Hello, my name is Shaleha Hajan, but everyone calls me Sha. I'm 17 years old and will turn 18 on April 26. Nothing extraordinary about me I'm just a regular girl with a lot of dreams
Goals include becoming a pharmacist, but I'm not sure what courses I should take in college because, to be honest, I don't trust myself. I'm insecure, low on confidence, and I hate that. I also want to express myself more, but I don't know how because I'm afraid of failing and I don't know what the future holds, and I know that's not good for me. Nevertheless, in spite of everything, I'm grateful for my happy family because everyone else wishes for the same. My parents don't put pressure on me to perform well academically they tell me that it's okay to receive a low grade as long as I try my hardest to make them proud. Now that I'm waiting for my diploma, I'll work hard to pass this grade 12 because after I graduate from college and find employment, I'll send them to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj and spoil them with money I earn from their sacrifices.
And now let me tell you a little bit about myself. I'm an introvert I detest crowds and don't really like to socialize. I used to love taking baths with music I also loved makeup because it's the only thing that can make me feel more confident. Finally, my favorite food is spaghetti from Jollibee ever since I was a child, I used to ask my mom to take me there for dinner because it was a special occasion for us both. Now that I'm a grown up, nothing has changed I still ask her to buy me spaghetti. That's why I adored and was so grateful to have my parents they're both very strong and go with the flow they're not strict but have boundaries they let us enjoy things because they said they had experienced them when they were still teenagers. My mom and father are the best parents in the world they're both so strong even though they face challenges. And Kindness is my language, and I speak it fluently. From helping strangers to comforting friends, I believe in making the world a better place through simple acts of compassion. It's not just a virtue it's a way of life. When the curtains close on a lively day, my heart finds solace in the captivating world of movies. They aren't just films; they are gateways to different emotions and stories. From heartwarming dramas to thrilling adventures, I find joy in the diverse narratives cinema offers.
However, the true masterpiece of my life is the love I have for my family and friends. They are my constants, the pillars of support through thick and thin. Love, in all its forms, is the driving force that propels me forward.
In this snapshot of my life, you've seen the cheerful glow, the unwavering loyalty, the kindness that colors my interactions, and the energy that fuels my pursuits. Together, they create a vibrant tapestry of a life well-lived – filled with laughter, love, and the beauty found in the simplest of pleasures.
Once more, this is Shaleha Hajan. I appreciate you taking the time to read about my simple life.

Proper installation of curtain wall firestop is absolutely critical to ensuring the fire safety of your building and Firestop has the skills and expertise needed to complete the job correctly.
In Saudi Arabia, Manycon Construction Company extensive catalog of tested designs combined with our industry leading team of Curtain Wall & Facades experts are here to support you on your next project, ensuring fire performance without compromising your buildings aesthetic.
A curtain wall building is a multistory structure having exterior walls that are not part of the load bearing structure. Because floor slabs are supported by interior beams and columns, there is a perimeter void or gap typically ranging from one to eight inches between each floor slab and the exterior curtain wall. Perimeter voids are generally hidden from view after construction, and once installed, these construction gaps are never inspected or reevaluated unless renovations are made. They must be sealed to prevent spread of flames, smoke and toxic gases in the event of a fire.

dear trash ass wrestling fans,
Go put on your rainbow wigs, red nose and size 15 shoes because everyone calling Alexa “Saudi Arabia Blood Money Bliss” are FUCKING CLOWNS. The circus just left, catch the bus to the next three cities over so you don’t miss your cue.
If Alexa and Natalya wrestled out there, they would’ve made history as the first women to compete in the WWE in Saudi Arabia. Then it would be a whole different story right? But instead, Saudi Arabia did what they do best and took the women’s match so what the hell were they gonna do? Catch the next flight home because “oh well we’re not wrestling now and I only came to Saudi Arabia to get some extra zeros on my check”? You’re a clown.
If they told Bayley and Becky to go instead for a champion on champion match- and I’ll remind you that this would be historic, first match in Saudi Arabia and all- y’all new identity would be shit how far you’d be up their ass. If the government cancelled on them y’all would’ve been up in arms, already having #GiveWWEWomenAChance trending on Twitter. Don’t lie and say you’d treat them the same. You’re a clown.
Regardless of wrestling or not, Alexa and Natalya still went to meet fans that would otherwise have a low possible chance of meeting them in person. They enjoyed themselves, made some fans’ day and enjoyed the scenery. Y’all dumbasses really bashing and trying to cancel Alexa for going to Saudi Arabia. Clown.
“Well Kevin Owens didn’t go! WWE pays his check like Alexa!” Shut up. It’s five minutes to curtain call and you still here for what? Kevin Owens could be replaced on the card. This would’ve been a trailblazing opportunity for both Alexa and Natalya so of course they’re not gonna pass it up. It’s showtime.
I swear y’all just want to hate for no good fucking reason these days. Take y’all clown asses out of her tag with that bullshit. And don’t forget your balloons too.

Calacus Weekly Hit & Miss – Elise Christie & Mark Clattenburg
Every week we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the previous week.
HIT - ELISE CHRISTIE
October is Mental Health Month in the UK and over the past year, sport has been at the forefront of making it acceptable to discuss emotional wellbeing.
Scottish speed skater Elise Christie is one of the latest to share raw emotions, and recently opened up about a rape ordeal she endured many years ago and the effect it has had on her mental health in the years since.
Along with her struggles with self-harm and medicating, Christie has also previously been open about taking breaks from social media, having often been the victim of online trolls.
Christie, a triple world champion, was expected to win medals in both 2014 and 2018, but crashes and disqualifications meant she was known for her disappointments far more than her successes.
Trolling even made her consider giving up on her beloved sport altogether after the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014 and revealed last year how she almost took her own life in 2018. She began to see a psychologist due to the intense mental suffering that the online abuse and bullying caused.
She explained: "For me it was a big step to even talk about the assault in the first place. I’ve always talked about the fact that I want to help people. There are so many women who have gone through or who might be going through this same situation right now and won’t speak up either.
"I just constantly felt like a medal winning machine for a while, like a robot. I wish I hadn’t got to the point where I felt so undervalued as a human being. That came from a lot of things. Sport was a part of it, how I was handled and the fact that my well-being was never a top priority.
"I was always doubting myself. Part of it was the fact that the mental health side was so new in sport. I didn’t even understand it myself yet."
Christie’s brave decision to re-live her traumas comes at a time when women’s safety is a prominent topic of conversation.
Not only have the revelations about Sarah Everard’s horrific murder recently come to light, but the response to the news has sparked major debate about the current state of women’s safety.
The conversation has shown no signs of slowing down since the initial explosion of social media posts in March, with many either relating to the London Metropolitan Police’s mishandling of the case, the heavy tone of victim blaming that has appeared rife throughout the past few months, or simply encouraging men to take positive action.
Tumblr media
Christie, like many other high profile figures, has realised that with the voice and the platform that her sporting career has afforded her, she has the power to start these open, honest and often uncomfortable conversations.
Sharing her story will undoubtedly encourage other women, in sport and beyond, to do the same.
During the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer, Simone Biles also used her platform to open a conversation about mental health within sports, after she withdrew from the team gymnastics final. Biles, like Christie, advocates putting mental health above anything else, even including the Olympic Games, particularly after the abuse she suffered at the hands of former team USA doctor, Larry Nassar that continue to affect her.
If one thing can be taken from the horrific ordeals Christie and Biles have faced, it’s that mental health must be taken more seriously in sports. Whilst sport and exercise is often considered to be a massive benefit to mental health, it’s no surprise that the pressures of high level competition can add additional challenges.
Thankfully, due to the bravery of sports people like Christie, mental health welfare is quickly becoming a priority for so many people.
Christie acknowledges the effect her mental health has had on her sport performance as she prepares for the next Winter Olympic Games which take place in Beijing next year.
Whilst still hopeful about the 2022 Games, she says that the competition is no longer about winning for her.
For Christie on a personal level, the real victory is being able to set an example for other women who are struggling - and help them to see that turning your life around is possible.
She added: “It won’t just be about medalling. I also want to be the girl who helped others turn their lives around and the girl who has turned her life around and has come back. That’s why I try to set that example."
MISS – MARK CLATTENBURG
Women’s football has enjoyed a long-overdue resurgence in recent years.
Barclays bank announced that they would become the title sponsor of the Women’s Super League while this year Sky Sports and the BBC announced a landmark deal which will see over 60 games broadcast over the course of the season.
This comes soon after the hugely successful 2019 Women’s World Cup which saw a significant growth in participation at all levels as England reached the semi-finals.
We have even seen a female referee, Stephanie Frappart, make history as the first female to referee a men's UEFA Champions League match, the game between Juventus and Dynamo Kiev in Turin.
But former referee Mark Clattenburg has set back gender equality in football by a few decades by suggesting that female referees must choose between their career and pregnancy.
Speaking on talkSPORT radio, Clattenburg said: “We always had a [female] assistant referee in the Premier League, Sian Massey[-Ellis], and we now have a woman refereeing in the Football League, Rebecca Welch, so women are starting to develop in the men's game.
"If you look at UEFA, for example, the French woman refereed the Super Cup final, so UEFA are getting more and more women.
"The problem with women is, and certainly in refereeing in football, they have a difficult pathway if they get pregnant during their refereeing career - it can stop them a long way. So they have to make this choice: do they want to be pregnant or do they want to be referees?
"They also have to pass the men's fitness tests and a lot of women struggle with the men's fitness tests; because, if you want to be in the men's game, you have to meet that criteria.
"If they pass all this and then choose the right path, I believe that women should be involved in the men's game as well as women being involved in the women's game. When you look at the Women's Super League, for example, there have been some high-profile mistakes. Why not bring in the best referees if you have the best leagues?
"Certainly, when you have a baby, you're out nine or 10 months and then you'll take another six months to recover from your body, so therefore it's nearly two years. And to pass that men's fitness test is very, very demanding."
Tumblr media
Women in Football CEO Jane Purdon was quick to condemn Clattenburg’s remarks, stating: “Mark says "the problem with women" is having to choose between carrying a child and their refereeing career, and that being pregnant "can cost you two or three years of your life.
"Women in all professions face challenges in balancing work and family. So do many men - but for men this is never seen as a problem, and men are never expected to choose between the two.
"In fact, many women in elite sport are in a position to resume their sporting careers quickly after giving birth. Others take more time out - by choice or by necessity. Neither of these scenarios is a "problem". The real problem is assumptions about female biology, and gender roles in childcare, which are lazy, outdated or plain false."
Clattenburg is on a charm offensive at the moment, opening the curtain to the mysterious world of football refereeing and dishing the dirt on many of his former officiating colleagues.
He had a fantastic career, taking charge of the 2012 Olympic Games men's final; the 2016 FA Cup final; the 2016 UEFA Champions League final as well as the final of EURO 2016 in France.
He’s no stranger to controversy, though, having been sacked as a referee and then reinstated after what amounted to an eight-month ban after "issues relating to his private business affairs.”
He was then accused of racially abusing Jon Obi Mikel during Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat against Manchester United in 2012, a claim he was later cleared of.
He was also dropped from the Premier League roster after breaking protocol to go and watch Ed Sheeran in concert, with rules dictating that officials must travel to and from the ground together to ensure ther integrity and security.
He admitted speaking to manager Neil Warnock on his car phone, again in contravention of officiating rules and claimed in his book that he was investigated for suspected match-fixing after buying an expensive car and on the field, famously missed Pedro Mendes’ ‘ghost goal’.
Clattenburg shocked the footballing world when at the peak of his success, he quit the Premier League for a lucrative advisory role in Saudi Arabia.
His book tour was supposed to set the record straight and revise opinions amongst fans who might have considered Clattenburg arrogant or a lose cannon.
Sadly, his latest comments play into lazy stereotypes that society and sport have sought to expunge but one wonders if he will do the right thing and apologise.

How the essence of the holy Kaaba is perfectly captured on canvas by Islamic artists to allow the world to share in its great importance and significance
The Kaaba is the most sacred structure at the centre of Islam's most important mosque - the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. According to research, it was founded by Abraham and Ishmael at God's command over four thousand years ago, and although it was rebuilt a number of times throughout the centuries, it remains a holy place of worship until this day.
The Kaaba represents the metaphorical house of God and the oneness of God in Islam and serves as an inspiration to many people. This historic monument is also an important topic to cover for many Islamic artists, and pictures and paintings of the Kaaba will often be found decorating the walls and interior of the houses of Muslim believers.
Showing an image of the Kaaba depicts the importance of this site for Muslims and it plays a huge role in their cultural belief and worship. For most Islamic artists, art and religion go hand-in-hand and their artwork is created to meet the requirements of faith. Some Islamic artists use their artwork to inspire others and the illustrations usually focus strongly on the role that art can play in one's religious experience.
Thanks to advanced technology, fine Islamic art can these days be found all over the internet and art lovers from all walks of life now have quick and easy access to some of the best modern Islamic art creations in the world. Most people enjoy the great selection and different giclee, but especially the modern Kaaba canvass prints that are made available by some fine Islamic artists.
The cube-shaped structure of the Kaaba, usually covered with a large curtain of black brocade and containing the sacred Black Stone, often serve as a great inspiration for many Islamic artists and Kaaba canvass paintings also provide the perfect home décor with a strong spiritual reference and deep religious impact.
For most people, the Kaaba is a highly regarded landmark and one of great significance in the complex history of humankind and there are quite a number of artistic variations of the Kaaba that one can find on the internet, or in art galleries. The aesthetics and importance of this historic structure have been captured by many artists and these paintings are favoured among Muslims across the world.
The Kaaba's structural features are often what inspire artists, for example, the heavy, ornate doors of the Kaaba on display arouse particular interest among many Islamic artists, but so does the kiswah, or heavy, black cloth, used to cover the Kaaba. This cloth covers 875 square meters of material that is two millimetres thick. With the annual Pilgrimage (ḥajj), over one million Muslims travel there to Mecca to pray and walk seven times around the Kaaba to have their sins absorbed.
Whether it is the still, yet strong emotion one can detect in a Kaaba painting, or the brilliant fusion of colours to highlight the structure’s holy presence, no-one knows for certain what exactly it is about a Kaaba canvass print that makes it so unique, but everyone will agree that it will almost always portray the artist’s deep-rooted passion for religion.
Islamic art in any size, shape or form, is highly popular among Muslims and whether they choose to decorate their houses with meaningful pieces of artwork, or cover their smartphone devices in Islamic art, they will always stray true to their religion.
Muslims worship the Kaaba as one of the most important shrines, but even for non-Muslims, the Kaaba structure offers great historical, architectural, and scientific importance. While non-Muslims are not allowed to visit the Kaaba or enter the holy ground surrounding it, they can still experience its history and importance through art.

I'm the same anon from before. I should probably just make a tumblr at this point. I promise I won't bug you after this. When I lived in Saudi Arabia (as a teenage girl) the religion teacher said that famous hadith about the prophet telling his niece to cover up was actually weak. She was saying this to convince us that the only true way was to cover our faces and hands as well. I said, if it's weak, why should we even cover our hair and arms? She wasn't happy about that.
You’re not bugging me at all anon, I enjoy it when people give me the opportunity to rant. And hijab/niqab rants are always fun. But feel free to make an account and commiserate with the rest of us!
Much like ARTPOP, your hijab can mean anything. Many Saudi ladies wear niqab in the belief that that was the original intent behind the hijab commandment. Though there are always weird-ass niqab revivalist movements, full-body coverings were more common in the past than the present. It’s not too hard to see why. I mean… look at this thing.
Tumblr media
Jesus. Regardless, you are correct that what Allah actually wants women to cover is very… vague in the Quran itself. Your head and chest, yes, that seems obvious enough… but what else? (Arms aren’t even specifically mentioned tbh.)
The specific wording of the ayat have been debated for centuries because many of the terms used are just really unclear, and terms used in the ahadith on this topic are also unclear. Khimar in pre-Islamic Arabia appears to have just been a loose head covering worn to shelter people from the sun; the ayah in An-Nur seems to tell women to drape their khimar across their necks and collarbone area instead of just letting it hang down their backs, which sounds very much like the modern conception of hijab. That ayah’s other demand, to conceal one’s “adornments” (zinatan), has a broad range of interpretations ranging from jewelry to beauty in general. The other one, in Al-Ahzab, uses the word jilbab (big loose robe type thing) and it’s a tricky one, because no one knows exactly what Mohammed meant by it. Were women supposed to just drape a large, shapeless robe over themselves, somewhat like an abaya (which is how most people think of “jilbab” now), or were they supposed to completely cover themselves with it, like a niqab?
Your teacher may have had a point in saying that Mohammed meant for women to fully cover themselves, even if the Quran doesn’t explicitly say that. But to figure this out we must dive into the hive of villainy and scum that is the ahadith.
First of all, we have this old classic, the one you’re talking about which defines the aurah as everything but the face and hands, meaning that niqab is not necessary.
Asma, daughter of Abu Bakr, entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wearing thin clothes. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) turned his attention from her. He said: O Asma, when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to his face and hands.
It’s not actually weak, it’s sahih. It’s mursal… but that doesn’t impact whether it is strong or weak as long as all the narrators are reliable.
But we can ignore that and dive into the rest of the ahadith, since that’s what your teacher said to do.
There are ahadith like this one from Bukhari and this one from Abu Dawud that suggest that women actually made new garments upon “Allah” commanding them to cover up (in ayah 31 of An-Nur), instead of just using their existing scarves to cover more of themselves. The word in question in both ahadith,فاختمرن ‏ , is unclear. Many scholars believe it means they made face veils for themselves. Others say they just made khimars (headscarves).
But the pro-niqab interpretation is that it doesn’t make sense to believe that it “only” means that they made khimars to cover their hair, neck, and chest, because women would’ve just draped their scarves differently rather than made entirely new garments if that were the case.
As for the other ayah, about “lowering the jilbab”, we have this hadith saying that women looked like they had “crows on their heads” after it was revealed, and good lucking figuring out what the hell that’s supposed to mean. Does it just mean they were wearing black? Was it covering the top part of their face? We just don’t know.
There’s this other hadith about the jilbab in which Mohammed says that if you don’t have one handy, you have to share one with a friend of yours. Again, what does that mean? What does it look like to share a jilbab? Pulling a big cloth thing over your head, or both of you huddling under something that hides your whole body? We don’t know!
That’s why there is so much confusion over this topic. No one bothered to clarify a damn thing and talked in idioms whose meanings have long been forgotten, to the point that it’s hard to tell what the average women in Mohammed’s era actually dressed like. There are ahadith that make it seem like many women left their faces uncovered while perhaps only the upper-class women (like Mo’s wives) covered their faces. So maybe it was just a small minority thing, right? But then we know that Mohammed specifically said that women can’t fully cover themselves while in ihram, meaning a fair number did at other times!! Aaaaaa! Do you see what I mean about this being absurdly complicated?
I guess the best we can say here is that some women interpreted the command as “cover your faces”, while others did not, and Mohammed didn’t seem to say anything to either of them. He demanded women cover their head, neck, and chest, in addition to wearing a baggy outer robe that they pulled over their heads. And it seems many women went beyond that and covered their faces too, at least that’s the best I can do in interpreting the weird-ass ahadith about “crows on their heads” and shit. But we can’t say anything else for certain.
So I would personally say that while wearing hijab and a jilbab-style garment, something loose and flowy, is necessary, niqab is not obligatory. If Mohammed had wanted it to be obligatory, he should’ve clarified it. But it has still been one interpretation of the command to cover for a very, very long time. We know that many, and possibly the majority of early Muslims (at least in some places) interpreted as requiring niqab because it’s mentioned in historical sources, including the 801 AD Tongdian  by Du You of China, which states it’s from a Chinese captive from the Battle of Talas who lived in the Middle East around the 750s AD:
When a woman goes out in public, she must cover her face irrespective of her lofty or lowly social position. They perform ritual prayers five times a day. They eat meat, fast, and they regard the butchering of an animal as meritorious.
To cap this off, I’d like to add that we know the specific occasion that made “Allah” demand women cover themselves. It’s…………. a lot.
As with many terrible things about Islam, the story of the clothing hijab (vs the whole curtain thing which is a separate tale) begins with everyone’s favorite sycophant, our friend the future Caliph Umar. Umar wants women, especially Mohammed’s wives, to be covered. He is practically obsessed with the idea, really. But Mohammed–I mean, “Allah”–is not demanding that the women cover themselves. Umar is very sad. And Umar has a plan to make Mohammed–I mean “Allah”–recognize the fact that the women really must be covered up. The story is recounted several places by Anas ibn Malik and Aisha, such as here and here in Bukhari:
Narrated `Aisha: The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqi` at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. `Umar used to say to the Prophet (ﷺ) “Let your wives be veiled,” but Allah’s Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam`a the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) went out at `Isha’ time and she was a tall lady. `Umar addressed her and said, “I have recognized you, O Sauda.” He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of “Al-Hijab”
Sauda, who is large and tall, goes out to go to the bathroom. Umar is goddamn spying on her and calls out to her to embarrass her, saying “Hey! I see you taking a piss!!!”. She runs home, mortified, and tells Mohammed. The intended message to Mohammed was: “Hey Mohammed, I saw your giant wife pissing tonight. If only she were covered up from head to toe, maybe I wouldn’t have recognized her because she’d just, like, be a hunched-over anonymous blob. But I did see her, sorry bro.”
Mohammed is deeply concerned by this and accordingly Allah reveals the command for women to cover themselves around unrelated men. That means either niqab or something so baggy and shapeless that your body becomes impossible to see, depending on the interpretation.
I hate Umar so much. I should do a post about his dumb ass sometime.
Moral of the story, one of the initial interpretations of it was as a full covering but it was only because Umar was a dick. Don’t pay attention to Umar. Ameen.

MBS: Why the world may be stuck with the ‘CEO of Saudi Inc’
Two years after the brutal murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi by a Saudi hit squad, a new book is pulling back the curtain on the kingdom’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).
Amid his father’s continuing health battles and the economic and political shakeups he has presided over, Wall Street Journal reporters Bradley Hope and Justin Scheck believe understanding the man known as MBS is more important than ever.
In Blood and Oil: Mohammed Bin Salman’s Ruthless Quest for Global Power, Hope and Scheck explore the rise of the aggressive and outspoken crown prince, his foreign and domestic policies, and his impact both as the next in line to the Saudi throne – and the effective “CEO” of the oil-rich nation’s vast oil wealth and investment portfolio.
Hope sat down with Al Jazeera Digital’s Managing Business Editor, Patricia Sabga, to discuss what he sees as MBS’s biggest missteps, the impact of Khashoggi’s murder on MBS’s international standing, and how the US election could affect US-Saudi relations. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Patricia Sabga: The Saudi royal family is something of a black box. It’s largely impenetrable to outsiders, including people who have spent decades visiting and studying in Saudi Arabia. How do you go about carving a window into that black box?
It’s always easier to understand what’s going on – whether it’s a business feud, a political feud or a royal family feud – when there’s an actual feud
Bradley Hope: It’s always easier to understand what’s going on – whether it’s a business feud, a political feud or a royal family feud – when there’s an actual feud. If there’s people that are really aggrieved on one side and people alienated – people who are in the circle and then out of the circle – those are a lot of opportunities that you have.
But the other thing that we mentioned in the author’s note is that a lot of people have this kind of conception about foreign correspondents – I’m not saying this is a rule, but that you need to be based in Cairo, based in Riyadh on the ground hearing what the shopkeepers are saying. But when it comes to the Gulf countries, the best place to be is London, and then the second-best place is probably New York or Paris, because those are the places where you can meet people who come out of those countries, whether they’re consultants or actual members from those countries, and really speak to them in a more free environment.
I would never attempt to kind of go to Saudi Arabia or the UAE, for that matter, and do a kind of unauthorised interview, because I know just how extensive the surveillance state is. And not just that, just culturally and in terms of attitude, people don’t want to talk much about sensitive things on the ground.
Tumblr media
PS:  In your foreword, you urge the readers to bear in mind that he’s not just the leader of the kingdom, but the “CEO” of al Saud Inc. Explain the distinction there and why you felt it was so key to readers understanding MBS and the kingdom.
BH: Take Aramco [Saudi Arabia’s state oil giant] for example. Historically, Aramco was almost its own domain. They left somebody in charge of it, it was never a royal that was the kind of the chairman of the board, so to speak, it was really kept separate. And the idea was this is such a crucial institution, we don’t want anybody interfering with it. Then one of the first things MBS did was take over Aramco himself, put himself in charge, and really take control of all the arms of the economic machinery of the state and start having them all go in the same direction that he envisioned. So that’s one thing.
He quickly became deeply entwined with the fabric of the global financial system. He’s the cornerstone investor in the $100bn Vision Fund. He is the cornerstone investor in this big infrastructure fund that Blackstone set up that’s largely doing infrastructure work in America.  And he developed all these relationships with everybody from the CEO of Six Flags to the CEO of Boston Dynamics that makes those crazy robotic-looking dogs.
I think that’s really important because when it came to the blowback after the murder of a Jamal Khashoggi, it was harder to disentangle him than it could have been for a different kind of prince. A different kind of prince could have been sort of jettisoned.
PS: He’s made so many missteps since his father became king. You’ve got the war in Yemen, which has become Saudi Arabia’s Vietnam. You’ve got the blockade against Qatar, which has failed to bring Doha to its knees. And then you’ve got the shakedown of wealthy Saudis at the Ritz. The most notorious misstep, of course, was the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. And then this year, there was the oil price war, Of all these missteps, which one has been the most profoundly damaging not to MBS himself, but to Saudi Arabia and the people of Saudi Arabia?
BH: I think I would have to say the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, even though it is a reflection on MBS himself, many Saudis, if you speak to them, no matter how high-ranking they are – even in the government – they’ll all say to you, this was wrong. This is not how Saudi does things. This is a shame on all of us. And those same people don’t blame MBS for it, but they all feel the same kind of guilt about it for being Saudis. And I think the world has sort of now viewed Saudi Arabia through that lens.
When it came to the blowback after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, it was harder to disentangle him than it could have been for a different kind of prince
PS: It earned him the nickname Mr Bonesaw, which dovetails with his initials MBS. But I find it really fascinating that people from the kingdom are so ashamed of this episode, and yet they still don’t blame Mohammed bin Salman for this.
BH: MBS has himself said publicly that he takes responsibility for it. I think most people don’t understand what that means, but what that means is that essentially, he’s admitting – without saying it so specifically – that I told my black-ops team to take care of the Jamal Khashoggi situation. That’s the sort of subtext that’s not kind of communicated. He told them, take care of this problem. What we’ll never know, probably – and even the CIA doesn’t seem to know the answer – what was the exact order? Was it: Please kill Jamal Khashoggi, that guy is a traitor? Or did he say: Take care of this guy – and then the team sort of went above and beyond? I think that we’ll just truly never know the answer to that, because whenever that was spoken, it may not have been spoken on a phone line or in a room with more than one person. So on one hand, I think Saudi people – especially the youth who feel so empowered by him and who feel like they give him the mandate – he has made a difference in their lives. They don’t want to turn back the clock. They have a lot riding on him, and that’s part of it.
They have a lot riding on him, and that’s part of it
PS:  This is a country with a massive youth population, and Vision 2030, which is MBS’s blueprint for weaning the kingdom off of fossil fuels, [involves] reinvesting that money into sustainable industries of the future to create jobs for all those youthful workers. If you had to give a report card to Vision 2030, how would you say it’s going?
BH: I would say it’s probably not going well in terms of achieving this idea of a complete – or even really taking large steps away from oil towards a diverse economy. But there’s other ways to look at it.
For example, if you think this is a country where subsidies are just way overboard, people were just having excessive amounts of electricity, water – it was a huge wasteful situation in the economy, some of those things have been dealt with. Subsidies have been drawn back. There’s kind of the introduction of the first sense of taxes. Some of the out-of-control benefits have been cut back. The royal family itself has been cut down to size by MBS, and those guys were responsible for a lot of wastage.

PS:  Vision 2030 wasn’t just about modernising the kingdom, it’s really about keeping the al-Sauds in power. They have to transform their economy, and this is a blueprint that really requires, number one, foreign direct investment [FDI] – foreigners actually pouring their money into the kingdom to help it transform, as well as wealthy Saudis also banking on their own country’s future. And by both measures, it’s falling very, very short.
BH: Well, that’s true, and that’s always a problem for any of the Gulf states. I’ve always seen it. The experienced people become very cynical, because all the big high-flying CEOs and bankers, they love to come for a visit – a flying visit – on their private jet. But then everyone gets the distinct impression that if they’re being offered a deal, it’s like the thirdhand deal – it didn’t work out for the other people, so they came to bring it to the Gulf. And the same thing goes for the investment: They may kind of make sounds or commit something, but ultimately, it’s not very real.
The one thing Saudi Arabia has going for it, though, is it has a larger population than some of these other countries, and that means it has a kind of domestic consumption possibility. So they’re in there building movie theatres right now and there is some investment from the company that’s building those, but nothing is happening on the FDI front that’s headline-grabbing.
I think all of these missteps created an environment of uncertainty, and even if you were considering investing in Saudi Arabia, you may have definitely pulled the plug or just decided to wait a few years because you don’t know, is this place even a secure country? Is Mohammad bin Salman going to be the crown prince still? Is he going to stick around, or is somebody new going to come in with a new vision?
All of these missteps created an environment of uncertainty, and even if you were considering investing in Saudi Arabia, you may have definitely pulled the plug or just decided to wait a few years
PS: Let’s take a look also at the other side of the equation, wealthy Saudis investing their money in the kingdom. How is it going on that measure?
BH: I think it’s not going particularly well. A lot of those guys felt pressured to buy into the Aramco IPO to make it reach the right levels. A lot of what happens in Saudi Arabia, unfortunately, is still about the image. Justin [Scheck] and I wrote a big story about how the sovereign wealth fund props up the stock market whenever there’s bad news. So after the Jamal Khashoggi murder and other bad news moments, the sovereign wealth fund goes in and buys the biggest stock, which was, I think at the time, SABIC, the Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation, and it lifts the whole index to make it look either flat or slightly up. It’s a huge waste of money, it doesn’t actually help anyone, it just looks good.
A lot of what happens in Saudi Arabia, unfortunately, is still about the image
PS: It’s interesting that you mention the Aramco IPO and the shenanigans by the sovereign wealth fund pouring money into the Saudi stock market to boost it during times of stress. So what does this say if everybody knows the system is being gamed? What does that say about not only confidence in the kingdom, but confidence in MBS?
BH: The people who are more charitable think Saudi Arabia was locked in an almost time warp where things weren’t progressing, everything was moving so slowly, the social fabric was antiquated, to say the least. And now, here comes this young prince who is shaking everything up, and he’s going full guns blazing on every direction. Some of it’s working, some of it’s not working at all, and some of it’s blowing back on him in a big way, but they feel glad that somebody is willing to shake things up. That would be the more charitable side.
The less charitable side is that he’s uncontrollable to some extent – that would be the criticism. That’s why the economy can’t develop, because there’s not a sureness or a basis in the rule of law, for example. That’s really the problem with the Ritz crackdown. It did send an image or a message to Saudis and to people in the government and in the royal family about how things are going to be different. But it doesn’t give business people any kind of security going forward.
The early years of MBS, he was willing to take just such dramatic actions – and we look back now and just think how over the top it all is
PS: I also have to ask you about the blockade of Qatar. Full disclosure, Al Jazeera is majority-funded by the government of Qatar. This blockade was intended to really just bring Doha to its knees and bend it to Riyadh’s will and effectively make Qatar, if you will, a vassal state of Saudi Arabia. And it’s failed. So far, to date, it has absolutely failed.
BH: I think it’s definitely failed to convince Qatar to change its foreign policy, and it hasn’t been good economically. Probably it’s not that important economically, but I think it just comes down to this idea that the early years of MBS, he was willing to take just such dramatic actions – and we look back now and just think how over the top it all is. And very few of those big bets have paid off. The only ones that have, have been things like, for example, believing that Saudi Arabia could handle women driving. A lot of princes and kings before thought Saudi Arabia couldn’t handle it, and he kind of called that bluff and found that actually, Saudi society was very ready for that kind of change. But some of these other big, foreign gambits just did not pay off.
MBS sort of played Trump better than Trump sort of played MBS
PS:  The Trump White House enjoys what some would describe as a very friendly relationship with the Saudis and with MBS. How would you describe it?
BH: Well, I think one of the points of our book is that MBS sort of played Trump better than Trump sort of played MBS. At that time when Trump was first elected, MBS was still trying to secure his power. He still had one cousin who was in front of him in the line of succession, and he hadn’t even convinced, perhaps, some of the other influential people in Saudi Arabia that he was the effective man for the job. And he was only a few years into this, he couldn’t have had absolute confidence that he could pull it all off.
So he really dedicated himself to convincing the Trump administration to come over to Saudi Arabia for their first foreign trip, and they really listened and paid attention. He put all of his team on it.
They lavished him with gifts and white tiger fur and all these different things, and of course, he ate it all up. And later on, when push came to shove, the Trump administration was loath to ever push back on the Saudi side. So I think MBS got a lot more out of the equation than Trump did.
I think MBS got a lot more out of the equation than Trump did
PS: Do you think that Trump’s very cosy relationship, if you will, towards Saudi Arabia plays for or against his bid for re-election with voters?
BH: Well, it seems like this whole normalisation of the Gulf states [the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain], two of them so far with Israel, is actually a big plus for him. There’s a lot of conservative voters who care about that issue and who are very pro-Israel. I think that’s got to be a positive, probably, more than a negative. They’re not going to convince the left-leaning people who already have certain preferences in that dispute, but he may persuade some of those people in the middle who are kind of on the fence. People who are thinking, you know what, I don’t really like this aspect of the Trump presidency, but then this could be an issue that tips them back into his camp. So I think it probably is a net positive for him and it’s probably a net positive for the Gulf states who are cooperating in the future. Because if another president came in – like Biden – it doesn’t mean that they can be jettisoned tomorrow. Because now they’ve become a crucial part of the Middle East strategy.
Mohammed bin Salman has become so centrally powerful and he’s likely to become the king for decades
PS: So in that sense, do you think that Biden would do anything differently vis-a-vis Saudi Arabia?
BH: I think there’ll be a lot of sounds. There might be some investigations, but I think at the end of the day, Mohammed bin Salman has become so centrally powerful and he’s likely to become the king for decades, that the people [Biden] brings in to intelligence, defence, foreign affairs, they’re going to say to him: This is not a situation where we can actually change the outcome. There is not somebody waiting in the wings to take over. And even if there was someone that they thought could take over, the idea of them taking over is a very bloody, scary situation. Nobody wants to encourage any regime change in Saudi Arabia. So ultimately, they’re just going to have to be realistic. They’ll try to put some pressure on issues that they prefer, but I really can’t see them doing much differently.
