I was class of 2002. I was out since grade school because I kissed girls on the playground. I got beaten up, accused of being a predator, the whole nine yards. Everything these posts are detailing happened to me; it was the 90s in the rural deep south.
My best friend in middle school loved the Spice Girls and playing dress up and putting on make up and inventing elaborate games where we were sisters running away from the world.
My best friend in middle school was technically a boy, but she knew who she was. She was trans, and by high school she was doing full time as a girl though her dad didn't know at all. She would go to my house and put on her girl clothes and we would go to school together.
She got kicked out of the private school we attended once the students found out she was trans.
At the time all this happened, my mom worked at the local AIDS service org, and I got to meet droves of trans people and feel like my tiny queer ass belonged somewhere. The ASO was filled with trans people day in day out. It was down the street from my middle/high school so I was there every day after school avoiding homework.
There have always been trans people.
That said, we couldn't have a sign that identified us as an ASO. We regularly had to paint over graffiti and we had our own intense security systems because the cops wouldn't respond if we called. We dealt with the adult version of school kids beating people up and harassing them, and it often meant that anyone who was seen coming out or in our building was a known queer and would be heavily ostracized. We had four exits, one on every side of the building, for the safety and anonymity of the people using our services.
My best friend could've got hormones and social support from that ASO. But even knowing that I was there and my mom was there, two people who supported her explicitly, she was too afraid to go. She ended up getting her hormones in the big city because it was more anonymous.
Trans people have always been here and we're always going to be here. We just hide sometimes, to survive.
I graduated high school in 99.
There was a student at our school named Wayne.
Wayne was gay. It was obvious. He was unable to stay in the closet even if he wanted to. To make matters worse, he was also Black. From a bullying standpoint, that was not a great combo. Both Black and white students made fun of him relentlessly. He was ostracized from the only community that may have given him protection. Only us theater kids stuck up for him, but not to significant effect.
Wayne was bullied so much that at one point he finally snapped and attacked his bullies with a lunch tray. I was actually seated in perfect line of sight and just sat there chewing my soggy fries in stunned silence. It didn't even seem real as I was witnessing it. The image of him wailing on his main bully as the food on his tray flew off is permanently logged into my long term memory.
The bully he attacked had blood all over his face and went straight to the nurse. Other than superficial cuts, he was not injured.
Before the attack, Wayne went to teachers for help. He went to guidance counselors for help. He went to the principals for help.
He did all of the things you were supposed to do. No one helped him. They wagged a finger at the bullies and warned them to stop.
Wayne's lunch tray melee was the only thing that worked. His bullies stayed far away from him. But a week later Wayne was expelled and the bullies were given no punishment.
So... no.
No one in my school talked about being trans.
Because the only way to survive being openly queer was to bash people with a lunch tray.
