    eBook by Steve Robinson
2nd Edition
‘How To Become A Professional Hunter In Africa’ reveals every strategy and secret I’ve learned hunting in the African bush as a Professional Hunter.
Hi, I’m Professional Hunter, Steve Robinson.
There are many things you can do to become a PH in Africa that may make a tremendous difference to your success.
‘How To Become A Professional Hunter In Africa’ details everything I’ve learned from over 30 years experience.
I’ve written this book as a step-by-step information resource to help you succeed as a Professional Hunter and succeed in the African hunting safari business.
“An informative book by someone who has “been there and done that” which any prospective professional hunter would do well to read.
If you are thinking of a career in professional hunting, then this book would be a great place to start. Steve tells it like it is. A brutally frank discourse on a profession as rewarding as it is challenging.”
John Harris – Former President KZN Hunting and Conservation Association
“Wow, Steve. I have been hunting professionally for 14 years and I can honestly say I have learned a lot from ‘How to Become a Professional Hunter in Africa’.
Well done, it was well overdue in the industry and will not only put new Professional Hunters on the right track, but will also be used as a reference for those of us that has been hunting for some time. If there was a book like this when I started it would have made my first few years a lot easier, you say it the way it is! A book that will be referred to as the future Professional Hunter’s ‘bible’.”
Jason van Aarde – Professional Hunter in Tanzania, Mozambique & South Africa
I was very lucky indeed in that my first few years’ experience which counted as my, somewhat unusual, Professional Hunting apprenticeship was in a more relaxed generation.
By chance I met and become friends with the now late Vivian Good who kindly gave me that Professional Hunting apprenticeship. He was not only an excellent PH but also a good man who gave unstintingly of his advice, encouragement, hospitality and friendship.
I struck lucky again when I went along to undergo my first formal Professional Hunter training and examination with Ian Goss of the Goss Estates Professional Hunting Academy in Kwa Zulu Natal.
“It feels like I am doing my PH career all over again.
A lot of flashes back into my life, if you know what I mean. It reads easily, it’s clear and very understandable. I can even use some of it in my life right now. The only problem with this e-book is that I should have had it about ten years ago!!!
I can see that it will be the bible for first time and up coming Professional Hunters. Well done!!”
Wikus Groenewald – Professional Hunter – South Africa, Tanzania & Mozambique
“I have had the good fortune to have been on three African Safaris with Steve Robinson as my PH. On each occasion his camps, conduct, knowledge and expertise have been a revelation and, having read his eBook on how to become an African Professional Hunter, I can see why.
The scope and depth of knowledge required of an African PH is astounding and it’s something you don’t fully realise until you’ve read this book.
If I were a youngster and looking to become an African PH, this book would have to be essential reading, indeed, without it, the aspiring PH would need to spend a long time gathering the information contained therein by not only research but also by actual experience, and that sort of experience can take years to obtain.
Additionally, a client reading the book can get a most illuminating and useful insight into the business, gaining an appreciation of just what goes into organising an African Safari and the role of the PH. This will, undoubtedly, give the client a better understanding of what goes on, leading to a better, more enjoyable, safari.”
Peter Lang – Veteran African Hunting Client – UK
The information in this book has never been published anywhere else before. I’ve held nothing back. ‘How To Be A Professional Hunter In Africa’ is your complete, 242 page, step-by-step guide to success in the African hunting industry.
“Good, practical advice in this eBook on bushcraft, camp management, arms and ammunition, the ins and outs of running a safari business, and the law as related to hunting (and don’t forget here that trophy hunting usually involves legislation from more than one country, and African governments tend to regard change as being as good as improvement and are forever fiddling with their laws).
The material herein is well-presented, and from the standpoint of on-the-ground experience, Steve Robinson is more than qualified to write it – it worked for him!”
Ira Larivers – Editor ‘African Hunter Magazine’

“Steve, I recently purchased your ebook, I am a Professional Hunter from South Africa. I am also hunting the Zambezi Valley.
The reason for writing you is although I am an experienced hunter this ebook is the best resource I have come across, very informative and as the saying goes “you are not to old, or too clever to learn something new” this book contains valuable information and tips even to an experienced hunter. The “I know it all” guys can buy this book and find out that they do not know it all there is people, like you, that know more.
Thank you for an excellent resource, and I wish you the best with your safari hunting career, if you treat your clients like you have compiled this book they are surely in good hands and your mentors can but only be proud of you.”
Theo Verster – Professional Hunter, South Africa
“Possibly the most concise, comprehensive, and relevant book ever written on African Game Hunting.
Steve Robinson’s book will provide essential guidance to the newcomer, and will also be a useful remedial guide to the more experienced hunter that may be experiencing some problems.
His passionate and non-apologetic approach to African Game is relevant throughout the book, as he concentrates on the subject of hunting rather than it’s continual justification.
I think you will need two copies, one for the hunting truck and one for the bookshelf.”
Shaine Derrick – UK hunter

“Unique is a much used and an often inappropriately applied word, but it certainly describes this fascinating e-book by Steve Robinson .
Written in a light but authoritative style the author takes you through the trials and tribulations of becoming part of (and being successful in) the African Hunting Safari industry. Well illustrated with colour pictures and peppered with his experiences as an Englishman who came to Africa some thirty years ago and made a success of life as a Professional Hunter and Safari Operator, the book really is an invaluable asset to anyone thinking of a career as an African PH.
But in truth it is more than that, it is an up to date insight into the world of Professional Hunting in Africa and will be of as much interest to clients and African hunting buffs as to prospective Professionals.
The book is entertainingly structured featuring not only the authors work but contributions from others, either directly or through links to the extensive Shakari Connection website.
From Cites to cisterns, buffalo to bullet performance all aspects of life as a PH are covered. Steve does not pull his punches and quickly dispels romantic illusions that some might have of the industry.
If you ever wanted to know how to construct a top quality wilderness hunting camp, manage staff and clients and the thousand other things that are required of the modern African PH then this is the only readily available source.
Whilst there has been (and still is) much published from the Safari client perspective no previous work has addressed the ‘other side of the campfire’. I certainly wish it had been available when I started my recent path to PH status. Steve and Susan are to be congratulated on an original and innovative contribution to the industry.”

The Best Knives For Bushcraft
What is the best knife for bush craft - the one you have with you!
It may be an old adage but it is a good one. Ultimately, most knives will do many useful jobs, but are some better than others - of course they are! It just depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For example, you wouldn't use a small penknife to baton wood. Equally you wouldn't use a machete for fine detailed work (although it is possible). It's always best to use the right knife for the job.
So, with regards to bush craft and choosing a bush craft knife, it is important to think about what type of tasks you may need to complete with the knife. Some typical tasks that you can reasonably expect to achieve with a bush craft knife could be ; carving and shaping wood, cutting cordage, cutting and processing plant stalks, cutting meat, skinning and gutting animals and fish, foraging, hunting and more. For a closer look on how to choose a bush craft knife, please see our blog post here -
http://www.bushgear.co.uk/blogs/useful-information-and-discussions/how-to-choose-the-perfect-bush-craft-knife
So, armed with this knowledge, here is our top 10 list of bushcraft knives:
1) Mora Companion - An affordable entry level knife, with large comfortable handles, equally admired by experienced users. The companion is the successor of the Mora Clipper made famous by Ray Mears. It features a Scandinavian grind and is available in either stainless or carbon steel. It is relatively light weight making it very usable over longer periods. This knife is ideal for all manner of bush crafting tasks including light batoning (wood splitting). It is also easy to sharpen and maintain. Cost is around £11.00 making it extremely good value for money. Very little to say about this knife in terms of criticism. Get one, you won't be disappointed!
Available from us here:
http://www.bushgear.co.uk/products/strikefire-carbon-steel-companion
2) Condor Bushlore - Essentially, this is a clone of the famous Ray Mear's Woodlore knife. It features a fairly substantial 3mm thick blade with a full tang. The grind is a classic Scandi making it an ideal knife for the woods. Not the prettiest or most interesting of knives but makes for an extremely reliable no fuss companion for the woods. Steel - 1075 High Carbon.
Available from us here:
http://www.bushgear.co.uk/products/condor-bushlore-knife
3) Fallkniven F1 - The official survival knife of the Swedish air force. It has been partially designed as an escape tool to punch through aircraft fuselage, so you know it is tough! The knife features a 5mm thick blade but due to the precise convex grind, it is surprisingly good for wood work, as it tapers down very nicely. The F1 is available in several powdered steel choices including laminated VG10 and 3G. These steel are very high quality and very difficult to work with and this is reflected in the price. This one is a friend for life.
Available in the UK here:
https://alphabushcraft.com/products/fallkniven-f1-with-zytel-sheath
4) Cold Steel Pocket Bushman - As the name suggests, this is a folding knife. In fact, this is the folding version of their fixed blade knife "The Bushman".  From a safety and durability perspective, a fixed blade is nearly always going to be the smarter option. However, if you need to save space and would like something a little easier to carry, a folding knife may do the trick. The Pocket Bushman is a large folder that features a very secure and tough locking mechanism. The blade is made from a cryo quenched, German made, stainless steel and in our opinion, is top notch. We suggest this knife is suitable for a more advanced user, who is familiar with operating folding knives. Nevertheless, this is a seriously good bush tool. One for the big of hand.
Available in the UK here :
https://alphabushcraft.com/products/cold-steel-pocket-bushman-folding-knife
5) Opinel No9 Carbon - A true classic design that is reliable, practical and looks great. These French made knives have been around for over 120 years. They are available is many different sizes with a choice of premium,  stainless or carbon steel. Opinel knives feature a unique locking system which is reliable and safe and which can also be used to keep the blade in the closed position. The classic version features a Beech wood handle but other woods and materials are available. The blades are relatively thin meaning the knives are not suited to heavy duty tasks such as batoning but are excellent for whittling, carving, scoring and more. The spine of the Carbon steel blades also make for great fire steel strikers.
Available here in the UK here:
http://alphabushcraft.co.uk/folding.html
6) Helle Lapland - A very traditional Norwegian/Swedish style blade, fashioned after the Leuku design. Traditionally, this knife would have been used for game preparation, wood processing and many other camp tasks. The blade is large by most standards and is over 8 inches long, meaning the functionality borders on that of a machete. Few tasks are too much for this knife. The blade is made from cold rolled stainless steel.
Details here:
http://www.helle.no/products/knives/lappland/
7) Bison Bushcraft Woodsman Knife RWL34/G10 by Roger Harrington - Definitely not a knife for beginners due to the high price point but you do get a lot of quality and function for your money. Not too dissimilar to the famous Woodlore, the Woodsman Knife is a forest king. Features a substantial blade that feels like it could go on for ever.
Available here:
https://bisonbushcraft.co.uk/collections/available-knives/products/woodsman-knife-rwl34-g10
8) Spyderco Endura 4 - A rather left field choice for the average bush crafter. The Endura 4 is predominantly considered to be a tactical knife but we would argue that due to the steel used, the overall design and the full flat grind, it's uses reach far further afield. The blade is actually very "slicy" and travels through wood surprisingly easily whilst the back lock system provides a good level of safety.
Details here :
9) Mora Bushcraft - Mora have been making knives for over 125 years, specifically for outdoor tasks. It is no surprise therefore, that we had to include another of their great designs. The Mora Bushcraft features a 3.2mm spine so is more suited to heavier tasks as compared with the Mora Companion (see above). It is equally good at finer, more detailed work. Overall, bearing in mind steel choice, design, handle, aesthetic and functionality, this is probably the best value, true bushcraft knife on the list.
Available here:
http://www.bushgear.co.uk/products/mora-bushcraft-black
10) The Jacklore Knife - Established in 2012, Sandy has been making and perfecting his "Jacklore" for well over 5 years. It has been specifically designed for the art of bush craft and is an ideal companion for the woods, valleys and moors. Very high attention to detail and craftsmanship throughout. Sandy only turnsout a knife when he completely satisfied with every aspect of the build. He only makes an average of 2-3 knives per week.
Available directly from Sandy here:
http://www.jacklore.com/
And finally...
11) The Ray Mears Woodlore - Generally thought of as the pinnacle of bush craft knives, the Woodlore was designed by Ray Mears and British knife maker Stephen Wade Cox. The Woodlore has now been replaced by the "Ray Mears Bushcraft Knife". The Bushcraft Knife is made from 01 high carbon tool steel and is definitely a tool for life.
Available here:
https://www.raymears.com/Bushcraft_Product/743-The-Ray-Mears-Bushcraft-Knife/
So, which is the best knife for bush craft? The one that suits your usage style the most AND... the one you have with you!
Happy hunting!

Top 10 pieces of Bushcraft equipment
Check out this Guide for 10 Essential Bushcraft items
A strong set of bushcraft equipment can be essential on a trip of any type or length. You’ll need to make sure all the kit you bring will be useful at some point as well, otherwise you’ll be carrying unnecessary equipment, adding extra space and weight that could be avoided. This guide is designed to ensure you will only be carrying useful and necessary items that you will be used regularly on your trip.
As an organisation that has worked with UK preppers guide and Jack Raven Bushcraft, we have gained an understanding as to some of the best pieces of equipment for a bushcraft trip.
  Head-torch
One piece of equipment that will likely become very useful during your trip is a head torch. Being able to see in the dark is simply a must so you will need some form of light.
The, perhaps slightly obvious, advantage to having a head torch over just a standard torch is that you can use the torch with both of your hands free. This makes things like setting up your camp or starting a fire much easier as you’ll have two hands as well as the light to see what you’re doing.
  Water Filter Bottle
Having access to clean water is another essential when out in the wild and the boiling process can be a very time-consuming exercise. A much more time efficient method is using a filter water bottle for your drinking water.
The Water-to-Go filter bottle has been proven to filter out well over 99.9% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source. This means you can safely drink from any river, lake or stream without risking illness. Additionally, this will save you time as you won’t have to take the time to boil water before it’s drinkable.
  First-aid kit
A first-aid kit of some kind can be crucial in the outdoors. This is because if even the smallest cut were to become infected it can have drastic consequences. A good first aid kit will prevent this eventuality.
A great way to make the most of your first aid kit is to create your own personalised kit. By doing this you’ll be able to prepare for the specific challenges that you’ll be facing on your trip. Whilst creating your own is a great idea, there are some essential items you should include, these being plasters, antiseptic wipes/ cream, paracetamol, scissors as well as any prescription medicine you normally take.
  Specialised Bushcraft Knife
A knife will most likely be one of your most used items during your trip. It will also be vital for getting the materials from starting a fire. For this reason, it’s important to get a knife that is able to do the jobs you need it to.
Bushcraft specific knives are widely available online, some good examples being ‘the wolverine’ and ‘the nomad’ knives. These should do a good job in terms of creating the shavings and feather sticks you need to start a fire, assuming you have had some experience using a knife for fire starting.
  Fire-starting equipment: Ferro Rod
Once you’ve got the basic materials to start your fire, you’ll need something to create the initial spark. A great piece of kit for starting a fire is a ferrocerium (or Ferro) rod.
These are essentially rods in which you can swipe your knife across and it will create sparks. The rods are made up of a substance called Ferrocerium which is composed of an alloy of rare-earth metals called mischmetal (containing iron, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, magnesium and lanthanum). It’s, therefore, a great piece of equipment for starting your fires.
  Rucksack or backpack for Bushcraft
A Rucksack is an essential item for carrying all the other equipment that you’ll be using along your journey. Additionally, having the right backpack is important for any bushcraft trip as you’ll need something that is relatively lightweight, durable and will fit all the kit you will be taking.
5.11 are a company that makes a range of ‘tactical’ backpacks that are designed specifically for the outdoors and are great for a bushcraft trip. They are well thought out rucksacks that effectively balance aspects like durability, storage space and weight to provide a brilliant piece of kit. 5.11 are a US-based company however, you can get your hands on their backpacks from The Bushcraft Store.
  Navigation Equipment: Compass
Carrying a compass on you is a great form of navigation and a great way to find your bearings. Also due to the size of a compass, it will take up almost no space and very little weight when carrying it with you.
A compass also has advantages over other forms of navigation such as a map. Firstly, it’s much more convenient to use as you won’t be folding up and unfolding every time you need to give yourself an idea of where you are. Additionally, a compass is much more durable as you don’t have to worry about ripping or damaging it as much as you would with a map.
  Suitable Clothing and Walking Boots
Taking appropriate clothing will be important as it will make your trip much easier and more comfortable. With the amount of walking you’ll be doing, the most important clothing piece will be your shoes.
Getting yourself some specialised walking boots will be greatly beneficial and something your feet will be thanking you for after a long day of trekking. You can pick up a range of walking boots from the Go Outdoors online store. They have a variety of boots, providing you with great value for money and excellent boots equipped for tough terrain.
  Tarp Sheet
One big problem for bushcraft enthusiasts in this country is the UK’s weather. As I’m sure you’re aware, even during summer months there’s a very real chance you’ll encounter some rainy weather.
For this reason, you’ll need a tarp to keep you, your equipment and your fire nice and dry. Finding yourself a lightweight tarp will be helpful for your journey as you won’t need to add any unnecessary weight to the equipment you’re already carrying.
  Sleeping Equipment
On your bushcraft journey, your sleep will be extremely important as you’ll need to be conserving all the energy you can during your rest periods. The two most common methods we’ve found for sleep is using either a sleeping bag or a hammock, both of which are effective means of getting your well-needed rest.
If you decide to go with a sleeping bag, make sure to prioritise comfort as you’ll be sleeping on the tough ground. You may also want to combine your sleeping bag with a sleeping mat to make sure you’re able to get a better nights sleep. If you go for the alternative of a hammock, make sure when you’re setting up to choose two sturdy trees or other objects to attach to. You certainly wouldn’t want your bed to collapse in the middle of the night!

Description:

This book is loaded with proven strategies, tips, and years of experience that you won’t find anywhere else!
I’m certain the information in this book will do a lot to increase your chances of becoming a Professional Hunter in Africa.
Steve and Susan are to be congratulated on an original and innovative contribution to the industry.”

    eBook by Steve Robinson

Ferrocerium fire starters, like the StrikeFire, have become a fundamental tool in bushcraft, as they are the most dependable means of lighting a fire with sparks, regardless of weather conditions. Unlike a box of matches or a cigarette lighter, the StrikeFire fire starter can light literally thousands of fires, 12,000 for this Large version. At 3,000 degrees Celsius, the sparks from a StrikeFire will light a huge range of natural and man-made tinders, including gas and petrol camping stoves. The StrikeFire is a new British made product using the best ferrocerium rod available, a hardened steel scraper and reflective paracord lanyard. #bushcraft #bushcrafters #bushcrafting #bushcrafter #prepper #survival #survivalist #survivor #woodsman #outdoorsman #bushcraftuk #bushcraftgear #outdoorgear #survivalgear #camping #wildcamping #wildcampinguk #ferrorod #firestarter #firekit #firestarterkit #prepareforadventure https://www.instagram.com/p/BstHBlVh06W/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=oaosqky1idgr

Survive Uk Prepper Shop
Tumblr media
Hi guys just a quick post going over our aims for the year. You may have noticed that we have our Uk Prepper Shop up and running and we have scoured the web in search of the best kit available. I left the ‘Under Construction’ tag up when it was actually ready but that’s fixed now. We will be adding more items (and removing some bad ones) over time as and when we find them but, we are currently limited by it being an affiliate Uk Prepper Shop. Once we have everything up and running we will be looking to start selling our own products but, this won’t be happening for a month or two.
Here is a list of our current work in progress:
More product reviews
Site blog (what me and the Sgt. Prepper get up to while we are out in world)
Video reviews
Theme update and redesign
Affiliate uk prepper shop
More general prepping
More prepper DIY
Giveaways !
Tumblr media
More knife reviews coming soon !
There are a couple of things I have left out as I want them to remain a surprise, but we aim to go into maximum gear over the summer. I will be looking to get out and about with Sgt. Prepper and wild camping as much as possible.
We are working on some survival tins and bracelets and there’s also some designs going between us on a ‘SurviveUK Knife’. We want some sort of survival/bushcraft blade because the Sarge has been dying to design his own blade for years. That will be available once we have done some thorough testing and if we are lucky we can rope in a special knife maker for us who we’ve been in contact with over the last few months.
