clementine was born in cleveland georgia to her adoring parents who were highschool sweethearts. her father was a rancher and her mother was a homemaker. they predominantly had cattle, alongside a handful of horses, and then somehow (lemmie's pleading) winded up with a flock of ducks and a few donkeys. she spent most of her time outside with the animals and truly couldn't have been happier.

tw: infidelity when she was thirteen, her parents separated, the reasoning unknown to her (coughherfatherhadanaffaircoughandgotanotherwomanpregnantcough) but that was when her mother decided to do something for herself and go back to school, though instead of choosing somewhere in the state or even the country, she decided on chile, starting off as a student, and then going on to later become a professor at the very same university. there started the years of travelling back and forth from one home to the other, during the school year clem would stay in chile with her mom, and during her breaks at school she would fly back to georgia to be with her dad, though christmas' were traded off each year. post school, it was really up to her to decide when and where she spent most of her time, and while she does still go back to visit her father (and all the animals) she decided to stay in chile full time.

With wildfire threatening, Lake Tahoe prepares for emergency (AP) The decision to flee their home Thursday in the mountains above Lake Tahoe became clear when Johnny White and Lauren McCauley could see flames on the webcam at their local ski resort. Even as ash rained down under a cloud of heavy smoke, the couple wasn’t panicked because they had an early warning to leave their home near Echo Summit, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the lake, and wanted to avoid last-minute pandemonium if the wildfire continued its march toward the tourist destination on the California and Nevada border. Firefighters were facing changing weather conditions that could push the fire closer to the Tahoe Basin, a home to thousands and recreational playground for millions of tourists who visit the alpine lake in summer, ski at the many resorts in winter and gamble at its casinos year-round. Fires in California have destroyed around 2,000 structures and forced thousands to evacuate while also blanketing large swaths of the West in unhealthy smoke.

The Western air crisis (NYT) “We have had smoke in the sky literally since the third week of July,” Amy Ginder, a 47-year-old resident of Reno, said. “We have been inhaling toxins for five weeks now. You can’t be outside. You can’t breathe. You can’t see the sun.” In response, Ginder has stopped jogging outdoors. “If it were just this summer, you’d just suck it up and move on,” she said. “But it isn’t. It’s the realization that this is our future.” Smoke-clogged air has become a regular part of life in the American West. Climate change has increased the frequency of droughts, extreme heat and, by extension, large wildfires. The smoke then drifts across large parts of the Pacific Coast and Mountain West. Sometimes, it even reaches the East Coast. One measure of the problem: In several places yesterday—including Bend, Ore.; an area north of Sacramento; and Lake Tahoe—air pollution reached levels that can damage lungs when people spend time outdoors. Phil Abernathy, a Lake Tahoe resident who decided to flee the area in search of cleaner air, told The Times that simply inhaling can feel like a “sizable man is standing on my chest.”

Tropical Storm Ida Forms in Caribbean, Heading for Louisiana (Bloomberg) Tropical Storm Ida has formed in the Caribbean and is forecast to a grow into a powerful hurricane in the days ahead, wreaking havoc across the Gulf of Mexico and ultimately crashing into the U.S coast. Ida, the ninth storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, is swirling past Jamaica, with top winds of 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour. It’s forecast to strike Cuba Friday, reach hurricane strength over the gulf Saturday and make landfall in Louisiana or Mississippi late Sunday or Monday. “Sunday is the anniversary of Katrina—it seems like a particularly cruel date for a hurricane landfall in Louisiana,” said Ryan Truchelut, president of Weather Tiger LLC. said in an interview. The storm’s winds are forecast to peak at 110 miles per hour (177 kilometers per hour), which would put it just below Category 3 major hurricane status on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm.

Nowhere To Go (AP) The earthquake in Haiti killed and injured thousands, and wiped away thousands of homes. Now, a more grim reality is setting in for those who survived and were hospitalized—if released, they have nowhere to go. 25-year-old Jertha Ylet came to the hospital on August 14, unconscious and with a crushed leg. Her 5-year-old daughter survived unharmed, but her father and two other relatives were killed, her brother seriously injured and her house destroyed. A surgeon had put a metal rod in her lower left leg, but Ylet hadn’t been out of bed or tried to walk since she arrived. Ylet was discharged Thursday—the hospital needed her bed for other patients. “I said to the doctor, ‘I don’t have any place to go,’” Ylet said. Medical staff is sympathetic, but pragmatic. The beds are needed. “After someone gets well they have to go.” In the first days after the earthquake, the hospital was overwhelmed with patients. The injured lay on patios and breezeways awaiting care. Now there are still people in those areas, but they’re discharged patients or others never admitted at all but who are coming for the donations of food and water and clothing arriving at the hospital daily.

Biden: ‘We Will Hunt You Down’ (Foreign Policy) Hours after the Islamic State launched a coordinated suicide bomb attack among the desperate crowds gathered outside Kabul’s international airport on Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden vowed to continue evacuations—and to retaliate against the perpetrators. “Know this: We will not forgive, we will not forget,” he said in a speech from the White House. “We will hunt you down and make you pay.” The attack killed more than 70 Afghan civilians and 13 U.S. troops in at least two blasts, leaving the area around the airport in chaos. Members of the Islamic State group’s local branch, known as Islamic State-Khorasan, detonated suicide vests at the airport’s Abbey Gate and outside the nearby Baron Hotel. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the attack, which underscores the security challenges the group faces as it formally establishes a government in Kabul. It remains unclear whether a military response to the bombings is already being undertaken, and if the United States has adequate capacity on the ground to carry it out. [Note: The death toll has been updated to as many as 169 Afghans.]

As NATO countries end their Kabul airlift, many interpreters, embassy staffers and drivers are left behind (Washington Post) Thousands of Afghans who put their lives at risk to work with America's NATO allies have been left behind as the military evacuations wrap up and they hunker down in fear over Taliban reprisals. Britain became the latest nation to announce an end to its airlifts on Friday, as Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told LBC radio that evacuations would end in hours. The military has airlifted nearly 14,000 people out over the past two weeks, but “the sad fact is that not every single one will get out,” he said, with up to 1,100 eligible Afghans who “didn’t make it.” Other countries fell further short of their targets. Germany, whose last soldiers flew out of Afghanistan on Thursday evening, said it had rescued around 4,000 Afghans—far shy of the 10,000 people it had identified as at risk. From Berlin to Ottawa, questions have been raised as to why more was not done to save those who were vulnerable sooner. “I think humanity has fallen apart,” said one employee of a local nongovernmental organization contracted by the German government. He shared a photo of what he said was one of his colleagues, beheaded by the Taliban when they took over his neighborhood. “It feels as though I am so alone,” he said, his voice breaking as he spoke. European governments have said they were left with little choice but to end their military rescue operations as the United States pulls out.

Afghanistan’s Islamic State (AP) The Islamic State offshoot that Americans blame for Thursday’s deadly suicide attacks outside the Kabul airport coalesced in eastern Afghanistan six years ago, and rapidly grew into one of the more dangerous terror threats globally. The Islamic State’s Central Asia affiliate sprang up in the months after the group’s core fighters swept across Syria and Iraq, carving out a self-styled caliphate, or Islamic empire, in the summer of 2014. The group started as several hundred Pakistani Taliban fighters, who took refuge across the border in Afghanistan after military operations drove them out of their home country. Other, like-minded extremists joined them there, including disgruntled Afghan Taliban fighters unhappy with what they—unlike the West—saw as the Taliban’s overly moderate and peaceful ways. As the Taliban pursued peace talks with the United States in recent years, discontented Taliban increasingly moved to the more extremist Islamic State, swelling its numbers. Many were attracted to the Islamic State’s violent and extreme ideology, including promises of a caliphate to unite the Islamic world, a goal never espoused by the Taliban.

Afghanistan got just 5 minutes of coverage on the network newscasts last year, analysis says (The Week) The current chaos in Afghanistan may be dominating the headlines, but in 2020, the war reportedly received just a handful of minutes of network news coverage throughout the entire year. According to analysis from the Tyndall Report via the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, the national evening newscasts on CBS, ABC, and NBC in 2020 devoted just five minutes to Afghanistan coverage. The coverage came in February 2020, when the Trump administration announced the Doha agreement with the Taliban to end the war. "Five minutes!" Andrew Tyndall writes. "Such were the demands on the news agenda of the looming coronavirus pandemic in the early spring of 2020. Coverage of all other developments was eclipsed by COVID. The networks had long since given up covering the war as a war." [Since 2014] they "have treated the role of the military there as an afterthought," he said.

New Zealand extends virus lockdown (AP) New Zealand’s government has extended a strict nationwide lockdown through Tuesday as it tries to quash its first outbreak of the coronavirus in six months. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Friday the government expects to keep Auckland, where most of the cases have been found, in full lockdown for at least two more weeks. But she expects most other parts of the country can ease restrictions slightly from Wednesday. The announcement came as health authorities reported 70 new daily cases, the most yet in the outbreak, which has grown to nearly 350 cases in total. Ardern said there was evidence the lockdown was working and new case numbers were beginning to level off. She said she remained committed to the strategy of eliminating the virus entirely.

Gunmen release students in northern Nigeria 3 months later (AP) Gunmen have released some of the children kidnapped from a school in northern Nigeria back in May, some of whom were as young as 5 years old, the school’s head teacher said late Thursday. He could not confirm the exact number freed. Authorities have said that 136 children were abducted along with several teachers when gunmen on motorcycles attacked the Salihu Tanko Islamic School in Niger state. Other preschoolers were left behind as they could not keep pace when the gunmen hurriedly moved those abducted into the forest. The release came a day after local media quoted one parent as saying six of the children had died in captivity. The government has been unable to halt the spate of abductions for ransom. As a result, many schools have been forced to close due to the concerns about the kidnapping risk.

Gig apps for a pandemic economy (AP) For months, Gabrielle Walker had been looking for a part-time job. Then one day, Walker, a 19-year-old student at University College London, was scrolling through TikTok and stumbled on a video about an app called Stint, which helps students earn money by working brief temporary stints at places like restaurants and bars that require little training or experience. Walker downloaded the app, took a 15-minute intro course and days later snagged a job polishing cutlery at a Michelin-star restaurant in London—for one day. Between May and June, she took on several other gigs, squeezing them into her class schedule where she could. my take on a possible plot for FB3 (aka how the elusive aunt may be a centerpiece to it)

first, there’s a meeting of Grindelwald’s followers in Berlin - Dumbledore attends, alone and concealed, but Credence spots him (as Grindelwald tampered with the concealment spell) and they face off outside - he then makes an off-hand (or even specific) comment about their connection

Dumbledore returns to Hogwarts with the information

around this time, one of his contacts (Lally perhaps), but much more likely Yusuf, found out that the woman who was with Credence on the ship in 1901 used a fake name/identity when going onboard, and is still alive - she’s covered up her tracks post 1901, and her trail has been lost in Brazil

he sends the group there to find her - either because Credence’ comment was vague and she’s the only one who knows the truth, or because it was specific and he needs her testimony to convince him

at the same time, Grindelwald finds out about her (via a vision) - (it’s also possible that a double agent within Dumbledore’s contacts discloses to him that the woman on the ship may be in Brazil due to a vision, setting off the voyage to Rio)

he sends, among others, Credence, Queenie and Abernathy to Rio to find her, along with Grimmson (who has orders to be faster without their knowledge and poison her, making it look like she passed from a disease just before they could reach her)

the phoenix order group find her fake name in a non-magic register in Rio de Janeiro (she’s a muggle, and the register is a real thing - there was a migration wave from Sweden around the turn of the century (Linda Santiago, the actress, is swedish)) and they find out that she followed the settlers from the country to start a new life further in the country

until they have solid information about her wherabouts (by surveilling them) and to keep Credence from looking for her himself, Grimmson tries to distract him and their group by travelling to meetings with followers across the country

How Denim Became a Political Symbol of the 1960s

In the spring of 1965, demonstrators in Camden, Alabama, took to the streets in a series of marches to demand voting rights. Among the demonstrators were “seven or eight out-of-state ministers,” United Press International reported, adding that they wore the “blue denim ‘uniform’ of the civil rights movement over their clerical collars.”

Though most people today don’t associate blue denim with the struggle for black freedom, it played a significant role in the movement. For one thing, the historian Tanisha C. Ford has observed, “The realities of activism,” which could include hours of canvassing in rural areas, made it impractical to organize in one’s “Sunday best.” But denim was also symbolic. Whether in trouser form, overalls or skirts, it not only recalled the work clothes worn by African Americans during slavery and as sharecroppers, but also suggested solidarity with contemporary blue-collar workers and even equality between the sexes, since men and women alike could wear it.

To see how civil rights activists adopted denim, consider the photograph of Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph Abernathy marching to protest segregation in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. Notably, they are wearing jeans. In America and beyond, people would embrace jeans to make defiant statements of their own.

Scholars trace denim’s roots to 16th-century Nîmes, in the South of France, and Genoa, in northwestern Italy. Many historians suspect that the word “denim” derives from serge de Nîmes, referring to the tough fabric French mills were producing, and that “jeans” comes from the French word for Genoa (Gênes). In the United States, slaveowners in the 19th century clothed enslaved fieldworkers in these hardy fabrics; in the West, miners and other laborers started wearing jeans after a Nevada tailor named Jacob Davis created pants using duck cloth—a denimlike canvas material—purchased from the San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss. Davis produced some 200 pairs over the next 18 months—some in duck cloth, some in denim—and in 1873, the government granted a patent to Davis and Levi Strauss & Co. for the copper-riveted pants, which they sold in both blue denim and brown duck cloth. By the 1890s, Levi Strauss & Co. had established its most enduring style of pants: Levi’s 501 jeans.

Real-life cowboys wore denim, as did actors who played them, and after World War II denim leapt out of the sagebrush and into the big city, as immortalized in the 1953 film The Wild One. Marlon Brando plays Johnny Strabler, the leader of a troublemaking motorcycle gang, and wears blue jeans along with a black leather jacket and black leather boots. “Hey Johnny, what are you rebelling against?” someone asks. His reply: “Whaddaya got?”

In the 1960s, denim came to symbolize a different kind of rebelliousness. Black activists donned jeans and overalls to show that racial caste and black poverty were problems worth addressing. “It took Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington to make [jeans] popular,” writes the art historian Caroline A. Jones. “It was here that civil rights activists were photographed wearing the poor sharecropper’s blue denim overalls to dramatize how little had been accomplished since Reconstruction.” White civil rights advocates followed. As the fashion writer Zoey Washington observes: “Youth activists, specifically members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, used denim as an equalizer between the sexes and an identifier between social classes.”

But denim has never belonged to just one political persuasion. When the country music star Merle Haggard criticized hippies in his conservative anthem “Okie From Muskogee,” you bet he was often wearing denim. President Ronald Reagan was frequently photographed in denim during visits to his California ranch—the very picture of rugged individualism.

And blue jeans would have to rank high on the list of U.S. cultural exports. In November 1978, Levi Strauss & Co. began selling the first large-scale shipments of jeans behind the Iron Curtain, where the previously hard-to-obtain trousers were markers of status and liberation; East Berliners eagerly lined up to snag them. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, when Levis and other American jean brands became widely available in the USSR, many Soviets were gleeful. “A man hasn’t very much happy minutes in his life, but every happy moment remains in his memory for a long time,” a Moscow teacher named Larisa Popik wrote to Levi Strauss & Co. in 1991. “The buying of Levi’s 501 jeans is one of such moments in my life. I’m 24, but while wearing your jeans I feel myself like a 15-year-old schoolgirl.”

Back in the States, jeans kept pushing the limits. In the early 1990s, TLC, one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, barged into the boys’ club of hip-hop and R&B wearing oversized jeans. These “three little cute girls dressed like boys,” in the words of Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, one of the group’s members, inspired women across the country to mimic the group’s style.

Curiously, jeans have continued to make waves in Eastern Europe. In the run-up to the 2006 presidential elections in Belarus, activists marched to protest what they characterized as a sham vote in support of an autocratic government. After police seized the opposition’s flags at a pre-election rally, one protester tied a denim shirt to a stick, creating a makeshift flag and giving rise to the movement’s eventual name: the “Jeans Revolution.”

The youth organization Zubr urged followers: “Come out in the streets of your cities and towns in jeans! Let’s show that we are many!” The movement didn’t topple the government, but it illustrated that this everyday garment can still be revolutionary.

It might seem odd to outlaw a pigment, but that’s what European monarchs did in a strangely zealous campaign against indigo. The ancient blue dye, extracted in an elaborate process from the leaves of the bushy legume Indigofera tinctoria, was first shipped to Europe from India and Java in the 16th century.

To many Europeans, using the dye seemed unpleasant. “The fermenting process yielded a putrid stench not unlike that of a decaying body,” James Sullivan notes in his book Jeans. Unlike other dyes, indigo turns cloth vivid blue only after the dyed fabric has been in contact with air for several minutes, a mysterious delay that some found unsettling.

Plus, indigo represented a threat to European textile merchants who had heavily invested in woad, a homegrown source of blue dye. They played on anxieties about the import in a “deliberate smear campaign,” Jenny Balfour-Paul writes in her history of indigo. Weavers were told it would damage their cloth. A Dutch superstition held that any man who touched the plant would become impotent.

Governments got the message. Germany banned “the devil’s dye” (Teufelsfarbe) for more than 100 years beginning in 1577, while England banned it from 1581 to 1660. In France in 1598, King Henry IV favored woad producers by banning the import of indigo, and in 1609 decreed that anyone using the dye would be executed.

Still, the dye’s resistance to running and fading couldn’t be denied, and by the 18th century it was all the rage in Europe. It would be overtaken by synthetic indigo, developed by the German chemist Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Adolf von Baeyer—a discovery so far-reaching it was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1905.

how tall are they?

maya is really tall! she’s 5′11″ which is about an inch shorter than i imagine her husband to be but he’s a king so what does he have to worry about?

how do they tend to dress?

maya has always had a very classy style, even before she was queen of cordonia. she loves bright colours and floral patterns, and really adores light and breezy things. she does miss the functionality of jeans now that she’s a royal, but she makes do with some very classy pantsuits even though pixelberry are cowards and won’t give them to me.

do they like how they look?

yes! maya’s grandma always made sure that she got her self-worth from her actions and the way she treated people as opposed to how she looks, and maya is really proud of herself and doesn’t really care all that much about what other people think of her!

are they an only child or do they have any siblings?

maya’s an only child! i hate to think that her parents or family just don’t care enough to come to her wedding, so my headcanon for her is that her parents died in a car crash when she was young, and so she was cared for by her only surviving relative, her grandmother, until her death in maya’s first year of college. since she doesn’t have any living family that’s why no one was there like seriously what the fuck pixelberry

are they a morning person or night owl?

morning person! maya’s friends always joked that she had the soul of an 80 year old woman but she really does go to bed pretty early all the time and she likes to wake up to the sun! she loves sunshine and she loves hearing birds singing in the morning, which is her favourite part about being at duchy valtoria!

are they a cat person or a dog person?

maya’s a dog person! she likes cats, and she loved the last cat her grandmother had very much, but she’s always liked dogs a lot more by sheer virtue of being an outdoorsy kid who loves to be playing and getting muddy in the back yard, which was much easier to do with a dog than a cat.

got any favourite foods?

LOVES rogan josh and barbecue. anything spicy or smokey your home girl got it covered, but her favourite dessert is cheesecake!

how about favourite drinks?

maya loves traditional lemonade! she had a lemon tree in her back garden growing up, and her grandma taught her how to make lemonade from the fresh lemons. she also grew up drinking tea with her gran, but she isn’t really one for caffeine in general and much prefers hot chocolate since she has a sweet tooth.

what are their favourite movies/tv shows?

maya LOVES period dramas. laps that shit up. stans the jennifer ehle and colin firth pride and prejudice adaptation, could rewatch anna karenina time and time again and actually really liked the great gatsby movie, plus she tends to like shakespeare movies with kenneth branagh, or recordings of stage productions from the globe theatre which she has yet to visit, but as queen of cordonia she wants to see her favourite play (othello) put on there!

do they have any hidden talents?

maya is a really good singer! it’s only been busted out at karaoke, but she’s also an excellent mathematician and can do really complex equations in her head, which scares... pretty much all of her friends.

do they believe in love at first sight?

maya is a romantic at heart, and her grandma used to tell her stories about how she and her husband fell in love at first sight, so she’d like to believe it was true! it’s part of the reason that she decided to go to cordonia in the first place, because of the connection she felt with the then-prince.

maya isn’t afraid of water or the ocean, but she is afraid of sharks and jellyfish. she prefers to swim in fresh water or pools, but there was a period where she was terrified of crocodiles and alligators as well despite not living anywhere near crocodiles or alligators.

carrie underwood singalongs and those 80′s aerobics videos.... maxwell bought her a pair of legwarmers for her birthday because of it and she cherishes them

what was their dream job as a kid? is it still their dream?

maya wanted to be a vet when she was little, but when she got older she realized she was too squeamish for it ahskshs. it’s not really her dream anymore, but she’s happy with where she is in life!

no, she was a very careful child!

not really no! she’s been involved in a few marches/protests that met skirmishes with law enforcement, but she’s never been arrested or charged with anything, except for like. the trouble in cordonia i guess.

it is my greatest heacanon that maya used the money she inherited from her grandma to get through college with a degree in communications, and before she was waitress-ing she’d been working pretty long-term for a business in PR but her boss was paying her unfair wages and refused to negotiate so she just quit and was looking for another job, so having justin/anton assigned as her PR ‘team’ was a grievous insult to her ahskshs. another fact is before the royal heir i already decided that maya and hajime have three kids: hollis (after maya’s dad), charlainne “charlie” (after her mum) and oliver, in that order, and the third fact is that her favourite colour is green!

leon is 6′5″ which makes him the tallest of the ilb gang, even taller than parker who is still so in awe that someone managed to be bigger than him

leon is a frat boy jock with the countenance of a golden retriever. he has an extensive snapback collection, but for the most part his outfit is pretty easy just jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, lots of hoodies, some shorts and those big low-cut singlets etc etc

do they like how they look?

yeah lmao... the one downside is that sometimes people think he’s straight which he’s not about but like. self-confidence is sexy and i don’t fear god so none of my ocs do too. if someone talks shit about him leon will just beat them up ahskshsjsls

leon has elliot ofc, and i hc that his dad re-married and has two young daughters with his second wife, but leon doesn’t know them because he and his dad have virtually no relationship at all.

night owl! leon thinks the stillness of the night is really calming and he’s pretty energetic, but he’s also an early riser. he prefers nights but he also doesn’t sleep in very often since he likes to go for a run before the sun comes up while it’s still nice and cool, plus he usually gets to watch the sun rise on the way back!

are they a cat person or a dog person?

dog.... big, big fluffy dogs. it’s not really surprising when he’s basically just three golden retrievers and one kinda angry chihuahua in a human-shaped trenchcoat but tom gets a lot of no-context pictures of dogs all hours of the night.

leon loves cajun wedges. he thinks there’s an art to making them and he’ll stand by that, but he’s also a bit of a pizza snob and he splurges on wood-fired pizza for him and elliot on uber eats nights whenever he can, although he can’t really do that in pine springs.

not many people get it initially but leon can actually draw really well! most people think he’s just kind of a meatheaded jock, but his degree is in software engineering and he wants to get into making video games, which is something he decided to do because he loved playing games so much with elliot and he wanted to make something for his brother! he cleans up on rhythm games, and he also plays the piano and the guitar and can sing! he’s very talented!

not really? he wants to believe in romantic things like that, and he definitely believes in attraction at first sight, but he’s a little cynical about the idea of being able to love somebody just from a glance.

tom! he & tom are really happy together and one of their favourite things to do is make pancakes on sunday mornings for elliot, and then tom will read his book while sitting on leon’s back while he does pushups. domestic co-existence ahskshs.

leon has always been too bold for his own good, but he’s really not a fan of thunder or lightning and he gets really freaked out during storms.

initially, leon wanted to be an astronaut, but only so he could meet aliens. as he grew up he realized he didn’t really want to get involved in that field, especially since with his sports career he kind of looked like he had a set path anyway.

he’s broken his nose a couple of times and his toe twice, but other than that he’s been very careful because he kind of needs his bones in order to like... do sport.... which is what his scholarship is for.

At the opening three-hour session of the talks in Paris yesterday, the United States and North Vietnamese delegates met in a frontal clash. Familiar charges were thrown across the conference table, as W. Averell Harriman, chief American delegate, spoke of long-continued North Vietnamese “aggression,” and Xuan Thuy accused the United States of “monstrous crimes.” On the first critical issue, a cessation of the American bombing of North Vietnam, there was no shift from previously held positions. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.

On the military front, allied generals in Saigon said that the main thrust of enemy attacks on the city had been crushed. The statement was issued after enemy troops had withdrawn from the slum on the fringe of Saigon that has been the scene of bitter street fighting for seven days.

While the talks were going on, other parts of Paris blazed with banners and echoed cries of “De Gaulle Assassin!" as hundreds of thousands of students and workers joined in a 24-hour general strike and massive demonstration to protest “police repression” in student-police battles.

In a move that further strained relations with neighboring Communist countries, the Prague radio denounced articles in East Berlin, Warsaw and Moscow as slandering Czechoslovakia with “evil intent.” The official Czechoslovak party newspaper published a questionnaire asking readers, among other things, whether Communism could be compatible with democracy.

The Rev. aurora possuí dois segredos e meio, digamos assim. o primeiro e talvez o que mais assombre a garota é o fato dela mesmo ter desligado os aparelhos que mantinham seu irmão gêmeo vivo, indo contra a vontade de seus progenitores. contudo, devido à intensa conexão que tinha com o mais novo, ela simplesmente sabia que ele não aguentava mais sofrer e permanecer daquela forma tão angustiante e então, numa madrugada cuja lembrança ainda lhe é reprimida, ela — sem hesitar, findou a vida do irmão, que finalmente poderia descansar em paz.

seu segundo segredo está relacionado com a vida dupla que tenta manter oculta de seus colegas e familiares. pouco tempo após se instalar em paris, aurora tentou buscar formas de se sentir o mais viva possível e, dessa forma, passou a realizar atividades que, até então, eram totalmente fora de sua realidade. nesse contexto, ela começou a trabalhar como stripper e garçonete em bares de reputação duvidosa; apesar de não mais trabalhar ativamente nesses locais, a jovem por vezes ainda se vê na necessidade de retornar para aquela vida. dessa forma, em sua época mais sombria, rory acabou engravidando, mas, decidiu dar continuidade a sua gravidez — ausentando-se da AIFT quando começou a ficar perceptível afirmando que era um período sabático — mas acabou entregando a criança para adoção e retornando para sua antiga vida como se nada tivesse acontecido.

oooh boi ― here we go! então, primeiramente, gostaria de explicar os motivos que me levaram a escolher perséfone e dentre os quais, talvez o principal seja a dualidade que existe nela. ela se permite ser mais do que apenas o seria esperado de alguém com sua natureza, mais do que apenas a filha perfeita, mesmo que isso signifique ir contra alguém que ela ama muito, porque ela não pode trair o que acredita ser certo — porém, ela também está tentando descobrir quem ela é e qual seu real lugar no mundo, explorando novas possibilidade e s,e abrindo para uma experiência única, buscando assim outras maneiras além da que sempre lhe foi ensinada como sendo a correta / única. em síntese, acredito que há uma frase que simboliza muito bem o que perséfone represent, “life’s daughter, death’s bride. walks with heaven in her step and hell in her eyes.” e, no entanto, ela é muito mais. mais do que apenas a filha de sua mãe, mais do que a noiva de seu marido. ela é sua própria pessoa, ela é liberdade, uma liberdade para ser o que você quer e quem você quer ser. liberdade para continuar lutando por si mesmo e no que você escolheu acreditar.

e foi também por isso que escolhi a lili como faceclaim da aurora, eu acredito que a reinhart detém essa singela inocência bastante presente em seu olhar; porém, é possível observar alguns relances de uma escuridão latente. sabe, acho que ela representa muito bem a figura quase estereotipada da menina perfeita; sempre com seu rabo de cavalo, sua maquiagem quase neutra e cores pastel, ela também possuí um sorriso suave e sempre se preocupa com todo mundo que ama e com as pessoas em geral. entretanto, caramba, essa garota pode ser selvagem. seus olhos azuis bebê podem ser como um dia ensolarado e também como uma tempestade. lili captura a dualidade de perséfone / aurora com graça e dureza, estando as duas naturezas de kore presentes no caminho da atuação de lili. dois lados que querem prevalecer um sobre o outro, mas ela pode mantê-los em harmonia, mesmo com a luz e as trevas sendo tão diferentes.

aurora beatrisia kaiser-abernathy é a segunda filha de seus pais, vindo ao mundo poucos instantes antes de seu irmão gêmeo, aleksander. seus progenitores, diana abernathy e frances kaiser , ficaram surpresos com o nascimento dos gêmeos, já que tal evento aconteceu alguns anos após a morte do primogênito, thomas. o garoto nunca teve a chance de realmente viver; sua mãe nunca teve a oportunidade de abraçá-lo e seu pai nunca poderia brincar com ele — afinal, thomas acabou partindo poucos meses após seu nascimento, sua morte ocorrendo em virtude de uma doença congênita e hereditária. o casal ficou desolado e de luto pela perda prematura de seu primeiro filho, nem mesmo a notícia de uma nova gravidez trazendo algum tipo de alegria à casa do kaiser.

e foi nesse ambiente que aurora cresceu— ao contrário de aleksander, que parecia deter um magnetismo natural, alguém que irradiava alegria e sempre afetuoso com seus pais, a garota aparentava não possuir destaque algum. não foi exatamente uma infância triste ou dolorosa, apenas descartável e sem grande importância. frances e diana pareciam incapazes de depositar seu amor em ambos os filhos, alek tendo um maior espaço em seus corações ao que para rory, eles realmente não poderiam estar lá. é claro, eles garantiriam que a filha recebesse tudo o que precisasse, mas mesmo que se esforçassem, diana e frances não eram os pais que desejavam ser para sua filha mais velha. com algum tempo, aurora aprendeu que não era culpa dela e era incapaz de sentir qualquer mágoa para com alek, mas não havia muito que ela pudesse fazer sobre isso, por isso optou por não se importar. ela ficou apática com a vida e, por um tempo, pareceu não fazer diferença.

enfim, quando os gêmeos tinham por volta de 16 anos, a família foi vítima de uma nova tragédia, a vida de alek sendo praticamente arrancada de seus progenitores e de sua irmã após um acidente de carro. o veículo no qual o jovem estava foi atingido por um caminhão, a maioria dos amigos do garoto falecendo instantaneamente. contudo, alek não morreu com os outros, entretanto, seu coma não poderia ser revertido e o jovem kaiser nunca mais iria acordar. os pais eram totalmente contrários à sugestão de desligar os aparelhos que o mantinham vivo, mas aurora sentia em seu âmago que aquele era o real desejo do irmão e, por fim, ela mesma acabou ceifando o restante de vida de alek, que finalmente teria o descanso que tanto merecia.

após perder a pessoa que mais amava no mundo, a jovem ficou num estado quase catatônico, apenas existindo, sem qualquer anseio em prolongar sua tão vazia existência. contudo, em uma explosão de coragem advinda de um sonho com o gêmeo, a garotinha decidiu que não iria mais sobreviver, que sim, ela poderia e merecia ter uma vida real. então, ao contrário dos desejos de seus pais — ambos queriam que ela ficasse em casa e acompanhasse os negócios da família, a aurora decidiu descobrir quem ela realmente é. rory finalmente encontrou uma casa em cannes e em virtude de seu histórico exemplar e do sobrenome que carrega, acabou sendo aceita na AIFT.

bem, digamos que aurora faça parte do clube dos introvertidos; ela é uma pessoa muito fechada e não consegue criar laços com muita facilidade, mas quando ela consegue encontrar um espírito irmão, ela se entrega de corpo e alma, quase como se o relacionamento se tornasse uma parte dela. você vê, vivendo em uma casa como ela vivia, uma garota precisa aprender a existir sozinha, sem depender de ninguém para fazer alguma coisa. talvez seja por isso que ela é do jeito que é, tão fechada e não gosta muito da ideia de deixar as pessoas entrarem. de certa forma, todo esse receio que ela nutri em seu âmago é um mecanismo de defesa; rory tendo medo de que elas a deixem, ou pior, apenas não se importem com ela tudo, então ela tem medo de ser uma sombra novamente.

aurora era a deusa romana mítica do amanhecer, oh a ironia e os pais de rory deram-lhe esse nome porque seu nascimento ( assim como o de seu irmão gêmeo ) significou um novo começo para eles após a trágica morte de seu primogênito. o sobrenome dela significa imperador e eu juro que não fazia ideia.

she’s beauty, she grace, she’s in love with aliens and space. sIM, aurora é uma nerd que é aficcionada pelo espaço e simplesmente ama tudo relacionado ao universo e sua eterna imensidão !! quando jovem, acreditava que quando as pessoas morriam, elas se tornariam estrelas. parte dela gostaria de continuar acreditando nisso, principalmente em virtude da morte do irmão mas a vida matou o sonho que ela sonhava.

as vezes, ela fala sozinha, imaginando que seu irmão é capaz de escutá-la de alguma forma. antes mesmo dele partir ela já acreditava que possuíam essa conexão.

uma fã de shakespeare assumida; seu livro favorito é hamlet. ela sente uma conexão muito estranha com ophelia, mas rory ama literatura em geral. quando mais nova, e seus pais e irmão estavam ocupados demais, como de costume, ela passava horas na biblioteca de sua casa e aprendeu a ler quase só sozinha.

nasceu e cresceu na alemanha - mas viajou por muitos lugares e morou nos estados unidos e na itália por algum tempo antes de seguir para cannes.

rory tem algumas tatuagens e a maioria é minimalista - flores ou qualquer coisa relacionada ao espaço - e a maioria desses desenhos estão escondidos em seu corpo. o seu favorito é o que ela tem nas costelas, uma citação de shakespeare.

sua vida dupla é um segredo e há poucas pessoas no mundo que sabem que rory fez esse trabalho tão além do que seria imaginado para alguém como ela.

sempre teve uma atração bastante incomum pela morte, por isso uma das opções de carreira que ela gostaria de seguir é a de legista; mas, ela também adoraria ter sua própria floricultura.

1. The last book you finished - the secret history. This was my fourth (?) time reading it. I would die for Francis Abernathy.

2. what are you currently reading? - a few actually, because I tend to read a few books at once. Maurice by E.M Forster and Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Lately, all I’ve been reading are classics with gay themes.

3. what book are you planning to read next? - probably the goldfinch. There’s something about Donna Tartt’s books that makes them perfect for autumn. I think it’s the tired, existential academic aesthetic.

4. What was the last book you added to your tbr? - The Charioteer by Mary Renault. Another classic with gay themes. (I am nothing if not consistent)

5. Which book did you last re-read? - The secret history.

6. Which book was the last one you really loved? That’s hard because I’ve been re-reading all my faves recently. Probably Brideshead Revisited. I re-read it right at the end of summer and it felt very relevant and I cried a lot.

7. What was/were the last book/books you bought? - I am penniless and destitute at the moment, but I found an emergency £20 in the bottom of my bag and spent half of it on books today. I got the the trial by Kafka and a vindication of the rights of women by Mary Wollstonecraft (one of my personal heroes)
