Community Alumni Celebration for Charles Rogers June 15th at 3pm at the Eagles Nest Art Center Gymnasium:   The Town of Salem celebrated 70 years of  Community service by presenting Charles Rogers with the Key to the town and a  “Lifetime Achievement Award.”  Charles and his wife Sue are both 90 years old and have been married 70 years.  Charles is a Godly man and has been a pillar of the community.  Both Charles and Sue have served on the Town Council over the years.   Charles was instrumental in Salem’s school getting the gym we all enjoy and love today.  The first Salem basketball team played on a dirt court.  The hardwood floor would have been tile if not for Charles.  He insisted to the district, “ We have waited for years and waiting 3 more weeks to get hardwood would not matter.”                                    submitted by Susan R Hopkins

Sit. Sit!   C'mon, girl.  Good sit. Please Sit! Sit Girl, Sit!!!"   Says I to Me: "It's not working... I have a stupid dog...I'm wasting my money on the trainer.  THEN, the trainer divulges, "Look how much energy YOU are wasting and you are getting NO RESULTS.  Chris discloses, "Just  make sure that you have Starlight's attention,  THEN say the command ONCE and wait for her to follow your order.  By Golly! It worked.  HOW I WISH I HAD USED THIS TECHNIQUE WITH MY BOYS!  Instead of "Drink your milk, Drink your milk, Drink you MILK!!!!" I could have said. "Focus on what I am saying.  Drink your milk."  Then, there would be a waiting period for them to respond.  Hey! I had the car keys to drive us to the park.  I controlled  cookie distribution. But neither event would unfold until they drank the milk.  Brilliant! The winner is chosen by the school faculty. . .Max also won the best all-around student medal. . .Other medals went to Carmelita Chastain, for second scholastic honors; Betty Lee Towe, as best girl athlete; and Howard Abercrombie, as best male athlete. . .Public speaking awards, made possible annually through sponsorship of R.W. Burgess, were won by Rufus Land, a junior, and Claudia Whitmire, a freshman. . .Safe-driving certificates and $25 cash awards went to student school bus drivers Howard Abercrombie, Max Nicholson, Roddy Whitten, Vance Galloway and Troy Lusk.
