Day 10 : The Gulaal - Jaiselmer
18th March 2023
After a vegetarian meal under the stars we retired early to our room for a shower and a chill.
This hotel is fabulous however the view from an our window is of a building site although looking out from it now, I can’t actually see anyone working the machinery that has been left there. We’ve also had several power cuts, the most notable, was one that caused a total black out whilst I was showering. It was completely pitch black with not a glimmer of light, so I though it best just to keep warm under the hot water until the electricity was restored
Todays first stop was Gadiser Lake, a holy expanse of water that is kept topped up by a canal. Within this lake are catfish around 5 foot long and they have the circumference of a large bucket. Gangi, our guide said that people fished these near mythical monsters for food, however they didn’t taste at all good.
Behind the lake were the Ghats, which are the cremation pyres for Hindus and next to them the burial plots for the Muslim
Our next stop was Jaisalmer Fort which also goes by the name Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) as it rises from the desert itself and seems to become one with the golden hues of the sand. The setting sun adds its own magic and shrouds the fort with mystique. The fort is constructed in the classic style of the royals by local craftsmen. This fort is a world heritage site and around 5000 people live within its walls, mostly from Brahim and Rajput descent.
Its narrow streets are cobbled, broken and steep and gutters run along along side. We left our transport at the bottom gate and began our long slow walk into the fort. I was careful not to slip on the worn stones, but a very old man was squatting on the ground with a chisel and hammer knocking tiny holes into the ground to make the surface a little rougher.
The traffic of men, women, children, dogs, scooters, motor bikes and cows came from every direction, we veered and swerved around each other in some sort of dance, there was me jumping out of the way at every horn blast, trying to avoid the dung that was so freely strewn across the ground, but the cows refused to move and stood their ground, their docile, unblinking , brown eyes staring resolutely ahead of them.
We went into a Jain Temple to admire the stonework on its wall and columns.
Jainism is one of the world’s oldest religions, originating in India at least 2,500 years ago. The spiritual goal of Jainism is to become liberated from the endless cycle of rebirth and to achieve an all-knowing state called moksha. This can be attained by living a nonviolent life, with as little negative impact on any living thing. Some Jains even refuse to eat anything grown from under the ground, they cover their mouths to stop them inhaling insects and in some cases employ people to walk ahead of them, sweeping the ground and thus avoiding stepping on any forms of life.
By midday, the aroma of the fort grew heady with the smell of cooking food, petrol fumes, cow pats and urine or sewage of some sort. The intense heat didn’t help at all and I was ready to get back to the calm of the hotel.
A visit to the sand dunes was planned for this evening to see the sunset, however this excursion included a camel ride. In all honesty my conscience wouldn’t let me go. I know how some animals are treated in this country with little concern for their welfare and well being, for the sake of 15 minutes of entertainment, the poor camel may have suffered a lifetime of pain. So we declined and sat by the pool instead catching up on news and dozing, the cool desert wind like a warm blanket covering us.
So tomorrow we are on the move again.

How Sending Luggage by Courier Turned My Mistake into an Adventure
Travel can be unpredictable. What began as a packing mishap on my Rajasthan tour turned into an unexpected lesson in freedom, spontaneity, and unburdened exploration. I never imagined that sending the luggage by courier service could transform my journey into a thrilling adventure across India.
The Packing Dilemma That Sparked a New Perspective
When planning my two-week trip across Rajasthan, I envisioned picturesque forts, colourful bazaars, and grand palaces. But I overestimated how much I’d need to bring. My suitcase was a behemoth filled with everything from ethnic outfits for photoshoots to heavy winter wear for the chilly desert nights.
At Jaipur railway station, the weight of my luggage—literally—became too much to handle. Moving between cities like Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Jaisalmer with that suitcase seemed impossible. That’s when I remembered Avaan Excess, a courier service I’d heard about.
After a quick call, my luggage problem found its solution. The seasoned team of Avaan, the best courier service of India, arranged for my suitcase to be picked up at my hotel and sent directly to Udaipur, my final destination. They assured me it would arrive safely in three days. With my suitcase sorted, I packed a few chosen clothing, woolens and essentials into a manageable backpack and set out to explore Rajasthan unburdened.
Discovering Rajasthan’s Wonders—Luggage-Free
Leaving my bulky suitcase behind felt like shedding a weight I didn’t know I was carrying. For the first time, I experienced what it was like to travel lightly.
In Jaipur
Jaipur greeted me with its iconic pink hues, and without my luggage, I wandered freely through the Amber Fort and City Palace. My backpack was all I needed as I explored the bazaars, picking up trinkets and textiles without worrying about space or weight.
In Jodhpur
Jodhpur was next, with its sprawling Mehrangarh Fort and the enchanting blue houses of the old city. The freedom of traveling light meant I could easily navigate the narrow lanes, stopping at roadside cafés and chatting with locals.
In Jaisalmer
By the time I reached Jaisalmer, I had fully embraced the joys of a lighter journey. I stayed in a heritage haveli within the bustling Jaisalmer Fort and took a sunset camel safari into the Thar Desert. The carefree nature of my travel was exhilarating—no logistics about luggage, just pure experiences.
Reuniting with My Luggage in Udaipur
Finally, I arrived in Udaipur, the City of Lakes, where my suitcase awaited me, just as Avaan had promised. Their updates during the journey had reassured me, and everything was delivered intact.
Having my luggage back meant I could now enjoy the final leg of my trip with all the items I’d initially packed. I dressed up for a cultural evening by Lake Pichola and relaxed, knowing that Avaan had made this seamless journey possible. Sending my luggage by courier made this trip a tale of many fanciful memories.
What I Learned About Travel and Freedom
This experience taught me an invaluable lesson: travel is about immersing yourself in the moment, not being weighed down by unnecessary baggage. Sending my suitcase ahead allowed me to truly experience the cities I visited—exploring bustling streets, historical sites, and local culture without the constant worry of dragging heavy bags.
Avaan, the best international Courier service in India, gave me the freedom to explore Rajasthan with ease. Their professional service ensured I didn’t have to compromise on comfort or convenience.
The Takeaway
The best journeys happen when you leave the unnecessary behind. Avaan Excess turned what could have been a stressful ordeal into an adventure filled with spontaneity and joy. If you’re planning a trip and worrying about overpacking, don’t let it hold you back—sending luggage by courier allows you to embrace the freedom of traveling light.
With Avaan Excess, you can enjoy hassle-free travel while your luggage reaches your destination safely. Next time you find yourself overpacking, remember—your adventure awaits, and Avaan is here to make it happen!

Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo adventure, finding the perfect place to stay is crucial to making your trip memorable. This article serves as the ultimate checklist for Jaisalmer hotel booking, ensuring that your stay is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
1. Determine Your Budget
Before you start searching for a hotel in Jaisalmer, it's essential to determine your budget. Jaisalmer offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious heritage hotels. Knowing how much you're willing to spend will help narrow down your choices and prevent you from overspending. Keep in mind that the price of a Jaisalmer hotel booking can vary depending on the season, with peak tourist months (October to March) being more expensive.
2. Choose the Right Location
Jaisalmer is a relatively small city, but the location of your hotel can significantly impact your experience. If you want to be close to the main attractions, consider staying in or around the Jaisalmer Fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort area is home to several boutique hotels and guesthouses that offer stunning views of the city and the desert. Alternatively, if you prefer a quieter environment, you might want to look for a hotel on the outskirts of the city, where you can enjoy the serene beauty of the desert.
3. Check the Amenities
When making a Jaisalmer hotel booking, it's important to consider the amenities that are important to you. If you're traveling during the summer months, air conditioning is a must, as temperatures can soar during the day. Other amenities to look for include free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast, a swimming pool, and a restaurant that serves local cuisine. If you're planning to explore the desert, some hotels offer camel safaris and desert camping experiences, which can be a great addition to your stay.
4. Read Reviews and Ratings
One of the best ways to gauge the quality of a hotel in Jaisalmer is by reading reviews and ratings from previous guests. Websites like TripAdvisor, Booking.com, and Google Reviews offer valuable insights into the experiences of other travelers. Pay attention to comments about the cleanliness of the rooms, the friendliness of the staff, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel. Keep in mind that no hotel is perfect, but a consistent pattern of positive reviews is a good sign.
5. Consider the Type of Accommodation
Jaisalmer offers a variety of accommodation types, each with its own unique charm. Heritage hotels, often housed in centuries-old havelis (mansions), provide a glimpse into the city's rich history and culture. These hotels are typically adorned with intricate carvings, traditional furnishings, and courtyards that transport you back in time. On the other hand, modern hotels and resorts offer contemporary amenities and comforts, making them a great choice for travelers who prefer a more standardized experience. For those seeking a more immersive experience, desert camps are also available, allowing you to sleep under the stars in the heart of the Thar Desert.
6. Book in Advance
Jaisalmer is a popular tourist destination, especially during the winter months when the weather is pleasant. To ensure that you get the best hotel at the best price, it's advisable to book your accommodation well in advance. Early Jaisalmer hotel booking not only guarantees availability but also allows you to take advantage of early bird discounts and special offers. If you're planning to visit during a festival or a special event, such as the Jaisalmer Desert Festival, booking early is even more crucial, as hotels tend to fill up quickly.
7. Verify the Cancellation Policy
Life is unpredictable, and sometimes plans change. Before finalizing your Jaisalmer hotel booking, make sure to read and understand the cancellation policy. Some hotels offer flexible cancellation policies that allow you to cancel or modify your reservation without any penalty, while others may charge a fee. If you're unsure about your travel dates, it's best to choose a hotel with a lenient cancellation policy.
8. Check for Special Offers and Packages
Many hotels in Jaisalmer offer special deals and packages that can help you save money and enhance your stay. These packages may include complimentary meals, spa treatments, guided tours, or discounts on activities like camel safaris and desert camping. Be sure to check the hotel's website or contact them directly to inquire about any ongoing promotions. Additionally, some travel agencies and online booking platforms offer exclusive deals that are worth exploring.
9. Consider the Accessibility
If you're traveling with elderly family members or individuals with mobility issues, it's important to consider the accessibility of the hotel. Some heritage hotels in Jaisalmer may have narrow staircases, uneven floors, or limited elevator access, which could pose challenges for those with limited mobility. When making your Jaisalmer hotel booking, make sure to inquire about the availability of accessible rooms and facilities to ensure a comfortable stay for everyone in your group.
10. Look for Eco-Friendly Options
As travelers become more conscious of their environmental impact, many hotels in Jaisalmer are adopting eco-friendly practices. These hotels may use solar energy, recycle water, and implement waste reduction measures to minimize their carbon footprint. If sustainability is important to you, consider staying at an eco-friendly hotel that aligns with your values. Not only will you be contributing to the preservation of the environment, but you'll also enjoy a unique and responsible travel experience.
11. Communicate with the Hotel
Once you've narrowed down your options, it's a good idea to communicate directly with the hotel to clarify any doubts or special requests you may have. Whether you need a baby crib, have dietary restrictions, or require assistance with transportation, the hotel staff will be happy to assist you. Direct communication also allows you to get a sense of the hotel's customer service and responsiveness, which can be a good indicator of the overall quality of your stay.
12. Plan Your Itinerary Around Your Hotel
Finally, when making a Jaisalmer hotel booking, consider how it fits into your overall travel itinerary. If you're planning to explore the city's main attractions, such as the Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, and Gadisar Lake, choose a hotel that is conveniently located near these sites. On the other hand, if you're looking to spend most of your time in the desert, a hotel that offers easy access to desert camps and safari tours might be more suitable. By aligning your hotel choice with your travel plans, you can maximize your time and make the most of your Jaisalmer experience.
