A 53,000-acre Queensland farm has again chosen Horsch Sprinter seeders overall competition.
Coggan Farms is a family-owned fifth generation farming operation at Meandarra on Queensland’s Western Downs.
The farm’s undulating terrain has mostly brigalow belah soils, firm to hard-setting with a clay loam surface and medium to heavy clay subsoils. Plant available water capacity ranges from 100-200mm.
Production includes Angus and Speckle Park beef breeders, Dorper-Meatmaster cross sheep, a Meatmaster stud, a feedlot, grazing, and irrigated and dryland cropping.
30,000 acres are given over to forage sorghum, lablab, grain sorghum and irrigated corn in the summer, with barley, wheat, chickpeas, triticale and vetch in winter. Approximately 50 percent of crop produced is used as fodder on-farm.
Philip Coggan, Manager and part-owner, said he traded up on a 12-metre Horsch Sprinter and took delivery of two new Horsch Sprinter 18NT seeders in March 2021.
“The 12-metre Sprinter had done 18,000 acres for us. It was the simplest seeder we’ve ever used and worked very well, but we didn’t go into our next buying decision with eyes closed.
“My son Tom and I researched the latest seeding technologies from various brands. We knew what was available and Sprinters were the best choice,” he said.
The Horsch Sprinter NT has narrow fold design, rotational folding seed towers, a floating drawbar hitch, excellent ground following ability with instant terrain response, simplified integrated hydraulics and one-metre underframe vertical clearance.
Precision alignment of the packing system to the openers provides optimal seed to soil contact. Individual depth control on each tine guarantees accuracy.

“It’s very manoeuvrable in the paddocks and folds up well for road transport and shed storage.
“It’s simple to calibrate and setting the coulter depth is very quick. “It’s great to be able to set tine down pressure from the cab with the touch of a button. We can have five different soil types across one paddock and we can easily increase pressure on the run.
“We sowed into 6-tonne per hectare barley stubble travelling at about 8.5kmph and got uniform, quick emergence. The Sprinter does a great job even in soft ground, which is another reason I love them,” he said.
The Coggans chose 17,000-litre aircarts and set them up with single shoot 10,000-litre liquid fertiliser systems, which means the whole 17,000-litre cart is full of seed.
“It takes us less than 10 minutes to fill the seed cart,” Philip said, “and we can go for more than 15 hours before we need to refill. It’s unbelievable efficiency.”
“The Sprinter’s so easy, safe and efficient to use. You just turn the monitor on and away it goes, doing everything you want it to do,” Philip said.

I Am the Kind of Person Who Finds Herself on a Stranger’s Farm in the Middle of the Night
The first time I was exposed to farming issues was when a friend showed me some films of cows being slaughtered. We were teenagers, and it was just gross-out shit, like those “Faces of Death” videos. He wasn’t a vegetarian — no one was vegetarian — and he wasn’t trying to make me one. It was for a laugh.
We had drumsticks for dinner that night, and I couldn’t eat mine. When I held the bone in my hand, it didn’t feel like chicken, but a chicken. I always knew I was eating an individual, I suppose, but it never hit me before. My dad asked me what was wrong, and I told him about the video. At that point in my life, I took whatever he said to be the truth, and I was sure he could explain everything. But the best he could come up with was something like “It’s unpleasant stuff.” If he’d left it there, I probably wouldn’t be talking to you now. But then he made a joke about it. The same joke everyone makes. I’ve heard it a million times since. He pretended he was a crying animal. It was revealing to me, and infuriating. I decided then and there never to become someone who told jokes when explanations were impossible.
I wanted to know if that video was exceptional. I suppose I wanted a way out of having to change my life. So I wrote letters to all of the big farm corporations, asking for tours. Honestly, it never crossed my mind that they would say no or not respond. When that didn’t work, I started driving around and asking any farmers I saw if I could look in their sheds. They all had reasons for saying no. Given what they’re doing, I don’t blame them for not wanting anyone to see. But given their secrecy about something so important, who could blame me for feeling that I needed to do things my own way?
The first farm I entered at night was an egg facility, maybe a million hens. They were packed into cages that were stacked several rows high. My eyes and lungs burned for days after. It was less violent and gory than what I’d seen in the video, but it affected me even more strongly. That really changed me, when I realized that an excruciating life is worse than an excruciating death.
The farm was so bad that I assumed it, too, had to be exceptional. I guess I couldn’t believe that people would let that kind of thing happen on so large a scale. So I got myself into another farm, a turkey farm. By chance I’d come just a few days before slaughter, so the turkeys were full grown and jammed body to body. You couldn’t see the floor through them. They were totally crazy: flapping, squawking, going after each other. There were dead birds everywhere, and half-dead birds. It was sad. I didn’t put them there, but I felt ashamed just to be a person. I told myself it had to be exceptional. So I entered another farm. And another. And another.
Maybe on some deep level, I kept doing this because I didn’t want to believe that the things I’d seen were representative. But everyone who cares to know about this stuff knows that factory farms are nearly all there is. Most people aren’t able to see these farms with their own eyes, but they can see them through mine. I’ve videotaped conditions at chicken and egg factories, turkey factories, a couple of hog farms (those are basically impossible to get into now), rabbit farms, drylot dairies and feedlots, livestock auctions, and in transport trucks. I’ve worked in a few slaughterhouses. Occasionally the footage will make its way onto the evening news or into the newspaper. A few times it’s been used in animal cruelty court cases.
These factory farmers calculate how close to death they can keep the animals without killing them. That’s the business model. How quickly can they be made to grow, how tightly can they be packed, how much or little can they eat, how sick can they get without dying.
This isn’t animal experimentation, where you can imagine some proportionate good at the other end of the suffering. This is what we feel like eating. Tell me something: Why is taste, the crudest of our senses, exempted from the ethical rules that govern our other senses? If you stop and think about it, it’s crazy. Why doesn’t a horny person have as strong a claim to raping an animal as a hungry one does to killing and eating it? It’s easy to dismiss that question but hard to respond to it. And how would you judge an artist who mutilated animals in a gallery because it was visually arresting? How riveting would the sound of a tortured animal need to be to make you want to hear it that badly? Try to imagine any end other than taste for which it would be justifiable to do what we do to farmed animals.
If I misuse a corporation’s logo, I could potentially be put in jail; if a corporation abuses a billion birds, the law will protect not the birds, but the corporation’s right to do what it wants. That is what it looks like when you deny animals rights. It’s crazy that the idea of animal rights seems crazy to anyone. We live in a world in which it’s conventional to treat an animal like a hunk of wood and extreme to treat an animal like an animal.
Before child labor laws, there were businesses that treated their ten-year-old employees well. Society didn’t ban child labor because it’s impossible to imagine children working in a good environment, but because when you give that much power to businesses over powerless individuals, it’s corrupting. When we walk around thinking we have a greater right to eat an animal than the animal has a right to live without suffering, it’s corrupting. I’m not speculating. This is our reality. Look at what factory farming is. Look at what we as a society have done to animals as soon as we had the technological power. Look at what we actually do in the name of “animal welfare” and “humaneness,” then decide if you still believe in eating meat.

How to Create a Cattle Pasture for Optimum Flavor and Fat Cover in Grass-fed Beef
With Spencer Smith – Creating the right blend of forages and grasses in a pasture to finish (fatten for slaughter) cattle is not as simple as turning the cattle out to grass. It requires timing the “finishing season” for maximum flavor and health benefits. Everything the animal eats will impact the flavor of the meat. The plants the animal eats will impact flavor differently depending on the age of the plant. Is it a young, new grass? Is it old and lignified? Once this delicate balance of plant type and age is figured out, and can consistently produce high-quality beef, word will spread about the flavor of the grass-fed beef.
Grass-fed beef and grass finished are sometimes used interchangeably as terms to describe cattle who only ate grass their whole lives. To finish cattle means to grow them to a certain age and fat cover to be ready to slaughter. A grass-finished product means that the animal ate only grass their whole lives. Grass-fed generally means this too, but some companies are advertising grass-fed beef when really the animal was fed grass most of their lives but supplemented with corn or other high-concentrate feeds at the end of their life. When purchasing grass-fed beef, it is important to ask about the finishing process to understand the health benefits, environmental impact and other factors that are important to most consumers.

Dr. Jason Rowntree, an Associate Professor of Animal Science at Michigan State University and a Savory Global Network Hub leader, explains that the most critical factor in finishing grass-fed beef for flavor and health is getting enough fat cover on the animal leading up to slaughter.
“Energy intake during the last 60 days of finishing and adequate subcutaneous fat at slaughter are two important factors. First, we want to see steers gaining a minimum of two pounds per day (even better three pounds average daily gain) in the last 60 days of finishing. This ensures an increasing plane of weight gain and hopefully a more marbled carcass. Our steers average around 1250 pounds with a 650-pound carcass.”

The health benefits of grass-fed beef are in the fat. In a truly grass-finished animal, the fat is a super food. This is due to the proper ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and other vital fatty acids present in grass-fed beef fat. In a conventionally finished, or high-energy concentrate finished animal (fed grain or corn), it is full of pro-inflammatory fatty acids. It is very high in omega-6 fatty acids. The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids is unbalanced in grain-finished beef.
Why Some Grass-Fed Beef Tastes “Gamey”
Common complaints of grass-finished beef are that it has a gamey flavor, is tough and dry. Just as important as selecting the best cattle breeds for grass-fed beef for the local environment, also select for the best grass to finish cattle. Time the grazing so that optimum fat and flavor can be part of the beef product. The benefit of finishing on pasture applies to other species. Monogastric animals, such as hogs, produce a superior tasting flavor when the hogs are pastured. Raising pigs on pasture can create a superior flavor in the meat. The focus of this post is finishing ruminants, such as cattle, on pasture.
“My opinion is that a majority of the off flavors found in grass-fed beef is a result of not having a minimum of 3/10ths of an inch of fat at the last rib on the carcass as they go from slaughter into chill. Having carcasses the are too trim leads to cooler shrink and cold shortening. The carcasses do not have enough fat to protect against drying out. Likewise, if the carcass is chilled too quickly, muscle fibers seize up causing toughness among other issues,” said Dr. Rowntree.
“Ensure the cattle are smooth looking at slaughter, have adequate fat deposited in the brisket, cod and tail head and are properly handled, slaughtered and chilled,” he said.
“Gameyness” of the beef can be prevented. It is caused by the age of the plants the animal eats. A forage ration that is too young and lush (higher in protein and lower in total carbohydrates) or that is too old and declining in “total digestible nutrients” or TDN’s will create gaminess in grass finished beef.
The flavor of grass-fed beef is influenced by how it cooks. Joe and Teri Bertotti own and operate Hole-In-One Ranch with their family in Janesville, California. They produce grass-fed beef and lamb for customers in Northern California and Nevada.
“People generally don’t recognize that grass fed beef needs to be cooked a certain way. “Low and slow” is out motto. Grain-fed beef can be seared and cooked at a moderately high temperature and the meat turns out fine. With grass fed, that technique almost always results in a meal that is unsatisfactory. We realized early on that if we want to reach more customers, we need to be sure the customers we have are enjoying our product and that starts with them knowing or learning how to best prepare it,” Joe Bertotti said.
The Age of Plants Influences the Flavor of Beef
Fattening on cattle pastures takes the same principle as grain finishers in the feedlots: more carbohydrates/energy in the cattle’s diet allows them to put on enough fat to actually finish. Protein builds muscle and frame, while carbs increase fat deposits. This principle is the same when finishing on cattle pastures. When finishing on forage, make sure that the animals get enough energy (carbs) compared to protein.
Chad Lemke, Production Manager for Grassfed Livestock Alliance, director of the Savory Global Network Hub called Grassfed Sustainability Group, and a grass-fed beef producer in Central Texas, said, that grass-finished cattle need a diverse diet. Age of the animal matters too. It matters a lot.
“Animals must have sufficient age in order to produce a well-marbled carcass with adequate back fat. Most bad grass-fed beef eating experiences are due to the fact that an animal is not truly finished. As with the human diet, animals must have high quality, nutritious and a diverse offering of forage including grasses, legumes, and forbs,” Lemke said.
The genetics of cattle influence their ability to gain enough fat to finish on grass.
“One of the biggest mistakes producers make is believing that any animal can be forage finished on any forage in the cattle pasture,” Lemke said.
The time to start fattening genetically appropriate cattle is when forages are starting to move more carbs/energy up into the leaves rather than growing more leaf. When grasses are lush, dark green and growing fast, the plant is higher in protein. A cattle pasture with high-protein plants will add frame and muscle on calves, but it will not get them to a finished body condition. This is a common problem for grass finishers as they will allow their cattle to re-graze plants as the plants re-grow leaves. Instead, get a cattle pasture that is at maximum forage growth, but prior to “heading out,” which means the plants are creating a seed head. This timing will ensure the proper balance for a fat-packing diet. By concentrating on TDNs and the best time for grazing, the cattle pasture will maximize the fat on the calves’ back.

“Not having enough high-quality forage to ensure a two-pound average daily gain going into slaughter is a common mistake. The cattle are not appreciating in weight gain, and at proper carcass maturity, do not have enough marbling to ensure a quality tasting product,” said Dr. Rowntree.
Another way that producers can manage for the best tasting product is selecting what forage mixes the cattle will have access to during the last few weeks of their life. Different climates and environments support different native grasses in the cattle pasture, thus finishing times vary throughout the country and the world. Some climates require providing structures such as cattle sheds. Design cattle production cycles: calving times, weaning times, finishing times to complement the grass production cycle. Some ranchers plant a pasture of annual plants for finishing cattle. This is effective because annual crops such as wheat, rye, and oats can be planted early in the year. They provide ample energy to the grazing animal as soon as the fourth leaf is mature. Later in the year, if cattle are finishing in the height of summer, consider planting warm season annuals such as grazing corn, sorghum, sudangrass or legumes that will maintain throughout the summer heat. Another option is feeding stockpiled feed such as high-quality hay or haylage.
Monitor how well the stock is metabolizing feed. This can be checked (not scientifically) by learning to read manure in the cattle pasture. Cattle eating a balanced ration that their stomach biology is adapted to will produce manure that is moist and well-digested. Look for round patties with hollowed out centers. If they manure is loose and runny, then the cattle are getting too much protein in their diet. This can be corrected with supplementing high-energy hay. If the manure is blocky and hard, carbohydrates in the diet are too high. Adjust the diet by supplementing with high-protein feed, such as alfalfa hay. Manure indicates how cattle are gaining and if they are utilizing all forage. Manure texture can also indicate beef flavor. If it is runny (protein is too high) the beef will tend to be gamier in flavor. If it is too hard and clumpy, cattle are losing condition and the harvested meat from these animals will tend to be tougher. Using a round pen would be best for short-term holding areas or quarantine.

I think it is important to note that not all cows feel the need to go into shelter areas at all. We would put food under the shelter and the cows would sometimes still stand in the field, eating what was there while snow piled up around them. Sometimes a small grove of trees is enough shelter for the cattle. Whether the cattle need shelter in your area or not, I still feel it is best to provide some sort of shed or protection from the weather. You may not be able to make them use it but if the cows feel it is necessary, they will seek shelter.
Waste Management
This is a big deal on a smaller homestead. If spreading manure in the fallow fields to add nutrients is not an option, what are you going to do with all that manure? If you let it sit in the field, the cows will eventually have nowhere to graze. It is pretty amazing how fast the stuff piles up. Having a manure management plan in place will avoid this becoming a nightmare situation. If you are raising a few head of cattle on two fenced pastures, partially cleaning one while the other is being used might be an option. Just remember that you need to keep up with it because the cows are each producing fifty pounds of manure a day. Leaving the manure in the field will help fertilize the grazing land, but in the meantime, the cows won’t eat where they have deposited a pile of manure. This is definitely something to think about if you are raising a few head of cattle on a homestead instead of a large ranch.
It is very possible to start from scratch, learn cattle shed design, DIY fence installation and make water available. As with any livestock raising decision, have the facility set up first, before the cows come home. The hard work that goes into raising beef cattle on a small farm is very rewarding. Hair Sheep Breeds – The Right Choice for You?
Hair sheep breeds are growing in popularity as consumers look for economical ways to raise homestead meat animals. Hair breeds have many positive traits that make them an ideal animal for small farms, homesteads, and of course, larger commercial farms. If you have space to corral a few sheep, you can fill the freezer with a healthy alternative to beef and chicken.
History tells us our present-day sheep are derived from the wild Mouflon sheep, among others, that grew coarse hair with a downy undercoat. (Icelandic sheep grow a double coat.) As wild sheep were domesticated, breeding for increased wool came into practice.
Ten percent of sheep breeds are hair breeds but ninety percent of these, are found in tropical areas. Hair sheep breeds such as the Barbados Blackbelly and St.Croix are largely found in these tropical areas of the world. Since these breeds are so adaptable, when found in colder climates, the hair sheep adapt by growing a thicker undercoat.

Why Own Hair Sheep
There are three main reasons to raise hair sheep.
Lack of wool.
Resistance to disease and parasites.
A high rate of reproduction.
No wool to deal with makes perfect economic sense. When you’re raising sheep for meat, the wool is a by-product. You have to pay to have it sheared once a year. When the price of raw wool fleece is below the cost of shearing the animal, this is not cost effective. Hair sheep breeds simply shed their hair covering and fleecy undercoat when the weather warms.
Since today’s hair sheep breeds are developed from hardy ancestors, they are considered easy keepers because they have a natural resistance to disease and parasites. They also do well eating the vegetation that other species reject. Feed conversion is good since these sheep fatten easily on less than ideal pasture and forage. Feeding these breeds too much grain can result in an overabundance of internal fat.

In many cases, farmers are adding hair sheep to pastures with cattle to maximize efficiency and for parasite control. Sheep and cattle have different grazing needs and preferences, and the sheep will clean up the growth that doesn’t appeal to the cows.
Unlike meat goats, hair sheep are resistant to many of the parasites shed by cattle. They require less worming medications as a general rule. Quite a few meat producers are finding better success with the hair breeds of meat sheep than with meat goats.
An interesting study was done that showed the parasite resistance was higher in the purebred hair sheep over the crossbred shedding sheep. No difference was noted between the purebred breeds of hair sheep. The Katahdins in the study had a consistently less barber pole worm infestation rate compared to the Dorper and Dorset crosses. In addition, there is almost no incidence of flystrike with hair sheep breeds.
The reproductive rate of true hair sheep is excellent. Twinning is common and triplets and quadruplets are not rare. The hair sheep breeds lamb easily in the pasture and the lambs gain weight rapidly and develop to maturity quickly. A caution when breeding is to choose the right size ram for the ewe. Some hair breed rams are long-bodied which can create a lengthy birthing scenario for the ewe. Choosing breeding stock with this in mind can avoid this problem.
Some breeders have been working on crosses between traditional wool meat breeds and hair sheep breeds. The Dorper is a good example of this interbreeding. The Dorper grows more wool but self-sheds annually. Some are calling these shedding sheep.
A Growing Commodity
Sales of sheep meat and sheep breeding stock are on the rise in the United States and Canada. There is a growing market demand for high-quality, naturally-fed lamb. While hair breeds comprise a small percentage of the number of sheep in North America, this is changing as sustainability becomes a bigger issue for landowners. They are best raised on pasture and finishing these breeds on feedlots can lead to less desirable meat products as the ethnic market prefers a leaner lamb.
Fine Quality Leather from Hair Sheep Breeds
Another good product from hair sheep is leather. The leather from hair sheep grain is finer than the leather from wool breeds and brings in a larger amount of money.
Breeds of True Hair Sheep
Barbados Blackbelly
Arguments exist concerning the exact origin of the Barbados Blackbelly — evidence is shown for both Africa or Barbados. Four Barbados Blackbelly sheep arrived in the United States in 1904. Future importations to university breeding flocks led to the development of the American Blackbelly sheep breed. This ancient breed has thrived in warm climates, continued to produce twins and good carcass weights.
St.Croix
The St. Croix breed is descended from the original West African hair sheep although some believe they are a cross breed of Criollo and Wiltshire White sheep. With a high rate of multiple births and a gentle temperament, this is a good choice for people looking to start a hair sheep business, particularly in warm climates.
Blackhead Persian
Very tolerant of the humid hot conditions in the Carribean and Somolia, Blackhead Persians have a white body and black head. They also have a fat rump, short legs, and a compact body. The lambing rate is not as high as other hair breeds.

Katahdin
The Katahdin breed was developed in the United States by Michael Piel. Beginning in the mid-1950s, Piel imported three St.Croix sheep. They were called Africans at the time. He experimented with breeding them to meat breeds, finally reaching a point, in the 1970s, where he named the breed, Katahdins after a nearby mountain in his home state of Maine. Unfortunately, Mr. Piel did not live long enough to see his breed reach having a registry and breed standards. Katahdins are medium size, hardy, low-maintenance, and have a high-quality carcass weight.

Dorper
The Dorper is a mutton breed of hair sheep developed in the 1930s. The breed was created by crossing Dorset and Blackheaded Persian sheep. The Dorper has a high rate of lambing and is tolerant of the arid conditions it was developed for in South Africa.
Royal White (Dorper x St.Croix)
St. Croix Sheep have been used to develop other breeds such as the Royal White. Crossing with the Dorper led to this larger hair breed. Royal Whites are more recent in the hair sheep scene and development is still ongoing.

As hair sheep breeds become more popular, it will be important for breeders to ensure the future integrity of the breeds.
