stories those walls could tell if they could speak would be enthralling."
Henry's eyes shined with intrigue at the thought and I couldn't help, but smile at the sight.
"You like history, don't you?"
"I do," He admitted, looking somewhat sheepish. "I find it really interesting just thinking about everything that's happened and how it's created and shaped the world we know today."
"It is interesting," I agreed. "You must have loved working on the Tudors."
"I did!" Henry smiled. "I would love to do more period pieces if the opportunity arose. There's plenty of people whose stories deserve to be told."
"It's really cool that you're so passionate about it," I mused. "Not to be rude, but I don't think many people expect someone who looks like you to be interested in things that are sometimes considered to be nerdy or uncool. It's refreshing."
"People tell me that a lot," He chuckled. "But I am who I am. I love video games, fantasy novels and history. Just because I also enjoy staying in shape and exercising and because I have to look a certain way for some roles, that doesn't change."
"And it shouldn't," I insisted. "I think that people just always need to fit everyone into one specific box, but that isn't realistic. Nerds can be hot too."
Henry tossed his head back laughing before nodding in agreement.
"Yes, yes they can," He grinned, filling me with a kind of pride at being the one to make him look so happy. "Speaking of staying in shape, was yoga something that came naturally to you or have you just become more flexible over time?"
I tilted my head questioningly, wondering where his query came from until he pointed at my legs. At some point in our conversation I'd crossed my legs and then pulled my feet up on top of my knees. The stretch felt nice and I hadn't even thought that to some people it was an unusual way to sit.
"Oh, I definitely became more flexible over time," I informed him. "I was so stiff when I first started, I couldn't even touch my toes. It's amazing how fast your body adjusts though. Now the stretches that used to be quite a strain are just naturally comfortable."
"I really should try it," Henry sighed. "I may be strong, but I am not flexible."
My face lit up as I got an idea.
"Do you want to try it? I'm not a teacher or anything, but I could show you a few moves!"
Henry hesitated at first, but then nodded.
"Alright, yeah," He agreed. "Let's give it a go."
"Great!" I smiled, pushing myself up to my feet. "Why don't you watch me the first time and then do it with me after?"
"Sure," Henry agreed, looking amused by my enthusiasm.
"Okay, I'll keep it super simple."
I moved off the blanket and onto the sand, standing so he got a sideways view. I reached my arms up above my head, enjoying the stretch before slowly bringing my hands down to the sand in front of me letting my weight fall forward to stretch my back. After pausing there for a moment, I stretched back up once more before leaning back down and planting my hands in the sand. I stepped my feet back until I was in downward facing dog.
"Following along so far?"
I turned my head to the side as I rocked my feet back and forth a bit to see Henry's reaction.
"I am," He nodded with a smirk. "But I think I'd appreciate a different angle..."
I stuck my tongue out despite my cheeks reddening at his flirty observation and turned my attention back to what I was demonstrating.
I lifted my left leg up behind me before bringing it under my body and planting my foot between my hands. Once I had my balance, I raised up and lifted my hands above my head, holding for a moment before lowering down and repeating it on the other side. After that, I lowered from downward dog into plank and hopped my feet forward before standing.
"Ta-da!"
"Well done," Henry clapped, standing up. "You'll have to direct me as we go, I don't think I can remember it all."
"That's fine," I smiled as he came to stand next to me. "So start by stretching your arms up..."
I led him through the first part, only glancing over at him once we were in downward dog. I giggled at the sight.
"Your hamstrings are tight," I observed. "Ideally, your heels should be flat on the ground."
Henry looked down between his arms towards his feet.
"They're not that far off," He protested. "But what's next?"
I guided him through the rest of it which he, unsurprisingly, handled with ease. He smiled proudly as we landed back on our feet and my heart melted at the sight.
"Good job!" I praised. "Now, do you want to see my favourite part of a yoga practice?"
He eyed me suspiciously.
"Is it some super tricky move that I'll never be able to do?"
"No," I giggled. "It's probably the easiest."
I moved back to the blanket, lowered myself to the ground and laid flat on my back with my hands by my side. Henry watched for a moment.
"Is that it?"
"It is," I confirmed with a smile. "It's called Shavasana."
My eyes were closed, but I felt Henry lay down next to me and he slid his hand into mine as he did. I bit back a smile, relaxing as we stayed like that for at least a few minutes.
"It's very calming," Henry commented. "But I can think of a position that I would find more enjoyable..."
"You can?"
As soon as the question came out of my mouth, his hand slipped out of mine and I felt his body move until it was hovering over me. I let my eyes drift open then to see his smiling face just inches above my own. I sighed happily as I moved my hands from the blanket to wrap my arms around his broad shoulders.
"This is a better position..."
Henry simply smirked before lowering his head until our lips collided. My mind went blank in the most blissful way, it was like the world around us disappeared. The weight of his strong body above me was a new sensation and one that added to the thickening atmosphere around us. The way his back muscles tensed as my hands roamed over them, tracing them through his shirt as they fought to keep him steady above me and the way he moaned just slightly as I lightly nipped at his bottom lip was almost too much for me to handle. I let my hands weave into his hair as our tongues clashed, but as I lifted my leg, hooking it around his hip in a desperate attempt to get us even closer together, he pulled away, resting his forehead against mine.
"I'm sorry," He sighed, breathing heavily. "We have to stop."
I let my foot fall back against the blanket, my cheeks reddening as I realized how carried away I'd gotten and how it would look to anyone else on the beach.
"Sorry," I mumbled shyly. "I got a bit lost in the moment."
Henry chuckled and bent his head to peck my lips again before rolling over and sitting next to me.
"You don't need to be sorry," He assured me. "I thoroughly enjoyed every second, perhaps a bit too much, but if we kept going I'm not sure I'd have the willpower to stop and getting caught having sex on the beach would not be a good look for Superman..."
I couldn't help, but laugh at that as I sat up next to him.
"No, I imagine it wouldn't be," I agreed. "It wouldn't be a great look for me either really even though I'm sure no one would blame me for being powerless to resist you."
"I think it would be the other way around," He argued. "You're the irresistible one here."
"Hardly," I playfully rolled my eyes. "I've read the comments on your Instagram, they're much more juicy than the ones on mine."
"That's a good thing," Henry smiled. "Or I'd have to make some big romantic post about you to stake my claim."
"You have a claim, do you?" I raised an eyebrow. "I know you like history, but you don't need to go all caveman on me."
"Is that caveman behaviour? It's probably more something a knight would do."
"No, if you were a knight you would joust for me," I teased. "And that is something I wouldn't mind seeing."
"Well, I do have some skill on horseback," Henry admitted. "But jousting is a bit dangerous for my taste."
"Do you actually?" I asked, suddenly intrigued. "Know how to ride a horse, I mean."
"Of course!" Henry looked at me like I was crazy. "I rode one in the Witcher, did I not?"
"Sure," I shrugged. "But not for very long. I assumed they stuck you on a really tame one for just long enough to get the shot."
He laughed at that suggestion, but shook his head.
"No, I spent a lot of time bonding with that horse and I can ride very well," He insisted. "I can take you sometime if you're interested? I know the owner of one of the stables on the island quite well."
Excitement buzzed in my stomach at the thought. I'd always loved horses, but riding lessons were expensive and not in our budget when I was a child.
"That would be great!" I grinned. "I'd love to!"
"Perfect," Henry nodded. "I'll call them and see what I can sort out, but for now, I should get you home before you freeze."
I was hoping Henry hadn't notice the shivers that had been running through me since the loss of his body heat, but as the sun was starting to set my thin long sleeved shirt and shorts weren't cutting it. I reluctantly nodded and he rose to his feet before holding out his hand for me. Once the blanket was folded, he took my hand and we started off towards the car when I remembered what he'd said at the start of our date.
"Do I get to drive us home?!"
Henry looked nervous as his eyes flicked over to me.
"Do you promise to drive slowly and not scrape anything?"
"Of course," I smiled. "I promise to drive more carefully than ever before."
He gave it another moment of thought before sighing and handing me the keys. I cheered and practically dragged him back to the car as I ran towards it eagerly, thinking that this was probably the best date that I had ever been on.

Here is a short story based on the Pandemic. Enjoy reading... Stay safe..
It was a sunny Sunday morning and Prakash just woke up. He went to the living room to enjoy his weekend as usual by enjoying his wife’s cooked Sunday breakfast and watching T.V. Prakash looked at his wife, who was up to something.
“Shivangi! What are you upto? What’s in today’s breakfast?”
“Ohh it’s your favorite South Indian Special Masala Dosa.”
Prakash was beaming, “Ohh great, then please make it fast I’m dying here.”
“Yeah sure just a few more minutes.”
Prakash then turned towards his TV and switched on the news channel.
“Listen carefully people, attention, please focus on this clip which we have found. It's a life threatening virus heading towards other parts of the world. Many countries have already been affected, and the series started from China. Yes it is COVID-19, WHO already declared it as Pandemic.”
Prakash laughed out loud, “What the hell are they talking about? It’s nothing but just a cheap strategy to get the TRP.”
Meanwhile Shivangi came with Masala Dosa to serve and said,
“Na, it’s not a joke, my aunt from Jaipur also told me about this virus, it’s not safe.”
Prakash interrupted in between “No dear, these all are rumors and besides this virus is originated from China and we all know Chinese products don’t exist so long” and again he chuckled.
Prakash started concentrating on his breakfast and Shivangi left.
Later he reached the office the other day and at lunch time his friends and him started having conversations and meals. Prakash had few good friends and Sahil, Jatinder and Akshay were close to him. He mostly had lunch with them only and they loved to chat.
Sahil- Have you guys heard about the latest breaking news?
Akshay- Which one? The Virus outbreak?
Sahil- Yeah…
Jatinder- Ohh yeah, man! It was a little horrible and threatening.
Prakash- What horrible and threatening in it?
Akshay- This Corona Virus is taking lives man. How can one be not threatened?
Prakash- I don’t think there is much need to worry about it. It’s just overreacting that’s it.
Sahil- Maybe they are overreacting. But there is no harm to take precautions either na Prakash.
Jatinder- Yes, you’re right Sahil. I think we should start taking precautions before it’s too late.
Akshay- Ok, then it’s final now we only do Namaste instead of shaking hands, use sanitizers.
Jatinder- And don’t forget to avoid public places, and even if you have to go, wear a mask.
Sahil- Indeed precaution is always better than cure guys.
Prakash- Now I think you guys are also overreacting.
Sahil- No Prakash I think we all have to follow this and you should do it too.
They insisted Prakash agree to their decision but somehow he neglected the seriousness of the issue. On the same day few people found Corona positive in their city and the Authority declared curfew in the city. Soon they all had to leave for their homes. Prakash also left for home and in the middle of his route few Policemen were setting barricades and advising people to stay at their homes. Prakash stopped in the distance and started watching their actions. After a few minutes a police officer came and asked, “Sir, where are you coming from?”
Prakash replied, “I’m going home from the office sir. But what is happening all this?”
“We are taking preventive measures. Few people of this city have already been affected with Corona Virus and to stop it’s chain people must stay at home. You also go home and try not to wander anywhere unless there is an emergency. Please sir it’s for your own safety.” Policeman insisted
Prakash was now puzzled with all the happenings around the city. He reached home. Shivangi was waiting for him to fill up household items as the city was now going to be curfew for a few days or weeks nobody knew.
“Listen, ration has almost finished in the house please can you go and pick up all necessary things.”
Prakash nodded then Shivangi gave him the list of things and advised,
“And yes, listen don’t forget to purchase the sanitizer, wear a mask and maintain social distancing in public places.”
Hearing all these instructions Prakash frustrated and without any further adieu he left home.
While purchasing items Prakash did not follow social distancing and his face was also not covered with anything. He came home after picking up all the items.
After a few days he started coughing and had a fever. Shivangi suggested consulting the doctor but Prakash was trying to avoid it. Somehow Shivangi managed to take him to the hospital and the Doctor tested him in various ways. He even tested his blood and other tests to find out if he was Corona positive or not. But sadly Prakash’s report was positive. He was Corona positive and doctors instantly quarantined him and admitted him in the hospital isolation ward where he was complete all alone except his doctors and nurses. He did not want this situation and he couldn’t bear this isolation. He started crying and complaining about his problems to god.
“God why did this happen to me? Am I bad? Have I done something wrong? Why did you leave me in this bad situation? How much faith I had in you, and now look at me. I just want to end this situation of my life.” Prakash was sobbing then suddenly a voice came,
“Prakash you have not done anything bad my child. But you ignored the precautions and what has been done that's done and consequences shall be beared my dear. And who told you I have not done anything for you. I came to make you understand the seriousness of the issue in the face of friends, your spouse, even that policeman but you were not ready to listen my child. What could I do? You are in this trouble due to your own carelessness. And don’t you think that I’m not with you. I’m still with you, my child, in the face of your doctors, nurses. Now don’t cry and get well soon. Take preventive measures and let other people learn from you. Spread awareness and save other people's lives, that’s the best thing you can do to utilize your life.”
Prakash was stunned for a few minutes after this but regained his consciousness and got well soon. While leaving the hospital he thanked his caretakers and every defender who helped someone in any way.

It’s summertime, which means you were likely looking forward to a big vacation to unwind and recharge. While COVID-19 has rendered the traditional “vacation” unsafe, there are still ways that you can get away from your Zoom-fatigue. Here’s how you can get that much-needed vacation.
Take a road trip. Driving (instead of flying) is one of the best ways to control a variety of unknown factors that come with COVID-19. If you’re dying to get out of the house on your week of PTO, then a road trip to a new or known destination can be the perfect remedy. You’ll still need to navigate shared spaces, but you can do so safely with lots of planning.
When you select a destination, make sure you look for travel restrictions and quarantine rules for that location. Some locations are more optimal than others for short trips. You can read about the state by state restrictions here.
You can also take precautions while on the road. You should touch as little as possible, pack disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer, and always wear a mask in public spaces. You should also avoid unnecessary stops if possible (every 2-3 hours is okay). If you’re going somewhere relatively nearby, you can also bring food to reduce the need to enter grocery stores in a new location.
Go to the beach (if you must). Is vacation synonymous with the beach for you? A lot of people feel this way. They’re used to seeing the water and feeling the sand beneath their toes at least once a season. Now, this isn’t license to go to a crowded beach in a state where cases are spiking. However, if you happen to live in a state that has beaches, and you can go to one that isn’t crowded, then it can be a safe summer activity. While you’re there, here are some safety tips to keep in mind.
Stay at least 6 feet away from people outside your household
Skip the crowded boardwalk or food vendors
Minimize time in gathering areas (parking lots, public restrooms, etc.)
Avoid crowded outdoor and indoor spaces
Disinfect rented equipment
Observe local guidelines and recommendations
If you can’t visit a beach safely and being near water is an important part of vacation for you, consider vacationing near a river or lake this summer instead.
Do a “remote week.” Many quarterlifers have experienced job changes or loss during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, you may not be able to take vacation time right now. However, if you’re working remotely, you can change your scenery for a reprieve from your day-to-day. Head to a rental home either nearby or in a different spot entirely (take all the precautions recommended in the above section regarding road trips). You can select a place that aligns well with your home office needs and also helps shake things up a bit. The beauty of remote work is that you don’t have to work exclusively from home. You could work somewhere close to family, somewhere with a lake or pool, or somewhere else creative. Work from 9 to 5, and then engage in vacation activities otherwise. It’s a happy solution for those who may not get the time off from work they’re craving this year.
Final Thoughts Sometimes you have to create your own vacation in life – regardless of the circumstances. Check back at The Quarterlife Center for more about life as a young adult, especially during the craziness of COVID-19.

Anxiety lingers as N.L. officials trace bulk of COVID-19 cases to funeral home
On a day off work in mid-March, Craig Dyer took some time to pay his respects at the funeral of a co-worker's brother. He stopped by Caul's Funeral Home in St. John's with some Canada Post colleagues to support their mutual friend.
Now nearly three weeks later, that March 16 service has been linked to what provincial officials have dubbed "the Caul's cluster" after a person who attended a funeral at the home between March 15 and 17 tested positive for COVID-19.
Contact tracing by public health officials had linked 143 known cases to the funeral home cluster as of Friday, about 75 per cent of the provincial total. Among them are health-care workers and mail carriers.
A 78-year-old retired police officer became the first person to die from COVID-19 in the province last Sunday. His infection was linked to the funeral home, and when his death was announced Monday, the chief medical officer of health ordered a provincial ban on all funerals and wakes.
"It's absolutely scary," Dyer said this week. Seven of his co-workers have since tested positive for the illness, though he has shown no symptoms. "These are your friends. These are people that you've worked with for 10, 15, 25 years .... Now it's personal."
Mail delivery was cancelled across St. John's and Mount Pearl for a week after the first Canada Post employee received a positive result following the funeral. The province ordered everyone in attendance at Caul's services from March 15-17 to self-isolate until April 1.
Dyer said the news sent the workplace into shock. "Fear and anxiety kicks in," he said. "Was I in contact with him? Was I close to them? Did he touch this container?"
He said the situation has exacerbated mistrust between employees and their employer, as people question how thoroughly the workplace was cleaned.
Dr. Catherine Donovan, an associate professor of public health at Memorial University of Newfoundland, has worked on a number of contact-tracing investigations aimed at curbing infectious disease outbreaks.
She said large groups and the behaviour of people within them are contributing factors to a disease cluster. "With something like a funeral or a wedding, they're very emotional events, so there's a lot of close personal contact that happens in that environment," Donovan said.
Heightened levels of fear, speculation and stigma toward those infected are common responses, especially as people look for someone to blame, she said. But she noted that the first person in a known cluster is not always the actual source -- just the first to come forward with symptoms.
Donovan stressed that the large number of cases detected shows public health efforts to trace the disease are working. "Finding these numbers and finding the people in the cluster is a really good thing from a public health perspective," she said, "because it really does give us the opportunity to try and control it."
Reverend Paul Lundrigan was in isolation until this week after presiding over the March 16 service at Caul's.
On the day he conducted the funeral, Lundrigan said staff and guests appeared cautious and aware of the risks of COVID-19, though the province had not yet recorded any cases or issued orders about self-isolating after travel or limiting gatherings.
Lundrigan observed the 50 attendees giving each other space in the chapel. He saw signs warning about the risks of the illness and said staff reminded guests about sanitizing their hands and keeping apart.
But even with the best intentions, Lundrigan noted physical touch is an instinct that's hard to shake at a such events. When he arrived for a meeting with the deceased's family, a relative reached for a handshake, catching himself when Lundrigan declined as a precaution.
"Even if you're trying to be observant, it's easy to make a slight mistake," Lundrigan said.
"To lay your hand on the table where somebody, in fact, has just laid a hand … or put their hand on the kneeler there, in front of the casket. You (put) your hand there, then wipe away a tear with that same hand, and there you go. It's in your system.
The days after the funeral were a jolt for Mike Meaney. He had been following news coverage about the rapid spread of COVID-19 around the world, but it hit home when a member of his household came down with the virus after attending the March 16 funeral.
"It just shows you how people can leave the virus trace when they're in a room," he said from his Conception Bay South home.
Meaney said another relative had already tested positive following the funeral, so when the person in his immediate family began to show symptoms, they called public health immediately.
His family has been careful to sanitize the home, but he said there is still anxiety, especially for his elderly father who lives with him. A handful of Meaney's extended family members have since tested positive, and he was to be tested again this week after he began to experience symptoms.
Meaney said if one good thing comes out of the cluster of cases, it will be people starting to take preventive measures seriously.
"I'm sure a lot of people in Newfoundland have a little bit of a connection to somebody with a case and are like, 'Wow, okay, happened to them,' " he said.

Mike Lloyd, CTO at Redseal, holds 21 cyber security patents and a PhD in stochastic epidemic modelling from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, so is probably the man to talk to when it comes to cyber security in the world of Covid-19
More than three months into the global Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, we have all become familiar with the advice on how not to catch this mysterious and horrible disease, which some people seem to be able to shake off with ease, but for thousands of other survivors now appears to have life-changing consequences.
same precautions you might take to avoid a mild cold: wash your hands, don’t touch your eyes or mouth, keep some distance from others, avoid crowded indoor spaces, wear a face mask.
To a security professional, this advice might seem a little familiar to some degree: change your password, don’t click on unsolicited links in your email, don’t plug USB drives into your PC – all basic and easy-to-understand advice that it seems to be very hard to get people to pay attention to.
But then, after all, there is a reason why computer viruses are called computer viruses. Helpfully, at the intersection of biological virology and computer virology sits Mike Lloyd, who as CTO of cyber risk services provider Redseal and a doctor of epidemiology, has a unique view of both fields.
“Good security is about the basics, it’s about hygiene, it’s about washing your hands,” he says as we chat via video-conferencing app Zoom across eight time zones, Lloyd in his kitchen at home in California, me in my south London flat. “That’s why there are such strong analogies with the virus. Basic hygiene, not some high-tech super pill, is the main way we have of combating Covid-19.
“Often in security we have the same role as dentists talking to people about flossing. We have to keep going over the same advice, over and over again, because people find behaviour modification difficult.”
Before the arrival of Covid-19 at the start of 2020, the biggest killers in the Western world were preventable diseases caused by choices related to poor diet, lack of exercise, or excessive use of alcohol or tobacco, all of which are fixable with behavioural modification.
“But we just don’t do that – we’re terrible at behaviour modification,” says Lloyd. “Then along came this disease that threatened grandma and suddenly it turns out that hundreds of millions of people can change their behaviour.
“I think there’s something in there that is a useful human story. We are far, far better at behaviour modification when it’s not about us, when it’s about some greater mission, such as care for the elderly or care for the community, or however you want to frame it.
“If I map that into something more CISO-specific, of course we’ve all been trying to get people to do behaviour modification by training them about clicking on links and so on, and it really hasn’t worked very well. So you can see a glimmer of hope for security there, I think.
“The point is that humans change their behaviour when they see a mission greater than themselves and I think that’s an interesting point.”
But it is abundantly clear from the constant stream of data breaches and security incidents that even if humans do change their basic behaviours, there is no guarantee that the network will remain free of infection – just as washing your hands does not guarantee protection from Covid-19.
“Viruses are extremely efficient little machines for making more viruses and while the threats security professionals face are people, not biological viruses, cyber criminals are also super-efficient, and they go for the easiest and biggest payoff,” says Lloyd. “When they see very fragile infrastructure, they use very simple attacks.”
The way cyber criminals move laterally through their target networks is also very similar to how a virus like Covid-19 moves through the human body. In the case of the coronavirus, governments tried to stop lateral movement through their networks of humans by isolating humans in their homes. Lloyd thinks security professionals can learn a thing or two about how cyber threats propagate from this.
“It is very clear that we can’t patch humans,” he says. “Humans depend critically on trust, and that trust can be exploited, so you can continue to get people to click on links no matter how many training classes we put them through.”
This means there will still be breaches and points of infection in networks, just as in people, and what security professionals need to do is accept this and focus on stopping subsequent lateral movement, just as doctors try to limit the damage Covid-19 causes in the body, says Lloyd.
From a technical perspective, nobody has got the solution quite figured out yet, he says. “You still see a lot of organisations where once you get deep enough inside, it’s all free and clear for lateral movement. That creates a playground for an attacker – or a biological virus. The analogies are so close that it’s difficult to tease apart when we’re talking about lateral movement of a disease and when we’re talking about lateral movement of attackers. They really do behave in the same way.”
Adaptability and evolution
But the lessons that security professionals can take away from the pandemic do not just relate to changing behaviours. Lloyd says the coronavirus crisis could spark a period of evolutionary change in cyber security, and he turns to the history of human biology to make the point.
“One of the questions around how humans came about is what force was there in evolutionary terms that made humans the way we are?” he says.
“One of the better explanations I’ve seen is that it was variability itself – the climate’s gone through many periods of change, but in the last million years or so, variability went up and when variability goes up, that means the climate changes a lot.
“That means there’s an evolutionary advantage, not to the fittest, but to the most adaptable, which may be what makes humans so successful because we are uniquely adaptable creatures.”
This is reflected in the world of cyber security in this way: pre-pandemic, CISOs tended to think of security in terms of best practices to fit a specific need and then bought the security solutions that would best adhere to those practices – firewalls, endpoint protection agents, SIEM services, or whatever.
“There’s a long list of examples where we can’t just flick a switch and put everything in the cloud”
Mike Lloyd, Redseal
But in a post-pandemic world, where every business will have to respond differently because of the vastly differing requirements across sectors in terms of social distancing, remote working and so on, the ability to adapt will be key.
“It feels very easy for those of us who have laptops and have figured out how to make our work mobile, but really there are quite a lot of industries for which that is difficult,” says Lloyd. “There’s a long list of examples where we can’t just flick a switch and put everything in the cloud.”
This will lead to something of a division in the security world, he says, as CISOs will no longer be able to adopt someone else’s playbook on the assumption that what worked well for someone else will work for their organisation.
Perhaps more concerningly, it may force many down the hybrid route, securing on-premise and cloud-based services with cumbersome, increasingly fragile security stacks.
“The chain is only as strong as its weakest link and if you add more and more links to the chain, if you have more and more ways of doing business, as everything becomes more and more hybrid, then you have an increasing security problem,” says Lloyd.
“This is quite an abstract point, but I think it matters because CISOs still have to make networks as flexible, as adaptable, as resilient as possible, and the pursuit of digital resilience is the most important thing when we’re heading into a world where we know the rules are going to continue to change.”
How to achieve digital resilience
For Lloyd, the most important step towards achieving a digital resilience that can deal with the fact that the world we all thought we knew has changed so radically – and by the way, he adds, other novel security issues around artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT) or 5G aren’t going away – is to know your organisation inside and out at both the organisational, business process level, and at the infrastructure level. That is a big ask.
“It’s actually really surprising how difficult both of those things can be,” he says. “It’s very hard for an organisation to capture how it really works. But resilience is the ability to take a punch and then to be able to recover function, so you need to understand how your organisation works.”
The first step is to audit the processes that are intrinsic to your organisation. Appropriately, Lloyd uses a medical example here – an ophthalmologist would struggle to examine a patient’s eyeball over Zoom, but for a basic GP consultation, telemedicine is probably fine. The second step is to map those factors onto the IT infrastructure and figure out how it helps achieve those processes.
“Resilience is the ability to take a punch and then to be able to recover function”
Mike Lloyd, Redseal
“Until you have done that, you can’t possibly achieve resilience or adaptability, and I think for people who don’t do this every day, it can be really hard to appreciate how hard it is to know how the organisation really works,” he says. “That’s why I emphasise something so fundamental.”
The adage that security leaders need to make themselves indispensable to the organisation’s board, and if possible fight for a seat at the top table, has been repeated so often that it has become something of a cliché.
However, a true understanding of how the business works requires security leaders to show up to board meetings, and to make sure they are not just there as a scapegoat when something has gone wrong.
“There clearly have been organisations that wanted a CISO to attend board meetings so they knew who to fire when something went wrong,” says Lloyd. “How do you prevent that dynamic? You have to actually be achieving something in terms of resilience – that means not educating the board on how you will perfectly protect everything, but educating the board on how you will help recovery when shocks occur.”
Perhaps, he muses, the wider shock of the Covid-19 crisis will be the spur that convinces wider organisational leadership to listen to their security teams. “Right now, it’s not hard to get a board member to appreciate that there can be extrinsic shocks to a business outside of your control,” he says.

Like Virus Itself, Future of Malpractice Liability Is Uncharted
May 1, 2020 | by BRANDI BUCHMAN| Courthousenews.com
WASHINGTON (CN) — Under normal circumstances, with malpractice suits and doctors’ Hippocratic oaths in mind, hospitals take great lengths to prevent patient infection.
During a pandemic, where contagious people crowd spaces shared with the uninfected or the healthy, concern over liability is heightened.
But even as extra precautions are taken, the paradox remains twofold: the crisis mode of the moment ups the ante for potential negligence and the increased contact ups the ante for additional liability.
When it comes to infectious disease, those who would file suit also face a causation hurdle.
“If you are alleging infection, that can be tough because where did the virus come from? Was it left on a counter or doorknob? Did a nurse sneeze? You have to actually prove it came from hospital failure instead of maybe, shaking your boss’ hand a day before you walked into a hospital,” Dr. Michael Wilson, a physician and lawyer based in Washington, D.C., said in an interview.
The question is also about a lapse in the standard of reasonable care.
Dr. Bruce Fagel, who practiced emergency medicine for a decade before becoming a medical-malpractice lawyer in California, said in a recent interview that, as with beauty, making the determination of reasonable or unreasonable care in a claim is largely in the eye of the beholder.
“It’s going to be very difficult to have valid claims against ER physicians, especially given the way things are happening right now,” Fagel said. “If the patient comes into the emergency room and has an urgent condition other than coronavirus, because the whole health care system has been upended, well, the standard of care has changed for them, too.”

States like New York addressed this new dynamic by activating legislation like the Emergency Disaster Treatment Protection Act and including it in its 2021 budget.
It protects licensed hospitals, nursing homes and similar facilities from most civil and criminal liability claims, while also shielding attending nurses, aides, EMTs, physicians, administrators and other staff. The protections began March 7 when Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state emergency, and they will not end until the declaration is terminated.
Similar protections have been extended in multiple states including Illinois, New Jersey, Michigan, Arizona, Connecticut, Kansas, Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas and elsewhere through executive order.
With this patchwork, one might be tempted to turn to sweeping federal legislation as a means to streamline the liability protection process.
But that could be a hard sell, Fagel said, noting old chestnuts in the medical malpractice arena that have moldered in Washington like California’s $250,000 cap on “noneconomic” malpractice damages, which has remained largely unchanged for 45 years despite lobbying.
“There’s no way to have a blanket catch-all, certainly not from Washington,” Fagel said.
Plus, states’ needs and resources are different in a pandemic so liability can shift. In California, he noted, emergency rooms have not been as overwhelmed of late, so a doctor in Bakersfield might not be experiencing the same resource shortage or circumstances ripe for malpractice like a doctor up to his eyeballs with patients in Brooklyn.

At least one lawmaker thinks federal intervention is worth a shot: Nebraska’s Republican Senator Ben Sasse.
In early April, Sasse introduced the Facilitating Innovation to Fight Coronavirus Act, a bill that would protect doctors during the crisis who practice beyond their specialty plus those who are forced to use modified medical devices to treat Covid-19 patients. The liability protections also extend to practitioners working outside of normal facilities, like a field hospital in Central Park.
Expecting malpractice lawsuits to grow as the pandemic continues, the American Tort Reform Association published a white paper this month with its concerns and recommendations for states as policy and Covid-19 litigation intersect.
Tiger Joyce, the tort-reform group’s president, supports Sasse’s legislation. In an interview, Joyce said he would like to see similar language applied in the upcoming Covid-19 economic relief bill, which will be the fourth CARES Act as the packages are known.
The act includes a “Good Samaritan” protection that removes liability from health care professionals providing volunteer services to prevent, treat or diagnose patients with Covid-19 unless the harm was an act of omission, grossly negligent, reckless or flagrant.
For more than 40 days now, doctors and nurses across America have had to contend with record numbers of patients and personal protective equipment in short supply. The Journal of the American Medical Association published findings in late March — as the virus slowed down in China where it originated and picked up in Europe and the United States — that health care workers in China had increasingly returned to the breach with depression, anxiety and insomnia.
“I’m sure the hospital would say it is doing the best it can under the circumstances,” said Dr. Wilson.
Sasse’s expansion could be a balm for health care workers who fear legal repercussions as they try to do their jobs under extraordinary conditions, Joyce said.

But executive orders from state officials raise other questions.
Take Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s executive order that limits liability for staff, employees and contractors at medical facilities during the pandemic while leaving immunity off the table for injury caused by gross negligence and willful misconduct.
“That’s the appropriate step because it is essentially conferring emergency management worker status on people treating patients,” Joyce said. “It calls for elevated standards and a willful standard, which is a fairly high bar because it suggests a level of intention as opposed to error or just a mistake.”
Joyce thinks these moves will be challenged in court, just as groups have challenged orders from Texas and other states to suspend abortions during the pandemic. In Pennsylvania, businesses unable to topple an executive order to shutter operations that are “non-life-sustaining” now seek U.S. Supreme Court relief.
Governor Thomas Wolf’s reply brief is due Monday.

“The question is whether [the lawsuits] will come in six months from now or a year from now,” Joyce said.
Nick Jurkowitz, partner of the Fenton Law Group in California, can see the argument for and against federal legislation to address liability for doctors.
“We are treating a situation medically that we may not necessarily know 100% of the right way to treat people. We could have much stronger negative consequences to the health of everyone if hospitals and health care providers are too scared to try experimental treatments, make changes or make hard ethical decisions,” Jurkowitz said. “If they’re so concerned they will be sued they might do what they need to and that could harm patient care.”
Assuredly, Jurkowitz said, it poses a conundrum.
“I think this is a really difficult situation modern law and medicine are facing,” he said.
He also suspects that if action happens at a federal level it may end up being retroactive.
“The potential for lawsuits as a result of this pandemic is great,” Jurkowitz said. “That could devastate the system in and of itself.”
Even if state governments are doing their best to keep an eye on things, the pandemic moves fast and the only constant is change.
“Courts are closed and strained right now,” Jurkowitz said. “People also might be a little sensitive to filing a lawsuit against a doctor in the middle of a pandemic. I certainly wouldn’t want to serve a health care provider right now, and I don’t think most lawyers would want to serve a doctor who is spending every night in the ER fighting a pandemic.”

As this global pandemic has been increasing rapidly, many things have changed in our lives. The Jehovah’s Witnesses community has also been greatly impacted by the virus because it has completely changed the way they operate. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe in knocking on doors and discussing the Bible to attract people to their Christian denomination. Due to the virus, that is no longer possible because of the risk in spreading it.
Some changes started taking place soon when the virus was officially in America. The Jehovah Witnesses community is very close and it would be odd to see signs posted against shaking hands and hugging in Kingdom Halls according to Brenda Francis. Moreover, passing the microphone when reading the Bible was also stopped. These are only a few steps that were taken by the leaders as precautions. However, these actions were just the beginning. Later, as the cases increased, Witnesses were told to stop knocking on doors. This is crucial to their ministry because this is how they attempt to convert people to their group and spread the message of God.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses have existed for about 150 years. Throughout these years, not once have they been told to stop their ministry. Coronavirus is spread by close contact and because these Witnesses knock on doors and speak with people trying to get them to convert they are in very close proximity. If community members continued to knock on doors, they would be disregarding the safety of themselves and those they are trying to convert. Ultimately creating a bad impression to begin with at a time like this. Robert Hendriks, the group's U.S. spokesman states, “This was not an easy decision for anybody. As you know, our ministry is our life.” This was definitely not an easy decision for them because naturally they feel so connected to their faith that they feel the need to help others by preaching to them. However, as the cases rapidly increased in America, they stopped coming together and began staying at home. But through Zoom, they were still able to be connected and discuss the Bible from the comfort of their homes. Although, it is not ideal for them but it is the best anyone can do at these times. Being safe and keeping others safe is priority.
Although, this topic doesn’t impact me directly, it still applies. I have had Jehovah Witnesses knock on my door trying to discuss the Bible with me on multiple occasions. I agree with their leaders because as one of them pointed out that if they had continued knocking, it put others and them at risk. I believe they took the right response to COVID-19 because with less contact means less risk for spread of the virus. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Life has pretty much halted for now and even though it is not our favorite time, it will be fine as long as we are healthy. At this point, everyone needs to work together to fight against the virus because coronavirus spreads through the community and be optimistic that one day life will get back to normal.
