When she knocks on his door and enters, she finds Bertholdt bundled up in bed, the sheets wrapped around him as a book lies open in his lap. Curiosity replaces his usual reserved caution when she catches his attention, eyes bright with a tentative glimmer covering his grey irises. Less like prey in front of blades, and more like…

More like the person she could never see in him again. The one she wants to continue to refuse to see.

She places her tray on the night table. Her job is done, she can leave again—but as Bertholdt untangles his legs from his bedsheets and silently, unobtrusively scooches over to get in reach of his lunch, Mikasa feels that she cannot just leave and the nature of their relationship no longer warrants her usual quiet retreat after yesterday.

Bertholdt’s feet touch the wooden floorboards. Mikasa sits down next to him, a gesture distant from the other times she’d bring him his rations, and he awaits her reasoning with wide eyes.

She knows it’s what people who are comfortable around each other do. As she does with Armin. As she has seen Armin do with Bertholdt. But never as they have done with each other.

It can form a bridge. It lasts for only a second before she gets cold feet, Mikasa’s lips against Bertholdt’s cheek while he freezes, but he does not retract. Before either has had the chance to process it, she’s already on her way out and neither can see the other’s reaction.

She closes the door behind her but falls back against it, a sense of personal failure clinging to her heart that refuses to let itself be drowned by her confusion.

Never did she expect it to hurt to assign humanity to her sworn enemies.

Bertholdt is the 3rd child who’s forced to pilot an EVA. He’s blackmailed by being shown an injured Mikasa (NERV set her up to get hurt). Shadis or Magath has Gendo’s role.

Mikasa is the first child. She’s not a husk, but she’s disinterested in everything that’s not Armin or Eren. Later learns to open up to others outside her friend group. (Sasha takes the place of Hikari here I guess)

Reiner is the 2nd child and is tsundere towards Bert (they have a rivalry and a will they won’t they thing). And he’s from Germany who wants to be a hero.

Annie is the 4th child and one of the friends Bert makes at school after being beat up by her. She ends up in a coma after her EVA gets infected and Bert almost kills her against his will.

Eren tells Bertholdt he loves him and then his head pops off after trying to start third impact

Reiner gets mindraped and his mommy complex breaks his psyche. Bert visits him in the hospital later. 

Third impact doesn’t happens. I’m pretty sure Bert is mentally stronger than Shinji, so humanity doesn’t go sploosh. He also gets ship teased with everyone except Annie in this verse. There’s no clone shenanigans here.

Hey I just was wondering your thoughts on Bertkasa (Bertholdt and Mikasa). I thought it was an interesting idea considering how similar the two of them are and I haven't seen many people comment on it. Do you ship Bertholdt with anyone in particular?

Thoughts on Bertholdt x Mikasa:

This ship is definitely one of those rare ones and I never really thought about it before until recently. I can sort of see the similarities between the two characters and thus can understand why some people ship them.

However I personally don't ship them due to the fact that their interactions in the anime/manga are so aggressive and full of anger. Mikasa wants Bertholdt dead due to his crimes against Eldians and overall their relationship after Bertholdt and Reiner revealed their identities has been very tense. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think their relationship even before the Clash of the Titans arc wasn't anything special in the first place. And to me, canon relationships matter when shipping but of course everyone has their preferences.

Now, who do I ship Bertholdt with then?

Reiner! Reibert has been my OTP for so long and I could go on and on about why I ship them but to keep it short and to prevent me from ranting; I find their relationship strong and healthy and their interactions are moslty positive. (I can write about Reibert some other time If you guys want)

Overall Berumika is an interesting and rare ship. Not exactly to my liking but it's not like I'm going to attack anyone who ships it of course. If you like it, good for you!

TL;DR:

While I can see Bertholdt and Mikasa's similarities as characters, I personally don't ship Berumika simply because I find their relationship and interactions aggressive. Nothing against the people who ship them of course.
