These are clever shoes to wear to a Thai temple, rather than within, as you’ll politely take them off and leave them at the gate. Don’t wear laced shoes; tying and untying shoe laces? No thanks. A slip-on shoe is ideal. Closed-toe shoes are more appropriate, whether loafers, flats or canvas TOMs.
As for the socks – you might like to bring a pair of ankle socks with you, to put on at the temple entrance. You’ll leave your shoes outside and enter temples barefoot, however, the tiled floors at many temples get extremely hot in the Thai sun – painfully so. Be careful in socks, though, as the floors can be slippery.
Other than perhaps using the hotel gym, this would be the only occasion you’d ever consider wearing socks in Thailand. Cross them off your Thailand packing list!
What fabric is best in Thailand?
The climate determines what you should wear in Thailand – a fine line between respecting local culture, and not melting to a puddle. Despite Thailand’s typical temperatures – mid 30s (over 90°F) – and high humidity, your fabric choices can win the game. You’re not coming on vacation to play “sweaty bush pig”, are you?
1. Linen or linen/cotton blends 2. Rayon or light cotton 3. Wicking and quick-dry fabrics 4. Skin-protecting UPF fabrics (Thailand’s UV is very strong: wear SPF 30 bare minimum, and always wear a hat!)
The worst fabric for Thailand?
Anything lined with polyester. It will melt and so will you. If you’re packing skirts or dresses, double check that any lining isn’t polyester. If so, leave it behind. In Thailand it’s as good as wearing a Ziplock bag.

It’s Sunday, it must be Melbourne...
In the space of the last eight days, Kim and I have covered over 21,000 miles and gone back and forth in time by around 18 hours losing and then regaining time, so it probably isn’t too surprising that I am currently awake at just after six a.m. on a Sunday morning.
Anyway, the purpose of our flying visit to the UK was ostensibly to see my mother and check up with her after she lost her husband a little over six weeks ago, see a little of the country and take a couple of days out, drink a few pints of real ale and enjoy some good food. Unfortunately, our best laid plans went somewhat astray.
On the second day we were there, as we were heading out for Sunday lunch (something I’ve been looking forward to literally for months, because you cannot get a decent Sunday lunch for love nor money) my mother took a very heavy fall outside her flat and broke her upper arm quite badly. She lay on the ground and we waited for the ambulance to arrive, which it did in what was actually a relatively quick 45 minutes, although of course while you are waiting for an ambulance with your 89 year old mother lying on the ground in extreme pain, going into shock and afraid to move her for fear that you might make anything worse, well 45 minutes is an absolute eternity.
We spent the next few days becoming intimately familiar again with the National Health Service, which despite all of the amazing work it still does, after working in one of the best public hospitals in Australia for the last few years it’s plain that years of austerity measures have taken a toll on what was once the proudest achievement of post-war Britain. Thankfully Mum is stable now but has a long road back to recovery, and with her advanced years, something which seems as simple as a broken arm is rather more complicated as her mobility and ability to use a walking aid is severely restricted. Simple things such as being able to prepare and eat a meal become profoundly more difficult, being able to move even a short distance becomes challenging and potentially fraught with risk. And of course, needing assistance with activities that we take for granted such as being able to bathe and go to the toilet become things that are embarrassing and potentially laden with shame.
As distressing as this whole experience was, there were a few good things that came out of it, firstly the fact that we were there when it happened and not when Mum was alone and could potentially have laid there in pain for ages before help came along. Secondly is the fact that despite all this happening within hours of Kim and my mum first meeting, Kim immediately was there for her to assist and protect my mother’s dignity when she really needed someone there for her. The gratitude we all have for this is beyond words. It’s a hell of an introduction to your mother in law to have but in keeping with our family motto, tum descendis.
Despite all of this, and the fact that while we were there the weather decided to dump the equivalent of two months of rain in a single week, we still managed to go to one of the most spectacular of stately homes, get in a few truly good meals, catch up with my brother, my niece and her little boy. We saw a fair bit of the lush English countryside, through the windscreen of our rented Mercedes, driving to and from the hospital, stopped in the market town of Stamford for a brief explore despite the pouring rain and discovered the village of Fotheringhay which is the site where Mary, Queen of Scots was executed and where Richard III is celebrated each year at the historic church.
We managed to cram in a night in London, staying in an AirBnB which appeared to belong to a Russian oligarch, caught up with two of my oldest friends and my niece who I haven’t seen in almost 30 years. Had a very good dinner, a couple of pints of my favourite beer and then in the morning a lightning quick trip around Selfridges, a wonderful breakfast before heading back to Heathrow for the 24 hour return flight home.
Despite the rushed and somewhat stressful nature of this trip, its left us both wanting to return to Britain again, to see more of the country, to see more of my friends and family. While to many this experience might seem a bit of a nightmare, to me, it was an experience that was filled with love, seeing how Kim stepped into the breach to help my mother when she really needed an ally and champion on her side, seeing friends and family that I haven’t seen in years take the time and make the effort to spend what was only a few hours with us meant so much to me.
This post is far from perfect, it doesn’t probably encapsulate that many of the myriad thoughts I have going through my head about the experience of the last week, but I’m grateful for that opportunity and I am grateful to be home and for the life that I have here on the other side of the world where dawn is just breaking and the birds are greeting the day.

I am not that big a fan of football, so my major objective in attending the World Cup was to experience the massive fandom for the game and also the transformation of Qatar from a conservative middle eastern country to a progressive nation focused on healthcare & sports it has envisioned itself to be. While FIFA World Cup is still on its way, no one can predict who will win the Qatar Fifa World Cup 2022.
How to Reach Qatar from India?
Doha is the capital of Qatar, and all the planes land at Hamad International Airport. Qatar had made Hayya Card as a substitute for Visa for World Cup 2022. Otherwise, Qatar offers visas on arrival to Indian Passport holders. The Hayya Card was issued to every passport holder who had 1 Match ticket for the World Cup and accommodation booked in Qatar for three nights in advance. The process is simple, you present your Match Ticket voucher code and accommodation booking number and a Digital Hayya Card is issued in your name within 24 Hours. This Hayya Card is mandatory for entry into Qatar, gives you unlimited access to public transport in Qatar, and is issued free of cost.
Accommodation in Qatar
As expected, the room tariffs were touching the roofs during the World Cup Schedule, so I was not able
To find any accommodation less than 500$ a night and even hosting Couchsurfing and Airbnbs were not allowed for World Cup without the government permission by citizens of Qatar. So I finally figured out the concept of Fan Villages that had been established especially for the World Cup. And finally managed to get a one-bedroom apartment for me at 128$ a night which is around Rs.10,000 a night for three nights.
Booking Match Tickets
One of the most important questions on every football fan’s mind who plans to watch a FIFA world cup match live in the stadium is, “how much is a ticket for World Cup Qatar 2022?” I thought the tickets would be very expensive and the process to get them would be quite complicated, but it turned out to be one of the simplest processes. One should only purchase tickets from the Official FIFA Ticketing website as all the other platforms might not issue you ticket vouchers even after payment deduction. While there was a long list of matches that I could have watched from the FIFA world cup 2022 list but , I went on to the FIFA website, looked up the Qatar world cup 2022 schedule, zeroed in on the matches I wanted to watch live in the stadium, scouted for their tickets, and secured two tickets for two different World Cup 2022 Group stage matches.

4. Australia vs Tunisia — Cat 3 tickets — Cost 280 Qatari Riyal equivalent to Rs.6000.
