okay monsoon let's get our minds off of what's happening. tell me about soc jack?
okay so!! (in my head jack and kelly are specifically hindu punjabis; jacks a teen)
it was new year’s this weekend!! happy vaisakhi!!
im picturing sam googling late one night and finding out all the holidays jack should be celebrating, carefully putting reminders into his calendar app, along with notes of what he has to buy or make and automated emails/texts that make sure he isn’t going to be contacted for a hunt.
so the week before vaisakhi, sam fakes a hunt on the east coast - it’s not technically a lie, he is going to be going to the east coast, there could technically be something there that needs hunting. instead, he ends up in new jersey, taking a deep breath to steel himself before stepping out of the car and into the middle of a bustling town square.
to his right, there’s a restaurant with a picture of its menu in the window, dosa and idlis and upma, kulfi and tea and filter coffee. sam makes a mental note to stop by after his other errand, the real reason he’s here today, in a small town near edison nj that’s almost half indian.
the first store he goes to only has women’s clothing, and the second is populated with that cheap, scratchy, polyester that jack can’t stand, that’ll send him into a meltdown if he has to touch it for too long. he finds a third one, half tucked behind a carpet store, bright fluorescent lights almost giving him a headache.
there’s an older man behind the counter who’s simultaneously sewing sequins onto a sleeve and watching an old bollywood rerun on the tv hung up in the corner. sam knocks on the door, a little awkward, and the man’s purple turban lifts as he stops what he’s doing.
“sat sri akaal, uncle ji,” he says, in stilted punjabi, and folds his hands. the man looks a little surprised. “punjabi? i didn’t expect- well, that teaches me for assuming. what do you need?”
sam pulls out his phone and turns it on so it shows his lockscreen, a picture of cas and dean with jack between them, smiling like the sun. “this is my son. his mom is kind of out of the picture. i know vaisakhi is coming up, and i’d like to get him something new to wear. it’s his first time spending the holiday with me and someone said you have the best stuff? he doesn’t like polyesters and acrylics, and a lot of suits are hard for him to wear because of the extra work on them. he says the beading and sequins are scratchy.”
“of course, my boy! let’s find something he will like. you know, my daughter is like that - she can’t wear anything that’s not simple and soft. expensive taste! somehow the plainest things, the most everyday items, are the best quality. did you have a color?”
the man - jagdeep singh, came to this country in 1973, father to two daughters and a child, his oldest is going to med school, the middle is a writer, and the youngest is still in school, but he thinks they will be a scientist - and sam spend almost an hour going around, picking out a few perfect suits and kurtas for jack. one in a light blue, one in a gold with magenta accents, and a bright, pea-shoot green that reminds sam of life and will be perfect for vaisakhi celebrations.
he pays, and mr. singh slides him the clothes in a bag, along with a business card that has his number and address written in immaculate cursive. “you are a very sweet boy,” mr singh says, smiling at sam and rearraging his long salt and pepper beard. “come see me and my family some day. i think my child will like you, and i would very much life to meet your son. your brother and brother-in-law sound like a handful, but they are also welcome.”
“i don’t- thank you. thank you, sir.” sam says and mr. singh tsks at him. “call me uncle. ‘sir’ makes me feel like one of these old white bastards.” he winks, and sam lets out a laugh. “thank you then, uncle,” he says. “would you like some tea? i was going to go get some from the place two streets down?”
.
jack, of course, loves his kurta.

Deccan Spice, Edison NJ.
Literally the best Indian food in Edison NJ, which is a bold statement. From classics such as Saag Paneer to fusion items like Manchurian cauliflower, to avant garde takes on other cuisines like Lobster Bisque, their chef nails them all.
This is one of those places where you put a bite in your mouth and wonder how exactly the chef managed to get exactly that combination of spices into each mouthful. Sweet, spicy, savory. Surprising flavors, perfect textures. Vegetables are always at just that soft snap, and meats have the resilient but tender mouth feel that speaks to long slow time on low heat gently melting together.
Do yourself a favor and try at least one of the soups - they're all delightful. Try something you've never heard of, maybe from the Chefs Special list. Get an old favorite. Deccan Spice will knock them all out of the park.
The decor is just right for a date night with your significant other, definitely worthy of the spiffy outfit. They have a full bar with both American standards and Indian cocktails.
Dessert is fine but unremarkable. We have taken to simply heading over to one of the many Indian sweet shops in the area for our after-dinner gulab jamun or kir with chai.
If nothing else, go to gawk at the two serving robots that augment their service staff. These fun gadgets bring food to the table and bus empties. All servers take orders on hand held devices, another way management is using technology to streamline his operation.
Sadly, service is the only area not top-notch at Deccan Spice. Their servers seem overworked and a bit undertrained. Indeed management spoke of labor challenges - quite common going into 2022 and out of the COVID pandemic. We've experienced a fair amount of delay and confusion on orders and overall service. I would love to see about 25% more service staff on the floor, and about 50% additional patron contact within a meal.
Prices are moderately high, but no more than you'd expect to pay for a fine dining meal in, say New Brunswick or Cranberry. This place has become our "Indian date night' standard. We literally have never been disappointed with the food, and have been able to overlook the occasional lapses in service.
It's a rare treat to find a restaurant that can execute so well on so many different dimensions. In a town known for excellent Indian eateries like Moghul and Sukhadia, the bar is set high for outstanding Indian cuisine. Deccan Spice surely delivers.
