Shirley Valentine (1989). Shirley is a 42-year-old bored Liverpudlian housewife who takes a holiday trip to Greece and meets a local man who bolsters her self-confidence. She evolves and transforms to the point that her husband doesn't even recognize her.

It took me a while to get into this one, but it won me over somewhere in the middle and had totally charmed me by the end. What a fun little belated coming of age film and what a sparkling performance from Pauline Collins. Seeing her grow, figure out what she wants and stick to a new path is genuinely pretty special, and I particularly like the way it kind of feels a bit vignette-y in parts? The sequence with her old school friend is a particular delight. 7/10.

This is not Lewis’ first foray in a World War II drama as his breakthrough role was in HBO’s hit and groundbreaking drama Band of Brothers, starring as Easy Company leader Richard ‘Dick’ Winters. Easy was deployed on D-Day and played a critical role in the capture of Utah Beach and towns further inland throughout the campaign.

Coincidentally, Andrew Scott also starred in Band of Brothers‘ D-Day episode as a member of the 101st Airborne who got separated from his platoon and briefly joined up with Winters and Easy.

The Return of Martin Guerre (1983). In medieval France, some villagers challenge a man's claim of identity when he (as he says) returns home from some time in the army.

I didn't know much about this case going in, but have read about it pretty compulsively since finishing it. What a fascinating story, and one this movie depicts with a lot of humanity and empathy. It's a mystery, it's a romance, it's a harrowing story about identity and worth, with some pretty killer costuming and a distinct tone. If anything, I do wish though that we'd gotten a bit more of a sense of certain dynamics, but overall, it's a really interesting period crime drama. 8/10.
