Berry Book Challenge: November Edition
Tumblr media
What is it?
As a writer, November has always been writing challenge month. This year, since I've had to step back from writing, I decided to bring the spirit of nanowrimo to my reading life too.
Rules:
- Pick a page count. Keeping the nano spirit, this challenge goes by the number of pages read rather than books. You can either select one from the Reading Tiers list below, or customize your own. If you'd like to add a book goal, that's good to! Pages are just the focus.
- Pick your books. This step is optional, but can help make sure you're picking books that fit nicely into your page count. If you have a large TBR pile or no idea where to start, try using some of the prompts provided in the Prompts list
- Read! Starting November 1st in your local timezone, dig into your books and knock out those pages. The challenge ends on November 30th.
- Share your progress. If you decide to participate, use #BerryBooksNovember to chat about how things are going for you! Challenges always work best when others doing it can interact and have fun together!
Reading Tiers
Casual: 300 pages (10p/day). Roughly 1 novel.
Dedicated: 750 pages (25p/day). Roughly 2 novels.
Avid: 1500 pages (50p/day). Roughly 4‐5 novels.
Enthusiastic: 2250 (75p/day). Roughly 7-8 novels.
Voracious: 3000 pages (100p/day). Roughly 9-10 novels.
Nano: 5000 pages (167p/day). A special November tier. Roughly 16-17 novels.

Berry Book Challenge Update 1: Starting strong with 424 pages read!
1.11.21:
Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey (page 137/137) - This book let me read a hundred pages in twenty minutes, it feels like cheating!
A Different Dog by Paul Jennings (page 82/82) - This was a little weird? I wish I could ask my ten year old self what they think of it.
Queer: a Graphic History by Meg-John Barker and Julia Scheele (page 82/173) - This is a comic! And yet I can only read a few pages at a time before my head goes buzz.
Collection of Bertolt Brecht's poetry: 102/369 - This is the first time I've read a book of poetry from start to finish, including the 25 page biography at the start. 102 pages in and I've found one poem I like so far.
Affinity by Sarah Waters (page 67/416) - I am mostly confused, don't love this one yet, but I've been told it will all come together in the end.
Trivium: the Classical Liberal Arts of Grammar, Logic & Rethoric (page 32/389) - I love this book but can only read a few pages at a time. Reading about what letters sound like should not be this heavy.
The Revolution of Marina M by Janet Fitch (hour 11:10/30:25) - I think maybe I should count one page every two minutes instead of on per minute, to make it more precise, but that means this challenge requires a lot of minutes. Not sure what I'll do.
Total: 424 pages, not counting the audiobook

I had to give up on my yearly challenge for this year because i ended up not reading basically anything for 6 months 😂. But now I've started a monthly challenge for myself that I find much more doable and flexible. Am currently at 4 books for November
Tumblr media
Weekly Bookish Question #259 (November 17th - November 20th):
In case you are or have been participating in any, how is it going with the reading challenges this year?

Reading Challenge Week 1 Update
Weekly target: 700-1050
Pages read: 791
Books Finished:
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater - 404 pages
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson - 387 pages
I had a bit of a rough start this week. Couldn't get into reading enough to hit my pages, then read almost an entire book in one day 😂. I'm hoping i can get a bit more consistent with it next week, but I'm still on track for my lower target right now.

Berry Books November Update: Week 1, November 1-7
I’m in a slight book slump — I’m still in book shock from the Darker Shades of Magic trilogy — but I still managed to finish one book this week. I read (and adored) The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (448 pages) by V.E. Schwab.
In reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I’ve officially read all of V.E. Schwab’s adult novels! V.E. Schwab’s young adult novels (published under Victoria Schwab) are on my TBR, but I’ll be switching authors for the month of November.
My November TBR:
1. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, V.E. Schwab
2. Under the Whispering Door, T.J. Klune
3. Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World, Benjamin Alire Sáenz
4. Cemetery Boys, Aiden Thomas
5. Boyfriend Material, Alexis Hall
6. Love, Simon, Becky Albertalli
7. The Upside of Unrequited, Becky Albertalli
8. Leah on the Offbeat, Becky Albertalli
9. Love, Creekwood, Becky Albertalli
10. She Who Became the Sun, Shelley Parker-Chan
11. Jasmine Throne, Tasha Suri
12. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Taylor Jenkins Reid
Read this Week: 1/12 books, 448/4672 pages

Good luck! I hope this challenge can help you get back into reading 😄 thats a big part of why I made it for myself initially as well
Yo
Hey so uh. I’m a writer (obvi) but I don’t read NEARLY as much as I should. Like, I haven’t picked up a book in months which is absolutely terrible of me and I know it.
I want to get back into reading for my own personal enjoyment, (so I can tell people YEAH I like to read and not feel guilty about it), and hopefully to refresh my creativity/inspiration as a writer as well.
That’s why I’m gonna try to participate in the Berry Book Challenge: November Edition by @berry-books !
I’m not gonna go too crazy here, nothing intense or all that impressive. I’m going to make my own tier, which is a solid 20 pages per day. That way I’d end the month with around 600 pages, enough for an average sized novel and a smaller one.
This month’s to be read list:
Les Misérable by Victor Hugo - 321 pages
Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux - 192 pages
I’m hoping this can kickstart my love for reading again. And hey! If it can renew my creativity and help me read faster then that’s great too! I’m mainly just wondering if I can do it though. And if it all goes well, then I might make this a habit! Who knows?
We’ll just have to try it and see

I devoured each of them in a day! Each book is under 200 pages with a short, but comprehensive plot. I’d definitely recommend them if you’re in the midst of a book slump!

Berry Books November Update: Week 2, November 8-14
I finished two books this week: Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune (384 pages) and Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (352 pages). Both books dealt with themes of grief, loss, and death as well as family, friendship, and love. As a result, both books were thoughtful and emotional reads. (I teared up while reading Cemetery Boys and I outright cried while reading Under the Whispering Door.)

Note
For the book challenge, have you thought about whether picture books/comics/audiobooks count? Poetry? E-books? (I use the apple books app and each page is very short compared to printed books) I kinda wanna join but a lot of what I read would be hard to count.
For pictures books/comics: A page is a page. It all counts the same. If you personally want to add your own rules, go for it! But you don't have to. These challenges are always going to be very flexible. They're meant to encourage people to challenge themselves to read more. Whether thats novels or comic books or anything else in between is up to you.
Poetry: you can either go by page like said above for poetry books or, if you tend to read things more individually, count by poem
Audiobooks/Ebooks/other formats: typically I just look up the hardcover page count and use that as my number. If you don't want to do that, you can also just make separate goals for different formats (ie. Go by minutes instead of pages for your audiobooks).
Hope this helps!

Berry Book Challenge Update 7: 202 pages. Have been traveling and didn't bring any books, but did have some stuff saved to my phone.
14-20.11.21
[Favorite fic pt. 4] (page 285/285) = 95 pages
[Favorite fic pt.5] (page 68/68) = 23 pages
[Favorite fic pt.6] (page 93/93) = 31 pages - The notes of this promises a part seven but the author switched fandoms since then so it may never happen 😔😭
[Fic I found on my phone while bored on a plane] (page 160/390) = 53 pages
The Revolution of Marina M by Janet Fitch (hour 14:20/30:25)
