The 2020 Annual Members Exhibition at the @berkeleyartcenter opens tomorrow, January 11th and runs through the 25th. There is an opening reception tomorrow from 6-8 pm to celebrate the works of more than 150 artists. While I am not able to make back to the Bay Area for the reception or exhibition, I hope those of you in the Bay Area can make the reception. It is a great chance to see the work and meet some of the amazing artists that I have had a pleasure to work and exhibit with over the years. In addition, there are artists whose work I have admired from afar (but still hope to meet one day in person) who are also part of the show. Throwback to painting at the Berkeley Arts Center in September. What a good time! I busted out this painting for the show, completing the underpainting from concept in less than a week, to painting all of the interesting parts (face and detailing) live for the show. Woo! Stop stealing, people! @bbc - you know better than to do this. #Repost @astriasuparak with @make_repost ・・・ BBC Arts just released an uncannily similar film essay to my Virtually Asian video (released in February). Both have a voiceover with similar points about techno-orientalism and Asian futures depicted by Hollywood science-fiction films, and use some of the same language, films, and even identical clips. 🤔 The editor of the BBC piece knows of my work and recommended that the writer watch my video while it was in the research/production phase. About the workshop: The Papermaker’s Pack is a “classroom” in a briefcase. Working with miniature tools and recyclable materials, this one-hour DIY-style papermaking workshop teaches participants how to make paper at home - making pulp for papermaking with a blender. In this crash-course, an unlimited number of participants can step up and try their hand at pulling a simple postcard sized sheet of paper. In ‘pay-it-forward’ fashion, participants will make a sheet of handmade paper but leave with paper made by someone else. Being part of this exchange process means surrendering authorship/ownership and donating individual efforts to relative strangers in the larger project work-flow. To elaborate, a workshop participant does not actually see the results of their own paper-making: all papers made during the workshop will be dried overnight and travel onwards to the next venue as to continue the on-going national public paper exchange.

One of the things that I love about the “Look At Me Hungry” exhibition is how the space is filled with objects that you want to run up to and see what is going on with each of them. Yesterday afternoon, I wrapped up three and a half weeks of artistic wonder with the “Walking and Talking” event with @berkeleyartcenter Executive Director Daniel Nevers, @mel_prest_k and 12 inquisitive participants. As we walked to the North Berkeley BART Station, we discussed our commuting times as a space for observation and finding presence as well as my studio process. We arrived at MacArthur BART and spent time on the platform making Memory Walks drawings before finishing up at Downtown Berkeley. I enjoyed talking with all the participants and sharing ideas and inspirations and also giving me new perspectives on what to look out for, listen to, and smell on my everyday walks. Thank you all so much for taking part in this event and especially to Mel and Daniel for giving me the opportunity to share my work in this unique way! While I am headed back to Tokyo tomorrow, “Look at Me Hungry” is on view until May 25th. Today is the start of the first full week of “Look at Me Hungry” at the @berkeleyartcenter ! It is also my last week in the Bay Area before heading back to Tokyo on Monday. But before that, this Saturday from 1 - 3 pm, I will be “Walking and Talking” with the @berkeleyartcenter Executive Director Daniel Nevers. We will start in the gallery, walk to BART, take a ride on BART, and make Memory Walk drawings before heading back to Berkeley. All the while, Daniel and I will be talking about my studio practice and how incorporate my commute into my practice and much more! I spent a rainy Monday evening in the warm confines of the @berkeleyartcenter fpr their collaborative event with @niadartcenter ”Listen to Me Hungry” featuring a conversation with @bingbingbun and @amandajeicher It was an inspiring and mind bending night of food, conversation and great company. It was wonderful to gain more insight into Xi’s working process and ideas. Also, it was a great way to spend quiet and contemplative time with all the works in the exhibition. Here are some photos of he exhibition, but honestly, photographs do not capture the beauty and dialogue in the individual works, between works and the gallery space. There is so much to see and take in and wish I could live in the space and take in the works. Thank you to everyone who came out to the opening reception for “Look At Me Hungry” tonight at the @berkeleyartcenter There were so many familiar faces from my college years through the present that I had a chance to reconnect with tonight along with new friends and faces. It was a great pleasure to share my new Memory Walks installation with everyone along with the works of five amazing artists and people @tealbennett @jamessansing @bingbingbun @sandra_ono_ and @joycenojima A special thanks goes to @mel_prest_k for assembling and including me in her dream lineup of artists. I also want to thank BAC director Daniel Nevers for his support and enthusiasm for this project.
