Ian McDonald's "The Wilding"
Tumblr media
I'll be in TUCSON, AZ from November 8-10: I'm the GUEST OF HONOR at the TUSCON SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION.
Tumblr media
Ian McDonald is one of those absurdly brilliant novelists that just leave me wondering the actual fuck he manages it. How does he cover so much ground, think up so many compelling characters, find so many gracenotes, conjure up so many complicated emotions?
McDonald burst on the scene in the late 1980s, with the 1988 novel Desolation Road and then his 1989 Out On Blue Six, a slick, stylized cyberpunk-meets-Orwell tale that overflowed with beautiful prose, technomysticism, and sly jokes that hid sneaky truths that hid even more sly jokes:
https://memex.craphound.com/2014/01/20/out-on-blue-six-ian-mcdonalds-brilliant-novel-is-back/
By my count, McDonald has now published twenty books – mostly novels, but a couple short story collections (and the most amazingly demented, Tom-Waits-inflected teddybear murder comic imaginable, 1994's Kling Klang Klatch):
https://irishcomics.fandom.com/wiki/Kling_Klang_Klatch
McDonald's work is truly globespanning. While he's made his mark on the Martian soil, and overtaken the moon with the Luna trilogy (his definitive rebuttal to Heinlein's Moon Is a Harsh Mistress) he is widely adored and much-awarded for the glittering, futuristic versions of Brazil (Brasyl), Tanzania (the Chaga series), and India (River of Gods).
Indeed, McDonald's imagination has roamed so far over the Earth and the solar system that it's possible to overlook his fantastic reimaginings of Ireland, the land where he was raised. There's his Philip K Dick Award-winning 1991 novel King of Morning, Queen of Day, a swirling, mythopoeic novel of Celtic mysticism:
https://www.baen.com/king-of-morning-queen-of-day.html
And then there's 1992's Hearts, Hands and Voices, which is lowkey one of the best novels I have ever, ever read – a scorching science fictional allegory for The Troubles, but with the gnarliest biotech weirdness you can possibly imagine:
https://archive.org/details/heartshandsvoice0000ianm/mode/2up
McDonald's books cover so much goddamned ground, but one feature they all share is a prose styling wherein every sentence is at least 20% poetry, a fraction that somehow, impossibly, rises to as much as 150% in certain especially shiny passages.
Like this passage, which opens The Wilding, McDonald's new horror novel that marks his first return to Ireland since 1992:
Autumn lay on the great bog in silvers and tans, late purples and duns.
The sun rose above the tall ash saplings and feral sycamore. It called the birds into full voice. Stabbing shrills, tumbles of notes, the flutes of dove-call, frantic ticking hisses, song upon song. In hedgerows and copses, among the pale foliage of the birches, in the weave of deep willow and the bramble fastnesses, each bird called and was heard. In this season the peatland held the day's warmth through the night and on the bright, clear mornings rivers of mist formed, filling the subtle hollow places in the exposed cuttings, the bogs and fields. High sun would dispel it but at this hour half of Lough Carrow lay mist-bound. Each blade of grass hung heavy with dew, the clumps of sedges were already browning, the bracken curling and crisping.
A pair of horns lifted above the willow scrub and out-grown ash hedges of the Wilding. Polished tips caught the low sun and kindled as bright and keen as spears.

Oof.
I would drop everything to read Ian McDonald's grocery lists but after that opening, I wasn't going to put this one down, and I didn't, reading the whole thing on yesterday's flight home from my gigs in Atlanta this week.
The Wilding is (I'm pretty sure?) McDonald's first horror novel, and it's fucking terrifying. It's set in a rural Irish peat bog that has been acquired by a conservation authority that is rewilding it after a century of industrial peat mining that stripped it back nearly to the bedrock. This rewilding process has been greatly accelerated by the covid lockdowns, which reduced the human footprint in the conservation area to nearly zero.
The story's protagonist is Lisa, a hard-case Dubliner who came to the bog to do community service after a career as a crime syndicate driver for hire, a woman who never met a car she couldn't boost and pilot in or out of any tight situation. After years in the bog, she's ready to start a new life, studying Yeats at university, indulging a late-discovered love of poetry that has as much to do with her redemption as her years in the wild.
Lisa's last duty before she leaves the bog and goes home to Dublin is leading a school group on a wild campout in one of the bog's deep clearings. It's a routine assignment, and while it's not her favorite duty, it's also not a serious hardship.
But as the group hikes out to the campsite, one of her fellow guides is killed, without warning, by a mysterious beast that moves so quickly they can barely make out its monstrous form. Thus begins a tense, mysterious, spooky as hell story of survival in a haunted woods, written in the kind of poesy that has defined McDonald's career, and which – when deployed in service of terror – has the power to raise literal goosebumps.
There's a lot of fantasy that deals with Celtic mythology, including McDonald's own King of Morning, Queen of Day, but the vibe of that stuff tends to the heroic and romantic – sure, there's the odd banshee, but in the main, it's mischievous wee people, pookas, and leprechauns. More fey than fear.
But Irish mythology in its raw form is terrifying. The monsters of Irish storytelling are grotesque, mean, remorseless, and come in every shape and size. Some authors have done well by going back to the bestiary for the deep cuts. When I was a kid, I must have read John Coyne's Hobgoblin fifty times (mostly because it was about D&D, which I was obsessed with). I haven't read this one since I was about 12, and I have no idea if it'd hold up today, but it left me with a deep appreciation of the spooky multifariousness of monsters who dwell in Ireland's bogs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobgoblin_(novel)
The Wilding is a suspense novel, which means there's no way to really sum up the plot without spoiling a lot of the affect, but suffice to say that McDonald brings large swathes of deep Irish lore to the surface, and it had me reading as fast as I could and wanting to put the book down and hide.
What a writer McDonald is! The fact that this is the same guy who wrote last year's stunning secret-history/solarpunk/uncategorizable wonder that was Hopeland beggars belief:

Read you some Ian McDonald novels, is what I'm trying to say. This one is only available in the UK, if that's not where you are, consider mail-ordering it. Looks like they've got stock at Forbidden Planet for £19 plus £18 shipping to the US. Worth every penny:

have you ever got any cosmetic work done (surgical/non-surgical)? what is your beauty maintenance routine? what are some stuff that wealthier ppl know about that most don’t regarding beauty/skin/hair/hygiene/diet/fitness? sorry it’s so many questions. i love your blog so much btw I’ve learned a lot from you :)🩷
nope, never had surgery or anything too invasive. I really don’t need it haha, losing weight, fixing my skin and growing my hair out did wonders for me. I’ve had collagen pumped into my skin for some acne scars I had but that was a useless procedure, this is back when I was 18. I’ve done exilis and em sculpt which I’ve mentioned below, I’ve gotten laser done (useless), I had IVs for semaglutide (useless). I think that’s about it.
beauty maintenance routine:
wax every 1.5 months
thread and wax my face every Sunday
face masks 2x week
hair mask 1 x week
high frequency if I feel like my skin needs a push (I have a wand at home)
gel polish every month
minoxidil for hair growth
I FaceTime my dermat once a month or once in two months
things that wealthy people do that normally people don’t know about… the problem is that everything is public these days. Any Jane can get filler and collagen therapy now and in certain elitist families, there is a sense of disdain about that. Beauty is a competition, it’s a very hush hush business and most try to be as discreet as possible.
I’ve seen lots of nose jobs and chin jobs that these younger girls get done in their late teens or early 20s to improve their prospects for fame (very common in the entertainment families). But with legacy family businesses, among the older women, it will be one of two extremes- a horrible face lift and smudged make up or all natural face yoga and black magic that they swear by. Baby Botox is also huge with the younger wives but they never get it done in India, they always go to LA/ NYC / and absolute worst case Dubai. You really cannot afford to be 35 and botched. The reality is that with huge legacy families what you don’t have is time. Time for recovery I mean, because for those few months you cannot be seen publicly. For most families this is impossible- there are constant engagements, philanthropic activities (PR), weddings and parties to attend - so whatever they get done, they ensure that the down time is very very short. That’s also why most of them have consistent “natural” wellness routines like getting massages weekly. emsculpt and exilis are a big secret (I’ve done both). I’m writing a blog post about it in real time. Downtime is zero. A lot of women also get exilis done for their vaginas to make it tighter.
I have cousins who have MUAs on a retainer basis. Regardless of how big or small the event is, they ensure that they’re looking glam at all times if they’re going to be socialising. I personally think that’s insane and I’m very good at my beating my face so I never resorted to doing this for every occasion but yes this is common.
diet - I’ll be honest, most girls will very rarely touch food. If we’re going out for dinner we normally go for Japanese because it’s a little lighter. They smoke/ vape a lot which in turn suppresses appetite.
what I plan to get done soon:
acne scar treatment (I have very slight scarring only on one cheek because I sleep on my side)
hydrafacial
ultrasound for double chin (I don’t have a crazy double chin but I do want my face to be a little more snatched without fillers and Botox)
Things I know I will get done at some point:
PRP facials
micro needling
emsculpt again (like before my wedding whenever that happens)
Botox just in between my eyebrows because I frown when I’m listening
some treatment for my laugh lines at some point in my life
tbh the best beauty tip I can give you is start working out young. I’ve seen so many women not go back to their pre-baby weight, struggle with their health which inevitably fucks with your appearance, and try all sorts of stupid things when they could literally just start working out and watch their body transform in a few months.
also, don’t get fillers done impulsively. It looks ridiculous unless you have the right doc and 8/10 times you don’t. try to stick to your ethnicity as much as possible. As an Indian, the closest inspo for me is Middle Eastern because I have similar features (full brows, full lips and big eyes). But if I try getting Korean style plastic surgery I’m going to look daft.

Seven
(Donna Beneviento x fem!reader)
part2
Tumblr media
*image creds to the owner
Word count: 1040
This story is a bit angsty, I made it thinking in the song Seven by Taylor Swift and there's the idea of The Lakes by Taylor Swift, which is running away together. This story is Donna telling about this girl that was in her life ever since she was born until 14 years old. It's a short story, I tried to make this sweet since there isn't a "happy" ending. Anyway, I hope you like it💜
ps: the songs audios are at the end
----------------------------------------------------
Donna didn't usually receive guests in her house but Alcina called the day before to ask if she could watch over her daughters during the morning as she had business with Mother Miranda. Any other time the girls would stay home alone, but the last time it happened they "accidentally" murdered six maids.
Therefore, Donna trusted Angie to look over them while the dollmaker finished her latest project. It was all going well, her work would only take thirty minutes and there hasn't been any major crashing. However, once she was done and went upstairs, the sisters were looking over a box while Angie stood by the door seeming downcast.
When the Lady made herself known, excuses and attempts to hide the box filled the room, but one sigh made them settle down and wait for her to speak.
Donna took a deep breath and quietly sat beside the girls. "Where did you find this?"
They looked between each other with Bella coming forward to speak. "We were playing hide and seek, Dani found it."
The lady turned to Daniela, expecting an explanation.
"I was curious, I thought it would be fabric or something…sorry."
Donna took a deep breath before picking one of the photos inside. "I assume you have questions."
They all quickly nodded, making the dollmaker chuckle.
"It's a bit of a long story but I'll try to shorten it."
Summer 1943
Your family was friends with the Beneviento's long before you were born, so it only made sense for you to know the sisters Bernadette and Donna.
At the age of 7, you were best friends with Donna, doing constant sleepovers and having adventures around the woods. In one of said adventures, you tried climbing a tree to pick a flower for Donna, but as it happens with children, you fell.
The other girl rushed to your side, worried since you face palmed the ground. However, instead of crying, you just lifted your head and gave her a cheeky grin. "I think I broke a tooth." You said, opening your mouth to show her. Donna just laughed and hit your shoulder before pulling you up and going back home to fix your small wounds.
Summer was particularly hot during that year, therefore both of your parents would take you to the lake. It was a happy time, you and Donna would always play either pirates or explorers. Sometimes Bernadette would play along, but most of the time she was with her parents, Donna didn't truly mind, she had you.
Winter 1950
You were sitting in the closet with Donna laying on you. Her father was fighting with her mother, something that became quite usual ever since Bernadette passed away. Your parents didn't want you to visit anymore, but you came up with an urgent excuse to see your friend.
You were holding Donna and humming while waiting for the fight to end.
"Why are they still fighting?" Donna asked, holding your arms tighter.
"Well, I think your house is haunted. I mean, your dad is always mad so that must be why." You answered.
"Yeah, you're probably right." She said, sniffing a bit.
"You can come live with me. We can become pirates and travel all around the world, all the way to India. What do you think?"
"That would be nice…Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Would you sing for me?"
"Always. Any requests?"
"Something…dreamy."
"Okay."
"I want auroras and sad prose
I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet
'Cause I haven't moved in years
And I want you right here
A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground
With no one around to tweet it
While I bathe in cliffside pools
With my calamitous love and insurmountable grief
Take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die
I don't belong, and my beloved, neither do you
Those Windermere peaks look like a perfect place to cry
I'm setting off, but not without my muse
No, not without you"
Once the song ended, Donna turned around and hugged you. "Promise to never leave me."
You smiled and hugged her back just as tightly. "I promise, I'll never go anywhere without you."
You held her all night, you listened to her stories about the day, you sang for her when the fighting got too loud, you even made bad jokes.
You were Donna's sanity, you stood by her even when her parents died, never letting go of her hand.
But sadly, you were also the reason for to not initially accept Mother Miranda's gift.
Present time
Donna sighed as she finished the story the best she could."I can't exactly recall her face anymore, it has been twenty years, but at least now the story can pass on." Angie had already moved to her lap to offer comfort. The dollmaker pointed to the box's contents before speaking again. "These are gifts she gave me, everytime we explored she made sure to make me a flower crown or string rings. She was one of a kind."
Cassandra was fidgeting her fingers before asking. "What happened to her?"
Donna exhaled shallowly. "Her parents left the village. She didn't know they were leaving or she would've told me…at least I like to think so. I've never seen her again."
Dani gave her a sad look. "I'm sorry."
The lady nodded. "It's okay."
"We can find her…if you want to." Bella asked.
Donna slowly shook her head. "Some things are best to not know."
Cass tilted her head in confusion. "But…don't you want to know if she's alive, maybe Mother Miranda can make her like us."
The dollmaker sighed. "I'm sure, let's just leave this be."
The girls nodded and helped her place the box where it was. Soon enough it was time for them to leave.
Donna was okay, it wasn't rare the times she got caught in her memories, so the lady simply went to bed, hoping for the day to end.
The girls…well…they never promised anything. So the first thing they did once encountering their mother was to tell the whole story, after all, what harm could it do.

Walking through the picturesque streets of Cardinal Hill, you find ( story aitken ), the ( 28 ) year old ( yoga teacher/aerial artist ) originally from ( killin, scotland ). Living alongside them in such a small town, you know that they're ( confident ) and ( stubborn ), but what you might not know is that they are a ( human ), and that they’re hiding something…
quick facts
name: story aitken age: 28 gender: man sexuality: undefined (by story, but he's more or less pansexual) occupation: yoga instructor/aerial artist height: 5'8" weight: 157 pounds hair: brown, kind of wavy, usually kept shortish eyes: brown languages: english, russian, italian, some yiddish time in cardinal hill: 4 years
bio
triggers: injury, some brief pregnancy mention in the beginning
story's mother is scottish, and her home address has always been listed as her parents' home above their bakery in killin, scotland. thus, story's own home address was listed as the same up until four years ago when he settled down in cardinal hill.
he was actually born in the back of a caravan just outside of indore, madhya pradesh (india). his parents were both performers in the circus, acrobats and trapeze artists. though for the last few months of her pregnancy, his mother had merely been assisting with riggings and props for the other performers.
his parents had been with this particular circus for ten years by the time story came along. it wasn't the biggest circus, but it was one of the best-traveled, almost always on the move. a new city every few nights. the aitken's even had three children already by the time story came along. story was their last, though.
life on the road was normal for story. he didn't know anything else, and for most of his early life he didn't think to question it. it wasn't until one of his older siblings started dreaming of life in one place that story even realized that could be an option. his sibling eventually moved back to killin, working with their grandparents at the bakery, and the aitken parents offered this same placement to each of their children. but only one of the aitken children took the offer.
the other three continued to travel, learning everything it took to keep the circus running smoothly. the other circus workers were like other parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, etc. this was their family, always surrounding them. story knew he didn't want to leave that. he was happy.
the psychic taught them to read books as well as stars and tarot cards. the strongman taught them arithmetic, and also how to create illusions with items that were supposedly too heavy to lift. history was taught to them by the ringmaster, science by the animals' caretaker. story never stepped foot in a school, but he was always a good student.
his best "subject", so to speak, was the aerial arts. he definitely took after his parents in that way. by the time he was six years old, he was able to join in the beginning of the acrobats' performances. he didn't do any of the more challenging tricks and techniques in front of an audience, everyone in the circus going to great lengths to ensure the boy's safety, but he could do little things in the beginning. cute things, leaving the audience cheering and "awwing" and then gasping as he flew through the air.
he didn't care so much about the sounds the audience made. he was too focused on the feel of the air rushing past him, the lack of ground beneath his feet. when he let go of the bar or the ropes or whatever he was hanging from with one hand, and could feel nothing but air in his fingertips. he loved it. he lived for it.
by the time he was thirteen, he was performing with the circus regularly. his parents were on their way out of performing, happy to watch their children take their place. they became support for the circus, the way all older employees did, and they were content to do so. story became a headliner, photos of him in the air on several of the posters and flyers distributed when the circus would be arriving in a town or city.
unfortunately, while performing in ireland when story was 18, there was an incident. story fell at the worst possible moment, resulting in a pretty bad arm injury. he ended up needing surgery, and then traveled to scotland to recover in his grandparents' home for a couple of months. afterwards, he returned to the circus. it took a few more months before he was ready to perform again, but something had changed. the passion was still there, but there was something about the determination he had that scared his family. his need to perform even if it hurt him.
for years, story continued to bring crowds to their shows. but just before he turned 24, his father sat him down and had one of the only serious conversations story can ever remember having with his parents. story got angry when his father asked him to at least take more breaks between shows, if he wouldn't stop performing entirely. the two men didn't speak for several weeks, something none of their coworkers had ever seen occur in the aitken family before.
story never had a chance to reconcile with his father. it was such a silly argument, and he regrets not just apologizing and moving on. after his father passed, story decided it was time for him to leave the circus. he said good-bye to his family, and traveled around the united states.
he'd always liked when they had traveled to smaller towns, so when he found cardinal hill it seemed like a good fit for him. story got himself an apartment, and then found a studio he could rent a room in to start teaching yoga. it wasn't quite set up for aerial work, and besides that he was smart enough to know he needed a customer base for something like that before putting his savings into it.
for a few years, he cheerfully taught yoga and made himself at home in the small town. he got to know everyone that he could, established himself as part of the population. he rigged up in trees when the weather was good, performing aerial arts for tips and to garner interest in what he was doing. he made friends, and connections, and then finally bought a run-down old studio near the one he was renting in. it hadn't been used in many, many years, and he knew it would need fixing up. besides, he would need to construct all the things he knew it would need for rigging the hoops and ropes and silks necessary for aerial work.
currently, he still works as a yoga instructor. when he isn't working, he's usually doing something in the studio he's fixing up. and when he's not doing either of those things, he's out and about in town, always the social butterfly. it's rare to find him alone, or at home. he prefers to be out and doing things.
personality:
story was taught to always be kind and share whatever he has that others might not. he takes those lessons very seriously to this day, and will drop everything to help someone in need. he doesn't care too much about material possessions, so whatever is his also belongs to his loved ones (and oftentimes strangers that seem like they need a hand).
he can be a little aloof. he doesn't mean to be, he's just got dreams that he can't seem to pull himself away from all the time. it isn't abnormal for him to ask someone to repeat themselves because he zoned out for a moment or three.
when he is performing, he's hyperfocused on what he's doing. people used to think he was just a really good performer, but as you get to know him it becomes more obvious that he's truly just in love with what he does. it isn't about the performance, or the audience. it's about how he feels when he's in the air.
when story has his mind set on something, he won't stop until he achieves it. it doesn't matter what the cost may be physically or mentally, he doesn't give up. it can probably get pretty frustrating to the people who love him and don't want to see him stretched too thin or hurting himself.
this will be added to every so often!

India's T20 World Cup Triumph 2024
"Dhoni finishes off in style, It's India who win the World Cup." These lines said by Ravi Shastri had gone old with respect to India's World Cup Trophy drought. The most dominating team in bilateral series could not win an ICC Trophy and this was the biggest disappointment for ICT fans. After losing the 2023 world cup final, the first thought which came into my mind was that most probably 2024 t20 wc would be the last world cup Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play together. So, this was their only chance for a world cup glory and they did not gave us a feeling of dismay, sadness and disappointment but an year full of cherishing memories, joy and happiness
India won the T20 World Cup 2024 happening in the USA and West Indies. They became the only team to win a world cup staying unbeaten. Their journey to the final was a happening one from the high pressure game against or the game against Australia. Especially, the game against Pakistan was a sheer representation of the evolution of Indian team's pace battery in the last decade. From 98 percentage of winning the match with Pakistan our pace battery broke their dreams of winning a game against India as they took the game from them in the last 10 overs. From the first game to the last one, India never looked a under confident or worn out team as they dominated everybody they faced badly. One such win was against Australia in the Super Eight which was personal for every Indian citizen ( If you know what I am talking about). Rohit's knock in that game was the indication of the frustration he had in himself after every knockout loss in every world cup in the last 5-6 years with more respect to 19th November. Then comes the Semifinal against England and that transition from 10 wicket win to 10 wickets out was outstanding. The game was one sided as soon as England completed their powerplay during the batting stint. Every cricket in the team was hungry of that silverware. So, they never looked back to the losses they had been facing but focused on their race to the unmatched legacy of winning a World Cup Trophy. The final was the best which could happen in an ICC tournament. It was not a cricket match a display of every emotion one can imagine in a game of cricket. India set a target of 177 and defend for India seemed easy until Klaseen smashed 24 runs in the 15th over and his team needed just 30 of 30 balls. India's pace attack pulled off a blinder from that stage by first Bumrah giving an economical over and then Hardik took the wicket of Klaseen to shift the momentum of the game on his side. The hidden hero was Arshdeep Singh who also pulled of two brilliant overs at the right - one in the middle and the other in the death. Last over consisted of South Africa requiring 16 runs and Hardik had to defend them. The first ball was a full toss indicating the pressure Hardik had with respect to his last 6 months. Miller swung his bat so hard but could not get the middle and it was the sticker that touched his bat but it was enough to go to the boundary but not above it as Suryakumar Yadav caught the ball and fancied India's chances to get the silverware.
Virat Kohli was in tears and Rohit Sharma lied down to celebrate their undermining hard work in the last decade and the last time in this format. The pair decided to announce their retirement from T20I's together after getting their hands on the silverware. Looking back to their world cup triumph I see a roller coaster ride filled with emotions of joy, happiness and satisfaction. The trophy weighing 12kg which they lifted had made 1.3 billion people happy back home which they expressed through lighting firecrackers and doing individual parades. India became the first cricket team to win a T20I world cup unbeaten displaying their want to get hands on the trophy badly and they gave everything for it. We also gave everything for it and got the result back paying the debt of our worshipping to the team from the last 17 freaking years.
Ravi Shastri's lines were replaced by the ones - Long on, Long On and what a catch, Suryakumar takes it and Miller's gone !!!!!!!!

Tiger Man
Tumblr media
Summary: The year was 1941, bandmates and secret lovers Scotty Moore and Elvis Presley got caught red handed by Scotty’s fiancée, and this led to the young men being thrusted headlong into the China-Burma-India theater of World War II as members of the first American Volunteer Group (The Flying Tigers).
Chapter 3. Lost and Found
Pairing: Scotty Moore x Elvis Presley (m/m)
Word count: 2.4k
Warning: grieving, comfort sex, bombing of civilians
New Year 1942 brought with it new rounds of air combat for Elvis, Scotty and their squadron. They were sent back to southern Burma to reinforce the 3rd squadron there in the Battle of Rangoon. By then the Japanese had launched a full-scale campaign to take over the capital city of the British colony. To provide air coverage for the British and allied troops and to deliver ground attacks on the enemy, the Tigers had many encounters with groups of Japanese fighter planes known as “Oscars” and “Nates” and managed to come out victorious despite being outnumbered and outgunned repeatedly. In the process, the dynamic duo from Memphis was able to destroy another three enemy aircrafts with their seamless collaboration by the time spring turned around. From cousin Gene’s communication, it appeared the achievements of Flying Tigers even received a wave of publicity as part of wartime propaganda stateside, being among the few bright spots that could be gleaned from early part of the American involvement.
The overall direction of the war was not in their favor, however. The British was losing their footing in Burma to Japanese army’s advances, despite some reinforcement from the Chinese Expeditionary Force sent by the Chinese Nationalist government. After the fall of Rangoon, the Japanese ground forces began their relentless sweep northward through Burma. To aid the allies and distract the invaders, the Tigers started to take on risky missions such as carrying out air raids on Japanese bases in Thailand. Bomb racks were added to their p-40s for this purpose. In retaliation, large groups of Japanese fighter-bombers plagued the British airbases in Burma. Unsurprisingly, the Tigers began to suffer more casualties as the Burma Campaign wore on. A few good men had been lost in intense air battles or fell victim to powerful anti-aircraft artillery. Moreover, some p-40s were destroyed on the ground during enemy air raids. When their planes were damaged during battle, the parts for repair were very hard to come by. All of these factors caused the size of each squadron to dwindle and overall morale to slip. As the Imperial Army overwhelmed its ill-prepared and poorly equipped opponents during the spring months, it became more and more apparent that Japanese occupation of the entirety of Burma would be inevitable.
Despite all the setbacks in Burma and eventual retreat of his Squadron back to the southwest Chinese province of Yunnan, Elvis continued to perform well on all his missions, even managed to expand his air-to-air victory scores to five. Thus, along with Scotty who had six under his name, the former graduates from Humes High had officially become a pair of flying aces. Elvis wrote about this achievement with pride in his letters back home, jubilant over the bounty money he had earned for each kill which he would be sending to the family. Naturally he neglected to mention the precarious position the squadron was facing as the allied forces were being pummeled in this part of the world, the hardship they had to endure due to lack of supplies, or the close calls he had encountered numerous times during his air combats. He figured that Daddy and especially Mama did not need to know about these unsettling details. International mail service during wartime was shoddy at best, there was no telling if and when his folks would receive this communication. But Elvis kept writing regularly, the thought of family receiving good news like these was comforting and always served to lift his spirits.
Scotty sat on the wing of his fighter plane one day in April, inspecting the repairs the ground crew had just made to the wing guns. The Tigers were now based near the Chinese city of Baoshan, which was one of the locations near Burmese border under frequent aerial harassment by Japanese bombers and fighters. Another pilot, Joey Cooper, walked over from the direction of the barracks and stopped next to the plane, a look of concern on his face: “Hey Scotty, will ya take a look at Elvis? He got a telegram from home today, probably bad news. He was crushed and hadn’t spoken to anyone since!”
Scotty’s heart skipped a beat: “Oh no! I hope it had nothin’ to do with his Mama!!”. He jumped down from the plane instantly and ran towards the barracks. Scotty ran into two other pilots on his way there and they seemed to know automatically who he was looking for. “We tried…” One of them uttered apologetically and pointed at the entrance of the flat brick structure behind him. Scotty rushed in the door but then slowed down when he came upon the sad and lonely figure at the far end, lying in prone position with his face buried in the familiar single wire bed. His heart throbbed painfully as he started to make out the muffled sobs emanating from the young man. “Elvis, baby. What happened?” Scotty asked as he sat down at the edge of the bed.
Elvis’ shoulders shuddered for a second, then slowly he lifted his head. Tears streaming, nose running, face flushed, Elvis looked so pitiful it evoked an overwhelming sense of tender protectiveness within Scotty. He pulled his beloved over and held him tight, that was when Elvis finally made out something coherent: “Scotty, Mama is gone… I-I-I got nothin’ left no more!” He sounded so nasally it was almost like coming from another person. Scotty’s heart plunged into sorrow as the dreaded news was confirmed, he knew just how much Gladys meant to her son. He squeezed Elvis a little tighter, lightly patted his back in a soothing gesture, “I’m so sorry, baby. Life throws curveballs at us sometimes. I know it’s real rough.”
“Everyone at home were trying to keep it from me about how sick she had been. Last I heard she was amazed to hear about the Tigers in the news!” Elvis finally responded amidst a string of sniffles. He pulled back a little and that pair of large teary sapphire eyes locked up with Scotty's steely blue: “I should have seen it coming. I worried about her health but never, never thought she would leave this world so young. It’s just not her time to go.” He wiped his face messily with the back of a hand: “They said her liver and heart gave out. I know it, I worried her into an early grave!”
It pained Scotty to see his baby so lost and despondent, he had to will himself not to lean in and kiss away all his tears. He reminded himself they were in public, and anyone could walk into the barrack any time. So instead, he gently caressed the sobbing young man at the back of his neck: “Don’t think that way, honey. She was called on by God ’cause her earthly trials were done. She had been proud of you before she passed. Believe me, your Mama would want you to be strong like how she had raised you.”
With this gentle consolation Scotty stood up and walked over to the sink with a washcloth. He turned on the tap until warmth was slowly felt in his fingertips. He soaked the washcloth in water and then wrung it out before turning off the faucet. He then returned to the grieving young man who was sobbing and rambling, clasping a small, faded family picture in his hands. “Come on baby, let’s clean up your face.” Scotty sat down on the bed, nudged Elvis’ back a little and suggested. It almost felt like taking care of a small child as Scotty supported the back of Elvis’ head with one hand while using the other hand to pat his face with the slightly damp cloth. “Now there’s the flying ace Elvis Presley that I know.” Scotty joked as he tidied up the face of his flying partner and smooth out the wrinkles on his uniform.
Still looking numb and stiff from the tragic news, Elvis murmured: “I never got to see her one last time. It was all my fault, I left Satinin on her own. All those long nights she must’ve stayed up fretting for me… This is how God punishes me, he takes her away and, and I’ll never get to see her sweet face again!” His voice started to break down again while fresh tears circled in his mournful eyes.
“Listen to me, baby!” Scotty grabbed Elvis by the shoulders and shook him: “I know losing your Mama is a lot to handle, she meant the world to you. But you’ve got to toughen up for yourself and the rest of the family. You still have a lot to live for!” Staring Elvis straight in the eyes, Scotty’s tone turned from firm to tender: “I need you to be strong and brave for me, Elvis. Life is fragile, especially during wartime. Hundreds and thousands are suffering and dying all around us, but we still got each other. You are my true love; it breaks my heart to see you so heartbroken. In a few months our contract would be up with the Tigers, and we’ll get to go home then. We can go visit your Mama’s grave together and bring her flowers.”
“D-did you just call me your true love?” Elvis stammered with a stunned expression on his face. He looked so cute Scotty wished he could take him right then and there. Instead, he played it down: “You know what you heard.” “Scotty, you’ve always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Without Mama I’m lost, but you’re such a blessing.” Elvis straightened up, took in a breath before speaking resolutely: “I promise from now on I’ll be strong for you and be worthy of your love.” His sincerity was promptly rewarded by a warm hug from Scotty, who managed to sneak in a kiss on the forehead too.
Elvis was given the next two days off for bereavement. Scotty was excused from regular duty as well, specifically tasked to cheer him up since it was obvious that only Scotty could prevent Elvis from crumbling psychologically. Both were now suffering from lack of sleep because it took most of the night for Scotty to calm Elvis’ sobbing and coax him to sleep. Elvis also lost all appetite ever since the terrible news. Far too quiet to be normal, he was noted by others to be often lost in thoughts. Taking account of all this, Squadron leader Tex encouraged Scotty to find Elvis some “distractions”. The implication was for the older pilot to take his grief-stricken partner to Baoshan city to seek some pleasure in brothels. Naturally the two lovers spent the precious time off with each other instead.
The owner of Changrong Inn smiled knowingly at the two tall American soldiers who checked into his modest hotel. Mr. Sun was fond of the foreign couple who had stayed a night here occasionally over the last month or two. They were polite and discrete, never got drunk or caused a fight, and most importantly, tipped well. He had even suggested some choice local eateries and nearby sightseeing locations to the nice young men. Business was slow over the last few years in this Chinese city under constant threat of Japanese invasion. Mr. Sun wished he had more wealthy and trouble-free tourists like these for customers, what they did behind closed doors was no concern of his. The thought was pushed aside as he handed the keys of one of his nicest rooms to the Americans.
Once inside the room and isolating themselves from the rest of the world, Scotty and Elvis were immediately locked in passionate kisses, hands going under shirts and fondling up and down bare shoulders and backs. They pressed their bodies against each other so tightly it felt like they almost melted into one. It took considerable patience and willpower for Scotty to unbutton and undress his lover properly. Elvis on the other hand was not so patient. He only managed to take off Scotty’s jacket and unzip his trousers. When guitar slinger’s already excited member popped out of his clothes, Elvis’ knees became weak and wobbly. He could feel the radiating heat and pulsing veins as he took the growing organ into his hands. With barely a push down on his shoulders, Elvis kneeled down at Scotty’s feet and kissed him on the tip. Licking along his length and lapping up his precum, there was a streak of desperation in those beautiful eyes as Elvis eagerly wrapped his mouth around Scotty and took him down as deep as he could. Scotty knew at that moment that Elvis needed him just like roses needed rain. He was the only one who could fill up the gaping hole which was in the young man’s heart, and make Elvis feel alive again.
Tears of contentment and gratification streamed down Elvis’ face as he let his lover use him any way he pleased. The more seasoned pilot kept his hands buried in those soft locks of light chestnut hair and held that pretty head still. He pushed against the back of Elvis’ throat repeatedly until a mind-numbingly satisfying release inside of his younger partner.
Twice more Scotty would spill his seeds within his gorgeous lead singer that night by the time their romp in bed was over. Elvis reached his own climax while being slammed from behind as he laid beneath Scotty. While he slipped into restful sleep for the first time since three days ago, he vaguely remembered being sponged clean caringly by his guardian angel, and the overwhelming sense that Scotty was what makes his life worth living in this lonely and perilous world.
The couple’s peaceful slumber was shattered by loud sirens as morning came around. This was soon replaced by sounds of explosion, low-flying bombers and screaming civilians as they were cut down by strafing machine guns. Scotty shouted: “Air raid!” In the blink of an eye, he pushed Elvis down one side of the bed and then rolled down himself only seconds later. As the pair huddled under the bed, their room shook for a few moments due to a stray bomb which landed within the confines of the Changrong Inn itself. A cloud of smoke and panicked cries could be heard rising out of the east wing of the little hotel. The rumbling of distant artillery suggested ground troops were not far from the city. The lovers embraced each other without words, both knowing in their hearts that Japanese army was moving closer, a full-scale confrontation was soon to come.

Worth It Guide: There's Something About Mary | Series Masterlist
(Related excerpts from Worth It under the cut, in case anyone needs a refresher on The Mary Lore.)
Tumblr media
You returned to the park every day.
You'd told your mother you were meeting your new friend Mary Lennox, who had just left her palace in India behind for a mansion in London. She was a strange and lonely girl, who knew nothing of city life, so you'd volunteered to be her guide. Mary was very shy, and only comfortable with you for now, but you promised you would bring her home with you eventually. And perhaps your mother would receive an invitation to tea with Mary's exceedingly rich parents one day.
Except there was no Mary Lennox. There was only Ralph Penbury. Mary was the protagonist in The Secret Garden. You had once asked your mother to read it with you, back when you wanted to be close to her, but she never did. The only things your mother ever read were newsletters from her ladies' groups. How boring that must be.
You dared only spend a few hours with him a day, but you treasured every second of your visits. You'd meet at your secret bench at noon, share a picnic lunch packed by his kitchen staff, and discuss everything from books, to philosophy, to what the world might look like in a hundred years.
Your parents had noticed an improvement in your general demeanor since the Valentine's Day dance, but attributed it to your new friend Mary. You'd never had a friend that close before, always holding everyone at an arm's length. They need not know that your arms were actually wrapped tightly around Ralph Penbury.
-My Good Friend Mary (Chapter 3)
Tumblr media
You crumple the paper and lift the lid off your box. Inside is a large book about India.
You look at Ralph in confusion. "Open it!" he says eagerly.
You crack open the front cover. Inside is a message, in a woman's handwriting. Leaning closer, you read:
To My Newest and Dearest Friend,
Now you can see the places I tell you about in all my stories!
Thank you for being so kind and welcoming to me as I adjust to my new home. I could not do it without you.
Love, Your Good Friend Mary
"I thought it would help sell the story of Mary Lennox to your mother," he explains.
"Indeed it will," you laugh.
-My Good Friend Mary (Chapter 3
Tumblr media
"Your mother seems to think you've been sneaking around with the Penbury boy."
You can neither confirm nor deny, so you stare at the floor.
"Is that the one you kissed at the dance?"
"Yes."
"Is he also a friend of Mary Lennox?"
You stiffen, and your father... laughs at you?
"You were obsessed with that book for a year. Did you forget that summer I helped you plant your own little garden out back?"
You're such an idiot. The other side of your face turns a shade of crimson to rival the slapped side.
"You didn't say anything."
"You were leaving the house willingly and coming home happy. I thought it best not to question miracles." You lean forward and bury your burning face in your hands.
He chuckles at your shame. "Tell me about the boy."
-Questioning Miracles (Chapter 11)
Tumblr media
"Why are you suddenly interested in attending a pajama party?"
"Because Victoria is going to be my sister-in-law, and I barely know her or her friends."
Your mother takes a bite and chews thoughtfully for a moment.
"Is Mary going?"
You nearly choke. How long had it been since anyone mentioned Mary? You assumed she'd figured it out ages ago. Your father lowers his newspaper just enough to show you that he's watching you with amusement, and will be saying nothing to help you. You stall with a sip of juice and concoct a quick story.
"Mary has returned to India."
"Oh? When did this happen?"
"Not very long ago. She was lured back for a friend's wedding, and decided that she couldn't bear to return to dreary old England."
"And what do her parents have to say about this?"
"They understand. She's much happier there."
"Well, I'm sorry to hear it. It took you ages to finally find a suitable friend, and now she's abandoned you."
"Will Ralph be at this party you're going to?" your father graciously cuts in before you're forced to continue making up stories about your fake friend Mary.
"Probably. But I was told that Victoria's party is just for her girlfriends. I wouldn't put it past her to lock him in the attic for the night."
This was not a lie. Lying to your mother was no problem. But your father, with his eyes narrowed over the top of his newspaper, had you on the verge of breaking a sweat.
-Victoria and I Are Having a Party (Chapter 16)
