Book Reviews (6/3/23)

The Watchman by Simon Lee

A good, if rough around the edges, debut Pros: Mac and Ash have very distinct voices. The pacing is generally solid, with tension rising and falling at appropriate intervals. There is a certain rhythm or cadence to the way things flow that makes the narration feel very personable. Solid world-building that reminds me of The Witcher, Berserk, Elden Ring, and Gnosticism. Certain moments have a cinematic quality that would not be out of place on the big screen. Easter eggs are fun to spot. Self-contained while leaving room for more. Cons: This is the author’s first work and it shows in places. (Typos, repetitive exposition, the occasionally clunky line, that sort of stuff.) While the book can be tense at times and is definitely not for younger audiences, I didn’t find it particularly scary. If anything, it’s more of an urban fantasy/western with some horror trappings. Overall, I feel The Watchman’s good qualities outweigh the bad so I look forward to reading the next book.

A Berserker is a strong warrior with an ursine aspect. They would enter the battlefield in a trancelike ecstacy. And it was said that no steel or fire could harm them.

The Berserkers were Germanic in origin, were commonly reported in Old Norse literature and historians believe that either they entered a stage of rage before entering the battlefield or that

they consumed drugged foods to disable normal human reactions and feelings like fear and pain.

NAME: Otso

ORIGIN: An otso is a bear spirit in Finnish mythology, and is sometimes represented as a sacred woodland spirit or someone who ran away from civilization and was transformed into a bear in the wilderness. The veneration of otso was connected to a Finnish tradition of bear skulls being kept in sacred clearings and brought offerings.

DESCRIPTION: Taking the form of a giant, ethereal bear, an otso is an ursine spirit that is bound to a bear skull. While many spectres are associated with haunted houses or abandoned buildings, otso only form in wild places, such as groves, natural caves, and woodland springs. They can form in a variety of manners -- from mundane bears, the spirits of deceased bugbears, or occasionally from humans who completely reject civilization and are transformed into an ursine spirit on death. While otso are sometimes misunderstood as “good” or “protector” spirits, they can be quite dangerous.

The material vessel of an otso is always a large bear skull. The natural area around the skull is infused with natural magic that fills local plants and animals with lifegiving vitality. This leads magical varieties of flora to often be found in the vicinity. Unfortunately, this makes it more likely that otso will maul foraging herbalists or people desperate for rare cures.

ABILITIES: An otso manifests when intruders enter the skull’s haunted area. The spirit is capable of physical harm despite its ghostly appearance, and will continue to attack trespassers as long as they remain in the skull’s vicinity. The intrusion of civilization, such as vehicles or nearby construction, sends an otso spirit into a berserk murderous fury. They can cause considerable physical damage. Weapons that aren’t composed of iron or salt pass right through them. Otso are aware of everything that happens in a wide radius around their skull, and can use natural magic to cause plants in the area to snare or otherwise harm intruders.

WEAKNESS: Because they are magically bound to the skull, they can’t go very far from it, and will stop pursuing intruders that leave the area. Iron weapons or salt rounds harm otso as if they were physical beings. If defeated in this way, an otso goes dormant and must wait before manifesting again, sometimes for years. Completely destroying an otso’s skull vessel will banish the spirit for good. Certain offerings (typically of things living bears eat in the wild) will calm an otso and allow temporary safe passage into the area it guards, provided the visitor shows proper respect to its home.

NOTES: Bugbears are not harmed by otso and can wordlessly communicate with them. Many traditionalist bugbears see otso as sacred, or at least culturally significant. They sometimes bury their dead around an otso and a particularly old otso may have a number of other bugbear spirits protecting it.
