Cincinnati Barbers Of Old: Shave And A Haircut, Plus Dentistry, Surgery & Leeches
There are not many old-time barbers left in Cincinnati, probably none at all. Before you start pointing out some venerable tonsorial establishment boasting a marble counter, leather chairs, a stack of vintage magazines and a painted barber pole out front, ask just one question: Is there a jar of leeches in the front window?
Back in the day, your barber did a heck of a lot more than shaves and haircuts. Barber shops were very much like urgent care centers. The inimitable Edwin Henderson, who wrote under the penname “Conteur,” described [Enquirer, 10 July 1919] the experience of a German immigrant barber named Peter Muschler:
“In those days, many of the white barbers cupped and leeched and pulled teeth in addition to shaving and hair dressing. Muschler used as many as 6,000 leeches in a year. For several years after their arrival the broils of rival fire companies of the old schools of volunteers and of the contending factions of the ‘Brighton,’ ‘Mohawk’ and ‘Texas’ districts, and the use of fists generally in all sorts of personal differences were so frequent that leeches were in general demand all over the city.”
A generation raised on the belief that the best cure for a black eye is a bag of frozen peas probably can’t understand that paragraph. To clarify: Leeches were applied to black eyes and other bruises to drain the accumulated blood and to reduce swelling. Cupping, popular today as an alternative therapy, was practiced by barbers as a cure for fevers and general aches and pains. Minor surgical tasks such as these provided solid income at a time when, as the old knocking rhyme has it, a shave and a haircut cost two bits, or just twenty-five cents. An old-time barber told the Enquirer [19 August 1900]:
“The revenue derived from this work also provided quite a substantial amount in our pockets at the end of each week during those days. I remember that frequently I made not less than $25 cupping, bleeding and leeching while the proceeds from teeth extracted also provided a nice little sum.”
Conteur reports that barber Peter Muschler also did a fair amount of tooth pulling. When Muschler moved his shop in 1865, he disposed of a peck (about two gallons) of extracted teeth by tossing them into the furnace.
So closely were barbers associated with surgery that, according to the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine [October 2001], it was Henry VIII of England who in 1540 recognized the Worshipful Company of Barbers and Surgeons, affirming the right of barbers to perform bloodletting and tooth extraction, while prohibiting surgeons from cutting hair or trimming beards.
Of course, dealing with rowdy patients fresh from barroom brawls must have tried the patience of many a barber, no matter how royally worshipped. A Cincinnati barber named Christopher Eberle discovered this one fateful night. According to the Cincinnati Gazette [25 January 1879]:
“Wm. Nielis, a hostler living on Boal street, and James Toale, living at 434 Sycamore street, came into Dr. C.C. Eberle’s barber shop, No. 388 Broadway, about 9 o’clock last night. Toale was in a pitiable condition. Both of his eyes were closed, his face cut up and bloody, and his lips swollen so big as to prevent the man from speaking. They asked for some leeches, but when Eberle asked for his pay the couple assaulted him and made trouble all around. Eberle called in the police, who took the men to the Bremen Street Station. They fought the officers all the way to the lockup. The charges against the men are disorderly conduct, personal violence, and assault and battery.”
The connection between barbering and blood is memorialized in the traditional barber pole with its red, white and blue stripes. According to lore, the red symbolizes arteries and the blue represent veins, while the white indicates skin. It’s more likely that the stripes are a sanitized version of the ancient barber signs that showed a realistically bleeding arm. Some really old barber signs were topped by a golden bowl of the type once sued to collect blood.
Eventually, barbers got out of the surgical line. The Cincinnati Post [1 December 1927] reported on an emergency appeal for leeches to save the life of a sleeping-sickness victim in Somerville, Ohio. The physician treating the patient believed that applying leeches would keep the patient’s blood circulating until the effects of the disease had subsided. Boy Scouts in Cincinnati took up the cause and sloshed through every creek and river around the city in a fruitless quest for blood-sucking annelids. Having exhausted the natural habitats of the creatures, the scouts turned to their urban haunts.
“In Cincinnati Scouts scoured local drug stores for leeches. Late Saturday ‘ran down’ some in a small downtown barber shop, where they were kept as reminiscences of the old days when barbers also were physicians, and are still used occasionally for blackened eyes. The leeches were sent by special delivery to Somerville.”
The patient’s condition improved remarkably.
Some barbers extended their services into less bloody ministrations, according to William C. Smith in his delightful 1959 memoir, “Queen City Yesterdays”:
“Barber shops of the better class provided another service in addition to their regular vocation of shaving and haircutting. These shops displayed signs in the window reading ‘Baths Twenty-five Cents.’ The regular price for shaving was fifteen cents; for hair cutting, twenty-five cents; and tips were unknown.”
There were certainly a lot of barbers in old Cincinnati. An article in The Penny Paper (later to be known as the Cincinnati Post) [5 July 1882] provided a census broken down by the ancestry of each proprietor. According to that article, Cincinnati had 1,000 barbers, of which 795 were of German extraction, 91 were African American, 50 were Irish, 46 were “Americans by blood and birth,” five English, four Jews, four Italians, three Scots, and two Frenchmen. The city population that year was just over 225,000.
Some of these tonsorial practitioners were very curious indeed. An old-timer told the Penny Paper that he knew of an excellent barber who was totally blind but had learned his trade as his sight was failing and was renowned for his skill. There was a one-armed barber working in Covington who also had a sterling reputation.

nora eloise hastings (bailey), forty three
nora is the daughter of parents who ran off together to get married at sixteen and the granddaughter of people who also ran off at sixteen so she would just like a little more credit for the fact that she at least was seventeen.
she’s the first to say that her parents were idiots. she was born in raleigh and spent the first ten years of her life being alternately smothered, ignored, or dropped off with her maternal grandparents in chapel hill. isaac and etta barber gave her some sense of stability and when she was dropped off with them for the last time at age ten, it was the best thing for her.
she hasn’t seen much of them since, just here and there for holidays as a kid and they never met hank or the kids. her mother died three years ago and her father sent her a note to tell her and that’s been about it ever since.
her grandparents meant very well and, as an adult who’s raised two kids, she sees that now. she was used to being left to her own devices though and suddenly having a bedtime and chores and having to go to church was ridiculous. she chafed and gave them hell when the fight felt worth it but was, at the end of the day, a reasonably good kid.
being pretty always felt like it was going to be her way out. she comes from a long line of knock outs and as a teenager, she figured she could parlay that into…something. never mind that as far as marketable talents, she was kind of shit out of luck but she'd figure that out later if she needed to.
hank hastings wasn't her first foray into romance as a form of teen rebellion - she wasn't supposed to be dating at all but that went in one ear and out the other. her grandparents had the audacity to like him and approve but just had their restrictions. nora would just like to point to john's existence as an example of how easy those were to get around with a will and a way (the will was being horny and seventeen, the way was the back stairs and jumping the last two steps because they squeaked).
the barbers were a lot less approving when nora was the third in line to get pregnant as a teenager but hank didn't bolt, even if nora kind of wanted to. obviously, with hank because frankly, she would have preferred just about anything in the world instead of telling his parents and her grandparents. it all worked itself out is how she ends that chapter of the story when she's telling it. they got married and she left school before she was showing and they had john right before she turned eighteen. he went to west point and she spent that first year going stir crazy living with her in-laws.
it wasn't all bad to start - in fact, she has a lot of good memories. being a wife and mother has (was) always been fulfilling for her. she's happiest when she has people to take care of and tend to. with john and violet out of the house, she volunteers a lot through the red cross and has the best victory garden on the block. once they were settled on a base, nora had friends and had ingratiated herself with whoever the hell it was they needed to ingratiate themselves with cute kids, a great family pie recipe, and a big smile.
violet was a little more planned than john and she was older so she thought it would be different or easier. it was definitely different - the crushing anxiety after violet was born made her feel like she was losing her mind but they were just getting settled in texas and she didn't have much of anyone to lean on. her grandmother just told her it would take some time to get her pink back now that she was older and she couldn't explain it to hank because he had a million things going on outside of the family. the home was her job and she decided putting herself back together was part of that. she doesn't know how she managed, only that she did.
she loves her children and there's nothing she wouldn't do for john or violet but she is very, very glad to have only them.
the days? long. the years? very short. all of the sudden, john was a teenager and violet was making medicines out of every liquid in the house. in the same week, her grandmother died and hank announced the transfer to puerto rico. if it had been one or the other, she imagines she would have managed to get through but both at the same time was her breaking point. she needed time and knew from experience that that wasn't something she was going to get. so she went back to chapel hill for the funeral and stayed there.
in retrospect, she knows that she probably could have been just a little bit more diplomatic about it but was also in absolutely no frame of mind to be diplomatic one last time. nora is a woman of unlimited grace and chances but she's also stubborn once she digs her heels in and she meant it when she said she wasn't moving again.
she built a life for herself and the kids in chapel hill in the house she grew up in and she's proud of herself for that. she has to be proud of herself because sometimes, it feels like she's the only one who is. she got the back steps fixed so they didn't squeak, cried when john graduated, cried again when violet got a scholarship to duke and turned twenty without even glancing at the notion of becoming pregnant as a teenager. if she questions her decisions in the middle of the night, she doesn't question her children. they're the best things she'll ever do.
nora is warm and charming and has always been generous with her time and affection. her door is always open to anyone who needs it and she's quick to take in anyone and anything that needs help. she especially makes it her business to seek out the new mothers in her neighborhood that need a hand because she remembers all too well how hard it is.
sometimes, she feels very old and then remembers she's barely forty three. it's been a lot of life and she's finally starting to feel comfortable with herself. she's never really been on her own before and there are days that it feels lonely and days that it feels like freedom. her time is her own for the first time and sometimes she's glad there's a war on so she has ample volunteer opportunities to keep her busy.

DOES AFRICAN HAIR BRAIDING REQUIRE A COSMETOLOGY LICENSE?
It might be challenging to generate the best possibilities for employment or business startup in a challenging economic climate. Offering African hair braiding services is one method that draws plenty of customers. The average nail salon products wholesale annual salary for this position, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is $27,940.
However, even if they don't use any chemicals or offer any other services, these business owners often find that they need to obtain a cosmetology license. The reason for this is that despite not using the same products, providing the same services, or receiving training from conventional beauty schools, the profession is frequently lumped in with hair stylists, barbers, and cosmetologists.
1. Is a License Required?
The laws governing the licensing requirements for cosmetology services, such as African hair braiding, are determined by the different states. So, in order to find out if you need a license, you must verify with your state. Normally, passing a state exam and completing 1600 hours of dnd fall colors cosmetology training at an approved school are needed to obtain a license. Even though this training is crucial for individuals interested in traditional cosmetology employment, those who merely want to offer natural braiding services see these requirements as a waste of time and money, especially because the majority of schools do not teach braiding techniques.
2. Where can hair braiding without a license be practiced?
Eleven states, according to Braiding Freedom, do not require natural hair braiders to have licenses. The requirements for licenses in the remaining 39 states and the District of Columbia range in length from six hours to more than 2000. The Institute of Justice has filed a number of legal actions to get the license requirements in these 39 states overturned.
According to Watchdog.org, Salamata Sylla's lawsuit against the state of Washington in June 2014 was one such instance. In response to her case, the state is implementing an earlier policy that exempts hair braiders from the need nail tech supplies wholesale for a license. A similar law exempting natural braiding from license requirements was recently approved in Texas as well. There is a major movement to abolish the license restrictions for African hair braiding, as seen by the lawsuits that are currently pending in Missouri and Arkansas. Many people could be able to take advantage of this opportunity to offer these services without attending cosmetology school.

With Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations spiking around the country, dreams of a summer like those many us had in mind just a short time ago have faded.
The fully vaccinated have been told to resume wearing masks indoors. Companies and institutions are leveling vaccine mandates. And some municipalities are requiring people to show proof of vaccination to get into restaurants, bars, and gyms.
Confusion abounds about what is safe to do. (For the unvaccinated, there’s no confusion about what’s most important to do: Get immunized.)
To try to cut through the fog, STAT contacted three dozen epidemiologists, immunologists, and other infectious disease experts around the country to see how they are navigating the risk of Covid in these uncertain times. Twenty-eight responded.
STAT didn’t ask these experts to explain how they would advise others. Rather, we asked them to answer 10 questions — saying yes, no or only if masked — about their own willingness to engage in various activities, assuming they were vaccinated.
Their answers suggest that, with the highly transmissible Delta variant spreading, caution prevails. Those who know viruses best aren’t buying many movie tickets, and most aren’t eating indoors in restaurants.
But in other ways, responses diverged. And at least one expert suggested that geography really does matter when it comes to his own comfort level. Naor Bar-Zeev, a statistical epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, declined to respond to all but one of the questions, saying answers are highly dependent on the circumstances of a place.
“In a place where most people are unvaccinated, or otherwise at high risk, and where there is active transmission, I should act more conservatively and with greater caution, even though I am protected from disease,” he said. “In a place where most people are vaccinated, and there is low transmission, one can be more permissive.”
Let’s unpack their answers.
Of the questions, only one earned a unanimous response: “Would you send your unvaccinated child to school without a mask?”
“Lord, no,” Paul Offit, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, replied. “NO!!! As a parent and a pediatrician, that is a terrible idea,” wrote Andrew Pavia, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Utah.
None of 27 people who answered this question expressed a willingness to send an unvaccinated child to school without a mask. Carlos del Rio, a professor of epidemiology and global health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, said he’d withdraw an unvaccinated child from a school if it didn’t have a mask mandate.
Children under the age of 12 cannot yet be vaccinated as none of the vaccines has been authorized for use in this age group.
The other school-related question — “Would you send your vaccinated teen to school without a mask?” — drew almost as fervent a response, with 24 of 26 saying no.
Ellen Foxman, an immunologist at Yale University, was one of the exceptions. “Yes, if the high school had a high vaccination rate/low Covid transmission rate and my family had no high-risk personal contacts,” she wrote. “If the school required all students and staff to be vaccinated, I would have no problem whatsoever with no masks.”
Pavia gave a nuanced answer for his support for masks for vaccinated teens. “If the vaccinated kids don’t mask, the unvaccinated are unlikely to mask and there is a risk of bullying. Masks for all is much more likely to work,” he wrote.
Michael Osterholm, director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, said he not only wouldn’t allow a vaccinated teen to go to school without a mask, he’d demand the teen wear an N-95 respirator. Cloth face coverings aren’t enough to combat Delta, he insisted.
Shane Crotty, an immunologist at La Jolla Institute of Immunology, said he’d send teenagers to school with masks, but would be okay with them taking them off around friends outside of school or during an outdoor lunch break.
When the experts were asked whether they would eat indoors at a restaurant, responses were slightly more mixed. More than half of respondents said no, but six said they would, or would in off-peak hours, and three more said they would do it but would wear a mask when they weren’t eating.
Saad Omer, director of Yale’s Institute for Global Health, said he would eat indoors in a restaurant that required customers to show proof of vaccination. “I generally feel safe indoors in a restaurant as long as underlying community transmission is low and I’m eating with other vaccinated people,” wrote John Brownstein, an epidemiologist and chief innovation officer at Boston Children’s Hospital. “However, I always prioritize eating outside where possible.”
That approach no longer seems viable to Syra Madad, senior director for the special pathogens program in the NYC Health + Hospitals network. “More than 95% of Americans live in areas of high or substantial community transmission so it’s no longer a matter of ‘Yes, I’ll eat indoors if I’m in an area of low community transmission,’” she wrote.
It seems like we’re over DIY hair — or so the answers to the question of whether the experts would go to a hairdresser or a barber shop would suggest.
All but four respondents said they would go to a hair salon or barber at this point even if they didn’t know the vaccination status of other clients. And even one of the four more cautious respondents allowed that she might consider it. “No, but if we are all far apart and there are few people I might with a mask,” said Krutika Kuppalli, an infectious disease physician at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Most people who said yes did so with the caveat that they’d wear a mask. Jesse Goodman, a professor of medicine at Georgetown University, said he would go only if he and everyone else in the place was masked. Akiko Iwasaki, a Yale University immunologist, said she would try to reduce the frequency of visits. But Jeanne Marrazzo, director of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, was in favor of professional hair care in general.
“I know how careful my hairdresser has been,” Marrazzo wrote. “She also needs financial support; my hair also needs it.”
Would the experts go to the theater to see a film? Seventeen said no.
“Non-essential,” said Shweta Bansal, whose Georgetown University laboratory studies how social behavior affects infectious disease transmission.
Florian Krammer, an immunologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in Manhattan, believes most people who are fully vaccinated are well protected at this point. He would go to see a movie wearing a mask.
Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician and a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, has a different view on Covid risks than some of the other people STAT polled. He (and others) believe Covid is going to become endemic — we’re going to have to learn to live with it. For fully vaccinated people, Adalja said, the risks even from contracting Covid are pretty low.
“That fact makes me comfortable as a fully vaccinated individual without underlying health problems to resume my pre-pandemic life because I am risk-tolerant and I know that if I am to get a breakthrough infection it is likely to be mild,” he said. Adalja said yes to all but two of STAT’s questions; he would not send an unvaccinated child to school without a mask and would not currently give a second dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
William Hanage, an epidemiologist in Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said he’d happily skip going to the movies, but his wife enjoys going. So he would go, wearing a mask.
There was almost an even split among the experts to the question of whether they would attend a large outdoor concert or sporting event, with a slight edge going to the “yes” side. Most of the 15 people said they’d do it if masked.
Robert Wachter, the chair of the University of California, San Francisco’s department of medicine, said he’d don a mask “if shouting people [were] at very close range.” Jason Salemi, an epidemiologist at the University of South Florida, said he “would not attend a large outdoor concert right now,” stressing the amount of Covid transmission in his state at the moment.
Move a mass gathering indoors and the answers shift. In response to the question of whether they would go to an indoor wedding or other religious service — one where they did not know the vaccination status of the other attendees — more of the experts said no.
Saskia Popescu, an infectious disease specialist and assistant professor in George Mason University’s biodefense program, for instance, would go to an outdoor concert or sporting event, masked. Even with a mask, she would not attend an indoor wedding or religious ceremony.
Emergency physician Uché Blackstock, founder and CEO of the consulting firm Advancing Health Equity, said she’d forgo indoor and outdoor large gatherings at this point.
We asked two questions about travel: “Would you travel to a part of the United States experiencing a surge in Covid cases?” and “Would you go on a non-essential international trip?” Surprisingly, there was slightly more willingness in the group to travel internationally than to domestic Covid hot spots.
In response to the former, Peter Hotez was succinct. “I’m living it,” said the Hotez, co-director of the Texas Children’s Center for Vaccine Development, based in Houston-swamped Covid-19.
Del Rio, who lives in Atlanta, goes frequently to Miami to visit his son and his son’s family. “I am very careful when I travel,” he said. Since the pandemic began he has twice visited his mother in Mexico, “but at this point I am not going. May go later in the year,” he wrote.
Carl Bergstrom, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Washington, said he wouldn’t travel abroad now. Not because of Covid directly, but because he might get stuck somewhere if travel restrictions were instituted. Hanage and his family vacationed on Cape Cod this year instead of taking a planned trip to Iceland, for the same reason.
Nahid Bhadelia, director of Boston University’s Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Policy & Research, said she would not travel to an American Covid hot zone if she could avoid it, but would travel internationally, if her destination had a high vaccination rate and a low transmission rate.
Angela Rasmussen, a coronavirus virologist at the University of Saskatchewan’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization, said she would travel to a location in the U.S. having an upswing in Covid transmission, but would do it using precautions. As for international travel, “depends where, but masked,” she said.
Our final question was for the physicians in the group was this: “Would you recommend that patients who received the one-dose J&J vaccine get another dose of vaccine?”
Crotty, the immunologist at La Jolla Institute of Immunology, said yes; he tweeted recently about his support for giving J&J recipients an extra dose of vaccine to cope with the Delta variant. “I have had physicians emailing me thanks about my [Twitter] threads on this,” he said.
Megan Ranney, an emergency physician at Lifespan Health System in Providence, R.I., said she’s waiting for guidance from the Food and Drug Administration. “But in the meantime, I certainly wouldn’t judge anyone who does get another dose.”
And Helen Keipp Talbot, a vaccine researcher at Vanderbilt University, pleaded the Fifth. Talbot is a member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which advises the CDC on vaccination policy. “No comment,” was her reply.

Young Sheldon to Air TBS
WarnerMedia has announced that Young Sheldon will be airing on TBS following the current season:
LOS ANGELES (August 17, 2021) – TBS inks acquisition deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for the hit Warner Bros. Television comedy “Young Sheldon.” The series will make its debut on TBS on Monday, September 27 at 5:00pm ET/PT. “Young Sheldon” joins TBS’ line-up of fan-favorite and best-in-class series including WBTV’s “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory,” the longest-running multicamera comedy in television history.
Brett Weitz, General Manager, TBS, TNT and truTV said: “The Warner Bros. Domestic TV library has been wonderfully successful for our networks from ‘Friends’ to ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Young Sheldon’ is a natural addition that is going to enhance more opportunities for consumers to sit back and laugh.”
“Young Sheldon” is the number one comedy on network television with total viewers, Adults 18–49 and 25–54. The series averaged 9.5 million viewers per week during the 2020–21 television season (9,450,000 actual P2+), according to Most Current ratings information from Nielsen. “Young Sheldon” premiered on CBS in 2017 and was the most-watched comedy debut in 15 years. The series recently concluded its fourth season and has been renewed by CBS for an additional three seasons.
For 12 years on “The Big Bang Theory,” audiences came to know the iconic, eccentric and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. The single-camera, half-hour comedy “Young Sheldon” gives viewers the chance to meet him in childhood, as he embarks on his innocent, awkward and hopeful journey toward the man he will become.
For young Sheldon Cooper, it isn’t easy growing up in East Texas. Being a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science isn’t always helpful in a land where church and football are king. And while the vulnerable, gifted and somewhat naïve Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him. His father, George, is struggling to find his way as a high school football coach and as father to a boy he doesn’t understand. Sheldon’s mother, Mary, fiercely protects and nurtures her son in a town where he just doesn’t fit in. Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie, does the best he can in high school, but it’s tough to be cool when you’re in the same classes with your odd 9-year-old brother. Finally, there’s Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy, who sometimes resents all the attention Sheldon gets, but also remains the one person who can reliably tell Sheldon the truth.
From Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, “Young Sheldon” is distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. The series stars Iain Armitage as Young Sheldon, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, with Annie Potts, and Jim Parsons as the voice of Sheldon. Chuck Lorre & Steven Molaro created the show and serve as executive producers with Steve Holland, Jim Parsons and Todd Spiewak. About TBS TBS, a WarnerMedia brand, is a top-rated destination for television among young adults and known for escapist, lean-in entertainment, featuring smart, imaginative stories with heart and comedic edge. From scripted comedy series to late-night shows, game shows, and animated programming, TBS’ Originals slate is comprised of some of the most popular shows on cable — “Miracle Workers,” “CONAN,” ”Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” ”The Last O.G.,” ”American Dad!” and ”Chad.” The network’s slate of premium unscripted series includes “The Misery Index,” “Go-Big Show,” and fan favorite “Wipeout,” along with, new series “Friday Night Vibes” and “The Cube” and upcoming series, “The Big D”. TBS’ lineup also includes comedy hits like ”Family Guy” and ”The Big Bang Theory,” classic sitcom favorites ”Friends” and ”Seinfeld,” blockbuster movies, and live event coverage of Major League Baseball, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship and “ELEAGUE,” WarnerMedia’s eSports gaming competition. The McConnell siblings
Heather Miyuki McConnell
Rustling Pines Elementary, Lakewood Michigan, 1999 (school picture)
Date of birth: June 17, 1990
Place of birth: Lakewood, Michigan
Parents: Michael and Kazuko (Ito) McConnell
Siblings: Jason Hideaki McConnell, Jess Akiko McConnell
Spouse: Andrei Alexandrovitch Nazarbayev
Children: Annika Jessalyn, Lilia Isabelle
Place of residence: Sun Valley, Texas
Occupation: bookkeeper, Ladd & Company (furloughed due to COVID)
Education: Lakeview Ridge High School, class of 2008; licensed bookkeeper, Fairfield Community College; attended University of Kansas for 2 years, majoring in journalism
Hobbies: writing, yoga
Q: What was your dream job when you were a kid, and how did you become interested in it?
“I wanted to be a journalist since I was about 10, I think? My parents watched a lot of news and documentaries, and I was fascinated by the reporters and narrators. I took my first journalism and yearbook courses in middle and high school. It sounded exciting – I wanted to be able to go to exotic locations and report on what I found. I suppose I wanted to be famous, too. What girl doesn’t want to be?”
Q: How did you and your significant other meet?
“I met Andrei in one of our required freshman courses at U of K, I can’t remember which. He was kind of nerdy-but-sweet looking, with crazy long eyelashes behind his glasses. I thought he would be shy, but he asked me out while we were working on our first group project. We’ve been inseparable ever since!”
Q: Why didn’t you finish college?
“I didn’t finish college because life got in the way. Pregnancy, marriage…suddenly we had 2 babies and just couldn’t keep up!”
Q: Do you regret your choice?
“My family is my life. I would rather have them over a degree any day, no matter how hard it is. Even though it’s been hard not to have the income, I have been glad to have more time to spend with my girls.”
Q: What is your most ardent wish?
“I wish my parents were closer. Andrei’s parents live next door and it’s wonderful, but I’d like to see my parents and brother and sister more often. I’m going to be an auntie and I’m not sure when I’ll get to meet my niece or nephew, and I’m afraid my sister’s graduation may have to be online. I really want to be there for those things.”
Jason Hideaki McConnell
Rustling Pines Elementary, Lakewood Michigan, 2002 (school picture)
Date of birth: October 3, 1993
Place of birth: Lakewood, Michigan
Parents: Mike and Kazuko (Ito) McConnell
Siblings: Heather Miyuki Nazarbayev, Jess Akiko McConnell
Spouse: Laura Katherine Barber
Children: unknown, due May 2021
Place of residence: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Occupation: architect, Goliath Construction (furloughed due to COVID)
Education: Lakeview Ridge High School, class of 2010; Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, University of Utah; Master’s degree in architecture, Washington State University
Hobbies: skiing, snowboarding, hockey, soccer, hiking
“I like art, and geometry, and useful things. Architecture pays better than being a PE coach or shop teacher somewhere, and most of the time we can go on vacation and do all the sports Laura and I love.”
“Winter break, 2011. I was in Utah, snowboarding at Snowbird, and this other snowboarder was showboating, so I started showing off and, like the idiots we were, kept trying to one-up each other. I ended up crashing, breaking my ankle AND dislocating my shoulder. I didn’t even know she was the guy I had been competing with until the next day, when we ran into each other on the bus back to campus and she offered to buy me drinks as a way of apologizing. She’s a knockout, quite literally, and 5’11” to boot. Best worst date ever.”
“I’ve got it pretty good. I don’t know what I’d wish for. Olympic gold in snowboarding. Yeah.”
Jess Akiko McConnell
Place of birth: Lakewood, Michigan
Parents: Mike and Kazuko (Ito) McConnell
Siblings: Heather Miyuki Nazarbayev, Jason Hideaki McConnell
Spouse: engaged, Henry David Campbell
Children: none
Place of residence: Lakewood, Michigan
Occupation: student, pursuing doctorate in marine ecology, University of California (on hiatus due to COVID)
Education: Lakeview Ridge High School, class of 2014; Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in marine biology, University of Texas at Galveston
Hobbies: soccer, snowboarding, wildlife rescue volunteer
“My parents took me to Belize with them when I was ten, and although we were there for an archaeological dig, I ended up taking care of this orphaned baby parrot. That got me interested in animals, and tropical wildlife, and then ocean life, and now here I am.”
“He was my TA while I was an undergrad. We didn’t start dating until the following year, when he wasn’t anymore, but I’m pretty sure everybody knew. We flirted kind of a lot.”
“I wish I could explain…or just have people understand and stop the damage we are doing to the world. Millions of tons of garbage, plastics, in the ocean, corporations spewing out carbon and chemicals… It doesn’t just affect others. It’s all of us. It’s you. It’s me. It’s the animals, the marine life, it’s everything. We’re driving ourselves to extinction.”
I tried to make Heather’s and Jason’s photos accurate to the late 90s. We had laser backgrounds for our school pictures back then, and Heather’s bangs are similar to what girls would have worn. Since they’re pictured as elementary schoolers, I dressed them how a parent might have, instead of in the grunge or baggy styles.
Some parts of the photos are edited, and the one of Jess is not mine.
Also, he’s not a McConnell, but Heather’s husband (and Annika and Lily’s dad), so I did one for Andrei, too.
Andrei Alexandrovitch Nazarbayev
Houston Texas, 1998
Date of birth: April 26, 1990
Place of birth: Moscow, Russia
Parents: Alexander Mikhailovitch Nazarbayev and Anna Sergeievna (Semyonova) Nazarbayeva
Siblings: none
Spouse: Heather Miyuki McConnell
Children: Annika Jessalyn, Lilia Isabelle
Place of residence: Sun Valley, Texas
Occupation: linesman, Satterfield Energy
Education: West Caddo High School, class of 2008; attended University of Kansas for 2 years, majoring in engineering and piano performance
Hobbies: drawing, piano, biking
“Ever since I can remember, I wanted to an engineer. And a famous pianist. I never could make up my mind. I was actually supposed to be majoring in piano because I had a piano scholarship, but I ended up being more interested in engineering. There’s this beauty in mathematics, and it’s hard to explain to most people, because they think math is hard. It’s beautiful, and orderly.”
“I met Heather in our mandatory US history class. She sat at the front, and I sat at the back. When she walked in, she had this glow, you know? I knew she was the one but couldn’t figure out how to approach her until we were put together for a group project. I knew it was then or never, so I asked her out and she said yes.”
“I never got my degree because I met the girl of my dreams, and when I had to choose between her and our family, or school, I chose her. How could I regret that?”
“It would have been nice to finish, and we’ve talked about my going back to school once this whole pandemic is past, now that our girls are able to take care of themselves a bit. My parents have even offered to pay, but I’m working so much overtime right now to cover for coworkers out due to COVID, I just don’t have the time.”
“I wish…hmm. I wish I was a millionaire and could travel the world with my family. Maybe we could buy a boat and sail around the world for a few years. I would definitely take my parents, wife, and daughters to Russia…Moscow, Omsk, St. Petersburg…and show them where I was born and where their grandparents grew up. Family is important.”

WELCOME TO THE CHOIR ROOM, CHAD SURETTE (mason dye fc),
here is your SCHEDULE! you have twenty-four hours to turn in your account and post an intro. good luck and have fun with the semester!
[MASON DYE, CISMALE, HE/HIM/HIS] who’s that? oh it’s {CHAD SURETTE}. I hear they’re {SEVENTEEN} and a {SENIOR} at {DALTON} and are part of {Warblers, Lacrosse (Captain), Rinky Dinks}. they’re known to be {CHEERFUL, RESPECTFUL} and {CHAOTIC, COWARDLY}. some people say they remind them of {cowboy boots and jeans, colorful bday party plates, barber shop quartets, pink polos, copious amounts of hair gel, baking cookies with an apron on}. only one way to find out! [herman, 21, he/him/his, US Mountain Standard Time]
PLEASE LIST AT LEAST THREE DETAILED HEADCANONS BELOW
Even though they were both born and raised in Lima, current real estate agent Bobby Surette and his stay at home wife (idk let’s call her Linda…feels right) met while “studying” at BYU. They ended up getting married before they even graduated…and a couple of years down the line, Chad Surette was born.
Up until Chad’s freshman year, he and his family all lived in Texas. As such…Chad is a complete southern gentleman, country drawl and all. And yes…he loves country music and will defend it to the death.
Chad grew up in an aggressively mormon household with his parents, two older brothers, and two “baby” sisters. He realized from an early age that the life that his parents chose for them was one that wouldn’t make him very popular at school…so he committed himself to being a friendly face from an extremely young age.
Being the softest boy of three meant that Chad was constantly bullied and berated by his brothers and father…all under the guise of trying to “put some hair on his chest”. Chad adopted a lovingly self-deprecating goofball persona to deal with all of this.
Tragedy also struck for the Surette family when Chad was really young. His mother and uncle passed away in a boating accident while on a family vacation in Puerto Rico. Chad was only 13 when all of this went down…but because his older brothers were on their missions and his father didn’t have any other family to lean on…Chad stepped up as the second parent. The Surettes ended up moving to Lima to stay in Chad’s uncle’s mansion, which was gifted to them in his will.
Chad was enrolled in Dalton in hopes that it would make him a more attractive candidate for colleges (but really so his dad could feel like he was crushing the single parent thing). Chad thrived in a private school environment. Years of singing soprano parts in his church’s choir prepared him to be a shoe-in for the warblers. Before long he climbed the ranks in Lacrosse to be Dalton’s captain…frankly based on the fact that he gave the most compelling pep talks and everyone enjoyed having “Chad Warbler” on the team. Still…a win in Bobby Surette’s book.
Chad is the type of person to put the needs of everyone around him before himself. So upon finding out that his father has been strapped for cash (i.e. gambling and alcohol addictions), he has decided to start working at Rinky Dinks. As well as throw a series of vivacious parties at the Surette estate. He knows it would crush his dad for their fake affluent reputation to be tanked so he does the best he can to keep up appearances. More so, he wants to make sure that if their upper-class suburban lifestyle comes crashing down…he can still keep his sisters from knowing any different.

Jakes Surprise
(Warning~ This story does not contain vore or any sexual components.)
{This is a story for my best friend Jake, and I wanted it to be special for him and only him. First of all Happy Birthday Jake, we have known each other for years it seems like. You are very special to me, so I didn’t want to make a vore story or anything like that. I hope u love it Jake, love u bud ur a very great friend to me and I loved writing this.}
Saturday Moring May 10, 2020~
It was 6 O’clock when my alarm went off, I grabbed my phone wipped my eyes and turned the alarm off. I sat there for a minute before I got up and ran my fingers through my hair. “Damn I need a haircut before I leave” I said as I got up and grabbed some clothes. I went to the shower and got nice and clean and got dressed up. I wore a plaid button down western shirt, with a pair of jeans and some comfortable shoes. I got up grabbed my keys and headed outside to my car. I got in and drove to my barber 💈, he cut my hair and I still had some time to kill so I drove back home. I made me some food and packed up some clothes. My suitcase was on my bed and I put my clothes in there, I would be leaving home for a week for a small vacation. I then looked over to see a message from someone.
Jakes bf~”Hey when does your flight land so I can come pick you up and take you back to our place.”
Me~”the plane touches down roughly at 1 o’clock so 2pm in NY.”
Jakes bf~” thanks I’ll be waiting Cal.”
I grabbed my phone, the charger and my laptop. My Uber arrived right on time and I gabbed everything including Jakes gift that was placed nicely inside my suitcase. I locked my door behind me and texted my neighbor that I was leaving and wouldn’t be back for a week. I asked him if he could watch the house and got in the Uber. He drove me to DFW airport and I checked in with the ticket lady. I walked in and sat down with my laptop and was happy I got a window seat. This was the first time I had flown anywhere, luckily I got a really nice person that set next to me. I watched a movie on my laptop when we took off and fell asleep. We hit some turbulence and it woke me up, just in time to see the plane land. It was such a fun experience and I could see Syracuse. All the buildings and even the university, where Jake went to school.
We landed and I felt so happy, this was the first time I was going to meet Jake. Jake and I met probably two years ago, and we always stayed in contact. We talk daily and I felt like it was time I met him, and what better day to meet him then on his birthday. Jake had no idea I was flying in, his bf new and arranged everything. Jake was my best friend, we had grown very close to each other and impacted each other’s lives. I remember sitting in that chair thinking and wondering how someone I never met could have such and impact on my life. Jake knew I loved him, we were like brothers. We could tell each other anything, and we helped each other in so many ways whether it was advice or just simply talking. The flight attendant finally asked me to exit the plane I jumped, I guess i was lost in space thinking about meeting my close friend. I was thankful that I saved up enough money right in time for Jakes birthday.
I stood up and exited the plane and waited for my suitcase. I grabbed it and took out my phone and messaged Jakes bf.
Me~”hey I’m here I’m about to exit the front”
Jakes bf~”alright cool I’m in a black Camero”
I headed outside and notice the temperature difference, it’s a little humid but it’s still pretty cool. It’s usally in the 80s by now in Texas, I look around and saw the camero and Jakes bf gets out.
Jakes bf~” hey Cal how are you doing it’s so nice to finally meet you, Jakes gonna be so excited. Give me a hug.”
Me~”it’s so great to finally meet u as well, Jakes talks about you all the time. I hope he is happy to see me. Jake doesn’t know anything right?”
Jakes bf~”not a one Cal, and I hope it’s only good things u here about me haha!!”
Me~” haha of course, can I put my suit case in the back?”
Jakes bf opens the door and I put my stuff in the back, we get in the car and he drives home. On the way to there place, we talk a lot. I tell him that, meeting him was werid cuz I had only heard about him. I told him that me and jake would stay up for hours talking about you. Then Jakes bf asked me questions about me and my life, since we were just meeting for the first time.
Jakes bf~”so you excited to meet him, Jakes talks about how you have been a great friend to him. I think he’s gonna jump up and hug u!!” Jakes bf says as he looks over at me.
Me~”I hope he does I’ve been wanting to meet him for as long as I can remember.”
Jakes bf~”well we’re here, don’t be nervous Cal jake loves u and will loose it when he sees u.”
Me~”thanks man I’ve just wanted to meet him for so long and now that I’m here I’m so nervous. (I pause for a second to collect myself) Alright let’s go, let me get my stuff real quick.”
Jakes bf “awesome let me go in and u hang on so I can sneak u in and then we can surprise him.”
Jakes bf walks in the door and a few mins later, he comes back outside and tells me to follow him. Jake was on the back talking to someone on the phone. We snuck inside and he showed me to the guest room where I sat my stuff down I could definitely tell jake lives here cuz his guest bedroom had a Syracuse themed bedding on the bed. He loved him team and was big time into basketball. After I got over the awesome guest bedroom design I asked him what the game plan was...... (part one) @texanstrongjake

In 2018 I hit my lowest weight: 98lbs. Diagnosed with ED. Medicated.
I also left my abuser. My best friend drove 5hrs overnight to move me into my mom’s basement. I quit my job.
I went on a single job interview. They told me that I’m too unstable for their working environment.
I went on a single date. He was an advanced software programmer. I tried to feel worthy in my oversized special occasion dress at a downtown restaurant.
2019 started: 108lbs. I started drinking. I moved into a 1 bedroom with a bartender. He “failed to register” and revealed that he was previously convicted of distributing child porn. 8 years in a Texas state prison.
After I found out, I lived with him for 6 months. I started birth control and had unprotected sex with him. He got me a receptionist job at the the barbershop he goes to every week.
I finally managed to get my weight up to 118lbs. My beloved 10yr old cat mysteriously disappeared from our apartment. Never saw her again. Then he kicked me out too.
I moved back into my mom’s. Applied for graduate school. Accepted into a paid assistantship program. Quit his barber shop.
I weighed 120lbs when I went on my second date with the advanced software programmer. Turns out, his name is Ben and we both love amusement parks.
I haven’t been this heavy since before high school. I haven’t been this happy in my entire life.
It’s 2020, and now the scale says 130lbs. Ben proposed outside the Hardrock at Universal in Florida. My goal is to shed the pounds I’ve gained during my journey.
