𓂀 THE ASTROLOGY OF BLACK PEOPLE .
AN: this is a post by a dark skin black woman of west african descent. please keep that in mind. my experiences and cultures will largely inform this post.
SOURCE FOR ART BELOW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
⭐️ PLANET RULERSHIP .
Tumblr media
the idea for this post started when i was sat thinking about how all of astro tumblr said black people are ruled by saturn.
i would like to say that's crazy! i understand the thought process, but we (black people) are not defined by our oppression and struggle! we have cultures and a multitude of other things to offer as well!
saturn rules over things like oppression and poverty. it makes sense considering the history of the black diaspora, slavery and colonialism to associate saturn with us. does saturn have a good side too? yes! however, i do not believe we are solely ruled by saturn. many other demographics could be saturnian based on their experience with oppression.
i, personally, find that the sun correlates best to black people and the black diaspora.
the most obvious reason is that our skin contains a TON of melanin, which is our natural protection from the sun! (please please please wear sunscreen though. we still need it.)
the sun is related to gold, as are black people. we have an entire country that was named the "gold coast" (present-day ghana) due to its plentiful gold reserves. many black cultures hold gold in particularly high esteem and to this day, i see black people wearing gold more than any other metal.
black people are associated with pride in ourselves and our cultures. we are noted to have rich and ancient cultures, the oldest actually. one thing the sun represents is hierarchy, and black cultures tend to have a focus on this - particularly respecting our elders.
we're known for our self-expression and dominating the arts — see: the entire music industry, the harlem renaissance, reggae, ska, samba, afrobeats, highlife, amapiano etc. it goes on. we influence culture through our self-expression and have found ways to liberate ourselves through self-expression. a great example of this is capoeira, an afro-brazilian martial art disguised as a dance. our cultures are heavily inspiring and imitated with everyone wanting to wear braids, our clothes, take part in our music and people are even obsessed with our food. the sun rules over leo and the 5h. our dominance over the arts is not to be dismissed, nor can it be ignored.
the sun rejoices in the 9h. black people have a particular relationship with religion and education. black women are the most educated group in the usa. the church has played a large role in black cultures and communities historically and still does today. we can see this most obviously with martin luther king jr. not to mention, we have our own indigenous religions that managed to survive slavery and spread from africa to the americas. there are several different religions thriving among black people - with lots of black africans taking part in both muslim and christian festivities.
the sun also exalts in aries. black people are known to pioneer many things and focus on self-determination of the diaspora. our movements inspired many other movements and our cultures have inspired many other cultures and artists.
if anything, black people are more likely to be ruled by the sun and not saturn... we are not simply suffering.
honestly we could be ruled by jupiter too (rules over 9h and 12h, rejoices in the 11h of community, the plentiful resources in africa, jupiter's exaltation in cancer....). if you have some thoughts, please share!! i'd love to talk more about this <3 i may make a separate post breaking this down.. there's a lot more to say!
⭐️ PAN AFRICANISM .
Tumblr media
Pan-Africanism is a general term for various movements in Africa that have as their common goal the unity of Africans and the elimination of colonialism and white supremacy from the continent.
SOURCE.
i looked at the charts of some of the most influential pan-africanists to find the astrological essence of the movement.
[ malcolm x, marcus garvey, kwame nkrumah, w.e.b du bois, patrice lumumba, nelson mandela, frantz fanon ]
their big 3 showed clear ketu, rahu and jupiter dominance.
ketu represents the past and liberation. rahu represents the future and innovation. it's not surprising that the nodes showed up prominently in their charts. pulling on the myth of ketu and rahu, they were separated and split into a headless body (ketu) and bodiless head (rahu). this mirrors the creation of the black diaspora, which was created due to the horros of slavery and black people being split up across the atlantic ocean. i believe both nodes showing up represents a return to wholeness that pan-africanists aimed for.
rahu also aims to critique society (seen in ardra) and revolutionise it. there is a large focus on changing society and removing its perceived injustices.
jupiter is a guru, known as "the teacher to the gods". his role is to bestow wisdom and remove ignorance. the aim of removing white supremacy from the black diaspora and from the african continent required a lot of education. most of these men were intellectuals and placed heavy emphasis on educating the black community.
⭐️ AFRO HAIR CARE .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@vindelllas post on hair in vedic astrology ends with contemplations on protective hair styles such as braids. venusian hair as venus gives curly hair and our hair is coily (the tighest form of curls) plus the adornment of braids and other african hairstyles. braids were also a status symbol in african societies such as ancient egypt (venus rules over elitism).
unfortunately, black people really hate our natural hair. we've been forced to feel ashamed of our coils and kinks and now we perpetuate these same cycles. we use relaxers that burn our scalps, fry our hair and even give us cancer... we use braiding hair that tugs at our roots causing traction alopecia and also gives us cancer. our hatred of our hair is literally killing us. it's devastating and, for some reason, still the source of major discourse when the truth is blatantly obvious.
this all causes a damaged venus. this reflects even further in the black community. the hatred of women (ruled over by venus), our bodies, our freedom etc. the blatant disrespect towards us, the harm done onto us, and the way we are controlled. we are seen as "the least desirable women" and we are constantly made fools of and degraded by our own people and other races. however, our features are copied en masse — our naturally full lips, our naturally full figures, our braids, our fashion sense. all venusian things that are copied and mimicked while we are put down and called "ugly".
unfortunately, a lot of us internalise this hatred. on the topic of hair, many women wear wigs to hide their natural hair, which they call "difficult", "ugly" and "manly". they use relaxers to achieve a straightened look, or constantly silk press their hair. it's undeniably out of self-hatred and i'm tired of pretending it's not.
it's gotten so bad that women wearing "stiff wigs" or even their natural hair, and not aligning with the goal of conforming perfectly to eurocentric ideals are deemed as "less black". it sounds crazy, but it's true. black women that wear their natural hair or wear "obvious" wigs are seen as wanting to pander to white people.... there's lots to be said, but i'll leave it there.
hair relaxers specifically cause two types of cancer — uterine (uterus) and breast cancer. it's a clear attack on women as women are the ones who use relaxers the most. same with braiding hair.
this post is very important. we need to learn to start loving our natural kinky and coily hair! it's venusian and we need to treat it as such. with love, care and devotion.
i also love this post, relating our hair's transformative qualities to mermaids. we definitely need to embrace our hair's flexibility and malleablity. it's definitely fragile, which is why we wrap it up in silks, and we need to treat our crowns with such reverence. romanticise and truly fall in love with your afro hair, ladies!! 💋

Answering witchcraft paganism FAQs~
Nobody asked me, but I'm going to share my take on these faqs I see all the time.
Before you read- I am a stranger on the internet and I am by no means a figure of authority, I have just been practicing for many years and am discussing my beliefs. That said, there are no true rules to witchcraft, other than being respectful to others' beliefs. (Unless you follow Wicca, or another very specific religion. This is not quite a free-for-all practice, but it is very freeing, do not view witchcraft/paganism as the antithesis to Christianity, its not.)
How old do I need to be to start practicing/worshipping?
Can you believe in a deity/form your own beliefs about the universe? Congrats, you can start. That being SAID do not bring anything into your home that could get you hurt (ie don't bring in crystals or tarot cards into your house if your parents are going to assume it's Satanism and kick you out, etc) and DO YOUR RESEARCH. Be wary of closed practices and scams. I started practicing bare-bones when I was like 11. I made mistakes, but I grew. Never stop learning. I know people who are raising their kids in paganism and witchcraft, so my belief is very much anyone can join. (Yes, that does mean ANYONE)
Is there any specific way that is correct?
No, to a point. Your practice is your own, there are so many labels within the community (sea witch, kitchen witch, eclectic witch, etc) because people do what works for them. There is no wrong or right way to be a witch or a pagan. Find what works best for you and be respectful of everyone else. Again, be weary of closed practices.
What is a closed practice?
A closed practice is an aspect of culture-specific witchcraft that outsiders to that culture have to be taught or invited into. Burning white sage is a closed practice to Indegenous people, dreamcatchers are a closed practice to indigenous folks as well, honey jars are closed to Hoodoo— hoodoo/voodoo is closed to a specific sect of afro-centric cultures, it's argued that working with Lilith is closed to Jewish people
I don't know much about these practices as I am culturally and ethnically white. I'm sure if you asked someone within one of these practices to explain it better to you, as long as you are respectful and kind and respect their interaction boundaries, they would be more than happy to tell you why these practices are closed. I will say that I'm pretty sure it's about cultural appropriation and how their ancestors were persecuted for doing these practices, but again, I am not in these practices, so I do not know for sure. And again BE RESPECTFUL.
Do I have to be pagan?
Absolutely not! You can be a pagan and be a witch, be a pagan and not be a witch, or be a witch and not be a pagan! I know a couple Christian Witches, and i know a Muslim Witch, and a Jewish Witch. You don't have to be religious, but if you're going to a part of this community you should at least be aware that there is a large number of religious people, but I'm sure most will welcome you with open arms regardless.
Where do I start?
Pick an aspect and start researching! Interested in tarot? Google it, buy your own deck, or use an app. Astrology? Dozens of apps and websites will let you input your birth chart and give you detailed descriptions of each sign and placement.
Don't I need to be gifted my first deck of Tarot?
I think that's the tradition, but I bought my own and I haven't been smited yet. If you're really worried about it, you can always find people through different communities who might be interested in gifting you one, but that's not always feasible for everyone. They can get expensive, and some people only want to part with their deck after they die. Just buy your own, or use a regular playing card deck, or make your own if you're crafty. (Post about this incoming)
How long do I have to practice before I'm a real witch?
Have you practiced a day? Perfect, you're a real witch. You're a /baby/ witch, but you're still a witch! As for how long you will remain a baby, I've been practicing on and off since i was like 11 (I'm in my 20s), and I still say I'm a baby half the time. It just depends on how comfortable you are with your practice, and how much you know.
How do I know if this is the right path for me?
You'll never know if you don't try! Start slow, don't dive headfirst and get into way too much that you get overwhelmed and burn out. I made that mistake over and over again
How can I be sure I'm not going to offend The Powers Of The Universe?
I'm pretty sure you'd have to actively seek out offending them in order to really do it. As I mentioned, I made lots of mistakes when I first started out. I didn't do half the research I needed to do, and I didn't really ask if deities wanted to work with me. I tried working with half of like three different pantheons at once, and while mixing pantheons is fine and relatively commonplace, trying to devote yourself to about 20 deities at once at like 15? Not a good look. I couldn't build my relationship with them and my practice was stagnant for a long time. That being said, those deities weren't offended. They weren't happy with me but I didn't get cursed or smited. When I was getting back into my practice I apologized to them, and they seem to have forgiven me. They are omnipotent, if you are trying your best, they'll know your intent. I'm sure there are people who have offended deities, as they have feelings just the same as you and I, but to my knowledge it is hard to do unintentionally.
Can I do spells for other people?
Honestly, there is no one good answer for this. I'd say it's about context. Should you spell someone to develop feelings for you because you have a crush on them? Absolutely not. That takes away their ability to consent. Do not start a relationship with a kidnapping. Can you do a spell to attract love in your life? I'd say yea, you're not targeting a specific person, but be careful with it. Your friend is going through hard times, and you want to put a luck charm on them? I'd say get their consent. You want to curse your cheating ex boyfriend? Think about your belief on karma, and go from there. Use your best judgement.
Speaking of Karma, what is the law of threefold?
That is specific to Wicca, unless you're Wiccan, don't worry about it, but I'll tell you how I understand it. It's a "rule" saying that the energy you put into the world will come back to you threefold. So if you curse someone, you will feel the curse three times as hard. I'm not Wiccan, so feel free to correct me. I don't believe in that law, I believe in nuance and that karma is more of a delivering of justice. But that's me, if you want to believe in that, you can, think about your own beliefs in karma, and spell accordingly. I personally do not follow this rule.
Do I have to do spells?
I mean, no, it's a pretty big part of witchcraft but if you just like one aspect, sure, who am I to tell you that's not allowed? I'm just a person on the internet.
How do I do spells?
Spells can look however you want. There are a million and a half posts on here about spellwork. It can be a jar, a candle, a food, a chant, whatever. It can take a lot out of you if you're just starting out, so be careful. I'd say steer clear of huge undertakings until you're more comfortable.
What is shifting?
I am the complete wrong person to ask on this as I do not believe in this. In my opinion it is just lucid dreaming, but again, I do not believe in shifting, so ask someone who does.
Again, these are just my opinions, feel free to comment anymore that you may have!

Astrology: Leo♌️, Sagittarius♐️, Pisces♓️
Hi, pile one! The best way you can connect with the universe is to face the darkest parts of it (or yourself) head on. Meditating sounds like a perfect way for you to tap into Spirit’s voice. However, I can sort of tell you are very restless when you try to meditate. Your mind has a lot to say and it's not always fun to listen too. Remember they are just thoughts, my friend. They aren't representative of you or who you want to be because thoughts are just thoughts. The longer you sit with them, the easier it will be to connect to your spirit guides. Once you’ve embraced the storm of your mind, it will eventually aim you towards the eye of this storm. The calm will envelop you. Universe will be there in the eye of your mind. It will be ready to communicate clearly and it will be brighter and louder than the darkness you feel. It has so much it wants to tell you. Spirit really wants to show you the beauty of the world and the beauty inside of you. You shine so bright, you are like the sun. Remember the brightest stars cast the darkest shadows. Light cannot exist without dark. The darkness in your mind is just as beautiful as the cosmos above. I really love to appreciate the scariest parts of life and most people aren’t comfortable doing that so it will probably take a lot of repetition to make it through the storm. Just know the universe is smitten with every part of you. Allow yourself to be devoted to Spirit. Allow the universe to circulate warmth and tenderness to you.

Astrology: Taurus♉️, Aries♈️, Capricorn♑️
Hello, pile 2! One thing I’d like to immediately mention about your reading is that there is a VERY heavy abrahamic religious vibe coming from these cards. The crystal you chose is a broken angelite tower and that makes me think you used to be christian, jewish or muslim. Alternatively, you could still be devoted to your religion but could be questioning your faith as of recent. To connect with your Deity better will take a bit of adjustment. You may feel alienated from your relationship with them. I suggest taking a more friend-like approach to connecting with your guide. They aren’t expecting you to put them on such a high pedestal anymore. Move away from the traditional approach of connecting with your God. They want to be your friend. Someone you can confide in when you are scared, sad, angry or betrayed. They do not want you to fear their opinion of you or your actions. They love you so deeply and truly. That means you can be yourself with them. You do not need to filter for someone who loves you so unconditionally. AND feel free to talk to them everywhere! Especially, when you are doing selfcare!!! If you are making a meal for yourself, reading your favorite book or taking a bath/shower. They want you to talk to them when you are doing everyday stuff. They are always with you but not in the sense that they are hovering over your shoulder waiting for you to mess up. They are with you as a companion. They see you as a dear friend. You are so important to them. You will not be punished for being yourself.

Crystal: Amethyst
Astrology: Cancer♋️, Libra♎️, Aquarius♒️
Hey there, pile 3! You are incredibly spiritual and incredibly in tune with the universe. I see that you are an old soul. One that has seen many lives and you are probably aware of that fact. I also see that you have been stuck AF recently. You are so confused on how to take your spiritual path forward. You have been doing a lot of work without any reward. Which to be honest, sounds like a huge bummer and I’m so sorry you are feeling so frustrated with your spirituality. Before you continue reading this, know you are not gonna like this answer. My device crashed when I tried to write your reading down which tells me you might not be ready to hear this answer. The cards are asking you to do something kind of different and a little difficult. You can best connect with spirit if you ground yourself more in reality. Connect with friends, family, coworkers or literally anyone. Take a walk outside and do breathing exercises instead of meditation. Your soul is already so strongly connected and you keep trying to connect it more but I’m gonna be for real here. You have hit the ceiling when it comes to your upper chakras. If you were to continue it would be extremely detrimental to your mental health. The more you pull your soul to earth and the more you participate in the physical you will realize that the earth is magical! People are magical! Reality is magical! I know you want to escape from some things by pulling yourself into the astral realm. It isn’t going to move your spirituality forward. I’m really sorry I know it heckin sucks. I know this lesson all too well myself. I promise it’ll be worth your effort to spend some time in reality with your loved ones.

PILE 4
Tumblr media
Crystal: Howlite
Astrology: Scorpio♏️, Gemini♊️, Virgo♍️
Pile 4, you are an enigma for sure. Welcome to your reading. First thing I’m gonna address about your connection to spirit is that it is strongest when you are alone. All the chatter of everyone else’s souls’ block your soul from truly being integrated with the universe. You have such strong love for everyone around you despite the constant chatter. You care so deeply for your connections in reality. You really are the biggest sweetie pie ever. You might ignore Spirit by accident because you are so intent on listening to your loved ones. You adore talking with them. All you want is to give them gifts and you constantly think about them. Your cards are not telling you to stop loving and listening. They are instructing you to have time with yourself. Maybe setting aside an hour or two a day just for you. This does not have to be a consistent schedule you follow. Just whenever you start beating yourself up or you start to feel uncomfortable in any way, that will be your queue to stop whatever you are doing for others and start giving to yourself. You’ll know what you need if you allow yourself space to think and get away from the chatter. You don’t necessarily have to set boundaries with anyone around you because I think you are the only one who is crossing your own boundaries here. You love everyone so expansively and honestly. It is beautiful how deep your admiration can go. Please pay close attention to when you start stomping on your own boundaries. You don’t even really notice when you do it and that sounds like it’s gonna be the hardest part to get past. Keep a keen eye out for how you treat yourself when you are busy loving others.

( tw: abandonment, adoption, death )
Aylin’s life has always revolved around proving herself. There isn't much known about her life before she became a Carrigan other than that she was born in Istanbul, Turkey. Adopted by the Carrigan's when she was turning two years old, it's uncertain as to why she was abandoned, but when she was found wandering around a marketplace, she was taken to a local orphanage when no one came to claim her. Moving to Aurora Bay was more than a culture shock, but thankfully, she was young enough to assimilate and her adoptive parents was veterans when it came to bringing children into their home. While her adopted home life was full of genuine happiness and love, there was always the feeling that Aylin had to be the best at everything she did. Her parents filled her life with activities; swimming, gymnastics and especially ballet; her favorite of them all.
Full of encouragement, her parents enthused that she should continue and enhance her ballet skills and soon she was fast-tracked to be a lead ballerina. And for so many years, this strict life of dance was all she knew. Graduating high school with good enough grades, the plan was to continue on dancing in college. But life never goes according to plan. When practising relentlessly in a pas de deux, Aylin took a spill and it resulted in a severe head injury that required surgery. Her parents, while supportive, decided that maybe she needed a break from ballet while she recovered.
As her recovery progressed, Aylin realised how much time had gone by without her knowing. She had missed proms, dates, boys and parties; all the things that make up a childhood. After a lot of thought, she decided to retire from dancing and study psychology at the USC. Well, it was her freshman year that she met a senior studying business who charmed her so hard that they were married within a year. Aylin had experienced what she thought was love before, but never like this. She was enamoured from the moment they met. And while she knew her parents would never bless their marriage for being so quick, it didn’t matter. He was all she needed now.
When it came to arrange the wedding, Aylin had her heart set on finding her birth mother and inviting her. She never told anyone in her family, lest they think they weren't enough for her. There was a deep need to understand where she came from. Since she was now over the age of eighteen, she was able to do so. Despite the protests of her soon-to-be husband, Aylin tried her best to find her mother but could only ever find her name. Sabiha Sadik. Those she contacted advised that her mother was no longer alive and this left Aylin heartbroken. When it came time for her to change her name, she decided to add her birth mother's name at the end of her name, instead of taking her new husbands. It caused many arguments between the two, but Aylin held steadfast that she needed to honor where she came from.
After they were married and both graduated, Ari and Aylin moved to Silicon Valley, where her husband was in deep in developing new businesses from the ground up. In Aylin's mind, however, this meant settling down and starting a family. However, her husband received a promotion, one that he refused to turn down even if it required traveling most of the time and leaving no space for kids anytime soon. It took long hours of ‘mature’ discussions before the two finally came to an agreement, one that Aylin wasn’t entirely content with but she was not about to end her marriage over it, otherwise her meticulous ten-year plan would have definitely fallen apart.
When Ari and Aylin returned back to Silicon Valley from Aurora Bay for his work, she thought it was the right choice. She was doing everything she could for her marriage and it looked like it was working. But it all came out on her 30th birthday. The deep dark secret that had haunted their marriage finally came out. Once Aylin had learned of the emotional affair Ari had with his co-worker, she couldn't stay. It was the betrayal, the lying - the thought of denying herself for so long to make a marriage work that was doomed from the start. Without a second thought, Aylin packed her stuff and moved back into the holiday house in her home town.
born in istanbul, turkey — she was adopted by the carrigan’s when she was two years old. she has lived in aurora bay for most of her life until she went away to college at university of southern california. she then lived in silicon valley, los angeles until recently.  — ( possible connections: old friends, childhood crushes, chance encounters, college buddies from usc )
she’s the adopted sister of gavin & hunter carrigan and child of the carrigan’s, who are obviously quite well-known around aurora bay. she’s more reserved and not interested in the spotlight.  — ( possible connections: family friends, connections through gavin / thomas )
( tw: injury ) used to train to be a ballerina until she took a massive fall and suffered a head injury that required surgery. she still requires occasional trips to the doctor to manage the headaches she suffers from.  — ( possible connections: ex-dance friends, ex-pas de deux partner, friends from around the hospital. )
due to the uncovering of her husband's emotional affair with a co-worker, aylin has taken a temporary separation from her marriage. since she has been married for just under ten years, she hasn't been single in quite some time. — ( possible connections: flirtations, blind dates gone bad (probably), friends who encourage her to get back out there )
currently working as a psychologist at her own firm in town, she specialises in relationship counselling. she’s renting a room in a larger office building that houses a multitude of businesses. her clients range from any age, orientation or stage of life. — ( possible connections: client couples (both together or separately), colleagues, other professionals in the building, work friends )
lives in aurora bay drive and you can oftentimes find her going for walks with her dog early in the morning, especially around aurora bay lighthouse. she’s definitely the type to be involved in any committee or club that is nearby, anything to get out of the house. — ( possible connections: good/bad neighbors, fellow dog owners, people around town, wine club member, book club member. )
around town, you can usually find her sitting at driftwood cafe enjoying a nice cup of coffee (with oat milk), grabbing daily baked goods from sweet nothings bakery or attending her regular kickboxing and pilates classes at titanium gym. — ( possible connections: kickboxing partners, regular server at driftwood or sweet nothings, chance encounters )
loves cooking & baking, especially for other people. if she ever finds out that you’re without a dinner, expect a care package delivered first thing the next day. food is her love language, especially from her home country. — ( possible connections: mom friend, therapist, dear god let this woman feed you plz )

The Last Man by Mary Shelley
Last month @spacecasehobbit asked for an allusion to put into a writing project, and I recommended the book in the title…without ever having read it myself, which I then began to think this would not do. That's why I started reading it, and can now report that it took me about one month to finish. The website How Long To Read dot Com estimates the length of this book to be about 180,000 words, that makes it about two and a half Frankensteins, and very slightly shorter than either Jane Eyre or Notre-Dame de Paris.
Apparently assigned reading for most universities now require literature students to read a novel of this length once a week? I would not be able to keep up that pace, penetrate the 19th-century language, and appreciate what I'm reading.
On the one hand, I can understand why Frankenstein became the book that Mary Shelley was best-known for: shorter, intense, iconic. The Last Man is such a florid bummer, but I also think is the better showcase of both Mary Shelley's imagination and her observations of the human condition.
Both narrator and author have such a humane worldview and everybody is characterized with an almost Kids Gloves compassion...even as the clearly-positioned antagonists are Muslims, Irish, and/or immigrants (except, of course, when it's 1,400 British people doing the immigration through France and Switzerland.) The text and central cast and the plot events keep going "oh poor things" but except for the black hole sun, the pestilential plague, and climate change—it's always the other that started conflicts with stalwart proper English ex-royals who are only trying to survive the apocalypse just the same as everybody else. /s Spoilers under cut:
One notable exception is the cult-leader Englishman in Volume III, he is depicted as so evil that it's jarring. The Marie Antoinette Expy who married into English monarchy wasn't written as evil. The homewrecking romantic rival of all the homegirls and gays, Princess Evadne, was never written as evil. Lucy Clayton-Martin's abusive husband is told/shown to be so, but not as overtly condemned in text. The random Black man in England who breathed directly into Lionel's mouth for no-homo reasons before vanishing from the story was a little weird but not highlighted as a bad person, just a random person. The elected Protectorate of England, Ryland, who quit when the apocalypse was only just starting to make his job difficult, he died alone pathetically but the narrator/story didn't underline Ryland as an evil person. Fuck that cultist Englishman, though!
Readers might be frustrated by every initiative of the narrating character takes getting rendered futile two seconds later: Lionel the Narrator wants to avenge his father on Adrian's life? Adrian's just so darn sweet that Lionel changes his religion to the touch of his hand; Lionel roofies his sister to try to get her back to England from Greece where she wants to bury herself in her deceased husband's grave? She drowns herself the moment she wakes up so Lionel might as well just not roofied his sister. Lionel makes a power-grab to protect the far more qualified and experienced Adrian from getting elected Protectorate of England during a global pandemic? Adrian wins by popular vote anyway and then doesn't even hold it against Lionel after one stern and curt hallway chat, they're besties again.
The only time there are serious lasting consequences of a character decision (trying to sail to Greece at his 15-year-old niece Clara's request to visit her parents' graves) it seems in service to a purposely dissatisfying ending.
And for those who are into the apocalyptic fiction side of things: None of that weird stuff with the five suns or rapid climate change ever gets explained, even when they eventually get Merrival the astrology expert. That didn't bother me at all, because it's set somewhere between the years 2073 and the 2098 or so, but typhus and tuberculosis are still apparently incurable mysterious diseases in addition to the worldwide plague…because this was published in 1826 so my suspension of disbelief go nyooooom until the very end.
Aside from that warning
—that overall this epic novel is just, such a bummer (and yeah that one part where an unnamed Black man character just kisses Lionel on the mouth or breathes into his mouth and then Lionel pushes him away so he goes away…what…Lionel didn't even catch plague from that like he was afraid of, why did Mary Shelley write that happen? random vertical mouth-to-mouth from side characters never seen again)—
I think that vibe is the point of such a long book: that there's love and frustration and wars and politicking, long-held grudges get redeemed only by Apocalyptic pressure, and then opportunistic cult leaders are really very annoying. Right now I am into reading how human joy and agony and human life and politicking just sucks but the best thing we do is witness and testify to it anyway because it all still matters beyond reason. and also five suns in the sky sometimes because, nobody knows.
Mary Shelley might not have predicted the invention of airplanes, advanced medical treatments for tuberculosis or typhus, or the true abolition of monarchies…but this apocalyptic novel is very 21st century in mood.

If you ask people on here about some Salafist Jihadi suicide bombing they will very accurately discuss the geopolitical context of colonialism and the petro-kleptocracies Western powers ally with in the Middle East to get our oil fix. They may mention how Salafism has been promoted at some times by western powers as a counter to communism. If they are really up on their game they will dissect jihadi-salafi ideology as a modern political movement with a clearly modern, political lineage. What they won't do is say some stupid shit about how Muslims blow them selves up to get with 70 virgins in paradise, because that is stupid, and reductionist, and isn't an explanation that actually explains the world and the way it works. In short, people will, correctly, look at religious fundamentalism and place it in it's proper historical and political context without making broad essentialist claims about how modern people's behavior can be trave to some timeless theological essence of a religion. This is a good, skeptical, rigorous approach.
But when asked about why say, evangelical Christians support Israel's occupation of the West Bank, people become credulous and will absolutely believe that details of Evangelical eschatology explain the political behavior of 30% of the American public. And that's just...well like I said, it is credulous. And reductionist, and it isn't the way the world works, and it doesn't actually explain the world or human behavior. Because American Evangelical fundie assholes are as much creatures of politics as Wahabbi fundie assholes.
Let's take support for Israel. This is something where leaders of the Evangelical movement like Jerry Falwell very deliberately tried to influence their congregants to a certain perspective. And I would submit that this was because of politics - because evangelical leaders saw Israel as an ally against communism, and then, in the 90s, as an ally against Islam in the creepy existential struggle the global right was and is trying to make the defining conflict of our times. The weird shit about Zionism being necessary for the rapture is, in this explanation, a post hoc justification for their political position, a way of finding a supposed Biblical basis for what they want to believe anyway.
And I think this is how these assholes mostly work. Christian Nationalism is not a purely theocratic movement trying to institute Biblical Law, but also quasi fascist nationalist movement that sees their vision of America as divinely ordained. In many cases, their theology flows from their politics, not the other way around. It is a way of sanctifying conservative politics and calling them God's Will.
Basically, their view is that the power structures of American Society - Racial Hierarchy, patriarchal families, capitalism - are sacred, and they build their theology around that. This is the way it was in the 19th century where groups like the Southern Baptists were founded by slaveholders to create a Christianity that would defend and uphold slavery against alternative theological interpretations that said 'maybe owning people is wrong'.
Thus the best way to understand them is not through the post hoc theology and details of scriptural interpretation but through looking at what power structures that theology sanctifies and defends. This explains their actual behavior - why they embraced Divorcee Ronald Reagan and his astrology loving wife over pillar of the church and possible living saint Jimmy Carter, why they supported Donald Trump over a literal Sunday School Teacher, why they give away AR-15s in Church. It explains why they will ally with literal Atheist activist James Lindsay against people in their own churches who are attempting to achieve racial reconciliation or at least acknowledge the extent to which their religious tradition was founded by slaveholders. It also explains why they are never going to drop out of society and live like monks, because the banal comfort and perceived safety of American suburbia is sacred to them. Theirs is a small, weak and false god, thankfully.

Girl, no matter how progressive Asian moms are. It’s literally always a shock for them when they learn that their child wants to marry someone who’s not from their own country lol! My mom is literally one of the coolest mom out there! My brothers gf is basically like family! We go out for dinners, shopping or movies together and both of them are in uni (my brother and his gf). But the moment she learnt some astrologer say that I’ll probably end up marrying someone who’s not from my country, she straight up denied. And I’m 22! But I know she’ll be super accepting and supportive of that when or if it happens. So that’s basically every Asian parent. They’ll always want to have someone familiar because it’ll be easy for them to simply communicate or have things in common.
Ah I think you say that related to the Koreans anons asks about it! I saw your ask that says that not only Koreans want virgin women but also a lot of other Asian cultures. I agree on that, but I couldn't really say anything from it because I'm not from Asia, I am not Asian, and I never lived in another Asian country. I spoke about Korea because I lived there for some months and I got some experiences there. But it is true, and you seem to be Asian, and you are also stating the same thing.
But there are a lot of other cultures and religions that think the same thing about virginity or marrying someone with the same culture/ ethnicity/ religion. My best friend is Kabyle, and her family is muslim. She is in a relationship with a Caucasian and he is an Atheist. Her mother does not support the relationship but thinks she doesn't have to say much about her daughter's relationships. I guess it's complicated for both sides (parents and children).
Thank you for sharing your experience too :)

Berk Atan as Prince Hamid Osmanoğlu
Disclaimer: this character profile was created specifically to fit Prince Hamid on Meant To Be universe . I unfortunately don't own the character, I don't assume to know everything about him and I have no intention to affirm this is exactly who he is and how other people should write him. I'm merely a hardcore enthusiast of this lovely character and I do my best to keep his essence while adding a few headcanons of my own.
Name: Hamid Osmanoğlu
Nationality: Turkish
Birthdate: December 3, 1991.
Hometown: Istanbul, Türkiye
Current Residence: Ithaca, NY, USA
Occupation: Envoy of Türkiye in the United States of America, graduate student of MBA Economics and Management at Cornell University
Talents/Skills: public speaking, a knack for languages, charm, cooking, self-defense and combat skills.
Parents: Murat Osmanoğlu and Raisa Doğan-Osmanoğlu
Siblings: Nesrin Osmanoğlu-Aksoy, Malak Osmanoğlu, Sevim Osmanoğlu.
Closest relatives: Ahmet and Halime Osmanoğlu (uncle and aunt), Osman Osmanoğlu (grandfather - deceased), Kaan Aksoy (brother in-law).
Background: First born of Ambassador of Türkiye in Australia Murat Osmanoğlu and prosecutor Raisa Doğan-Osmanoğlu, Hamid is easy going, perceptive and polite, has the ability to make friends everywhere he goes and charms everyone with his sense of humor and kind heart. With an impressive wit and knack for languages, he's fluent in seven languages (Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi, Mandarin and Spanish) aside from his native tongue. He fell in love with International Relations when he was nine and studied Economics and Finance at Bahcesehir University (2008-2011), hoping to follow his father's footsteps and become a diplomat.
To please his mother, he studied Law in Cambridge (2012-2015), worked with her for six months and quit to spent a month traveling with his father. He returned to Cambridge to get a Msc in International Relations and Politics (2016-2018), getting his first job at UK Parliament, where he worked with Earl Vincent Foredale.
He enrolled in MBA Economics and Management at Cornell University (2018-2021) and now works as an envoy of Türkiye in the USA, taking a job as legal advisor right after that.
What's his family like?
The Osmanoğlu family (on his father side) is composed by direct descentants from the House of Osman. When the Ottoman Empire fell, his grandfather Sehzade Osman was exiled in the UK with his family, then moved to the United States, where he married and lived most of his life. Most of his relatives live in Germany, UK or USA, but they still gather every year for festivities. All Osmanoğlu members follow Muslim traditions, but living in western countries made them inclined to a modern lifestyle.
The Doğan family (on his mother side), however, is more traditional. Mostly composed by women, they live in the same neighborhood and gather around at least twice per month. Filthy rich, pragmatic and meddlesome, they often interfere on younger relatives career choices, friendships and relationships, calling family meetings and interventions whenever they see fit. Though Hamid loves his mother and aunts dearly, their intrusive habits are among the reasons why he moved out of his family's house and doesn't have plans to live permanently in Turkiye again.
Favourite childhood memory: sailing with his father, grandfather and uncle.
Nicknames: Aslan (among the men in his family), Osman (among friends at school/university because of the name on his football jersey), Hamidciğim (most women in his family call him that, but according to him, this petname sounds more endearing to him when Daphne calls)
Astrology sign: Sagittarius sun, Aquarius rising, Cancer moon
Hobbies: Driving, fishing, reading, cooking, MMORPG
Relationship status: In a relationship with Daphne Wang
Top 5 songs:
Burcu Güneş - Sen Benimsin, Ben Seninim
Emre Aydın - Hoşçakal
Paul McCartney - My Love
Coldplay - A Message
Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
Favourite books:
The Twenty-One Balloons by Pene du Bois
The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk
Poems of Nâzım Hikmet (1986 edition)
Favourite movies:
Psycho (1960)
Spirited Away (2001)
Sonbahar (2008)
Favourite TV shows:
He likes most cooking TV shows, but his favourite is Masterchef Kids (he is amazed by talented children). From Netflix, his favourites are Sex Education, Aşk 101 and The Crown. But his all time favourites are period dramas (Magnificent Century, Magnificent Century: Kösem, The Great Seljuks: Guardians of Justice, Kuruluş Osman, Reign, The Tudors, The Spanish Princess...), He is also into K-Drama and Chinese drama because of Daphne and his sisters, but he only watches with them.
Biggest guilty pleasure:
watching Daphne's trashy TV reality shows while eating greasy food. He's not entirely ashamed of the greasy food and says it motivates him to exercise more in the next day, but will blantantly deny liking Love Island, Love is Blind and Say Yes To The Dress.
Sweet or savoury?
Normally he says both, but when push comes to shove, he'll choose savoury.
Favourite food:
Menemen, kofte burger, ramen, baklava
Favourite drinks:
Non-alcoholic - Turkish coffee, cappucino, Turkish tea, pomegranate juice, strawberry daiquiri mocktail
Alcoholic - Irish coffee, rakı, wine
Most treasured possessions:
A Ducati Panigale V4R and A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Zeitzone watch with his initials engraved in the back.
Close Friends:
Sevim Osmanoğlu (OC), Yusuf Konevi, Ali Koveni (OC), Sanem Konevi (OC), Veronica Dantas (OC), Bartholomew Chambers.
Goals for the future:
Travel to Sub-Saharan Africa, take Daphne to travel with him more often, buying an apartment in London.
Dog lover or cat lover?
Both (don't expect him to choose)
Early bird or night owl?
Early bird (unless he's jetlagged)
How does he relax after a bad day?
When he's alone, he goes jogging or driving to clear his head then finds something to eat. When he's with Daphne, he stays home with her, preferably resting his head on her lap as they watch movies.
Personality: ENFP-A (Assertive Campaigner)
Campaigners (ENFPs) are true free spirits – outgoing, openhearted, and open-minded. With their lively, upbeat approach to life, they stand out in any crowd. But even though they can be the life of the party, Campaigners don’t just care about having a good time. These personality types run deep – as does their longing for meaningful, emotional connections with other people.
One random headcanon:
During his teenhood, he used to play MMORPG with then Prince Liam of Cordonia and Drake Walker during late nights. He's not as close to the King of Cordonia as he used be, but they're still good friends. He attended the King's coronation, the King's engagement parties to Lady Madeleine and Lady Jade, the bachelor party in Paris and wedding to Queen Jade. He was also invited to the bachelor + bachelorette party in Vegas, but politely declined because he was preparing himself for the interviews for the MBA at Cornell University.
