One of my friends did a "Show your OC before and after their trauma" and it got me thinking.

Thinking of an elf's hair being super important. Of long hair being a symbol of pride and status in some cases.

Nina having super long hair as a witch elf, her being super proud of it, of being skilled enough that she hadn't damaged it in battle yet. We joked yesterday that Nina's kill count is probably insanely high, and she has no idea.

This is Nina nowadays. She's going through it. But losing her hair was a last year thing. She lost a Lot of her hair in a housefire, so it's super short and uneven.

Anyways. Elf hair being a symbol of power and pride and Nina being a witch elf, part of the the kill-on-sight race that is dark elf, with gorgeous, long hair, vs masquerading as a high elf, the most self-important elf race, and having short, messy hair.

Rewrite! Nora and that mysterious non canon oc I keep thinking about ( will she get out of purgatory and become canon? Who knows...)

Fun lil fact: for the majority of the rewrite Nora has her hair in a ponytail and her face tends to hide behind her cap. For practicality and making herself feel more hidden. Though at some point she realizes she doesn't have to hide anymore - mainly bc the cult leaders now know who she is and she has to face them head on anyway. So she ends up ditching the hat, allowing herself to wear something more bright. Still something practical and easy to move in, but also something to show how far she's come - not letting her own paranoia and anxiety get the best of her. She's not alone anymore! She has people she can trust and rely on! They will save Torren! And yeah! That's when she starts wearing her hair down more akin to her canon design, though very much not having the glaring The Girl issue.

Tangent time: I feel like Nora's canon design doesn't fully tell us what her character is like? Yeah, she kinda looks like Celebi with the colors, but what is she like! Like she looks like your standards girly girl, which is fine, but the plot of the game never really showcases that? It could have been fun " I look like this, but there's a lot more to me than that" story line. But they don't , alas. And to be clear, I don't hate how she looks canonically, nor do I think every character design has to be super intentional - sometimes to want a character to look cool. But with the context of Nora throughout the story, it becomes glaringly obvious that she's The Girl of our main character trio. Damian is able to have a character design change as he grows as a character, but Nora doesn't? What about her design reflects this smart, albeit competing girl that takes her role seriously? Again, it's not bad that she's designed the way she is, but the design and how Nora actually acts is kinda disconnected imo. Of course, that's just me, and I am by no means an expert here.

Rewrite! Nora's first design was pretty much made with her changes: she's a much more experienced trainer, and has been training for years now. She is VERY aware of the danger she could be in, hence why wears muted colors and wears her cap the way she does. Her outfit is meant for traveling and laying low- however, one thing that kinda breaks that is her ankle warmers. They aren't exactly the most practical thing out there, but I when designing her with picrew I genuinely just thought it was cute and gave her design more shape. So why not that be the reason for Nora? She thought it was cute, so she wore it. It isn't that outlandish to have eyes on her anyway. All in all, her initial design is meant to be very closed off- obviously of someone who has things to hide and of someone who is a bit more experienced. Nora is someone who feels like the weight of the world is on her shoulders, and for so long has felt alone in her mission. Even when she finds more people like her, she's still wary, hell probably even more stressed bc she doesn't want the two newbies to get caught ( especially Damian). She doesn't really allow herself to indulge in things she likes bc it means not focusing on her own survival. I cannot stress how stress this girl is for the majority of the plot in my rewrite. She is stressed. I think a very simple way of saying it is that Nora's first design is pretty much showing how she's surviving but not living. That's what happens when you're 16 and the world is on your shoulders.

Man, I was not expecting to ramble about Nora here. I kinda feel bad for our mystery of, but uh. She doesn't even have a name sooooooooo. She'll be fine.

Not providing translations for big chunks of distorted/otherwise weirdly typed out text. If you want your text be entirely in distorted text, or replace vowels with numbers, I can't stop you, obviously,but atleast please provide a translation. A lot of us are neurodivergent and find it hard to read this sort of text.

Using non rp related fandom hashtags. Please do not use any hashtags similar to The Magnus Archives/TMA/TMAPOD/etc on your rp blogs, it tends to clog the feed for those who don't like seeing it. If you want more engagement -join a Picrew chain!

Hi! I've actually been compiling these for forever and it's been such a challenge but I've just posted my top 5 picrew recommendations for goliaths here!

I'm going to use this ask as an opportunity though to share some picrews that could work but didn't quite make the cut to be included in the main recommendation post:

Cute DnD Character Creator by Rogue Cat Designs

Grey Skin ✅ Markings ✅ Muscles ❎ Bald ✅

Pros

This is a rarely seen full-body creator specifically aimed at making D&D characters so it has tons of high fantasy clothing and accessory options and even animal companions! It's gender neutral so can be used to make masculine, feminine or androgynous characters.

Cons

The facial markings available here are a bit different from the ones traditionally seen in official art of goliaths but the main issue with this creator is that the one body type is nowhere close to muscular and doesn't exactly scream "descended from giants" Conclusion Would work super well for a child (or maybe a half-goliath?) as long as you're open to a less traditional take on the facial markings.

Sci-Fi Fantasy Portrait Maker by Sophronist

Grey Skin ❎ Markings ✅ Muscles ❎ Bald ✅

Pros

Really decent range of markings to choose from which can be layered over each other so you can customise the markings on each part of the face. Nice and gender-neutral too.

Cons

Muscles aren't so much a concern here IMO as these are only head-and-shoulder portraits. The bigger concern is that there aren't really any true grey skintone options. The skintone shown on the right is debatably closer to black (though that might just be my PC monitor tbf) and the one on the left is a white skintone + shadows.

Conclusion

This picrew should work great for a dark skinned goliath of any gender.

Black Centered Picrew by Naylissah

Grey Skin ✅ Markings ✅ Muscles ❎ Bald ✅

Pros

I recommend this picrew all the time for its great range of options across all areas but in terms of goliaths I think these markings and this grey skin tone work pretty well!

Cons

The drawback of this picrew in terms of making goliath characters (apart from the usual lack of muscular options) is that it just has the one grey skintone and only one option for markings too (though they can be repositioned on the face as shown above)

Conclusion

Best suited for a female or feminine goliath with simple facial markings.

Pros

A choice of two grey skintones (though they are very similar), a good range of scars and these cool facial markings.

If you think these facial markings would work well for your goliath character, this picrew could be ideal for you.

Can I ask whats your process for making new ocs? Like where do you get inspiration or ideas? In general or for size specific stuff! I wanna make a new oc but i dont have any (good) ideas

well first of all, most of my OCs weren’t my idea lolol, everyone but luka and faust came from my bf’s brain and then we expanded collaboratively from there

but my general advice is to explore concepts and tropes that really resonate with you - the best OCs are the ones that come from guilty pleasures imo, doesn’t matter how cheesy or ‘cringey’ your favorite tropes are. you can also just frankenstein together a bunch of traits from other existing characters that you like and put your own personal spin on them. there’s also no pressure to have every aspect of their character figured out from the get-go; half the fun is developing them in your mind during periods of rest (road-trips are my personal favorite).

if you’re stuck on their design, i either mess around on picrew until i put together something i like, or i’ll scroll through my pinterest board of character designs that i enjoy (obviously don’t carbon copy someone else’s design, just take inspiration from little details)

for size specific stuff it’s really a matter of preference, but in general i like trying to find dynamics that i personally feel have very little to zero content in the community and seeing what i can come up with. again though i think it’s a matter of what tropes you really enjoy, whether that’s borrowers or eldritch gods. borrowers AND eldritch gods, how about THAT

i’d say the most important factor is that you’re making them only for yourself, and not thinking about whether or not they’ll be popular or well-received or whatever. make them personal, make them fun — basically just make them a source of comfort you can escape to when the real world sucks too much :-)

my personal process is just being insane all the time and doodling them whenever i have free time, that part i can’t really explain sorry lol

We ended up not doing curse of strahd but a really short oneshot instead, and it was soo much fun. i was slightly underprepared but it was fine for a oneshot. my flurry of blows killed a couple tough enemies including the final boss so i'm happy with that. our dm let us describe how we wanted to kill the enemies which was a really fun and engaging way to play imo

honestly i feel like using picrews or sims or a different character creation program is really useful for this kind of thing!! however it can absolutely be sooo rewarding to commission an artist whose work you admire.

OK SO first oc’s name is haitani reiko. if u havent already noticed she is in fact a haitani 😭 her nickname is sleeping beauty bcuz for abt like 2-4 years she’d been in a coma n shit but during a battle the haitani brothers were in against another gang she had woken up 🤯 and as the good bros they are they immediately left the battle to see their sister. so its kind of a given that theyre a bit overprotective of their lil sis. but she doesnt like how her whole identity in the gang world is being the younger sister of the haitani brothers so she wants to go out n kinda create her own identity yk? she isnt rlly a fighter but she joins a few minor gangs to get her name around. and i dont rlly think im gonna write her in anything rn cuz her character is rlly weak. but here is an old fanart i did of her :3 (i do have a picrew of her that i’ll show u at the end of this ask <3)

next is i think my fav child, futamo aisume<3333 im not even gonna lie he was kind of a self insert oc but i still love him 😭 hez written as shion’s child hood best friend, having the nickname “the great’s shadow” so hez kind of the side guy that patches up shion when hez injured, but he can still fight. he was in tenjiku w shion but once they were defeated shion kinda just left him behind (also cuz he went to jail lol) so idk prob wakasa took in futamo and brought him into brahman. hez got a similar kind of loyalty as sanzu to mikey and koko n inui and hez rlly blunt. the black cat to shion’s golden retriever imo<333

and last but not least there’s takumi! ngl i kinda just doodled him a bit in an old notebook but i loveddddd him. hez basically just bonten’s bartender, the guy who deals with everyone’s worries n someone they all trust to vent to a lot. sometimes all of bonten go to visit him at once but most of the time they all just go for a quick drink by themselves. takumi’s closest to maybe ran ig? ran’s a bit of a flirt to everyone so hez naturally like that when he meets takumi, and like takumi was kinda just like this is kinda funny, i like this guy. so he kind of matches ran’s energy at a subtle level. i wanna say takumi is an ex gang member from like a different region but when he moved to tokyo and started looking for a job, he had his connections from the past that led him to bonten.

so yeah! a bit messy kinda made some stuff up on the spot but those r my ocs<3333 love them all v much and i miss them so much my ocs era was good. so so good. but here are their designs :3 (in order of reiko, aisume and takumi)
