Good news is roller derby is a friendly community that likes newcomers.

If you are in a large city there is a good chance there is a local team, at least in the US, which is where my experience is based. The first thing to do is locate your nearest team. Google will help you with this, but you can also ask around at local skating rinks or event centers, the types of places that might host a game or practice or tournament. Make sure the team you contact accepts your age and gender. There are all women teams, rare all men teams, and coed teams. For underage skaters, you can play on any junior team if you are under 18, or 18 but have not yet graduated high school. Players under 9 years old may only play on positional (non-offensive contact) lines. For transgender skaters, most teams I am familiar with will accept you without issues.

Most teams either allow a potential new skater to either schedule a time to come watch a practice and speak to a coach, or alternatively host nights dedicated to newcomers. If you can find the local teams website or a recruitment flyer it should list how to get in contact. Depending on the team they may accept you even if you have zero skating experience and will teach you, or some of the competitive teams require tryouts. Most competitive teams have local beginner "B" teams though.

For your first time meeting with your local team, you won't usually be asked to bring gear. The first time you practice however, you will need some. This is your quad roller skates, helmet, mouth guard, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads. Some teams have spare safety gear, but most do not. You will need your own mouth guard no matter what, since they need to be molded to your teeth and for sanitary reasons. I recommend "Sisu" brand since they mold closely to the teeth, allowing you to still speak clearly and drink water without having to remove it. Your beginner skates do not need to be super nice if you don't have a lot of money. You can save up for a nice set after your first season once you really know whether you like the sport. If you are good at it some teams or skaters get sponsored help to buy nicer skates. A local skater should be able to advise you on where to best buy skates in your area

Wear leggings or something else for fitting closely enough to go under kneepads and that allows flexibility for practice. You likely will need to pay for a team jersey once you are trained enough to play in a game or scrimmage. Depending on if you have skating experience, you may be able to play early in your first season, or you might just attend practices and get trained for a good while first.

To play in competitive games you may need to get insurance. I had mine through USARS when I was playing. It was not expensive. Your local team should be able to give you better advice on whether or not they require it and what to get.

There are 2 major flat track leagues, USARS (USA roller sports) and WFTDA (women's flat track derby association. The rulesets used are slightly different between leagues. I've played both types. I liked WFTDA better, but did enjoy both. Some teams actually play with both leagues, but I wouldn't recommend this for beginners who may struggle to differentiate between the subtle differences. Banked Track is also an option, though you may not have a local banked track team because those tracks are expensive and far more difficult to move and set up. Banked track is a lot of fun though if you get the chance. What you join is all personal preference though I believe WFTDA is more widespread.

If you have never used quad skates before, I recommend visiting a skating rink a few times before you reach out to a team to see if you enjoy it, where you can rent skates before you shell out money to get your own stuff.

This is a full contact sport. If you have health issues consider whether or not skating could make it worse. You can ask a doctor if you are unsure.

I think I might compile a few separate posts this month discussing the basics rules and game format, popular roller derby history, and skating fashion, since if I Infodumped all of my advice on this one answer it would get super overwhelming. I keep saying I would love if the show had like a regular few seasons type format because it has so much potential (okay maybe it's my activist ass who keeps wanting more media about activism). Like I would have loved if they would have slowly thanks to White, but also kinda thanks to people like Eugene or Nuch (yes I want my girls to join them so badly), they would realize that all this illegal activity and burning down houses is also not how you bring out positive change. The system is rotten that much is clear, and I do love how the show is portraying the various approaches to the system and people inside and outside of it and how they're all, how we all, are complicit in maintaining it. But what the boys are doing is not how you bring anything positive. I would love if in future seasons they would pivot towards more actual realistic activism. And I would have LOVED if they focused on Yok's mom and disability rights. Okay I know it's an unrealistic wish because we're still in the BL world, and we're still in Thailand but god just someone fucking make me a proper activist show goddammit!

Africa’s sanitation problems

Recently, data reported in a World Bank report referred about the social costs (and not only) related to the practice of most people in Ghana to defecate in the open air. A practice widespread among the population that costs the African country about 79 million dollars a year. 74% of this amount is linked to the premature death of tousends of people (of whom 5,100 children 5 years old or younger) every year precisely because of complications related to diseases attributable to infected water and lack of hygiene. Impressive data confirmed by Rushnan Murtaza, representative of Unicef in Ghana, during the “National Hygiene Campaign”: one out of every five Ghanaians only one house every seven has a bathroom inside. A few days ago, under the patronage of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was launched a campaign “We keep Ghana clean: do your best”, but, according to Murtaza, unless the country takes drastic measures, it will take at least 90 years to solve this problem. The problem of lack of sanitation (which is also closely linked to another problem, that of lack of water) is not limited to Ghana. Despite “18 out of 54 African countries have reached a medium-high standard of living” (African Economic Outlook report published by the African Development Bank, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Development Programme), the situation in many countries remains serious. 544 million Africans (out of a population of just over one billion people) live in poverty. Most of the population have no access to primary services such as cooking fuel, electricity and, above all, sanitation. It is precisely this lack that kills more children than those who kill because of malaria, AIDS and measles together. According to the UN, access to adequate sanitation, good hygienic practices and drinking water could save the lives of 1.5 million children every year. For this reason the World Toilet Day has been celebrated around the world for some years now, on 19 November.

In 2017, 2.5 billion people in the world still do not have access to toilets. And so far nobody has been able to solve the problem. Trying to combat some of the most serious causes of death in the world is completely pointless if we do not take action to reduce the lack of sanitation. In shanty towns (sometimes are immense) there is almost always a lack of sewerage. In many countries, hundreds of children in schools are forced to long queues up to access toilets (or supposedly under-sized ones). Quite often, outside the inhabited centres, widespread poverty prevents families from dedicating the few economic resources available building latrines.

The consequence is the spread of diseases. Such as dysentery, which kills 1.5 million children annually. And hundreds of millions of people have limited growth due to this water-related disease (the disease deprives them of nutrients and energy).

In Africa (and in Asia) the most serious situation. Not only in Ghana. Also in Uganda, where unacceptable waste treatment systems are used near refugee camps in the north of the country. Or in Ethiopia, where more than 70% of a population of almost 100 million does not have access to “modern” toilets (which means at least one latrine closed and covered with a concrete slab and equipped with a tube that sucks in the air from the hole).

According to researchers, 58% of the population in Africa do not have access to adequate sanitation, there is no adequate sewage system. For children under five years of age, diarrhoea and malaria are the second and fourth causes of death. Every year, 900,000 people die of malaria in Africa and 70% of them are children. In sub-Saharan Africa, every 30 seconds a child under five dies of malaria. Even worse data for the diarrhoea (and its consequences) that kills 5000 children every day.

According to Unicef, in the South of the world, 226,000 children die every week from diseases that could be avoided with a very modest expense: solving some of these problems and avoiding their death would take three billion dollars a year. A ridiculous sum thinking that all around the world countries spend 80 billion dollars on armaments. Not in one year: every single day.

The USA alone spends more than USD 500billion on weapons and armaments. And recently, President Trump has urged the countries that are party to the Atlantic Pact to increase their annual payments to NATO. Hundreds of billions of dollars when 80 billion dollars (less than 1% of global wealth) would be enough to guarantee all inhabitants of the planet basic services. Including hygienic ones.

This would deserve celebrating the World Toilet Day.
