TK might be short in stature but he is huge in personality. Fiercely competitive on and off the track, he is also friends with just about everyone. He’s like a favorite crazy uncle, a mischievous prankster yet willing to dispense the wisdom gathered from decades of racing to anyone who needs it. More fit than men more than half his age, he is an avid sportsman, competing in Ironman competitions, marathons and biking competitions. (Don’t touch his bike. Ever. Ask Dario about that.) He also is a big Sim racer, with his own line of Sim rigs, and a ‘hidden’ lair in his house containing two top of the line rigs.
A member of the Indycar ‘Brat pack’ of the late 1990’s. Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti, Max Papis and Greg Moore. Their off track antics were legendary as were their results on the track. TK is the last of that group still racing, with Greg Moore lost in 1999, and Dario and Max long since retired. The 2023 Indy 500 is his last ride.
TK and Dario went on to form a new pack of sorts with Bryan Herta, Scott Dixon, and Dan Wheldon, later adding Marco Andretti as a sort of little brother.

Hello chibimyumi! I've been a fan of black butler for a few years now, and I really want to get into the plays. The thing is, I'm a moron who has no idea where to start. Do you have any tips for how beginners like me can get into them? Thank you!
Hello Anon!
Well, asking me is asking for bias since I am a blog literally started because of the Furukawa era Kuromyus, so........I recommend you start with the Furukawa era Kuromyus (≽▽≼;;)Before the Furukawa era was the Matsushita Era.
Okay okay... I’ll try to be a bit more nuanced.
Reasons to start with Furukawa Era:
All stories are canon except a few minor changes for adaptation’s sake.
Furukawa’s Sebastian was declared above canon by Yana herself, and Editor Kuma can’t shut up about how much of a fanboy he is of Furukawa ever since.
The Ciels in these musicals are genuinely good child actors.
From 2016 on, TOHO (the most prestigious JP theatre that owns the literal Imperial Theatre aids them, so the quality is off the chart.
That is not to say that it’s wrong to watch any Matsushita era musicals though! It’s just that I personally don’t recommend it, the 2009, 2010 musical DVDs are out of production, so you’d have to start with 2013 and 2014.
Reasons to start with Matsushita Era:
You want to see the history of Kuromyu, where it all began.
You are a fan of Matsushita Yuya or other actors that only appear in those musicals.
You like BL-like shipping fanfics a lot, and the 2013 musical would be a feast then (though it’s full of canon-contradictions, plot-holes and homo- and transphobia, so you’ll have to be able to overlook that.)
Furukawa Era Kuromyu Menu
The Furukawa era Kuromyus come in three musicals chronologically.
The Lycoris that Blazes the Earth 2015
NOAH’S ARK CIRCUS 2016
Tango on the Campania 2018
The Lycoris that Blazes the Earth is the stage adaptation of the Jack the Ripper arc, while the other two’s titles speak for themselves.
General Recommendation
If you are familiar with the manga itself already, there is no need to watch the Furukawa era kuromyus chronologically; I’d say, just start with your favourite arc among the three. I offer high quality English subtitles in exchange for proof of legal ownership of the DVD. This is my initiative to combat pirating of Japanese stage productions, because Japanese stage actors only get paid for their rehearsal labour depending on the DVD sales. That is why every time anybody asks me: “where can I watch Kuromyu” I’ll answer: “anywhere where your disc player and screen are.”
As the DVDs are quite expensive for universal standards, I recommend watching the PVs first.
Official PV Lycoris that Blazes the Earth 2015.
youtube
⏫Pros to starting with Lycoris:
It’s the first Furukawa Sebastian, and you can see where he started.
At this stage Furukawa was declared ‘canon’ (not ‘above-canon’ yet). To Yana this was the first time she ever saw somebody doing her baby Sebastian justice.
Madam Red is simply AMAZING, you can’t miss that.
This was the first time - on Yana’s instructions - that Grell is officially portrayed as a transgender woman rather than a “gay-transvestite-laughing-stock”.
⏬Cons to starting with Lycoris:
The over-all quality is not as high as the following two (because TOHO didn’t step in yet), but it’s still above average for 2.5D. It’s NOT not your money’s worth, but it’s not ridiculously good either. It’s just that it’s not representative of the later two musicals’ quality. Many people who first and only watched 2015 said they hated Kuromyu, but then when they watched the later two they said: “wow amazing!”
Some songs are just...jarringly bad...
Official dress rehearsal NOAH’s ARK CIRCUS.
youtube
⏫Pros to starting with Circus:
Here Furukawa was declared ‘above-canon’ by Yana herself.
Furukawa really has grown as Sebas, and it’s clear as day.
Ciel is ridiculous. He’s played by the unanimously agreed-upon best so far, Uchikawa Reo.
TOHO steps in for the first time, and their influence is apparent.
Most of the music is a blast.
Joker... OH JOKER....!!!! He’s even better than the manga. 10/10
Baron Kelvin, also even better than the manga. 10/10
There are actual circus-worthy performances
Dagger is played by 2016 actual world champion uni-cyclist Mitsuya Ryo.
Doll is absolutely heart-wrenchingly adorable.
⏬Cons to starting with Lycoris:
It is not chronological to the Furukawa Era Kuromyu.
It mightttt set your expectations for others a bit too high to start here.
DVD PV of Tango on the Campania.
youtube
⏫Pros to starting with Campania:
Here Furukawa rendered Yana and Editor Kuma speechless.
Young Uchikawa Reo polished his singing for Ciel, and now everything is perfect about him.
Furukawa and Uchikawa’s friendship which they built in 2016 really shows here.
TOHO turned their support up to 11.
The ensemble members (the zombies) are as much the stars as Sebas and Ciel are. They are mind-blowing.
Most (but not all) consider these songs the best.
Best directing so far (by the esteemed ex-Takarazuka director Kodama Akiko).
A portrayal of Grell as a competent transgender reaper asked requested by Yana herself. Yana admitted she did Grell wrong, and asked Uehara to do Grell justice in her stead.
⏬Cons to starting with Campania:
It is not chronological to the Furukawa Era Kuromyu.
It WILL set your expectations for others a bit too high to start here.
I hope this helps! After you watch the PVs and do decide to buy the DVDs and get the English subs from me, do let me know!

@mmmmalo replied to your post “The National Youth Rights Association is seeking input on its goals...”:
Never heard this argument for reducing reliance on cars, but I like it!
Cars are really bad! I’ve been opposed to cars on children’s-rights grounds for a while, but there are many, many different arguments for cars being awful.
Most straightforwardly, cars kill a lot of people. About 1.35 million people die in traffic accidents every year, and almost half of them are pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. In the United States, as best I can tell, about three-and-half times as many people are killed in traffic accidents as murdered with guns (37,806 traffic-accident deaths versus 11,004 firearm homicides in 2016).
The transportation sector also accounts for a substantial chunk of greenhouse-gas emissions: 29% as of 2017, with more than half of transportation emissions coming from normal, everyday, light-duty automobiles.
Finally, cars are inefficient; they’re big and clunky, and they eat up a lot of land compared to the alternatives. While I haven’t researched this too deeply on my own, it seems intuitive that inefficient use of land artificially drives up the cost of urban housing by constraining its supply. This contributes to urban sprawl, which, in turn, contributes to more car ownership. (The EPA lists sprawl as one reason car ownership has increased over the last three decades.)
None of this is to say that people who drive cars today are doing anything wrong. Our whole society is built around car ownership; depending on where you live, going car-free can be inconvenient or just plain impossible. But I think we should transition as fast as possible to a world without cars—ideally with buyback programs to keep from bankrupting poor car owners.
#this is perhaps more detailed a response than you were looking for#but i realized i hadn't said any of this on my blog and wanted to#mmmmalo#land use#climate change#hashtag ban cars

The Race Across America is considered to be the toughest ultra cycling race in the world. The riders need to ride from the American west coast to the east coast, which equals a total distance of 3070 miles, or nearly 5000 kilometers. The best riders do it in less than 10 days. In 2016, one of the best ultra cyclists in Europe, Luxembourgish rider Ralph Diseviscourt, finished just above 10 days in fourth place. Two years later, in 2018, he tried it again. "Thirty Seventy - 3070 Miles Across America" is a documentary film that provides impressions of the the United States' nature and landscapes across the journey from one coast to the other, as well as exclusive inside looks into the daily work of the rider and its crew.

Smart City Infrastructure
A smart city is a variety of things and has a working definition especially as society becomes more dependent on technology, and as the limits of what technology can do is pushed. My definition is a city that has an emphasis on creating the best quality of life for its members through a well-connected highway of IT, business, and social infrastructure. Having the main focus between these connections be to bring new technologies into different aspects of business, and making it socially applicable for all socioeconomic classes. A smart city should not be for one “type” of person, but be able to morph into something for everyone. I believe that people should have certain aspects of a smart city that they can accept or decline based on their values, so it is not something that everyone has to participate in because everyone has different values that are all important to respect. In order to merge smart cities in business, they will have to start adding some goals which have an emphasis on some form of sustainable technology.
In order to understand what smart infrastructure is, it is important to know what infrastructure is. Infrastructure is the backbone, fundamental structures, and facilities of a city. It is the roads, buildings, power supplies that are all needed in order to successfully run a community. In recent years they have started to make “smart infrastructure” which according to the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction they define it as, “sensing technologies embedded in infrastructure...The information gathered is analyzed, interpreted and delivered as reliable, robust and meaningful information.” The importance of this definition is that it covers exactly the purpose of smart infrastructure. Overall, the goal is to advance the infrastructure that is already there, cities are not trying to completely remodel their cities because that is not realistic, but they can make updates and advancements which is what they are doing. The most common forms of smart infrastructure come from putting sensors in the roads that will connect with stoplights in order to speed congestion, and for the roads and lights to have an understanding of when they need to be changing so traffic can lessen. A lot of the smart infrastructure comes from implementing different technologies to help generate data for cities to learn and develop where their issues lie and what they can do to change and become more efficient and environmentally friendly.
Due to every city having a different design their projects that they are working on are specific for their city but can be adapted to fit more. One project that I looked at was the Smart Public Lighting in the municipality of Renkum, where they focused on the light posts around the city. The goal of the project is to dim and monitor street lights remotely to minimize energy being used, but still having public light available to the members in the community. This was tested in the city of Hengelo in the Netherlands because they wanted to reduce energy use while maintaining safety on the streets, so they implemented 627 street lights with OLC300 which was able to manage the light and reduce the energy being used. The photo above shows what the light posts look like, you can tell they are different than traditional light posts in order for them to be able to dim late at night. In the future, they want to try to implement wifi in these and keep replacing/ implementing these light posts into the rest of the city. Personally, I enjoyed learning about this problem and solution because I thought that it was a problem that is not typically talked about and often overlooked, but the energy that is expended from street lights is immense, and these lights could go a long way in helping reduce the energy used. In Madrid, they went back to their roots through an eight-year project to change a highway to go through the center of the city and building bridges over their main river, Madrid Rio. They focused on making this infrastructure a place where people can come, hang out and take in the beauty around them while not being bothered by all the city chaos. In moving the major highway they were able to make room for 1,000 underground parking spots. By moving this infrastructure the city of Madrid was able to plant trees and bring some more green space back into the city. Something else that the city of Madrid focused on was creating bridges. Utilizing bridges is essential because it helps create extra space within a city, it allows the city to still have the beauty of the river but also makes it still well connected between the two sides of the city. The image to the left shows how the city was able to utilize a bridge while still maintaining a connection to the city and having the green space it needs, as well as having space for the community to feel connected to the environment and green space. Learning about this project was extremely interesting because they were not as focused on technology, but ultimately everything they worked on is considered technology, just not the type that we typically think of. However, the idea to move a major highway and build it into a bridge to make green space, plant trees, and make a connecting, safe area for pedestrians is so unique and should be implemented into more cities. Something that is a little closer is in Boston they are doing all kinds of projects in order to make it more of a smart city in all aspects. A big movement they are working on is to gather information at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Beacon street by implementing sensors under the road and video cameras to collect their data. They are looking for, “how vehicles and cyclists move during the green, yellow, and red lights, yielding to pedestrians, pedestrians crossing while the light says walk versus stop, etc” (City of Boston). It is unique that Boston is putting a similar amount of emphasis on biking as they are on cars because most initiatives talk about becoming more green, but focus their roads mostly on cars, but with Boston, you can tell there is a big initiative to look into bike and car data. The hopes of changing the infrastructure to collect this data are to see if there is a need to implement or change any traffic rules, learn ways to make streets or sidewalks more user-friendly, and get a greater overall understanding of how the public is connected with the current infrastructure. I think that this is a unique project especially because they are going to have a website that will have all the data they are receiving, they are being very transparent throughout their whole process which is unique and personally I like it because it shows that they are not hiding anything. Just by looking at these three smart infrastructures I realize how much can be done within a city, and how unique each city can be. Hengelo, Madrid, and Boston could each look at each other’s city to learn what has been done and what works well to possibly implement into their own as each city becomes smarter.

17 terrifying creepypastas guaranteed to keep you up at night
The age-old tradition of telling ghost stories around a campfire has gotten a digital upgrade with creepypastas — scary stories or pictures that spread across message boards, becoming internet lore that are discussed both on and offline.
People around the word share their bizarre and terrifying creepypastas, hoping that the tales will gain popularity and become classics, often quoted or cited by horror fans and frightened netizens.
Like with the ghost stories of old, not all creepypastas are particularly scary or good, even if they are frequently passed around. Reading a long story with an interesting title or image is no guarantee of a frightening payoff, and the writers often forget that just having someone meeting a quick and unfortunate fate does not an interesting story make.
When a real gem of a creepypasta is found, it makes all the searching and scavenging worth it (at least until it's time to fall asleep). So grab a friend, turn off the lights, and prepare to be scared to scroll any further — here are 17 of the scariest creepypastas.
1. The Slender Man
A post shared by SLENDERMAN ™ ☛ALWAYЅ WATCHES (@slender.mxn) on Aug 23, 2018 at 12:40pm PDT
Before this pale, faceless ghoul had his own movie and video game series, he haunted the forums of the internet with his finely pressed suit and unnaturally long limbs. The Slender Man's story is not a narrative one, but a pseudo-historical look at this monster's history with humanity that is tied into several other creepypastas.
Typically, the Slender Man preys on children and those who become obsessed with his existence, though no one knows exactly what happens to the bodies since no one has ever escaped from an encounter with him. Suggested stories featuring the Slender Man include The Tall Man and the Marble Hornets videos.
In the real world, this creepypasta figure became a key figure during an assault and subsequent criminal case in 2014 involving three 12-year-old girls. Wisconsin teens Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser, lured their friend, Payton Leutner, into the woods during a game of hide-and-seek. In an reported attempt to appease Slender Man, the duo stabbed Leutner 19 times and left her at the scene. Leutner managed to drag herself to a nearby road where a cyclist found her, and she was immediately taken to a hospital where she recovered from her injuries.
Soon after the attack, Weier and Geyser were arrested and tried for attempted second-degree murder. In 2017, Weier was sentenced to 25 years in a mental institution, while her accomplice Geyser was sentenced to 40 years in a mental hospital in 2018.
2. Candle Cove
A post shared by Nicky (@burialshroud) on Mar 6, 2018 at 12:52pm PST
Everyone has a television show from their childhood that they fondly remember. Like those who nostalgically recall the adventures of Dora the Explorer, Mister Rogers, and Sesame Street, some adults rediscovered their favorite show from the 1970s, Candle Cove, on a television forum in this creepypasta. Slowly, their memories of the show grow darker and more disturbing until one of the adults asks his mother about the true nature of the show.
The forum format of the story adds a spooky realism to the tale, also making it easy to recreate and share on other boards. If you find this story particularly compelling, watch the first season of the Syfy original series Channel Zero, which is based off this creepypasta.
3. Robert the Doll
A post shared by 😱معرفی فیلم های ترسناک👻 (@filme_tarsnak) on Apr 3, 2018 at 12:48am PDT
Not for the faint of heart, Robert the Doll really exists. The myths surrounding him vary, especially since it became so popular on the internet. The doll was given to artist Robert Eugene Otto in the late 1800s or early 1900s by a servant working in his family home. The doll, which he named after himself, then took on a life of its own and began to terrorize the family.
Otto is said to have kept his doll into adulthood and it subsequently tormented his late wife to insanity. When the doll was found by another family, the girl to whom it was given was terrified of it and refused to have it in her room.
The doll is currently residing in the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida. Visitors must ask Robert politely if they want to take his photo. If they mock him or take his photo without permission, Robert is said to lay a curse on them.
4. Anasi's Goatman Story
A post shared by Only Stupid Answers (@onlystupidanswers) on Aug 15, 2016 at 10:04am PDT
Based on a Native American legend, this creepypasta was originally found on 4Chan's paranormal board /x/, where some of the best creepypastas can be found.
The story follows a teenager who goes down to Alabama to be with his extended family. While he, his cousins, and their friends are camping out in the woods, they see a strange figure — the Goatman — jerking and spouting gibberish as it follows them. They spend the rest of the night in fear as the Goatman slowly infiltrates the group, terrorizing the teens into a frenzied state of paranoia.
This mix of pre-existing lore and new narrative is not rare for creepypastas, but it's the strength of the writing that really makes this particular story worth sharing. There are variations of this story, but most follow a similar formula where a group is stalked by the titular monster with different outcomes.
5. The Russian Sleep Experiment
A post shared by All Things Horror Lover (@allthingshorrorlover) on May 5, 2018 at 1:10pm PDT
A staple of best creepypasta lists everywhere, the title of this story itself carries with it a sense of dread and horror. Shortly after World War II, five political prisoners are subjected to an experiment in which they have to remain awake for 30 days in a tank filled with an experimental gas. As with most science-gone-wrong stories, the test subjects begin to lose their minds among a number of other gruesome symptoms. The horror does not end when the experimenters try to save their subjects — far from it.
Just know that this story may not be appropriate if you are squeamish or dislike gore, as the narrative goes into graphic detail about the physical state of the patients. Thankfully there are no pictures, or this would be the ultimate nightmare fuel.
6. Jeff the Killer
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by @creepypasta_0505 on Sep 4, 2018 at 10:30pm PDT
If you've never laid eyes on the infamous image of Jeff the Killer before, consider yourself lucky. The basic story concerns Jeff, a serial killer who hides in the closet and whispers "go to sleep" to its victim before slaughtering everyone in the household. Even more disturbing than his M.O. is his appearance — his face is smooth and stark white, a huge grin and small lid-less eyes. He is one of the most easily recognizable creepypastas, with his eerie stare posted across forums.
His origin story involves a fight that resulted in a chemical burn on his face and caused him to suffer a mental break. Soon after, he murdered his family and disappeared into the night to make guest appearances in your nightmares.
7. BEN Drowned
A post shared by you shouldn't have done that (@ben.is.drown) on May 3, 2016 at 4:04am PDT
Hacked video games are often found in creepypastas, but none is more infamous than BEN Drowned, the story of Matt, a college-age boy who picks up a hacked cartridge of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask at a garage sale.
As the boy plays, he captures the strange occurrences in the game and real life until it ultimately culminates into a full haunting. The narrator and BEN's fates are left up to the reader's imagination, but the tale implies that a happy ending is not in the realm of possibility.
This creepypasta is one of the few that integrate multiple types of media into the story. There is the text of the story itself — both a formal post version that went up on 4Chan's /x/ forums in real time and a diary included on the final post — and videos of the disturbing gameplay under the YouTube channel Alex Hall (originally Jadusable). The footage includes a warped soundtrack, terrifying glitches, and a creepy statue that is supposed to be BEN following the player around.
While the story is clearly fictional, the level of dedication to creating this eerie story makes it worth the read.
8. Persuaded
A post shared by Dark Town (@darktown.cz) on Jul 12, 2017 at 6:29am PDT
Zombies definitely have a place in creepypastas, especially after having taken over the majority of pop culture. However, in the spirit of keeping readers on their toes, these zombies don't need frenzied biting to increase their numbers, which elevates this tale above and beyond other zombie-inspired creepypastas.
After a massive oil spill, all those touched by the substance begin to viciously attack other creatures, causing mass panic across the country. The nameless protagonist holes himself up in his apartment, waiting for the screaming, violent horde to come crashing through his door and tear him limb from limb. If only that had actually happened, instead of the two day-long nightmare that really unfolds.
9. Smile Dog
A post shared by Son Of Darkness (@son_of.darkness) on Aug 24, 2018 at 5:57am PDT
If there's any story on this list that best captures the message "be careful what you wish for," Smile Dog is it. The creepypasta deals with an image posted on an old bulletin board system back in 1992 called smile.jpg. Those who saw the image either disappeared or died, save for one Mary E., who the narrator goes to interview. What he eventually learns is that some things, even simple pictures, are better left as mysteries than dealing with the horrifying truth.
In case you were wondering, the story does come with an accompanying image, but you may not want to see it after reading the full story. Though, in the end, you may not have a choice.
10. Annora Petrova
A post shared by The Unknown (@daily_creepypasta) on Jan 4, 2015 at 9:27am PST
This tale reminds us that it's best not to Google yourself, no matter how tempting it may be. Annora Petrova was one of the most promising figure skaters in the United States, until she discovered a sentient Wikipedia page about her. After trying to selfishly alter her fate by editing the page, her life spirals out of control in the most unexpected ways, until she is a friendless orphan (which isn't even the worst part).
While the Wikipedia page does not actually exist, it's a harrowing tale about messing with the unknown forces of the internet. If you do check this story out, make sure you click on the image at the bottom of the email for an extra layer of spookiness.

Yo, if you're not watching #ChannelZero on #SyFy get 👏 on 👏 that 👏 shit! Each season is a different story, season 1 is on Shudder, the other two are on SyFy.com #horror #candlecove #noendhouse #butchersblock
A post shared by WHO GOES THERE PODCAST (@whogoestherepodcast) on Aug 18, 2018 at 9:34am PDT
Haunted houses are at the center of many famous scary narratives, and surviving the night in one earned teenagers instant respect. Still, is the potential trauma and death worth the admiration of people who you'll likely never see again after graduation? This creepypasta answers with a firm and decisive "no."
NoEnd House promises $500 to whomever can survive a trip through its nine rooms of torture, a challenge that our narrator David readily accepts. The rooms begin to grow increasingly sinister and evil, pushing the limits of David's psyche and humanity. Are nine rooms really worth such a small monetary compensation that won't even pay for one therapy session?
The Syfy series Channel Zero also covers this creepypasta in its second season if you want to add some visuals to this spooky story.
12. Psychosis
A post shared by The Art Of Milta Svartvis (@nordteufel) on Aug 24, 2018 at 6:31am PDT
Can you really trust what you see and feel? Is your life all a computer simulation? Do we live in the Matrix? Are we all just people in someone's else dream that is bound to end? Is this the real life, or is this just fantasy?
Existentialism may not be the scariest of philosophies, but Psychosis shows that proving human existence beyond innate fears and paranoia is an inner battle that can never be won.
John soon finds out that he's been cut off from the rest of the world — his only communication with other people is through electronic devices. He quickly becomes paranoid and becomes convinced that everyone around him is lying, trying to get him to come outside his door so an unknown entity can get him. His logic tries to defy his gut feeling, but he falls further into the belief that something has gone horribly wrong outside, and it's coming for him next.
13. Doors
A post shared by The Unknown (@daily_creepypasta) on May 17, 2014 at 1:48pm PDT
This creepypasta is popular for its Shyamalan-esque nature. The tale follows a family with a young male narrator who talks about their daily lives together.
One night, the household is attacked by a mysterious figure that our intrepid protagonist tries to chase out. Giving any more of the plot away would ruin the surprise, but this story proves that brevity can be an effective tool when used to properly horrifying and amaze.
14. Gateway of the Mind
A post shared by Synther (@creepypastap0sts) on Jun 23, 2013 at 9:29am PDT
Ever wonder what would happen if you couldn't see, hear, smell, taste, or touch? Well, this creepypasta is here to put that theory to the test in what is honestly the most terrifying science experiment.
The story centers around a group of scientists who wish to make contact with God, and they believe that this could be possible by removing the body of all five senses. After performing a complex sensory surgery on a test subject, the poor person is completely disoriented and begins to hallucinate and "hear" people who have passed away.
What happens at the end is extremely meta, but the grueling details involving the pure mental torture the subject goes through is enough to absolutely creep anyone out.
15. The Rake
A post shared by Creepypasta is my life❤ (@creepylenya) on Jan 20, 2018 at 12:35am PST
This monster may not be as famous as his cousin, Slender Man, but he sure is just as creepy. The Rake is a humanoid creature that is completely pale, hairless, and has a thirst for human flesh.
According to Know Your Meme, this creature was originally created in 4chan's /b/ board where someone opened a "make your own monster" thread. The description that eventually became a part of The Rake was, "no apparent mouth, pale skin, six feet tall when standing, but usually crouches and walks on all fours, no nose, no mouth," and many other disturbing physical features.
Eventually this creature played a central role in many creepypastas. Most of these stories primarily involve documented encounters with the monster, and more often than not, the person dealing with The Rake never makes it out alive.
16. Lavender Town Syndrome
A post shared by Aura\|/ (@aurablade0012) on Mar 11, 2016 at 7:55pm PST
A classic video game creepypasta that hits a little too close to home for those of us who grew up playing the original Pokémon Red and Blue during the late '90s. This creepypasta centers around the game Pokémon Green, which was only released in Japan in 1996.
According to the legend, rates of illness and suicide in children in Japan between the ages of 7-12 have reached a fever pitch. The common connection between all of them? They all played Pokémon Green and had reached an area known as Lavender Town whose theme music had extremely high pitches.
After conducting studies on this phenomenon that became known as "Lavender Town Syndrome," scientists realized that there was a certain tone in the town's music that only the ears of young children and teens could hear. This had essentially drove this demographic who played the game to insanity, causing them to have headaches, ear issues, and die from suicide.
While this sparked many theories and creepypastas surrounding Lavender Town and the original Pokémon games, this creepypasta is actually loosely based off a real-life incident involving a Pokémon episode that only aired in Japan in 1997.
During the airing of the 38th episode of the original Pokémon television series titled Electric Soldier Porygon, a scene that made use of extreme flashing images gave hundreds of children epileptic seizures.
17. The Expressionless
A post shared by the eEyore (@the.eeyore) on Jul 24, 2018 at 6:52am PDT
In this creepypasta classic, a woman wearing a white gown that was covered in blood stumbled into a hospital in 1972. According to the nurse who is recounting this event, she said that this woman had the appearance of a mannequin, but was very much human-like in her movement and mannerisms.
After throwing a kitten she had clamped in her jaws on the ground, doctors and nurses rushed the woman into a hospital room for evaluation. Little does the hospital staff know that they have no idea who, or rather what, they're dealing with.
WATCH: These are the creepiest dolls we've ever seen
This story was originally published in 2013 and updated in 2018.

Trails for Beginners, Freeride, Slopestyle, and XC
You have several options when it comes to finding the best mountain bike tracks. You have the option of riding single track, freeride, slopestyle, or XC. You may pick a terrific path that is appropriate for your ability level. The trail labels represent the difficulty level. Green paths are good for novices, while blue trails are ideal for experienced hikers.
Mountain bike paths are classified into two types: single track and doubletrack. Single track mountain bike tracks are just broad enough for a bike to pass through, but doubletrack mountain bike routes are wide enough for four-wheel off-road vehicles to pass through. Single track mountain bike trails are less popular than doubletrack, although both are plentiful.
Beginners should begin with shorter, simpler paths. Experts should tackle more difficult trails. They should be mindful of terrain differences and practice cornering tactics. Because single track paths often change direction, good weight distribution is essential to avoid spinning out of bends. Practice looking where you want to go and looking ahead to leave the turn while cornering. Beginners should practice moving around roots and rocks as well.
Single track trails are often narrower than regular trails. Mountain bikers and hikers both utilize it. There are three single track routes in the Three Rivers Park District, and a fourth is being built in the Carver Park Reserve. It will include almost 30 kilometers of single track trails.
Mountain biking that mixes dirt jumping and downhill riding is known as freeride mountain biking. These bikes vary from ordinary mountain bikes in that they have shorter wheelbases. Their primary goal is to descend slopes swiftly, frequently with jumps, dips, and rough parts.
Several tournaments and events are held to promote the sport. Red Bull Rampage and Crankworx are two of these events. These events are regarded as the Super Bowl of freeride mountain riding. Several youth camps have also been established to promote the sport.
Riders that freeride are often stocky or strong, with long legs and a robust body. They gained strength via hours of spadework and jump overshoots. Freeriders are also prone to persistent episodes of Hucker's Neck. They often wear plaid shirts and, in warmer areas, vests. Many bikers have tattoos as well. Long hair is a status symbol in freeriding.
Slopestyle mountain bike trails are a terrific opportunity for riders to put their talents to the test. These trails are intended for cyclists with intermediate to expert skill levels. A slopestyle mountain bike and specific accessories are required. Slopestyle bikes, as opposed to hardtail bikes, have little travel, complete suspension, a single brake, and a single gear. They also need protective equipment, like padding and a full-face helmet.
Professional mountain bikers often utilize slopestyle mountain bike routes as training grounds. There are various places where you may practice your stunts and watch others do them. For example, Big White Resort created world-class mountain biking trails in 2016 and inaugurated a mountain bike park in August. In addition, in 2018, the resort expanded by opening the Big White Slopestyle Center. This is an excellent slopestyle training facility that recently hosted the Big White Invitational Slopestyle. The public may now visit the center.
Slopestyle mountain bike routes may be found all over the globe. The majority of them are not as demanding as MTB trails, although they may be difficult. The majority of riders purchase slopestyle bikes and use them as their everyday bikes. The suspension on these bikes is substantially firmer than on ordinary mountain bikes, making them perfect for dirt jumping.
You've come to the correct location if you're searching for a place to ride your XC mountain bike. XC mountain bike terrain may be challenging, and an XC bike is suited for these journeys. Front and rear suspension on a standard XC bike range between 80 and 120 mm. These bikes have less travel than road cycles but are still acceptable for weekend group rides.
With a shorter wheelbase and a lower bottom bracket, the XC bike is designed to be quick and efficient. Although the frame is sometimes composed of lightweight carbon fiber, entry-level XC bikes generally feature aluminum frames. The kinematics are quite adaptable, and various shock mounting methods allow for a smoother suspension stroke.
Park City's XC mountain bike routes are ideal for riders of all skill levels. While certain courses need suspension, many of the trails are appropriate for all kinds of bikes due to their lack of technicality. The Armstrong Path, a designated uphill trail, is a recent addition to the Park City trail network. Another wonderful track is the HAM trail, sometimes known as the "Spiro Light" trail since it is near town and ideal for short rides. Finally, there's the Princess Di route, which is popular among individuals who prefer seclusion to crowds. The path is divided into three parts and may be ridden in either a loop or in a single direction.

8 Tips for Cycling in California
1. Learn the basic road laws. Ride in the direction of traffic and use the bicycle lanes when available. California law says you must ride as close to the right side as possible, unless the road is too narrow to be shared—in which case you are allowed to “take the lane.” (Not all motorists understand this, though, so always take precaution in this situation.) The California Bicycle Coalition outlines all the bike laws to know before you ride.
2. Wear this, not that. Cyclists under 18 must wear a helmet, but realistically it’s a good idea for everyone. And if you need to hear your playlist while you ride, keep it to one ear—a law passed in 2016 does not allow for headphones in both ears.
3. Nervous on the road? Find protected trails. Road riding isn’t for everyone, and California has miles upon miles of protected road. Go to traillink.com and type in a specific city and it will show you the distance, surface type, and mileage of routes in the area. Or start by reading Bicycling magazine’s list of the best bike paths in California.
4. Research your route. Check out bike mobile app Strava’s city guides for routes in Bakersfield, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, and more—coffee shops and photo ops included. Also, the California Bike Coalition has a solid list of free online maps for routes from Humboldt County down to San Diego. Check out routes in the Central Coast at CycleCalCoast. You can also get turn-by-turn directions using Google maps: Dark green lines denote protected bike trails (read: no cars), light green lines show dedicated bike lanes, and dashed green lines indicate bicycle-friendly roads.
5. Consider a cycling event. Start by choosing an enticing ride and let that inspire your trip planning. On any given weekend, you’ll find dozens of cycling events throughout California. Want to tackle a century (100 miles) in wine country? Attend a mountain biking clinic? Check the event calendars on SoCalCycling.com, Raceplace.com, or Active.com for ideas.
6. Try a cycling tour. An organized bike tour can be a simplified, luxurious way to see new parts of California. Dozens of companies—including Backroads, Trek Travel, Bicycle Adventures, DuVine, and many more—offer trips everywhere from Joshua Tree to wine country to the northern coast, and they often include gourmet local cuisine and overnight stays at high-end resorts.
7. Find a group. Local cycling clubs often have group rides for all levels, either through a local shop or otherwise. USA Cycling has a fairly comprehensive list of clubs, but sometimes just walking into the local bike shop and asking is the easiest way to get info.
8. Watch the Amgen Tour of California in person. If there’s one way to get inspired, watching a world-class bike event is it. With Tour de France-level riders cycling throughout California every May, the Amgen Tour of California presents a rare opportunity to see a pro peloton up close.

11 eating competitions that will leave you disgusted — but impressed
You've probably heard of competitive eating, those food challenges in which people consume ungodly amounts as fast as they can, battling it out for cash prizes as high as $10,000. These challenges span the globe, are broadcast on ESPN, and include just about anything edible: jalapeños, shrimp cocktail, and gyoza, to name just a few.
They've also got history. In a story from the 1400s, notes Eater, a Nordic man enters an eating competition with a god. In the 1700s, poet James Taylor wrote of the "Great Eater of Kent," whom, Atlas Obscura reports, ate "some 60 eggs, a good portion of a lamb, and a handful of pies — a meal that left him hungry for more."
SEE ALSO: Instagram dedicated to perfectly plated dishes will make you appreciate tweezer food
As for today's competitions, food is supplied by organizers, and participants typically register via Major League Eating's website — the organization that oversees all professional eating competitions. Usually entry is free.
Competitive eaters, like the surprisingly slim 24-year-old YouTube star Matt Stonie, told GQ that when he's gearing up for a competition, he'll eat anywhere from 10,000 to 22,000 calories a day. In a 2015 interview with GQ, Joey Chestnut, the top-ranked eater in the world, said he only binges on solid food once every five days when he's in practice-mode.
The sport comes with its own set of risks, like asphyxiation, which has killed several competitive eaters, as well as morbid obesity, gastric ruptures, gastroparesis, and eating disorders, according to USA Today. But you don't need to be a professional eater to enjoy the competitions. We compiled the 11 best, weirdest, and most disgusting we could find. Get ready to be grossed out, but also impressed.
11. The Vaughan Pizza Fest World Pizza Eating Contest
Can you even finish one regular pizza?

At the Vaughan Pizza Fest World Pizza Eating Contest in Woodbridge, Ontario, competitors feast on as many personal pizzas as possible in record time.
At the third annual event, which took place in July of 2018, Geoff Esper broke a world record by eating 19.25 9-inch personal pizzas within 10 minutes, according to a Major League Eating report.
His prize for devouring those mini pizzas, supplied by Pie: Wood Fired Pizza Joint, was $4,000. Cash and free pizza? Not too shabby.
It's inconclusive what, if any, toppings made it onto the pies.

Major League Eaters from all over the world head to Toronto for this annual competition to see how much of the popular Quebec dish consisting of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy they can consume.
2017's poutine-eating winner, Carmen Cincotti, the number two eater in the world, ate a little over 20 pounds of poutine in 10 minutes, taking home a $6,000 prize. The competition returns for its ninth year on October 13, 2018.
According to Smoke’s Poutinerie, since it began in 2016 the event has helped raise more than $100,000 in donations, which support Friends of We Care in sending children with disabilities to summer camp. That's probably the nicest possible outcome of a bunch of adults eating a massive amount of cheese curds and gravy for public enjoyment.
9. La Costeña Jalapeño Eating Contest
Can you even imagine eating just one of these whole?

The thought of eating just one jalapeño is enough to make my eyes water. Imagine eating 265!
Molly Schuyler won a $1,500 grand prize for doing just that at the 2018 WBCA Jalapeño Festival's La Costeña Jalapeño Eating Contest in Laredo, Texas.
While the festival has just passed its 40 year anniversary, it's unclear when people began competitively stuffing spicy peppers into their mouths for cash prizes.
8. St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail Eating Championship

Joey Chestnut won this annual shrimp cocktail-eating competition in 2017, beating out nine other eaters for the grand prize of $1,500, according to RTV6.
The professional eater earned his fifth win by downing 10 pounds and 6.4 ounces of shrimp cocktail (including the sauce) all at once.
The Indianapolis-based competition has its contestants eat their shrimp with St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail sauce, which is famous for being exceptionally spicy. You can purchase your own bottle here.
7. The World’s Ice Cream Eating Championship

At the weeks-long Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, visitors can feast on fair concessions, interact with farm animals, and witness the World's Ice Cream Eating championship, where competitors try to eat as much ice cream as is humanly possible.
Geoff Esper won this year's competition in early August, eating 15.5 pints of vanilla ice cream in six minutes, according to Indy Star. He took home a prize of $4,000 for guzzling down an equivalent of about nine tubs of Häagen-Dazs.
6. Berkwood Farms Bacon Eating Contest
One pound of bacon is basically an entire package-worth of bacon.

At the Keystone Bacon and Bourban Festival in Keystone, Colorado, visitors can find bacon sampling stations, concerts, and most important: the Berkwood Farms Bacon Eating Contest.
The bacon-eating competition is still going strong since it began in 2008. February 16, 2018, brought a new bacon-eating champ. Matt Weis, a relatively new competitive eater, was crowned 2018's "gold skillet winner," after he ate a full pound of bacon supplied by Berkwood Farms.
Weis, who is on the high fat, low carb Keto diet, told the Des Moines Register that he can eat bacon pretty much whenever he wants, because it has the "perfect ratio of fats and protein with no carbs."
Must be nice.
5. The National Harbor World Peeps Eating Championship

The National Harbor World Peeps Eating Championship began in 2016. Despite its newness, many of the world's highest-ranking eating competitors, including Carmen Cincotti and Gideon Oji — numbers two and six, respectively — have turned up for the Maryland event.
At the inaugural competition, Matt Stonie ate 200 peeps in five minutes, setting a world record. In 2017, he beat his own record by eating 255 peeps. That's enough to fill at least 25 easter baskets.
4. World Pie Eating Championship

Unlike most eating competitions, at the UK-based World Pie-Eating Championship in Wiggan, competitors must only consume one thing: a single pie. The beef and potato-filled pies measure four inches in diameter and one inch in depth, according to the Daily Mail.
Whoever eats the pie the fastest receives a free lunch at Harry's Bar (where the competition takes place) and the "Bradley Piggins" cup — likely a nod to British cyclist and sports personality Bradley Wiggins, but with a cheeky meat-oriented spin.
The pie-eating contest has been happening for 24 years now and it has become a local and national favorite.
Martin Appleton-Clare won the competition for the third year in a row in 2017, eating his pie in 32 seconds flat. Vicky Lindley won the women's competition, devouring her pie in 30 seconds. Champions, both of them.
3. Acme Oyster Eating World Championship

This event takes place at the New Orleans Oyster Festival in Louisiana, and witnessing it must be a bit like watching a culinary horror movie. You will be scared, you will be amused, and you will be so relieved when it's all over.
Competitive eater newcomer Darron Breeden won the 2018 competition — and a beautiful oyster belt (a belt adorned with fake oysters) — for consuming 480 oysters supplied by the Acme Oyster House in one sitting. Absolutely revolting.
2. The Day-Lee Foods World Gyoza Eating Championship

The fried Japanese dumpling known as gyoza is a delicious appetizer or snack. But if you're Joey Chestnut, it's just another food you're eating by the hundreds.
In 2018, Chestnut gobbled up a whopping 359 gyoza in 10 minutes at the 12th annual Day-Lee Foods World Gyoza Eating Championship in Los Angeles.
Nineteen competitors, including Matt Stonie, fought for a large cash reward, the amount of which is currently unreported (last year it was $6,000). But Chestnut out-ate everyone.
1. Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest

Ah, Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog-Eating Contest, or the Super Bowl of the competitive food eating world.
In 1916, Nathan's hot dog-eating contest in Coney Island turned competitive eating into a sport, according to Time. Every Fourth of July, thousands of people still head to Coney Island to watch people eat one of the least healthy foods on the planet: the hot dog.
At Nathan's 102nd contest this summer, competitor Joey Chestnut defended his championship title, winning his third hot dog eating contest in a row while breaking a new world record of 74 hot dogs, according to NBC News. Chestnut has won the contest 11 times, and only been beaten once — by Matt Stonie in 2015 — since he started competing.
Miki Sudo also defended her title in the women's competition — which began in 2011 — eating 37 hot dogs. Each winner took home a grand prize of $10,000 and a belt (mustard-yellow for Chestnut, pink for Sudo).

(This article is from 2016 and a great deal of the forest has since been logged)
Poland’s new far right government says logging is needed because more than 10% of spruce trees in the Unesco world heritage site of Białowieża are suffering from a bark beetle outbreak. But nearly half the logging will be of other species, according to its only published inventory.
Oak trees as high as 150 feet that have grown for 450 years could be reduced to stumps under the planned threefold increase in tree fells. Białowieża hosts Europe’s largest bison population and wolves and lynx still roam freely across its sun-mottled interior. Its foliage stretches for nearly 1,000 square miles across the border between Poland and Belarus.
Beneath its green canopy, sunlight filters down on to a panorama of skyscraper trees soaring as much as 180 feet into the air, swampy water pools dammed by beavers, and psychedelic fungi that sprout from tree trunks.
But a recently-passed logging law to allow work to begin on the old-growth forest has divided families, and led to death threats against campaigners and allegations of an “environmental coup” by state interests linked to the timber trade. The logging in Białowieża is expected to raise about 700m złotys (£124m), and pave the way for extensive and more lucrative tree clearances.
Sources say that internal government discussions have already begun on extending the new timber regime to the national park, which covers 17% of the forest and has been untouched by humans since the ice age.
Mirosław Stepaniuk says he was sacked as director of Białowieża’s national park shortly after Polish elections six months ago because of his support for turning the whole forest into a protected conservation area.
He told the Guardian: “An environmental coup is being staged here not just by the government, but by the national forestry authority. If they are successful, it could trigger a cascade, an avalanche of similar cases in other places.”
Last week, another 32 members were dismissed from the state council for nature conservation, an advisory body which had opposed the logging plan and has been accused of “inefficiency”.
“We were sacked because the new government needs scientists who will applaud increased logging, to convince public opinion that this insane idea is okay,” said Przemysław Chylarecki, one of the dismissed scientists.
Most of the new council member are foresters, or colleagues of the environment minister, he added.
but it may not be minded to challenge the logging plan. Its president, Prof Janusz Sowa, said in February: “There is [only] one method for managing forests: an axe.”
The Polish environment ministry declined requests for comment.
The new Law and Justice party government is already in conflict with the EU over issues ranging from climate change policy to constitutional interference in the country’s courts and media, which is widely seen as undemocratic.
Now, Brussels is weighing a separate court case over the law allowing 188,000 cubic metres of trees to be felled by 2021. The axe could fall on trees dotted around at least a quarter of the Białowieża forest area, excluding the national park, and possibly as much as two-thirds of it.
Katarzyna Jagiełło, a spokeswoman for Greenpeace, told the Guardian: “The struggle to protect Białowieża and make it a national park is our Alamo. This place should be like our Serengeti or Great Barrier Reef. What happens to the forest here will define the future direction of nature conservation in our country.”
Significantly, Greenpeace refuses to rule out direct action if the foresters move in. “Right now we are present in the forest,” Jagiełło said, “and whatever needs to be done to protect it, will be done.”
With the logging law now passed, the battle for its future could begin at any time.
The forest occupies a symbolic and almost mystical place in Poland’s national consciousness, and its fate stokes dangerous emotions, according to Joanna Łapińska, a 37-year-old librarian in a Białowieża group opposing the clearances.
“Friends and families have fallen out over this,” she said. “When we were out petitioning recently, a sympathetic woman said ‘I can’t let you in because I don’t want a fight with my husband’.”
“People connected with the foresters are very aggressive. They told us that we are eco-terrorists, paid by the Germans – it’s usually the Germans, Jews or Russians – and they even said that somebody should have killed some eco-activists.”
At a conference organised by the national forestry authority in December, a former forester and beekeeper close to Jan Szyszko, the environment minister, received loud applause when he said that environmental experts “should be beheaded or put in jail for 25 years. They should be deported for what they did against the forest”.
At the same meeting, Mikołaj Janowski, a councillor from Podlaskie, told environmentalists: “You are parasites. You get money for your incomprehensible, hostile scientific papers … You should be sent to Putin’s gulag for 10 years or more.”
Revulsion against environmentalists has reached the highest levels of government. Earlier this year, the foreign minister, Witold Waszczykowski, told Bild newspaper: “We only want to cure our country of a few illnesses ... a new mixture of cultures and races, a world made up of cyclists and vegetarians, who only use renewable energy and who battle all signs of religion.”
Sections of the Catholic and Orthodox churches have played a partisan role in the debate, with a passage from Genesis - “be fruitful, and multiply, replenish the earth and subdue it” - often used to justify increased logging.
One orthodox priest from Hajnówka, Leonid Szeszko, recently called for scientific, environmental and NGOs which opposed the logging plans to be banned.
Szyszko, who has championed the logging law, is a regular guest on the ultra-conservative Radio Maria, a Catholic radio station, and appears at conferences with a priest garbed in a forester’s green uniform.
Foresters are revered in Poland as patriarchs, protectors and fire-providers and retain public support in surveys second only to police and fire officers.
Critics say though, that the national forestry authority is a state-run monopoly which suffers a conflict of interests between its twin mandates to protect trees while maximising profits from logging.
“It is a schizophrenic situation,” Stepaniuk said. “They are a regular profit-making company that deals in wood. They log and sell and make incredible money. If there was any pressure to increase their profits, they would not hesitate to sacrifice environmental protection, which they perceive as their least important duty.”
More than 90% of the national forest authority’s annual 7bn złotys (£1.2bn) earnings come from the firewood, furniture and pulp trades. Little of it is seen by the communities from which the timber was logged, which draw greater revenues from eco-tourism.
The forest’s 20,000 animal and plant species and Hansel and Gretel-style interior draw hordes of visitors every year, dazzled by its heterogeneous beauty and its clean reviving air.
Tourism has helped to make Białowieża wealthier than many nearby villages but as its young people leave in search of better prospects, backing for the foresters among the elderly who remain is iron-clad, stoked by an anticipated bonanza of cheap fuel.
Elżbieta Laprus, the president of Białowieża’s village council, said: “People who live here need firewood to heat their homes and [have] a good quality of life. They want to buy trees from here.”
A five-year long bark beetle outbreak has infected up to 1 million of the forest’s spruce trees, and forestry officials are adamant that “active” forest management is now needed to save the rest. This includes the logging of trees that are more than 100 years old.
Andrzej Antczak, the associate head forester in Hajnówka forest district, is a climate change agnostic, whose buildings are decorated with stuffed mink, deer and wild boar – a sign of the influence wielded by Poland’s hunting lobby which bridges the local community with politicians.
Sitting in his forest office, he said: “The best method to control bark beetle outbreaks is to cut down affected trees and take them out of the forest. But we are prohibited from cutting trees which are older than 100 years, or in nature reserves, wet woodlands or peat bogs. More than 35% of our territory is protected and it is a very big problem.”
Bark beetles outbreaks usually affect trees of more than 80 years old, and are associated with dry conditions and a drop in lowland water tables. Because spruce trees have flat root systems, they cannot soak up enough water to produce the quantities of resin they need to protect themselves. As the infestation spreads, the trees’ bark breaks off, further preventing water being circulated to its leaves. These turn brown and fall, before the tree finally dies.
The beetle eruption is a cyclical phenomenon that began earlier this decade and may now be nearing its end, according to park scientists. But it is the second worst outbreak in the last century and experts fear it may be a sign of worse and more frequent diseases to come as climate change takes hold.
Rafał Kowalczyk, the director of the Mammal Research Institute at the Polish Academy of Sciences, argues that as temperatures warm and precipitation falls, boreal trees such as pine and spruce will naturally retreat northwards. Nature should be allowed to take its course in the forest as it has always done, he says.
Walking through a section of the woods hit hard by the outbreak, he snaps off a shard of decaying bark and exclaims: “Look at this dead spruce tree! It is probably more alive now than it ever was because so many creatures are now living on it. There are nearly 100 invertebrate species that it gives life to. Woodpeckers are searching the bark for larvae, and there is space for spiders and fungi. The tree is dead, but the forest is still alive and it will regenerate.”
Kowalczyk points to a tree trunk several metres away, lying like a toppled sentry. It has three new tree saps growing from its decaying husk. Dead spruce create light in which seedlings best suited to the conditions can grow, he says. They also carve out space for predators such as lynx and wolves to hide, house themselves, and hunt.
One is the predatory beetle, which feeds on bark beetles, according to Luc Bas, the director of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s European office, who argued that removing the dead wood would also remove the bark beetles’ nemesis.
Chopping down infected trees would be ineffective because “to stop the beetle attack in a managed way, at least 80% of the spruce trees would have to be removed,” he wrote in April. “This simply is not possible because the wider region of Białowieża is divided in several interconnected zones, including large reserves and park areas that may not be touched.”
The IUCN and Unesco, and many of the world’s environmental scientists, have thrown themselves into the debate with gusto. Last week, a letter sent to the Polish government by academics, including professors at Harvard and Oxford, said that the plan would destroy the forest’s ability to recover from the outbreak and mark a “drastic” break with international conservation rules.
[international conservation] rules. It will radically change the forest and will also impact the economic returns from tourism to the forest.” Any move to implement it would be “a very alarming and worrying sign for the international community.”
Poland’s government and forestry authority counter that Białowieża is not a predominantly natural forest. Logging by Germans in the first world war, the Soviet Union in world war two and, particularly, the British Century European Timber Corporation, led to significant replanting in the forest, Antczak says. The very word “spruce” in English comes from the polish “s” (from) and “Prus” (Prussia).
Białowieża’s “naturalness” has been interrupted by Polish kings and Lithuanian dukes who fed their armies on its animals, Russian tsars who turned the park into a hunting ground, and Nazi soldiers who executed and buried Jews and resistance fighters there.
But mass tree felling and replanting in Białowieża did not begin until 1920 and trees of 100 years or older – 41% of Białowieża’s total forest outside the national park – have been naturally regenerating for millennia, even if their surrounding habitat is now mixed.
Chylarecki said: “The animals need all of these valuable trees to survive. Lynx or bisons or three-toed woodpeckers will not survive long in national park and nature reserves alone. They need large forest tracts to roam in.”
A compromise agreement with the previous government in 2012 allowed an increase in local logging 50% above estimated local needs. Local people say this was not enough. But spruce wood is resinous and does not burn well, so the firewood they need would have to come from other trees.
“Everything the activists do they do against the local community,” Laprus said. “People who don’t live here want to change our lives without consulting us. If the European commission really wanted to help, they would help give us grants to change our heating from wood to gas.”
For Kowalczyk though, logging would threaten the tourist trade which employs far more people than Białowieża’s 100 local foresters. “Tourists come here to see primeval forest which is wet and wild and dark,” he said. “They are afraid of the forest but it is magical. Managed forests, you can see everywhere.”
As the sun goes down on Białowieża, a night chorus of frogs, nightingales and warblers pipes up under its clear and constellated skies. The forest is still thriving, despite the shadow of the axe.
