BERNKASTEL's Letter

The immediate thing that stands out here is who the letter is meant for, when you think of Bern's beloved friend the only person I can think of would be Lambda but... that's the one person it can't be due to the content of the letters. I don't think she would describe Featherine as her friend, either...

....but the description here makes it hard to think of it as anyone BUT Featherine. Also talking about Beatrice as if she is stronger than them is interesting, too, since later parts of the story make it obvious the voyager witches are on a higher level than her, but this was released with ep3 so, so both the audience's and Bern's knowledge is limited.

Bernkastel identifies rule X, which in Higurashi was Himamizawa Syndrome, obviously, that isn't in Umineko but I think we can take that to mean Bernkastel realized the rotating cast of accomplices in each tale.

Rule Y in Higurashi was Takano/Tomitake's death, but in this case, I think it can mean that everyone dies at the end ie the bomb, the fact that she mentions that Lambdadelta touched it but didn't reach it, it is probably referring to Emergency Manual 34. Emergency Manual left a bunch of people who did know the answer while the bomb leaves none, so you can certainly say that it is stronger than it.

Bernkastel has no fucking clue what Rule Z is, though, which certainly puts a hamper on this approach to solving Umineko haha.

The maze having an indefinite, ever-changing shape is a good description of the catbox, though, so I guess she got that the goal she wanted to be reached is a lot fuzzier than the goal Takano had for Higurashi.

Bern has understood that Beatrice is only a witch because of the catbox, though. Bernkastel's feelings on Featherine are a lot more mixed than she would admit to her face, it seems.

This letter gives a pretty strong hint about the roulette accomplices and some early hints at the bomb, as well as set up for future characters... weird that it is locked to post-game in this version though. Also makes it a bit more clear how much Bernkastel knew at the time, it's a little hard to gauge in just the episodes how much the witches know.

The above poem is some interesting early theming that I think can help hint at Battler's promise, especially if coupled with Shannon's words later.

A pairing that I love: idrc about shipping I'm ngl. I like most of the canon pairings. But aside that, the one unpopular ship I do like is angebeato.

A pairing that I despise: I forget his name but that one guy who didn't make it into the game x battler. It makes my inner hater beast unleash

I’m kinda curious, because you post a few of them. What are your favorite DRV3 pairings? (Also if you want to throw your favorite Umineko pairings in there too that’d be cool.)

As it stands now? Well, I’d say the ask I answered here is still pretty accurate - Saimota and Oumota, Kaemugi, etc being some of the bigs ones with others listed there as well. There are a few characters I still don’t know that well (ex Tenko, Rantaro, Ryoma) too who I can definitely see that changing for, but for the most part I basically want to give both Kaito and Kaede a harem lmao -

oh man Umi ships though… there’s a lot. 8′D fan favourites like BatoBeato and Lambda x Bern of course - apparently my favourite girl ships are all extrovert blonde x reserved blue hair?? - parent ships, Ange x Mammon, Will x Lion and Erika x Dlanor. As far as ‘out there’ ships go, Battler x Kanon was my first ship going into the series and I’ll stand by it damnit, also Battler x Ronove is hilarious and Lion X Beatrice is true end game material for when both Battler and Will are far too incompetent/rude, respectively ~

MAY 23: Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942)

The Swiss journalist, photographer, and lesbian icon, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, was born on this day in 1908.

One of the many photographs of Annemarie Schwarzenbach taken by her close friend and most likely her lover, Marianne Breslauer (x). 

Annemarie Minna Renée Schwarzenbach was born on May 23, 1908 in Zurich, Switzerland. Her family afforded her a privileged life, her father being a wealthy business who worked in the silk industry and her mother being the daughter of a prominent general in the Swiss army. Annemarie’s mother was also bisexual and an artist herself who loved photography; Renée Schwarzenbach’s bisexuality could possibly have been the reason Annemarie’s penchant for dressing in boy’s clothes and participating in “boy’s activities” was not punished during her childhood. She would later attend the University of Zurich, where she began having relationships with women.

One of Annemarie’s first serious partners was Erika Mann, daughter of the famous writer Thomas Mann. The two met in 1930 and although their romantic relationship would not last long, she, Erika, and Erika’s gay brother Klaus would all three remain lifelong friends. It was while living with Klaus in Berlin that Annemarie was introduced to hard drugs and the party lifestyle. A close friend, Ruth Landshoff, would later write that she “lived dangerously. She drank too much. She never went to sleep before dawn.” With the rise of the Nazis to power, she became estranged from her family, who were Nazi sympathizers and resented Annemarie’s antifascist beliefs and friendship with the Jewish Mann family.

Annemarie photographed with her lover Ella Maillart. Ella was a fellow travel writer and the two embarked on expansive travels together to places such as Afghanistan and Turkmenistan (x).

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Annemarie produced over 170 articles and 50 photo reports for Swiss, German, and American magazines. She would spend the majority of her life traveling and writing around Europe with colorful companions such as the photographer Marianne Breslauer, the Manns, and her eventual husband, Achille-Claude Clarac. Achille was a gay French diplomat who sought marriage for the same reason Annemarie did: social convenience. With the cover of her marriage, she was free to seduce many women on her travels, including ethnologist Ella Maillart, the daughter or a Turkish Ambassador, Baronessa Margot von Opel, and the writer Carson McCullers.

As the years went on, Annemarie’s drug addiction worsened. Despite her several suicide attempts, it was a biking accident that would eventually lead to Annemarie’s death on November 15, 1942. After falling from her bike in September of that year and sustaining a serious head injury, she was shut up in a clinic by her family, where she was misdiagnosed and was refused access to any visitors that were not members of the Schwarzenbach family. Although her mother destroyed her letters and diaries following her death, the people she called her true family – her LGBT friends and companions – preserved her professional writings and photographs in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern.

A canon of many self-cest ships

I was finishing the Umineko no Naku Koro Ni manga while thinking of themes to talk about for Femslash February and well, this idea naturally popped-up.

Umineko is a canon in which a good amount of characters have multiple/alternate identities, which are at times depicted as different characters that can interact together. The story deals quite a bit with identities, the faces we show others, the ideal self we try to emulate, the self we need to build to protect ourselves/survive, etc.

How metaphorical or literal the depiction of some of those alternate selves is supposed to be is up to the readers to decide.

An early occurence (the first clear one, if I’m not misremembering) happens with Ushiromiya Eva, the second child and first daughter of the patriarch of the family.

When she was younger, she used to vent her troubles and issues to another version of herself, that represented her strong will to not give in to the partiarchal and extremely sexist views of her family. This other-self would encourage her and push her forwards, but it could also be seen as a vessel for all her frustrations, festering over the years. When Eva comes back to talk inheritance problems with her siblings to their father, this “younger self” reappears to encourage her in her attempts to get the title of family head for herself.

In the manga, the way it’s depicted definitely pinged my self-cest radar, with the multiple loving embraces they are depicted in. The interactions between those two Eva are both heartwarming at times, and scary when this “ghost of the past” appears to have a corrupting influence.

When it comes to it though, it’s hard to do better and shippier than Erika and Bernkastel.

Bernkastel is a witch, a being of which the existence is questioned by the story, and once again left up to the reader. If we do believe that witches exist, their powers make them appear like superior beings. With her magic, Bern brings an alternate human version of herself into the story to use as her pawn and shake things up. Erika is more than happy to serve, calling Bern her “master” and doing everything she can to get rewarded and acknowledged by her, fearing more than anything to disappoint her and be punished and cast away.

It’s a very interesting fucked-up relationship of two versions who have a really similar core in multiple aspects of their personality, but the power imbalance and the nature of their being show them in a very different light. Bern is at the top and Erika revers her for that while also wishing to reach such a position too to escape her lower condition and beat on the weak in turn. But inevitably, she is cruelly and sadistically brought low and disparaged by Bern for her failures.

Last but not least... I’d love to talk about our lovely lady Beatrice, the Golden Witch. Except how do you talk about Beato without falling into huge spoilers territory? Her true identity is the main mystery of Umineko, meaning it’s a complicated thing to discuss.

So let’s just mention that at one point, two “younger” versions of Beatrice, without all her memories, spend a good amount of time interacting together and trying to find the secret behind themselves. The way they go about it is certainly not devoid of innuendo, there’s even a bit of a class S kink, with the more mature version getting called “big sister/onee-sama”.

Anyway, the motto of Umineko is “Without love, it can’t be seen”, which clearly means that those who can see their alternative selves are in dire need of love from them (what? no I’m totally not bullshitting, I swear!)
