The 64th International Debutante Ball: A Royal Night In Photos - New York City, NY Patch

The 64th International Debutante Ball: A Royal Night In Photos - New York City, NY Patch
Have you ever wondered where the ultra-rich and royal find a husband? It used to be the International Debutante Ball in New York City. Today the event is a networking opportunity and family celebration for the high society, so they say, but I’m not convinced. After attending this years 64th Debutante Ball I’m pretty sure some of the ladies took away a new crush on the attending young men. Welcome to the world of the ‘real’ Gossip Girls.
Twenty-two accomplished young women made their debut at the ball and dinner dance at the Pierre Hotel on December 29th. This year’s debutantes represented Belgium, England, France, India, Liechtenstein, Scotland, and nine American states. The Honorary Chairman and sponsor of the event was Ms. Julia Irene Kauffman, and Co-Chairs were Ms. Anne Eisenhower and Mrs. David R. Hamilton.
In today’s Daniela’s Lens, I’ll tell you all about the event from my photographer’s point of view.
1:32 p.m. Uh oh, my dress is ripped. For someone who goes out to black tie events almost every night, I own a disturbingly small number of dresses. Exactly three, to be precise. Why, you ask? Well, it’s the same reason why I live in the crappier part of Jersey City with four roommates, and I have to make a budget plan whenever I need new batteries for my camera. I spend the next hour sewing my dress back together before I make my way to the city to take another glimpse at the world of royals and billionaires.
3:11 p.m. And although this all sounds very cinderellaeske, it doesn’t always feel like it. On my way through Jersey City to the PATH train, I almost get into a brawl of drug dealers heavily fighting each other on the street. I hope they don’t pull out guns. I run in my sneakers, high heels in one hand, holding my long dress up with the other, 40 pounds of camera equipment on my back, heavy wind ruining my blow dry and sweating the makeup off my face, up the hill around the next corner and make a long detour to get away from whatever these thugs are doing.
Miss Aubrienne Krysiewicz-Bell, daughter of Mr. Thomas Bell and Dr. Susan Krysiewicz, representing New York City
5:01 p.m. I arrive at the Pierre Hotel. Some ladies are already here. Aubrienne takes a last look at her white designer dress.
White is the color of the debutantes tonight. And don’t you dare to wear white if you are a guest!
Miss Adelaide Mathilde Escaravage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Escaravage, Far Hills, representing New Jersey
5:16 p.m. To become a debutante, it’s not enough to be rich. You have to go through a rigorous selection process. The candidate needs to be recommended by a previous debutante and be a “women of distinction” who is highly accomplished in athletics, community service, academics, philanthropy, and charity. And of course, she needs to be able to pay the presentation fee which is around $22.000 (writes the New York Post in 2016).
Miss Catherine d’Andigne, daughter of Comte et Comtesse Arnaud d’Andigné, Paris, France and Miss Daniella Helena Cass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald A. Cass, Great Falls, Virginia
5:22 p.m. Catherine admires Daniella’s dress.
5:31 p.m. We are all ready for the number one high society bash tonight. Even the photographers are dressed up in their best black tie. Only one of them is in jeans and pullover. “Nobody told me about the dress code!” he says a little embarrassed. “I hope they don’t kick me out!” They won’t.
5:32 p.m. White dresses wherever you look!
Miss Daniella Helena Cass
5:34 p.m. It’s time to get ready for the group shot.
5:45 p.m. “Two girls are missing!” says the organizer. And someone says: “Yes, they are not here yet. They are coming from downtown!” “How can you be late to an event you paid many thousands of dollars to attend?” one of the photographers whispers to me. I shrug. “Why is downtown a problem?” I ask. But nobody answers.
Miss Jolie Jacqueline Vanier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay David Vanier, Paradise Valley, Arizona
5:46 p.m.
“Let me fix your train”, I say to Jolie and lay out the satin perfectly for the photo. “Tu es jolie, Jolie!” I say and hope I don’t sound weird.
Charlotte Drummond-Herdman and Lexa Drummond of Megginch, daughters of Mr. Giles Herdman and The Honorable Mrs. Drummond-Herdman. Megginch Castle, Errol, Perthshire, Scotland
5:51 p.m.
Ah, Scotland! These ladies live in a real castle! It’s the 15th-century Megginch Castle in Perth and Kinross, in central Scotland.
6:02 p.m. And here come the boys!
Meredith Olivia Shields, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Stratford Shields, Chicago, Illinois and New York, New York Graysen Leslie Airth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Airth, Newport Beach, California and Emilia McManus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McManus, Basking Ridge, New Jersey
6:09 p.m.
Smile!
Dominique Lucile Melcher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Collins Goff, Ft. Worth, Texas Catherine Fields Coselli, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Stapleton Coselli, Houston, Texas and Miss Olivia Claiborne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Steven Late, Austin, Texas
6:11 p.m.
They are all from Texas! Beautiful dresses! Beautiful ladies!
6:13 p.m. It’s time for the cocktail hour before the main event starts.
Archduke Michael of Austria, Princess Maria of Liechtenstein, Princess Aurelia of Liechtenstein, daughter of Prince and Princess Hugo of Liechtenstein, Valduz, Liechtenstein and Syrgenstein, Germany and Victoria Gordon.
6:24 p.m. I say hello to Victoria Gordon, who is a friend from California. She was a debutante together with her sister Natalie Gordon at the 60th International Debutante Ball.
A group of German-speaking guests joins us. And because I’m from Germany and my first language is German, I chat away.
Austrians and Liechtensteiners both speak German, and we have the same genetic background which is so very obvious, it’s eerie. Similar hair color, skin color, bone structure and we are all very tall. But my long limbs are weirdly hanging around my body like the Slendermans compared to the grace of the princesses.
“You all look alike!” says Victoria.
“Yeah, I can spot people from around that region in New York from half a mile away,” I say. “When I lived in Germany, I was so used to the people; I thought we all look very different. Only when I started living in a lot more mixed place like New York, I discovered we are all clones over there.”
6:31 p.m. It’s time for the next part of the event.
Miss Jolie Jacqueline Vanier
6:45 p.m. The ladies are taking their places in the ‘receiving line’ also called the ‘assembly line’. That’s code for the debutantes standing in a line waiting to greet the guests. Each one’s representative flag is positioned behind them. The flag is either the one of their home country, state or coat of arms if they are royal.
Miss Elisa Defries and Miss Lara Defries, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Defries, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, England
6:55 p.m. And here are the British ladies!
Miss Axelle Laurent Josi, daughter of Mr. Jean-Louis and Mrs. Stephanie Laurent Josi, Brussels, Belgium and Hong Kong
7:04 p.m. Another German speaking debutante!
Miss Ireland Irving, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. Irving, Naples, Florida
7:05 p.m. Hello Florida!
Miss Katherine Louise Benham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Michael Benham, Princeton, New Jersey
7:06 p.m. All the debutantes are carrying a bouquet of pink roses.
Miss Mary Valentine Apple, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Valentin I. J. Apple, Winston Salem, North Carolina
7:11 p.m. Very beautiful, Miss Apple!
7:45 p.m. It’s dinner time! I’m still running around, taking photos from all angles. Then everybody starts eating.
But for the photographers, this is the hardest part of the evening. Watching other people eat. No matter how much food you had before the event, it’s going to be mouthwatering and painful. Especially because they serve the most exquisite dinners, money can buy at these type of events. I will never get used to it.
Sometimes, when I can’t take the smell of deliciousness anymore, I escape to the restroom and put peppermint oil under my nose.
7:48 p.m. Tonight, I’m in for a surprise.
I stand in the back at the bar together with another photographer when the organizer comes along.
“I’ll have a seat for you in a minute, and you guys can have dinner!” she says to us. I look at the other photographer. We both smile all over our faces. This is the best thing that can possibly happen. Jackpot.
And the banquet manager chimes in: “Do you want some shots while you are waiting? You should do some shots!”
We both politely say thank you but no. Instead, he brings us two glasses of white wine filled all the way to the top. There is half a bottle in each of our glasses.
7:52 p.m. And then we get to eat. The chef serves the most tender cut of beef, a blood-colored, thick slice of premium filet mignon with mashed potato and string beans. It’s so good; I have tears in my eyes while eating. And I’m not exaggerating. A perfectly prepared meal is my number one choice over almost anything. I’m so very thankful.
8:21 p.m. Hi family Gordon!
Miss Nikhar Tandon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Satyan Tandon, Mumbai, India
8:31 p.m. What a gorgeous dress and a gorgeous lady!
Miss Catherine d’Andigné and Christophe Hauptmann
9:03 p.m. Next up is the main gist of the night: The introduction of the debutantes. Each debutante walks down the aisle escorted by a young man of distinction and accompanied by a song representing her countries national anthem or a song associated with her state or city.
Miss Catherine d’Andigné and Christophe Hauptmann
9:04 p.m. She then walks up the stairs onto the stage and makes a curtsy or bows down, and this is her moment to be formally presented to the social scene — each debutante chooses her unique obeisances.
10:00 p.m. All the girls go on the dancefloor. It’s time to dance with your dads!
Miss Axelle Laurent Josi and her father
10:06 p.m. Of course, these young women know how to do a traditional ballroom dance.
Miss Ella Albright Ekstrom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Ekstrom, Barrington, Illinois
10:12 p.m. Let’s celebrate!
10:17 p.m. Everybody is loosening up now.
10:23 p.m. This is the Archduke Michael of Austria dancing with the Princess Aurelia of Liechtenstein. They look amazingly beautiful, don’t you think so?
“Where is Liechtenstein?” asks one of the photographers.
“It’s between Austria and Switzerland. It’s tiny.” I say.
Liechtenstein is the size of Brooklyn but with a population of only 38k (Brooklyn has about 2.6 million people) and a lot of medieval castles. It’s the sixth least populated country in the world; even Monaco has more inhabitants.
10:41 p.m. Axelle is the best dancer tonight!
11:09 p.m. Ella found some handsome escorts!
Aubrienne Krysiewicz-Bell
11:13 p.m.
So romantic!
1:00 a.m. Yes, the party is still going strong. But I need a break. I sit down in the back and kick away my high heels. Uh oh, my feet are going to be destroyed tomorrow morning. Let’s have a drink.
1:30 a.m. “Do you want to dance? I’ve seen you working all night, I think you should have some fun!” a man approaches me and asks me for a dance. It’s another ballroom dance, and I really don’t know what I’m doing but trick myself into thinking I’m good enough to fake it. He spins me around the dance floor, and I suddenly feel like Cinderella!

Reporter on Katie Hill scandal promotes GOP candidates for her seat

Reporter on Katie Hill scandal promotes GOP candidates for her seat
Van Laar’s views, like RedState’s leanings, are no secret: She’s worked in Republican politics and the site is conservative, as is its owner, Salem Media Group. But Van Laar’s shift from reporting on Hill, and publishing what some have deemed “revenge porn,” to promoting Republicans for Hill’s old job is a blurring of roles that would be unacceptable in mainstream newsrooms.
In the days leading up to the 2018 election, Van Laar wrote an op-ed on why she supported Knight in his race against Hill, and in July, she praised a Republicanwho at the time was planning to run against Hill in 2020. “Hanging out with our future Congresswoman Suzette Valladares today!” she wrote, along with hashtags such as “#runsuzetterun” and #savecalifornia.”
Van Laar did not respond to a Twitter direct message request to discuss her coverage. Multiple representatives from Townhall Media, which oversees RedState, did not respond to phone and email requests.
Hill’s swift political downfall highlights the way in which allegations and images that might not meet the bar for publication in traditional newsrooms, the one-time media gatekeepers, can find a wide audience online and spark a scandal covered by mainstream reporters.
Hill, who is bisexual, admitted last week to having an “inappropriate” relationship with a female campaign staffer, but has denied having a sexual relationship with legislative director Graham Kelly, the latter of which would violate House ethics rules and became thesubject of an investigation.
Hill’s estranged husband, Kenny Heslep, accused her having a relationship with Kelly, as RedState’s Miranda Morales wrote on Oct 10. Just over a week later, Van Laar reported that Hill had been in a long-term “throuple” relationship with her husband and the female campaign staffer, in a piece which included a photo of a naked Hill brushing the hair of a woman whose face is intentionally blurred.
The photo, which spread online and on social media, dramatically increased pressure on Hill, who said she decided to resign so that “the good people who supported me will no longer be subjected to the pain inflicted by my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives who seem to happily provide a platform to a monster who is driving a smear campaign built around cyber exploitation.”
While many Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, endorsed her decision to leave Congress on the grounds of having had a relationship with a campaign staffer, some others depicted her as a victim of cyber-bullying by RedState and her estranged husband.
Brianna Wu, a video game developer who lost a bid for Congress in 2018 and is running again in 2020, tweeted Monday that conservative outlets that published private photos of Hill “enabled her ex-husband’s abuse.”
“Hill was exploited by her abusive ex-husband who used nude photos of her to smear her,” Wu added. “No one would argue that it’s proper to have a consensual relationship w/ a subordinate. That doesn’t change the fact that Hill is a victim of revenge porn.”
Lawfare managing editor Quinta Jurecic wrote that the Hill photograph on RedState appeared to be “the first instance in which a politically aligned publication — or, indeed, any publication — has released nonconsensual pornography depicting a politician of the opposing party affiliation.” And that, she wrote, “is an ugly line to have crossed.”
In her RedState piece that included the photograph,Van Laar justified sharing this “information obtained from multiple confidential sources” because Hill was now a member of Congress.
“It is this writer’s view that events that occur within a marriage or affairs that lead to its demise should be kept between the parties involved and are not the business of the general public,” Van Laar wrote. “When those events or affairs occur within one of the parties’ workplace, though, and that workplace is the United States Congress, the public should know about them as they determine that elected official’s fitness to serve.”
Van Laar noted that RedState didn’t publish other “intimate photographs of the women.”
The Oct. 18 piece also included text messages posted on Heslep’s now-deleted Facebook account in which he is purportedly speaking to a friend about Hill having a relationship with Kelly, the former finance director who worked as Hill’s legislative director in Congress.
Hill denied having an improper relationship with Kelly to POLITICO on Oct. 22 and said her “abusive husband seems determined to try to humiliate me.”
“I am disgusted that my opponents would seek to exploit such a private matter for political gain,” she said. “This coordinated effort to try to destroy me and people close to me is despicable and will not succeed.”
Hill said she notified the Capitol Police to investigate how “intimate photos of me and another individual were published by Republican operatives on the internet without my consent.” Hill later threatened legal action against The Daily Mail, which published the same photo of Hill and the staffer, albeit without the woman’s face blurred, along with others, including one in which Hill is nude and holding a bong.
The Daily Mail also suggested Hill had a tattoo representing Nazi imagery, a claim her lawyers described as “false and defamatory.”
On Oct. 24, RedState’s Joe Cunningham accused news outlets of either ignoring his site’s reporting or spinning coverage in defense of Hill.
“It is because of that hostility to places like RedState, where we do not hide our partisan lean, that actual, real journalism can so often get ignored or butchered,” Cunningham wrote. “It is journalistic malpractice to pretend that the story Jen broke is anything other than how she has covered it.”
POLITICO first reported Sunday night that Hill planned to resign, which she later announced in a letter, saying it was “the best thing for my constituents, my community and our country.”
Pelosi responded with a statement saying, “Congresswoman Katie Hill came to Congress with a powerful commitment to her community and a bright vision for the future, and has made a great contribution as a leader of the Freshman Class.”
“She has acknowledged errors in judgment that made her continued service as a Member untenable,” Pelosi continued. “We must ensure a climate of integrity and dignity in the Congress, and in all workplaces.”

Unable to think of an H word I could get a post out of (I searched the dictionary for a likely candidate, but in vain), I fall back on a post that appeared April 9, 2018, exactly one year ago, for Day H of the A to Z Challenge. It’s a little English majory, but I restrained myself as best I could. For example, I used only five semicolons.
*
In November 2016, I posted about my upcoming visit to Salem, Massachusetts for UnCon, the writers’ conference hosted biennially by Writer Unboxed.
And in my usual flippant fashion, I said, “Cold is what I wanted when I registered for the conference last summer. Sweater weather. I don’t get nearly enough.”
The truth is that I’d heard good things about the conference and wanted to go to it.
But there’s also truth in the flippancy: the Austin fall was unseasonably warm, and I wanted to wear sweaters.
So my wishes were granted. Good conference; cold weather.
The the other draw was Salem itself and specifically, the House of the Seven Gables, the house Nathaniel Hawthorne used as his setting for the novel of the same name. What English major could resist?
I attended a class in the annex, a modern building on the property, and during a break walked around outside. Across a courtyard sit the Counting House and Hawthorne’s birthplace.
Hawthorne and his wife, Sophia Peabody, moved from Concord to Salem in 1845 and the next year he was appointed “Surveyor for the District of Salem and Beverly and Inspector of the Revenue for the Port of Salem.” While in the position, he had difficulty writing, and told writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whom he’d met in college, “Whenever I sit alone, or walk alone, I find myself dreaming about stories, as of old; but these forenoons in the Custom House undo all that the afternoons and evenings have done. I should be happier if I could write.”
After Whig Zachary Taylor’s election to the presidency in 1848 election Hawthorne, a Democrat, lost his job. A letter he wrote in protest was published in a Boston newspaper, and his dismissal became known and talked about throughout New England. But he returned to writing and in 1850 published The Scarlet Letter.
It was one of the first mass-produced books in America, selling 2,500 volumes within ten days and earning Hawthorne $1,500 over 14 years. The book was pirated by booksellers in London and became a best-seller in the United States; it initiated his most lucrative period as a writer. (Wikipedia)
It has been called the first psychological novel, and writer D. H. Lawrence later said that there “could be no more perfect work of the American imagination.
Unfortunately, Hawthorne died long before Lawrence expressed his opinion; among his contemporaries, the novel became the subject of controversy.
Hawthorne’s friend Edwin Percy Whipple objected to the novel’s “morbid intensity” and its dense psychological details, writing that the book “is therefore apt to become, like Hawthorne, too painfully anatomical in his exhibition of them.”
It also added to his troubles. There was a “furious” response from newspapers, politicians, and members of the clergy. (Hawthorne also mentioned his job in the introduction and referred to certain politicians, so he shouldn’t have been surprised that those readers weren’t complimentary. Just my opinion.)
In “A Chapter from Nathaniel Hawthorne: Studies In The House Of The Seven Gables,“ Thomas St. John quotes Hawthorne on Salem:
I detest this town so much that I hate to go into the streets, or to have the people see me. . .I feel an infinite contempt for them, and probably have expressed more of it than I intended; for my preliminary chapter has caused the greatest uproar that ever happened here since witch-times.
“He half-expected the crowds to tar and feather him,” says St. John: ‘from such judges as my fellow-citizens, I should look upon it as a higher honor than a laurel-crown.'”
The Scarlet letter was published in mid-March 1850. In late March, the Hawthorne family moved to Lenox, Massachusetts, in the Berkshires. In 1851, he published The House of the Seven Gables, which poet James Russell Lowell said was better than The Scarlet Letter and called “‘the most valuable contribution to New England history that has been made.'”
When I began this post, I intended it to comprise mostly pictures of the House of the Seven Gables. But to ensure I got my facts straight, I googled, found the chapter by St. John, and was struck by Hawthorne’s opinion of Salem. I’d assumed he was happy there. After all, he’d set a novel there.
Never assume. Research instead.
I also thought I would post early for a change. Vain hope. Once I began clicking, I followed one bunny trail after another–for over three hours. And I enjoyed every minute. I learned Hawthorne translated The Aeneidfor entrance to Bowdoin College when he was sixteen , and that The House of the Seven Gables is closely linked to Virgil’s epic. That in itself makes the search worthwhile.
Now, end of digression and on to the heart of the matter.
*
I took the photographs in this post during the break between classes. The image of Nathaniel Hawthorne is detail from a portrait hanging in the House of the Seven Gables Museum store.
H Is for The House of the Seven Gables: #atozchallenge Unable to think of an H word I could get a post out of (I searched the dictionary for a likely candidate, but in vain), I fall back on a post that appeared April 9, 2018, exactly one year ago, for Day H of the A to Z Challenge.

This Was Jackie Kennedy’s Incredible Mark on History
AP/REX/Shutterstock
This article was originally written by Carl Sferrazza Anthony and first appeared in the June 2001 issue of Reader’s Digest.
“I’m sixty-two now, and I’ve been in the public eye for more than thirty years,” Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis told a friend in 1991. “I can’t believe anybody still cares about me or is interested in what I do.” How wrong she was.
When she stepped into our lives, she was just 31, the youngest First Lady of the 20th century. She lived in the White House only from 1961 to 1963, yet remained an object of admiration, and even obsession, until the day she died. Part of the fascination with Jackie was due to timing: television exploded as a mass medium at the precise moment she and JFK and their beautiful children became the First Family. We could see them on TV, we loved what we saw, we wanted to see them again. Later, after the assassinations of JFK and RFK, she provided a place to focus the national grief.
She was more, though, than a pretty face on the small screen or the queen in a sad fairy tale. As a modern Supermom, she raised Caroline and John into exemplary adults, avoiding the potholes many of their cousins hit. Just as feminism arrived, she went to work as a book editor, brown-bagging her lunch and sitting in a windowless office until she earned her way up the corporate ladder. She kept on trying at romance, too, marrying Aristotle Onassis and, after he died, settling into a comfortable relationship with financier Maurice Templesman. This spring a tribute to Jackie Kennedy— modern American woman plus some spectacular clothes she wore in the White House—will be on exhibit at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, before traveling to Boston. “It’s an opportunity,” says guest curator Hamish Bowles, “to explore the style and the substance of a woman who defined a generation.” Here, a fresh look at Jackie, and why we still admire her.
Underwood Archives/UIG/REX/Shutterstock
Although she called it Camelot only after JFK’s assassination, Jackie began working on an image for the Administration the moment she and the President moved into the White House. She thought everything through, especially how things looked.
Take, for instance, the many photographs of the family at play, which appeared in magazines like Life, Look and The Saturday Evening Post. Seemingly casual, some of them were in fact professionally lit, and the people in them styled, made-up and posed. Photographer Richard Avedon shot a breathtaking series of photographs of Jackie and baby John. The pictures are as crisp and alluring as the fashion-magazine covers for which Avedon is best known. “She was aware of what the camera did for the children, and for the family,” says Jacques Lowe, another photographer who worked with Mrs. Kennedy.
All of her efforts at creating a Kennedy image came together in the 1962 television tour of the White House. One-third of the nation was watching that night—56 million people. The special, which won Jackie an Emmy Award, displayed her meticulous restoration of the Executive Mansion. But it was the First Lady, not the glorious Empire style of the revitalized Red Room, that riveted the nation. “I remember watching and listening to Mrs. Kennedy more than thinking about the White House,” Barbara Bush later said in an interview. See these rare photos of John and Jackie Kennedy.
Creating Camelot also meant that bad habits were discouraged, at least in public. A lifelong smoker (Marlboros, Salems), Mrs. Kennedy did her best to veto photos that showed her with a cigarette in hand. Her press policy was “minimum information given with maximum politeness.” Her unavailability, in the end, only heightened her mystique.

“I feel as though I have turned into a piece of public property,” Mrs. Kennedy told an acquaintance in early 1961. During the Presidential campaign the previous summer and autumn, the press and the public focused intently on the young Mrs. Kennedy. And small wonder: no candidate’s wife in living memory had looked so good. The blunt cut of her hair, the clean, simple lines of her brightly colored clothing—American women craved the Jackie Look.
Partly it was the sheer novelty of her. Jackie was a new woman for a new time—the ’60s. She waterskied, she danced the twist, she listened to the bossa nova on her White House hi-fi.
Department stores began using models and drawings in ads that looked like Jackie. A movie magazine offered advice on “How to Be Your Town’s Jackie Kennedy,” with penny-wise advice on copying her look. The subject of all this attention left her somewhat bewildered. “What does the way I wear my hair have to do with my husband’s ability to serve as President?” she asked.
The scrutiny became so intense that Jackie realized she needed help from a professional. She turned to New York designer Oleg Cassini, a family friend who had once been one of Hollywood’s top costume designers. As she wrote him, “I refuse to have Jack’s Administration plagued by fashion stories of a sensational nature—or to be the Marie Antoinette of the 1960s.” Cassini recalled his initial meetings with Mrs. Kennedy, when they worked out what she would wear at her husband’s swearing-in:
“She asked me to come meet with her in her Georgetown University Hospital room just days after she gave birth to John], two months before the Inauguration. All the other women [ would be wearing] furs, looking like bears. My concept was to make her look divinely simple in a beige coat and hat. She came out, and was instantly distinct.
“Immediately a style was established. It was not a French look, not an American look, but a Jackie Look. She said to me, ‘You dress me perfectly for the role.’ For the role! And what was the role? First Lady of the country. And First Lady of the world, really, at that moment.”
(You’ll want to steal these 7 timeless fashion tips from Jackie Kennedy.)

On Friday morning, November 22, 1963, Jackie put on a Chanel suit in the rooms she shared with the President at the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth. The President, Mrs. Kennedy told friends later, had chosen the suit for her. Within hours, the pink wool jacket and skirt had become a part of history. Mrs. Kennedy wore the suit through LBJ’s swearing-in ceremony, on the long, sad flight back to Washington, and finally for the return to the White House.
On the plane coming East, she began to reflect on how she wanted the White House prepared for the return of the President. As White House usher Nelson Pierce recalled: “That afternoon was spent looking up the details so that we could have things as near as possible the way they were at the time Lincoln was assassinated. It was 4:20 Saturday morning when Mrs. Kennedy came with the President’s body, and at 4:10 we had finished putting up the last pieces of crepe.”
Everyone had an opinion about the funeral details. Catholic Church officials in Washington wanted her to hold the ceremony in the grand Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. She held out for St. Matthew’s, which was smaller—but was where the President had often attended church. Some members of the President’s family wanted him buried in the Kennedy plot in Massachusetts. She decided on Arlington National Cemetery. The Secret Service questioned her decision to walk behind the caisson from the White House to the church.
Jackie stood firm. Familiar as it is, footage of her long walk behind the riderless horse, Black Jack, a pair of boots tucked backward into the stirrups, has lost none of its awful majesty. Recalling Mrs. Kennedy, and the dignity she showed, French President Charles de Gaulle said, “She gave the whole world an example of how to behave.” This is the last thing JFK said to Jackie before he died.

Even while attending her husband’s burial, Jackie never forgot her obligation to Caroline and John. Just hours after the funeral, the widowed former First Lady hosted her son’s third birthday party at the White House.
From the time they were toddlers until they left home, Mrs. Kennedy’s children were her priority. Caroline and John drew nearly as much curiosity as their parents. “I think it’s hard enough to bring up children anyway, and everyone knows that limelight is the worst thing for them. They either get conceited or else they get hurt,” Jackie said. “They need their mother’s affection and guidance, and long periods of time alone with her. That’s what gives them security in an often confusing new world.”
She relished the role of everyday mom. For Caroline and her classmates, Jackie managed to get ahold of a pregnant rabbit so that the children could all anticipate the arrival of a litter of bunnies. Recalled Kennedy friend and historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., “On Halloween evening in 1962, the doorbell rang. When my fourteen-year-old daughter opened the door to the trick-or-treaters, she found a collection of small hobgoblins leaping up and down. After a moment a masked mother in the background called out that it was time to go to their next house. It was, of course, Jackie.”
After the assassination, Mrs. Kennedy and the children moved into a house in Georgetown. To her dismay, crowds of gawkers still showed up daily for a glimpse of John and Caroline at play or on their way to school. The next year Jackie moved to New York, hoping the big city and an apartment high above Fifth Avenue would offer a refuge. “I want them to know about how the rest of the world lives,” she told the New York World Journal Tribune in 1967, “but also I want to be able to give them some kind of sanctuary when they need it, someplace to take them into when things happen to them that do not necessarily happen to other children.”
Through the ’60s and ’70s, Jackie made JFK as much a part of her children’s lives as she could. They visited some of his favorite places, such as the ranch of an Argentine family friend, where JFK had spent a spring vacation as a teenager. On that trip, John Jr. was too young to grasp what the visit was about, but Jackie said she believed it would all fall into place for him later. “I want to help him go back and find his father,” she said.
Said family friend Fred Papert: “She raised her kids so that all three locked onto each other in a way that families almost never do. They needed one another. They all came through for one another. She really liked them as friends, and they her.”

Many people reacted with astonishment when Jackie married Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis in October 1968, just four months after the assassination of Robert Kennedy. She was 39. He was in his sixties. What was she thinking?
In fact, Onassis had been a Kennedy family acquaintance for years. Rose Kennedy, JFK’s mother, gave Jackie her blessing. As she later wrote, “I told her to make her plans as she chose to do, and to go ahead, with my loving good wishes.” Jackie later said: “When I married Ari, she of all people was the one who encouraged me—who said, ‘He’s a good man. ‘”
One thing Onassis also offered was security. “He was a source of refuge and protection,” said her brother-in-law Sen. Edward Kennedy. “I think she felt safe with him.” Jackie married Ari on his private island, Skorpios, and had at her disposal homes in Paris and Athens, helicopters, a yacht and Olympic Airways—all of it heavily guarded.
Transformed from the Widow Kennedy to Jackie O, she became a sort of irreverent, naughty figure in the American imagination. She withdrew, but people still wanted to see what she was up to. Paparazzi from all over the world obliged, once even photographing her sunbathing with no suit on.
The marriage grew cooler as the years went on, and Onassis went into a slump after the death of his son, Alexander, in 1973. Two years later, he was dead. Jackie and Ari were together for just seven years. For her, it was a healing interlude. ”Aristotle Onassis rescued me,” she said, “at a moment when my life was engulfed with shadows.”
Peter Simins/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock
The period that began in September 1975 was perhaps the happiest time of Jackie’s life. She was doing exactly what she wanted––and not what parents, husbands, family, friends, and the public expected. Now 46, she took an editing job at Viking Press. She had no previous professional editing experience. She was assigned a tiny office, which was what she also got when she moved to Doubleday as an associate editor in 1978. “Like everybody else,” she said, “I have to work my way up to an office with a window.” She finally got a view when she was promoted to senior editor in 1984.
She was an intense, hands-on editor. Colleagues could tell when she was pleased—she would rub her hands together and say, “Hot spit!” Variety was the only consistency of her projects: photography books like Egyptian Time by Robert Lyons and Allure by Diana Vreeland, biographies of Czar Nicholas II and Jean Harlow, recollections by friends of Fred Astaire and George Balanchine, and even a collection of articles from Rolling Stone. Says Doubleday colleague and friend Lisa Drew:
“Part of the joy of publishing is that you learn from every book. Much was made in the press about how she got her own coffee and did her own xeroxing. It wasn’t a big deal, but it was written about as if a miracle had occurred. It amused us how people outside were dazzled by this celebrity. Brighter, funnier, nicer than many, yes—but she was just another person.”
In February 1994, when she was 64, it was announced that the former First Lady had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, often a treatable form of cancer. Five years earlier, she had responded to my written questions and then corrected the manuscript for one of my books, First Ladies: The Saga of the Presidents’ Wives and Their Power, 1789-l990. Judging from her notes, I sensed she was able to view the notion of being the world’s most famous woman with detachment. In the middle of a sentence that read “If there was one sphere where Jacqueline had great influence, it was fashion,” she scribbled, in blue ink, ‘Much to her annoyance!’”
She was pleased with the book because she felt it would move people’s opinions of her beyond mere style: “I hope now that people will realize,” she said, “that there was something under that pillbox hat.”
Now, take a look at these rarely seen photos of Jackie Kennedy.
