Pakistani Dishes that Every Foodie Must Try!
Pakistan is known for a lot of things such as cricket, tourism and...food! Yes, Pakistani food is second to none and it’s my belief that once you taste Pakistani food, there is no going back. You become addicted to its rich and flavourful taste. And thus, it should come as no surprise that Pakistanis take their food very seriously. Spice level, presentation and aroma all account when it comes to desi food.
The unfortunate thing about our cuisine is that the dishes require time to prepare. And given how busy our lives are getting day by day, we can just order food online! There is no excuse to miss out of the delicious food items the country has to offer! In fact, there are certain foods that need to be tried by everyone! I’d consider it a crime if you visit or live in Pakistan and don’t try the following:
Halwa Puri
If you have been to Pakistan and haven’t had a halwa puri ka nashta then you have missed out! Sundays are infamous for this breakfast. In fact, most desi families prefer to brunch on Sunday, skip lunch and then have quite a few items at tea time.
Steaming hot puris served with delicious, mouth-watering chollay (chickpeas) and sweet halwa seems like a combo made in heaven. Oh, add a chilled glass of lassi or Karak chai with the mix and you have a winner! This breakfast combo is not only delicious but also pretty eye-catching when it comes to colours. It originates from the province of Punjab but is now enjoyed all across the country.
Chicken Karahi
This dish is a hallmark of Pakistani and Indian cuisine. Originally prepared using goat or lamb meat, this dish has gained popularity because of its spicy taste. Unlike the Indian version of the dish, there are no capsicums or onions here in the dish. Tomatoes are the main focus here and of course spice.
This dish is enriched with spices and is one of those that would leave you wanting more. The flavours of karahi go hand in hand with chicken, give a mouthwatering aroma and look sinfully beautiful. Chicken Karahi is served with chapati or naan and takes around 30 minutes of preparation time. Again, if you are busy just use a food ordering app but don’t miss out of this amazing food!
Sindhi Biryani
Talking about Pakistani food and not mentioning Biryani would be a crime. Despite being a south Asian dish, the popularity Biryani has in Pakistan is unlike any other country, people are crazy about it here! Sindhi biryani especially is one of the most popular types of biryani here. In fact, it is so popular that it is even served on all the flights of Pakistan’s airline- PIA.
As the name implies, this special type of biryani originates from the Sindh province. It is the type of biryani that has potatoes and tomatoes along with meat in rice. The dish is very spicy in nature and makes you want to have one serving after the other. The bay leaves, cardamon, cloves, and other spices, blended together create an aroma that makes Sindhi biryani hard to resist.

Sajji
Originating from the province of Balochistan, this dish is a hit all across Pakistan. You can find lamb or chicken on skewers in every city of Pakistan. The meat is marinated only using salt and often papaya paste is used to reduce the cooking time. The chicken is stuffed with rice and then roasted over coals.
However, if you want to enjoy it with chapati or naan, or a special type of bread ‘kaak’, then you can have that option too. It should be noted as you travel to the different parts of Pakistan, you’ll find different variations of Sajji because the flavouring that the residents of each province enjoy is different. Please note that this is not a home delivery food and can rarely be cooked well at home. It’s one of those food items that best be left to the experts!
Chapli Kabab
Chapli Kabab, otherwise known as Peshawari kabab, are kababs that are made up various spices mixed with minced beef and made in the form of patties. As the name ‘Peshawari kabab’ implies, these kababs originate from the city of Peshawar, KPK.
You’ll be able to find chapli kabab in every food street of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as eastern Afghanistan. It is eaten with chapati, naan, rice or even in the forms of sandwiches and buns. Vendors like to add a piece of boiled egg or tomato to not only make it look very attractive but also to enhance the flavour. All in all, a definite must-try for foodies!
Pakistan has one of the best cuisines in the world. It would be a shame to not have tried at least the above mentioned dishes at least once. If you have foreigner friends, you know what dishes to introduce them to now! Plus, here are the other 15 popular food dishes you can't just ignore!

How Food Delivery Apps Are Revolutionizing the Dining Experience
In today’s fast-paced world, food delivery apps have transformed the way we enjoy our meals. With just a few taps on a smartphone, delicious food can be delivered right to your doorstep. The city of Puri, known for its rich cultural heritage and delectable cuisine, is no exception to this revolution. The emergence of the food delivery app in Puri has made it easier than ever for residents and tourists alike to savor their favorite dishes without stepping out.
Convenience at Your Fingertips
The biggest advantage of food delivery apps is the convenience they offer. Whether you’re at home, at work, or on the beach enjoying the scenic beauty of Puri, you can order food from your favorite restaurants without any hassle. This ease of access has particularly benefited the busy working population and tourists who want to explore local flavors without navigating the city’s bustling streets.
A Diverse Culinary Experience
Puri is a treasure trove of culinary delights, ranging from traditional Odia dishes to global cuisines. A food delivery app in Puri provides a platform for users to explore this diversity. From piping hot Dalma and Chhena Poda to popular street foods and continental meals, these apps bring a variety of options to your fingertips. This accessibility has made it easier for people to try new cuisines and support local eateries.
Supporting Local Businesses
Food delivery apps not only cater to consumers but also empower local restaurants and food vendors. By partnering with these platforms, small eateries and home chefs in Puri gain exposure to a broader audience. This digital presence helps them thrive in a competitive market, ensuring that the local food culture continues to flourish.
Enhancing the Tourist Experience
For tourists visiting Puri, food delivery apps have become an indispensable tool. They can sample authentic Odia cuisine without worrying about language barriers or unfamiliar locations. Additionally, the convenience of ordering food online allows them to focus on enjoying the city’s attractions, such as the Jagannath Temple and Puri Beach.
The Future of Dining in Puri
As technology continues to evolve, the role of food delivery apps will only grow stronger. Features like real-time tracking, cashless payments, and personalized recommendations make these platforms indispensable. In Puri, where tradition meets modernity, food delivery apps are bridging the gap between cultural heritage and contemporary lifestyles, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a seamless dining experience.
The food delivery app in Puri is more than just a service; it’s a gateway to convenience, variety, and culinary exploration, revolutionizing the way people dine in this vibrant city.

Life Out of the ‘Idiot’ box – Part II
Old Television Set
Boxed up society
‘Ramayan’ and ‘Mahabharat’ on television changed our Sunday mornings forever. Not only ours, of the entire country. In my childhood Sundays used to be feast day at home - a heavy breakfast of Luchi (Puri), alur dum (a potato preparation) and hot Jalebies ( a crispy, crunchy, Indian sweet) would be followed by a sumptuous lunch of mutton and Pulao. Mother would almost literally become Dashabhuja (ten-handed) Durga Maa that day and would make Malpua, Suji ka halwa or some other interesting snacks in the evening. Ours was a small township. There were not many restaurants, cafes and food trucks. Eating outside was not so common like today. If not feast at home, it would be a day-out at relatives’ places. The day would be spent at their place, playing with the cousins. When the television shows like Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and B.R.Chopra’s Mahabharat started showing on Sunday mornings, things changed forever.
Ramayan
In every household, the men would finish weekly grocery and food stock shopping early in the Sunday mornings. There were no malls or supermarkets those days, no home deliveries from local ‘kirana dukaan’ over phone. Neither there were apps to buy grocery, vegetable or fish and chicken online. Hence, my father would also hurriedly go to the market as early as 6.30 in the morning so that he didn’t miss the best portions of the goat meat to the other mutton lovers! Mother would wrap up elaborate Sunday breakfast in a fizzy to tune into the epics’ televised versions at 9 am, religiously. The roads would take a deserted look as if curfew had been imposed. Everything would come to a stand still until the shows would get over by 11 in the morning. The entire locality would reverberate with the baritone recitation by Harish Bhimani preceded by the conch shell blowing and the opening song “Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya” by Mahendra Kapoor.
Mahabharat
Every weekend evening we also got to treat ourselves to two movie shows on Doordarshan and later DD Metro. Our occasional weekend day-spending visits to relatives’ houses and casual evening visits to family friends’ and neighbors’ houses gradually reduced and then totally stopped. Even if we happened to pay such casual visits out of old habit, we would find everybody glued to the TV sets, generally kept in the living rooms; we would realize that we had intruded into their TV time; that we were not very welcome as there would be hardly any conversation as long as the programmes were on. If we still stuck around shamelessly, the master and the mistress of the house would exchange their frustration at our shamelessness through a silent, not so subtle eye contact among themselves. Then the mistress of the house would ask us what we would like to have in a tone which had the unsaid yet quite clear message hinting us not to expect anything and better leave. Little generous and kinder hosts would serve tea and not so interesting snacks such as Thin Arrowroot biscuit, unwillingly.
Illustration: Arjun Jadhav
People started planning their evenings and other activities, even visits to the doctor’s clinic, except emergency, according to the schedules of their favorite TV shows. They were not ready to miss them at any cost. Even full time domestic helps or day long house maids would demand to know if the employer had a television set or not before taking up the job.
Our life became more interesting in our own living rooms as we started looking forward to these programs, talked about them, the characters, speculated about the next episodes. Old ways of socializing took a back seat.
