Ranthambore Tiger Safari - Is it worth it?

Are you unsure if you should book a Ranthambore safari with tigers? This is how it works and what you should do.

Ranthambore Tiger Safari in Sawai Madhopur has been voted one of the top places in India to spot tigers. Ranthambore was close to our Golden Triangle visit, so we went there in hopes of seeing India's national animal, the Bengal Tiger.

Logically speaking, the odds of us being successful were not in our favor with only 50 tigers covering nearly 400 km. However, I chose to believe that we would be fortunate.

Ranthambore Safari: Best Time to Visit

Ranthambore Tiger Reserve is open from October through the end of June. The monsoon keeps it closed to visitors for the remainder of the year.

Ranthambore Tiger Safari and seeing tigers is best when it rains. This is from April through June. It can heat up to 40 degrees Celsius, but animals are encouraged to venture out of the enclosure by the lack of water.

Avoid October if you can.

Ranthambore winter

Ranthambore was cold in February when we visited it. It is cold in the mornings, so bring warm clothes and a scarf if you plan to sit in an open jeep.

Ranthambore Tiger Safari

Ranthambore Tiger Safari is located in Sawai Madhopur (Rajasthan). It is located approximately 400km from Delhi, and 180km from Jaipur (the capital of Rajasthan).

Delhi

I recommend the train. It is faster and cheaper, and it takes only 5 hours if you book in advance. It takes 7 to 8 hours by car.

From Jaipur

It takes about 3,5 hours by train or car to get from Jaipur, India, to Ranthambore Tiger Reserve. However, the road isn’t very good. Again, I recommend the train.

It was a bumpy ride from Pushkar to Sawai Madhopur. Pre-booking a taxi was a better option as it would be quicker. However, the driver lost his way in the fog and ended up driving for 11 hours. The driver pulled up in front of some local men as we passed through a small village at night. He suggested that we stay there until the fog lifts.

This was just one month after the horrible gang rape, murder, and kidnapping of a Delhi girl. We were not going to stop! I wasn't going to be afraid of being attacked and he didn't seem to care if I did. So I told him to KEEP MOVING. I didn't sleep well that night because I was trying to make sure he didn’t stop at any place he wasn’t supposed.

We arrived at our hotel at 6.30 am, ready to go on the Ranthambore Tiger Safari at 7 AM. I was exhausted and could not go to sleep. I was able to sleep for a few minutes, but the tour guide arrived at our room and said, "Let's go find some tigers!"

Ranthambore National Park animals

Ranthambore National Park is home to many wonderful bird species. This park is home to many birds, including flycatchers, flamingos, and sarus cranes.

We had to sign a declaration before we entered the park. It basically stated that we would not sue Ranthambore Tiger Safari if a tiger attacked us and that we would not sue them if a tiger ate us.

Ranthambore is the best place to see tigers

The park is divided into 10 areas. Zones 1-5 is the core zones. zones 2 and 3 are the best places to spot tigers. Because there are three lakes in Zone 3, it is the most popular. This area is thought to be Ranthambore's best habitat as they will come here for water.

Although we didn't know it at the time, it would not have been a problem as you have no control over which zone you go to. The Ranthambore Tiger Reserve management decides this.

Ranthambore Tiger Safari: Should you go?

It is a difficult question.

We didn't see any tigers, and I haven’t met anyone who has. I tend to say no. Many stories from the Internet will prove otherwise.

You will have a better chance of seeing a Tiger if you go on more safaris. If you are lucky enough to be able to see the best areas, your odds are in your favor.

Just like with everything else, you need to be realistic about your expectations. You won't see tigers on the Ranthambore safari if you don't expect them to. It's possible to be lucky, but it's still a chance you should take. Accept those odds if you are willing to take them on!

Stay at Ranthambore Tiger Resort

We were not able to see any tigers but we were very happy with the Ranthambore Tiger Resort.

Ranthambore's Tiger safari resort had a great pool, wonderful rooms, and extremely helpful staff. We had previously ordered a taxi from Agra for the evening, but the driver did not show up.

Sawai Madhopur, which is in the middle of nowhere, makes it difficult to get to Agra. We didn't have enough time. The hotel manager was extremely understanding. He called me and told me that his nephew could drive me. It would cost us less than the other company (which was pretty cheap).

The manager was great, and we had a wonderful trip to Agra. As you can see, I have nothing but praise for this hotel.

Ranthambore, one of the most popular wildlife destinations in India, is located in the Sawai Madhopur District of Rajasthan. COVID-19 fuels the threat of global famine

The pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity around the world. The World Food Program is short of resources to alleviate hunger.

Conflicts, climate change and now COVID-19 are the three C’s driving 270 million people to famine in the most impoverished countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central and Latin America. Officials at the World Food Program (WFP), the hunger relief arm of the United Nations that feeds about a hundred million people each year in some 88 countries, warned that they are running out of resources to meet the demand for staple foods and thus prevent people dying from starvation.

“We are asking globally $13.5 billion for our budget this year, but we forecast being able to raise only about $7.8 billion,” said Steve Taravella, WFP’s senior spokesperson at a briefing organized by Ethnic Media Services on Feb. 26.

Before the pandemic, there were about 135 million people acutely hungry in the world, but the collateral economic impacts of the virus have doubled that number. WFP estimates that in 2021, about 19,000 officials working in developing countries will have to duplicate efforts to serve at least 120 million people, in hardest-hit places like Yemen, South Sudan, Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

“For some years WFP and others working on global hunger were really effective in bringing hunger down to what we hoped would be the zero hunger goal of the UN by 2030. It’s pretty clear now, that’s not going to happen,” Taravella said. “COVID is making the poorest of the world poorer and the hungriest of the world hungrier.”

WFP won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for its efforts to eradicate hunger in areas where natural disasters and conflict have disrupted normal food distribution channels. Areas where bombed roads prevent trucks carrying flour, rice, lentils, peas, cooking oil and salt from getting through. Areas where airstrikes destroy planes carrying dietary supplies. Areas where incessant fighting prevents hungry people from venturing out for food or aid workers from moving safely to provide it, at a time when crops cannot be harvested.

“There have been terrorist acts against villagers and aid workers by Al-Qaeda Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram and ISIS,” Taravella said. Recently, a WFP staff member was killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo while accompanying the Italian ambassador on a visit to a school feeding site.

WFP provides school meals in the classrooms, helps pregnant women and new mothers to understand nutrition, and supports small farmers to find markets for their produce.

“We work very closely with governments but we see ourselves there only as a temporary band-aid. Our goal is to help build the country’s capacity to manage the programs,” said Taravella.

Although the WFP does not operate food banks in the United States, immigrants in the country have contributed greatly to alleviating hunger in their homelands after natural disasters such as the typhoon that devastated the Philippines or the hurricanes in Central America. But COVID has also impacted remittances.

Devastating hurricanes

“When COVID hit, we were really hoping that the hurricane season will be a quiet one as we had a few years ago, but that was not the case,” said Elio Rujano, communications officer for the WFP’’s regional bureau for Central America and the Caribbean.

The 2020 season produced 30 named storms, of which 13 became hurricanes, six of them devastating in scope. Eta and Iota ravaged areas in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua while tropical storm Amanda hit El Salvador. Since 2014, these countries have already been experiencing prolonged periods of droughts or excessive rains caused by the El Niño phenomenon, both causing the destruction of crops and the livelihood of farmer families.

“In the past we were only focusing on the dry corridor where rural farmers live, but now, because of the pandemic, hunger has expanded to urban areas,” Rujano said from his Panama City office. “50% of the labor in Latin America and Central America is informal labor. People work on the streets, and since they could no longer go out, they couldn’t meet their basic needs.”

Back in 2018, hunger in the region was affecting 2.2 million people and that number is approaching nearly 8 million in 2021.

Here WFP works to support communities to become more resilient to climate change. They teach them to replace the plantation of fragile products such as beans and maize with beekeeping, since honey can be stored for longer periods. They also provide people with cash transfers to buy food at local shops and teach them about nutrition.

Rujano estimates that they could serve up to 2.6 million people this year if they reach $47 millions in donations to reach that population.

Malnourished children in Yemen

Although the situation in Central America is worrying, in places like Yemen where conflict is the main driver of the hunger crisis, the figures are even more chilling. Since the end of 2018, this country has been described as the home of the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Six years of war between the Houthi rebels who control the north of the country and the nationally recognized government dominating the south, have devastated infrastructure, destroyed agricultural land, eroded government services and left the healthcare system on its knees.

About 4 million people out of a population of 30 have become internal refugees while food prices are on average 140 times higher than before the war.

“The hunger situation right now in Yemen has hit a new peak,” said Annabel Symington, head of communications for the WFP in Yemen. “The forecast for 2021 is that 50,000 people are already living in famine like conditions, another 5 million are at severe risk of falling into famine and about 11 million people are facing crisis levels of food insecurity,” she added.

Famine occurs when malnutrition is so widespread that people are literally starving from lack of access to nutritious regular food.

WFP assists more than 12 million people in Yemen – its world’s largest operation – delivering flour, pulses, oil, sugar and salt, as well as canned goods for those who do not have immediate access to kitchen equipment such as the case of the internal displaced people.

The conflict has contributed to nearly half of all children under the age of 5 in Yemen facing acute malnutrition, which not only affects their physical and cognitive development, but puts them at risk of death. 11.2 million pregnant or breastfeeding mothers are also malnourished and according to Symington these numbers can be an underestimate.

Mothers are resorting to desperate measures to survive: either they eat less to feed their children or they must choose which of their kids eat.

After COVID, death rates skyrocketed, but as the testing capacity is limited, it is unknown for sure how many people contracted the virus. “The lockdown was lifted quite early because people will starve if they stay at home,” Symington said.

“It is clear that peace is what Yemen needs so we can address the food crisis,” she added.

Migrants in India

In India, the country with the highest number of food insecure people due to its large population (1.3 billion inhabitants), the pandemic worsened the living conditions for domestic migrants.

Almost 139 million people move from rural areas to large cities to work in informal jobs in factories or as street vendors. The coronavirus forced them to go back to their villages, and since transportation was not working, they had to move by foot, facing not only long hours of walking but hunger. The pandemic also disrupted the harvesting season in March and April affecting food supply chains.

“Although the restrictions (due to the pandemic) have been eased out and these people came back to the cities, there are very few jobs due to the economic slowdown,” said from New Delhi Parul Sachdeva, country advisor in India for Give2Asia, an NGO that supports grassroots organizations in 23 countries in Asia Pacific.

“Today 8 in 10 people are eating less food than before the pandemic and nearly 1 in 3 people face moderate or severe food insecurity.”

The government approved a package of US $22.6 billion for the distribution of staple foods during four months and cash transfers of $ 500 rupees (US $ 7) for up to three months. But informal workers were left out of the package, forcing civil society organizations to support those returning to their villages with meals, health supplies and shelter.

Organizations like Akshaya Patra distributed 1.8 million meals a day to children across India. GIve2Asia is now working on economic rehabilitation through training and input costs for agriculture.

“These are the kind of activities we wish to promote,” Sachdeva added. “I think they provide some kind of solution for livelihood regeneration in a country like ours,” she concluded.

Experience of living in different cities

In my life of more than 7 decades, I have lived in some 8 cities starting from Ahmedabad, Pilani, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Yokohama( Japan), Muscat (Oman) and Bangalore, in that order. I will make an attempt to pen down the “trivial”, but not so common, features of my experience.

I was brought up in Ahmedabad from 1954 to 1967, which were mostly my student days. We lived on the outskirt of the city and our society of bungalows was surrounded by open fields where still farming was going on. Other than school and college, I was busy playing different games with my neighbors. I enjoyed Gujarati snacks and would take extra efforts to get them. Our neighbors were very kind and did not complain of our cricket or other games played anytime of the day. City had a very good bus service and it was our main transport. Our bungalow had a few tenants like us but it did have a problem of water and sewage. Water supply was short and erratic, and septic tank sometime spilt over. We loved the festival of Navratri ( Garba/Dandia) and kite flying on Makarsankrant.

I shifted to BITS, Pilani hostel for five years from 1967. The change from day scholar to hostel life was huge. I could do what I wanted and when I wanted (freedom) except class attendance. Other than academic pursuit, I was able to indulge in sports/games. I learnt how to play basket ball, table tennis and contract bridge. I improved my ability to play carom, cricket and hockey. Being confined to the campus for a couple of months at a stretch, I enjoyed food in the mess and also outside at Nutan market/dhabas. I was introduced to black (udad) dal, lemon rice, mawa mutter, stuffed parathas and stuffed capsicum/tomato in the mess. Outside the campus got to taste Titar (partridge), reportedly a banned bird. I was bombarded by Hindi movies as every Saturday a movie was screened for students. I probably saw more than 125 movies in BITS in five years, compared to less than 20 movies seen earlier. Initially the old movies were screened in 16 mm in a quadrangle of the main building but later new movies in 35 mm in a huge auditorium. Once in a while, we escaped the campus life to see late night movie in a makeshift shed called Jayashree talkies.

After graduation in 1972, I lived in South Delhi till the late 70’s, initially as a bachelor and then a family man. Major problem of Delhi was public transport as I did not own a vehicle then. City bus (DTC), autorikshaw or yellow taxi were most unreliable and the operators ( drivers and conductors) most non-cooperative and rude. My wife, who joined me from Bombay, was most shocked as she compared this scene with BEST of Bombay. I did not face much problem as I used a contract bus to go to office. As a bachelor, I used to join others on most Saturday night’s for a party. The liquor law did not permit drinking in public so we sometime managed to cross into Haryana (Faridabad) and consumed beers and chicken. Returning after the fling was not a problem as “drive after drinks “was not an offence. In Delhi, we enjoyed different types of food –Punjabi and Chinese. Our favorite places were Lajpatnagar market, M block market in GKI, Narulas and Hongkong in GKI. Most tasty samosa was made by a small vendor in East of Kailash A block market. At residence, we faced water shortage and had to cook on kerosene stove.

We shifted to Bombay in early 80’s and lived there for 8 years. Biggest difference was a moderate summer compared to Delhi and very efficient city transport whether bus, taxi or autorikshaw. We also enjoyed the sea and its beeches- Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu and Malad. We, however, had to face some water shortage. We once again were able to enjoy street food like batata vada, Frankie, bhel etc. We also loved Irani café menu of maska pav, kheema pav, baida( egg) roti etc. We started going to Marathi plays often and enjoyed the change from Hindi movies. I got to own a flat in 1982 and a Bajaj scooter in 1984. That made life easy.

We moved to Pune in the mid 80’s for a brief period and are staying there till date (more than 20 years) except our breaks to go to Japan, Oman and Bangalore. In first phase, we got to live in a bigger place, owned our own Premier Padmini car and telephone line at residence, all thanks to Thermax, my employer. The major sigh of relief was water availability and good round the year weather-moderate summer, monsoon and winter. These advantages remain even today. Pune offered the advantages of a village and city. Distances were short and day out picnic spots in the surrounding hills were approachable and affordable. I got introduced to music (performing arts) of all kinds –classical, light, gazal, filmy and non filmy. I was able to attend live performances of stars like Pt. Jasraj, Kaushiki Chakravarty, Shaunak Abhisheki, Hariharan, Raghunandan Panashikar, Jagjiy Singh, Alka Yagnik, Shankar Madhavan,Shaan, Sarod by Amjad Ali, dances by Hema Malini, Minakshi Sheshadri. Also new upcoming stars like Vibhavari Joshi Apte, Hrishikesh Ranade.Pune reintroduced us to Lord Ganesh and we love the ten day special festival of Ganpati. I was and am able to indulge in outdoor activities like walking, swimming and going to hills. We got introduced to YOGA-pranayam, Omkar, suryanamskar etc. We do it regularly even today. Our health received a boost as we got to know more about homeopathy medicines as my wife has seen lot of benefits to this alternative therapy. I was able to afford and enjoy different cuisines. My membership of a club once again enabled me to see a Hindi movie every week. Since it was free, one had the luxury to walk out of un-interesting movie without feeling guilty.

We moved to Yokohama, Japan during the 90’s. The change was huge-from “stone” age of Pune, India to space tech level in Yokohama,Japan. The weather was excellent and all the utilities-water, piped gas, electricity and land line were reliable and affordable. First time we used a Microwave oven and rice cooker with a timer. Only my daughter’s international school fee was a huge dent on my pocket but she had the best quality of education. We got initiated into Japanese food and loved visiting China Town for authentic Chinese cuisine. My daughter enjoyed the American fast food at McDonald’s and Pizzas at Shakey’s. Surprisingly there were more than fifty Indian restaurants in Tokyo area and we loved the Naan served there. The public transport (bus, train, taxi) was reliable, clean and convenient even for foreigners like us despite the language hurdle. We also enjoyed a ride on the famous bullet train (called Shinkansen) from Yokohama to Kyoto (400 kms). Like Japanese people, we also started visiting and appreciating the nature in the hills near Yokohama including hot springs and Mt. Fuji. We were surprised and shocked to find all public places-footpath, roads, stations, bus stops and toilets were spotlessly clean (clean like home). Another surprise was that weather forecast was very reliable and available in the lift lobby of the buildings. Being an island country, it would rain any time and this forecast helped. We also got introduced to huge superstores and malls. Some malls were part of railway stations e.g. Yokohama. We also got to know the vending machine culture of Japan. Many daily required items (soft drinks, coffee, tea, snacks, milk, beer, cigarette etc) could be purchased from vending machines which were all over- on footpath, near stations, lift lobbies, parks etc.Even train tickets were on a vending machine. We also made our first visit to entertainment parks like Disneyland. We also got used to the deep tub (OFURO) bath that Japanese used to keep warm during winter. I got introduced to Sumo, the Japanese wrestling and professional baseball.

We moved to Muscat, Oman for two and a half years in the late 90’s. Other than the high temperatures (summer could be + 50 Deg C), the life was very enjoyable. Oman was an exception in the Middle East and it honored Indians and Hindus. The biggest hurdle to mobility was a driving license and I got it fast luckily. I was glad to drive around in a Camry, poor person’s Mercedes. We were regular visitors to 200 year old Shiva temple and newly built Krishna temple, both built and managed by kutchi community. We were able to buy Indian vegetables and fruits easily and reasonably priced. There was easy access to Indian restaurants and street food. We got introduced to Kerala paratha (laccha paratha) and some tandoori roti from Pakistani outlets. We got introduced to Lebanese cuisine and we loved it. We could go out for dinner, which also offered Indian music or Egyptian belly dance. We were privileged to see Hindi movies on Thursday night, a day before they were released in Mumbai. We were able to drive down to Dubai in 4 hours (400 Kms) and enjoy the shopping. Driving was a pleasure as all had to follow the traffic rules and they were followed. Muscat had lovely road side greenery and flowers, and they were maintained with great efforts. Muscat airport restaurant was open for non-muslims during Ramadan and that was a big relief.

After retiring from a Pune company in 2012, I took a short assignment in Bangalore. We were lucky to stay in huge residential complex in Whitefield. First time in our life, we stayed in high rise building on the 11th floor. We enjoyed the famous Bangalore weather but had to face mosquito menace. The complex had a zero water requirement as it treated and re-circulated most of the sewage. It, however, gave a bad smell in parking area (basement). We had to bear bad water quality. We used aqua guard treated water for cooking and bought Bisleri for drinking. The water quality also reflected in poor quality of green vegetables. Another problem we faced was traffic jams- it took almost 90 minutes from our residence to reach the airport. Most facilities in our area were catering to IT crowd and hence it was re-adjustment for us.

In conclusion, I can say that present day life style is a mixture of what we picked up from different cities. Ironically my wife always wanted and wants things from the cities we left behind. For example, she wants palak, green peas and fulgobi (vegetables) from Delhi, Fish from Mumbai, Farsan from Ahmedabad, Miso soup and Yakisoba from Japan, Mysore pak from Bangalore. These small things keep us connected to the cities we had lived in.

Honda Cars India starts production of new City sedan

New Delhi: Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL), on Tuesday has announced that it has commenced production of fifth generation Honda City sedan at the company's Greater Noida plant in Uttar Pradesh.

As the automaker claims, Honda City is one of its most successful cars in India with high brand equity. It was first introduced in India back in January 1998 and later launched as 2nd generation in November 2003. The third generation model came in September 2008, while fourth generation City was launched in January 2014.

India Quarantined: A Misfortune That Became a Fortune

Our entire country is facing lockdown for the last two months and this is how nature has found a way of regaining its lost wealth in this period. Yes, you may call it a plan, or a surprise from mother earth. After looking at the current situation, one can never say that this lockdown in India was not advantageous. Air pollution decreased after the lockdown, nature is healing after the lockdown. All nature has received from our end was excessive pollution, chopping trees, degrading the quality of nature, and whatnot. After all the misery that we’ve put our planet through, it was almost impossible for us to see the purity of nature again. We never thought that we would witness the clear skyline, visibly pure rivers, and feather flocks together living their life without any fear.

Lockdown in India from the start:

When we try to explain the term pollution, the first thing that pops up in our mind is an unhealthy environment. The environment which is unhygienic for everyone. An environment that has become a source of grave problems around us. When we think about all this, we should admit being the reasons for such great loss.

The 10 most polluted cities in the world are all in Northern India. Many have claimed that New Delhi’s air a bit more polluted than that in other major capitals such as London.

Narendra Modi tweeted on 5th June 2014, which is celebrated as World Environment Day – “World Environment Day- a day to bow to Mother Earth and to reaffirm our pledge to protect the environment, making our planet cleaner and greener”. Though many efforts were being made, this lockdown gave our Mother Earth a chance to revive herself and bring forward a pollution-free environment. And the best part is, some of us are doing a great job by being on nature’s side. For those who are not, they should start thinking about a better future and must support it.

Smoke from vehicles, industries, factories, and even dust is the major reason for pollution of air. All these activities were important for our daily needs. We never thought of shutting down any factory or industry, although they were causing pollution. Livelihoods of labourers were dependent. Vehicles, no doubt are an important part of life for everyone. Some people earn through it, some use it for everyday transportation.

As we all know the lockdown started from 24th March 2020. The moment our government took this decision, a number of activities which were causing pollution were banned. Not for saving the environment but for saving lives. Whatever the reason was, this decision brought a drastic change in our environment. We can proudly say that right now we are living in an environment which is much safer than it was before.

No Vehicles + No Industries+ No factories+ No Smoke = Pollution-free Environment

Coming towards Delhi:

We feel proud while saying that the Capital of our Nation India is New Delhi. So how can we miss talking about Delhi and the effects of COVID19 upon it?

According to CNN, India is home to 21 of the world’s 30 cities with the worst air pollution. New Delhi tops that list.

I tried to show some glimpse of Delhi before and after lockdown. All of us were waiting for this moment and never thought of looking towards this beautiful scenario ever.

Good things come with a price:

We know this very well, nothing in this world is free of cost. We need to pay something in return, even to smile. This lockdown gave us a lot of good things, and it took away some of it too. “Money” is an important factor that leads our lives. And when we come to know that thing which controls most of the people is being disrupted, how one will react. Please don’t confuse yourself. Of course, our environment and its safety are far important than anything else.

Christopher Wood, Global Head of Equity Strategy at Jefferies, says that Lockdown in countries like India and Indonesia are more disastrous for human welfare and economies since there is no help for small businesses nor are their unemployment benefits.

This prolonged lockdown along with rain and hailstorm in many regions has forced farmers to move towards moneylenders. Shut factories and businesses, suspended flights, stopped trains, and restricted movement of vehicles and people must have cost approx. 7-8 lakh crore to our Indian Economy. Only essential goods and services such as agriculture, mining, utility services, some financial and IT services, and public services were allowed to operate. So we can say 70% of our economic activity has come to standstill.

“While the countrywide shutdown is scheduled to be lifted from April 15, 2020, the risks of prolonged disruption in economic activities exist depending on the intensity of the outbreak,” the credit rating agency said.

Transport, hotel, restaurant, and real estate activities are the ones who are suffering the most during this hard time.

All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) secretary-general Naveen Gupta said the accumulated losses to truckers during the first 15 days of lockdown were about Rs 35,200 crore given an average Rs 2,200 loss to per truck per day.

“More than 90 per cent of the about one crore trucks in the country are off roads during the lockdown as truckers with only essential commodities are on the move,” he said. “Even if the lockdown is lifted, it will take at least 2 to 3 months for truckers to limp to some normal scale as we apprehend consumption of non-essential items to remain hit on the account of lack of purchasing power.”

The economic crisis in India is the hottest topic to be discussed. Whether it’s poor or rich, everyone is affected.

We have always learned to be good enough to fight all crises. This situation will have an outcome soon. All we need is patience and support. Don’t let poor fall apart. Don’t exploit them. India is here because we are here. We are here because India is here. Every one of us is dependent upon each other by some or the other way.

Timeline: How the new coronavirus spread | Coronavirus pandemic News

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a pandemic over a new coronavirus which causes an illness known as COVID-19 that has spread to nearly every country.

The disease has killed more than 356,000 people and infected 5.7 million, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. More than 2.3 million people have recovered.

Below is a timeline:

On May 28, South Korea reimposed a series of restrictions for two weeks after 79 new cases were reported in the largest daily rise since April 5.

On May 27, the United States became the first country to reach a six-figure death toll, as the number of people killed from the coronavirus surpassed 100,000, a grim milestone.

South Korea saw its biggest surge in new coronavirus cases in 49 days with 40 new infections, most of which were linked to a retail logistics centre west of Seoul.

Spain began a 10-day official mourning period in memory of the more than 27,000 people who lost their lives to the virus in the country.

On May 26, India reported its biggest jump in coronavirus cases for a seventh consecutive day, taking its total number of infections to 145,380.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide passed the 5.5 million mark, as the WHO’s regional body warned that the outbreak was accelerating in Brazil, Peru and Chile as the Americas have become the new pandemic epicentre.

On May 25, Japan lifted a nationwide state of emergency over the coronavirus, gradually reopening the world’s third-largest economy as government officials warned caution was still necessary to prevent another wave.

The United States barred arrivals from Brazil, the country with the second-highest number of cases in the world after the US.

Meanwhile in Russia, the number of coronavirus cases climbed to 353,427, with 8,946 new infections in the past 24 hours.

May 18 – 24

On May 19, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus promised an independent review of the global pandemic response, after countries at a virtual meeting of the World Health Assembly called for a probe.

On the same day in the UK, unemployment claims jumped from 856,000 people to 2.1 million as the pandemic took hold and hit the labour market.

The number of coronavirus cases worldwide reached the five million mark on May 21, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. The United States, Russia and Brazil stood as the countries with the highest number of infections.

Chinese authorities registered on May 23 zero new infections of coronavirus for the first time since they began reporting data in January. About 80 million infants could be at risk of vaccine-preventable diseases such as diphtheria, measles and polio due to disruption of routine immunisation caused by the pandemic, UN agencies have warned.

On May 24 Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid al-Fitr with millions under strict stay-at-home orders and many fearing renewed coronavirus outbreaks. Meanwhile, Russia recorded its highest death toll since the pandemic began, with 153 news deaths bringing the total to 3,541 among 344,481 cases.

May 11 – 17

Saudi Arabia said on May 11 it would impose tough austerity measures by tripling its Value Added Tax from 5 percent to 15 percent, in addition to halting monthly handout payments to citizens in order to cope with record low oil prices and a coronavirus-led economic slump.

On May 14, The United Nations predicted the coronavirus pandemic would shrink the world economy by 3.2 percent this year, the sharpest contraction since the Great Depression in the 1930s, pushing an estimated 34.3 million people into extreme poverty, mostly in Africa.

Officials confirmed on May 15 the first coronavirus infection of a Rohingya refugee in the sprawling camps in southern Bangladesh.

On May 16, India’s coronavirus cases surpassed China’s with the health ministry reporting 85,940 infections and 2,752 deaths. The worst-hit Indian states are Maharashtra with 29,100 cases, Tamil Nadu 10,108, Gujarat 9,931 and New Delhi 8,895. India extended a nearly two-month-old stringent lockdown by another two weeks.

Former US President Barack Obama criticised the country’s leaders on May 17 for their handling of the coronavirus response, telling college graduates in an online commencement address that the pandemic shows many officials “aren’t even pretending to be in charge”.

May 4 – 10

On May 5, the United Kingdom recorded the highest official COVID-19 death toll in Europe, with more than 30,000 people dead.

In a reversal from earlier statements, US President Donald Trump said on May 7 that the emergency task force handling his administration’s response to the coronavirus outbreak will not be wound down, and will instead continue its work “indefinitely”.

The WHO warned on May 8, that 83,000 to 190,000 people in Africa could be killed by the coronavirus disease in the first year and infect between 29 million and 44 million during that period if it is not contained.

On May 10, both China and South Korea reported new spikes in coronavirus cases, with Seoul recording 34 new cases – its biggest single-day jump in about a month.

April 27 – May 3

The number of US cases surpassed on April 28 one million, a third of global infections, while the death toll exceeded 57,000.

On April 29, Gilead Sciences’ remdesivir proved effective against the new coronavirus in a major study, shortening the time it takes for patients to recover by four days on average, according to US government and company officials. The news came as the US economy took its hardest hit since the height of the Great Recession, with its GDP contracting 4.8 percent in the first quarter of the year.

More than 30 million people in the US filed claims on April 30 for jobless benefits since the beginning of coronavirus-related lockdowns. Meanwhile, the eurozone’s economy shrunk by 3.8 percent in the first quarter, the biggest hit since records began in 1995.

On May 3, Afghanistan’s health ministry raised the alarm over the spread of the new coronavirus after a small study with random tests in Kabul suggested that about a third of the capital’s residents could be infected.

April 20 – 26

On April 21, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he “will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!”

Meanwhile, a report by the UN World Food Programme warned that the number of people facing acute food insecurity could double, jumping to 265 million, because of the disruptions caused by the pandemic, including border closures.

The pandemic is expected to drive carbon dioxide emissions down by six percent this year, the head of the World Meteorological Organization said on April 22, in what would be the biggest yearly drop since World War II.

On April 23, the number of US citizens who filed for first-time unemployment benefits in the five weeks since the start of coronavirus-related lockdowns reached a record 26 million.

The confirmed number of coronavirus-related deaths worldwide on April 25 reached another grim milestone by exceeding the 200,000 threshold.

On the same day, the WHO warned against countries issuing so-called “immunity passports” to those who have recovered from COVID-19, saying there was no scientific evidence to prove that these people develop immunity against potential infection in the future.

On April 26, the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the global coronavirus pandemic began, said it had no remaining cases of the infection in its hospitals, with all patients treated for COVID-19 discharged. Saudi Arabia partially lifted the curfew in all regions of the kingdom while keeping a 24-hour curfew in Mecca and previously isolated neighbourhoods.

April 13 – 19

On April 14, both India and France extended a nationwide lockdown, until May 3 and May 11, respectively. On the same day, Taiwan reported no new cases for the first time in more than a month.

Meanwhile, as known infections worldwide surpassed two million on April 15, the International Monetary Fund said the global economy was expected to shrink by three percent this year – the biggest contraction since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

On April 17, Saudi Arabia’s grand mufti said prayers during Ramadan and the subsequent Eid al-Fitr festival should be performed at home if the coronavirus outbreak continues, according to a Saudi newspaper.

Turkey surpassed Iran for the most infections in the Middle East on April 19, as cases there rose to 86,306.

April 6 – 12

On April 6, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was moved into intensive care as his condition worsened after being hospitalised in London with persistent COVID-19 symptoms. He was released from intensive care on April 9 and was discharged from hospital on April 12.

On April 7, Japan declared a state of emergency amid a spike in coronavirus cases, while Singapore began a partial lockdown.

On April 8, Wuhan began allowing people to leave for the first time since the central Chinese city was sealed off 76 days ago to contain the coronavirus that first emerged there late last year. In Singapore, the use of Zoom for online education was suspended after hackers hijacked a lesson and showed obscene images to students.

The UK announced its worst single-day death toll on April 10, with a further 980 people who had contracted coronavirus losing their lives in the 24 hours before Thursday evening.

The US recorded on April 11 a total death toll of 20,071, surpassing Italy’s toll of 19,468. Cases in the US topped 519,000.

March 30 – April 5

On March 31, the number of deaths due to coronavirus in the US surpassed those reported by China, where the new coronavirus was detected late last year. By the end of the week, the US reported more than 4,000 amid more than 300,000 cases.

On April 1, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned the coronavirus pandemic presents the world with its “worst crisis” since World War II as the global total of confirmed COVID-19 cases reached one million and the worldwide death toll topped 50,000.

On April 3, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned governments in the Middle East that they must act quickly to limit the spread of the coronavirus as cases in the region have risen to nearly 60,000 – almost double the tally of a week earlier.

In the United Kingdom, Johnson was taken to a hospital on April 5 after showing persistent symptoms, 10 days after testing positive for the virus.

On the same day, Iran, the worst-hit country in the Middle East, reported a total death toll of 3,603 amid 58,226 cases. However, President Hassan Rouhani said that “low-risk” economic activities would resume from April 11.

March 23 – 29

In the US, the White House and Senate leaders of both parties struck an agreement on March 25 on a sweeping $2 trillion measure to aid workers, businesses and a healthcare system strained by pandemic. By the end of the week, the US accounted for the highest number of coronavirus infections in the world, recording more than 124,000 cases and 2,000 deaths, more than double the figure two days before.

Meanwhile, as the number of cases worldwide surpassed 600,000, with more than 27,000 deaths on March 27, India and South Africa joined the countries to impose lockdowns. Kenya, Kazakhstan and Honduras reported their first deaths, while Johnson announced he had tested positive.

In Europe, Spain recorded 838 new coronavirus deaths over the previous 24 hours on March 29, marking the country’s highest daily jump in fatalities. The country was now second only to Italy where the death toll shot past 10,000 with 889 new deaths.

March 16 – 22

On March 18, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison declared, for the first time ever, a “human biosecurity emergency” in the country. On the other side of the Pacific ocean, Chile and Guatemala shut down their borders hoping strict measures would curb the spread of the virus.

But in rare positive news, no new domestic cases were reported in China for the first time since the start of the outbreak.

On March 20, coronavirus-related deaths surged past 10,000 globally. More cases were reported in Turkey and Pakistan, while Iran registered a total of 14,991 infections and 853 deaths.

On March 21, as Europe remained the epicentre of the pandemic, with Italy reporting 4,825 fatalities amid 53,578 cases, the EU took the unprecedented step to suspend rules on public deficits, giving countries free rein to inject spending into the economy as needed.

On March 22, Palestinian officials in the besieged Gaza Strip announced the first two coronavirus cases.

March 9 – 15

On March 9, Iran released said some 70,000 prisoners had been released because of the coronavirus outbreak in the country, without specifying if or when those freed would need to return to jail.

On March 10, Lebanon and Morocco reported their first deaths from the virus.

In a long-anticipated move, the WHO on March 11 declared on the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, while Turkey, Ivory Coast, Honduras, Bolivia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Panama and Mongolia confirmed their first cases. In Qatar, infections jumped drastically from 24 to 262 in a single day.

On March 15, Kazakhstan, the Philippines and Austria tightened restrictions in a bid to contain the pandemic.

March 2 – 8

On March 5, Saudi Arabia announced its first coronavirus case.

China’s Health Commission reported 99 new cases on March 7, down from 143 cases the day before, with a total of 80,651 cases nationwide. Official data showed the country’s exports plunging 17.2 percent in the first two months of the year after the outbreak brought much of the country to a halt.

On Monday 8, Saudi authorities locked down the eastern Qatif region and announced the suspension of all schools and universities across the country until further notice.

In a sweeping move, Italy imposed a strict quarantine in the state of Lombardy and 14 other areas in the north, affecting a total of 16 million people.

February 24 – March 1

This week marked the confirmation of first cases in countries across the world, including Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Norway, Romania, Greece, Georgia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, North Macedonia, Brazil, Estonia, Denmark, Northern Ireland and the Netherlands, Lithuania and Wales.

On February 25, Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi, who, a day earlier, had given a press briefing on the outbreak, confirmed he had coronavirus. The country’s official total reached 95 cases with 15 deaths.

As the number of infections passed 82,000 worldwide on February 27, including more than 2,800 deaths, the US was considering invoking the Defense Production Act which would grant President Donald Trump the power to expand industrial production of key materials or products for national security.

February 17 – 23

On February 19, Iran reported two deaths from the coronavirus, hours after confirming its first cases, while South Korea reported on February 20 its first death from the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, China said the death toll had risen to 2,118 while the total number of cases reached 74,576. The country’s health commission reported daily infections dropped to the lowest in almost a month, a result of authorities only counting cases confirmed by genetic testing in Hubei.

On February 21, Israel reported its first confirmed case after a woman who returned from a cruise ship tested positive.

In Italy, officials confirmed a third death on February 23, while local authorities brought the Venice Carnival to an early close and suspended sports events.

February 10 – 16

As of February 10, China had 908 confirmed deaths and a total of 40,171 infections, prompting President Xi Jinping to appear in public for the first time since the outbreak began, visiting a hospital in the capital, Beijing, and urging confidence in the battle against the virus.

Five days later, a February 3 speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping, published by state media, indicated the government knew about the threat of the virus well before the public alarm was raised.

On February 11, the WHO announced that the disease caused by new coronavirus would be called “COVID-19”. The new coronavirus itself was dubbed SARS-CoV-2.

On February 13, Japan confirmed its first death linked to the virus.

Egypt became the first country in Africa on February 14, to report a case and France reported Europe’s first death from the virus. On February 16, Taiwan reported its first death.

February 3 – 9

On February 6, authorities in Malaysia reported the country’s first known human-to-human transmission while the number of people infected in Europe reached 30.

On February 7, Li Wenliang, a doctor who was among the first to sound the alarm over the coronavirus in China, died, and Hong Kong introduced prison sentences for anyone breaching quarantine rules.

On February 9, the death toll in China surpassed that of the 2002-03 SARS epidemic, with 811 deaths recorded and 37,198 infections. An investigative team led by experts from the WHO departed for China.

January 27 – February 2

On January 30, the WHO declared the coronavirus a global emergency as the death toll in China jumped to 170, with 7,711 cases reported in the country, where the virus had spread to all 31 provinces. By the end of the week, China reported 304 deaths amid 14,380 infections.

Within a few days, new cases were confirmed in India, Philippines, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore, the US, the UAE and Vietnam.

On February 2, the Philippines reported the first death outside China, the victim being a Chinese man from Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province where the new coronavirus was detected in late 2019.

January 20 – 26

On January 20, China reported a third death and more than 200 infections, with cases also reported outside Hubei province including in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Meanwhile, a Chinese expert on infectious diseases confirmed human-to-human transmission to state broadcaster CCTV, raising fears of a major outbreak as millions travelled for the Lunar New Year holiday.

The cities of Wuhan, Xiantao and Chibi in Hubei province were placed under effective quarantine on January 23 as air and rail departures were suspended. By the end of the week, more areas were placed under lockdown affecting a total of 56 million people.

The WHO said that the outbreak did not yet constitute a public emergency of international concern and there was “no evidence” of the virus spreading between humans outside of China.

January 13 – 19

The WHO reported on January 13 a case in Thailand, the first outside of China, in a woman who had arrived from Wuhan.

On January 17, as a second death was reported in Wuhan, health authorities in the US announced that three airports would start screening passengers arriving from the city.

Authorities in the US, Nepal, France, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan confirmed cases over the following days.

January 6 – 12

On January 7, officials announced they had identified a new virus, according to the WHO. The novel virus was named 2019-nCoV and was identified as belonging to the coronavirus family, which includes SARS and the common cold.

On January 11, China announced its first death from the virus, a 61-year-old man who had purchased goods from the seafood market. Treatment did not improve his symptoms after he was admitted to hospital and he died of heart failure on the evening of January 9.

December 31 – January 5

On December 31 last year, China alerted the WHO to several cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan, a city of 11 million people. The virus was unknown.

Several of those infected worked at the city’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which was shut down on January 1. As health experts worked to identify the virus amid growing alarm, the number of infections exceeded 40.

On January 5, Chinese officials ruled out the possibility that this was a recurrence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus – an illness that originated in China and killed more than 770 people worldwide in 2002-2003.

In 2001, in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Kutch, Dastkar, the nationally-recognised society for crafts, created the Artisan Support Fund to help weavers and craftspeople rebuild their homes and livelihood. Nearly two decades later, Dastkar (http://dastkar.org/) has revived its Artisan Support Fund and has appealed for help. As COVID-19 cases surged in India and lockdown was enforced, work came to a standstill for weaving and craft communities.

In many regions, new orders are likely only after the existing stock in stores and e-commerce sites are cleared, which will happen gradually after restrictions are eased. In several clusters, supply of raw materials such as cotton has taken a beating. Along with weavers, the spinners, dyers, printers and embroiderers are all out of work. Most of them are daily or weekly wage earners.

Enterprises working with artisans have been raising funds and mobilising essential supplies. However, these are intermittent measures. The organisations state that long-term solutions are necessary to revive the handloom sector.

Pre-book orders

Sudha Rani of Abhihaara Social Enterprise in Hyderabad has pending stock worth more than ₹15 lakh. She liaises with weavers in Narayanpet, Pochampally and Gadwal and had commissioned saris for an exhibition in Delhi, a spring-summer event in Hyderabad and summer weddings. “How will I pay weavers and craftspeople? It’s going to take time for sales to pick up. Even when the lockdown is lifted, saris and garments are not going to be on priority shopping lists for many consumers,” she says.

On Instagram (@abhihaara) and on WhatsApp, Abhihaara has requested handloom patrons to pre-book saris that can be shipped once restrictions are lifted. “Sixty women have pre-booked so far. Regular customers are willing to pay the full amount, for the others we charge 50%. We are not accepting international orders because we are unsure how things would go,” says Sudha.

The story is similar in other regions of India. Himachal-based social enterprise Color Caravan (@thecolourcaravan on Instagram) is accepting bookings for artisanal knit products made by rural women. Swati Seth, the founder, hopes to get work orders for the women: “In many households, the husbands who are employed in resorts or ply cabs have no work since tourism has paused in the hills,” she says.

Stepping up the effort

Fashion Design Council of India (fdci.org) has announced a COVID-19 support fund to help small firms.

Anita Dongre announced a medical fund of ₹1.5 crore to support the fashion house’s smaller vendors, self-employed artisans, and partners. The label has also begun manufacturing masks in the rural clusters of Charoti and Dhanaveri in Maharashtra. Around 7,000 masks will be made each week for distribution to NGOs, village residents, individuals, and to hospitals on demand.

Obeetee, the hand-woven carpet label that works with 25,000 weavers and designers in Mirzapur, has been raising funds and distributing essentials for its weavers.

Cotton Rack (cottonrack.com), founded by Vinayak and Rameshwari, works with weavers in West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir. When the firm announced discounts of 15% and 30% to sell its existing stock, a few regular customers opted not to use the discount code and pay the full price, to help weavers. Vinayak points out that in cities recording high number of COVID-19 cases, like Jaipur where he is based, a longer lockdown is likely: “Weavers in rural areas might be free to work, but how do I send them the yarn? We need to look at ways to maintain the work flow for weavers and to sustain our small business,” he says.

Need for State intervention

In Madhya Pradesh’s Maheshwar, the textile region known for its gossamer silk-cotton weaves, the artisans spend the scorching summer months producing saris, fabrics and accessories that can be sold to tourists who visit the region in the cooler months, beginning October. “Most of the sales depend on tourism and with that unlikely to get back to normal this year, the situation is bleak,” says Sourodip Ghosh, executive director of The Handloom School set up by Women Weave, the social enterprise founded by Sally Holkar.

Women Weave (womenweave.org) has initiated a crowdsourced contingency fund, aiming to raise ₹14 lakh to help its weaver clusters. Sourodip explains that smaller weavers depend on master weavers for workflow and the masters commission work only on demand, “To try and clear the pending stock, we’ve written to district-level authorities and plan to contact State-level authorities, requesting them to buy stocks from weavers for the State-run Mrignayanee handloom stores.”

E-commerce potential

When the markets reopen, innovative marketing strategies will be the need of the hour, says Nivedita Rai, executive director of Gudi Mudi Khadi project in Maheshwar: “E-commerce giants like Amazon and Ajio are beginning to sell handlooms and we plan to approach them,” she says, asserting that concrete measures need to be taken going forward.

Ravi Kiran, proprietor of Bengaluru-based Metaphor Racha who works extensively with khadi weavers in villages of north Karnataka says what we perceive could be just the tip of the iceberg: “A complete understanding of the situation will happen once the lockdown lifts and we travel to rural clusters.” He says it’s imperative to enable more workflow, with the participation of both government and private entities. He is glad that around 30 regular clients have pre-booked orders on metaphorracha.com, ensuring some work for the artisans.

Rekindle love for handlooms

On the brighter side, the lockdown has made people appreciate things that are local. In a bid to rekindle the love for handlooms, GoCoop launched the #Kindnessinkind campaign a few days ago, inviting customers to post photographs of their favourite artisanal products. So far, they have received 50 testimonials and 60 bookings for orders. Siva Devireddy, the founder, is trying to collaborate with individual donors and corporates to help weavers sustain for the next three months, and says the value chain needs to be rebuilt, to prevent weavers from migrating to other professions: “The markets may respond differently in the post-COVID-19 scenario. We need to find ways to help weavers directly sell their products.”

While craft organisations are trying to help, government bodies are yet to address the concerns of the handloom and craft sectors.

Arup Rakshit from Mahatma Gandhi Gramodyog Seva Sanstha (MGGSS), Kolkata, who works with weavers, spinners and dyers in West Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, says most Government agencies, Khadi society and weavers cooperatives have stopped their orders. “Once the lockdown is lifted, the Government must intervene and help weavers sell the stock they have at home. Other than providing rations to the BPL ration card holders, no other help has been extended,” he points out.

However, Arup is hopeful that there will be a resurgence in demand for handlooms that contribute towards a sustainable lifestyle.
