Hey, I’m a follower of your art and also currently live in Okinawa which is where the Ryukyu kingdoms were located. There’s a lot of unique culture to Okinawa that is distinct (not Chinese and not Japanese). I fell in love with this island and I would love to share it with you. Some topics that are great to start with:

- geography: The Ryukyu islands are an island chain in the pacific, covered in mountains and jungles, surrounded by beautiful turquoise water and colorful reefs.

- history: The Ryukyu kingdoms had a “golden age of trading” in the 1400’s which resulted in a Chinese influence. A common thing you’ll see everywhere is Shisa guardian statues. They come in a pair, the male has his mouth open to ward off evil spirits and the female has her mouth closed to keep in good spirits. They are found establishments and homes (including Starbucks lol) at the entryway and even on roofs! You will also see lots of paper lanterns.

- products: Okinawa has a lot of fishing, agriculture, and artistry. My favorites include cane sugar (brown sugar syrup is used as a sweetener), ta-am (a root vegetable similar to taro), benimo (purple sweet potato), goya (bitter melon), shikwasa (citrus fruit), pineapple, and the village where I live grows the entire island supply of strawberries in the spring!

There’s also local artisans who still make beautiful textiles by hand with bright floral patterns, hand made and painted pottery, and pretty blown glass (both dish-ware and sculptures).

- activities: Traditional sports include Haarii (dragon boat racing - this is a big deal and teams are very competitive across the island), Karate (styles known as Shito-Ryu and Goju-Ryu originated here), Eisa dancing (large festivals held every year featuring traditional drums and stringed instruments), and a tug-of-war that takes place annually uses a 6 ft thick rope that you can cut off a piece to take home for good luck!

I read somewhere about that Koholint island is somewhat inspired by the Ryukyu islands. I don’t know much about them, but I’m determined to learn more about the geography, culture and people who live there, and I am especially interested in implementing it into my Marin redesigns/Links Awakening art.

If anyone has anything to share, perhaps some helpful links or even better, personal experience, feel free to contact me! I love these kinds of stuff.
