Yugi raises Jaden part 9

Yugi and Seto took their places in the royal hall. Atem stood to the side close to where Yugi was. He wasn’t going to miss a moment of this duel.

People had started to gather, thinking Atem was dueling once more. They were excited to see their king and their gods fight once more. Yet when the crowd saw that it was Yugi dueling they started to murmur to each other.

Atem smirked. Soon his people will see the wonder that is his aibou.

They had determined that Yugi would start the duel. “Yugi!” Kaiba called. “Once I defeat you, I’ll beat the Pharaoh. You’ll both get to watch as I finally defeat your precious partner.” If Kaiba was anything it was dramatic.

“I’m not going to lose Kaiba. Not when I have a promise to keep.” Yugi had promise Mokuba and Jaden they would be home soon. And he intended to keep that promise.

“Duel!” They cried together in unison.

“I’ll start.” Yugi looked at the five cards in his hand. His eyes landed on one card in particular and knew exactly what he was going to do. “I set one monster face down, and I set one card face down. That will end my turn.”

“That’s your turn? You must have a pathetic hand.” Kaiba called. “Let me show you how it’s done! I’ll summon my Battle Ox in attack mode, and set two cards face down.” Yugi knew this combo. One of those cards was probably shrink and the other was Kaiba’s Crush Card trap card. He was trying to destroy Yugi’s deck. “Now go Battle Ox attack his face down monster.”

Battle Ox launched itself forward to attack and Yugi smirked as his face down revealed itself. Elemental Hero Clayman appeared, his 2000 defense easily blocking Axe Raiders 1700 attack.

Kaiba growled as he took the first damage of the duel, a mere 300 points. “That’s not one of your cards.” He observed narrowing his eyes at Yugi wondering what trickery this was. Did Yugi overhaul his deck in the time Kaiba was away?

Atem was also curious. He knew his aibou’s deck better than anyone. And while it wouldn’t surprise him if Yugi change up his deck in his absence, he was surprised by how different the card was.

Yugi smiled at Kaiba, “you’re right it’s not mine. This was a gift from Jaden. He wanted me to have a piece of his deck with me to protect me. And I intend to use it well.” He could see understanding flash across Kaiba’s face. He knew what it meant to receive such a card from a loved one.

Kaiba made a quick note of the monsters attack points. It was a mere 800 meaning the card would be spared from his Crush Cards effects. Good. Wait why was that good? Destroying that card would upset Yugi possibly leading him to make mistakes. He should be trying to destroy it at all cost. And yet…. No he needs to focus. He needs to beat Yugi and then he can defeat the Pharaoh.

“I end my turn.” Kaiba called already starting to plan his next move.

‘Alright’ Yugi thought. ‘If I attack and those face downs are his Crush Card combo then it will destroy my deck. So I need to bait him into attacking me.’ Yugi looked at his hand and knew what to do.

“I play Berry Magician Girl in attack mode.” Yugi played the baby magician as she fluttered on to the field. “Her special effect activates allowing me to add one Magician Girl from my deck to my hand.” Yugi added Kiwi Magician Girl to his hand. “I lay one card face down and end my turn.” Yugi says as he played mirror force face down.

“You’re not going to win this duel by playing cautiously.” Kaiba said as he drew his card. “I summon La Jinn the Mystical Genie of the Lamp, and I place one card face down. Now attack his Berry Magician Girl.” Kaiba waisted no time going to destroy Yugi’s weak monster.

“Now her special effect activates. When a monster attacks Berry Magician Girl she switches to defense mode and I can special summon a Magician Girl from my deck.” Yugi called as his Berry magician girl flew down to the field with her arms crossed over her chest. “Now come forth my Dark Magician Girl!” Yugi called as the blond spell caster appeared on his side of the field.

The crowd exploded in whispers and the Dark Magician Girl appeared shooting a wink to the crowed. They had never seen anyone besides Atem and Mana summon the spellcaster.

“Ya! That’s my ka Atem!” Mana cheered pumping her fist in the air before grabbing Atem’s arm and pointing at the Dark Magician Girl. “He still uses my Ka!” She was so excited her duel spirit was still helping Atem’s aibou. Atem smiled warmly at his childhood friend before turning his attention back to the duel.

“That’s not going to stop my attack!” Kaiba called as La Jinn attacked Berry Magician Girl. The small magician cried out as she was destroyed. “Now start your turn so I can end you.”

Yugi drew his card and thought of what to do next. Looking at his hand he had Apple Magician Girl and Lemon Magician Girl, he could get them both out on the field in the next move. But Kaiba was right. He wasn’t going to win if he kept playing cautiously. It was time to go on the attack.

“I summon Apple Magician Girl.” The dark haired magician appeared on the field. “Now go dark Magician Girl attack his La Jinn.” And with that the Dark Magician Girl launched her attack.

“Not so fast! I activate my Shrink Magic Card. This card cuts my monsters attack points by half. Now I activate my Crush Card Magic card.” Yugi had been right, Kaiba’s strategy was to destroy his deck. “Now when you destroy my monster any monsters you have with more than 1500 attack points are destroyed. Say goodbye to all the powerful monsters in your deck.” Kaiba laughed. He might have taken 1,100 points of damage but he had this duel in the bag.

Dark Magician Girl shrieked as she was destroyed. Yugi gritted his teeth as he discarded all of his powerful monsters from his deck. ‘Saw that coming.’ “I end my turn.”

“Now it’s my turn!” Kaiba called as he drew his card. “I play cost down. Now I sacrifices my Battle Ox to summon my Blue Eyes White Dragon!” Blue light exploded around Kaiba as his signature dragon swooped down from the sky, her roar echoed around them. “Say good bye to your Apple Magician Girl.”

“I don’t think so!” Yugi calls, “Her special effect activates. When you attack Apple Magician Girl I can summon another Magician Girl from my hand. So come forth Lemon Magician Girl!” The blond magician appeared with a flourish. “And your attack is cut in half.”

“That’s still not enough to keep you magician alive.” Kaiba called as blue eyes attacked.

“Maybe not but this will!” Yugi replied. “Activate trap Mirror Force!”

“No!” Kaiba called as his blue eyes white dragon was destroyed. “If you think you’ve gotten ride of my Blue Eyes you’re wrong. Now go monster reborn.” Kaiba activated his one remaining face down. His Blue Eyes came roaring back to the field. “Now destroy his Lemon Magician Girl!”

Lemons Magician Girl cried out as she was blown away by Blue Eyes. Yugi shouted as the attack landed close to him. These monsters were real and the blast was close. His life points dropped by 2,200 hundred points.

“Yugi! Are you alright!” Atem shouted. He trusted Yugi to win, but these attacks were real and his aibou could get hurt.

Yugi gritted his teeth as he straightened up. “I’m alright.”

“My turn is done. Now take your last move so I can finish you!” Kaiba called. All Yugi had on the field was one 1,200 attack point monster and a 2,000 defend point monster. He had destroyed all of Yugi’s powerful monsters. Yugi couldn’t win.

“My move.” Yugi called as he drew his card. He didn’t have a lot of moves he could make at this moment. But if he knew Kaiba he knew what he’d do next. Try to get his other two Blue Eyes on to the field. “I’ll switch Apple Magician Girl into defense mode and place one monster face down. That ends my turn.”

“That’s about all you can do with the pitiful monsters you have left.” Kaiba called as he drew his next card. “I play Card of Sanctity, now we both draw until we have six cards in our hands, not that it will help you much.” Kaiba drew his cards as did Yugi. Yugi kept a straight face as the card he needed ended up in his hand. Kaiba smirked, “I play polymerization, fusing the Blue Eyes on my field with the two Blue Eyes in my hand. Come forth my ultimate creature Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon!”

Two more dragons appeared on Kaiba’s side, but they didn’t stay for long as the three dragons fused together. The resulting three headed dragon roared menacingly at Yugi. “Now attack his face down monster!” Kaiba ordered.

“Not this time!” Yugi called, “I activate my face down, Block attack!” Yugi played the first card he placed face down, stopping Kaiba’s attack in its tracks.

“You can’t stall forever Yugi!” Kaiba called as his dragon landed next to him. “I end my turn.”

“I’m not stalling Kaiba!” Yugi said as he drew his last card. “You’ve actually given me my winning hand. I set four cards face down. And then I activate the spell defuse! Say goodbye to your ultimate dragon!” Yugi called as the fused dragon became three separate beasts once more.

“So what. There is nothing in your deck that can take down one of my dragons let alone all three.” Kaiba shouted as he looked at his three dragons. ‘What was Yugi planning?’

“That’s where you’re wrong! Now I sacrifice my Elemental Hero Clayman,” he had promised himself he would use his son’s card well and he couldn’t wait to tell him that his card helped him defeat Seto Kaiba, “and my Apple Magician Girl to summon my ultimate dragon. Come forth Gandora the Dragon of Destruction!”

The two monsters disappeared in a swirl of smoke. Darkness covered the field but then thousands of red glowing orbs lit the field revealing the body of Gandora. He roared as he entered the field, Kaiba’s blue eyes roaring in response.

“Oh no!” Kaiba realized this was the end.

“And now I pay half of my life points to activate his special ability! Gandora destroys all cards on the field and gets 300 attack points for each card he destroys.” Kaiba’s dragons screeched as they were destroyed. “Between your three dragons, my monster, my 4 spell and trap cards, and your Crush Card that’s 9 cards making Gandora’s attack points 2,700 and since you only have 2,600 life points this duel is over. Now go Gandora! Attack his life points directly!”

Gandora roared as he glowed a bright red, firing its attack at Kaiba. “No!” Kaiba called as his life points dropped to zero. It was over Yugi had won.

“Yugi!” Atem called as he ran forward to pull his aibou into a hug, picking him up and spinning around. He was so proud of his aibou. The crowd started cheering, for Yugi’s victory.

Kaiba kneeled in his spot. He lost. It was over. He couldn’t duel the Pharaoh again. Yet his eyes trailed to Yugi’s smiling face as he laughed while Atem spun him around. Seto hated losing, he couldn’t stand any perceived weakness. And yet looking at Yugi’s joy, this loss didn’t sting as bad.

He was about to stand up and congratulate Yugi on his victory, like the honorable duelist he was, when Mahad returned. “My Pharaoh this is far worse than we thought!”

The joy was instantly sucked from the room. Jaden was in danger.

I tried my best to make this duel like one from the show. I have played duel links for years so I have an idea of how the game should be played. There are some misplays in here but that’s for plot. I did my best to make all the moves legal with the exception of using the anime effect for Card of Sanctity. Hopefully I did a good job!

Yule

Well I promised you I would tell you how Yule went. Amelia, Zoe and me got to Toni’s at about 1.00 pm and the first session for the kids was in the pool. There was a range of ages. There were a couple of others about Zoe’s age but most were older ranging up to about 12 I guess. Anyway the grown-ups weren’t part of the pool party except for those that had volunteered to sit by the pool to keep the kids safe. Naturally Amelia was one of those cos Zoe is so young. I just circulated the parents and drank some mulled wine not overdoing it cos of the evening party to come.

So after the pool the kids got dressed up in their fancy dress on the theme of woodland animals. Lots of reindeers there. Zoe was a fox, She had a jumper and leggings that were kind of fox colour and I had bought a pair of fox ears and a fox tail from a website that does Kemonomimi outfits (and no obs not a butt plug tail u perverts) which Richard had adapted to fit Zoe’s size. She looked very good. Some of the older girls had also gone fot Kemonomimi so there were some racoons and cats and i think on other fox.

Anyhow there was kid party food = hot dogs, burgers, pigs in blankets, you know the sort of stuff, and cakes and ice cream. And, as it was aToni production, there were clowns and jugglers and magicians.

It all went on til 6 but it started to wind down earlier and we left cos Zoe was tired at about 5 with Ina in tow.

Then there was a turn around until eight while we grown-ups got into our party gear. It was cocktail dresses for the girls and dinner jacket for Chris. The girls had to wear seasonal wreaths – mine of ivy and some berries tho the berries fell off gradually through the evening.

The party was in the marquee in the garden just as the kids’ party had been but now there were couches and cushions and the whole place looked like a forest glade which I think I forgot to mention earlier at the kids party. Tables were set out with mulled wine and mead and heather beer and bowls of steaming meats and winter berries. The big central dish which everyone except vegetarian were expected to partake of contained spiced horse meat – absolutely gorgeous. There was also venison and pheasant and stuff like that.

At eleven I was gently tapped on the shoulder and told to see Toni who had looked magnificent in a dress so designed to accentuate her long legs and fantastic tits. I found her in the dining room dressed in a long thin green robe that you could tell covered nothing else.

Time to lose the cocktail dress. Losing underwear was not a problem cos I wasn’t wearing any. I had a long thin robe in brown which opened easily to show my body. There were another three women dressed like me.

And then we went back and mingled. We were adding the spice to say that midnight was near. I went up to Amelia and stroked her back to get  her attention and when she saw me in just a thin robe, even though it was not hanging open she looked at me in a sort of shock.

I think the party is going to get adult soon, i said.

Four of the bedrooms were available. The other four were Toni’s own room, my room, Amelia’s and Zoe’s and they were marked no entry.

I soon had some attention from a man in his thirties – most of the people there were over thirty except for me and Amelia – and i was happy to oblige as i had no idea what had happened to Chris. I was soon back in the marquee and wandered around looking for an invitation which came from a black couple on some cushions. I am out for lunch today with Chris and friends in Covent Garden. Friends who Chris works with and i occasionally too. Couple of Americans and a couple of Germans. Don’t know after that. Tomorrow we are open housing so anyone can turn up at any time – usually people from countries who do there main socailising on Christmas Eve. Yeah we acknowledge the Nailed God for the purposes of others and children and of course Santa will be coming tomorrow night which Zoe is well looking forward to.

Don’t know when i will be on again so have a good rest of the 12 days of Yule and do try to get some fucking in.

Hang on I'm onto something else now. So Oreimo characters and Yugioh decks. Nothing too in-depth because I can not be bothered to learn anything past fusion summoning (synchro and xyz and, god forbid, link, just begone my brain is too small). We can call it an aged outlook, say they were playing during a time when all that didn't exist yet fdkjfdkjd

Kirino would just have a deck full of cute girls, I think the magician girls (Berry Magician Girl, Apple, Lemon, Chocolate, etc), and her strategy would be poor, she'd spend more time excitedly using effects to add girls to her hand than properly setting traps, so literally anybody who played more than occasionally would beat her. Also no Dark Magician actually in her deck, which would cut into Dark Magician Girl herself's usefulness

Kuroneko would prioritize the card's aesthetic while finding ways to keep it balanced and playable. Picture cards like "Magician of Faith" and "Witch of the Black Forest". She wouldn't have like a deck that's made to be a particular set, it would all be very personal and unique. I do also think she'd have Dark Magician... maybe I'm biased because he's my favorite. But she'd play Kirino and they'd squabble over how Kirino is playing the soulless inferiors of the Magician and how Kuroneko just likes creepy/evil-looking cards. She also genuinely plays with ritual spells

Saori's got a much broader sense for media and characters so I think hers would vary more, but she'd happily add cards to her deck that remind her of characters she loves while keeping a good grip on her strategy. It's not as intricate as Kuroneko's, but she's got a solid understanding of the game and how best to utilize her own beloved cards. She's also probably kept in several of her very first ones, or the first ones she ever traded for, things like that, out of nostalgia.

Kyousuke, of course, is just dragged into the fray, so his deck is a mishmash of boosters and whatever else he'd get out of random packs, some traps/spells gifted to him by Saori and Kuroneko, and also a few cute girls that Kirino had bestowed upon him out of the kindness of her heart. "This one doesn't work in my deck, I don't have room... but here, I'll let you have it. You'd better use it." kind of thing. He doesn't understand the rules at all, why is Duel Monsters so damn convoluted?

2012 - Dables - Can’t Not

Not too much to say about this short, very experimental EP. I recorded it in 2 days, then uploaded it online on Day 3 with the intentions to specifically share it with a Facebook group called “Un_Scene: Music of a Different Flavor” that I posted in a lot which was moderated by my buddy Caleb Riley (later vocalist of Trolls, also of CCOC & Jericho Bros). It was a group based in South Carolina but had members from all over who shared the weirdest and most experimental music they could find with each other. Stuff ranging from harsh noise like Merzbow or Hanatarash, obscure IDM/EDM stuff like Squarepusher or various ambient projects, or stuff like Sun City Girls and The Residents. I also remember discovering Bubblegum Octopus from that Facebook group. A lot of members uploaded their own experimental or oddball music too. So I wanted to make something that would fit that bill that the members of that group would enjoy or find interesting and it was a total success! A lot of people in the Un_Scene group absolutely loved it, including a guy named Drew Smith who ran a moderately popular blog called “Music You May Not Have Heard” and tiny indie record label Sarcastic Magician Records who enjoyed my Can’t Not EP so much, he commissioned me to make another EP for his label that would be a split with another experimental artist from Chicago named Otto Rollo. I will write about the outcome of that in a later blog which ended up being called “Refuge” and came out in 2013, a year after this release.

Additionally, I tend to refer to this album as my “Lortab album”, because I was basically bombed on Lortabs the entire 3 days I was working on it lol…

As for the songs themselves, not much to say… ”Storm’s a Brewin’” was simply an experiment with tremolo picking with a flanger pedal on with a few samples of a thunderstorm thrown in.

“Sang Branch Settlers” was a riff I had been playing for a few years at that point as a warm up song that I played when I practiced my guitar. I finally decided to record it and set some drum machines to it. The title comes from a book written about my great grandpa Dave Couch and his family. He and my great great uncle Jim Couch were bluegrass/folk musicians who recorded some music in the 1950’s and who were also moonshiners, miners, and grew ginseng (aka “sang branch”). Later on in 2012, I recorded an entire tribute album to my ancestors The Couch Family, that I will of course go into detail about in a later blog.

“Def” was an experiment in recording everything with the input turned all the way up, as hot as it would go, to overdrive the sound and put it extremely ‘in the red’, meaning all the levels were maxed out completely. Then I simply put compression on it so it would be somewhat listenable. Titled as such because listening to this loud, obnoxious track might make you go deaf…

“Detective Cop Doctor” was an inside joke with my friends Sid and Brittany, a running gag where we would pretend to narrate a shitty fake movie trailer…as in “COMING THIS FALL TO THEATERS NEAR YOU…He’s a DETECTIVE…He’s a COP…but he’s also…A DOCTOR. He heals crime while arresting it!” kinda shit…Technically Brittany came up with that joke so I titled this track after it to make her and Sid laugh. The joke itself did end up getting recorded as a skit called “Dt Cop Doc” on the DAN album “Honey Berry Surprise” so check that out if you want to hear it. The song itself is an experiment in playing the bass while messing with the tuning pegs. Somehow it ended up kinda making sense and sounding slightly like lazy stoner metal…

“Can’t Not” is probably the most normal or straightforward track on here, and I was babysitting my 8 year old nephew Carlos later that night and I recorded him yelling into a microphone with heavy delay and reverb on it and slapped a looped sample of it at the end of this track. No reason, just experimenting & shit…nowadays he is 20 and plays bass in a country music band. I tried to show him some metal bands and stuff like Ween & Primus but he gravitated towards country with a little classic rock being as wild as he gets with the music he likes. Oh well…nothing else to say about the last two tracks really. “Stay at Home Dad” is a loop pedal experiment and “Scat” is also a loop pedal experiment with vocals only.

Years later when I uploaded Can’t Not to all the steaming services, I added some extra tracks from all 3 of my “Stuff” compilation albums to fill it out because I never uploaded any of the 3 “Stuff” albums due to having too many cover songs, which makes it too expensive to do so. So that’s why if you check out “Can’t Not” on Spotify or Apple Music, there are several extra songs, that I will write about in a later blog when I get to the album they originally came from.

The title itself doesn’t mean anything, I just liked that it was an odd double negative. I think it came to me from thinking about the They Might Be Giants song “Don’t Let’s Start”. I just liked the mush-mouthed nonsense of it.

The album art was straight up 100% stolen from online. I tried to figure out who the original artist is and have been unsuccessful tracking them down. Oh well, I have made literally 0 dollars from “Can’t Not” so they aren’t missing out on anything. Sorry I stole your artwork, buddy! But I really do love this weird ass image you made of little kids in Disney character masks in front of a burning car. Fuckin’ badass lol…don’t sue me please!

All in all, for the minimum amount of work I put into this album, I believe I accomplished all of my goals with it and I like it, except for “Scat” which makes me cringe and should probably have been left off the album, but oh well, too late for that.

Thinking a little bit about why magical girl anime holds such appeal for me.

I’m a millennial, which is to say that I’m somewhat of an oldhead in the world of Western anime fans. I got into anime through Sailor Moon way back in the day. I can’t clearly recall the first time I ever watched the show, but whenever it happened, I was hooked right away. Part of the appeal for me back then was the exact same as it is for me now: I love the empowering idea of girls being the ones to save the boys, save the day, save the world, save the universe. Oftentimes it’s a group of girls working together even with their very different personalities and abilities and I love that sort of thing too, that unity of purpose. I also enjoyed picking out a favorite from the team - it’s Sailor Mercury and it always has been for me, though Jupiter has grown on me too. 

I also love the aesthetics, the bright colors, the inventive magic, the theme songs and, but of course, the transformations. Sometimes I find myself getting a bit emotional when I watch a transformation sequence. I might even tear up or cry a little bit, but I’m not sad. Quite the opposite, in fact. I’m happy! I’m moved! Maybe there’s just something about the magic of it all - an everyday girl (or boy, shout out to Cure Wing) becoming someone magnificent and spectacular through the use of a special stick or brooch or cell phone or what have you. Maybe part of it is the imaginative feeling that, hey, maybe this could happen to me too. Maybe I just have to find the right object. Maybe I just need to stumble across a talking cat. I have a cat, but alas, she lacks the ability to speak English and thus to be able to instruct me on the mission I must now undertake.

I’m eating pretty good this season because there are, by my completely unscientific count, three currently airing magical girl shows. Wonderful Precure continues its yearlong run and, even though it isn’t going to top my list of favorite Precure seasons I’ve watched, it’s got its nice moments. (I do wish they’d go ahead and make Satoru and Daifuku into Precures though. Yes, I’ve heard about what happens in the movie and no, that is not good enough.) Acro Trip is a ton of fun and has some interesting rules about how Berry Blossom can and cannot use her magic. Magilumiere takes a cool “what if adults were magical girls and used a combo of magic and technology” angle and shows adults transforming - instead of reverting to their teenage selves and then transforming as in Power of Hope -Precure Full Bloom-. The plot reason for that reversion made perfect sense, but it was a bit of a letdown at first!

There’s also The Stories of Girls Who Couldn’t Become Magicians, with its fun pastel palette, but that’s about witches, not magical girls. (I’m somehow picking up a “What if Utena, but candy-colored and much less traumatic” vibe from it, too, which may make some modicum of sense because it’s a JC Staff production just as Utena was.)

These are the kinds of shows that tend to appeal to me most. I don’t often go for the Big Shows of the Season, the ones that all the critics are excited for or the Shonen Jump adaptations. All of the cookie-cutter isekai “what if I was just a normal dude in this world but the most overpowered guy ever in a fantasy world and every girl was all over me” shows bore me - the only interest I hold in them is to see how the critics are going to skewer them. No matter how many years pass since my first viewing of Sailor Moon, though, magical girl shows continue to hold my interest and I am so glad for that!

This is just a thought that pops into my head every once in awhile I think with the help of some of the dark magician girl adjacent cards and the magician girls archetype could make a interesting magical girl team with the dark magician girl as their leader and Berry magician girl as the non human sidekick and maybe kuribo as the cute animal sidekick

Sociopath? I don’t know. It’s somewhere on a spectrum of mental/emotional fuckery that you don’t need in your life 😰 They will literally drive you crazy, they already might have on some level. You care about them a lot, or are just a loving & generous person, so I can’t hold back with the NOPE that this reading is NOPING.

How they’re going to show up: as everything you’ve ever wanted. When they walk into a room, you hear harps and angels sing, they’ve got their shit together, confident, and they seem downright magical. They always do… This person is fully independent and probably has a great job, money is no issue for this person. Big, big but. They don’t need you, or anyone, so they’re go through people for whatever they can get from them. Probably sex, I’m hearing “being emotionally fed”, whatever that is. They like the drama 🎭 of emotional chaos and storms, they want you to feel 9 Swords, it makes them feel powerful. Worry about them, wonder where this is going, how do they really feel, why aren’t they GIVING back to you, when you give so much to them? It’s bullshit, and it’s their whole deeper, inner, actual personality. Long term, you’re going to realize how much this person lovebombed tf out of you.
