Best 8K TV 2024 | Our top picks from LG, Sony, Samsung, TCL, Vizio and more
Tumblr media
Best 8K TVs 2024 | Discovering the Ideal TV: Budget, 4K, and 8K Options Explored The world of TV technology can seem overwhelming, with manufacturers constantly pushing the latest and supposedly greatest innovations. In a saturated market, they're vying for your attention, especially with the allure of 8K. Let's be real: 8K might seem groundbreaking, but is it necessary for the average viewer? While 4K is rooted in Hollywood's cinematographic standards, the reality is that many theaters showcase an excellent 2K image. The majority of blockbuster films are completed in 2K, with the occasional exception for IMAX releases, which hover around 4K. It's undeniable that 4K UHD is visually stunning in showrooms, especially when viewed up close. But for many, a standard HD TV, particularly those under 65 inches, would suffice. Interestingly, the noticeable boost in image quality in recent years isn't solely due to UHD. The introduction of QLED and HDR technologies, which became prominent after the phasing out of HD, contribute significantly more to image quality than just 4K resolution. So, while you're free to choose as you please, remember that discerning between 8K and 4K is nearly impossible for the average eye. These high resolutions are beneficial for broadcasting cameras, especially when zooming into sports replays. However, considering how much TV service providers compress videos for transmission, and given the limitations of human vision depending on screen distance and size, the differences often become negligible. As a cinematographer, I'm content with a top-notch 49″ HD TV in my living space. When it's time for a replacement, I'll opt for UHD, primarily because it's become the standard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qZzMg9p1HQ
The Best 8K TVs of 2023: Featuring Samsung, LG, and Sony, TCL, Vizio

While initially a pricey luxury, the evolution of 8K technology has made these TVs increasingly wallet-friendly. So, if you've been contemplating an upgrade, the timing couldn't be better. A caveat? Not all content is tailored to this exceptional resolution. Yet, fear not. The premier 8K TVs come equipped with robust processors adept at upscaling, enhancing the visuals of 4K and even HD content beyond their original quality. Alongside sophisticated picture refinement, these TVs—whether OLED, QLED, QD-OLED, or standard LED—also offer essential features seen in 4K variants, including user-friendly streaming interfaces and 120Hz panels optimized for gaming. Our guide delves into these facets for each model. Our seasoned reviewers have meticulously examined every TV on this list. Their evaluations revolve around key performance metrics: peak brightness, true-to-life colors, screen consistency, and smooth motion portrayal. Moreover, we've road-tested these sets with the latest gaming consoles, offering insights into input lag durations. Each TV has earned its spot here based on merit, ensuring you'll receive top-notch quality for your investment.
Best 8K TV of 2023: Samsung QN900C Pros:
Tumblr media
- Exceptional HDR capabilities and superior picture processing. - Immersive audio experience with Atmos integration. - Packed with advanced smart features. - Ideal for gaming on next-gen consoles. Cons: - Lacks Dolby Vision support. - Scarce 8K content available. SPECIFICATIONS Amazon.com Price: $6,297.99 $5,797.99 Buy Samsung 75-Inch Class Neo QLED 8K QN900C The Samsung QN900C proudly stands as the flagship model of the brand, reflecting the pinnacle of their technological advancements. Whether you're indulging in SDR or HDR content, this TV guarantees an unmatched viewing experience. And if you have the privilege of accessing 8K content, then it's just the cherry on top. However, even without 8K content, the QN900C ensures top-notch clarity and some of the most precise HDR visualizations in the industry. The TV is not just about visuals; its design is sleek and stylish, the build quality is robust, and the accompanying One Connect box enhances its versatility. Gamers will appreciate the premium features tailored to their needs, and audiophiles will be impressed by the robust 6.2.4-channel sound complete with native Atmos support. While the absence of Dolby Vision might seem like a downside, the QN900C's HDR capabilities are so advanced that adding Dolby Vision might be superfluous. So, for those ready to invest in the future and desiring nothing but the best, the Samsung QN900C should be at the top of the list – assuming your pockets are deep enough.
Sony Z9K: Sony's Premier 8K Offering

With its mini-LED panel, the Z9K shines brightly, boasting impeccable detail and unrivaled color precision. As expected from a flagship Sony model, it's packed with advanced features: the Cognitive Processor XR ensures realistic visuals, the XR Backlight Master Drive delivers an impressive dynamic range without discernible halo or flare effects, and the Acoustic Multi-Audio provides immersive, directional sound. A standout feature, the Bravia Cam, gauges your seating position and tweaks both picture and audio for optimal viewing. While its performance is top-notch, the price tag might make some buyers think twice. Costing roughly around £8,000 / $10,000 / AU$15,000, it's a noticeable jump from Samsung's 8K offerings.
LG Z2: The Pinnacle of 8K OLED TVs PROS
Tumblr media
- Supports Dolby Vision and Atmos - Expansive soundstage CONS - Missing HDR10+ compatibility - High price point SPECIFICATIONS Brand Name‎LGItem Weight‎229 poundsProduct Dimensions‎11.1 x 77.2 x 57.3 inchesCountry of Origin‎MexicoItem model number‎OLEDOutput Wattage‎80 WattsColor Name‎BlackSpecial Features‎Wide Viewing Angle; Pixel Level Dimming; Perfect Black; Billion Rich Colors; Game Optimizer; G-SYNC Compatible; FreeSync Premium; VRR; ALLM; HGiG; Cloud Gaming; NVIDIA GEFORCE NOW; Sports Alert; Art Gallery; Room to Room Share; Hands Free Voice Control Amazon.com Price: $24,996.99 Buy LG Signature 88-Inch Class OLED Z2 The best 8K TV with OLED: Taking 8K resolution and pairing it with OLED technology seems to be LG's exclusive domain currently. And based on what we've seen, more companies should be venturing into this territory. The visuals are extraordinary, displaying colors and brightness levels typical of premium OLED displays, and the sound is remarkable given the TV's sleek design. So, why isn't this the number one pick? The grandeur of this TV is mirrored by its equally grand price. The 77-inch model demands a sum upwards of £10,000 / $12,000 / AU$19,000, positioning it at a higher price bracket than other TVs on our list. However, if your budget allows (and you've got the space for it), the LG Z2 epitomizes luxury home entertainment. It has improved from its predecessor in numerous ways: it's wall-mountable, boasts an even more powerful Alpha a9 processor with enhanced upscaling and tone mapping capabilities, offers superior surround sound, and provides an immersive depth of field for more lifelike visuals. The inclusion of four HDMI 2.1 ports is just the cherry on top. While there is a newer Z3 model offering even brighter visuals, we haven't had the chance for an in-depth review yet.
Samsung QN800B: A Budget-Friendly Entry into the 8K Realm PROS
Tumblr media
- Sleek design complemented by the One Connect box - Vibrant, bright, and captivating visuals - Strong support for gamers CONS - Occasionally over-processed visuals - Uneven backlighting SPECIFICATIONS Brand Name‎SAMSUNGItem Weight‎68.8 poundsProduct Dimensions‎11.7 x 56.8 x 35.3 inchesItem model number‎QN65QN800BFXZAColor Name‎Stainless SteelSpecial Features‎100% Color Volume with Quantum Dot; HDR10+; Real Depth Enhancer; Works with Google Assistant and Alexa, Quantum Matrix Technology Pro; Neural Quantum Processor 8K; Motion Xcelerator Turbo Pro; Infinity One DesignSpeaker Type‎4.2.2CH Amazon.com Price: $3,297.99 $2,597.95 Buy Samsung 65-Inch Class Neo QLED 8K QN800B  The best 'cheap' 8K TVs: Samsung's QN800B stands out as an exceptional 8K offering. It boasts dedicated gaming capabilities, an expansive smart TV interface, commendable audio output, an external box for physical connections, a mini-LED display that ensures superior backlighting compared to traditional LCDs, and a design so slim it rivals the thinnest OLEDs available. The display is nothing short of magnificent. As noted in our review, the "TV shines with its bright display, commendable black levels for a backlit LCD, a rich color spectrum, and impressive edge-definition and motion handling." However, its backlight control does fall short compared to other top-tier non-8K TVs. Our tests revealed occasional inconsistencies in how the screen adjusts its brightness, resulting in variable viewing experiences. Another limitation arises when the TV upscales non-4K content, leading to potential display issues. This wouldn't be a significant concern if 8K content was widespread, but that's not the reality just yet. Its saving grace is its affordability. The 65-inch variant is priced around £2000 / $2531 / AU$3878, making it a relatively affordable 8K TV. While this price might be appealing, for 4K content, superior alternatives like the LG C2 and Sony A95K are available. Though we rank the Samsung QN900B as the top 8K option, the QN800B remains a worthy contender for those seeking quality without breaking the bank.
Samsung QN900B Neo QLED 8K: The Best of Today's 8K TVs PROS
Tumblr media
- Enhanced backlight precision - Vibrant and accurate colors - Dolby Atmos integration for immersive sound CONS - No support for Dolby Vision - The revamped 'Smart Hub' UI feels like a downgrade - Scarce 8K content available SPECIFICATIONS Brand Name‎SAMSUNGItem Weight‎120.8 poundsProduct Dimensions‎13.4 x 73.9 x 45.1 inchesItem model number‎CRT2SAMQN85QN900BRBBatteries‎2 Lithium Polymer batteries required.Color Name‎Stainless SteelSpecial Features‎100% Color Volume with Quantum Dot; Real Depth Enhancer; HDR10+; Works with Google Assistant and Alexa, Quantum Matrix Technology; Neural Quantum Processor 8K; Motion Xcelerator Turbo Pro; Quantum HDR 64xSpeaker Type‎6.2.4CH Amazon.com Price: $4,946.99 $3,897.95 Buy Samsung Neo QLED 8K QN900B  Samsung's QN900B Neo QLED 8K TV revolutionizes home viewing with its cutting-edge mini-LED panel, offering unparalleled picture clarity, vivid colors, superior brightness, immersive audio, and remarkably deep blacks. Even when powered down, its elegant design remains a visual treat. The innovative 'Quantum' Mini LEDs, being 1/40th the size of traditional LEDs, allow the incorporation of thousands more LEDs into the backlight system. The result? Exquisite dimming zones and black levels that rival the best OLEDs in the market. These miniature LEDs promise meticulous accuracy, minimizing the blooming effect, which is when brighter sections overlap onto darker areas of the screen. In our testing, such an issue was non-existent. Further enhancing its prowess, the QN900B comes equipped with Samsung's Multi-Intelligence AI upscaling, ensuring images always surpass their original quality. However, not all is flawless. The updated Smart Hub UI, in an attempt to refresh Samsung's formerly seamless smart TV experience, feels more cumbersome. Direct adjustments to settings or toggling between view modes have become a bit tedious. While this hiccup is likely to be addressed soon, it's something to bear in mind for now.
Should You Buy 8K OLED TV?
Wondering whether to dive into the world of 8K OLED TVs or just pick a TV that boasts one of those features? There aren't a plethora of 8K OLED TVs in the market as of now, but a few models like the LG Z Series mentioned above and the 88-inch BeoVision Harmony we highlighted last year do exist. If your goal is to experience an awe-inspiring depth of detail on an expansive screen, 8K resolution is the way to go. However, it's essential to understand that the true advantage of 8K shines through only on larger screens. Ideally, to truly discern the difference between 8K and 4K, you'd need a sizable 77-inch / 88-inch screen or be relatively near to one of the top-tier 65-inch TVs. A smaller 55-inch 8K TV might not offer a noticeable difference. On the flip side, OLED TVs are known for their impeccable deep blacks and brilliant highlights – a feat challenging to achieve with traditional LCDs but becoming achievable with Mini LED backlights. Expect to witness vibrant colors and a level of brightness control that eliminates any unwanted light artifacts. In essence, if you're leaning towards reaping the benefits of only one of these technologies, it might not be economical or necessary to invest in both, especially considering the premium price tag.
Is 8K better than 4K?
8K screens boast a staggering 33 million pixels, quadrupling the pixel count of 4K screens. However, there's a noticeable scarcity of 'native' 8K content out there. And for lower-resolution videos to appear decent on an 8K screen, potent processing is essential. Does Netflix support 8K? Currently, standard streaming bandwidths can't accommodate 8K content, and major streaming platforms like Netflix don't offer it. However, as technology evolves, this scenario could very well change in the upcoming years.
Which 8K TV is the Most Wallet-Friendly?
The term "wallet-friendly" takes on a different meaning when discussing 8K TVs. They typically carry heftier price tags compared to their 4K counterparts, with some even soaring to five-figure price points. However, as the technology becomes more mainstream, prices are gradually decreasing, rendering top-tier 8K TVs more accessible. At present, considering both availability and value across the US and UK markets, Samsung stands out with its QN800B model. The 65-inch version is reasonably priced, averaging below £2,000. Older Samsung 8K models may be available at an even more reduced cost. However, you'd be compromising on the benefits of the newest tech advancements. In the world of televisions, even a year can bring significant changes. For the majority of consumers, we'd suggest holding off on investing in an 8K TV just yet due to the high costs associated with them. As with all emerging technologies, prices tend to decrease as the market evolves and competition intensifies. While 8K is a tantalizing prospect, it's currently best suited for early tech enthusiasts. For many of us, an 8K TV in our living rooms might still be a few years away.
How to choose the best 8K TV
Thinking of Buying an 8K TV? Here's What You Should Consider First: Before diving into the world of 8K TVs, you might want to pause and reflect: do you genuinely need one? While 8K is undeniably the direction in which TV technology is headed, and the availability of 8K content is gradually increasing, the current landscape might still lean favorably towards 4K TVs until more mainstream content is produced in 8K. Should you be set on experiencing the unparalleled clarity of 8K resolution, a key factor to prioritize is exceptional upscaling. Given that not all content is available in 8K currently, a TV that can adeptly enhance 4K or even HD content to near-8K quality should be on your wishlist. Size is another major consideration. Although the allure of a colossal screen is undeniable, especially when investing in 8K, it's imperative to strike a balance. While you'd want to maximize the immersive experience with a larger screen, ensure it aligns with the space constraints of your room, whether you're placing it on a stand or mounting it. Lastly, while many top-tier 8K TVs boast stellar built-in audio capabilities, to truly elevate your viewing experience to match the grandeur of 8K visuals, you might want to invest in a high-quality soundbar or surround sound system. Ensure the sound system complements the size of your TV; for instance, a massive TV will be better paired with a larger soundbar like the Sonos Arc. In essence, make sure the auditory experience is as breathtaking as the visual.
Which Brand Best in the 8K TV Arena?
Choosing the best in 8K TV tech largely boils down to individual tastes, but some models undoubtedly stand out. In our assessment, the Samsung QN900B Neo QLED takes the crown as the pinnacle of 8K TV offerings currently. Samsung's distinct QLED technology truly shines when delivering 8K resolution, and when coupled with its exceptional brightness capabilities, it becomes a top-tier viewing experience. FAQ
What type of computer do I need? Can it be used on a Mac/iPhone/iPad?
Each system will have its own list of minimum system requirements. generally, though, you’ll need Windows 7 or later, 4gig of RAM, and a minimum of 1gig of disk drive space. an honest graphics card is going to be required to point out the courses in high definition, and you’ll need a powerful processor just like the Intel i5 or newer. Most of the listed systems here will work on Mac also as Windows PCs. However, you ought to double-check with the manufacturer before making a sale.
Will, I should buy these golf simulators?
No. Each listed simulator comes with everything you want to have to play, with the exception of mobile apps and computers. Of course, you’ll also need your own golf clubs to play, and you’ll always prefer to purchase more courses.

How to Buy a TV
Tumblr media
It's stupid how difficult it is to buy a TV these days. It should be easy enough to walk into a Best Buy, look at the wall of TVs, and pick the one you think looks the best. Unfortunately, most people can't really see a difference between brands. To make things worse, most TV manufacturers use a special in-store display mode that basically turns the brightness way up to make the screen stand out among the others. Then a lot of people are disappointed when they take a TV home and it doesn't look like the display unit at the store.
Things can be even worse when you shop online. Most online retailers simply spew a bunch of numbers at you to make it seem like a particular brand has super advanced technology. The reality is that most people don't understand what 1080p resolution or 60Hz refresh rate means. Depending on your needs, higher numbers aren't always better or worth the markup.
The purpose of this guide is to help you get past the marketing jargon to help you not get scammed. Here are the 6 steps you should follow to pick out your next TV:
1. Decide what screen size best fits your needs. Note that TVs are measured diagonally, from either the top left corner to the bottom right or the top right to the bottom left. That means a 55 inch TV has a screen that's 47.8 inches wide and 26.9 inches tall. Keep that in mind when you're measuring or planning out how big of a TV will fit in a particular space. Obviously bigger means more expensive, so keep in mind that a living room centerpiece is going to cost much more than a small screen in your bedroom.
Tumblr media
2. Choose the resolution of the screen. These days, you'll generally see either 4K Ultra HD (aka 1440p) TVs or 1080p TVs with the occasional lower-end 720p sprinkled in. To explain what those numbers mean, every screen is made up of a grid of thousands or millions of little dots called pixels. Each pixel emits different colored light such that all of those pixels lit up together produce the image on your screen. The resolution of a screen tells you how many pixels it has. The more pixels you have, the better the screen can reproduce an image of real life. If you think back to an old video game, those were produced with tens or hundreds of pixels, so the image looks blurry or blocky. Whereas games nowadays are produced with millions of pixels, so they look almost identical to real life.
Resolution is a little tricky for the average person, because it can be difficult to see a difference between say 1080p and 4K Ultra HD. For most people who are used to a 1080p TV at home, 4K appears to be only a very slight improvement. However, if you're used to looking at a 4K screen, going back down to 1080p (or even lower like 720p) generally appears to be a much bigger difference.
These days, I would definitely recommend 4K. We're at the point where there's plenty of 4K video content (like on Netflix) and game consoles (like the Xbox One X and Playstation 4 Pro) can even play games at the higher resolution. A 1080p TV at this point will become outdated very quickly in the next few years.
3. Decide if you want to pay more for HDR. If you do, look for a TV that specifies either HDR 10 or Dolby Vision (many TVs support both). Many manufacturers will try to fool you by saying a TV has HDR without specifying one or both of those technical standards.
HDR or high-dynamic-range refers to a wider range of brightness the pixels on your screen can produce. In real life, light and dark are very apparent, so there's a stark contrast between looking up into the sun versus looking at a shadow. Most screens have a hard time reproducing that contrast. You might notice a lot of times when you're looking at a sunset on your TV for example, the image looks kind of flat and not totally real. A TV with HDR will be better at producing that shift in brightness, so that the image looks more realistic.
Unless you have a limited budget, I would recommend buying a TV with HDR. If you watch a 4K HDR movie on Netflix for example, you might be amazed at how much more real the image looks than it might on a more muted screen. Buying an HDR TV now is also probably a good investment for the future, as more and more video content will support it.
Tumblr media
4. Decide on the refresh rate you're looking for. Higher refresh rates can get expensive very quickly, but they can also make a huge difference depending on what you use your TV for. The standard numbers you'll see are 60Hz, 120Hz, and 240Hz.
A TV is sort of like a super advanced flip book. It displays motion by flipping through tons of still images. The faster you flip through, the more fluid the motion looks. The slower you flip through, the more unnatural or blurry it looks. 60Hz (pronounced like the word "hurts") means it shows you 60 images per second. The difference in refresh rate becomes apparent when there's a lot of motion on screen. So for example, a football game will look much better on a 120Hz screen because it refreshes fast enough to keep up with the players on screen, whereas a 60Hz screen might look a little blurry as players dart across the field.
If you're buying a new TV to watch sports or to play video games, I recommend spending up for a TV with 120Hz. If you're mostly planning to watch TV or movies, it might be hard to justify spending up for anything over 60Hz. Unless you're simply looking for the top of the line TV, 240Hz is usually not worth the price. While some people can see a difference, the human eye can hardly distinguish between 120 and 240Hz.
5. Figure out how many and what kind of inputs and outputs you need. Basically this means you need to ask yourself what all you're going to be plugging into the TV. If you have 3 game consoles and a Blu-ray player, you probably shouldn't get a TV with only two HDMI ports, or you'll be sorry to find out you'll need to buy additional hardware like an HDMI switcher. Additionally, if you want to connect a sound system, make sure the TV can support the type of cable your system uses (usually 3.5mm, analog optical audio, or HDMI).
There are different types of HDMI ports that you might want to be aware of, but I won't get into those because it's not relevant for most average people.
6. Decide if you care about "smart" features. This essentially boils down to whether you want apps built into the TV or if you already have a box like a Roku/Apple TV/Xbox/etc. that you're going to plug into the TV anyway. Most TVs these days have smart features by default, so it's actually kind of hard to get a TV without smart features these days. The important thing to know is that you shouldn't pay more for these features if you're already planning to plug in another box to play Netflix, Hulu, or whatever else.
7. (Bonus Step if you want to get a little nerdier) Choose the display technology. The display technology is basically how the pixels are lit up. The standard options nowadays are LED LCD and OLED. If the manufacturer doesn't specify OLED, then it likely falls under the LED LCD category. Samsung and other brands tend to be extremely confusing about this type of thing. They'll use terms like QLED or SUHD, but at the end of the day, they're really just LED LCD displays.
Tumblr media
OLEDs are generally much more expensive, but the benefit is that they tend to have better contrast between light and dark areas of the screen. Because LED LCD panels generally use backlighting, it's hard to make one part of the screen bright and a different part of the screen dark. With OLED however, the screen can light up pixels individually, which makes for a more realistic looking image.
To wrap up, my philosophy for TV shopping is actually a little different than shopping for other products. When shopping for a TV, I would recommend setting your budget after deciding what features you must have. For most things, it makes sense to set your limit and then pick the best option within that restriction. However, a TV is a long-term purchase and a product that typically sits prominently in your living room. In my mind, it makes sense to decide what you want and then save up and only buy when you have enough money to get the product you want. Most people buy a TV every 5-10 years. However, most people buy a smartphone for example every 1-3 years. It makes more sense to splurge on the less frequent purchase rather than the purchase you know you're going to replace in a relatively short period of time.
I hope this clears up some of the marketing jargon for you. Let me know down below if this cleared things up for you!

The best tablets of 2019
Tablets may be fading in popularity, but there are still some great devices out there. If you’re in the market for a new tablet, then we’re here to help you cut down that short list and snag the right one for you. Apple’s iPad range still dominates the scene, but there are some innovative alternatives running Android and Windows. We also have top picks for the budget-conscious and for kids. These are the best tablets you can buy right now. The iPad has dominated the tablet scene for years now, and the sixth-generation iPad (2018) is the culmination of all of Apple’s experience. There are no bells and whistles here. If you want innovation, keep looking. This is a solid, accessible all-rounder that delivers a really good tablet experience at a reasonable price. It replaces last year’s iPad at the top of this list, adding support for the Apple Pencil (sold separately for $100) and a newer processor — it’s identical in every other respect. The bright 9.7-inch display is perfect for watching videos. It feels slim and light to handle, with Apple’s usual high standards shining through in build quality, though the thick bezels are beginning to look dated. Inside, there’s Apple’s A10 processor with an embedded M10 co-processor and 2GB of RAM, but all you really need to know is that it runs smoothly. Whether you’re skipping in and out of apps, browsing the web, watching a movie, or playing the latest games, the iPad delivers lag-free performance. If you must take photos with your tablet, there’s an excellent 8-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.4 aperture that’s fast and capable of capturing plenty of detail. The 1.2-megapixel selfie camera has an f/2.2 aperture, which is adequate for FaceTime at 720p, but little else. The battery life is fantastic. You can expect more than 10 hours of HD video playback from a single charge, and with normal use on Wi-Fi, you might reasonably expect to go a week between charges. If you’re looking for weak spots, then we direct you toward the single bottom-firing speaker. Beyond that, there are no glaring flaws here, and we think it’s the best tablet you can buy without having to spend a lot more money. Despite some odd design flaws, the Galaxy Tab S4 is a quality gizmo with an absolutely gorgeous display. There is no tablet in the world with a screen capable of rivaling the S4’s 10.5-inch Super AMOLED, and it supports HDR content (which companies like Netflix and YouTube are making increasingly available these days). Even viewing non-HDR content on the S4’s 2,560 x 1,600-pixel display is an absolute joy. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor (the same chip that powered popular flagship smartphones like Google’s Pixel 2 and Samsung’s Galaxy S8) works well, despite its relative age, and 4GB of RAM is more than enough to keep the tablet humming happily. The tablet comes with 64GB or 256GB of internal storage, but it can be expanded via MicroSD card if you’re looking to download lots of stuff. The tablet’s four speakers are respectably loud, and it has cameras on both the front and back — the rear-facing 13-megapixel camera is capable of recording 4K video at 30 frames per second, while the 8-megapixel front camera is good enough for selfies and video chat. Samsung has paired its custom Experience interface with Android 8 Oreo, and it works like a charm. Split-screen functionality is better than ever, with lots of neat tricks to learn over time. Despite a bit of bloatware that the tablet won’t let you delete, the software here is generally very good. There is also Samsung’s DeX interface which kicks in when you attach a keyboard dock to give you a desktop feel that works best if you add a Bluetooth mouse, though it does have some odd quirks. The 7,300mAh battery will easily get you a busy day and beyond and it can be charged up in less than two hours. The included S Pen stylus interacts smoothly with the tablet’s screen and will please note takers and artists. The downside here is the high price and if you’re primarily after a laptop experience, then Samsung’s Chromebook Pro or Microsoft’s Surface Go are both cheaper and might suit you better. If you’re devoted to Android devices, the Tab S4 is a good choice. It’s a solid step up from the Tab S3, but that high price might give you pause. It doesn’t quite hit the high notes of Apple’s bigger iPads, but the iPad Mini 4 still benefits from an attractive metal design, a fast processor, and a great app and game library. You’ll find the 7.9-inch display is a pleasure to read on, and it’s size and weight make it comfortable to hold. It’s good for watching movies or gaming, too, though you’ll probably want headphones to go with it. Battery life is solid, offering a good 10 hours between charges. Portability is the reason to pick the iPad Mini 4. If you want an iPad and need something smaller in size, then this is it. Unfortunately, it’s not just the size that has been scaled down here — the iPad Mini 4 is not as lightning fast as its bigger siblings. It’s also expensive, more expensive than the 2018 iPad, which makes very little sense. But you can’t beat the iPad Mini if it’s a small tablet you want. With slimmed down bezels and flat edges, Apple’s redesigned iPad Pro is a beautiful device that manages to pack in maximum screen real estate without being too unwieldy. The home button is gone, replaced by Face ID, and Apple’s proprietary Lightning port has finally given way to USB-C, which gives you far more accessory and peripheral options. Although both models feature the same internal components, the iPad Pro comes in two sizes, offering an 11-inch or 12.9-inch display. Speaking of the screen, it’s hard to beat. The 12.9-inch model sports a 2,732 x 2,048-pixel resolution, while the 11-inch model packs 2,388 x 1,668 pixels. Both benefit greatly from Apple’s ProMotion technology, which boosts the refresh rate to a buttery-smooth 120Hz. If you need a lot of raw power, then the iPad Pro is the tablet for you. Featuring Apple’s A12X Bionic processor, there are eight cores here and a neural engine for speedy machine learning. The result is unparalleled speed, whether you’re editing images in Photoshop or commanding armies in Civilization VI. Storage goes from 64GB all the way up to 1TB, but the price rises steeply with it. Just like previous models, Apple suggests you’ll get 10 hours of mixed use from a charge, or nine hours if you opt for the model with cellular connectivity. The Apple Pencil attaches magnetically and charges wirelessly now, but it will cost you an extra $130. That’s on top of an inflated price tag for the iPad Pro itself. The Smart Keyboard has also gone up in price this year, costing $180 for the 11-inch model or $200 for 12.9-inch. Beyond the steep price and the limitations of iOS for people seeking a desktop replacement, we’re disappointed Apple removed the headphone jack. But even with all that considered, the iPad Pro’s aesthetics, raw power, and long-lasting battery life earn it a place in the pantheon of high-performance tablets. You won’t find anything better. Amazon’s Fire HD 8 (2018), a refresh of last year’s HD 8, doesn’t bring much new to the table. The front-facing camera has jumped from 0.3 megapixels to 2 megapixels and there’s hands-free support for Alexa now, but it’s the low, low price that earns this tablet a wholehearted recommendation. The LCD screen, with its 1,280 x 800-pixel resolution is far from the sharpest, and the viewing angles aren’t great, but it’s good enough to watch movies and read on. The fact is that compromises are inevitable to hit this price. The Fire HD’s all-plastic body is colorful and durable. You’ll also find stereo speakers optimized with Dolby Atmos which deliver reasonably loud, crisp sound on movies, TV shows, and Amazon’s Prime Music streaming service. Alexa works well on this tablet. Asking questions about popular movies, nearby restaurants, and the weather pulls up visual results on the Fire HD 8’s screen (even when it’s locked). That’s just the tip of the iceberg: Alexa on the Fire HD can also control smart home devices, order pizza, call an Uber, and perform many of the same tasks as Amazon’s Echo speakers or the Echo Show. Battery life is impressive, too. It lasts for about 10 hours of mixed-use including reading, gaming, and streaming. The Fire HD 8’s Fire OS software, a customized version of Android, isn’t for everyone. But folks immersed in the Amazon ecosystem will appreciate For You, a recommendation engine that puts videos, apps, games, and movies from the retailer’s library on your home screen. You won’t find a perfect tablet for less than $100, but the Fire HD 8 is an impressive package. Sure, the screen isn’t as sharp or vibrant as we’d like, and the hardware struggles under heavy loads, but there is no better tablet at this price. An 8-inch, screen with a 1,280 x 800 pixel-resolution delivers bright and vibrant colors, and a thick rubber case around the tablet’s frame cushions against accidental drops. The tablet’s 32GB of internal storage offers enough space for lots of books, games, and other media, and there’s a MicroSD card slot for expansion if you run out. When it comes to parental controls, the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition is second to none. Its Fire OS software, a customized version of Android, allows you to manage usage limits, set educational goals, and restrict access to age-inappropriate content. The Parent Dashboard also offers insight into what your kids are doing on their tablet and encourages interaction with discussion questions related to the books your kids are reading. The Fire HD 8 Kids Edition also includes fee-free access to Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited, a library of more than more than 15,000 kid-appropriate games, apps, educational content, books, and videos from PBS Kids, Nickelodeon, Disney, and others. Every purchase is backed by Amazon’s two-year, no-questions-asked replacement policy: If the Fire HD 8 breaks, Amazon will replace it. The original Surface Pro was flawed, but it had a major impact on the market. Microsoft has refined the design since then, and the Surface Pro 6 is as close as you can get to a hybrid device that serves equally well as a tablet and as a laptop. It is the 2-in-1 to beat. You’ve got a gorgeous 12.3-inch screen with a resolution of 2,736 x 1,824 pixels, a thoughtful design, and a choice of internal specs that range from basic to lightning fast. It is by far the most configurable device on our list. The pixel-packed display and loud speakers make it a pleasure to watch movies on, but we found it lags way behind the iPad Pro when it comes to gaming. Microsoft Surface Go If the Pro 6 is too rich for your blood, then you might consider the Microsoft Surface Go, which comes in at a much more affordable $400. It has a 10-inch screen, but also runs Windows 10, has a great keyboard cover, and supports the Surface Pen. Microsoft has improved the battery life, which was an issue in past models, so you can expect to get through a full day of mixed use before needing to plug in. The Type Cover and Surface Pen are excellent accessories and, combined with the full version of Windows 10, help make this a great choice for creative professionals, students, and everyone in between. This is real portable productivity. On the downside, Windows 10 tablet mode still needs work and the Surface Pro 6 can be eye-wateringly expensive if you opt for top-end specs.  Still, it’s our favorite 2-in-1 PC. How we test The tablets we test serve as our daily drivers, so we use them extensively to put them through their paces. That means watching movies, gaming, testing out lots of apps, reading, working on them, and even taking photos and shooting video with them (which is impossible to do without looking stupid). We love new, innovative features, but we can also appreciate classic design done well. Ultimately, we look for tablets that will fulfill the needs of most people, so their ability to serve up entertainment is paramount. Which OS is best for you? If your top consideration is entertainment, and you’re likely to use a lot of apps and games, then we recommend Apple’s iOS as the best platform. There are a lot of polished apps made specifically for the iPad and you have access to all the top subscription services and an extensive content store. It’s also slick and accessible, so anyone can come to grips with it quickly. Android has a larger selection of free apps and games, though they’re generally less polished, but that might be a tradeoff you’ll accept. Things are a little complicated by manufacturer UIs, or in the case of Amazon, forked versions of the platform. They can delay Android updates and make the user experience quite different. Amazon’s tablets, for example, run a version of Android called Fire OS and they initially only have access to the limited subset of apps and games that are available in the Amazon Appstore, not the full list that you’ll find in Google’s Play Store. If you like the idea of accessing the same apps you have on your Windows PC, and you want a business device that ties seamlessly into your Microsoft services, then a tablet running Windows 10 is going to be tempting. It’s powerful, but it’s also relatively expensive to get decent hardware for a good user experience. If you’re not a business user, or you don’t need to run Windows-only apps, it may be overkill.

The best projectors 2018: 8 projectors to consider for your home cinema
Projectors have long held a vaunted position in the home cinema. That's because while TVs are more than adequate to deliver 4K HDR content, you'll likely need to refinance your house if you want a picture larger than 75-inches. But 75-inches is just the beginning for the cinema world.
Whether you want to splash Blu-ray movies across a large white wall, magnify your gaming experience, or throw photos and slides from a mobile device onto a 100-inch plus screen, a home cinema projector should be your first choice of display.
Unfortunately while most AV enthusiasts dream of the day they bring home a beamer for their living room, few tend to follow through. They have the misconception that projectors are hard to setup (they're not), hard to maintain (they're not) and cost significantly more than a TV (they don't).
To that end we want to dispel the myths perpetuated by non-cinephiles out there and help you pick a fantastic-looking projector without breaking the bank. To that end, we've rounded up the best projectors we've tested throughout the last year or two and have ranked them below.
The main selling point of the BenQ TK800 is that it supports 4K and while this is true, it’s worth pointing out that the projector’s DLP chip is not 3840x2160 pixels. It uses XPR technology, which essentially takes a 1920x1080 pixel DLP chip and flashes the image four times in incredibly fast succession to create an image with a perceived resolution of over eight million pixels.
Amazingly this actually works, and even with test patterns the images appear to be 4K in terms of resolution.
It doesn't hurt that the projector is also really bright, which means that even with SDR content it can deliver images that have genuine impact, even in less-than-ideal conditions. As such you can use the TK800 in a room with white walls or big windows, and still enjoy a huge projected image.
Also expect excellent motion handling, which is great for gaming, and it has a low input lag which is also good news for gamers. (The BenQ even supports 3D, although you will need to buy the glasses separately.)
On the debit side, the black level and the shadow detail are both poor, and the TK800 also uses a color wheel, which restricts its range of colors, especially where HDR is concerned. It also means that certain people will see ‘rainbows’, but that’s just a limitation of single-chip DLP projectors. On top of all that, it's quite noisy thanks to both the color wheel and a fan, although the latter is necessary given the amount of heat generated by the bright bulb.
For the last 10 years, JVC has been the projector brand to follow for black levels that will beat your local cinema screen. It's all thanks to JVC's D-ILA technology, which rival DLP and SXRD models just can't touch.
Native contrast of 40,000:1 makes blacks looks truly black. That is, if you treat your cinema room to a nice, dark paint job.
This year one of the main upgrades is HDR performance. The punchiness of HDR won't challenge an ultra-bright LCD TV, but here you'll get an image several times the size.
One thing to note before buying is the JVC DLA-X5900 does not have native 4K projector panels inside. Instead it uses JVC's eShift technology, which projects two different 1080p images sequentially at 120Hz frequency, making up the detail of a native 4K display.
The UHD65 is a hugely enjoyable projector that manages to deliver very good images in both ambient light and blackout conditions. Most projectors commit to one or the other, halving their versatility.
Though the UHD65 sacrifices both ultra-high brightness for daytime viewing and completely convincing black levels in a blackout, it's actually giving as close the 'best of both worlds' as any projector could: From upscaled HD TV channels and DVDs to Netflix 4K and a Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, few users will have complaints about the cleanness, detail or colour of the UHD65's images.
However, we did miss a few luxury touches that a projector this price should include. The remote control is the same as you’d find on a projector a sixth of the price (and includes some button that have no function), and there’s no motorised zoom, focus and lens shift. All of these would've added a more polished, professional feel, which high-priced products like the UHD65 should always offer; it shouldn’t just be about new technology.
Smart, voice activated controls for a home cinema projector may sound like the kitchen-sink approach to feature lists at first glance, jumping on the buzz-word (or should that be ‘wake word’?) bandwagon of Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri or Google’s Assistant. But think about the environment and scenario that your average projector viewing session takes place in, and it starts to make a lot of sense – you’re in a dark room where seeing buttons isn’t always easy, possibly with your hands loaded up with popcorn and other treats.
Being able to shout “play the movie!” at a voice activated projector, potentially installed in a bracket high above your head, seems like a sound move.
Ultimately, while the Alexa features are fun (if a little perfunctory) everything about this the Optoma UHD51A performs exceptionally. At this price you’re going to be hard pressed to find a projector that can deliver this level of picture quality and this feature set more confidently.
The Optoma UHD51A represents a great shift in 4K projecting quality if you find yourself on a tighter budget. What’s on offer here allows even those with smaller living spaces and more modest bank balances a taste of the home cinema high life.
The BenQ HT2550 may look a bit pricey to someone used to seeing discount 4K TVs, for the price you can’t do much better. The projector boasts vivid, clear colors, plenty of detail, and a 4K resolution – all at well under $2,000. That’s no small feat.
The projector isn’t perfect – the blacks on offer aren’t as deep as we might have liked, the projector still creates some fan noise and there’s also no lens shift – but those small downsides aside, we think the BenQ HT2550 is an excellent option for those that want a solid, no-frills projector with support for a 4K resolution and HDR content.
Are there better options? Well, there’s the Optoma UHD50, which is $100 cheaper and offers many of the same perks (though color accuracy isn’t quite as good, and the BenQ projector is slightly better-built) but in the end, we think it’s better to spent the extra $100 for the BenQ HT2550.
If you want big screen home entertainment but don’t have the space, or funds for a large flatpanel TV or home cinema projector, then LG’s DLP LED Minibeam PH450UG Ultra Short Throw (UST) could be the answer.
It needs only a dozen centimetres or so to cast a huge image onto a white wall or screen and, even better, it’s also ridiculously compact and relatively affordable at $650 (£529, around AU$864).
There is a catch of course: The PH450UG has a resolution of just 720p. If you need more, LG has the PF1000U, a slightly larger 1080p UST model, that sells for $1,399 (£999). There are other projectors in this price range capable of 1080p – like the class-leading BenQ HT670 – but if you’re committed to the small form factor, the PH450UG is the way to go.
For those who think that home cinema is an occasional luxury that is just not affordable or practical, the ultra-affordable HD142X is serious food for thought.
Despite its lean price tag, it has a full 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, 23,000:1 high contrast ratio and built-in 10-watt speakers. It even supports 3D video to boot.
Optoma says that the lamp life for the HD142X is somewhere in the ballpark of 8,000 hours – and claims that it would last around 10 years if you watched a two-hour movie every single day. Input-wise the HD141X offers 2 x HDMI (1.4a 3D support) + MHL v1.2, perfect for hooking up a PS4 or 3D Blu-ray player.
We're pretty big fans of the affordable BenQ TH670. It might not be the top of the line from the highly lauded projector manufacturer, but it strikes the perfect balance of price to performance to be worth an audition in your living room.
The TH670 has a Full 1080p (1920x1080) resolution, 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, 10,000:1 high contrast ratio and built-in speakers. Those speakers could be a hair bit more powerful, but for the price it's hard to complain too much. The projector is capable of images spanning from 60 to 120 inches across and its lamp is rated for 4,000 - 10,000 hours depending on which modes you primarily use. Input-wise it offers Computer in (D-sub 15pin) x 2 (Share with component), Composite Video in (RCA) x 1 and HDMI. Win!

Top 10 Best Smart TVs of 2023 Under $2000 : A Personal Review
Over the last half-decade, I've explored and tested TVs from leading brands, including Samsung and TCL. My selections derive from firsthand experience, evaluating factors like user-friendliness, image clarity, audio quality, and smart capabilities. I've highlighted models that have garnered top ratings from renowned retailers like Amazon.
Insignia 32-inch F20 Full HD Smart TV
Tumblr media
This budget-friendly 1080p TV, with its swift integration of Amazon's Fire TV platform and robust app support, is an excellent value for money. While it may not showcase 4K content in its full splendor, lower-cost displays like this often perform optimally at HD resolution. This is mainly because efficiently processing the vast number of pixels in a 4K display demands a powerful TV processor. If you're on the lookout for a dependable television with a user-friendly interface, this is a top recommendation. Available screen sizes: 32 and 39-inch | Resolution: 1080p / Ultra HD | Panel: LED | Operating System: Fire TV. Buy Now 29% $119.99 List Price: $169.99
Samsung 43-Inch The Frame QLED 4K
Tumblr media
Samsung's Tizen-based webOS offers a streamlined and user-friendly experience. A unique art mode lets users display renowned artworks or personal photos, while customizable frames make the screen blend effortlessly with your interior design. This 43-inch model even offers a portrait orientation option. While The Frame prioritizes aesthetics, some aspects like color precision or uniform lighting might not be its strongest points. For those who value design and watch TV occasionally, The Frame is an ideal choice. It's available in a vast range of sizes, starting from 32 inches up to an impressive 85 inches. Available screen sizes: 32, 43, 50, 55, 65, 75, 85-inch | Resolution: 4K / Ultra HD | Panel: LED | Operating System: Tizen. Price: $997.99 Buy Now
TCL 55-inch 5-Series 4K Roku TV
Tumblr media
Roku stands as one of the most intuitive platforms available, and TCL has adeptly incorporated it into this mid-tier 4K TV. It boasts a sharp 4K resolution, Dolby Vision HDR, and a feature to boost color contrast. However, note that this model lacks the mini LED backlight found in the slightly pricier 6-Series mentioned earlier. Available screen sizes: 50, 55, 65, 75-inch | Resolution: 4K / Ultra HD | Panel: LED | Operating System: Roku TV. Price: $420.99 Buy Now
Sony 55-inch Bravia XR X90K 4K Smart TV
Tumblr media
For those looking for a quality TV under $1,000, this Sony mid-tier option is an excellent choice, especially for Sony PS5 game console enthusiasts. It's tailored with gaming features, including a low-input lag ensuring swift screen responses to your gaming console and controller actions. This is crucial, as typical TV processing might slow down gameplay. With 4K resolution and an HDMI 2.1 port, it's primed for high-definition 4K content. Additionally, a full-array backlight ensures uniform brightness, making it ideal for both gaming sessions and regular TV viewing. While it doesn't boast OLED or QLED technology, Sony's Cognitive Processor XR ensures a crisp and vibrant display. This processing power is comparable to Sony's premium range. The TV's versatile stand also accommodates a soundbar placement right beneath it. Available screen sizes: 55, 65, 75, 85-inch | Resolution: 4K / Ultra HD | Panel: LED | Operating System: Google TV. Price: $899.99 Buy Now
TCL 55-Inch 6-Series Mini LED TV
Tumblr media
TCL brings the innovation of Mini LED backlighting to its mid-tier 55-inch 6-Series TV, offering exceptional contrast and brightness typically seen in premium models. TCL has a knack for introducing advanced tech to its moderately priced offerings. While this means certain luxury features might be trimmed, the television still provides a commendable viewing experience. Although its picture might not rival the top-tier models in our lineup, its integration of the efficient Google TV platform and sharp 4K resolution ensures it's a solid pick for the average consumer. Available screen sizes: 55, 65-inch | Resolution: 4K / Ultra HD | Panel: Mini LED | Operating System: Google TV. Price: $858.99 Buy Now
LG G3 OLED 55-inch TV

Paired with a sharp 4K resolution, the streamlined webOS interface, and a user-friendly remote, it's the ideal choice for avid film enthusiasts. While it doesn't come in compact sizes, the brightness boost truly shines on its larger displays. Primarily designed for wall installations, the G Series OLED can also be elegantly displayed using LG's Gallery Stand. Selecting the Top Smart TVs:
Our Criteria In consultation with our specialists, they emphasized the significance of several aspects when making a purchase: - Resolution & Upscaling: Resolution delineates the detail level a TV screen can exhibit, defined by its pixel count. A smaller screen with fewer pixels can display less intricate details, while a more pixel-dense screen, like a 4K TV that houses approximately 4,000 pixels in a single row, offers richer detail. Upscaling is the process where content of a lower resolution is enhanced to fit a high-resolution display. This factor played a key role in our selections. - Format Support: This alludes to the spectrum of HDR (high dynamic range) formats, audio standards, and specialized picture modes (such as game-optimized settings like ALLM) the screen incorporates. Generally, a wider range is preferable. - Panel Type: This refers to the core visual component of the TV—the rectangular screen that projects images. We factored in various panel technologies including OLED, QLED, QD-OLED, and Mini LED, ensuring we covered top choices across diverse budget ranges. For deeper insights on these technologies, continue reading below.
Smart TV Platforms: Which Reigns is the Best?
A pivotal aspect to ponder upon when purchasing a smart TV is its integrated software. This embedded platform connects you to a plethora of streaming services, apps, and other functionalities. Each offers unique advantages and setbacks. Predominantly, top-tier TVs employ proprietary software. For instance, Samsung gravitates towards Tizen, its in-house OS, while LG is inclined towards the webOS platform. Both platforms present a similar user interface with a horizontal layout on their homepages, extensive app support, and hands-free voice recognition features. LG's version, however, boasts a slightly more refined appearance complemented by a versatile remote. In contrast, Samsung offers its TV+ service, granting free access to a multitude of channels. Brands such as Hisense and TCL utilize diverse third-party platforms across their range. Consequently, you might encounter platforms like Roku or Google TV, depending on the specific model. Roku is lauded for its user-friendliness, modifiable icon grid, distinctive screensaver, comprehensive streaming service support, and a superior search function. Google TV, integrated in numerous Sony TVs, guarantees seamless Android device synchronization, intuitive navigation, and the inclusion of Google Assistant. According to Teoh, Android/Google TV has an edge regarding app support. Maciejewski advises consumers to prioritize content accessibility. Although major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Apple TV+ are almost universally available, discrepancies exist. It's prudent to verify if your preferred content is available. Supplementary Factors to Weigh When Buying a Smart TV: Your ideal TV should be self-sufficient. However, if its innate OS isn't to your liking, auxiliary streaming devices like Roku or Apple TV 4K can offer a remedy. Teoh emphasizes the significance of the TV's primary purpose. "For gaming aficionados anticipating usage with next-gen consoles such as the PS5 or Xbox Series X, a TV with robust HDMI 2.1 support, like those from LG or Samsung, is crucial for a 4K, 120Hz gaming experience. Conversely, if you're inclined towards news channels or intend to employ the TV as a computer monitor, OLED might pose burn-in risks." Sound quality is another crucial factor. Most smart TVs have a basic audio output ranging from 10-20W. However, upscale models can offer up to 160W, each with distinct audio quality. For enhanced audio experiences, investing in a dedicated soundbar or speaker system is advisable. Our Expert Collaborators: Our platform, Select, collaborates with professionals possessing unparalleled expertise, substantiated by pertinent education and/or experience. We guarantee that their insights and recommendations are autonomous, free from undisclosed financial biases. Vincent Teoh is a recognized TV calibration expert and the brain behind the YouTube channel HDTVTest. Marek Maciejewski assumes the role of Product Development Director at TCL, while Keith Doughty is an official at the 8K distribution specialist firm, QuVis.
Choosing the Right TV Resolution:
Resolution, in essence, signifies your TV screen's clarity, determined by the pixel count. A small screen with fewer pixels will display less detail than a larger screen brimming with pixels. Currently, 4K is the benchmark resolution for many TVs, incorporating enhancements like HDR (high dynamic range) for richer colors, or Dolby Atmos for superior audio. Typically, TVs 40 inches or above are 4K, whereas smaller ones might be 720p or 1080p. Due to the proximity of pixels on compact screens, the advantages of 4K are less distinguishable from a usual viewing distance. For those seeking a lavish visual experience, 8K TVs might be the choice. With approximately 8,000 horizontal pixels and a whopping 33 million pixels overall, the clarity is astounding. However, 8K content is scarce. These TVs upscale video to mimic greater clarity. But remember, 8K is a premium choice. A 4K TV usually offers significant savings. Marek Maciejewski from TCL Europe suggests that 8K truly shines on larger screens. Opting for 8K requires both a large screen and close proximity to realize its benefits. Also, 8K consumes more power due to its advanced pixel technology. Keith Doughty from Quvis believes the choice hinges on personal preference and budget. The difference between 4K and 8K is subtle unless you're up close. However, for a future-ready setup, investing in higher resolution might be worthwhile. He notes that while 8K offers meticulous detail, lower resolutions can be more pleasing to the eye. Panel Type Breakdown (LED, OLED, QLED, and Mini LED): Which Suits You? The panel, the TV's visual centerpiece, varies in technology across models. Most TVs deploy LED (light-emitting diode) panels, utilizing backlights or sidelights to illuminate the display. QLED is an advancement of LED, enhancing color and contrast. Many Samsung TVs embrace QLED, with premium models tagged 'Neo QLED' boasting superior brightness and color. Mini LED TVs are LED variants with tinier diodes, offering heightened brightness precision. OLED (organic LED), distinctively, omits backlights. Pixels in OLEDs self-illuminate, delivering unparalleled color richness. This technology can achieve pure black shades, rendering cinematic visuals, though they might lack the brightness of other panels. Brands often diversify their panel offerings. For instance, Samsung and TCL lean towards QLED and Mini LED, while giants like LG, Panasonic, and Sony endorse OLED for their flagship models. Emerging technologies like QD-OLED merge QLED brightness with OLED's contrast. In summary, LED or QLED TVs are budget-friendly choices, OLED caters to those desiring a premium balance, and for an unparalleled viewing spectacle, Mini LED or QD-OLED is the go-to.
Guide to Buying Smart TVs:
When you're in the market for a smart TV, consider these four pivotal factors recommended by experts: size, app compatibility, panel type, and the platform ecosystem. Let's delve deeper into each aspect. - Size Matters: It's imperative that your chosen TV fits harmoniously within your space, whether that's wall-mounted, set on a stand, or positioned elsewhere. Always measure the intended location and cross-check with the TV's dimensions. - App Accessibility: While the majority of smart TVs support bigwig streaming platforms like Netflix or Disney+, you may find discrepancies in the support of lesser-known apps, be it specific music streaming apps or exclusive news platforms. - Panel Proficiency: Understand the strengths and weaknesses of different panel types to align with your viewing habits. OLEDs, for instance, are ideal for cinematic experiences in dimmer settings. In contrast, bright LED or mini LED displays ensure better visibility for daytime viewers. Read the full article
