A Brief History of Sanitary Pads

Sanitary Pads are a dire necessity for women. Every month, the menstrual cycle reminds the ladies of their ability to bring in new life on this planet. Most of us cannot imagine a day without sanitary pads and panty liners during those five days of periods. However, our ancestors did not have the “luxury” of such basic sanitation tools. In fact, this might seem a little unbelievable, but sanitary pads were initially invented for nursing wounded soldiers. The French nurses used something similar to modern-day sanitary pads to dress the wound of the soldiers that were made from cheap yet highly functional disposable materials! Read on to get a brief history of panty liners and sanitary pads.

Lister’s Towels: Though primarily used in the military, sanitary pads were commercialized in 1888 and were then called south ball pads. The USA, one of the biggest capitalist nations, released it to the public in 1896 when Johnson and Johnson launched their version of “south ball pads” in the American market. Menstrual pads then went by the name Lister’s Towel: Sanitary Towels For Ladies. The product name itself deterred many from purchasing the product, and thus the term “Nupak” was coined in the early 1920s.

Purchase and Problems: There has always been a taboo associated with panty liners and sanitary pads that many face even today. In the 20th century, the situation was hardly different. The ladies would leave the money discreetly in closed boxes, and the druggist would wrap up the pads and leave them for the women to collect. The sanitary pads were super expensive, and only the rich could afford them. There weren't any “wings” either to hold the pad in place, and it would often stain the clothes and the belonging of the ladies, especially during the days of heavy flow.

One of the subscriptions I get each month is the Faithbox. Faithbox is a Christian monthly subscription box. Their mission is to help you grow in your faith each month. In each box, you will find products that they trust will inspire you, guide you in making an impact, and bring you joy in using them. Each product is spiritually inspirational, environmentally responsible, and socially conscious. Each box also comes with a theme. May’s box theme was loneliness.

Inside the box on top, you will find the Impact Guide and the Everyday Faith booklet. The Impact guide explains each product in the box, about the boxes theme, and the month donation benefactor. In the Everyday Faith booklet, the theme of loneliness is approached in different verses throughout the bible. Faithbox takes us on a journey through the Bible to look at some heroes of the faith who also experienced loneliness. To see what they experienced and what they learned through their loneliness. Through their stories, we will find hope and strength for our own stories. We will take inspiration and courage to navigate our own loneliness and discover that no matter what, God is always with us, and He always has a purpose for what we experience.

The next product comes from the company Grey Ghost Bakery. They included two of their scratch-made cookie packages in the flavors Molasses Spice and Lemon Sugar. Each of her recipes originates from a family tradition and has been perfected over the years to provide customers with the best cookies possible. The Lemon Sugar cookies are soooo good. I’m not a huge molasses fan so I’m a little bias on that one.

Another product in the box was Words of Jesus for Everyday Living. This book is filled with powerful statements and encouraging words from Jesus. The words of Jesus are organized in over 100 topics that are easily searched using the index in the back of the book. Look at it each time when in need of inspiration, comfort, enrichment, blessing which Jesus’ words can surely provide. I have bookmarked a few pages already in this book. It’s a great book to keep at hand for anything you may be searching for, you can find it through Jesus.

Each month the box comes with stickers and watercolor paintings. This month’s stickers are premium waterproof stickers from JoJo and Company. Their stickers are made of premium materials making them great for placement on your computer, fridge, or even car. Each sticker has an inspirational or uplifting message intended to bring joy in the simple moments. Each sticker sale provides one meal for the village of Ti Riviere, Haiti. I put both upright on my door to look at each day. They are so pretty.

All of their products are made by their network of artisans, many of whom are women from remote villages. Amongst the many challenges, these female artisans face is access to basic healthcare needs.
