Ray Arcel was born on August 30, 1899, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents.

Arcel's mother passed away when he was only four years old, and Ray was brought up by his father. Before passing away, Ray's mother, born in Brooklyn, wanted to leave the Midwest and return to her New York roots. The Arcels subsequently relocated to Manhattan, first to the Lower East Side and then to West 106th Street in Harlem.

Growing up in New York in those days, Arcel told Ronald K. Fried in Corner Men: "You had to fight in those days. You lived in a neighbourhood where you were challenged every day. We were the only Jewish family there, but that's an old story. Wherever you go they tell you the same story." Arcel continued to say: "If you didn't fight you were yellow."

While training to be a boxer at Grupp's Gymnasium on 116th Street and Eighth Avenue, Arcel was under the tutelage of two great trainers in Dai Dolling and Frank "Doc" Bagley. Bagley once managed the great Gene Tunney and taught Ray the art of being a Cutman. Dolling was a Welshman who had trained the likes of Tunney, Al Brown, Jimmy McLarnin, Jack Britton, Ted Kid Lewis, and Johnny Dundee. Dolling taught Arcel about the individuality of each fighter and the need to train them accordingly.

After a short career as a fighter, Arcel became a trainer, and that is when he established his greatness.

Arcel's first world champion was Frankie Genaro, who won the Flyweight world title in 1923. In 1924, Ray led Abe Goldstein to victory against Joe Lynch for the bantamweight title.

This was only the start. Arcel's subsequent success with numerous all-time greats cemented him as arguably the greatest trainer in boxing history.

Arcel's beginnings as a trainer were during the days when boxing was the sport of all sports—when Jack Dempsey was the heavyweight champion.

"A Dempsey fight was magic. The minute he walked into the ring you could see smoke rising from the canvas," said Arcel when reminiscing decades later on the heyday of Dempsey in the ring. "You knew you were going to see a tiger let loose."

Arcel's career as a renowned boxing trainer spanned from the 1920s, training Benny Leonard, all the way to the '80s, when perhaps most famously, he trained Roberto Duran.

Arcel was the oracle of boxing. A man who saw Jack Dempsey fight in 1916; befriended and trained Benny Leonard; was in Barney Ross' corner the night Henry Armstrong became welterweight champion in 1938 and was with Ross in the following days while tending to his wounds; worked opposite Joe Louis on countless occasions, including the night Louis first became heavyweight champion in 1937 against James J. Braddock, and the night Ezzard Charles defeated Louis in Louis' final title fight in 1950. Arcel was then in Duran's corner in 1980 in both historic fights against Sugar Ray Leonard and then in Larry Holmes' corner in 1982 in the momentous heavyweight showdown against Gerry Cooney.

Between the '20s and '80s, the only full decade Arcel did not train fighters was the 60's.

For nearly twenty years, from 1954, Arcel had quit boxing and was working as a purchasing agent for a metal company. Then, in 1972, Arcel received a call from boxing manager Carlos Eleta Almarán. Arcel returned to work with Alfonso (Peppermint) Frazer, who won the title under Arcel's training from Nicolino Loche on March 10, 1972. The relationship between Arcel and Eleta developed further, and Eleta had a wild kid from the slums of Panama City, Panama, whom he wanted Arcel to train. Arcel's link-up with this kid from Panama cemented his legend, as Duran became arguably the greatest lightweight in history, rivaling another great 135-pounder, Arcel's previous student, Benny Leonard.

No other trainer has ever arguably worked with as many all-time greats, with names that Arcel trained including Benny Leonard, Ross, Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Freddie Steele, Tony Zale, John Henry Louis, Charles, Holmes, and Duran.

In a sport of toughness and meanness, Arcel was an anomaly. He was a very humble, polite, and respectful man. Arcel was described by sportswriter "Red" Smith as "the first gentleman of fistfighting."

Just like great trainers typically do, Ray always gave credit to the fighters, saying the trainer would be nothing without the fighter. He would merely give them pointers.

As Arcel told Ronald K. Fried in Corner Men, "Nobody had to teach Duran how to fight. The first day I saw him - not in New York, I saw him in Panama - I told everybody around him, 'Don't change his style. Leave him alone. I don't want anybody to ever tell him what to do. Let him fight."

Of course, Arcel did have a real impact on Duran's boxing. Alongside an old friend, Freddie Brown, a former cut-man of Rocky Marciano, they molded a young Duran into an all-time great champion. They fine-tuned Duran's style, with this power-punching brawler becoming a very defensively acute fighter while applying that pressure, boxing unlike any lightweight had for years. Under the tutelage of Arcel and Brown, Duran became one of the best and most crafty fighters in history.

An insight into Arcel's involvement in the career of his fighters can be seen through his handling of Charley Phil Rosenberg, who won the bantamweight title in 1925. Rosenberg, preparing for a title fight against Cannonball Martin on March 20, 1925, had three months to shed 37 pounds and meet the 118 pounds limit after having ballooned up to 155 pounds. Arcel went everywhere Rosenberg went and did everything Rosenberg did. Arcel did roadwork with him, prepared his meals, and slept in the adjoining bed.

In Ray Arcel: a Boxing Biography by Donald Dewey, Arcel spoke of the nights leading up to Rosenberg's fight against Martin. "I always had to sleep with one eye open. Charlie would get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and I would stand there with the door open. He kept cussing me. 'I just want to gargle,' he'd say. And I'd tell him, 'I'm watching your Adam's apple, Charlie. Don't swallow that water.'"

"After this fight is over," Rosenberg told Arcel, "I'm going to kill you."

Rosenberg beat Martin via a 15-round decision, and Arcel lived for another 69 years.

Arcel's wisdom was the stuff of legend.

"Ring sense is an art, a gift from God that flows out of a fighter like a great painting flows out of an artist, or a great book flows out of an author," Arcel once said. "Ring sense is a natural ability to cope with any situation in a fight. It cannot be taught."

Arcel's last appearance in the ring was in the corner of Holmes when the "Easton Assassin" stopped Cooney in 1982. Arcel worked alongside long-time friend Eddie Futch on this night.

Arcel trained three men who can be regarded as the greatest in the entire history of their divisions. Benny Leonard and Duran are regarded as two of the greatest lightweights ever. Ezzard Charles is arguably the greatest light heavyweight ever. To create such great fighters, Arcel's greatness as a trainer is evident.

Nobody taught boxing better while carrying them-self with the same sincerity and humility as the great Ray Arcel.

Nadia x MC (Benni)

Benni is not an angry person, not by any means. They’re not much of anything to most, if Nadia’s were being honest. They keep their head down and go about their business, lost in the thinnest of crowds, even when they’re walking hand in hand with the Countess. It’s a trait she’s always admired - envied, even - to be able to go about your life so effortlessly, to be able to avoid judging stares and poorly hushed whispers without even trying.

So to say the sight before her is shocking is quite the understatement.

Benni’s trembling from head to toe, their jaw clenched tight and expression ablaze as pale eyes stare daggers at the man across from them: Lucio. Somehow, even years after he paid for his cruelty through death, he’s still inflicting pain. And he’s doing it while smirking as always, just as vile a sight as it was when he was alive. But for once, it’s nowhere near the spectacle of Benni.

Benni, their hands balled into fists, knuckles white as the fabric dripping down their body. Benni, their slight frame stood protectively before Nadia, even if they only reach her chest. Benni, their typically calm expression contorted into pure rage, silent fury rippling through them in visible waves.

It starts in their shoulders, so tight the blades are nearly at their ears, then flows down their arms. It strikes their hands, short, clipped fingernails digging crescents in the palm of their hand before the rage finds their chest. It heaves with each ragged breath, shaking like no matter how much they breathe it’ll never be enough.

But they’re as wordless as ever, they’re lips never parting for a syllable, their hands never moving for a sign. If it weren’t for the shaking, the uncontrollable quivering Nadia might dismiss them for one of the marble statues Lucio was so fond of, a perfectly sculpted vision of a perfectly impossible sight.

PNS Demo ke DPRD Tuntut Bupati Morotai Mundur

Forbes – Puluhan Aparatur Sipil Negara (ASN) di Kabupaten Pulau Morotai, Maluku Utara (Malut) mengadukan Bupati setempat, Benny Laos ke DPRD Morotai karena mengeluarkan kebijakan melenceng dari etika birokrasi. "Kami mengadukan Bupati karena kebijakannya tidak berdasarkan aturan main dalam birokrasi mengenai kenaikan pangkat, mutasi dan punishment terhadap ASN," kata Koordinator ASN Morotai,Taufik Siapu sebagaimana dikutip detikcom dari antara, Rabu (21/11/2018). Sebelum menyampaikan pengaduan itu, puluhan ASN melakukan orasi dan konvoi keliling kota dengan meminta Bupati Benny Laos untuk mundur, massa ASN yang tergabung dalam barisan Koalisi Masyarakat Morotai Bersatu (KMMB) kemudian menuju ke gedung DPRD guna melakukan dengar pendapat. Di DPRD, keterwakilan massa ASN diterima oleh Ketua DPRD Morotai Fahri Hairudin, Wakil Ketua II, M. Rasmin Fabanyo, para anggota DPRD, Korlap Aksi Mujril Hi Dayan, Perwakilan KMMB Fandi Hi Latif, dan sejumlah kererwakilan dari ASN, yaitu Marwan Sidasi, Yongki Makangiras, Taufik Siapu. LAFC look to extend a storybook first season in Major League Soccer when they host Real Salt Lake in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs Knockout Round on Thursday night at Banc of California Stadium.

The expansion side had a chance to finish atop the Western Conference and earn a Knockout Round bye, but they fell to Sporting Kansas City, 2-1, on MLS Decision Day presented by AT&T.

Real Salt Lake, meanwhile, had to sweat out Decision Day after concluding their season a week earlier with a 3-0 loss at Portland. Mike Petke’s side, though, got the help they needed when the Houston Dynamo rallied to defeat the LA Galaxy, 3-2, securing the sixth and final berth in the postseason.

LAFC won both regular-season meetings, handing RSL one of their two losses at Rio Tinto Stadium, cruising to a 5-1 win on March 10. Diego Rossi struck fo a brace and Latif Blessing, Benny Feilhaber and Carlos Vela added one apiece after Joao Plata put the hosts in front on 20 minutes. On August 15, Christian Ramirez scored twice in a 2-0 victory at Banc of California Stadium.

After seven points in the three games prior, LAFC ended the regular season with a 2-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday.

Vela leveled from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after Seth Sinovic was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, canceling out Roger Espinoza’s first-half golazo for the hosts. But Daniel Salloi scored the decisive goal against the run of play, combining with Khiry Shelton for the 72nd minute winner.

While LAFC are disappointed not to earn the top seed in the Western Conference and the Knockout Round bye that comes with it, they are encouraged to play the game at Banc of California Stadium, where they are 9-1-7 this season.

“I don’t think we were any good today, so actually I’m pretty angry, but I also understand its the end of the regular season and the playoffs are coming very quickly,” said head coach Bob Bradley. “The focus turns immediately towards recovery and getting ready for Salt Lake.”

As the odd team out on Decision Day, Real Salt Lake had to just sit back and await their fate, hoping the Dynamo upset the Galaxy at StubHub Center. It didn’t look good early, with Ola Kamara scoring a pair of goals in a three-minute span in the first half.

But after Romell Quioto pulled the Dynamo back a goal, Mauro Manotas struck for a brace in a six-minute span late in the second half to beat the Galaxy, ending their playoff hopes and securing RSL’s spot in the postseason.

“It felt good because we deserve it,” Petke said. “We deserve it. We had more wins than them, I feel we have a better team than them, we’ve played better than them so to come down to the last day, I thought it was justified in my opinion. We had done enough point-wise. We had a target of points and we got our target points. The issue is that the line raised from last year.”

MLS mock draft 2018: Tomas Hilliard-Arce goes as top pick

Our group opted to continue recent MLS draft trends.

The 2018 MLS draft is on Friday, and with that comes SB Nation’s annual tradition of bringing bloggers together from all of our MLS blogs and holding a mock draft to get ready for the real thing.

In terms of trends this year among our team experts, the prevailing ideas in recent years of taking Generation Adidas (underclassmen) players high and mostly going for defenders otherwise continued.

Round 1

1. LAFC – Tomas Hilliard-Arce, D (Stanford): By combining the most MLS-ready talent with roster considerations like preferring American players because they won’t take up international slots, the big center back from Stanford was the obvious choice. He would be depth for the expansion team but would likely still see some playing time in 2018. ~ Alicia Rodriguez, Angels on Parade

2. LA Galaxy – Mason Toye, F (Indiana): The talented 6-foot-3 Generation Adidas signing gives the Galaxy a different look up top and doesn’t take up an international slot. ~ Mike Gray, LAG Confidential

3. D.C. United – Chris Mueller, F/M (Wisconsin): Mueller’s actual best position for United is a bit unclear (on the wing, or maybe even as a Luciano Acosta stand-in?), but the shifty, agile Wisconsin assist machine has the chops to immediately contend for a regular role in the gameday 18. ~ Jason Anderson, Black and Red United

4. Montreal Impact – Francis Atuahene, F/W (Michigan): A player that surpassed expectations in the combine, the winger has impressive speed and scoring ability; he is capable of playing in the MLS this season. ~ Emily Santella, Mount Royal Soccer

5. Minnesota United – Jon Bakero, F (Wake Forest): Bakero is originally from Spain, where his father spent almost a decade with FC Barcelona. The MAC Hermann trophy winner this year can play as a forward but also a little further back as a No. 10. Adrian Heath also has a positive track record of developing young forwards, including Cyle Larin and Abu Danladi. ~ Eli Hoff, E Pluribus Loonum

6. Orlando City – Wyatt Omsberg, D (Dartmouth): Omsberg is a defender with good size and is probably as safe a pick as any of the other top defenders given the unpredictability of the MLS SuperDraft at forecasting player careers. He would fill a position of need for the Lions, with an opportunity to learn from a veteran like Jonathan Spector and grow into a starting role over time. ~ Michael Citro, The Mane Land

7. Montreal Impact – Tristan Blackmon, D (Pacific): The Impact is currently lacking depth at the right back position and Blackmon could be a great option to fill this gap; his knack for scoring and creating offensive opportunities could become an interesting asset. ~ Mount Royal Soccer

8. New England Revolution – Joao Moutinho, D/M (Akron): There are questions on which position suits Moutinho best at the MLS level, but this is a Revs team that needs depth across the backline and at holding midfielder and a player of Moutinho’s caliber who can create from defense or midfield means he could see decent minutes as a rookie. ~ Jake Catanese, The Bent Musket

9. New England Revolution – Ema Twumasi, W (Wake Forest): The Revs have had success with guys like Kelyn Rowe, Teal Bunbury and even Juan Agudelo playing out wide, but Twumasi is an true winger. And while he doesn’t fit a need it’s hard to pass up a top five prospect like this, and Twumasi would be another creative piece in an already solid attacking group. ~ The Bent Musket

10. Real Salt Lake – Mohamed Thiaw, F (Louisville): The versatile forward will almost certainly be a depth pick, but with some time with RSL’s USL team, he may become an impact player in a couple years.

11. FC Dallas – Eddie Opoku, M (Virginia): With a Generation Adidas pick like Opoku still on the boards, FCD takes the best available player to help boost their roster. ~ Drew Epperley, Big D Soccer

12. San Jose Earthquakes – Drew Skundrich, M (Stanford): Back in the day, the Quakes collected this kind of central midfielder by the bushel, but the ranks have thinned out a bit, and the national champion who went to school just up the road could help in the center of the park.

13. Sporting KC – Rafael Andrade Santos, M (VCU): Sporting Kansas City need some new attacking blood with Latif Blessing and Benny Feilhaber headed to LAFC, so a flexible midfielder who can play the attacking midfielder or as a winger is a welcome addition. ~ Ben Gartland, The Blue Testament

14. Atlanta United – Tim Kubel, D (Louisville): The German will help fill a gap on the right side of Atlanta United’s new USL team’s back line. ~ Rob Usry, Dirty South Soccer

15. Chicago Fire – Ken Krolicki, M (Michigan State): A box-to-box midfielder with high energy and high upside, Krolicki could learn a lot under Bastian Schweinsteiger and Dax McCarty. ~ Ruben Tisch, Hot Time in Old Town

16. New York Red Bulls – Brian White, F (Duke): White was the free-scoring standout of RBNY’s 2017 PDL side, and that surely makes him ideally qualified to turn pro with the Red Bulls. ~ Austin Fido, Once a Metro

17. Vancouver Whitecaps – Mo Adams, M (Syracuse): I admittedly made this pick forgetting that Mo Adams was an international player, but despite that fact, he would still represent a tremendous value for the ‘Caps. Carl Robinson has never met a defensive midfielder he doesn’t like and Adams is the most talented one in this draft. ~ Andrew Bahl, Eighty Six Forever

18. Sporting KC - Christopher Lema, M (Georgetown): Sporting KC is starting to become thin in the midfielder department. Lema, who can slot into a box-to-box or defensive midfielder role, would bolster the depth in that area. ~ The Blue Testament

19. New York City FC – Alan Winn, F/W (UNC): With NYCFC adding a few defenders in the offseason already, we went into the mock draft with a focus on the offensive side. Winn should be able to provide some much-needed depth and versatility as a forward or winger for Patrick Vieira, potentially opening up an offense that fell flat toward the end of last season. ~ Ben Schleider, Hudson River Blue

20. Houston Dynamo – Ben Lundgaard, GK (VA Tech): The Dynamo currently only have one goalkeeper on their roster and while a rookie goalkeeper would likely spend a lot of time down with the Dynamo’s USL team, it would help fill up a pretty empty position for the team. ~ Alicia Tolar, Dynamo Theory

21. Columbus Crew SC – Jon Gallagher, F (Notre Dame): Gregg Berhalter likes players who can complete a dribble, and Gallagher is the best combination of skill and talent at this spot in the draft.

22. Seattle Sounders – Alex Roldan, M (Seattle): With the Seattle Sounders drafting low and pushing for a third straight appearance in MLS Cup, their draft will be focused on the distant future. In this case they get someone who has already practiced with them and who is comfortable in the area. He probably plays for the Sounders’ USL team down in Tacoma. ~ Dave Clark, Sounder at Heart

23. Toronto FC – Oliver Shannon, M (Clemson): This Clemson midfielder is a defensive stalwart with a penchant for toughness. He could have a future as an apprentice to Michael Bradley. ~ Charlie Clarke, Waking the Red
