Jill Pflugheber, Microscopy Specialist, and Dr. Steven White, Lewis Professor of Hispanic Studies (retired) Trichocereus Trichocereus pachanoi Feldman’s research on the ritual use of “Wachuma,” the San Pedro cactus, establishes that Trichocereus pachanoi is one of the plants of power that is best represented in pre-Incan iconography, appearing in the art of a variety of indigenous cultures such as that of Chavín, Nazca, Moche, Paracas, and Chimú. The traditional use of this cactus, which contains significant amounts of mescaline, extends to northern Chile, northwestern Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. Even so, he says, the pre-Hispanic uses of the cactus (as a sacrament that facilitated communing with the divine spirits of nature) are still particularly well-conserved in northern Peru in the mountains of Piura (Huancabamba and Ayabaca), where the Complex of Las Huaringas Lagoons (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) with its “paramo” ecosystem is located. Feldman analyzes the social function of San Pedro as a means of diagnosing illness and healing as well as conflict resolution or achieving prosperity in diverse forms. It is also employed in rituals for predicting the weather, doing astronomical observation, and extracting the mamayacu, (the mother of the sacred waters of the lakes). Feldman believes that the traditional use of San Pedro “represents a factor of social cohesion and regional cultural identity, while at the same time preserving a centuries-old religious system.”

Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:

When Peter Else left the University of Arizona in 2005 to live in the San Pedro Valley full time, he planned to spend his retirement farming in one of the most ecologically intact landscapes left in southern Arizona, where the nearby river remains undammed and giant cactuses fill the space between the Galiuro and Rincon mountains.

But Else, who previously directed the Tucson Area Agricultural Centers at the University of Arizona, soon found himself in the middle of one of the most consequential debates over developing green spaces for green energy. For nearly a decade, he has been fighting the SunZia project—a transmission line connecting 3,000 megawatts of clean energy generated by wind farms in New Mexico to the power grid. The transmission line was routed largely along highways in New Mexico and Arizona but detoured into the San Pedro Valley for roughly 50 miles, cutting through a landscape that for decades avoided most of the impacts of human development. Other routes identified by developers were deemed to have greater negative impacts by federal regulators, while the company said building along existing infrastructure was too costly.

“I’ve never done anything like that before in my life,” Else said of becoming a citizen intervenor during the Arizona Corporation Commission’s (ACC) permitting process for SunZia, a role that allows citizens impacted by a project to directly participate in its permitting by providing sworn testimony and cross-examining witnesses. “I had no idea what I was getting into.”

Fifteen years since the project was first proposed and nearly a decade after state regulators began reviewing the project, Else is still involved, suing the ACC, which regulates state utilities, over its issuing of a certificate of environmental compatibility (CEC) to SunZia. The suit argues that the development has fundamentally changed since it was narrowly approved in 2016 and no longer benefits Arizona.

When SunZia was approved, the project planned to build two side-by-side power lines and connect to a planned substation in Bowie, Arizona. One of the lines built would be an alternating current line, enabling other energy projects in southern Arizona to connect to the grid, while the other would be a direct current line, which doesn’t easily allow for interconnection and is best used for sending large amounts of energy over long distances. But since Pattern Energy purchased the project in 2022, only the DC line is being built after the ACC agreed to separate the permits for both of the lines. The AC line currently lacks the funding to begin construction, and all of the project’s wind energy is slated to be sold in California, where it’s worth more.

“As a matter of law, the Commission cannot approve a CEC when on one side of the balance is zero (no Arizona purchasers) or noneconomical power, and on the other side is environmental and ecological harm,” the lawsuit reads. “This is an independent reason to remand: the Commission must require Pattern to put on evidence of actual need in Arizona.”

Else’s lawsuit is just the latest in a series of challenges facing SunZia, the biggest renewable energy project in U.S. history, despite construction on the project having already begun. Fights over the development are playing out in state and federal courts.

Transmission lines are vital to the energy grid and a major component of the transition away from fossil fuels. The lines send energy, often generated in remote places, over long distances, typically to major urban centers. But building them can be a long and tedious process, involving regulators from various states and federal agencies and the consultation and feedback of local and tribal communities, environmental groups and others.

The Ultimate List of Things to Do in Medellín

Once considered one of the deadliest cities in the world, Medellín has undergone a transformation over the last fifteen years that has made it one of the most modern places in all of Colombia.

The city has become a lot safer, there is a fantastic metro and cable car system that could rival the best in Europe, lots of parks, new buildings, libraries, restaurants, and a growing tech scene.

The city has changed a lot, and you can tell the residents are very proud of everything they’ve accomplished. There’s a palpable sense of possibility in Medellin. Optimism and excitement were always in the air.

Medellín is now one of “it” cities in the world. Tourists swarm it, and foreigners (especially young digital nomads) are settling and retiring here in droves. It was the most cosmopolitan and international city I visited in Colombia.

I spent close to a total of three weeks in Medellín.

If you’re looking to visit Medellín (and I don’t see why you wouldn’t be if you’re in Colombia), here is a list of my favorite things to do and see after spending so much time there:

1. Explore the Numerous Parks and Plazas

Medellín’s year-round temperate climate makes it a perfect place to spend a lot of time outdoors, where people are always lounging around and vendors are peddling food and drinks. Two must-visit parks are:

Plaza Botero – Botero was a famous artist from Medellin known for his drawing and statues of oversized people. This plaza is home to 23 Botero sculptures and is always packed with people taking photos, street performers, and artists. Located in the Old Quarter, you’ll find a couple of museums in the square too.

Parque Lleras – Located right in the center of Poblado, this park is full of people all day and night. There are street vendors, food sellers, musicians, and people drinking into the wee hours of the night. It’s a wonderful place to people-watch and one of the best places to have fun in the city!

2. Wander Parque Arvi

This park is worthy of its own entry. Located in the mountains near the city, you can take the gondola right from the subway to the park’s entrance. It’s a beautiful ride through the hills and offers some incredible views of the valley and city.

The park spans 16,000 hectares and includes trails that date back over 1,500 years. At the park entrance, you’ll find a small market as well as trails to hike. To visit, you now have to take a guided tour. It costs 5,000-7,000 COP ($1.50-2.25 USD) depending on the trail (most trails are 2-4km long). Bird-watching tours are also available.

3. Explore Jardín Botánico

The botanical gardens, a quiet retreat from the noise and chaos of the city, host numerous events, concerts, and festivals throughout the year. They cover over 14 hectares and are home to around 4,500 flowers and some 139 different bird species.

There’s also a nice (if not overpriced) restaurant in the center if you feel like spending more time here relaxing and taking in the scene.

4. See a Soccer Match

Soccer (futbol) here is religion and, if there are games when you’re here, you should really try to see one. Medellín has two local teams: Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín. Supporters of each team occupy bleachers at opposing ends of the stadium since things tend to get rowdy and violent when they are near each other. Ticket prices are well under 40,000 COP (under $12.50 USD).

5. Take a Day Trip to Guatapé

Guatapé is the most popular day-trip destination from Medellín. It’s a colorful pueblo (village) situated on the edge of a lake about two hours from town, and it’s possible to take tours of the surrounding area by speedboat or party boat (which is very popular with backpackers who spend a night or two here).

The main attraction is El Peñol, a granite monolith with over 700 concrete stairs etched in its side. For a few thousand pesos, visitors can climb to the top for breathtaking 360-degree views of the region.

Guatapé is a long day trip from Medellín (hostels in the city organize trips throughout the week), so I recommend trying to spend at least a night here so you aren’t rushed and can enjoy the area little more.

6. Take a Free Walking Tour

One of my favorite things to do when I get to a new city is to take a free walking tour. They’re perfect for getting an overview of a place while giving you access to a local expert who can answer your questions.

Real City Walking Tours has a great free tour that will give you an informative introduction to the city. Don’t do any other tours; this is the only free walking tour you need, and it’s the best in town. You’ll get a lot of information, and the guides are wonderful. Be sure to tip at the end!

7. Tour Comuna 13

This area was once the most violent part of Medellín. Murder, drugs, and violent crime were rampant (it’s still not a safe area to visit at night). You used to have to go through guards to get into this area; if you didn’t live here, you weren’t let in.

However, thanks to its street art (which was a reaction to heavy-handed police raids) there has been a huge influx of tourists. That has made part of the area safer and led to a rise in business and commerce. It’s really changed the fabric of the community. Local residents are even coming here now, figuring that if the tourists are going, it must be good!

You can visit by yourself or go on a tour (where a guide will explain the history of the area and the artists). Some of the better tour companies are:

8. Visit the Museo de Antioquia

Founded in 1881, this interesting museum is home to numerous pre-Colombian works as well as national and international works by famous artists (there are a bunch of Boteros here too) and a wide variety of photographs and sculptures.

9. Wander the Cementerio Museo de San Pedro

Built in 1842, this cemetery is also a museum where you can see the monuments and graves of many famous Colombians while learning about their lives and contributions. There’s a lot of large marble mausoleums and statues here. Keep an eye out for special events such as midnight tours and movie nights. The cemetery is small but it’s also close to the botanical gardens so you can do both one after the other.

10. See the Casa de la Memoria

This museum opened in 2012 and examines the history of armed conflict in Colombia. It sheds light on the struggles the people of Colombia have had to overcome to get where they are today.

It’s a very sobering and solemn place but it offers some important insights. Don’t miss it.

11. Visit the Museo de Arte Moderno

The Museum of Modern Art, located in a refurbished industrial building, is an awesome work of art in itself. There’s a ton of exposed area, giving it a really charming feel. Many people have a love-hate relationship with modern art (it’s not my personal favorite, I admit) but even I enjoyed my visit here.

The collection is small, but there’s also a beautiful photography section on the bottom floor. Even if it’s not your thing, it’s worth spending a couple hours here to get a sense of the modern art scene in the city.

12. Take a Food Tour

If you’re looking to taste a sample of what Medellín™ has to offer, there are a couple of food tour companies that can help. It’s a great way to get a taste for the local cuisine while learning about the country’s traditions in the process. There are plenty of options, such as street food tours from Toucan Café or more traditional local restaurant tours from Medellín City Tours. Both are good options!

Expect to pay 143,000-286,00 COP ($45-90 USD) per person.

13. Visit a Microbrewery

If you find yourself parched after an afternoon of sampling the city’s delicious cuisine, consider taking a brewery or craft beer tour to quench your thirst. There is an up-and-coming craft beer scene in Colombia, and Medellín has over 30 breweries and microbreweries. These are some of the best places to try a local beer:

3 Cordilleras runs tours Thursday and Friday evenings, offering five samples for 25,000-30,000 COP ($8-10 USD) per person.

Cerveza Premium Apóstol has a tour every Thursday at 6:30pm where you can see the brewery, taste a few drinks, and enjoy a snack in the process. Advanced booking is required, and tickets are 35,000 COP ($11 USD) per person.

20 Mission Cerveza has great beer, great food, and it’s a fun place to hang out and meet people. They don’t offer tours, but they do host music events and DJs. It’s super popular and one of the best places in town to grab a beer.

Brew House is a family-owned-and-operated brewery where you can take a tour and sample the offerings alongside their full pub menu.

Medellín Beer Factory doesn’t offer tours, though it does brew its own beer, with over 50 kinds on the menu! It’s a great place to relax with friends.

14. Visit Comuna 8

Much like Comuna 13, this area was one of the poorest in Medellín — and it still is. This district was really isolated until the city built a gondola from downtown, allowing people to get to work a lot more easily.

La Sierra runs a tour to teach people about the history of the area, and, unlike Comuna 13, it’s not overrun with tourists. It’s a small district and the tour doesn’t last long, but you get a much more authentic look at the city and its people and history than you do in Comuna 13 (where the focus is more on street art). I highly recommend it; it was one of the most insightful experiences I had in Medellín.

Finally, Don’t Do the Escobar Tour!

The locals here are not fans of Pablo Escobar. His violent life and legacy caused untold amounts of harm to the city and its population, and while it’s always good to learn about the history of a destination, glorifying this is not something I want to support. You can learn about his life online in a way that doesn’t spit in the face of the locals, many of whom don’t even speak his name. Out of respect for them, I encourage you to skip the Escobar tour.

Where to Eat in Medellín

I ate a lot in this city — and it was amazing! Here are some highlights:

Mondongo – Traditional Colombian food in a relaxed atmosphere. Try the mondongo, a traditional tripe soup. It comes with a ton of side dishes (including giant avocados). Come early, as this place get packed. Try to avoid the weekend. (Cl. 10 #38-38)

I was never bored in Medellín. In a country full of hype, this hyped-up city is all that it’s cracked up to be. It has enough activities to fill weeks on end. Combined with the low cost of travel and living, it’s no wonder more and more people are visiting the city.

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines, because they search websites and airlines around the globe, so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use it all the time. Here are suggested places to stay in Medellín:

Los Patios: This is an upscale hostel, but you get a lot of value. It’s in a great location and the staff are awesome. It’s always clean and the beds are comfy!

Happy Buddha Boutique Hostel – This is the biggest party hostel in Medellín, so if you’re looking to get crazy, this your best bet! The staff works hard to keep people happy (and drunk), including organizing drinking games, salsa classes, and pub crawls!

The Wandering Paisa – This hostel is located in the upscale area of Laureles, which is the up and coming touristy area of the city. All the dorms are covered in South American and Colombian cultural artwork by local students and each bed comes with a large locker and a privacy divider, which makes it easier to sleep.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. The Ultimate List of Things to Do in Medellín

Once considered one of the deadliest cities in the world, Medellín has undergone a transformation over the last fifteen years that has made it one of the most modern places in all of Colombia.

The city has become a lot safer, there is a fantastic metro and cable car system that could rival the best in Europe, lots of parks, new buildings, libraries, restaurants, and a growing tech scene.

I spent close to a total of three weeks in Medellín.

If you’re looking to visit Medellín (and I don’t see why you wouldn’t be if you’re in Colombia), here is a list of my favorite things to do and see after spending so much time there:

There’s also a nice (if not overpriced) restaurant in the center if you feel like spending more time here relaxing and taking in the scene.

10. See the Casa de la Memoria

This museum opened in 2012 and examines the history of armed conflict in Colombia. It sheds light on the struggles the people of Colombia have had to overcome to get where they are today.

It’s a very sobering and solemn place but it offers some important insights. Don’t miss it.

11. Visit the Museo de Arte Moderno

Cra. 44 #19a-100, +57 4-444-2622, elmamm.org. Open Tuesday-Friday 9am-6pm, on Saturdays 10am-6pm, and Sundays 10am-5pm. Admission is 12,000 COP ($4 USD) per person.

12. Take a Food Tour

Expect to pay 143,000-286,00 COP ($45-90 USD) per person.

13. Visit a Microbrewery

3 Cordilleras runs tours Thursday and Friday evenings, offering five samples for 25,000-30,000 COP ($8-10 USD) per person.

Brew House is a family-owned-and-operated brewery where you can take a tour and sample the offerings alongside their full pub menu.

Medellín Beer Factory doesn’t offer tours, though it does brew its own beer, with over 50 kinds on the menu! It’s a great place to relax with friends.

Sunshine, water and a whole lotta hippies

My good friend Bee had an extended layover in Guatemala on her way back to LA from Chile. For me it came at such a great time - I had just moved into my new place, was settling into my new job and starting to feel quite comfortable living in Antigua. It was a quick week visit, but we packed in as much as possible. We went to the Earth Lodge, a hippie haven in one of the cerros above Antigua. Completely sustainable, the Earth Lodge is a nice day getaway complete with good food, better beers and live music. You can easily go there alone and instantly start up a conversation with a stranger and leave with a friend. Total buena onda, it’s a place I will definitely escape to time&time again throughout my year here.

But the real reason I’m writing is to talk about my first trip within Guatemala I’ve made. The last weekend Bee was here we got up at the crack of dawn and headed via shuttle 2.5 hours to Lake Atitlán. Lake Atitlán is in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range, located in the Sololá Department of southwestern Guatemala. When I say lake, you’ll picture something relatively small. However, this lake is not only immense in size but in depth as well. As the deepest lake in Central America, is boasts a maximum depth of about 340 meters, and is roughly 12X5 km with around 20 km3 of water. So, yeah, it’s pretty damn big and deep. Alos, fun fact, Atitlan means "at the water" in Nahuatl and the lake is surrounded by 3 active volcanoes.

The main town is called Panajachel, or as Chapins (Guatemalans) call it, Pana. While Maya culture is predominant in most lakeside communities, Pana, has been ‘overwhelmed’ over the years by Guatemalan and foreigners. In the 1960s it attracted many hippies and, although the civil war caused many foreigners to leave, the end of hostilities in the late 90s brought on a renewal of the foreigner boom. Today, the town's economy is almost entirely reliant on tourism, which was completely evident.

As the main town, Pana hosted too many foreigners and night life for my taste. Since it was little dirtier and louder than we wanted, we headed by lancha (boat) to San Marcos, one of the 10+ villages that surround the lake. San Marcos is arguably the “hippiest” of towns around the lake. As soon as we disembarked from the boat, we were met by dreaded guys selling hemp jewelry and yogis asking if we would like to join their sunset yoga session that evening. We walked around the town, “window” shopping and exploring the plethora of cafes and, of course, organic restaurants. We grabbed a couple strawberry margaritas, soaked in some sun and enjoyed the chilled out sounds of music featuring dijiridoos before heading to our final destination, San Pedro.

San Pedro, like Pana, was the best place for night life, but was quainter and cleaner. At the base of the San Pedro volcano, it is home to foreigners and locals alike, all clearly searching to have a good time, or at least escape a bad one. We explored a bit, looking for a good hostel or hotel. We ended up finding a room, with a balcony, hammock and garden where we could lay out for the low low price of $12 each. We went for more drinks - don’t judge, it’s vacation - and food. As we dined on nachos and tapas and soaked in more sunshine, we grew quite tired so we retired to our place where we chilled out, hammock style, before we went out for the night.

We were lucky that we were there the weekend “the bar” was having its birthday party. When we walked in the door we instantly received free shots and began to dance the night away to live DJs. Since the Antigua community is freakishly small, we ran into people I had met previously and hung out with them. Sharing stories and cocktails, Bee and I were social butterflies for the night. We ended the night around a fogata (bonfire) down by the water. That night I met people from all around the world but also met people who knew exactly where I was from in the US. It just showed me how large this world is, but also how small it can be. As we walked back to our hotel, accompanied by a nice Dutchman, we ordered tacos - because there’s nothing better than greasy street tacos to soak up alcohol - and passed out until the morning.

We woke up to the sun shining, birds chirping and the breathtaking view of the lake. We both took a minute to truly appreciate where we were, to recollect our thoughts and feelings. Swinging in the hammocks looking out over the immense lake, I thought about how appreciative I am to have the opportunity to live in this country, to know this country and to help better this country, while also bettering myself. It’s truly a blessing.

After a delicious breakfast with a view, a walk around town and an hour of sunbathing it was time to take the boat back to Pana to catch the last transport out to Antigua. Whilst it was a quick 36 hours, it was a refreshing 36 hours. I got to get out of Antigua and discover a new area of Guatemala. It’ll definitely be a place I can escape to - to recollect, breathe and realize just how beauty this world is, and how beautiful Guatemala is.

7 Signs You Need To Fire Your Financial Advisor:

How To Recognize If You Should Be Making A Change

It’s a nightmare scenario for any investor. You stash away your money and assume it’s being managed properly, only to find out later that a huge chunk of it has been lost to commissions, fees, and bad investments from your financial advisor. Sadly, this happens far too often, decimating the retirement funds and futures of the victims.

At Regal Assets, our team of experts has decades of experience in the financial sector. We’ve seen it all, both the good and the bad, and have learned a great deal of valuable lessons as a result. By knowing what to look for ahead of time, you’ll be ahead of the game and in a position to protect and grow your wealth when working with your financial advisor.

Whether you currently have one and are wondering if they’re actually the best option for managing your assets, or if you are thinking about hiring a financial advisor for the first time and want to know what to look for, our list of red flags will tell you exactly what you need to know and avoid.

Lack of Transparency

Financial advisors should be generally be open and honest with you. It is a partnership between them and yourself, after all. This transparency should include their fees structure and how they are compensated. Some charge a flat fee per service, some an hourly fee based on how much time they spend with your portofolio, or some take a percentage of your total assets. Others, and these are the ones you should stay away from, get a commission every time they sell a certain product.

Regardless, they should tell you exactly how they’re paid. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand something, either. If they won’t answer or try to give you the runaround, then look elsewhere. Mike Jurs, director at Financial Engines, a San Francisco-based independent financial advisory service says “Don’t worry — you’re not being rude, it’s almost expected. After all, it’s your money and you should be sure that your advisor has your best interests at heart.”

Transparency should also extend to documentation regarding your investments. You should receive some sort of written pledge that states they will disclose any sort of conflicts of interest. They should also send you monthly statements summarizing deposits, withdrawals, and currently held positions. It should come from your brokerage firm or custodian, not your advisor’s office (some of the most common custodians include Fidelity, Charles Schwab, TD Ameritrade).

They Always Agree With You

A people pleaser does not make for an ideal financial advisor. If you’re finding that they always agree with you no matter what you say, then that’s a huge red flag. You should be hiring a financial advisor for their financial expertise and advice. They shouldn’t be afraid to challenge what you say while explaining why their viewpoint differs from yours.

Even if they do agree, they shouldn’t do it immediately and without any thought. They should think about and consider what you say and give details that support their response. If they just blindly say “yes”, then they aren’t keeping your needs in mind. It’s essentially as bad if they ignored you altogether.

No Credentials

Certified Financial Planners and Investment advisors must adhere to specified standards and be aware of the relevant regulations. They should also have the proper credentials and subsequently passed the appropriate tests to receive CFP certification. Make sure to ask your prospective advisor if they have these qualifications. You can always call the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to verify, as well.

If an advisor has trouble explaining basic concepts to you, or if they always seem to need to get back to you later with answers, then it could possibly be a sign that their knowledge isn’t up to snuff and they are missing key qualifications. The certification process for financial planners requires them to demonstrate their knowledge and pass a rigorous exam requiring an enormous amount of study, so they should know their stuff inside and out before bringing on clients.

They Ask For a Check Made Out Directly To Them

We are getting into straight up “scam” territory, here. This should be considered the ultimate warning sign. If they ask you to write them a personal check, never ever do it.

A financial advisor was just recently accused of doing just this in Texas. He had actually been an advisor in his town for many years and had built a solid reputation for himself. But then the time came when he began exploiting his elderly clients. He told them he was selling annuities. They trusted him and considered him a friend, so they wrote him a check made out directly to him. Guess what? He disappeared soon after, swindling his clients out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If you’re writing a check at any point, make sure it is to be payable to an institution, not an individual.

They Don’t Have Time For You

Your financial advisor should be client-focused, which means that the client is their top priority. This should include a clear line of communication with timely and professional responses. If your advisor doesn’t make you feel like your a priority, then you should think about switching. Your finances should be their top priority, since it’s literally their job.

They also shouldn’t be too busy to meet. Many advisors only meet with their client’s once a year to discuss their portfolios. If you’re a hands-off investor and are comfortable with the state of your assets, then this might be fine. But many people want to keep a closer tab on their wealth, and to that end you should go with an advisor that’s willing to meet more often.

When your deciding on an advisor, ask them about how frequently you can meet, and whether or not they’re ok with phone calls or emails in the meantime. You may have a question or a problem, or maybe you just want to change your investment strategy. By having a responsive advisor, you won’t have to wait weeks or months until your next meeting.

No matter what, they should still have the time for a return email or call, even if they can’t necessarily meet right away. Pedro M. Silva, a financial advisor at Provo Financial Services, in Shrewsbury, Ma., says “Depending on the size of the account and how the advisor has scaled his or her practice, clients might not be contacted as often as they would like, but a return call or email should be a basic courtesy in any industry.”

Inflated Ego

The vast majority of those seeking a financial advisor do not work in the finance industry. It makes sense. If you already knew all about investing then you wouldn’t need help. This means that, especially when starting out, clients will often have a bunch of questions for their advisor.

How your advisor responds will tell you everything you need to know about them. One that doesn’t like or encourage questions should be avoided. Even worse is an advisor that gets aggressive when you challenge them. A good advisor should always listen to what you have to say and come back with a clear explanation in a respectful manner.

Likewise, a financial advisor shouldn’t make excuses when things aren’t going well. You want an advisor that takes responsibility for mistakes, and is open and honest about why they did what they did. No one is perfect, but if they’re making decisions with sound logic and your best interests in mind, then that’s what you ultimately want.

They Talk At You, Not With You

Your financial advisor and yourself should have a healthy relationship with one another. They are there to work with you and give you advice, not take control. It’s your money, after all. The way to do this is to maintain clear two-way communication with your advisor.

If your advisor avoids conversation, tries to steer the discussion in their own direction, or uses a ton of buzzwords and jargon, then you should be concerned.

It’s also a worrying sign if your advisor talks down to you. If you aren’t a financial professional (which is most likely the case), then it’s perfectly OK to not be familiar with certain terms or products. It’s the advisor’s job to explain the details to you and help you understand it. If they can’t or won’t do this, then they aren’t going to be very helpful to you.
